However, if you are going to invest, fundamentals eventually matter. For a short period of time, a stock price can simply go up based on sentiment or technical factors. Sooner or later, however, a company actually needs to earn money or show strong growth to maintain its shareholder value. GameStop, however, is not doing this yet.</p>\n<p>GameStop isn’t expecting to report Q3 earnings until December. However, looking back at its Q2 earnings, they were a big mess. The company lost 85 cents per share, which was a sizable miss versus expectations. Revenues grew 25% year-over-year, which might sound good at first glance. However, it actually isn’t that big of a jump, considering that the stores were largely closed in Q2 of 2020. Economic reopening could have led to a much bigger revenue increase, particularly given the strong video game sales trend.</p>\n<p>Overall, for Q2, the company lost $58 million while generating $1.18 billion of sales. That’s around a negative 5% profit margin. This isn’t a disaster, by any means, but normally investors would value a small loss-making retailer like this at a low valuation ratio. Instead, GME stock is currently at a rather lofty price.</p>\n<p>On a profit basis, GameStop is also exceptionally expensive. Analysts expect the company to continue losing money in 2022. In 2023, analysts see GameStop generating 15 cents per share in operating profit. This would add up to a P/E ratio of around 1,400.</p>\n<p><b>Share Price Gyrations</b></p>\n<p>Clearly, GameStop isn’t rallying based on anything to do with its (poor) fundamentals. Rather, most of the action is due to short-term sentiment swings and technical factors.</p>\n<p>Since this spring, GameStop has traded in a range between $150 and $300 per share. It tests the edges of those ranges occasionally, but it tends to settle back to around $200 per share most of the time. It’s been frustrating for both shareholders and short sellers; both want to see a big move, but instead the stock just hangs out in its narrow area.</p>\n<p>Over time, however, an overvalued stock will tend to drift down toward its fair value if there are no positive catalysts to keep sentiment up. Earnings in December are likely to be bad; analysts don’t see the company making profits until 2023, after all. And the supply chain and logisitics problems may cause GameStop issues this holiday season. We’ve already seen bad earnings from other mall retailers like&nbsp;<b>Gap</b>(NYSE:<b><u>GPS</u></b>) which serve as a warning for the sector as a whole.</p>\n<p>In November, GameStop shares rallied once again. The actual value of GameStop’s existing operating business is minimal. The company was barely surviving prior to the pandemic. And foot traffic to malls has dropped significantly since then; GameStop’s legacy brick and mortar business is not going to be a meaningful profit center for much longer.</p>\n<p>Will GameStop be able to develop a large sustainable online business? We still don’t know. There’s been a lot of rumors and excitement around what could be. Until some tangible signs of actual progress occur, GME stock is a gamble at best. If traders think a stock's price is going lower, they canshort the stock. They borrow shares and sell them, with the intent of buying them back at lower prices.</p>\n<p>This is mostly done by institutional investors, like hedge funds, given the risks and the margin required.</p>\n<p>And there are big risks. Stocks can theoretically go up infinitely. So a&nbsp;trader who is short&nbsp;can face theoretically infinite losses.</p>\n<p>Some stocks attract&nbsp;very high short interest, which can be viewed as the amount of shares sold short as a percentage of float, or how much stock has been issued that is available for trading.</p>\n<p>The problem comes if the stock prices starts to rise quickly. Those that are short the stock will likely receive a margin call. They either have to put more money up to secure their position or close their positions.</p>\n<p>If they choose to — or are forced to — close their position, they are buying the stock to close out their position. This can push the price higher and force other short sellers to do the same. This creates a reinforcing loop of buying and pushing the price higher. This is the short squeeze, as those short the market get \"squeezed\" out.</p>\n<p>Short Squeeze Stocks: GME</p>\n<p>This is definitely part of what was happening in&nbsp;<b>GameStop</b>(GME) stock. In August of 2020, GME stock was trading for around 4.</p>\n<p>Shares steadily climbed higher to close out 2020 just under 20 on the back of some big name investors taking stakes in the company. This attracted the short sellers, notably some big hedge funds. Then, on Jan. 13, the stock jumped to hit a high of almost 40 on huge volume.</p>\n<p>That was surely the start of the short squeeze. That 40 level held for about a week. On Jan. 22, the stock jumped again, trading above 70 on the biggest volume day up to that point.</p>\n<p>The next day the stock hit a high of almost 160 with similar action the next day. Then on Jan. 27 the stock doubled again, trading up to 380. The Jan. 28 high was 483.</p>\n<p>While short squeezes are nothing new, this action is unprecedented. The action is certainly partly stock buying by the Reddit group wallstreetbets.</p>\n<p>And while many are cheering that the little retail traders are beating up the big institutional shorts, it is pretty clear that other institutions are also in on this buying. Stories have popped up about Michael Burry's gains on GME stock and Elon Musk was tweeting about it.</p>\n<p>Hedge Fund Losses</p>\n<p>There are some big losses in this squeeze.</p>\n<p>Two funds in particular have been hard hit. Citron Research and Melvin Capital have reportedly suffered huge losses.</p>\n<p>Melvin is down 30% in 2021 on the back of a GME stock short position. It turned to Steven Cohen of Point72 Capital and Chicago-based Citadel to bail it out.</p>\n<p>The short squeeze is usually something inflicted by one hedge fund on another.</p>\n<p>This is really the first time we have seen such trading instigated by a band of retail traders.</p>\n<p>Options Trading Is Also A Big Factor</p>\n<p>Another piece of this story's plot is the fact that much of the trading in GME and other names like&nbsp;<b>AMC Entertainment</b>(AMC) and&nbsp;<b>BlackBerry</b>(BB) is actually taking place in the&nbsp;options market.</p>\n<p>Bullish call buying instead of buying the stock is attractive here because of the leverage it provides and the fact that the positions are limited risk.</p>\n<p>Calls are contracts that give the right to buy the underlying stock for a given price (strike price) until the expiration date.</p>\n<p>The most that can be lost is the premium paid for the calls.</p>\n<p>Buying calls requires much less capital, so bigger positions can be taken by small traders.</p>\n<p>This actually adds to the short squeeze effect.</p>\n<p>When retail traders buy calls, it is market makers that sell them.</p>\n<p>The market makers don't want the risk of being short calls, so they do something called delta hedging.</p>\n<p>What Is Delta Hedging, And Why It Matters In A Short Squeeze</p>\n<p>Delta hedging calls requires the market makers to buy stock. And because of the nature of calls, when the price of the underlying stock goes up, the market makers have to buy more stock to stay hedged.</p>\n<p>We might call this the call option squeeze.</p>\n<p>The problem is that these moves are not based on any fundamental changes in the stocks.</p>\n<p>Not much has changed for GME stock since it was a $4 stock, and certainly not since it was a $16 stock.</p>\n<p>Brokerage firms are very concerned about the volatility of these moves, as they know they may face losses if customers can't cover positions. They started limiting the positions that can be taken in some of these names.</p>\n<p>That news came on Jan. 28, which saw GameStop stock price range from over 500 to below 115.</p>\n<p>This is a trade you wanted to watch out for. Over that time, the index has gained more than 240%, bolstering the case for investors willing to step in during episodes of weakness.</p>\n<p>Dip buying has already been in evidence. The S&amp;P 500 bounced back over 1% after Monday, when a sharp sell-off saw the S&amp;P 500 end more than 5% below its closing record high, in its biggest drawdown so far in 2021. The buyers included retail investors, who have purchased an average of $1.2 billion in stocks per day so far this week, up from their average, according to Vanda Research.</p>\n<p>Some worry, however, that buying the latest dip may come with more near-term risks than before as investors face a bevy of headwinds, from the looming unwind of the Federal Reserve’s $120 billion a month government bond-buying program to a protracted battle among lawmakers to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.</p>\n<p>Analysts at BofA Global Research on Tuesday cautioned that “the coast appears far from clear” as the Fed prepares to wind down the easy money policies that had helped the market double from last year’s lows as early as August. BofA’s target on the S&amp;P 500 is 4,250, some 2% below Tuesday’s close.</p>\n<p>The risks of a more hawkish Fed also concerned analysts at Morgan Stanley, who on Monday said the S&amp;P 500 could fall as much as 20% if the economy and earnings “cool off” as the Fed tightens.</p>\n<p>Shawn Snyder, head of investment strategy at Citi US Wealth Management, said a nasty fight among U.S. lawmakers to raise the country’s debt ceiling or throw the nation into default is currently the key near-term risk equities face.</p>\n<p>“The buy-the-dip strategy still works but there (are) very specific things that are lingering that need to be cleared first,” Snyder said.</p>\n<p>Additional risks analysts run the gamut from a recent surge in energy prices to worries over the meltdown of heavily indebted Chinese property developer China Evergrande Group. The S&amp;P 500 is up 15.7% so far this year.</p>\n<p>Buying the dip has “certainly worked for people over the last 10 years,” said JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago. However, “at some point things stop working, especially when people do them time after time.”</p>\n<p>One scenario outlined by Morgan Stanley’s strategists sees the S&amp;P 500 falling by about 10% as the Fed tightens monetary policy due to rising inflationary pressures. In a second scenario, the economy and earnings slow as the Fed tightens, leading to a 20% swoon.</p>\n<p>“Bottom line: faster tapering with a greater deceleration in growth implies a greater than 10% correction,” Morgan Stanley analysts said.</p>\n<p>Despite those worries, however, historical evidence shows that a market powered by strong momentum tends to keep rising. The S&amp;P 500 has notched a positive fourth quarter nearly 80% of the time in years during which it has climbed more than 12.5% in the first nine months, according to LPL’s Detrick, delivering a median fourth-quarter gain of 5.2%.</p>\n<p>Seasonal trends also could provide reasons to buy sooner rather than later. While September lived up to its historical reputation of being the weakest month with a 4.8% decline, October is traditionally stronger, with the seventh-highest average gains for the S&amp;P 500 since 1950, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac.</p>\n<p>November ranks second in monthly performance, with the index rising 1.7% on average, and December third, with equities rising 1.5%, according to the almanac.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs is among the banks calling for more gains. Over that time, the index has gained more than 240%, bolstering the case for investors willing to step in during episodes of weakness.</p>\n<p>Dip buying has already been in evidence. The S&amp;P 500 bounced back over 1% after Monday, when a sharp sell-off saw the S&amp;P 500 end more than 5% below its closing record high, in its biggest drawdown so far in 2021. The buyers included retail investors, who have purchased an average of $1.2 billion in stocks per day so far this week, up from their average, according to Vanda Research.</p>\n<p>Some worry, however, that buying the latest dip may come with more near-term risks than before as investors face a bevy of headwinds, from the looming unwind of the Federal Reserve’s $120 billion a month government bond-buying program to a protracted battle among lawmakers to raise the U.S. debt ceiling.</p>\n<p>Analysts at BofA Global Research on Tuesday cautioned that “the coast appears far from clear” as the Fed prepares to wind down the easy money policies that had helped the market double from last year’s lows as early as August. BofA’s target on the S&amp;P 500 is 4,250, some 2% below Tuesday’s close.</p>\n<p>The risks of a more hawkish Fed also concerned analysts at Morgan Stanley, who on Monday said the S&amp;P 500 could fall as much as 20% if the economy and earnings “cool off” as the Fed tightens.</p>\n<p>Shawn Snyder, head of investment strategy at Citi US Wealth Management, said a nasty fight among U.S. lawmakers to raise the country’s debt ceiling or throw the nation into default is currently the key near-term risk equities face.</p>\n<p>“The buy-the-dip strategy still works but there (are) very specific things that are lingering that need to be cleared first,” Snyder said.</p>\n<p>Additional risks analysts run the gamut from a recent surge in energy prices to worries over the meltdown of heavily indebted Chinese property developer China Evergrande Group. The S&amp;P 500 is up 15.7% so far this year.</p>\n<p>Buying the dip has “certainly worked for people over the last 10 years,” said JJ Kinahan, chief market strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago. However, “at some point things stop working, especially when people do them time after time.”</p>\n<p>One scenario outlined by Morgan Stanley’s strategists sees the S&amp;P 500 falling by about 10% as the Fed tightens monetary policy due to rising inflationary pressures. In a second scenario, the economy and earnings slow as the Fed tightens, leading to a 20% swoon.</p>\n<p>“Bottom line: faster tapering with a greater deceleration in growth implies a greater than 10% correction,” Morgan Stanley analysts said.</p>\n<p>Despite those worries, however, historical evidence shows that a market powered by strong momentum tends to keep rising. The S&amp;P 500 has notched a positive fourth quarter nearly 80% of the time in years during which it has climbed more than 12.5% in the first nine months, according to LPL’s Detrick, delivering a median fourth-quarter gain of 5.2%.</p>\n<p>Seasonal trends also could provide reasons to buy sooner rather than later. Facebook and Apple saw modest gains in early trading, while Netflix jumped more than 2%.</p>\n<p>Stocks also got a boost as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said late Wednesday that the chamber had reached a deal to avoid a government shutdown this week. Schumer said&nbsp;he would schedule a vote on Thursday&nbsp;for the stopgap measure that would keep the government running into early December. The deal would still need to pass the House.</p>\n<p>For the month, the Dow is down 2.7%, the S&amp;P 500 is off by 3.6% and the Nasdaq Composite has shed 4.9%. September has lived up to its losing reputation with the market beset by fears of a China property crisis, rising inflation and a late interest rate surge sparked by the Federal Reserve signaling it would start removing stimulus soon.</p>\n<p>\"We wouldn't get caught up in any end-of-quarter machinations today and continue to advise fading rallies (especially in tech) as the coming weeks will stay rocky,\" wrote Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge.</p>\n<p>The 10-year Treasury yield fell 3 basis points to 1.52% on Thursday (1 basis point equals 0.01%). The rate was at 1.30% to end August before surging to end this month.</p>\n<p>September’s losses have led to a middling third quarter for the market. For the 3-month period, the Dow is slightly in the red, while the Nasdaq Composite is just about flat. The S&amp;P 500 is up 1.4%. The S&amp;P 500 is still up 16% on the year.</p>\n<p>October has a reputation for some violent sell-offs but overall is typically the start of a better seasonal performance for stocks. The S&amp;P 500 averages a 0.8% gain for the month, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac.</p>\n<p>“September lived up to its reputation and dented stock portfolio returns, but not too badly,” wrote Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research. “There has been a lot of concern that higher wages, higher energy prices, and higher transportation costs will weigh on earnings for the remainder of this year and into 2022. It’s certainly something we’ll be tracking. But so far, analysts remain relatively sanguine.”</p>\n<p>Concerns about inflation and supply chain issues continued to hamper stocks.Shares of Bed Bath &amp; Beyond fell more than 28%&nbsp;in morning&nbsp; trading after the company said those issues hurt the company’s second quarter results, and the news also weighed on fellow retail stocks.</p>\n<p>Fed Chair Jerome Powell will testify to the House Financial Services Committee at 10 a.m. ET Thursday alongside Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Powell&nbsp;told a European Central Bank panel on Wednesday&nbsp;that he was frustrated by persistent inflation.</p>\n<p>“It’s also frustrating to see the bottlenecks and supply chain problems not getting better — in fact at the margins apparently getting a little bit worse,” Powell said. “We see that continuing into next year probably, and holding up inflation longer than we had thought.”</p>\n<p>On the data front,initial jobless claims&nbsp;for the prior week came in at 362,000. Economists are expecting a print of 335,000, according to Dow Jones.</p>\n<p>The Dow and S&amp;P 500 inched higher during regular trading Wednesday. The 30-stock Dow advanced about 90 points for its fifth positive session in the last six, while the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.16%, breaking a 2-day losing streak.</p>\n<p>The Nasdaq Composite, meanwhile, declined 0.24% for its fourth straight negative session. The technology sector declined again on Wednesday and is now down 4% for the week, making it the worst-performing S&amp;P group.</p>\n<p>The tech decline came as the 10-year Treasury yield hit a high of 1.56% on Wednesday, after rising to 1.567% on Tuesday. Chances are Wall Street has a favorable view of the publicly traded company you're looking to add to your portfolio.</p>\n<p>According to data from CNBC, over 90% of all <b>S&amp;P 500</b> stock ratings from Wall Street analysts were the equivalent of \"buy\" or \"hold\" between 1997 and 2017. With the exception of short periods in 2002-2003 and 2008-2009, sell ratings have consistently accounted for only 1% to 6% of all ratings for S&amp;P 500 companies this century.</p>\n<p>One reason for this \"buy bias\" is due to the U.S. and global economy growing over time. Historically, the stock market moves higher over the long run, too. Wall Street analysts might simply be playing the favorable odds that higher-quality businesses will increase in value over time.</p>\n<p>Additionally, <i>The Wall Street Journal</i> noted some years back that Wall Street analysts are hesitant to issue sell ratings so as not to burn bridges for their clients or themselves with the companies they cover. No matter the reasoning, sell ratings are rare on Wall Street.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fb1fd3c71278c123e5dd0404a4dbb43c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"525\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>But don't tell that to shareholders of the following three ultra-popular stocks. These are three of the 16 most-held stocks on the <b>Robinhood</b> (NASDAQ:HOOD) platform, and not one of them has a single buy rating from a Wall Street analyst.</p>\n<h2>Aurora Cannabis</h2>\n<p>One of the biggest buzzkills, according to Wall Street, is Canadian marijuana stock <b>Aurora Cannabis</b> (NASDAQ:ACB). Aurora, which at one time was the most-held stock on Robinhood, is being covered by 13 Wall Street institutions, seven of which rate the company the equivalent of a hold and six of which believe it's a sell.</p>\n<p>Though Aurora Cannabis does foot the blame for a lot of this negativity, some of its issues can be traced to Canadian federal and provincial regulators failing the pot industry. For example, Ontario's lottery system to assign retail licenses through 2019 was terrible and resulted in only a few dozen dispensaries opening. Canadian pot stocks are still trying to recover from supply chain bottlenecks in the country's most populous province.</p>\n<p>But as I mentioned, Aurora Cannabis isn't without fault. The company expanded its production capacity far beyond what was needed. At one time, it held 15 production facilities that could have yielded more than 600,000 kilos of annual cannabis output if fully operational. Management has since closed five of these smaller facilities, sold a 1-million-square-foot greenhouse that wasn't retrofitted for cannabis production, and halted construction on two of the company's largest projects.</p>\n<p>Yet, even with this aggressive cost-cutting, Aurora Cannabis is still a long way from generating positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). With the company continuing to burn cash and the previous management team grossly overpaying for about a dozen acquisitions, it's regularly had to sell its common stock to raise capital to pay its bills and fund buyouts.</p>\n<p>Taking into account a reverse split enacted last year to stave off delisting, Aurora's share count has ballooned from about 1.3 million shares in June 2014 to 198 million shares, as of mid-May. That sort of dilution is precisely why the company's shares are down nearly 95% since March 2019.</p>\n<p>The salt in the wound is that Canada's legal weed sales have been hitting monthly records, all while Aurora's recreational pot revenue was more than halved in its fiscal third quarter.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bc514068ded899a817770f684369db36\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Sundial Growers</h2>\n<p>Yet another Canadian pot stock in the no-buy zone for Wall Street is small-cap <b>Sundial Growers</b> (NASDAQ:SNDL). Even though it's the fourth most-held stock on Robinhood, four of the six analysts covering the company rate it a sell.</p>\n<p>Despite sitting on a boatload of cash, cash equivalents, and long-term investments (about $948 million), Sundial Growers has three factors working against it.</p>\n<p>To begin with, Sundial's approach to raising capital has destroyed shareholder value. Initially, it looked as if management would sell enough common stock to simply pay off the company's outstanding debt. But in a nine-month stretch between Oct. 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, Sundial's executives have unrelentingly issued stock to raise additional capital.</p>\n<p>The end result is the issuance of roughly 1.5 billion shares of stock. With 2 billion shares now outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever generating meaningful earnings per share, and it'll likely struggle to remain listed on the <b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;exchange without a substantial reverse split.</p>\n<p>Second, Sundial's management team hasn't laid out a concrete plan for its capital. While it did undertake a cash-and-stock deal to acquire <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/INSHF\">Inner Spirit Holdings</a> in July, and it's committed roughly $425 million to its joint venture with SAF Group, known as SunStream Bancorp, to invest in cannabis industry opportunities, the company has continued to raise cash with no stated purpose.</p>\n<p>Third, Sundial has shifted its operating model away from wholesale cannabis to take advantage of the higher margins associated with the retail side of the equation. Unfortunately, having to start from scratch has led to significant year-over-year sales declines at a time when legal weed sales are rapidly growing.</p>\n<p>In March I more or less referred to Sundial as the worst cannabis stock money could buy. That descriptor still holds true today.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1c6cb4d9fcdf85f542f333fc71a2dd58\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>AMC Entertainment</h2>\n<p>But the most popular stock of all that's getting absolutely no love from Wall Street analysts and investment banks is movie theater chain <b>AMC Entertainment</b> (NYSE:AMC). The third most-held stock on Robinhood has nine analysts covering the company. Five of them have it rated a sell, with four others chiming in with a hold rating.</p>\n<p>This rating distribution isn't a surprise given that Wall Street's consensus price target for AMC is $5.44. Shares of the company would need to fall 86% from where they closed last week to reach this consensus target.</p>\n<p>The reason AMC's share price has rocketed higher in 2021 primarily has to do with retail investors piling into the stock and betting on a short squeeze -- i.e., a very short-term event whereby pessimists (short-sellers) run for the exit and buy shares to cover their positions. The issue for these optimists is that none of the data surrounding AMC is working in their favor.</p>\n<p>For one, short squeezes typically require certain conditions be met, which simply aren't there at the moment. While the company's 18.8% short interest at the end of August is higher than most stocks, its large daily trading volume means it would take less than a day for all 95.94 million short shares to be covered. The liquidity of AMC's stock means short-sellers have no fear of being trapped in their position.</p>\n<p>Fundamentally, the movie theater industry has been in a nearly two-decade decline. Tickets sold and inflation-adjusted gross at the box office have fallen 22% between 2002 and 2019, the last full year before the pandemic. Streaming offerings and substantially reduced film exclusivity (30 to 45 days now, compared to 75 to 90 days prior to the pandemic) bode poorly for the industry's future.</p>\n<p>And then there's AMC's operating performance and liability-riddled balance sheet. Despite a record $2.023 billion in liquidity ($1.81 billion in cash), AMC burned through $576.5 million in cash in the first six months of 2021. Its lease liabilities are soaring, it owes $420 million in deferred rent, and it's lugging around nearly $5.5 billion in debt that it likely can't pay.</p>\n<p>More than $1 billion in aggregate debt due in 2026 and 2027 is also valued at 70% to 74% of face value. Chances are Wall Street has a favorable view of the publicly traded company you're looking to add to your portfolio.\nAccording to data from CNBC, over 90% of all S&P 500 stock ratings from Wall Street analysts were the equivalent of \"buy\" or \"hold\" between 1997 and 2017. With the exception of short periods in 2002-2003 and 2008-2009, sell ratings have consistently accounted for only 1% to 6% of all ratings for S&P 500 companies this century.\nOne reason for this \"buy bias\" is due to the U.S. and global economy growing over time. Historically, the stock market moves higher over the long run, too. Wall Street analysts might simply be playing the favorable odds that higher-quality businesses will increase in value over time.\nAdditionally, The Wall Street Journal noted some years back that Wall Street analysts are hesitant to issue sell ratings so as not to burn bridges for their clients or themselves with the companies they cover. No matter the reasoning, sell ratings are rare on Wall Street.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nBut don't tell that to shareholders of the following three ultra-popular stocks. These are three of the 16 most-held stocks on the Robinhood (NASDAQ:HOOD) platform, and not one of them has a single buy rating from a Wall Street analyst.\nAurora Cannabis\nOne of the biggest buzzkills, according to Wall Street, is Canadian marijuana stock Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQ:ACB). Aurora, which at one time was the most-held stock on Robinhood, is being covered by 13 Wall Street institutions, seven of which rate the company the equivalent of a hold and six of which believe it's a sell.\nThough Aurora Cannabis does foot the blame for a lot of this negativity, some of its issues can be traced to Canadian federal and provincial regulators failing the pot industry. For example, Ontario's lottery system to assign retail licenses through 2019 was terrible and resulted in only a few dozen dispensaries opening. Canadian pot stocks are still trying to recover from supply chain bottlenecks in the country's most populous province.\nBut as I mentioned, Aurora Cannabis isn't without fault. The company expanded its production capacity far beyond what was needed. At one time, it held 15 production facilities that could have yielded more than 600,000 kilos of annual cannabis output if fully operational. Management has since closed five of these smaller facilities, sold a 1-million-square-foot greenhouse that wasn't retrofitted for cannabis production, and halted construction on two of the company's largest projects.\nYet, even with this aggressive cost-cutting, Aurora Cannabis is still a long way from generating positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). With the company continuing to burn cash and the previous management team grossly overpaying for about a dozen acquisitions, it's regularly had to sell its common stock to raise capital to pay its bills and fund buyouts.\nTaking into account a reverse split enacted last year to stave off delisting, Aurora's share count has ballooned from about 1.3 million shares in June 2014 to 198 million shares, as of mid-May. That sort of dilution is precisely why the company's shares are down nearly 95% since March 2019.\nThe salt in the wound is that Canada's legal weed sales have been hitting monthly records, all while Aurora's recreational pot revenue was more than halved in its fiscal third quarter.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSundial Growers\nYet another Canadian pot stock in the no-buy zone for Wall Street is small-cap Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL). Even though it's the fourth most-held stock on Robinhood, four of the six analysts covering the company rate it a sell.\nDespite sitting on a boatload of cash, cash equivalents, and long-term investments (about $948 million), Sundial Growers has three factors working against it.\nTo begin with, Sundial's approach to raising capital has destroyed shareholder value. Initially, it looked as if management would sell enough common stock to simply pay off the company's outstanding debt. But in a nine-month stretch between Oct. 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, Sundial's executives have unrelentingly issued stock to raise additional capital.\nThe end result is the issuance of roughly 1.5 billion shares of stock. With 2 billion shares now outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever generating meaningful earnings per share, and it'll likely struggle to remain listed on the Nasdaq exchange without a substantial reverse split.\nSecond, Sundial's management team hasn't laid out a concrete plan for its capital. While it did undertake a cash-and-stock deal to acquire Inner Spirit Holdings in July, and it's committed roughly $425 million to its joint venture with SAF Group, known as SunStream Bancorp, to invest in cannabis industry opportunities, the company has continued to raise cash with no stated purpose.\nThird, Sundial has shifted its operating model away from wholesale cannabis to take advantage of the higher margins associated with the retail side of the equation. Unfortunately, having to start from scratch has led to significant year-over-year sales declines at a time when legal weed sales are rapidly growing.\nIn March I more or less referred to Sundial as the worst cannabis stock money could buy. That descriptor still holds true today.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAMC Entertainment\nBut the most popular stock of all that's getting absolutely no love from Wall Street analysts and investment banks is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC). The third most-held stock on Robinhood has nine analysts covering the company. Five of them have it rated a sell, with four others chiming in with a hold rating.\nThis rating distribution isn't a surprise given that Wall Street's consensus price target for AMC is $5.44. Shares of the company would need to fall 86% from where they closed last week to reach this consensus target.\nThe reason AMC's share price has rocketed higher in 2021 primarily has to do with retail investors piling into the stock and betting on a short squeeze -- i.e., a very short-term event whereby pessimists (short-sellers) run for the exit and buy shares to cover their positions. The issue for these optimists is that none of the data surrounding AMC is working in their favor.\nFor one, short squeezes typically require certain conditions be met, which simply aren't there at the moment. While the company's 18.8% short interest at the end of August is higher than most stocks, its large daily trading volume means it would take less than a day for all 95.94 million short shares to be covered. The liquidity of AMC's stock means short-sellers have no fear of being trapped in their position.\nFundamentally, the movie theater industry has been in a nearly two-decade decline. Tickets sold and inflation-adjusted gross at the box office have fallen 22% between 2002 and 2019, the last full year before the pandemic. Streaming offerings and substantially reduced film exclusivity (30 to 45 days now, compared to 75 to 90 days prior to the pandemic) bode poorly for the industry's future.\nAnd then there's AMC's operating performance and liability-riddled balance sheet. Despite a record $2.023 billion in liquidity ($1.81 billion in cash), AMC burned through $576.5 million in cash in the first six months of 2021. Its lease liabilities are soaring, it owes $420 million in deferred rent, and it's lugging around nearly $5.5 billion in debt that it likely can't pay.\nMore than $1 billion in aggregate debt due in 2026 and 2027 is also valued at 70% to 74% of face value.
