tg-height=\"1024\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>RichVintage/E+ via Getty Images</span></p>\n<p><b>Meme Stock Mentions As An Indicator</b></p>\n<p>I have a theory that the only reason Musk's Tesla (TSLA) has achieved the eye watering market capitalisation of $1.141T, with a P/E ratio of 368, is because Elon Musk himself is a master of PR and marketing.</p>\n<p>Core to this theory is that supply and demand is what drives a share's price (whereas fundamental and perceived value is what drives the individual investor to buy or sell), and demand can be manipulated through awareness and PR efforts. I believe prices will revert back to fundamental value in the long run.</p>\n<p>I argue that this awareness effect applies more to retail investors than to more sophisticated investors or investment funds, though this would obviously have a flow-on effect on them.</p>\n<p>A more traditional example of this theory is how news and announcements affect share prices, albeit they are more closely tied to fundamental value.</p>\n<p><b>Subreddit WallStreetBets As A Catalyst</b></p>\n<p>The Reddit Community WallStreetBets (WSB) is infamous for its role in the January 2021 GameStop saga, which led to a huge price increase in the retail firm's share price after the Reddit community&nbsp;popularised day trading of the firm.</p>\n<p>WSB is a community of mostly retail traders, some with no formal investing education or prior experience, and utilising margin loans through trading apps like Robinhood (though more experienced traders are present and active in the subreddit) to invest in the financial markets.</p>\n<p>The GameStop saga may be (mostly) over now, but this community is still thriving. At the time of the GameStop saga, the community had less than 3m members, while today it has over 11.2m members.</p>\n<p>Given the almost 4X growth in community size thanks to the amount of attention generated in the GameStop saga, it's arguable that the community is more powerful than ever before in the day trading space.</p>\n<p><b>The Elon Musk/WSB Connection</b></p>\n<p>Musk is famously aware of, and following, the WSB subreddit,once tweeting to his 43m followers a link to the subreddit&nbsp;with the caption \"Gamestonk.\"</p>\n<p>Musk has also claimed that short sellers have a negative impact on the valuation of TSLA, and it's not hard to imagine how he might see WSB as a tool to affect the share price.</p>\n<p>Musk is regarded as a hero by the WSB community, who are very aware that he follows them, and often post memes or comments in a worshipful manner,declaring him a \"Meme Lord.\"</p>\n<p><b>Tracking WSB Community Sentiment</b></p>\n<p>Thanks to a site called&nbsp;Swaggy Stocks, we are able to track WSB sentiment towards TSLA and count TSLA mentions (and various other firms that get attention on the subreddit, such as the infamous GameStop (GME) short squeeze).</p>\n<p>If we take a look at a 1-year history of the TSLA share price vs WSB mentions and sentiment, a cursory glance reveals a general correlation between mentions and upward price activity.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f24f2a63740b288ba4dad63e8fdaed3f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"490\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p>Another clear trend is the overwhelming positive sentiment towards TSLA (and almost any other stock mentioned there) from the WSB community. Search many of these comments and posts, and you'll see the phrase \"Stonks only go up!\" appear across many, many posts.</p>\n<p><b>Do Other Mediums Have The Same Correlation?</b></p>\n<p>Swaggy Stocks also tracks TSLA mentions across more traditional news sources and other social media sites.</p>\n<p>Searching social media for discussion and due-diligence style posts, Swaggy Stocks is able to show the total number of mentions TSLA generates, to compare with WSB.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a1e518a39e21d05f04e11f43de66c6a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"593\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p>There appears to be a very similar correlation between broader social media mentions of TSLA and stock price activity, but it appears that this attention is reactionary rather than a lead indicator. It is, however, a confirmation of awareness of the stock following along with major price movements, up or down.</p>\n<p><b>What Trends Can We See?</b></p>\n<p>Looking at the two graphs of mentions vs stock price, the most prominent trend is how TSLA mentions, and discussion peaks mostly as major price spikes occur. It does not appear that mentions are a leading indicator, but perhaps a slow-down in mentions might indicate that any further major price movements are not to be expected.</p>\n<p>In my eyes, the more interesting time period (circled in red below) is where mentions of TSLA slowed considerably, and the stock price dwindled following the peak in mentions.</p>\n<p>I argue that in this instance, when the stock fell from $900 to $600, WSB retail investors attention was diverted from the firm and this halted the upward price movement, sending the stock backward towards it's true long-run fundamental value.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d5f5e7c4dafad1ac25fb02d09b089e56\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"490\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p><b>Does This Awareness Effect Apply To Other Stocks?</b></p>\n<p>Given GME was the beginning of notoriety for WSB, it's worth comparing the GME ticker to WSB sentiment to search for similar trends.</p>\n<p>Again, large price movements occur around the same time as WSB commentary spikes, and prices tend to drift lower as attention drifts away.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bcda7b46bafc07f02eaa854255c64d63\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"679\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p>Looking at a third firm, Apple (AAPL), to compare WSB activity with the largest market cap firm in the US, the correlation between mentions and price activity is much weaker, suggesting that there may be a limit to the WSB community's influence. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.</p>\n<p>Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.</p>\n<p>As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.</p>\n<p>This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.</p>\n<p>Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”</p>\n<p>As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know do<i>not</i>want to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.</p>\n<p>What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.</p>\n<p>This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.</p>\n<p>However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.</p>\n<p><b>Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential</b></p>\n<p>I’m talking about&nbsp;<b>Nio, Inc.</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio back in February.</p>\n<p>The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.</p>\n<p>The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies like<b>NVIDIA Corporation</b>(NASDAQ:<b>NVDA</b>), another one of my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.</p>\n<p>With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.</p>\n<p>That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.</p>\n<p>Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”</p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.\nInstead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.\nAs a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.\nThis “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.\nBoth the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles.
