But news that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. was preparing its&nbsp;biggest price hike in a decade&nbsp;still came as a shock to some, bringing home just how entrenched chip price inflation has become.</p>\n<p>TSMC controls over half the global foundry market, making chips for the likes of Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm. Known for its cutting-edge tech and high quality, the Taiwanese company normally commands production fees around 20% higher than its rivals, according to industry insiders.</p>\n<p>Since the end of last year, however, smaller foundries have repeatedly ramped up their own prices, so that United Microelectronics, the world's No. 3 player, now charges more than its bigger compatriot for some services, four industry executives told Nikkei Asia.</p>\n<p>These higher prices stem from a range of factors, including higher material and logistics costs as well as the race by device makers to secure adequate chip supplies, that have emerged since the chip shortage first began to bite late last year.</p>\n<p>TSMC has been slower than most other chip companies in raising its prices, in part because it already enjoyed such a hefty premium. But with investment costs also rising -- the company has pledged $100 billion in spending over the next three years -- the chip giant felt compelled to&nbsp;pass on some of the burden, sources briefed on the matter said.</p>\n<p>More urgently, industry sources say, the company is keen to weed out so-called double-booking, in which clients place orders for more chips than they actually need in hopes of securing production line space and support from contract chipmakers amid the global supply crunch. This, in turn, has made it difficult for TSMC to grasp the \"real demand\" picture, sources briefed on the matter told Nikkei.</p>\n<p>Client reactions to the planned price rise are mixed.</p>\n<p>\"We are glad that TSMC eventually adjusted prices so that it could fend off the practice of double-booking, when industry players race to secure enough chip production capacity during a shortage,\" K.S. Pua, chairman and CEO of Phison Electronics, told Nikkei. The leading NAND flash controller chip and solution provider is a client of both TSMC and UMC.</p>\n<p>\"We are still short of supplies and want more chip capacity to support our growth for the second half of 2021,\" Pua said.</p>\n<p>Phison raised its own chip prices around April this year to reflect the rising supply chain costs, and Pua said his company will have discussions with clients about further increases.</p>\n<p>Others, however, have expressed concern over whether they will be able to pass on these higher costs to customers.</p>\n<p>\"We are all in a great shock and all of our account managers need to speak to our customers to see if we can renegotiate some of the contracts,\" a chip executive told Nikkei. \"We haven't seen TSMC introduce such a broad rate increase in over a decade.\"</p>\n<p>The impact of TSMC's price will be felt more obviously from next year, analysts say, as the company is still working through existing orders. Customers will also negotiate their own specific terms with TSMC before Oct. 1, when the price hikes officially take effect, they said.</p>\n<p>Overall chip prices, however, have already surged.</p>\n<p>According to Dale Gai, research director of Counterpoint Research, chip developers are paying 40% higher production fees for legacy chips that are in the shortest supply.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/201b6c1300dd3cb3b2a783df4cf2a849\" tg-width=\"770\" tg-height=\"788\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Electronics makers, meanwhile, face even steeper increases as they try to source enough chips to complete their devices. The price of some microcontroller chips, for example, has jumped from $0.20 each to more than $1, supply chain executives and distributors told Nikkei -- a 400% increase in less than a year.</p>\n<p>The reason is that these chips, while not necessarily the most important part of a smartphone or server, are still essential and not easily replaced. Such chips can also be stockpiled more easily than, say, CPUs, which quickly become obsolete, so anyone who has extra inventory can name their price if they find a buyer in need.</p>\n<p>Prices have risen in just about every step of the chip supply chain, from basic materials to chip packing and testing services -- the last step before chips are mounted on printed circuit boards.</p>\n<p>For top chip developers that outsource production -- namely Qualcomm, Nvidia, MediaTek and Advanced Micro Devices -- this translated to an increase in \"cost of sales\" in 2020, according to a Nikkei analysis. Defined as the total cost of production, materials and delivery of goods, cost of sales continued to surge in the first half of 2021.</p>\n<p>Mobile chip giant Qualcomm's accumulated cost of sales from last October until June this year jumped nearly 60% on the year, while that of MediaTek, its key Asia rival, increased more than 64% for the same period. Both Qualcomm and MediaTek's revenue surged even more during the period, however, indicating they have adjusted the selling prices of their chips, which are used by the world's major smartphone makers.</p>\n<p>Industry players and analysts predict strong chip demand -- and thus higher prices -- to continue into next year.</p>\n<p>Doris Hsu, chair and CEO of Globalwafers, the world's third-largest wafer material maker, said the price of wafers -- the essential substrate that all chips are fabricated on -- is set to go up.</p>\n<p>\"Materials and chemicals used in production and transportation logistics costs are all on the rise,\" Hsu said. \"That means we have to adjust the selling price of our wafers, otherwise our profit margin could be affected.\"</p>\n<p>Peter Hanbury, a partner specializing in chip and tech supply chain at Bain &amp; Co., told Nikkei chip prices will likely rise into next year due to the time it takes to expand production capacity.</p>\n<p>Chip developers such as Qualcomm, NXP and Nvidia, he added, will likely negotiate to pass these price increases onto their own customers -- namely device makers and electronics builders such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, HP, Dell and Ford.</p>\n<p>\"[For] products like smartphones and PCs, the price increases will be more noticeable, while for other devices with limited semiconductor content you may not even notice,\" Hanbury said, referring to the retail prices.</p>\n<p>Gai, of Counterpoint Research, said the rising cost of chips may even impact smartphone makers' business strategies.</p>\n<p>\"The net profit margin for smartphone makers excluding Apple is only about 5% to 10%. In that case, the rising chip costs will definitely push all the industry players to roll out higher-end handset models for next year to offset the cost impacts rather than focus on midrange or lower-end phones,\" he said.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the race to develop cutting-edge technologies is also expected to keep chip prices high for the long term, particularly the more advanced offerings.</p>\n<p>\"Advanced chip production, such as 7-nanometer, 5-nanometer and future 3-nanometer, is extremely expensive,\" Mark Li, a veteran semiconductor analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein, told Nikkei. \"Only TSMC, Samsung and Intel could afford the investment. I am not going to say those advanced chip prices will never fall, but it's not easy for them to go down much given the scale of the investment,\" Li said.</p>\n<p>For smaller players and for more mature production technology, Li said the market \"could be more volatile once there is an economic slowdown. The correction could be quite substantial and quick, too.\"</p>\n<p>Li said the most important factor in determining prices, however, is the same as always: demand.</p>\n<p>\"Chip plants operate like airlines. Airlines must shoulder fixed costs even if there are only one or two passengers on board. Chipmaking plants are the same. If the demand slows, they have to lower prices to lure more clients and maintain utilization rates.\"</p>\n<p>TSMC told Nikkei that it will not comment on pricing adjustment but referred to CEO C.C. Wei's statement during an earnings briefing in July, when he said, \"TSMC's pricing strategy is strategic, not opportunistic. At the same time, we face manufacturing cost challenges due to increasing process complexity at leading node, new investment in mature nodes, expansion of our global manufacturing footprint and rising materials and basic commodities cost. The U.S. even issued gas ration coupons in 1974.\nThe spike was good news for Chevron and Exxon Mobil, which returned roughly 100% and 70%, respectively, in the 1970s, but painful for everyone else, as inflation raged. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 17% and 5%, respectively, over the decade.\nIf oil was the necessary component for the 1970s economy, chips provide the same function in the 2020s. They power everything from our computers and phones to our cars and appliances. And, as everyone knows by now, there is a shortage, with delivery times growing to more than 20 weeks, per Susquehanna Financial Group data.\nRoughly 80% of all the chips in the world are made in Northeast Asia. Politicians realize how big a problem this is, and they have started to demand local manufacturing, with President Joe Biden introducing a plan for $50 billion in chip research earlier this year. Reshoring any industry, including semiconductors, is a yearslong process that requires billions in capital. There will be winners and losers. And if it goes on too long, it will filter into the prices of all kinds of goods.\n“Shortages related to rapid upswings in demand could become inflationary,” TS Lombard’s Rory Green and Steven Blitz wrote back in January, when the scarcity of chips—”a product more known for steadily declining prices”—was in its infancy.\nThe global semiconductor shortage has been a particular thorn in the side of the automotive industry all year. It was supposed to resolve itself by the second half of 2021. But more production cuts announced by Toyota this past week shows the problem isn’t going away soon. In fact, RBC analyst Joseph Spak argues the shortage could last for years.\nPart of the problem is structural, Spak says. Electric vehicles need more computing power, but the auto industry typically relies on older-generation chip technology, where capacity isn’t being as readily added by chip makers. Instead, they prefer to focus on newer, higher-end chips for the consumer electronics industry.\nThe result: Instead of lines at the gas stations, there are lines at the automotive dealerships. Low new- and used-car inventories have pushed up pricing and contributed to rising inflation. Used-car prices rose about 20% in the first half of 2021, while new-car prices rose about 3%. The rise in used-car prices has started to slow, but new-car price gains are accelerating, rising about 7% year over year in July.\nThat’s not good for consumers, but auto makers stand to benefit. Constrained production will lead to persistently low inventories and higher pricing. Companies will sell fewer cars, but that’s been offset by higher prices. Ford and General Motors shares are up 43% and 17%, respectively, in 2021, and both still trade for about seven times 2022 earnings.\nAnd that’s just the auto industry. The longer the chip shortage goes on, the more prices will rise in all types of products. That will benefit chip makers such as Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Wall Street sees upside in the latter. Some two-thirds of analysts covering the stock rate it Buy, and the average price target implies about a 33% upside.\nDon’t expect long lines outside RadioShack, but expect the chip shortage to be It was supposed to resolve itself by the second half of 2021. This year, however, the 90-year-old Buffett is taking the meeting to Los Angeles so he can be by 97-year-old Berkshire Vice Chairman Charlie Munger’s side once again. Munger resides in Los Angeles and missed the last annual meeting due to travel restrictions. It will be the first time that the annual meeting will take place outside of Omaha, Nebraska.While “Woodstock for Capitalists” will be missing the capitalists once again, the tone of the meeting may more likely resemble the meetings of old with shareholders clamoring for Buffett’s outlook on the world following an unprecedented year and the Oracle more likely to oblige after holding back last year with the country just starting its fight through the deadly and uncertain pandemic.“I hope there would be a pretty sharp contrast in the overall demeanor of the folks at Berkshire,” said Cathy Seifert, a Berkshire analyst at CFRA Research. “Last year, there was a degree of an alarm just because this was an event that was very difficult to price. It was kind of written all over his face. And I don’t know how it’s changed and I hope it corrects itself in a reasonably prompt way,” Buffett said at the time. “I don’t know if Americans have now changed their habits or will change their habits because of the extended period.”The sale conveyed a pessimistic view on the industry from the legendary buy-and-hold investor. Many Buffett watchers were left disappointed, however, as shares of those carriers soon embarked on an epic rebound, rallying triple digits from 2020 lows. Even president Donald Trump weighed in on the trade back then, saying that Buffett has been right “his whole life,” butmade a mistake selling airlines.“He might acknowledge that the velocity of this recovery was greater than anticipated,” said Seifert. “The airline disposal may have been a function of their belief that what’s going on in the airline industry may be secular and not cyclical. That’s the one fine distinction that investors may want him to make.”While airline stocks have rebounded drastically over the past year, many argue that the industry may have indeed changed fundamentally due to the economic fallout and the road to a full recovery remains bumpy.United Airlines said this month thatbusiness and international travel recovery is still far off even as the economy continues to reopen.“He may still be right about the airline industry with travel coming back slowly and there being too many planes,” said James Shanahan, a Berkshire analyst at Edward Jones. “Arguably he could still be right about that, but he’s certainly wrong on the stocks.”New stock movesBerkshire bought back arecord of $24.7 billion in its own shares last year, while Buffett also did some bargain-hunting amid the market comeback with sizable positions in big dividend payers ChevronandVerizon.Applewas still the conglomerate’s biggest common stock investment as of the end of 2020. Buffett’s conglomerate also appeared to dial back its exposure to financials. Berkshire exited itsJPMorganandPNC positionat the end of last year, while cutting theWells Fargostake was cut by nearly 60%.“When you think about the legacy of Berkshire Hathaway and all the operating businesses, including railroads, manufacturing, retail, utilities, it’s all old economy type companies,” Shanahan said. “The way the portfolio is comprised now after the selling of airline stocks and selling of the financial stocks, together with huge performance in Apple, it looks a lot more new economy now.”Shanahan estimated that Berkshire bought back another $5 billion of its own shares in the first quarter according to proxy filings.‘Elephant-sized’ deal?The conglomerate was still sitting on a huge cash war chest with more than $138 billion at the end of 2020. Buffett has yet to make the “elephant-sized acquisition” he’s been touting for years. At last year’s meeting, the legendary investor gave a simple reason for his inaction.“We have not done anything because we haven’t seen anything that attractive,” Buffett said. “We are not doing anything big, obviously. We are willing to do something very big. I mean you could come to me on Monday morning with something that involved $30, or $40 billion or $50 billion. And if we really like what we are seeing, we would do it.”The deal-making environment has only become all the more competitive over the past year with the meteoric rise of SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies. More than 500 blank-check deals with over $138 billion funds are seeking their target companies currently, according to SPAC Research.“This is a significant company with a significant cash position. Investors have the right to know what they intend to deploy the cash,” Seifert said. “They are entitled to have more than just an excuse. Investors are going to start to grow a bit weary if it’s just the same old story. But the stock has recovered nicely, so they are not going to be grumbling too much.”SuccessionWhen it comes to a concrete succession plan, shareholders might not get much more from Buffett and Munger even though they are now both nonagenarians.Abel, vice chairman of noninsurance operations at Berkshire, is seen as a top contender as Buffett’s successor.“I do not expect him to talk about succession in any more detail than he already had,” Shanahan said. “Elevating the status of Abel and Jain to the roles of vice chairmen and having them available and participating in annual meeting speaks volume. You can see below that wind and solar energy are by far the fastest-growing sources of energy in the U.S. since 2000, and the same trends hold worldwide.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9549613b99e9488d2547777d87da6a9c\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\"><span>U.S. SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION DATA BY YCHARTS</span></p>\n<p>Despite all of this growth, wind energy only accounts for about 8.4% of all electricity consumed in the U.S. and solar energy is 3% of the electricity supply, so there's a lot of growth potential ahead. And there's one big reason wind, solar, and other renewable energy assets will keep growing.</p>\n<p><b>Renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels</b></p>\n<p>Maybe the biggest reason to believe in renewable energy is the trajectory in which costs are heading. As it becomes more expensive to build nuclear power plants, oil becomes more difficult to find, and coal becomes less competitive by the day, renewable energy costs are plummeting.</p>\n<p>Below is the unsubsidized cost of wind, utility-scale solar, natural gas, nuclear, and coal power plants according to Lazard's<i>Levelized Cost of Energy Analysis</i>, which it publishes every year. You can see that between 2010 and 2020, the cost of wind and solar have plummeted and the only fossil fuel that's gone down in cost is natural gas.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fbd9fa8d7008b80ce267f802e3ee6e3c\" tg-width=\"1153\" tg-height=\"406\"><span>DATA SOURCE: LAZARD LEVELIZED COST OF ENERGY ANALYSIS VERSIONS 4.0 AND 14.0.</span></p>\n<p>What's more impressive is that the cost of wind and solar energy now beats fossil fuels in most locations. This is no longer an industry that's driven by subsidies or environmentalists -- it's cost-effective and winning cost-competitive bids long-term. The next step it needs to really take over the energy industry is making energy storage a viable business.</p>\n<p><b>Innovation leads the way</b></p>\n<p>What gives me the most confidence about renewable energy long-term is the fact that innovation continues to drive the industry. Innovation helps lower cost, build better business models, and drive new technologies. Here are a few innovations I'm excited about on the horizon.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Solar plus storage:</b>Battery storage is becoming increasingly viable for homeowners, commercial buildings, and utilities.<b>SunPower</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:SPWR)&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Sunrun</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:RUN)&nbsp;are growing their energy storage businesses for homes by enabling lower utility bills along with backup power. And long-term they may play a role in making homes and EV charging smarter.</li>\n <li><b>Hydrogen fuel cells:</b>The big opportunity for renewable energy is when long-term energy storage is viable. This would enable cheap solar power plants to manufacture hydrogen via electrolysis to transport energy, which would fundamentally change how we use electricity.<b>Bloom Energy</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:BE)&nbsp;is a leader in this space, building large fuel cells to turn hydrogen into electricity, but it's also launching an electrolyzer to turn cheap renewable electricity combined with water into hydrogen fuel. As this technology becomes more cost-effective, it could replace fossil fuels altogether.</li>\n <li><b>Electric vehicles:</b>Not only are electric vehicles helping replace fossil fuel vehicles, they could eventually be a great energy storage location in the home. Imagine using your charged car to power your home during an electricity outage or store electricity from your rooftop solar for use at night.</li>\n <li><b>Smart homes:</b>Another area of innovation today is making our demand sources smarter. Homes can heat and cool at more efficient times, use less energy during peak hours, and pull supply when wind and solar production are high. Companies like SunPower and Sunrun are building the tools to make homes smarter and use renewable energy more efficiently, and that will likely continue over the next decade.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>As with any innovation or new product, we don't know what's going to win and different companies are taking different strategies to market, so there are still lots of risks for investors. But one way or another, I think innovation will drive the renewable energy industry forward.</p>\n<p><b>How to invest in renewable energy stocks</b></p>\n<p>If you're diving into renewable energy, I've mentioned three stocks that should do well as the companies grow. I like SunPower in residential and commercial solar and storage and Bloom Energy in hydrogen fuel cells.</p>\n<p>If you're more risk-averse and are looking for dividends,<b>Brookfield Renewable Partners</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:BEP)&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:HASI)&nbsp;are&nbsp;spending billions&nbsp;to build and buy renewable energy and energy storage projects around the world. They'll generate cash flow from these projects, which drive dividends that yield 3.2% and 3% respectively. You can see below that wind and solar energy are by far the fastest-growing sources of energy in the U.S. since 2000, and the same trends hold worldwide.\nU.S. SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION DATA BY YCHARTS\nDespite all of this growth, wind energy only accounts for about 8.4% of all electricity consumed in the U.S. and solar energy is 3% of the electricity supply, so there's a lot of growth potential ahead. And there's one big reason wind, solar, and other renewable energy assets will keep growing.\nRenewables are cheaper than fossil fuels\nMaybe the biggest reason to believe in renewable energy is the trajectory in which costs are heading. As it becomes more expensive to build nuclear power plants, oil becomes more difficult to find, and coal becomes less competitive by the day, renewable energy costs are plummeting.\nBelow is the unsubsidized cost of wind, utility-scale solar, natural gas, nuclear, and coal power plants according to Lazard'sLevelized Cost of Energy Analysis, which it publishes every year. The next step it needs to really take over the energy industry is making energy storage a viable business.\nInnovation leads the way\nWhat gives me the most confidence about renewable energy long-term is the fact that innovation continues to drive the industry. Innovation helps lower cost, build better business models, and drive new technologies. Here are a few innovations I'm excited about on the horizon.\n\nSolar plus storage:Battery storage is becoming increasingly viable for homeowners, commercial buildings, and utilities.SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR) and Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) are growing their energy storage businesses for homes by enabling lower utility bills along with backup power. And long-term they may play a role in making homes and EV charging smarter.\nHydrogen fuel cells:The big opportunity for renewable energy is when long-term energy storage is viable. This would enable cheap solar power plants to manufacture hydrogen via electrolysis to transport energy, which would fundamentally change how we use electricity.Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) is a leader in this space, building large fuel cells to turn hydrogen into electricity, but it's also launching an electrolyzer to turn cheap renewable electricity combined with water into hydrogen fuel. As this technology becomes more cost-effective, it could replace fossil fuels altogether.\nElectric vehicles:Not only are electric vehicles helping replace fossil fuel vehicles, they could eventually be a great energy storage location in the home. Imagine using your charged car to power your home during an electricity outage or store electricity from your rooftop solar for use at night.\nSmart homes:Another area of innovation today is making our demand sources smarter. Homes can heat and cool at more efficient times, use less energy during peak hours, and pull supply when wind and solar production are high. Companies like SunPower and Sunrun are building the tools to make homes smarter and use renewable energy more efficiently, and that will likely continue over the next decade.\n\nAs with any innovation or new product, we don't know what's going to win and different companies are taking different strategies to market, so there are still lots of risks for investors. But one way or another, I think innovation will drive the renewable energy industry forward.\nHow to invest in renewable energy stocks\nIf you're diving into renewable energy, I've mentioned three stocks that should do well as the companies grow. Revenue was up 28% in the latest fiscal year, ahead of the 24% growth rate seen in the prior period.</p>\n<p>The company classifies 94% of its revenue as subscription-based. Squarespace added about 700,000 new unique subscriptions in 2020 and the company disclosed that more than two thirds of total subscriptions are annual.</p>\n<p>About 70% of Squarespace’s revenue last year came from the U.S., while the rest was international.</p>\n<p>Squarespace was profitable last year, recording about $30.6 million in net income, though profits were down from $58.2 million in 2019. The company’s “fundamentals highlight a rare combo of profitability and growth at scale,” wrote MKM Partners analyst Rohit Kulkarni.</p>\n<p>Despite a string of profitability on an annual basis, Squarespace generated a net loss of $10.1 million in the first quarter of 2021 compared with a loss of $1.1 million a year earlier. The company posted profits in each of the last three quarters of 2020.</p>\n<p><b>Competition Aplenty</b></p>\n<p>The company competes with a variety of different players across the e-commerce industry, according to its filing. Squarespace counts web-creation platforms like&nbsp;Wix.com&nbsp;(ticker: WIX) and Square’s (SQ) Weebly among its competition, along with e-commerce powerhouse&nbsp;Shopify&nbsp;(ticker: SHOP),&nbsp;which lets businesses set up online shops.</p>\n<p>Squarespace also calls out competitors like GoDaddy (GDDY) that offer domain-name tools, as well as those providing email-marketing and scheduling functions, while arguing that its own “comprehensive, all-in-one platform, multichannel commerce capabilities” are an asset.</p>\n<p>Jefferies analyst Brent Thill notes that Wix is larger than Squarespace, with revenue of $989 million last year versus $621 million for Squarespace. In addition, Squarespace’s revenue last year was similar to what Wix posted in 2018, but Wix was posting faster growth at that scale, and without the benefit of the pandemic-driven acceleration in e-commerce more broadly, he wrote.</p>\n<p><b>On the Menu</b></p>\n<p>SquareSpace recently closed its $415 million acquisition of Tock, a company focused on the restaurant and hospitality industries. Tock’s services allow businesses to manage reservations, takeout, event ticketing and more.</p>\n<p>This part of the business may position SquareSpace against more tech giants, suggested MKM’s Kulkarni.</p>\n<p>“SquareSpace’s offering with Tock faces competition from delivery services such as Uber Eats (UBER),DoorDash&nbsp;(DASH) and&nbsp;Grubhub&nbsp;(GRUB),&nbsp;along with other restaurant [customer-relationship management] services such as TouchBistro and Toast,” he wrote.</p>\n<p>At the same time, the acquisition is an example of one way Squarespace has “smartly diversified into selling not just physical goods online but also adding calendar/scheduling capabilities (restaurant or gym reservations), content sales, and subscriptions,” he continued.</p>\n<p><b>Marketing Bucks</b></p>\n<p>Squarespace’s marketing and sales costs are growing far faster than its revenue.
