The vehicle’sindustry-leading drivetrain technology, great design, and solid build quality earned it that title. Yet, Tesla (TSLA) remains the king of the EV. Of course, one car with limited volume isn’t going to change anything, though that’s not the way things are set to stay.I wrote on Lucid’s growth prospects some time ago, so that’s not the focus of today’s article. Instead, I’m here to discuss why Lucid Motors is well-positioned to surpass Tesla due to a rapidly eroding first-mover advantage. In an article on TeslaI published earlier this year, I discussed how the brand’s cache is already starting to slip. While we can sit here and debate that General Motors (GM) was actually the first EV manufacturer with its EV1 back in the ’90s, I think we all know that Tesla really earned that title. This article will discuss why that may not be such a good thing.
\n
The First-Mover Fallacy
\n
Oftentimes, the first-mover in a major new market is identified as said market’s future leader. It’s easy to see why, as they’re often associated with the market that they’ve created. Yet, think web browser and you probably think of Alphabet’s (GOOG) Google Chrome. Think of email, you’re again most likely going to think of a Google product -- this time Gmail. Social media? Facebook (FB). Cell phone? iPhone. You get the idea. What’s one thing all of these different products have in common? None of them were the first to market. Yet, despite this, they’ve all become the pinnacle of each of their respective markets.
\n
So, the big question is “Why?” Why are none of these transformative first-movers the leaders of their industry? Well, there’s not really one blanket answer.A 2005 publication to The Harvard Business Review discusses the idea of this fallacy.
\n
\n “But for every academic study proving that first-mover advantages exist, there is a study proving they do not. While some well-known first-movers, such as Gillette in safety razors and Sony in personal stereos, have enjoyed considerable success, others, such as Xerox in fax machines and eToys in Internet retailing, have failed. We have found that the differences in outcome are not random—that first-mover status can confer advantages, but it does not do so categorically. Much depends on the circumstances in which it is sought.”\n
\n
I find this last sentence to be particularly powerful, as every industry is vastly different and allows for alternate outcomes. There will always be some level of unpredictability, dumb luck if you will, though The Harvard Business Review identified two factors that seem to reliably indicate whether or not the first-mover advantage will last. “The pace at which the technology of the product in question is evolving and the pace at which the market for that product is expanding” are these two critical factors.
\n
The rate of innovation in the EV sector is currently one of the most impressive global efforts I’ve ever seen, as is the rate at which the market is expanding.Since 2015, global sales of EVs have grown at an average rate of 50%. Yet, this is heating up. Global EV sales in 2021are expected to rise 83% over last year, increasing the rate of adoption as more options flood the market. In order for first-movers to be successful, there needs to be substantial interest in the market. This plays into Tesla’s hands. However, the extreme level of growth in the market necessitates more competition. This opens the door for others to combat Tesla.
\n
Let’s come back to the idea of rapid innovation as well. Companies likeNano One(OTCPK:NNOMF) andSES(IVAN), both of which I’ve covered, are looking to introduce industry-shifting innovations. They’re not alone either. CATL, a Chinese battery producer, is on the verge of becoming the country’s second-largest company. CATL is on pace to spend nearly $1 billion on R&D this year, up 115% over the first half of last year. In this market of rapid innovation, it is nigh on impossible for any one company to stay at the forefront.
\n
The EV industry has failed what The Harvard Business review deemed the two most important litmus tests in determining whether a first-mover truly has any advantage. Not great news for the incumbent leader, Tesla. Though, I argue that there is more that can bring down the power of a first-mover. Complacency can create opportunities for others to thrive. In the next section, I will discuss how Tesla’s complacency, as well as a few other factors, mean that there are more reasons than a highly innovative and quickly-growing market for Tesla to fall.
\n
Where Tesla’s Faltering
\n
I think that there’s no question Lucid owes a majority of its early success to Tesla. Tesla essentially created the market for Lucid and, maybe even more importantly, got investors to pay attention to them. All of that attention allowed Lucid Motors to raise $4.4 billion in its SPAC merger with Churchill Capital. That money was enough for Lucid to bring the Air to market, continue development work on its SUV, and expand its production footprint. That’s something that Tesla never had and will be immensely powerful for Lucid Motors. Now, I’m not saying that Lucid has an easy road to mass production, far from it, but there’s no question that it’s easier than Tesla’s was. This is the first stage in which Lucid is benefiting from Tesla’s prior struggles.
\n
Though, a good start means nothing if the company can’t build on it. This is where I believe that Tesla is simply holding the door open for Lucid Motors. Tesla has seemingly become lazy and no longer has that fire to continue innovating. I can’t say I blame them, they’ve got several years on their closest competition and their cars are some of the best in the category. Well, perhaps before the Air came to market.
\n
The quality control issues that plagued Tesla in its early days were an issue, though forgivable given the company’s tumultuous path to production. Yet, there are still a number of reports concerning poor build quality. These issues are even present on the company’s $130,000 Model S Plaid. At this point, these issues are inexcusable. Especially on a $130,000 car. Lucid has worked hard to make sure it avoided making the same mistakes, even delaying initial production to do so, and it’s paid off. We’ll have to wait and see if a larger sample size produces the same result but, so far, the quality of the Air looks to be on par with its luxury price tag.
\n
The other major area that Tesla seems to be lacking in is powertrain development. Having just released a car that goes 0-60 in less than two seconds, this may seem like a bit of an unjustified claim. But that’s not the only way to measure the capability of a powertrain. In an older article, I reviewed the quality of Lucid’s core product offering. That article focused on its powertrain efficiency. The Air is capable of up to 520 miles of range, at an efficiency of 4.64 miles/kWh (the electric equivalent to miles/gallon). Granted, this is for the company’s Grand Touring trim, which costs a whopping $139,000. The base version of the Air, which costs $77,400, has an efficiency of 5.41 miles/kWh, traveling 406 miles on a single charge (using an estimated battery size of75 kWh). Tesla’s Long Range Model S, which travels412 miles on a single charge, is Tesla’s most efficient vehicle with an efficiency of 4.12 miles/kWh. I’m not going to get into the specifics on how this was achieved, as this was all explained in that previous article. For our purposes here, it’s just important to understand that it was done.
\n
Now, it’s easy to point to Tesla’s batteries and say that they’re the most advanced in the world. I wouldn’t argue with you there, though I’m not sure that’ll be the case for very long. It’s already becoming far less obvious than it once was, as improvements become increasingly more iterative and less significant. Essentially, Tesla’s stuck making small incremental changes while its competitors, which once were far behind, have had the chance to catch up. The company hopes that its new 4680 cells will give it the next big leap, but I think they’re moving in the wrong direction. Below is a visual representation, a top-down view of what a Tesla battery pack looks like.
\n
Source: Author’s Creation
\n
All of the red space you see is wasted space. Trying to fit a bunch of cylinders in a rectangular container is always going to be inefficient. Hence, from a volumetric density perspective, the prismatic cell architecture is superior. In vehicles, where space is a premium, volumetric density is a critical performance benchmark. Though, I think that this speaks to a larger issue in Tesla’s battery cell development. Ina previous article, I discussed how Tesla’s batteries are becoming a liability. The company’s unwillingness to consider lithium metal batteries as the next generation of lithium-ion batteries could see the company’s battery advantage completely erode by the end of the decade.
\n
Source:C&EN
\n
The fact that Lucid isn’t reliant upon their own battery technology means that it is far more nimble during this time of significant battery iteration. As noted in the above section, the EV industry is likely to be driven by a series of disruptive technologies through the foreseeable future, and a company that is easily able to consistently pivot to these disruptive technologies has a better chance of staying on top of the market. To give Tesla credit, its cells are some of the best on the market. However, it’s hard to stay at the top of two different fields, car design and battery design, and the desire to do so often results in failure. The fact that Lucid walloped Tesla in drivetrain efficiency speaks to the fact that Tesla is no longer engineering the best electric vehicles and all signs point to Tesla’s battery advantage dwindling.
\n
Investor Takeaway
\n
Look, I don’t think that Tesla, or Lucid Motors for that matter, should be valued close to where they are today but the fact of the matter is that they are. If Lucid will ultimately be the stronger of the two, take that as you will. I won’t pretend that I can predict the flow of the market with companies like Tesla and Lucid, which trade so far removed from any fundamentals, but I do think that time will prove that Lucid is the better of the two companies.
\n
Ignoring share prices, Lucid Motors is gearing up for some pretty extreme growth. The company has a lot of cash on hand and is using it to invest in growing its production and product offerings. Similar to Tesla, Lucid plans to introduce mass-market vehicles after its niche offerings begin generating capital and brand awareness. As the disclosure below notes, I own shares of Lucid Motors. This may seem strange, as I just said that their fundamentals don’t come close to justifying their valuation. Though, when shares were under $20, it was far more appealing. To be completely honest, at this stage, I’m just holding to see where it goes.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Lucid Motors Is Set Up To Surpass Tesla
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nLucid Motors Is Set Up To Surpass Tesla\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-23 16:35 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nFirst-movers are often assumed to carry a lasting advantage. For our purposes here, it’s just important to understand that it was done.\nNow, it’s easy to point to Tesla’s batteries and say that they’re the most advanced in the world. Below is a visual representation, a top-down view of what a Tesla battery pack looks like.\nSource: Author’s Creation\nAll of the red space you see is wasted space. The company’s unwillingness to consider lithium metal batteries as the next generation of lithium-ion batteries could see the company’s battery advantage completely erode by the end of the decade.\nSource:C&EN\nThe fact that Lucid isn’t reliant upon their own battery technology means that it is far more nimble during this time of significant battery iteration. The fact that Lucid walloped Tesla in drivetrain efficiency speaks to the fact that Tesla is no longer engineering the best electric vehicles and all signs point to Tesla’s battery advantage dwindling.\nInvestor Takeaway\nLook, I don’t think that Tesla, or Lucid Motors for that matter, should be valued close to where they are today but the fact of the matter is that they are. If Lucid will ultimately be the stronger of the two, take that as you will. I won’t pretend that I can predict the flow of the market with companies like Tesla and Lucid, which trade so far removed from any fundamentals, but I do think that time will prove that Lucid is the better of the two companies.\nIgnoring share prices, Lucid Motors is gearing up for some pretty extreme growth. To be completely honest, at this stage, I’m just holding to see where it goes.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":973,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":871159036,"gmtCreate":1637039911299,"gmtModify":1637039911430,"author":{"id":"3579862405941731","authorId":"3579862405941731","name":"telurbenedic","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f234fd01c2b897b872eb1140f0c7e1de","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579862405941731","authorIdStr":"3579862405941731"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$李斌卖股? 股价跌那么多","listText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$李斌卖股? 股价跌那么多","text":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$李斌卖股? 股价跌那么多","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/871159036","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1203,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":847712215,"gmtCreate":1636553987299,"gmtModify":1636553987696,"author":{"id":"3579862405941731","authorId":"3579862405941731","name":"telurbenedic","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f234fd01c2b897b872eb1140f0c7e1de","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579862405941731","authorIdStr":"3579862405941731"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"more like michael blurry ","listText":"more like michael blurry ","text":"more like michael blurry","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/847712215","repostId":"1180704879","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1180704879","pubTimestamp":1636546078,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1180704879?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-11-10 20:07","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Not World Hunger Or Tax Bill But This Is The Real Reason Why Elon Musk Wants To Sell Tesla Stock, As Per 'The Big Short' Fame's Michael Burry","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1180704879","media":"Benzinga","summary":"“The Big Short” investor Michael Burry has suggested that Tesla Inc. Corrections, which are sell-offs of at least 10% for the broader market, are not uncommon. In fact, one has happened in 29 of the past 50 years, and one usually occurs every 19 months on average. Buying high-quality businesses and owning them for the long term is a solid strategy for dealing with the certainty that there will be uncertainty.
\n
With that in mind, when the next market crash does happen, these three outstanding stocks would be good additions to help boost your investment portfolio.
\n
\n
1. Five Below
\n
With 1,121 stores in 39 states as of July 31, Five Below (NASDAQ:FIVE) is one of the biggest discount retailers in the U.S. Catering primarily to teens, tweens (ages 10 to 13), and their parents, the company offers a wide variety of items from apparel and electronics to beauty products and arts and crafts. This $11 billion enterprise saw its sales surge 55% and earnings per share (EPS) jump 125% in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2019.
\n
Five Below's stores are colorful and vibrant shopping destinations, averaging 9,000 square feet in size and over $2 million in annual sales volume. Each location costs $300,000 to build and generates $450,000 in four-wall earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in the first year, a return on investment of 150%. With these stellar unit economics, it's no wonder the leadership team has been aggressively opening up more stores, including 101 net new locations just in the first two quarters of this fiscal year.
\n
Management believes that the company can one day have 2,500 stores in the U.S., which would be more than double the current footprint. This strategy has worked extremely well up to this point, and the stock price has followed, up more than seven-fold over the past decade. Expect Five Below to continue executing on its expansion plan in the years ahead.
\n
2. Home Depot
\n
Home Depot (NYSE:HD), the largest home-improvement retailer by sales, has proven that its business model can thrive no matter what economic situation we're in. Revenue growth exceeded 23% in four straight quarters before reaching a record $41.1 billion in Q2 2021. During the pandemic, people spent more time than ever before inside, and this led to a surge in spending on home improvements.
\n
Home Depot prides itself on providing a seamless omnichannel shopping experience, utilizing its nearly 2,300 locations as hubs to get the right supplies, tools, and equipment to customers when they need them. In the most recent quarter, 55% of online orders were fulfilled at a store. What's more, management has plans to offer same- and next-day delivery to 90% of the U.S. population sometime in 2022. Customers' urgency of need, coupled with the fact that Home Depot sells big and bulky products, is why e-commerce juggernaut Amazon hasn't been a concern in the home-improvement retail space.
\n
Looking ahead, the company will continue to focus on bolstering its position with professional (or Pro) customers, contractors who help people tackle larger and more complex renovation projects. Representing 45% of total sales, this group spends much more than the average do-it-yourself (DIY) customer. As a result, Home Depot's return on invested capital of 44.7% and sales per square foot of $663 are both outstanding.
\n
Investors have the opportunity to scoop up Home Depot shares today at a cheaper price-to-earnings ratio (26) than the S&P 500's (29).
\n
3. Netflix
\n
As the leading streaming company, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is a stock you should consider loading up on if there's a market crash. The business has consistently increased sales by more than 20% for eight straight years. And for 2021, management is forecasting just under $30 billion in revenue and a 20% operating margin. Even more exciting is that Netflix is projected to start generating positive free cash flow starting next year, something shareholders have long been waiting for.
\n
The company's first-mover advantage is why it now has more than 213 million subscribers worldwide and can spend $17 billion in cash on content this year alone. Even with the bevy of streaming options consumers have at their fingertips today, Netflix still shines thanks to its award-winning and popular hit shows and movies. And adding mobile gaming to the subscription offering should help to attract more customers as well as drive higher levels of engagement over time.
\n
During the most recent quarter, 98% of new members came from outside the U.S. and Canada, as these mature markets become more and more saturated. Therefore, expect international growth to propel Netflix in the years ahead. \nWith that in mind, when the next market crash does happen, these three outstanding stocks would be good additions to help boost your investment portfolio. \nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Five Below\nWith 1,121 stores in 39 states as of July 31, Five Below (NASDAQ:FIVE) is one of the biggest discount retailers in the U.S. \nFive Below's stores are colorful and vibrant shopping destinations, averaging 9,000 square feet in size and over $2 million in annual sales volume. \nManagement believes that the company can one day have 2,500 stores in the U.S., which would be more than double the current footprint. This strategy has worked extremely well up to this point, and the stock price has followed, up more than seven-fold over the past decade. Expect Five Below to continue executing on its expansion plan in the years ahead. \n2. Home Depot\nHome Depot (NYSE:HD), the largest home-improvement retailer by sales, has proven that its business model can thrive no matter what economic situation we're in. Revenue growth exceeded 23% in four straight quarters before reaching a record $41.1 billion in Q2 2021. During the pandemic, people spent more time than ever before inside, and this led to a surge in spending on home improvements. \nHome Depot prides itself on providing a seamless omnichannel shopping experience, utilizing its nearly 2,300 locations as hubs to get the right supplies, tools, and equipment to customers when they need them. \nLooking ahead, the company will continue to focus on bolstering its position with professional (or Pro) customers, contractors who help people tackle larger and more complex renovation projects. Representing 45% of total sales, this group spends much more than the average do-it-yourself (DIY) customer. As a result, Home Depot's return on invested capital of 44.7% and sales per square foot of $663 are both outstanding. \nInvestors have the opportunity to scoop up Home Depot shares today at a cheaper price-to-earnings ratio (26) than the S&P 500's (29). \n3. Netflix\nAs the leading streaming company, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is a stock you should consider loading up on if there's a market crash. \nThe company's first-mover advantage is why it now has more than 213 million subscribers worldwide and can spend $17 billion in cash on content this year alone. Even with the bevy of streaming options consumers have at their fingertips today, Netflix still shines thanks to its award-winning and popular hit shows and movies. And adding mobile gaming to the subscription offering should help to attract more customers as well as drive higher levels of engagement over time. \nDuring the most recent quarter, 98% of new members came from outside the U.S. and Canada, as these mature markets become more and more saturated. Therefore, expect international growth to propel Netflix in the years ahead. With local content production currently taking place in 45 countries and the proven successes of foreign series like Squid Game and La Casa de Papel, the business is fulfilling its ambition of becoming a global media empire. The world is on its way to being dominated by streaming entertainment, and Netflix remains at the forefront of this shift. \nHave your watchlist ready\nInvestors can't predict when the next market crash will happen, but they can prepare by having a watch list of companies ready to be purchased should the opportunity present itself. Images
\n
All eyes will be on electric vehicle maker Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)as the company reports its third quarter results after the bell on Wednesday, October 20th. Recently, the company announced record production and deliveries for the quarter that smashed analyst expectations. However, street estimates for Q3 haven't risen as much as one might expect, which could lead to another blowout earnings report this week.
\n
For the period, preliminary deliveries of 241,300 beat street estimates by nearly 20,000 units. In Q2 of this year, the average revenue per vehicle delivered (including regulatory credit sales) was just under $50,700. If you basically round off, the math tells you that a beat of that size should equal about an extra billion dollars in revenue. Going into the report, the street was exactly at $13 billion for its Q3 average, but take a look at where we are now.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha analyst estimates page
\n
Despite the large deliveries beat, the street average hasn't even risen by $650 million, so the consensus seems to be a bit low right now. Additionally, the \"low\" estimate seems completely off base, as that would represent a decline over Q2's top line figure despite an extra roughly 40,000 deliveries. Don't forget, the sequential jump in Model S cash deliveries was around 6,000 units, which at an average selling price of $100,000 is an additional $600 million in revenue alone. Taking the low estimate out would increase the street average by $100 million. Unless there was some massive discounting going on or some prior period adjustment, any revenue estimates around or below $13 billion just don't seem logical.
\n
Model Y sales to Europe, more Model S sales (including the expensive Plaid), and a full quarter of price raises in the US should all be tailwinds. The standard range Y in China will provide somewhat of a headwind, along with a slightly stronger dollar in the quarter. However, Tesla may be able to potentially recognize hundreds of millions of dollars in deferred revenue related to its full self-driving feature as that program expanded a bit during the quarter. I also am projecting a $100 million sequential decline in credit sales.
\n
Perhaps the biggest question in the quarter will be margins. All of those price hikes, the mix of more Model Y and new Model S, and the ramp of production in China should be positives, potentially offsetting some or all supply chain or chip shortage inflation. In my base case, I'm assuming that total automotive gross margins increase by one percentage point, or a little more than half of the 190 basis points they jumped from Q1 to Q2. As I usually do, the table below shows a bear, base, and bull case, with dollar values in millions except per share amounts.
\n
I'm sure there will be critics who think I'm just trying to set a high bar so that Tesla cannot beat my base case. That is not true here, as on the revenue side I'm not even halfway between the street average and the high estimate on the street. On the bottom line, I'm not even calling for Tesla to beat by as much as it did in Q2 (47 cents). Also, using the average jump from Q2 to Q3 non-GAAP earnings per share over the past three years would put us a bit above $2 per share, and I'm still calling for a one handle there. For Tesla to miss estimates on the bottom line, gross margins would have to drop by about a percentage point sequentially. Even then, a little revenue upside or savings on the operating expense lines could still fuel a bottom line beat.
\n
The other major item investors will be watching for is an update on Tesla's production facilities. It appears that Shanghai 3/Y production is now greater than Fremont's, and the Berlin and Texas factories are still on track to open this year. The company needs these facilities to come online in the next few months if it wants to hit a 50% yearly growth rate for 2022, likely meaning over 1.3 million deliveries. Any Tesla-specific delays that linger meaningfully into the new year may also impact other new products (Semi, Cybertruck, new Roadster) that have already been delayed a bit, as well as allowing the competition to potentially steal some market share. In the past few days, Tesla removed the Cybertruck's specifications and prices from its website. This may have to do with surging commodity costs since that product was unveiled, and it likely means Tesla will raise prices when production finally starts.
\n
As for Tesla shares, they are currently in a very nice uptrend and have broken solidly above $800 after the Q3 delivery report. As the chart below shows, the 50-day moving average (pink line) has crossed back above its longer term counterpart (200-day in purple). The stock closed Friday less than $60 from its all-time high, so the only concern here might be that the earnings report could be the old \"buy the rumor, sell the news\" type of event.
\n
Source: Yahoo! Finance
\n
Tesla is set to report Q3 earnings this week, and it would not surprise me if we see the company beat again. Given the sharp sequential rise in deliveries, the street seems a bit low with some of its estimates, and any margin increases would likely mean a significant bottom line beat. Investors will be looking for updates on production capacities, not only to see if Berlin and Texas are close to being ready, but to start thinking about how far over one million deliveries Tesla could get next year. It certainly will be interesting to see the stock's reaction afterwards, as the recent rally may mean investors are pricing in another big beat.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Q3: Blowout Possible Again
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTesla Q3: Blowout Possible Again\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-10-19 13:58 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nQ3 street estimates seems rather low.\nMargin strength could lead to large beat.\nInvestors looking for comments on supply chain issues.\n\nAdrianHancu/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nAll eyes ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4460443-tesla-stock-blowout-q3-possible-again","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1198851965","content_text":"Summary\n\nQ3 street estimates seems rather low.\nMargin strength could lead to large beat.\nInvestors looking for comments on supply chain issues.\n\nAdrianHancu/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nAll eyes will be on electric vehicle maker Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)as the company reports its third quarter results after the bell on Wednesday, October 20th. Recently, the company announced record production and deliveries for the quarter that smashed analyst expectations. However, street estimates for Q3 haven't risen as much as one might expect, which could lead to another blowout earnings report this week.\nFor the period, preliminary deliveries of 241,300 beat street estimates by nearly 20,000 units. In Q2 of this year, the average revenue per vehicle delivered (including regulatory credit sales) was just under $50,700. If you basically round off, the math tells you that a beat of that size should equal about an extra billion dollars in revenue. Going into the report, the street was exactly at $13 billion for its Q3 average, but take a look at where we are now.\nSource: Seeking Alpha analyst estimates page\nDespite the large deliveries beat, the street average hasn't even risen by $650 million, so the consensus seems to be a bit low right now. Unless there was some massive discounting going on or some prior period adjustment, any revenue estimates around or below $13 billion just don't seem logical.\nModel Y sales to Europe, more Model S sales (including the expensive Plaid), and a full quarter of price raises in the US should all be tailwinds. The standard range Y in China will provide somewhat of a headwind, along with a slightly stronger dollar in the quarter. However, Tesla may be able to potentially recognize hundreds of millions of dollars in deferred revenue related to its full self-driving feature as that program expanded a bit during the quarter. I also am projecting a $100 million sequential decline in credit sales.\nPerhaps the biggest question in the quarter will be margins. As I usually do, the table below shows a bear, base, and bull case, with dollar values in millions except per share amounts.\nI'm sure there will be critics who think I'm just trying to set a high bar so that Tesla cannot beat my base case. Even then, a little revenue upside or savings on the operating expense lines could still fuel a bottom line beat.\nThe other major item investors will be watching for is an update on Tesla's production facilities. This may have to do with surging commodity costs since that product was unveiled, and it likely means Tesla will raise prices when production finally starts.\nAs for Tesla shares, they are currently in a very nice uptrend and have broken solidly above $800 after the Q3 delivery report. As the chart below shows, the 50-day moving average (pink line) has crossed back above its longer term counterpart (200-day in purple). The stock closed Friday less than $60 from its all-time high, so the only concern here might be that the earnings report could be the old \"buy the rumor, sell the news\" type of event.\nSource: Yahoo! Finance\nTesla is set to report Q3 earnings this week, and it would not surprise me if we see the company beat again. It certainly will be interesting to see the stock's reaction afterwards, as the recent rally may mean investors are pricing in another big beat.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":401,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":850720645,"gmtCreate":1634629827509,"gmtModify":1634629865029,"author":{"id":"3579862405941731","authorId":"3579862405941731","name":"telurbenedic","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f234fd01c2b897b872eb1140f0c7e1de","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579862405941731","authorIdStr":"3579862405941731"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$to those that dont trust Elon ,please go away. stop asking is it too late to buy?the company is still in fast growing stage and Tesla is still innovating. 1, 2021 to June 7, 2021.
\n
Due to the problems of the active cruise control system of the vehicles within the scope of this recall, it is easy for the driver to activate the active cruise function by mistake in the following situations: when the vehicle is in D gear, the driver tries to switch the gear by pushing the right control lever again; When the vehicle turns sharply, the driver touches and moves the right control lever by mistake, etc. After the active cruise control is mistakenly activated, if the cruise speed set by the vehicle is not the current speed, and the current speed is lower than the set speed, the vehicle will accelerate to the set speed, resulting in a sudden increase in vehicle speed, which will affect the driver's expectation and lead to misjudgment of vehicle handling. In extreme cases, it may lead to vehicle collision, and there are potential safety hazards.
\n
Tesla will upgrade the active cruise control software for the recalled vehicles free of charge through OTA technology, so users can complete the software upgrade without going to the store; For vehicles that cannot be recalled through OTA technology, Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will contact relevant users through Tesla service center to upgrade active cruise control software for vehicles free, so as to eliminate potential safety hazards.
\n
In response to the recall, Tesla said on June 26 that for the vehicles (Model 3 / Model Y) within the scope of this recall, due to the fact that the active cruise control function may be activated by the driver by mistake, there are potential safety hazards in extreme cases. The company unveiled its electric F-150 Lightning truck last month and also told investors that it now expects electric vehicles to account for 40% of global sales by 2030.
\n
And GM (GM) is up more than 40% as well. The Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac maker said this month that it's looking to spend a whopping $35 billion on EVs by 2025.
\n
It seems investors are a bit infatuated with these legacy Big 3 automakers as they look to rapidly expand their electric car offerings to catch up with Tesla.
\n
Tesla is still growing incredibly quickly. Analysts expect earnings per share to more than double this year and increase at an average rate of about 45% annually over the next few years.
\n
Yet Tesla is one of the most polarizing stocks on Wall Street.
\n
According to Refinitiv, 14 analysts have the stock rated a \"buy,\" 13 a \"hold\" and 10 a \"sell.\" Contrast that with GM, which has 20 buy ratings, two holds and no sells.
\n
Skeptics have many questions about Tesla and Musk
\n
The consensus target price for Tesla stock from analysts is $652, about 6% lower than its current price.
\n
Tesla critics have a pile of worries to point to. Concerns about Tesla's management bench sprung up after longtime executive Jerome Guillen abruptly left earlier this month — especially since CEO Elon Musk is also busy running SpaceX.
\n
And Musk's obsession with bitcoin and dogecoin, along with other extracurricular activities like hosting Saturday Night Live and constantly tweeting, might be a turnoff for some investors and analysts.
\n
Still, there is no denying that the company has plenty of ardent fans, and its vehicles have grabbed plenty of positive headlines this week alone.
\n
For example, Cars.com (CARS) announced earlier this week that Tesla's Model 3 was ranked first in its American-Made Index, which measures how much a vehicle contributes to the US economy based on factors such as domestic factory jobs, manufacturing plants and parts sourcing.
\n
The Model 3 edged out Ford's Mustang for the top spot, and Tesla's Model Y also ranked third on the list. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.
\n
Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.
\n
As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.
\n
This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.
\n
Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.
\n
Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”
\n
As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.
\n
What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.
\n
The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.
\n
This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.
\n
However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.
\n
Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential
\n
I’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio back in February.
\n
The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.
\n
The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.
\n
Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.
\n
With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.
\n
That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.
\n
Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”
\n
Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.\nInstead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.\nAs a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.\nThis “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.\nBoth the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.\nClearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”\nAs someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.\nWhat Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.\nThe good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.\nThis is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.\nHowever, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.\nTaking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential\nI’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio back in February.\nThe company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.\nThe company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.\nNow, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.\nWith the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.\nThat means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.\nShares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”\nInterestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Strong demand in China even inspired a Citigroup analyst to upgrade NIO to a buy rating, as he expects demand to accelerate in the coming months.\nIn other words, NIO represents thecrème de la crèmeof EV stocks right now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":32,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192765603,"gmtCreate":1621231918502,"gmtModify":1631893490579,"author":{"id":"3579862405941731","authorId":"3579862405941731","name":"telurbenedic","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f234fd01c2b897b872eb1140f0c7e1de","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579862405941731","authorIdStr":"3579862405941731"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"since
