that's constantly evolving. Although the benchmark <b>S&amp;P 500</b> tends to head higher over long periods of time, the stocks primarily responsible for pushing the widely followed index to new heights change regularly.</p>\n<p>As an example, nine of the 10 largest stocks by market cap in 2004 are no longer in the top 10 as of today. In fact, insurer <b>AIG</b>&nbsp;now sits around No. 250 in the market cap rankings.</p>\n<p>While a number of today's largest publicly traded companies have a good shot at remaining near the top of the leaderboard in terms of market cap -- e.g., <b>Apple</b>, <b>Amazon</b>, <b>Microsoft</b>, and <b>Alphabet</b> -- many smaller companies could emerge as some of the market's biggest stocks within two decades.</p>\n<p>The following five stocks all have the innovative capacity and addressable markets to become some of the biggest stocks by 2040.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646991%2Fhourglass-coins-cash-bills-money-invest-rich-retirement-compound-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Square</h3>\n<p>Although it currently ranks just outside the top 100, in terms of market cap, fintech stock <b>Square</b> (NYSE:SQ) has an excellent chance to become <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the largest stocks by 2040. Square may also become one of the most instrumental payment companies in the world.</p>\n<p>For more than a decade, Square has leaned on its seller ecosystem as its foundational puzzle piece. This segment provides point-of-sale devices, analytics, loans, and other tools to help merchants succeed. In 2012, Square recognized $6.5 billion in gross payment volume (GPV) on its network. This year, the seller ecosystem could top $150 billion in GPV.</p>\n<p>Best of all, this merchant fee-driven segment is seeing a larger percentage of GPV originate from bigger businesses, as defined by annualized GPV. Larger merchants using its payment ecosystem should result in steadily growing gross profit.</p>\n<p>But the bigger long-term growth driver is peer-to-peer digital payments platform Cash App, which has grown its monthly active user base from 7 million to 36 million in three years, ended Dec. 31, 2020. Cash App allows Square to generate revenue from more channels, including investments, and is bringing in $55 in gross profit per user (as of Q2 2021), compared to a $5 cost to attract each new user.&nbsp; With the acquisition of buy now, pay later company <b>Afterpay</b>, Square will have its very own closed payment ecosystem, which could really ramp up its growth potential.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646991%2Fman-working-on-finances-at-home-laptop-budget-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Shopify</h3>\n<p>Though it's already a top-60 company by market cap, cloud-based e-commerce platform <b>Shopify</b> (NYSE:SHOP) may well be a top-10 company in size by 2040.</p>\n<p>The core trend backing Shopify's ascent is simple: more and more businesses are shifting their operating presence online. Whether it's stand-alone online retail sales or the ability to appear in third-party marketplaces, Shopify is ready to help businesses of all sizes grow their e-commerce business. For some context, FTI Consulting estimates that online retail market share as a percentage of total retail sales in the U.S. will grow from 18% in 2020 to 33% by 2030.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, the services Shopify provides are high-margin and generate predictable cash flow. While Shopify's addressable market for small businesses sits at $153 billion, according to the company, this figure doesn't account for continued innovation, the regular introduction of new products, or its ability to secure deals with larger businesses that purchase its $2,000 a month Shopify Plus subscription service.</p>\n<p>If Wall Street's consensus sales estimates prove accurate, sales for the company are on pace to more than quintuple by 2025, with no signs of slowing.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646991%2Fhotel-travel-luggage-bed-and-breakfast-airbnb-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Airbnb</h3>\n<p>Another big-time disruptor with aspirations of becoming one of the largest stocks by 2040 is the stay-and-hosting platform <b>Airbnb</b> (NASDAQ:ABNB). To do so, Airbnb would need to climb around 100 spots in the market cap rankings over the next 19 years.</p>\n<p>First and foremost, it's completely disrupting the traditional hotel operating model. According to Airbnb, over 4 million households worldwide are being used for hosting, and are, in many cases, cheaper, more convenient, and more private than local hotels. Though the pandemic threw a monkey wrench into the works for a couple of quarters, it's worth pointing out that bookings more than quintupled in the three-year period between the end of 2016 and the end of 2019.</p>\n<p>What's more, the fastest-growing segment for Airbnb is long-term stays (defined as 28 or more days). As the world becomes more remote in the wake of the pandemic, Airbnb has an opportunity to secure the lion's share of business from these work-from-anywhere individuals.</p>\n<p>And don't overlook the Experiences segment, which hires local experts to lead travelers on adventures. Experiences will allow Airbnb to further infiltrate the $9.2 trillion travel and tourism industry.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/72753f29fd92e186bec3ea1c1d331f6b\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"510\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM\">Salesforce</a></h3>\n<p>Whereas Airbnb has a big hill to climb to become one of the largest stocks by 2040, cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) software provider <b>Salesforce.com</b> (NYSE:CRM) is closer to that mark than any other company on this list. With a market cap nearing $300 billion, it looks to be well on its way to becoming a foundational tech giant that other businesses envy.</p>\n<p>For those unfamiliar with CRM software, it's used by consumer-facing businesses to improve customer relationships and grow sales. It can help oversee online marketing campaigns, handle product or service issues, and run predictive sales analyses on an existing client base.</p>\n<p>What makes Salesforce special is its utter dominance of the CRM space. According to IDC, it was responsible for 19.5% of global CRM spending in 2020. That's more than the No.'s 2 through 5 in market share on a combined basis. CRM software spending is slated for double-digit annual growth through at least mid-decade, and Salesforce's share of this trend is virtually untouchable.</p>\n<p>Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has also overseen a number of earnings-accretive and ecosystem-expanding acquisitions, including MuleSoft, Tableau, and the latest, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WORK\">Slack Technologies</a>. Inclusive of acquisitions, Salesforce can continue doubling its sales every four or five years.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F646991%2Fretail-shopping-store-online-sale-smartphone-website-ecommerce-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Sea Limited</h3>\n<p>A fifth and final company that could become one of the largest stocks by 2040 is Singapore-based <b>Sea Limited</b> (NYSE:SE). Sea sits just inside the top 50, at the moment, with a market cap of nearly $200 billion.</p>\n<p>Sea's secret weapon is that it has not one or two, but three rapidly growing operating segments. For the time being, the company's gaming division is the only one generating positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). The company had approximately 725 million mobile game users in the second quarter, 12.7% of which were paying to play. This is a pay-to-play conversion rate that's well above the industry average of closer to 2%.</p>\n<p>But the real lure here is the e-commerce platform Shopee, which is the most downloaded shopping app in Southeastern Asia and is also gaining steam in Brazil. Shopee is primarily targeting emerging market countries and has delivered jaw-dropping growth over the past couple of years. For instance, the $15 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) purchased in the second quarter places Shopee's annual sales run rate 500% higher than the GMV produced in all of 2018.</p>\n<p>Lastly, the company's digital financial services segment can be a hit in underbanked emerging markets. Square may also become one of the most instrumental payment companies in the world.\nFor more than a decade, Square has leaned on its seller ecosystem as its foundational puzzle piece. This segment provides point-of-sale devices, analytics, loans, and other tools to help merchants succeed. In 2012, Square recognized $6.5 billion in gross payment volume (GPV) on its network. This year, the seller ecosystem could top $150 billion in GPV.\nBest of all, this merchant fee-driven segment is seeing a larger percentage of GPV originate from bigger businesses, as defined by annualized GPV. Larger merchants using its payment ecosystem should result in steadily growing gross profit.\nBut the bigger long-term growth driver is peer-to-peer digital payments platform Cash App, which has grown its monthly active user base from 7 million to 36 million in three years, ended Dec. 31, 2020. Cash App allows Square to generate revenue from more channels, including investments, and is bringing in $55 in gross profit per user (as of Q2 2021), compared to a $5 cost to attract each new user.  With the acquisition of buy now, pay later company Afterpay, Square will have its very own closed payment ecosystem, which could really ramp up its growth potential.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nShopify\nThough it's already a top-60 company by market cap, cloud-based e-commerce platform Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) may well be a top-10 company in size by 2040.\nThe core trend backing Shopify's ascent is simple: more and more businesses are shifting their operating presence online. Whether it's stand-alone online retail sales or the ability to appear in third-party marketplaces, Shopify is ready to help businesses of all sizes grow their e-commerce business. For some context, FTI Consulting estimates that online retail market share as a percentage of total retail sales in the U.S. will grow from 18% in 2020 to 33% by 2030.\nFurthermore, the services Shopify provides are high-margin and generate predictable cash flow. While Shopify's addressable market for small businesses sits at $153 billion, according to the company, this figure doesn't account for continued innovation, the regular introduction of new products, or its ability to secure deals with larger businesses that purchase its $2,000 a month Shopify Plus subscription service.\nIf Wall Street's consensus sales estimates prove accurate, sales for the company are on pace to more than quintuple by 2025, with no signs of slowing.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAirbnb\nAnother big-time disruptor with aspirations of becoming one of the largest stocks by 2040 is the stay-and-hosting platform Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB). To do so, Airbnb would need to climb around 100 spots in the market cap rankings over the next 19 years.\nFirst and foremost, it's completely disrupting the traditional hotel operating model. According to Airbnb, over 4 million households worldwide are being used for hosting, and are, in many cases, cheaper, more convenient, and more private than local hotels. Though the pandemic threw a monkey wrench into the works for a couple of quarters, it's worth pointing out that bookings more than quintupled in the three-year period between the end of 2016 and the end of 2019.\nWhat's more, the fastest-growing segment for Airbnb is long-term stays (defined as 28 or more days). As the world becomes more remote in the wake of the pandemic, Airbnb has an opportunity to secure the lion's share of business from these work-from-anywhere individuals.\nAnd don't overlook the Experiences segment, which hires local experts to lead travelers on adventures. Experiences will allow Airbnb to further infiltrate the $9.2 trillion travel and tourism industry.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSalesforce\nWhereas Airbnb has a big hill to climb to become one of the largest stocks by 2040, cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) software provider Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) is closer to that mark than any other company on this list. With a market cap nearing $300 billion, it looks to be well on its way to becoming a foundational tech giant that other businesses envy.\nFor those unfamiliar with CRM software, it's used by consumer-facing businesses to improve customer relationships and grow sales. It can help oversee online marketing campaigns, handle product or service issues, and run predictive sales analyses on an existing client base.\nWhat makes Salesforce special is its utter dominance of the CRM space. According to IDC, it was responsible for 19.5% of global CRM spending in 2020. That's more than the No.'s 2 through 5 in market share on a combined basis. CRM software spending is slated for double-digit annual growth through at least mid-decade, and Salesforce's share of this trend is virtually untouchable.\nSalesforce CEO Marc Benioff has also overseen a number of earnings-accretive and ecosystem-expanding acquisitions, including MuleSoft, Tableau, and the latest, Slack Technologies. Sea sits just inside the top 50, at the moment, with a market cap of nearly $200 billion.\nSea's secret weapon is that it has not one or two, but three rapidly growing operating segments. For the time being, the company's gaming division is the only one generating positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). The company had approximately 725 million mobile game users in the second quarter, 12.7% of which were paying to play. This is a pay-to-play conversion rate that's well above the industry average of closer to 2%.\nBut the real lure here is the e-commerce platform Shopee, which is the most downloaded shopping app in Southeastern Asia and is also gaining steam in Brazil. Shopee is primarily targeting emerging market countries and has delivered jaw-dropping growth over the past couple of years. For instance, the $15 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) purchased in the second quarter places Shopee's annual sales run rate 500% higher than the GMV produced in all of 2018.\nLastly, the company's digital financial services segment can be a hit in underbanked emerging markets. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.</p>\n<p>The reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.</p>\n<p>The government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.</p>\n<p>What should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.</p>\n<p><b>Rising yields</b></p>\n<p>Remember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452%&nbsp;moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.</p>\n<p>“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>That’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.</p>\n<p><b>Fed tapering</b></p>\n<p>Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee&nbsp;(FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.</p>\n<p>“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.</p>\n<p>“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.</p>\n<p>He thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.</p>\n<p>As we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&amp;P 500 SPX,+0.19%,&nbsp;the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04%&nbsp;and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.</p>\n<p><b>How to prepare</b></p>\n<p>When considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.</p>\n<p>The consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.</p>\n<p>Yes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.</p>\n<p>“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”</p>\n<p>Looking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&amp;P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&amp;P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.</p>\n<p><b>Your five-point game plan</b></p>\n<p><b>1. Do not go to “defensives”</b></p>\n<p>When people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.</p>\n<p>“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”</p>\n<p><b>2. Go with companies that benefit from growth</b></p>\n<p>Since rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. This means cyclicals like industrials, basic materials consumer names, small-caps and international stocks. “Slower growth consumer staples and utilities won’t keep up with growth areas of the market,” says Paulsen.</p>\n<p>I first suggested Lindblad Expeditions LIND,+0.17%&nbsp;and Cardlytics CDLX,+4.54%&nbsp;and in my stock letter, Brush Up on Stocks (the link to my site is in the bio, below) in September 2020 and November 2019. I still like and own both even though they are up 48% and 157% — or two to four times the S&amp;P 500. Recent insider buying confirms they are buys and holds around current levels. Plus, both are cyclical names. Cardlytics helps credit card companies understand customer buying patterns for marketing purposes. Lindblad offers specialized cruise adventures to exotic locales. Both benefit from economic growth that powers more consumer spending.</p>\n<p><b>3. Do not get out of stocks</b></p>\n<p>If you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.</p>\n<p>“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”</p>\n<p>Market timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.</p>\n<p><b>4. Do not own bonds</b></p>\n<p>Bond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. So don’t own bonds, whose prices fall when yields rise — unless you simply plan to hold to maturity to collect the income.</p>\n<p><b>5. Go with financials</b></p>\n<p>Strong economies typically make the yield curve more upward sloping, meaning that long-term interest rates on 10-year Treasuries rise a lot faster than short-term interest rates. Since banks borrow at the short end and lend at the long end, steepening yield curves help them.</p>\n<p>The strong economy will also help banks release reserves and lower provisions for loan losses, both of which can boost earnings, points out Yardeni. Both JPMorgan Chase JPM,-0.07%&nbsp;and Bank of America BAC,+0.41%&nbsp;are up over twice as much as the S&amp;P 500 since I suggested them in my stock letter last August. But they still look attractive. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.\nThe reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.\nThe government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.\nWhat should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.\nRising yields\nRemember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452% moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.\n“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.\nThat’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.\nFed tapering\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.\n“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.\n“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.\nHe thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.\nAs we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&P 500 SPX,+0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04% and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.\nHow to prepare\nWhen considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.\nThe consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.\nYes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.\n“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”\nLooking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.\nYour five-point game plan\n1. Do not go to “defensives”\nWhen people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.\n“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”\n2. Go with companies that benefit from growth\nSince rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. This means cyclicals like industrials, basic materials consumer names, small-caps and international stocks. “Slower growth consumer staples and utilities won’t keep up with growth areas of the market,” says Paulsen.\nI first suggested Lindblad Expeditions LIND,+0.17% and Cardlytics CDLX,+4.54% and in my stock letter, Brush Up on Stocks (the link to my site is in the bio, below) in September 2020 and November 2019. I still like and own both even though they are up 48% and 157% — or two to four times the S&P 500. Recent insider buying confirms they are buys and holds around current levels. Plus, both are cyclical names. Cardlytics helps credit card companies understand customer buying patterns for marketing purposes. Lindblad offers specialized cruise adventures to exotic locales. Both benefit from economic growth that powers more consumer spending.\n3. Do not get out of stocks\nIf you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.\n“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”\nMarket timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.\n4. Do not own bonds\nBond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. So don’t own bonds, whose prices fall when yields rise — unless you simply plan to hold to maturity to collect the income.\n5. Go with financials\nStrong economies typically make the yield curve more upward sloping, meaning that long-term interest rates on 10-year Treasuries rise a lot faster than short-term interest rates. Since banks borrow at the short end and lend at the long end, steepening yield curves help them.\nThe strong economy will also help banks release reserves and lower provisions for loan losses, both of which can boost earnings, points out Yardeni. Both JPMorgan Chase JPM,-0.07% and Bank of America BAC,+0.41% are up over twice as much as the S&P 500 since I suggested them in my stock letter last August. But they still look attractive.
