Anticipation of the fall launch of the company’s first 5G phones, surging demand for both Macs and iPads as the pandemic rolled on, and strength in both wearables and services fed off each other. The pieces all came together in the December quarter, when Apple (ticker: AAPL) posted&nbsp;its biggest quarter ever. Sales soared 21% to $111.4 billion, more than $8 billion over the Street consensus. Every product category—iPhone, iPad, Macs, wearables, and services—notched double-digit growth. Apple stock finished the year up 81%, adding nearly $1 trillion to its market cap.</p>\n<p>That’s a tough act to follow, particularly with the March quarter, which always slows from the holiday-boosted December quarter. But Apple could pull off the quintuple double again when its results come out after the bell Wednesday. The Street certainly thinks so, even if the market, which has pushed Apple shares up less than 2% in 2021, has been more cautious. Consensus estimates call for double-digit increases from last year across the board: iPhones sales up 43%, to $41.4 billion; iPad sales up 29%, to $5.6 billion; Mac sales of $6.8 billion, up 27%; wearables sales (mostly Apple Watch and AirPods) of $7.4 billion, up 18%; and a 16% bump in services, to $15.5 billion.</p>\n<p>Overall, the Street consensus expects sales of $77 billion, up 32% from a year ago, with profits of 98 cents a share. And most bullish Apple analysts seem to think their own estimates are too low—a print at $77 billion would likely trigger a selloff in the stock.</p>\n<p>Apple is also&nbsp;expected to provide an update on its capital-allocation strategy. A year ago,the company announced a 6% dividend increase, and boosted its stock repurchase plan by $50 billion. Apple has said repeatedly that it is pushing to get to a cash neutral position, but its remarkably big cash flow has slowed progress toward that goal.</p>\n<p>As always, the quarter is about more than just earnings.</p>\n<p>For one, the Street will be looking for signs that the sales surge for Macs and iPads is sustainable—and that the company is keeping up with demand despite widespread chip and display shortages. Some investors worry that the spike in PC demand could ebb as more people return to schools and offices. They’ll be looking for company guidance on that point.</p>\n<p>Another is the sustainability of the resurgence in iPhone growth. There were high hopes among bulls that the iPhone 12 would drive a “supercycle” with an accelerated replacement cycle. Several analysts have noted that a clear consumer preference for the high end of the iPhone 12 line is driving up average selling prices, which should support a strong revenue quarter for the segment.</p>\n<p>“Given the later-than-seasonal launch of new iPhones in the fall of 2020, we believe iPhone demand will experience more favorable year-over-year comparisons this March quarter compared to past years,” writes Monness Crespi Hardt’s Brian White, who sees 47% iPhone revenue growth during the quarter.</p>\n<p>And if Apple pulls it all together? Apple could crush Street estimates, writes Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, who has an Overweight rating and a $158 price target on the stock, up 17% from Monday’s close of $134.72. She sees the top line above $80 billion, with all segments growing at least 19% year over year. She is especially bullish on Mac and iPad sales, with estimates far above consensus—53% for Macs and 52% for iPads. On April 28, after the closing bell, the Cupertino company will release the results of its fiscal second quarter.</p>\n<p>Below is a summary of the Apple Maven’s last preview articles ahead of earnings. So far, we have covered the following key topics:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>April 28&nbsp;is the big day, so mark your calendars. The Apple Maven will review the Apple earnings report, conference call and Apple stock reaction via live blog, starting at 4 p.m. EST;</li>\n <li>Wall Street analysts expect to see outstanding&nbsp;numbers: revenues should climb 32% year-over-year, and earnings per share could reach as high as 53%;</li>\n <li>I believe that one of two product segments will shine brighter than the rest.The iPhone, for example, should benefit&nbsp;from a solid lineup and easy comps. Expect strong-double digit growth.</li>\n <li>The Mac is the other candidate for&nbsp;most successful segment in the quarter. Apple’s PC sales could rise by 50% or more, also over easy 2020 comps;</li>\n <li>Probably&nbsp;facing more of an uphill battle&nbsp;will be the iPad. Industry-wide tablet sales should fall double digits this quarter. Will Apple stock react positively to earnings day news? Below are three possibilities.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/229df7516f081f1206d3b7d6a7d4157c\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"703\"><span>Figure 1: iPhone lineup.</span></p>\n<p>Base case: Apple stock $132-$136</p>\n<p>It is most likely that Apple will deliver record-breaking results this time. A confluence of positive factors should support the company’s financial performance: a strong product and service lineup, lingering effects of the stay-at-home economy, and strength of the US consumer.</p>\n<p>The big question, however, is whether the market will reward the stock after earnings. Wall Street analysts have already raised their expectations.According to Stock Rover, earnings per share (EPS) consensus has climbed nearly 10% since last earnings season, to a fiscal second quarter record $0.98.</p>\n<p>Apple’s&nbsp;valuations have also been rising, as the chart below depicts. While metrics like price-to-earnings (P/E) have come down since late January, they remain near all-time highs.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2159db2e22f9c952fae20fb5f91e71ac\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"464\"><span>Figure 2: AAPL's historical valuation multiples.</span></p>\n<p>As a base-case scenario, I believe that Apple will deliver the goods, but the stock will struggle to climb to fresh peaks. I expect to see share price of $132 to $136 on Thursday morning, at the open, absent major developments.</p>\n<p><b>Best case: Apple stock above $140</b></p>\n<p>But instead, could Apple stock march towards peak levels once again? The answer is yes, of course, provided that one or a few of the following end up happening:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Blowout fiscal second quarter results. The numbers would have to suggest not only strong past performance, but optimism for what lies ahead;</li>\n <li>Reinstatement of guidance. Apple’s management team stopped providing its next-quarter outlook&nbsp;when the pandemic started, in fiscal second quarter 2020;</li>\n <li>A bump in cash return to shareholders.Acceleration of Apple’s buyback&nbsp;program or a higher-than-average&nbsp;increase in the dividend payment&nbsp;could do the trick.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>As a best-case scenario, fiscal second quarter results and the outlook for the rest of the year could be so strong as to cause the current 2021 EPS estimate of $4.44 to be revised higher. This could propel Apple share price. A post-earnings gain of at least 7% would represent fresh all-time highs.</p>\n<p><b>Worst case: Apple stock below $130</b></p>\n<p>Flip the assumptions above, and we have a worst-case scenario for Apple stock: (1) results that are good, but below or barely at expectations; (2) no guidance for fiscal third quarter; (3) status-quo dividend and buyback announcements.</p>\n<p>I find it unlikely that Apple share price will drop precipitously, considering the strong momentum of the business and the apparent support at $120 per share in 2021 (see dotted red arrow below). But a decline to less than $130 apiece, levels reached as recently as early April, is not out of question.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cdef79f0e6e2aa074430d9d972639b39\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"649\"><span>Figure 3: AAPL's share price in the past 12 months.</span></p>\n<p><b>Watch Apple’s peers</b></p>\n<p>By the time Apple is ready to release earnings, on Wednesday, some of its peers will have done so already: Tesla on Monday and Microsoft on Tuesday are key examples.</p>\n<p>Keep an eye on market reaction to these two reports. Great results coupled with muted stock price movement could be a bad sign for Apple. The Apple Maven will review the Apple earnings report, conference call and Apple stock reaction via live blog, starting at 4 p.m. EST;\nWall Street analysts expect to see outstanding numbers: revenues should climb 32% year-over-year, and earnings per share could reach as high as 53%;\nI believe that one of two product segments will shine brighter than the rest.The iPhone, for example, should benefit from a solid lineup and easy comps. Expect strong-double digit growth.\nThe Mac is the other candidate for most successful segment in the quarter. Apple’s PC sales could rise by 50% or more, also over easy 2020 comps;\nProbably facing more of an uphill battle will be the iPad. Industry-wide tablet sales should fall double digits this quarter. Below are three possibilities.\nFigure 1: iPhone lineup.\nBase case: Apple stock $132-$136\nIt is most likely that Apple will deliver record-breaking results this time. A confluence of positive factors should support the company’s financial performance: a strong product and service lineup, lingering effects of the stay-at-home economy, and strength of the US consumer.\nThe big question, however, is whether the market will reward the stock after earnings. Wall Street analysts have already raised their expectations.According to Stock Rover, earnings per share (EPS) consensus has climbed nearly 10% since last earnings season, to a fiscal second quarter record $0.98.\nApple’s valuations have also been rising, as the chart below depicts. While metrics like price-to-earnings (P/E) have come down since late January, they remain near all-time highs.\nFigure 2: AAPL's historical valuation multiples.\nAs a base-case scenario, I believe that Apple will deliver the goods, but the stock will struggle to climb to fresh peaks. I expect to see share price of $132 to $136 on Thursday morning, at the open, absent major developments.\nBest case: Apple stock above $140\nBut instead, could Apple stock march towards peak levels once again? The answer is yes, of course, provided that one or a few of the following end up happening:\n\nBlowout fiscal second quarter results. The numbers would have to suggest not only strong past performance, but optimism for what lies ahead;\nReinstatement of guidance. Apple’s management team stopped providing its next-quarter outlook when the pandemic started, in fiscal second quarter 2020;\nA bump in cash return to shareholders.Acceleration of Apple’s buyback program or a higher-than-average increase in the dividend payment could do the trick.\n\nAs a best-case scenario, fiscal second quarter results and the outlook for the rest of the year could be so strong as to cause the current 2021 EPS estimate of $4.44 to be revised higher. This could propel Apple share price. A post-earnings gain of at least 7% would represent fresh all-time highs.\nWorst case: Apple stock below $130\nFlip the assumptions above, and we have a worst-case scenario for Apple stock: (1) results that are good, but below or barely at expectations; (2) no guidance for fiscal third quarter; (3) status-quo dividend and buyback announcements.\nI find it unlikely that Apple share price will drop precipitously, considering the strong momentum of the business and the apparent support at $120 per share in 2021 (see dotted red arrow below). The initial&nbsp;drama&nbsp;was followed by a month or two of dithering. That doubt is over. The market is unquestionably going through a major shift. The question is how long it will continue.</p>\n<p>Within the stock market, the rotation is most pronounced in the move from “momentum” stocks, which had previously been winning, to “value” companies, which look cheap compared to their fundamentals. That change, by Bloomberg’s measure, is about as violent as any in history:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6386f1bd17b4e321382ee6a26f1e732d\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>The underlying driver for stocks is the bond market. The rotation toward&nbsp;higher yields in bonds has slowed a little but not stopped, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield topped 1.6% again in Monday trading. Its trend now appears to be plainly upward:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d0ed893e22bdf9d9d36694e66417d87a\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>Underlying the move in bonds is a shift in views about the economy, driven in part by the news from Washington that Democrats should be able to push through a $1.9 trillion stimulus package. Meanwhile, there is also excitement over the fight against the pandemic, with the likely reopening date for the economy steadily moving forward. For one dramatic demonstration of this, watch the relative performance since the beginning of last year of Netflix Inc., a pure play on streaming at home, and Walt Disney Co., a bet on streaming content that also comes with a large theme park business. Disney still lags Netflix since the beginning of last year, but has outperformed it by almost 90% since its nadir last July:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/403e2b3fa7d95012d5e6269246099190\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>So, a rotation is under way. That raises many questions —&nbsp;far too many to answer here. But here are some of the more important issues.</p>\n<p><b>What’s Bubbling?</b></p>\n<p>The question of whether we are in a stock market bubble persists. A lot depends on how to account for the undoubted prop that the market receives from low bond yields. But to an extent, the point of a bubble is that it goes beyond a point where valuation matters; it is already overvalued and the question is how overvalued it can become. That is a question of mass psychology, which can be revealed in stock charts. This is one of those times when looking at patterns in prices can have some relevance.</p>\n<p>The greatest fear is that we are staging a repeat of the great dot-com bubble that burst almost exactly 21 years ago. Rather than look at the highly speculative dot-coms that went to market without profits or even revenues to their names, this chart compares the Nasdaq-100, a tech-dominated group of large companies, against the equal-weighted version of the S&amp;P 500, a measure of the performance of the “average stock.” As can be seen, this was a bubble for the ages:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6f5d824bd0d01b4953bbda519d9a91ea\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>Over the year to the Nasdaq’s peak, the average stock went nowhere. And barely nine months after that, the index had given up all of its gains over the previous 12 months, and was lagging the average stock. Now, this is the same exercise repeated for the year running up to the Nasdaq-100’s high last month:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/555180102d590a989cf61e0477a0ae7a\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>Tech stocks became badly overpriced and are now having a correction that probably has further to go. Meanwhile the equal-weighted S&amp;P 500 is barely below its all-time high. At this level the Nasdaq-100, in behavioral terms,&nbsp;isn’t a repeat of 1999-2000.</p>\n<p>However, if we look at the most exciting stock of the moment, the Ark Innovation exchange-traded fund managed by Cathie Wood, we do see a pattern that’s distinctly reminiscent of the internet craze:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/687b2e418468de72b7c3c5fa4c6209ec\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>The stocks held by Ark are potential “disrupters” that are for the most part smaller than members of the Nasdaq-100 (Tesla Inc. is a big exception). Wood herself gave&nbsp;a great interview with Bloomberg TV&nbsp;in which she conceded that the market was “broadening,” which is a positive sign of recovering optimism. She also contended that the stocks faring best — such as banks, energy companies&nbsp;and auto manufacturers — are exactly the kind of businesses that stand to be disrupted in the long run by Ark’s investments. These are all valid arguments; buying Amazon.com Inc. in late 1999 proved to be a superlative 20-year investment, even if you had to wait a decade before you broke even. But at this point, the most exciting speculative stocks do look as though they’ve been&nbsp;partying like it’s 1999.</p>\n<p><b>Self-Stabilizers</b></p>\n<p>One point about market rotations is that they come with in-built stabilizers. For example, optimism on growth and fear of inflation leads to higher interest rates, which in turn dampen growth and inflation. This becomes a key question now. Estimates for U.S. growth in 2021 have risen sharply thanks to the success of its vaccine program. Forecasts for many other countries are actively declining due to vaccine disappointment. This means that yields are rising everywhere —&nbsp;but far faster in the U.S. than the rest of the developed world. The following charts from Credit Suisse Group AG demonstrate this nicely:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/abc0dc20ce12b638eb3d0ffcc8c40b0e\" tg-width=\"681\" tg-height=\"852\"></p>\n<p>How does this change things? If lots of foreigners pour into Treasuries to take advantage of the higher yields, then the yields won’t rise so much. This was a point that David Tepper, the hedge fund investor who runs Appaloosa Management, made early Monday, to much excitement. That effect hasn’t happened yet. Alternatively, the higher yields in the U.S. succeed in attracting flows that push the dollar up. A higher dollar tends to damp&nbsp;inflation. Over the last four years, there is a distinct tendency for the currency to follow the path set by the gap between U.S. and German bond yields, with a lag of a couple of months. And that is already happening:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad3285dc614eb4b0ededa421f50ffd7d\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>The dollar’s rebound has taken many by surprise, and it could change much of the presiding narrative of a big reflation this year. It could also derail&nbsp;investment in emerging markets. Higher Treasury yields have had their customary effect of messing up emerging market carry trades —&nbsp;the practice of borrowing in currencies with low rates and parking in countries with higher rates, pocketing the carry. A promising rebound for emerging carry trades looks as though it has been snuffed out:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a7d87cf6d8b588ec38ec6fa81561f82b\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p><b>Self-Fulfilling Prophecies</b></p>\n<p>Markets don’t just have their own stabilizers. They also have the ability to make a prophecy and know that it will come true. This could be about to happen in the great rotation between value and momentum.</p>\n<p>One popular trade among quants is to combine value and momentum. An objection is that the two will tend to cancel each other out, and much of the time they do. But every so often, there is a moment when value stocks have momentum, and the strategy goes into overdrive. Such a moment appears to be at hand.</p>\n<p>The following chart&nbsp;is from Mike Wilson, head U.S. equity strategist at Morgan Stanley, who points out that with the anniversary of the great selloff last March, the stocks that appear to have momentum over the last 12 months will change. Rather than being crowded with tech stocks, quants looking to buy “momentum stocks” will instead start to add banks and energy groups. So a rotation that started with a push from economic fundamentals could receive a second wind from technical factors:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e1e4658b732782ed964dda7f66eed987\" tg-width=\"1022\" tg-height=\"654\"></p>\n<p>This isn’t&nbsp;so much a market stabilizer as a market destabilizer, driven by the weight of money wielded by institutions. This powerful effect could become more disruptive.</p>\n<p><b>The Power of Bonds</b></p>\n<p>So exactly how much influence do bonds have over stocks? I’d like to mention two interesting angles on this profound question. First, Deltec Bank &amp; Trust Ltd. makes the interesting point that when yields are at very low levels, bond volatility almost by definition gets that much greater when there is any rise. This is the way Hugo Rogers of Deltec puts it:</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>In a way it is the certainty of ‘low forever’ rates and the unlimited buying potential that is most stimulative. This is reflected in bond volatility.&nbsp;But now that the post COVID recovery has begun, now inflation expectations are justifiably rising, and with fears of another high-teens budget deficit, so is bond market volatility.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n <i>This is a foundation of markets, a key component of financial conditions. As long rates rise, as bond market volatility increases, funding tightens.&nbsp;We have explained some of the link to other markets, but the market beyond bonds themselves, that is most effected are equities priced using zero cost of capital (unicorns).It is no surprise to see companies making no cash flow, priced off blue sky thinking, falling fastest in this market. We expect this to continue.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>And indeed, if we look at the performance of Ark Innovation, compared with the MOVE index of bond volatility on an inverted scale, there is a family resemblance. While bond volatility appears under control, speculative tech companies do very well; any rise holds them back:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4ffe8c874f6c050157a432719967df81\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"></p>\n<p>If bond volatility persists, we can expect the difficulties for last year’s leaders to continue too.</p>\n<p>What of the broader question of whether lower bond yields justify higher valuations on stocks? It is time for an entry from Robert Shiller of Yale University, who late last year introduced the concept of the “Excess CAPE Yield” (his measure of the long-term earnings yield on stocks minus the 10-year bond yield). The higher this gauge, the more we can expect stocks to beat bonds in future. Thanks to low bond yields, the ECY is positive at present, suggesting that stocks should indeed beat bonds.</p>\n<p>At the peak of the boom in 2000, the ECY was negative, meaning that earnings yields had dropped below bond yields, so the indicator correctly signaled that stocks were due for a period of terrible relative performance. The ECY is telling us that the current stock market isn’t as wildly overvalued as in 2000. But that is faint praise. Is it telling us that this is a great time to buy stocks?</p>\n<p>Many interpreted it that way. But&nbsp;Shiller wrote a column for the New York Times&nbsp;over the weekend that corrects that impression.</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>Right now the E.C.Y. is 3.15 percent. That is roughly its average for the last 20 years. It is relatively high, and it predicts that stocks will outperform bonds. Current interest rates for bonds make that a very low hurdle.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n <i>Consider that when you factor in inflation, the 10-year Treasury note, yielding around 1.4 percent, will most likely pay back less in real dollars at maturity than your original investment. Stocks may not have the usual high long-run expectations (the CAPE tells us that), but at least there is a positive long-run expected return.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n <i>Putting all of this together, I’d say the stock market is high but still in some ways more attractive than the bond market.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Shiller isn’t telling us to fill our boots with stocks, so much as to be very careful about bonds. It’s quite possible for both to fall together. If you find this disappointing, he understands:</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>The markets may well be dangerously high right now, and I wish my measurements provided clearer guidance, but they don’t. We can’t accurately forecast the moment-by-moment movements of birds, and the stock and bond markets are, unfortunately, much the same.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>The bottom line is to continue to be careful out there. We will have to endure plenty more rotation before this is over.</p>\n<p><b>Survival Tips</b></p>\n<p>It has been hard to write this after a day spent largely giving my opinion on the Harry and Meghan interview. Sometimes being a British expat can be a problem. Anyway, on a royal theme, here is a remarkable clip of Prince playing George Harrison's&nbsp;<i>While My Guitar Gently Weeps</i>, in a band that includes Tom Petty and George's own son - who seems thoroughly to enjoy Prince's guitar solo, which comes towards the end of the clip. On a slightly more tenuous royal theme you could sit down and listen to&nbsp;<i>Their Satanic Majesties Request</i>&nbsp;by the Rolling Stones, or&nbsp;<i>Killer Queen</i>&nbsp;by Queen.</p>\n<p>If Harry and Meghan's travails have whetted the appetite for even more Windsors drama then my favorite actress in the part of Elizabeth II to date is Helen Mirren in&nbsp;<i>The Queen</i>. She also did a turn as&nbsp;<i>Elizabeth I</i>&nbsp;a year earlier —&nbsp;a rather more dynamic queen who had real and not figurative blood on her hands. The initial drama was followed by a month or two of dithering. That doubt is over. The market is unquestionably going through a major shift. The question is how long it will continue.\nWithin the stock market, the rotation is most pronounced in the move from “momentum” stocks, which had previously been winning, to “value” companies, which look cheap compared to their fundamentals. That change, by Bloomberg’s measure, is about as violent as any in history:\n\nThe underlying driver for stocks is the bond market. The rotation toward higher yields in bonds has slowed a little but not stopped, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield topped 1.6% again in Monday trading. Its trend now appears to be plainly upward:\n\nUnderlying the move in bonds is a shift in views about the economy, driven in part by the news from Washington that Democrats should be able to push through a $1.9 trillion stimulus package. Meanwhile, there is also excitement over the fight against the pandemic, with the likely reopening date for the economy steadily moving forward. For one dramatic demonstration of this, watch the relative performance since the beginning of last year of Netflix Inc., a pure play on streaming at home, and Walt Disney Co., a bet on streaming content that also comes with a large theme park business. Disney still lags Netflix since the beginning of last year, but has outperformed it by almost 90% since its nadir last July:\n\nSo, a rotation is under way. That raises many questions — far too many to answer here. But here are some of the more important issues.\nWhat’s Bubbling?\nThe question of whether we are in a stock market bubble persists. A lot depends on how to account for the undoubted prop that the market receives from low bond yields. But to an extent, the point of a bubble is that it goes beyond a point where valuation matters; it is already overvalued and the question is how overvalued it can become. That is a question of mass psychology, which can be revealed in stock charts. This is one of those times when looking at patterns in prices can have some relevance.\nThe greatest fear is that we are staging a repeat of the great dot-com bubble that burst almost exactly 21 years ago. Rather than look at the highly speculative dot-coms that went to market without profits or even revenues to their names, this chart compares the Nasdaq-100, a tech-dominated group of large companies, against the equal-weighted version of the S&P 500, a measure of the performance of the “average stock.” As can be seen, this was a bubble for the ages:\n\nOver the year to the Nasdaq’s peak, the average stock went nowhere. And barely nine months after that, the index had given up all of its gains over the previous 12 months, and was lagging the average stock. Now, this is the same exercise repeated for the year running up to the Nasdaq-100’s high last month:\n\nTech stocks became badly overpriced and are now having a correction that probably has further to go. Meanwhile the equal-weighted S&P 500 is barely below its all-time high. At this level the Nasdaq-100, in behavioral terms, isn’t a repeat of 1999-2000.\nHowever, if we look at the most exciting stock of the moment, the Ark Innovation exchange-traded fund managed by Cathie Wood, we do see a pattern that’s distinctly reminiscent of the internet craze:\n\nThe stocks held by Ark are potential “disrupters” that are for the most part smaller than members of the Nasdaq-100 (Tesla Inc. is a big exception). Wood herself gave a great interview with Bloomberg TV in which she conceded that the market was “broadening,” which is a positive sign of recovering optimism. She also contended that the stocks faring best — such as banks, energy companies and auto manufacturers — are exactly the kind of businesses that stand to be disrupted in the long run by Ark’s investments. These are all valid arguments; buying Amazon.com Inc. in late 1999 proved to be a superlative 20-year investment, even if you had to wait a decade before you broke even. But at this point, the most exciting speculative stocks do look as though they’ve been partying like it’s 1999.\nSelf-Stabilizers\nOne point about market rotations is that they come with in-built stabilizers. For example, optimism on growth and fear of inflation leads to higher interest rates, which in turn dampen growth and inflation. This becomes a key question now. Estimates for U.S. growth in 2021 have risen sharply thanks to the success of its vaccine program. Forecasts for many other countries are actively declining due to vaccine disappointment. This means that yields are rising everywhere — but far faster in the U.S. than the rest of the developed world. The following charts from Credit Suisse Group AG demonstrate this nicely:\n\nHow does this change things? If lots of foreigners pour into Treasuries to take advantage of the higher yields, then the yields won’t rise so much. This was a point that David Tepper, the hedge fund investor who runs Appaloosa Management, made early Monday, to much excitement. That effect hasn’t happened yet. Alternatively, the higher yields in the U.S. succeed in attracting flows that push the dollar up. A higher dollar tends to damp inflation. Over the last four years, there is a distinct tendency for the currency to follow the path set by the gap between U.S. and German bond yields, with a lag of a couple of months. And that is already happening:\n\nThe dollar’s rebound has taken many by surprise, and it could change much of the presiding narrative of a big reflation this year. It could also derail investment in emerging markets. Higher Treasury yields have had their customary effect of messing up emerging market carry trades — the practice of borrowing in currencies with low rates and parking in countries with higher rates, pocketing the carry. A promising rebound for emerging carry trades looks as though it has been snuffed out:\n\nSelf-Fulfilling Prophecies\nMarkets don’t just have their own stabilizers. They also have the ability to make a prophecy and know that it will come true. This could be about to happen in the great rotation between value and momentum.\nOne popular trade among quants is to combine value and momentum. An objection is that the two will tend to cancel each other out, and much of the time they do. But every so often, there is a moment when value stocks have momentum, and the strategy goes into overdrive. Such a moment appears to be at hand.\nThe following chart is from Mike Wilson, head U.S. equity strategist at Morgan Stanley, who points out that with the anniversary of the great selloff last March, the stocks that appear to have momentum over the last 12 months will change. Rather than being crowded with tech stocks, quants looking to buy “momentum stocks” will instead start to add banks and energy groups. So a rotation that started with a push from economic fundamentals could receive a second wind from technical factors:\n\nThis isn’t so much a market stabilizer as a market destabilizer, driven by the weight of money wielded by institutions. This powerful effect could become more disruptive.\nThe Power of Bonds\nSo exactly how much influence do bonds have over stocks? I’d like to mention two interesting angles on this profound question. First, Deltec Bank & Trust Ltd. makes the interesting point that when yields are at very low levels, bond volatility almost by definition gets that much greater when there is any rise. This is the way Hugo Rogers of Deltec puts it:\n\nIn a way it is the certainty of ‘low forever’ rates and the unlimited buying potential that is most stimulative. This is reflected in bond volatility. But now that the post COVID recovery has begun, now inflation expectations are justifiably rising, and with fears of another high-teens budget deficit, so is bond market volatility.\n\n\nThis is a foundation of markets, a key component of financial conditions. As long rates rise, as bond market volatility increases, funding tightens. We have explained some of the link to other markets, but the market beyond bonds themselves, that is most effected are equities priced using zero cost of capital (unicorns).It is no surprise to see companies making no cash flow, priced off blue sky thinking, falling fastest in this market. We expect this to continue.\n\nAnd indeed, if we look at the performance of Ark Innovation, compared with the MOVE index of bond volatility on an inverted scale, there is a family resemblance. While bond volatility appears under control, speculative tech companies do very well; any rise holds them back:\n\nIf bond volatility persists, we can expect the difficulties for last year’s leaders to continue too.\nWhat of the broader question of whether lower bond yields justify higher valuations on stocks? It is time for an entry from Robert Shiller of Yale University, who late last year introduced the concept of the “Excess CAPE Yield” (his measure of the long-term earnings yield on stocks minus the 10-year bond yield). The higher this gauge, the more we can expect stocks to beat bonds in future. Thanks to low bond yields, the ECY is positive at present, suggesting that stocks should indeed beat bonds.\nAt the peak of the boom in 2000, the ECY was negative, meaning that earnings yields had dropped below bond yields, so the indicator correctly signaled that stocks were due for a period of terrible relative performance. The ECY is telling us that the current stock market isn’t as wildly overvalued as in 2000. But that is faint praise. Is it telling us that this is a great time to buy stocks?\nMany interpreted it that way. But Shiller wrote a column for the New York Times over the weekend that corrects that impression.\n\nRight now the E.C.Y. is 3.15 percent. That is roughly its average for the last 20 years. It is relatively high, and it predicts that stocks will outperform bonds. Current interest rates for bonds make that a very low hurdle.\n\n\nConsider that when you factor in inflation, the 10-year Treasury note, yielding around 1.4 percent, will most likely pay back less in real dollars at maturity than your original investment. Stocks may not have the usual high long-run expectations (the CAPE tells us that), but at least there is a positive long-run expected return.\n\n\nPutting all of this together, I’d say the stock market is high but still in some ways more attractive than the bond market.\n\nShiller isn’t telling us to fill our boots with stocks, so much as to be very careful about bonds. It’s quite possible for both to fall together. If you find this disappointing, he understands:\n\nThe markets may well be dangerously high right now, and I wish my measurements provided clearer guidance, but they don’t. We can’t accurately forecast the moment-by-moment movements of birds, and the stock and bond markets are, unfortunately, much the same.\n\nThe bottom line is to continue to be careful out there. We will have to endure plenty more rotation before this is over.\nSurvival Tips\nIt has been hard to write this after a day spent largely giving my opinion on the Harry and Meghan interview. href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LI\">理想汽车</a>和<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NIO\">蔚来</a>，不比不知道，一比——<strong>反差</strong>吓一跳。</p><p>比如，同是造车卖车，起步更早的蔚来依然不能盈利，<strong>理想却开始盈利了</strong>。</p><p>与之相对应的是，用一款车销量不断接近蔚来三款车的理想，市值却差了3倍之多——蔚来680亿美元，理想不到220亿美元。</p><img src=\"https://fid-75186.picgzc.qpic.cn/20210307163307407d173uuzxfqv5qp9\"/><p>而且，就在年报披露之后，依然不能盈利的蔚来，却比理想得到了更多的分析师认可和看好。</p><p>这是什么逻辑？</p><p>大家都是造车卖车的，纯电和不纯电，偏见就这么明显吗？</p><p>实际上，答案就藏在财报中。<strong>理想和蔚来，度过了一个怎样的2020？</strong></p><p>先看理想汽车。</p><p>理想第四季度及2020全年财报披露：</p><p>第四季度，理想交付了<strong>14,464辆</strong>理想ONE，环比增长67.0%，创下季度交付量新高。2020年全年交付量为<strong>32,624辆</strong>。</p><p>2020年第四季度总收入为<strong>41.5亿</strong>元人民币，较上一季度25.1亿元人民币增长<strong>65.2％</strong>。2020年第四季度毛利率为<strong>17.5％</strong>。</p><p>Q4<span>净利润</span>为1.075亿元人民币，2020年第三季度为净亏损1.069亿元人民币。</p><p>这是理想首次实现季度净利润为正，即首次突破盈亏平衡线，实现盈利。</p><p>全年来看，理想2020年<strong>总收入</strong>为94.6亿元，全年毛利率达到<strong>16.4%</strong>。</p><p>2020年净亏损为<strong>1.517亿元</strong>，较2019年的24.4亿元同比<strong>收窄93.8%。</strong></p><p>所以综合而言，照着如此势头下去，理想实现全年盈利，也似乎只是时间问题。</p><p>接着看蔚来：</p><p>第四季度交付了<strong>8224辆</strong>，环比增长高达111%，2020年全年交付量为<strong>43728辆</strong>。</p><p>2020年第四季度总收入为66.41亿人民币，较上一季度45.26亿元人民币增长，2020年第四季度毛利率高达17.2%</p><p>Q4净利润为净亏损13.87亿人民币，第三季度为净亏损10.47亿人民币。</p><p>纵观全年，蔚来总共营收<strong>162.57亿元</strong>人民币，全年毛利率则由去年的-15.3%提升至今年的11.5%，而汽车业务也由去年的-9.9%提升至今年的12.7%。</p><p>2020年度净亏损，则收窄至53.04亿元人民币，相比2019年蔚来亏损了112.95亿人民币，有了一半以上的收窄。</p><p>虽然蔚来的势头并没有理想来的那么猛，但今年也是蔚来<strong>首次</strong>将毛利率从负转到正。<strong>理想&amp;蔚来，横向一比吓一跳</strong></p><p>如果说官方数据都是自卖自夸，看不出端倪，那么各项关键数据放一起，再用图表直观审视，真是不比不知道……</p><p><strong>营收：</strong></p><img src=\"https://fid-75186.picgzc.qpic.cn/20210307163316759d173qiuhuekgu4n\"/><p>是不是看出问题所在了？</p><p>2020年，理想真正开启完整交付的一年，全年完成交付3.2万辆。</p><p>也正是交付量的大幅提升。帮助理想迅速收窄了亏损。</p><p>（虽然理想自己宣称赚的钱有来自短期理财产品的收益）。</p><p>但整体上，理想印证了汽车公司的核心商业模式，造车-卖车-获得利润。</p><p>而蔚来这边，2020年旗下三款车，一共交付了4.3万辆，交付量仅是理想一款车的1.3倍。</p><p>但亏损却高达53亿人民币，竟是理想的35倍之多。</p><p>车卖的多，营收更多，结果还比人家更赔钱？蔚来的53亿亏损，究竟是啥原因？</p><p>或者说造成理想和蔚来反差的因素有哪些？</p><img src=\"https://fid-75186.picgzc.qpic.cn/20210307163318135d173qv11m4t8wqj\"/><p>羊毛出在羊身上，秘密藏在成本里，而两家的成本大头，一是研发，二是销售和管理支出。</p><p>首先来看看两家企业的<strong>研发支出。</strong></p><p>根据2019和2020年的财报数据，理想分别投入了<strong>11.7亿元</strong>和<strong>11亿元</strong>用于研发。</p><p>蔚来则要多得多，2019年的研发投入高达<strong>44.28亿元</strong>人民币，2020年为<strong>22.48亿</strong>。在研发方面的投入，蔚来是理想的几倍。不过蔚来营收确实也更大。</p><p>就需要进一步按占比看看，2020年理想的研发投入占比，占到了11.6%。蔚来则占比13.8%。所以在研发投入方面，蔚来确实更舍得花钱，但双方差距其实不是在这里拉开。</p><p>可能问题关键，还是<strong>销售和管理方面的支出</strong>。</p><p>2019年和2020年，理想在这方面分别投入了6.89亿元人民币和11.2亿人民币。</p><p>蔚来的数据为54.51亿元人民币和39.23亿。</p><img Until then, the story hasn’t really changed for troubled cannabis stocks such as&nbsp;<b>Sundial Growers</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>SNDL</u></b>). But don’t tell that to the retail investors who are bidding up SNDL stock.</p>\n<p>On one level, I understand the fascination. Sundial is a penny stock, but it has a niche in the premium segment of the cannabis sector. So if cannabis stocks do take off, SNDL stock could soar much higher. And with a stock price of $1.27 (as of this writing), a $1,500 investment buys you a whole lot of shares.</p>\n<p>And I can’t argue with those that bought the stock on Jan. 26, and have watched the stock climb over 170%. However, with a gain like that, you might expect investors to pocket their gains and move forward. Instead it looks like the trading crowd is lining up to see how high they can make SNDL stock go.</p>\n<p>Over the next few minutes, I’d like to steer you clear of that idea.</p>\n<p><b>Investors Are Not Seeing the Whole Picture</b></p>\n<p>On Feb. 19, Sundial announced it would be&nbsp;converting approximately 98.3 million warrants&nbsp;into shares at a price of 80 cents and $1.10. This is generating $89.1 million in cash for Sundial. At the same time, Sundial announced it was issuing an additional 98.3 million warrants. These will give holders the right to purchase shares for $1.50 in the next 42 months.</p>\n<p>This can be a bullish argument for buying SNDL stock. Nascent companies in a sector like cannabis can use stock offerings and issuing warrants as part of a strategy to pay down debt and accumulate cash. And Sundial has managed to do both of those.</p>\n<p>However, the other part of the story is that investors want to see progress in terms of revenue and earnings. And that’s where Sundial is failing to deliver. In fact, in its most recent quarter, the company reported a 33% drop in revenue. And that was after a nearly 37% decline in revenue in the prior quarter. To raise even more concern, in March the company announced it was going to&nbsp;dispose of its Kamloops facility&nbsp;in British Columbia and suspend construction of its Merritt BC plant both due to declining consumer demand.</p>\n<p>But that didn’t stop the company from giving executives $2.47 million in share-based compensation. That would be nearly 20% of its sales. Executive compensation can be a tricky thing, but if nothing else the optics look bad.</p>\n<p><b>Is Sundial Looking to Buy or Get Bought?</b></p>\n<p>The company’s$22 million investmentinto Indiva could be another reference point that bulls can reference. However, this investment is being done in the form of a brokered private placement. By itself that doesn’t mean anything. However, the fact that Sundial is faltering in revenue coupled with the recent payout to executives raise two caution flags as to the reasons Sundial is making this investment.</p>\n<p>Plus, as Mark Hake details, Sundial&nbsp;lent $58.9 million CAD&nbsp;to a division of&nbsp;<b>Zenabis Global</b>&nbsp;(OTCMKTS:<b><u>ZBISF</u></b>) &nbsp;which as Hake points out, it is unlikely that Zenabis will be able to repay.</p>\n<p><b>You Can Wait on SNDL Stock</b></p>\n<p>In a prior article, I suggested that the best hope for Sundial bulls might be to have the&nbsp;company get acquired. Adding Indiva’s portfolio of edibles to its product line may make Sundial a more attractive acquisition even with its share price rising. But the fact remains the financials for Sundial suggest that they have a narrow path to success.</p>\n<p>Unless you have a high appetite for risk, you should wait until the company reports earnings in late March to see if the revenue picture has improved. Investors that are looking to buy SNDL stock as a quick trade may be rewarded. The company was founded in 2014, currently, it has ~3700 employees, and it went public in the second half of 2020. With backing from Alibaba (BABA) and other major banks in China, XPeng along with its competitors NIO (NIO), BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) (OTCPK:BYDDY), and Li Auto (LI) are some of the hottest names in the electric vehicle business in the region. As a result, its stock has significantly appreciated in late 2020 and currently, it outperforms S&amp;P 500 Index on a 1-year chart.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb417ed0810d95ddc7f6926e77957237\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>XPeng's first car is an SUV called G3, the production of which began in 2018. The car in its basic package could drive around 300 kilometers on one battery charge, while a higher package has a greater battery capacity and could drive more than 400 kilometers on a single charge. The price of G3 varies on the package and in China its price starts at ~$21000 and goes all the way up to ~$29000. XPeng's second car is a sedan called P7 that was released last year and which is a direct competitor ofTesla's(TSLA) Model 3. P7's price in China varies from ~$33000 to ~$50000, and in January, the carreceiveda major over-the-air upgrade that added new features such as autonomous driving assistance and an updated operating system.</p>\n<p>In early March, XPeng will release its Q4 and FY20 earnings results, so for now we have to deep dive into the company'sQ3results to find out what's going on with the business. In Q3, XPeng significantly increased its revenues by 342.5% Y/Y to $293.1 million. Revenues from the vehicle sales were $279.6 million, while revenues from services were $13.6 million. At the same time, the company's non-GAAP EPS was -$0.32, while its net loss stood at $169.2 million. Despite the loss, XPeng increased the number of its supercharging stations to 135 and managed to increase its deliveries during the period by 265.8% Y/Y to 8,578 units.</p>\n<p>In addition, one of the biggest advantages of XPeng is that it doesn't have an overleveraged balance sheet since at the end of Q3 ithad$2.65 billion in cash reserves and only $347 million in total debt. Also, the company's financials have been improving in recent quarters and at the end of Q3, its gross margin was 4.6% against -2.7% a year ago, while its vehicle margin was 3.2% against -10.8% a year ago. Thanks to such an improvement, the street analysts have upgraded their outlook on the company, and its currentconsensusprice target is $57.95, above the current market price.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the biggest downside of XPeng is that it'sprojectedto generate less than $1 billion in revenues in 2020 and around $2 billion in revenues in 2021, yet its stock trades at a market cap of ~$35 billion. Since it's hard to justify the current valuation, it's safe to say that we're in the middle of an EV bubble, as other EV manufacturers are also significantly overvalued and worth more than traditional automotive behemoths that produce millions of cars every year. As a result, if XPeng experiences a decline in deliveries at any given time, then there's a risk that the street will lose faith in its ability to drive growth and as a result, its stock will tumble. The good thing is that that hasn't happened yet and there's no reason to be concerned about it at this stage.</p>\n<p>The reality is that XPeng is in its growth phase, so the market doesn't really care that the company is not going to be profitable anytime soon or that it trades at a significant premium. As long as XPeng continues to increase its deliveries and expand capacity, then it has all the chances to appreciate in the same way that Tesla appreciated in recent years. Currently, the goal of XPeng is to continue to expand and it plans to release two additional electric vehicles in the next two years. In addition, it plans to finish its second factory in Guangzhou in late 2022, which will help it to increase its annualcapacityfrom 100,000 cars to ~250,000. Since the demand for EVs is only going toincrease, XPeng's growth story will continue and the momentum is unlikely to fade away anytime soon.</p>\n<p>The downside of XPeng is that in FY20 itdelivered27,041 cars, while its competitors NIO and Li Auto delivered 43,728 and 32,624 cars, respectively. However, we shouldn't forget that XPeng's flagship sedan P7 went into production only in the summer of 2020 and that the company experienced a bump in deliveries only late in the year. In Q4 its deliveries increased by 303% Y/Y to 12,964 units, while in December alone deliveries increased by 326% Y/Y. In addition, considering that in January alone XPeng alreadydelivered6,015 cars, which represents an increase of 470% Y/Y, there's every reason to believe that the company will catch up to its competitors in 2021, and thanks to its strategic market positioning it has all the chances to deliver more cars than the rest this year.</p>\n<p>Considering that the full earnings results for Q4 and FY20 will be released in early March, there's every reason to believe that the EV momentum will not disappear and XPeng will be able to appreciate in the near-term despite the overvaluation thanks to the growth of its deliveries. Despite being significantly overvalued by traditional valuation metrics, XPeng along with other EV manufacturers have experienced a surge in deliveries in recent quarters and as a result, there's a high chance that they'll continue to trade at high premiums in the foreseeable future. For that reason, we decided to buy XPeng shares ahead of its earnings in early March and plan to hold our position in the company as long as the overall industry momentum holds.\nPreparing for an All-Electric Future\nXPeng is a Chinese-based EV manufacturer that's headquartered in Guangzhou. The company was founded in 2014, currently, it has ~3700 employees, and it went public in the second half of 2020. With backing from Alibaba (BABA) and other major banks in China, XPeng along with its competitors NIO (NIO), BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF) (OTCPK:BYDDY), and Li Auto (LI) are some of the hottest names in the electric vehicle business in the region. As a result, its stock has significantly appreciated in late 2020 and currently, it outperforms S&P 500 Index on a 1-year chart.\nChart: Seeking Alpha\nXPeng's first car is an SUV called G3, the production of which began in 2018. The car in its basic package could drive around 300 kilometers on one battery charge, while a higher package has a greater battery capacity and could drive more than 400 kilometers on a single charge. The price of G3 varies on the package and in China its price starts at ~$21000 and goes all the way up to ~$29000. XPeng's second car is a sedan called P7 that was released last year and which is a direct competitor ofTesla's(TSLA) Model 3. P7's price in China varies from ~$33000 to ~$50000, and in January, the carreceiveda major over-the-air upgrade that added new features such as autonomous driving assistance and an updated operating system.\nIn early March, XPeng will release its Q4 and FY20 earnings results, so for now we have to deep dive into the company'sQ3results to find out what's going on with the business. In Q3, XPeng significantly increased its revenues by 342.5% Y/Y to $293.1 million. Revenues from the vehicle sales were $279.6 million, while revenues from services were $13.6 million. At the same time, the company's non-GAAP EPS was -$0.32, while its net loss stood at $169.2 million. Despite the loss, XPeng increased the number of its supercharging stations to 135 and managed to increase its deliveries during the period by 265.8% Y/Y to 8,578 units.\nIn addition, one of the biggest advantages of XPeng is that it doesn't have an overleveraged balance sheet since at the end of Q3 ithad$2.65 billion in cash reserves and only $347 million in total debt. Also, the company's financials have been improving in recent quarters and at the end of Q3, its gross margin was 4.6% against -2.7% a year ago, while its vehicle margin was 3.2% against -10.8% a year ago. Thanks to such an improvement, the street analysts have upgraded their outlook on the company, and its currentconsensusprice target is $57.95, above the current market price.\nNevertheless, the biggest downside of XPeng is that it'sprojectedto generate less than $1 billion in revenues in 2020 and around $2 billion in revenues in 2021, yet its stock trades at a market cap of ~$35 billion. Since it's hard to justify the current valuation, it's safe to say that we're in the middle of an EV bubble, as other EV manufacturers are also significantly overvalued and worth more than traditional automotive behemoths that produce millions of cars every year. As a result, if XPeng experiences a decline in deliveries at any given time, then there's a risk that the street will lose faith in its ability to drive growth and as a result, its stock will tumble. The good thing is that that hasn't happened yet and there's no reason to be concerned about it at this stage.\nThe reality is that XPeng is in its growth phase, so the market doesn't really care that the company is not going to be profitable anytime soon or that it trades at a significant premium. As long as XPeng continues to increase its deliveries and expand capacity, then it has all the chances to appreciate in the same way that Tesla appreciated in recent years. Currently, the goal of XPeng is to continue to expand and it plans to release two additional electric vehicles in the next two years. In addition, it plans to finish its second factory in Guangzhou in late 2022, which will help it to increase its annualcapacityfrom 100,000 cars to ~250,000. Since the demand for EVs is only going toincrease, XPeng's growth story will continue and the momentum is unlikely to fade away anytime soon.\nThe downside of XPeng is that in FY20 itdelivered27,041 cars, while its competitors NIO and Li Auto delivered 43,728 and 32,624 cars, respectively. However, we shouldn't forget that XPeng's flagship sedan P7 went into production only in the summer of 2020 and that the company experienced a bump in deliveries only late in the year. In Q4 its deliveries increased by 303% Y/Y to 12,964 units, while in December alone deliveries increased by 326% Y/Y. In addition, considering that in January alone XPeng alreadydelivered6,015 cars, which represents an increase of 470% Y/Y, there's every reason to believe that the company will catch up to its competitors in 2021, and thanks to its strategic market positioning it has all the chances to deliver more cars than the rest this year.\nConsidering that the full earnings results for Q4 and FY20 will be released in early March, there's every reason to believe that the EV momentum will not disappear and XPeng will be able to appreciate in the near-term despite the overvaluation thanks to the growth of its deliveries.
