While stockholders tend to look for such companies in the tech industry, some of the massive percentage-gainers also come from the consumer sector.
\n
Two examples of such growth are Chipotle (NYSE:CMG) and Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX). Each began as a single location in the late 20th century and grew to become two of the largest restaurant chains in the U.S. Not only have they delivered impressive stock price growth, but these two companies also offer lessons for investors hoping to find future growth stocks.
\n
\n
1. Chipotle
\n
Chipotle made its way by combining two popular concepts. The popularity of restaurants like McDonald's has long shown that consumers like access to fast food. However, McDonald's and other restaurants had failed to offer the healthy choices that we re growing in demand from many in the market. Chipotle changed that by providing nutritious meals to customers in a fast-casual setting.
\n
Beginning with a restaurant in Denver in 1993, Chipotle grew to 489 locations by the time it filed to launch its IPO in early 2006. With the stock at just under $1,700 per share at the time of this writing, $1,000 would only buy a fractional share today. However, when it launched its IPO in 2006, the company priced its stock at $22 per share. At the time, that would have bought 45 shares. Today, those shares are worth around $76,000!
\n
Moreover, with a P/E ratio approaching 70 and a market cap nearing $50 billion, the growth is likely not done yet. The company operates over 2,000 locations, but its most important number could be 6,000, as it wants to eventually operate that many restaurants in North America. With Chipotle adding about 200 locations per year and comparable store sales growth in the 15% per-year range, the increases should continue for some time to come.
\n
2. Starbucks
\n
Starbucks's growth to nearly 34,000 locations worldwide shows how far a restaurant concept can reach. American consumers have long demonstrated a love for coffee. Despite its popularity, the coffee house had not taken off in the U.S. until Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz brought the concept from Italy and adapted it for U.S. consumers.
\n
Its stores spread across the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada quickly, and by the time Starbucks launched its IPO in 1992, it had spread out from Seattle into 165 locations. At the original IPO price of $17 per share, $1,000 would have purchased 58 shares.
\n
Thanks to six 2-for-1 stock splits, those 58 shares would have turned into 3,712 shares now valued at approximately $410,000. Moreover, this does not include the dividend income investors have collected since 2010. That payout has risen every year since, and in 2021, this position would have generated $6,830 in dividend income without selling a single share.
\n
Also, despite its massive size, Starbucks predicts comparable store sales growth in the high single-digit percentages in fiscal 2022. With the company expecting to add 2,000 stores during that time, it has positioned itself to continue the long-term growth in its stock and dividends.
\n
Learning from successful restaurant IPOs
\n
While such stories may give investors hope for the future, they likely want to find the next Chipotle or the new Starbucks. However, picking that stock may prove challenging. Investors who bought Chipotle or Starbucks could have just as easily picked an El Pollo Loco that has experienced little movement over the last five years or a Dunkin', which once traded on exchanges but later went private.
\n
Such possibilities necessitate investments in multiple stocks. However, investors should remember that Chipotle's 7,600% growth and the 34,000% gain in Starbucks since their IPOs can far outweigh stagnation or failure in stock investments that did not succeed. By taking chances on multiple stocks with such potential, one or more of them could return 75-fold gains or more over the long term.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 Stocks That Turned $1,000 Into $75,000 or More
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 Stocks That Turned $1,000 Into $75,000 or More\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-30 16:41 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Growth investors dream of buying the IPO stock that evolves into a future sensation. more than 4,500% year to date. What started out as a joke has enabled some to laugh all the way to the bank.
\n
On the other hand, skeptics about Dogecoin would be just as quick to note that it has given up more than 60% of its earlier gains. Anyone who jumped on the Dogecoin late is probably sitting on some hefty losses.
\n
Regardless of what your take is on Dogecoin, what really matters is where you should put your money now. One place to get some investment ideas is Robinhood's 100 most popular stocks list. Here are two popular Robinhood stocks that could crush Dogecoin going forward.
\n
\n
NVIDIA
\n
While Dogecoin has nosedived in recent months, NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock has taken off. One reason why is NVIDIA's upcoming four-for-one stock split. While stock splits don't impact a company's valuation directly, they can attract greater numbers of small investors.
\n
However, there are plenty of even better reasons to like NVIDIA that have nothing to do with its stock split. The most obvious one is the company's gaming business.
\n
Gaming remains NVIDIA's biggest moneymaker, generating $2.8 billion of the company's total revenue of nearly $5.7 billion in the first quarter of 2021. And business is booming. NVIDIA's gaming revenue more than doubled year over year.
\n
It isn't just that gaming is increasing in popularity (although that is the case). NVIDIA benefits from regular hardware upgrade cycles. New games require even more processing power, which drives demand for the more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).
\n
I especially like that NVIDIA is leveraging its gaming expertise to target new markets. For example, the company recently unveiled Omniverse Enterprise, a platform where design teams can build 3D virtual simulations and collaborate in real-time. In effect, NVIDIA is turning work into play (or vice versa, depending on how you look at it).
\n
NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress said in the company's Q1 conference call, \"As the world becomes more digital, virtual and collaborative, we see a significant revenue opportunity for Omniverse.\" I think that Kress's optimism is well-founded.
\n
Don't overlook NVIDIA's potential in the data center market, though. The company posted data center revenue of more than $2 billion in Q1, up 79% year over year. NVIDIA should enjoy sustained growth as more applications include artificial intelligence (AI).
\n
Assuming NVIDIA's pending acquisition of Arm passes regulatory hurdles, the company should further cement its leadership position in AI. In particular, the Arm deal would boost NVIDIA's presence in the fast-growing Internet of Things market with chips for mobile devices.
\n
Sure, an overall cryptocurrency crash could cause NVIDIA's shares to fall due to the popularity of the company's GPUs with crypto miners. It's happened before. However, the company has taken steps to segment its gaming business from crypto. I think that any pullback would only be temporary. NVIDIA has too many other strong growth drivers.
\n
Moderna
\n
Most companies can't honestly say that they've helped change the world. Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA) can.
\n
The biotech's COVID-19 vaccine was second only to the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech to win U.S. Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Moderna reported $1.9 billion in sales for the vaccine in Q1, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.
\n
Based on supply agreements in place as of early May, Moderna projected that its COVID-19 vaccine would rake in sales this year of $19.2 billion. However, the company has secured additional deals since then.
\n
In just the past two weeks, Moderna has landed two new huge supply agreements. The U.S. government is buying 200 million additional doses of Moderna's COVID19 vaccine. The European Commission agreed to purchase another 150 million doses.
\n
But does Moderna's market cap of close to $90 billion already price all of this growth in? To some extent, yes. However, shares still are trading at only around 10.5 times expected earnings. That's an attractive valuation, especially for a biotech stock.
\n
The big question for Moderna is how strong the recurring revenue from its COVID-19 vaccine will be. While the sales levels of 2021 and 2022 might not be sustainable over the long run, annual vaccinations could be likely (especially with emerging coronavirus variants). I expect Moderna will be able to count on significant COVID-19 vaccine sales for years to come.
\n
Then there's the pipeline. Moderna plans to advance its cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine into late-stage testing this year. It could easily be a megablockbuster if approved. The company has a dozen other programs in clinical testing.
\n
Moderna hopes to use its newfound riches to dramatically boost its pipeline in the near future. CEO Stephane Bancel has stated that he'd like to have up to 50 clinical programs.
\n
All of Moderna's current and planned pipeline programs are based on its messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The company has maintained for a long time that if its mRNA approach worked for one disease, it would work for many diseases.
