These are high-growth software-as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud stocks that I currently hold in my $1.6 million long-term investing portfolio.</p>\n<p>If you aren't familiar with the terminology, SaaS is simply a component of cloud computing. SaaS refers to software hosted outside of your organization and offered as a subscription-based service. Overall, SaaS generally offers businesses lower total cost of ownership. The latest software updates and enhancements are generally done for you as the client, allowing businesses to have the latest and greatest without additional effort or overhead. Additionally, SaaS enables businesses to shift capital expenses to operating expenses, allowing them to stretch budgets from an accounting perspective.</p>\n<p>Cloud computing refers to servers that are connected through the internet, as well as the software, data centers, and databases that create an online network. Leveraging \"the cloud\" allows users and businesses to consume and analyze data without having to manage databases or software on their own physical, on-premises servers and machines.</p>\n<p>Digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, machine learning, centralized analytics, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), connected TV (CTV), streaming, work from anywhere, the gig economy, and other secular growth trends fuel SaaS and cloud infrastructure. But what are the best stocks to buy in order to ride these waves and boost your portfolio?</p>\n<p>I'll provide 10 total stocks over two articles and videos. Today, I will cover stocks 1 through 10.</p>\n<p>#10.<b>salesforce.com</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:CRM) is the leader in customer relationship management (CRM). <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM\">Salesforce</a> is a SaaS provider that enables organizations to integrate marketing, sales, service, e-commerce, and IT into a single customer view. Salesforce is acquiring<b>Slack</b> (NYSE:WORK), which has caused volatility in the stock. The leadership team has proven to shareholders many times that they can successfully acquire businesses and add value. I firmly believe that this acquisition will add tremendous value to Salesforce customers. The company plans to build Slack into its Service Cloud products, which will increase employee productivity from anywhere.</p>\n<p>#9.<b>DocuSign</b>(NASDAQ:DOCU) offers more than most people realize. Its business consists of four primary pillars -- manage, prepare, sign, and act -- which collectively are called the DocuSign Agreement Cloud. The company continues to expand offerings, and its recent earnings results prove it. For Q1 FY22, revenues grew 58% year over year to $469 million. Its billings also grew 54% year over year to $527 million with a 125% net dollar retention rate. The below video goes into more detail, breaking down the pillars and solutions.</p>\n<p>#8.<b>Twilio</b> (NYSE:TWLO) is often misunderstood. Sure, it helps companies like Uber and DoorDash connect customers to businesses, but what else does it do? Here is a list of solutions Twilio can offer:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Messaging:</b> You can send and receive SMS, MMS, and OTT messages globally (to and from over 180 countries) and in a scalable manner. For example, Twilio can be used to created automated replies to customers and route important requests to humans for additional interaction.</li>\n <li><b>Customer engagement:</b>Contact centers can leverage Twilio for customer engagement channels, and the tools can be quite complex. For example, Twilio offers AI-powered tools for customer self-service, automatic text notifications, callbacks, etc.</li>\n <li><b>Marketing:</b>Campaigns can use Twilio to send specific, customizable messages with the ability to track data such as click-through rates.</li>\n <li><b>Business email services:</b> Twilio can send and receive emails. Twilio SendGrid Email API allows businesses to create flexible, scalable, and engaging campaigns.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>#7<b>The Trade Desk</b> (NASDAQ:TTD) focuses on the ad-tech space, and it has a tremendous total addressable market (TAM) when you consider the possibilities in CTV. CTV means \"connected TV,\" which is essentially any television connected to the internet. Think<b>Roku</b> (NASDAQ:ROKU), YouTube, part of<b>Alphabet</b> (NASDAQ:GOOGL),<b>Amazon</b> Prime (NASDAQ:AMZN),<b>Disney</b>'s Disney+&nbsp;(NYSE:DIS), and others. Smart TVs are changing the internet, and buying The Trade Desk is the best way to play this space, in my opinion. The company allows its clients to buy advertisements or run global marketing campaigns in areas such as CTV, display ads, and even social media. These are massive secular growth trends, and The Trade Desk can help your portfolio capture some of this growth.</p>\n<p>#6.<b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a> Video</b> (NASDAQ:ZM) is the epitome of a work-from-home stock, but can it be a large part of the work-from-anywhere movement that is here to stay? The answer, in my opinion, is yes. Zoom is now a verb, and recently Charlie Munger told CNBC that he's \"in love with Zoom\" and thinks it's \"here to stay.\" I agree with him, and the below video shares more details as to why.</p>\n<p>In case you missed the last article, I'll provide some background. But what are the best stocks to buy in order to ride these waves and boost your portfolio?&nbsp;</p>\n<p>#5. <b>Zscaler</b> (NASDAQ:ZS) offers customers a security stack as a cloud service, which offers lower cost and complexity than \"old-school\" traditional gateway methods. Zscaler's global infrastructure brings internet gateways closer to users all around the world, creating a faster and more streamlined experience. The company enables work-from-anywhere cloud security in a highly scalable fashion.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>#4. <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DDOG\">Datadog</a></b> (NASDAQ:DDOG) provides monitoring and analytics tools that give IT teams insights from anywhere and at any time. Datadog, like Zscaler, is very scalable. In fact, most cloud-native providers are highly scalable, which is part of the reason they rank high on the list. Datadog brings information together from across an entire organization into a simple dashboard. Companies that leverage Datadog enjoy benefits such as improved user experience, faster resolutions to interruptions, and overall better business decisions.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Datadog has continuously improved its product suite as well as its partnership network. In fact, Datadog recently announced a new partnership with <b>Microsoft</b> (NASDAQ:DDOG) Azure, which allows streamlined experiences for configuration, purchasing, and even managing Datadog inside the Azure portal. Additionally, on July 1 Datadog announced a partnership with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CRM\">Salesforce</a> to provide real-time monitoring and threat detection across the <b>Salesforce</b> (NASDAQ:DDOG)&nbsp;platform.</p>\n<p>From a product perspective, here are the highlights:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Application performance monitoring (APM) </b>provides visibility into application functionality and health.&nbsp;</li>\n <li><b>Infrastructure monitoring </b>allows businesses to monitor IT infrastructure.</li>\n <li><b>Log management </b>provides visualization and data for any performance problems.</li>\n <li><b>User experience monitoring </b>includes both synthetics and real user monitoring (RUM).</li>\n <li><b>Network performance monitoring </b>allows insights and analysis into network traffic flow from both hybrid and cloud environments.</li>\n <li><b>Incident management and continuous profiler </b>improves workflows.&nbsp;</li>\n <li><b>Security monitoring </b>provides threat detection.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>#3. <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNOW\">Snowflake</a></b> (NYSE:SNOW) offers what it calls a \"data warehouse-as-a-service\" (DaaS), a cloud-based data storage and analytics solution. Interestingly, Snowflake is not a SaaS company since its revenues are over 90% consumption based. Snowflake reduces cost and improves agility. Its data platform is unique in that it is not built on an existing big data platform.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>As you may have heard around the time of the IPO, Snowflake is backed by Warren Buffett's <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b> (NYSE:BRK.A). Snowflake's clients include <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL), <b>Nike</b> (NYSE:NKE), <b>Mastercard</b> (NYSE:MA), and many others. Snowflake is all about big data, and it deserves a top spot on the list.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>#2. <b>Cloudflare</b>'s (NYSE:NET) mission is to help \"build a better internet.\" Cloudflare is actually a network. In fact, it's <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the larger networks on the planet. Cloudflare enables a faster and more secure internet for anyone with an internet presence. Cloudflare has data centers across the globe, and it boasts an astonishing 25 million internet properties, a number that grows daily. To date, Cloudflare handles over 17 percent of the Fortune 1000 internet requests, and the company handles 25 million HTTP requests every second on average. Cloudflare is all about the future of the internet, and it belongs in my portfolio as a long-term investment.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>#1 <b>Crowdstrike</b> (NASDAQ:CRWD) is the leader in endpoint security. Crowdstrike's Falcon platform stops breaches through both prevention and response, a process known as endpoint detection and response (EDR). It uses agent-based sensors that can be installed on Mac, Linux, and Windows. Crowdstrike relies on a cloud-hosted SaaS platform that manages data and prevents, detects, and responds to threats. Both malware and non-malware attacks are covered via Crowdstrike's cloud-delivered technologies in a lightweight solution.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Cyberattacks continue to be a major threat, and the total addressable market for cybersecurity is enormous. Crowdstrike has been a monster since its IPO in 2019, growing into a $60 billion market cap company. The leadership team has proven to shareholders many times that they can successfully acquire businesses and add value. I firmly believe that this acquisition will add tremendous value to Salesforce customers. The company plans to build Slack into its Service Cloud products, which will increase employee productivity from anywhere.\n#9.DocuSign(NASDAQ:DOCU) offers more than most people realize. Its business consists of four primary pillars -- manage, prepare, sign, and act -- which collectively are called the DocuSign Agreement Cloud. The company continues to expand offerings, and its recent earnings results prove it. For Q1 FY22, revenues grew 58% year over year to $469 million. Its billings also grew 54% year over year to $527 million with a 125% net dollar retention rate. Sure, it helps companies like Uber and DoorDash connect customers to businesses, but what else does it do? Here is a list of solutions Twilio can offer:\n\nMessaging: You can send and receive SMS, MMS, and OTT messages globally (to and from over 180 countries) and in a scalable manner. For example, Twilio can be used to created automated replies to customers and route important requests to humans for additional interaction.\nCustomer engagement:Contact centers can leverage Twilio for customer engagement channels, and the tools can be quite complex. For example, Twilio offers AI-powered tools for customer self-service, automatic text notifications, callbacks, etc.\nMarketing:Campaigns can use Twilio to send specific, customizable messages with the ability to track data such as click-through rates.\nBusiness email services: Twilio can send and receive emails. Twilio SendGrid Email API allows businesses to create flexible, scalable, and engaging campaigns.\n\n#7The Trade Desk (NASDAQ:TTD) focuses on the ad-tech space, and it has a tremendous total addressable market (TAM) when you consider the possibilities in CTV. ThinkRoku (NASDAQ:ROKU), YouTube, part ofAlphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL),Amazon Prime (NASDAQ:AMZN),Disney's Disney+ (NYSE:DIS), and others. Smart TVs are changing the internet, and buying The Trade Desk is the best way to play this space, in my opinion. The company allows its clients to buy advertisements or run global marketing campaigns in areas such as CTV, display ads, and even social media. In fact, most cloud-native providers are highly scalable, which is part of the reason they rank high on the list. Datadog brings information together from across an entire organization into a simple dashboard. Companies that leverage Datadog enjoy benefits such as improved user experience, faster resolutions to interruptions, and overall better business decisions. \nDatadog has continuously improved its product suite as well as its partnership network. In fact, Datadog recently announced a new partnership with Microsoft (NASDAQ:DDOG) Azure, which allows streamlined experiences for configuration, purchasing, and even managing Datadog inside the Azure portal. Additionally, on July 1 Datadog announced a partnership with Salesforce to provide real-time monitoring and threat detection across the Salesforce (NASDAQ:DDOG) platform.\nFrom a product perspective, here are the highlights:\n\nApplication performance monitoring (APM) provides visibility into application functionality and health. \nInfrastructure monitoring allows businesses to monitor IT infrastructure.\nLog management provides visualization and data for any performance problems.\nUser experience monitoring includes both synthetics and real user monitoring (RUM).\nNetwork performance monitoring allows insights and analysis into network traffic flow from both hybrid and cloud environments.\nIncident management and continuous profiler improves workflows. \nSecurity monitoring provides threat detection.\n\n#3. Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW) offers what it calls a \"data warehouse-as-a-service\" (DaaS), a cloud-based data storage and analytics solution. Interestingly, Snowflake is not a SaaS company since its revenues are over 90% consumption based. Snowflake reduces cost and improves agility. Its data platform is unique in that it is not built on an existing big data platform. \nAs you may have heard around the time of the IPO, Snowflake is backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A). Snowflake's clients include Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Nike (NYSE:NKE), Mastercard (NYSE:MA), and many others. Snowflake is all about big data, and it deserves a top spot on the list. \n#2. Cloudflare's (NYSE:NET) mission is to help \"build a better internet.\" Cloudflare is actually a network. In fact, it's one of the larger networks on the planet. Cloudflare enables a faster and more secure internet for anyone with an internet presence. Cloudflare has data centers across the globe, and it boasts an astonishing 25 million internet properties, a number that grows daily. To date, Cloudflare handles over 17 percent of the Fortune 1000 internet requests, and the company handles 25 million HTTP requests every second on average. Cloudflare is all about the future of the internet, and it belongs in my portfolio as a long-term investment. \n#1 Crowdstrike (NASDAQ:CRWD) is the leader in endpoint security. Crowdstrike's Falcon platform stops breaches through both prevention and response, a process known as endpoint detection and response (EDR). It uses agent-based sensors that can be installed on Mac, Linux, and Windows. Crowdstrike relies on a cloud-hosted SaaS platform that manages data and prevents, detects, and responds to threats. Both malware and non-malware attacks are covered via Crowdstrike's cloud-delivered technologies in a lightweight solution. \nCyberattacks continue to be a major threat, and the total addressable market for cybersecurity is enormous. Crowdstrike has been a monster since its IPO in 2019, growing into a $60 billion market cap company. Coinbase Global is the leading cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., allowing enthusiasts to buy and sell a wide range of popular digital currencies. The company makes the majority of its revenue from the transaction fees it charges for each sale.</p>\n<p>The platform has more than 56 million individual users, 7,000 institutions, and 115,000 partners in over 100 countries. Its growing user base gives the company an unmatched ecosystem that has something for everyone, from the beginning cryptocurrency enthusiast to the more experienced buyer.</p>\n<p>2020 was a breakout year for Coinbase, so it isn't surprising that it caught Wood's attention. Coinbase reported that revenue grew 139% year over year to $1.14 billion. At the same time, profits turned positive with net income of $322 million, pivoting from a loss of $30 million in 2019. As a result, the company's adjusted EBITDA surged more than 2,000% to $527 million.</p>\n<p>Preliminary results show that growth accelerated during the first quarter of this year. Revenue surged to $1.8 billion, a ninefold increase from $191 million in the prior-year quarter. For context, revenue tripled compared to the fourth quarter, while exceeding Coinbase's revenue for all of last year. Wood has even gone so far as to say that Bitcoin's price could eventually top $500,000 -- nine times its current price, which is around $55,000 at this writing.</p>\n<p>A quick look at ARK's funds shows that Wood continues to bet big on the potential for cryptocurrency and blockchain. ARK Next Generation Internet holds more than 5% of its $6.9 billion in funds under management in <b>Grayscale Bitcoin Trust</b>&nbsp;-- the first publicly traded security investing solely in Bitcoin.</p>\n<p>That's not all. <b>Square</b> is the No. 1, 2, or 3 holding of three ARK funds and was among the first to offer users more widespread cryptocurrency accessibility. The point-of-sale and digital payments provider first tested buying and selling Bitcoin on its platform in late 2017,&nbsp;before expanding access to all users in early 2018.&nbsp;Rival <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</b>&nbsp;also debuted a service late last year that enables users to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is still in its infancy</h2>\n<p>While it may seem like cryptocurrency is finally entering the mainstream, it's actually still early days for the digital payment method. Hester Peirce, a commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, says cryptocurrency is still in its infancy, but interest is growing.</p>\n<p>\"We're seeing more interest coming from institutional quarters than we have in the past,\" Peirce said during a live-stream financial conference. \"As people are more comfortable working in a virtual world in every industry now, I think people are likely to turn more interest to the crypto space. And as people are looking to diversify their portfolios, I think people are also likely to look more to the crypto space.\"</p>\n<p>A recent study of 30,000 Americans found that roughly 57% say they understand cryptocurrency, about 14% say they are currently invested in crypto and another 15% are planning to invest, according to a nationwide poll conducted by Piplsay Research.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 43% of respondents said they either didn't understand or hadn't even heard of cryptocurrencies. This shows that cryptocurrency has a long way to go before it reaches maturity, with plenty of growth potential.</p>\n<h2>A bit of context</h2>\n<p>It's important to put Wood's purchase of Coinbase Global into context. But when we take a closer look, the price might be justified, as Palantir has a compelling ultra-long-term growth outlook due to a strong position in an absolute growth market. Despite a seemingly very high valuation, Palantir's shares could be a solid long-term investment.</p><p><b>Palantir Is Not A Typical Stock I Like</b></p><p>In general, I am mostly focused on dividend-paying stocks that trade at reasonable or cheap valuations, with some \"growth at a reasonable price\" (GARP) added in. Stocks trading at 100 times forward earnings, or even higher than that, are not at all typical of what I like to write about, and what I personally invest in. I have been quite critical of many stocks that trade at what I believe are too-high valuations. Nevertheless, I see Palantir as a stock that has a lot of potential in the long run, and that seems worthy of consideration, despite a seemingly very high valuation.</p><p>The reasoning for why I like Palantir, despite it trading at a quite high valuation, rests on three main pillars:</p><p><b>1. Palantir is active in an absolute growth market that will grow for decades</b></p><p>Big data, data analysis, and artificial intelligence are not short-term trends that will play out in a couple of years, but rather megatrends that will most likely become ever more important. 20 years from now, 30 years from now, and likely even farther in the future, big data and artificial intelligence will still be growth markets.</p><p><b>2. Palantir has a very clear industry leadership position</b></p><p>Many hyped-up growth companies are active in a highly fought-over market, oftentimes there is no clear, large moat for first-movers and current market leaders. I believe that in Palantir's case, that is not true. The company has developed a wide range of products and offerings for customers that are very unique, and where competition is not looking like a major concern. On top of that, Palantir has established very strong connections with government agencies and the military, which will be hard to replicate for eventual competitors. This does, I believe, result in a high likelihood that Palantir will not only be the leading player in the near term, but that it will retain this position for a long time. I personally am not so sure about the future leadership position of other current hyped-up leaders, including Tesla (TSLA) in EVs, Beyond Meat (BYND) in plant-based meat alternatives, etc.</p><p><b>3. The industry Palantir is active in has great characteristics</b></p><p>Big data and artificial intelligence are not only absolute growth markets, they also, as part of the software/service tech industry, offer a range of highly compelling characteristics. First, the software industry has, on average, very high gross and operating margins. This is, at least partially, the result of relatively low proportional costs, as there is no expensive manufacturing infrastructure needed.High gross margins&nbsp;are one of the common traits shared by companies that are able to deliver strong long-term share price gains.</p><p>The software industry is also capital extensive, which means that free cash flows, on average, are relatively high. There is no need to build out a lot of expensive infrastructure such as manufacturing plants, which translates into attractive free cash generation that can be used for tuck-in acquisitions, debt reduction, etc.</p><p>Third, the software industry overall is not cyclical. As software is an essential part of our daily lives and of doing business, customers don't scale back their use of software during a recession or any other type of crisis. In Palantir's case, where government agencies are a major customer, resilience is even stronger. Compared to many other growth industries, including EVs, renewable energy, etc. these very attractive traits are very pronounced for software companies, including Palantir. As an example of the attractiveness of Palantir's business mode, let's look at its gross margins versus those of other hyped growth stocks:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bd5c147cb9babf998cfd35649f4cad22\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>Clearly, Palantir is in a class of its own compared to Tesla, Beyond Meat, Peloton (PTON), or Canadian Solar (CSIQ) (as a stand-in for most solar and renewable stocks).</p><p><b>Palantir's Valuation - How High Is It?</b></p><p>Looking at current earnings per share estimates for this year, which stand at $0.16, Palantir is trading for around 150 times this year's earnings. That is, of course, an extremely high valuation in absolute terms.</p><p>However, it should be considered that Palantir is just beginning to generate positive net profits. Shortly after breaking even, net profits can't be expected to be very high yet. But due to two key reasons, Palantir's earnings should grow meaningfully in coming years. First, the nature of the market the company is active in will allow for strong revenue growth going forward. On top of that, thanks to the fact that Palantir generates very high gross margins, each additional dollar of revenue that the company generates in the future should help a lot in improving profitability. When a company like Palantir adds $1 billion in additional sales, that will do a lot more for its bottom line compared to most other companies, that won't see profits grow as much due to lower margins.</p><p>Analysts are thus, not surprisingly, forecasting strong earnings per share growth over the next two years:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f4a7db46186418a049678d1ecf17ff30\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"436\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>Whereas Palantir trades for around 150 times this year's earnings, the stock trades for 118 times 2022's earnings, and for 97 times 2023's earnings. Those aren't low valuations at all, but it can make sense to look at how companies such as Netflix (NFLX) or Amazon (AMZN) were valued in their younger days.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8c82732cfdc04638279f1d9e77e9c1e4\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>Not too long ago, these companies were trading for 200-300 times net profits, despite having reached a much larger size already. Palantir, with stronger gross margins and a smaller size, is not trading for 200 or even 300 times net earnings. Since we all know that buying Amazon or Netflix five years ago was a great decision, Palantir's current valuation may indeed not be unreasonable.</p><p>When we assume that current estimates for 2023's net earnings are correct, and that Palantir will be able to grow its earnings per share by 25% a year through the 2020s, then net earnings would total $1.23 in 2030. Put a 35 times earnings multiple on that, and shares would be valued at $43, which would lead to annual returns of ~6%.</p><p>A 35 times earnings multiple may be on the conservative side still - after all, even a giant such as Amazon is trading at 72 times earnings today. Palantir may also be able to grow its earnings per share at a higher pace than 25% a year during the 2020s. Lastly, Palantir may be way more profitable in 2023 compared to what analysts are forecasting right now (after all, the company has&nbsp;easily beaten estimates&nbsp;in the past), which would lead to higher EPS in 2030 as well, assuming an unchanged growth rate. In a more bullish scenario, where Palantir earns $0.30 in 2023, grows its EPS by 30% a year through 2030 and trades at 40 times net earnings in 2030, the stock could be worth $75 nine years from now, delivering 200% in that scenario. I'm not saying that this will happen - no one can know that right now. But I believe that, with reasonable assumptions, it can be argued that Palantir's shares may not be all that overpriced right now.</p><p><b>How To Get Into Palantir At A Lower Price</b></p><p>For those that like the company, but that deem shares a little too expensive, selling covered calls or cash-secured puts could be an interesting choice. Due to a high implied volatility, option premiums are quite high. If you buy 100 shares at $25 and sell a $30 call with expiry in June 2022 at $6.30, you effectively entered a position at $18.70, or a 25% discount to the current price. There is a risk of shares getting called away, but even in that scenario, one would still generate a return of 45% ($36.30/$25) in 14 months, which would not at all be unattractive.</p><p>Similarly, entering a position via cash-secured puts (e.g. Jan 2022 puts with a strike price selling for$3.00right now) could be a way to get a sizeable discount versus the current share price.</p><p><b>Takeaway</b></p><p>At first sight, Palantir looks quite expensive, trading for around 150 times net earnings. But when we take a closer look, the above-average quality, strong growth outlook, and great market position, Palantir may well be worth its current price. I see it as one of the most favorable among the hyped-up growth stocks - which I see as overvalued in most cases - and believe that investors who buy Palantir's shares right here may very well do fine in the long run. I still believe that utilizing option strategies to enter a position at a lower effective price could be a good idea though, as this is highly rewarding thanks to very high option premiums.</p><p>Palantir looks quite expensive but unlike many other hyped-up names, it could be worth its current valuation, I believe. But when we take a closer look, the price might be justified, as Palantir has a compelling ultra-long-term growth outlook due to a strong position in an absolute growth market. Despite a seemingly very high valuation, Palantir's shares could be a solid long-term investment.Palantir Is Not A Typical Stock I LikeIn general, I am mostly focused on dividend-paying stocks that trade at reasonable or cheap valuations, with some \"growth at a reasonable price\" (GARP) added in. Stocks trading at 100 times forward earnings, or even higher than that, are not at all typical of what I like to write about, and what I personally invest in. I have been quite critical of many stocks that trade at what I believe are too-high valuations. Nevertheless, I see Palantir as a stock that has a lot of potential in the long run, and that seems worthy of consideration, despite a seemingly very high valuation.The reasoning for why I like Palantir, despite it trading at a quite high valuation, rests on three main pillars:1. Palantir is active in an absolute growth market that will grow for decadesBig data, data analysis, and artificial intelligence are not short-term trends that will play out in a couple of years, but rather megatrends that will most likely become ever more important. 20 years from now, 30 years from now, and likely even farther in the future, big data and artificial intelligence will still be growth markets.2. Palantir has a very clear industry leadership positionMany hyped-up growth companies are active in a highly fought-over market, oftentimes there is no clear, large moat for first-movers and current market leaders. I believe that in Palantir's case, that is not true. The company has developed a wide range of products and offerings for customers that are very unique, and where competition is not looking like a major concern. On top of that, Palantir has established very strong connections with government agencies and the military, which will be hard to replicate for eventual competitors. This does, I believe, result in a high likelihood that Palantir will not only be the leading player in the near term, but that it will retain this position for a long time. I personally am not so sure about the future leadership position of other current hyped-up leaders, including Tesla (TSLA) in EVs, Beyond Meat (BYND) in plant-based meat alternatives, etc.3. The industry Palantir is active in has great characteristicsBig data and artificial intelligence are not only absolute growth markets, they also, as part of the software/service tech industry, offer a range of highly compelling characteristics. First, the software industry has, on average, very high gross and operating margins. This is, at least partially, the result of relatively low proportional costs, as there is no expensive manufacturing infrastructure needed.High gross margins are one of the common traits shared by companies that are able to deliver strong long-term share price gains.The software industry is also capital extensive, which means that free cash flows, on average, are relatively high. There is no need to build out a lot of expensive infrastructure such as manufacturing plants, which translates into attractive free cash generation that can be used for tuck-in acquisitions, debt reduction, etc.Third, the software industry overall is not cyclical. As software is an essential part of our daily lives and of doing business, customers don't scale back their use of software during a recession or any other type of crisis. In Palantir's case, where government agencies are a major customer, resilience is even stronger. Compared to many other growth industries, including EVs, renewable energy, etc. these very attractive traits are very pronounced for software companies, including Palantir. As an example of the attractiveness of Palantir's business mode, let's look at its gross margins versus those of other hyped growth stocks:Data by YChartsClearly, Palantir is in a class of its own compared to Tesla, Beyond Meat, Peloton (PTON), or Canadian Solar (CSIQ) (as a stand-in for most solar and renewable stocks).Palantir's Valuation - How High Is It?Looking at current earnings per share estimates for this year, which stand at $0.16, Palantir is trading for around 150 times this year's earnings. That is, of course, an extremely high valuation in absolute terms.However, it should be considered that Palantir is just beginning to generate positive net profits. Shortly after breaking even, net profits can't be expected to be very high yet. But due to two key reasons, Palantir's earnings should grow meaningfully in coming years. First, the nature of the market the company is active in will allow for strong revenue growth going forward. On top of that, thanks to the fact that Palantir generates very high gross margins, each additional dollar of revenue that the company generates in the future should help a lot in improving profitability. When a company like Palantir adds $1 billion in additional sales, that will do a lot more for its bottom line compared to most other companies, that won't see profits grow as much due to lower margins.Analysts are thus, not surprisingly, forecasting strong earnings per share growth over the next two years:Data by YChartsWhereas Palantir trades for around 150 times this year's earnings, the stock trades for 118 times 2022's earnings, and for 97 times 2023's earnings. Those aren't low valuations at all, but it can make sense to look at how companies such as Netflix (NFLX) or Amazon (AMZN) were valued in their younger days.Data by YChartsNot too long ago, these companies were trading for 200-300 times net profits, despite having reached a much larger size already. Palantir, with stronger gross margins and a smaller size, is not trading for 200 or even 300 times net earnings. Since we all know that buying Amazon or Netflix five years ago was a great decision, Palantir's current valuation may indeed not be unreasonable.When we assume that current estimates for 2023's net earnings are correct, and that Palantir will be able to grow its earnings per share by 25% a year through the 2020s, then net earnings would total $1.23 in 2030. Put a 35 times earnings multiple on that, and shares would be valued at $43, which would lead to annual returns of ~6%.A 35 times earnings multiple may be on the conservative side still - after all, even a giant such as Amazon is trading at 72 times earnings today. Palantir may also be able to grow its earnings per share at a higher pace than 25% a year during the 2020s. Lastly, Palantir may be way more profitable in 2023 compared to what analysts are forecasting right now (after all, the company has easily beaten estimates in the past), which would lead to higher EPS in 2030 as well, assuming an unchanged growth rate. In a more bullish scenario, where Palantir earns $0.30 in 2023, grows its EPS by 30% a year through 2030 and trades at 40 times net earnings in 2030, the stock could be worth $75 nine years from now, delivering 200% in that scenario. I'm not saying that this will happen - no one can know that right now. But I believe that, with reasonable assumptions, it can be argued that Palantir's shares may not be all that overpriced right now.How To Get Into Palantir At A Lower PriceFor those that like the company, but that deem shares a little too expensive, selling covered calls or cash-secured puts could be an interesting choice. Due to a high implied volatility, option premiums are quite high. If you buy 100 shares at $25 and sell a $30 call with expiry in June 2022 at $6.30, you effectively entered a position at $18.70, or a 25% discount to the current price. There is a risk of shares getting called away, but even in that scenario, one would still generate a return of 45% ($36.30/$25) in 14 months, which would not at all be unattractive.Similarly, entering a position via cash-secured puts (e.g. Jan 2022 puts with a strike price selling for$3.00right now) could be a way to get a sizeable discount versus the current share price.TakeawayAt first sight, Palantir looks quite expensive, trading for around 150 times net earnings. But when we take a closer look, the above-average quality, strong growth outlook, and great market position, Palantir may well be worth its current price. I see it as one of the most favorable among the hyped-up growth stocks - which I see as overvalued in most cases - and believe that investors who buy Palantir's shares right here may very well do fine in the long run. I still believe that utilizing option strategies to enter a position at a lower effective price could be a good idea though, as this is highly rewarding thanks to very high option premiums.Palantir looks quite expensive but unlike many other hyped-up names, it could be worth its current valuation, I believe.
