Rivian says limited R1T pickup deliveries began in September, with its R1S SUV due out by year-end.</p>\n<p>The R1T electric pickup starts at around $67,500, before the $7,500 federal tax credit. The seven-seat R1S SUV goes for about $70,000. The preorder launch editions of the two vehicles sold out at the end of 2020.</p>\n<p>Rivian Electric Delivery Van</p>\n<p>But Rivian is said to be prioritizing production of electric vans for Amazon. Amazon has ordered 100,000 of Rivian's electric vans. And while Rivian's R1T pickup has grabbed headlines recently, Amazon's vans are more likely to be revenue drivers in the near term. That's why Rivian is reportedly focused on producing hundreds of vans for Amazon this year, while pickup production is nominal.</p>\n<p>Amazon revealed in afilingon Oct. 28 that it had a roughly 20% stake in Rivian.</p>\n<p>However, Rivian recentlyupdated its websiteto say it&nbsp;will begin taking orders for its electric delivery vans in 2022 and will deliver them to fleet customers in early 2023, even though it has an exclusive deal to supply Amazon with electric vans for at least four years.</p>\n<p>Rivian said in anSEC filingthat Amazon would have exclusive rights to the delivery van for four years after the initial delivery date. After that period, Amazon would have the right of first refusal for two years over other customers that wanted to buy Rivian vans.</p>\n<p><b>Rivian IPO</b></p>\n<p>Rivian has raised $11.15 billion in private capital so far, according to PitchBook. He said the company expects battery cell suppliers to double production next year.</p>\n<p>Despite the pandemic and the supply chain crisis, Tesla posted record deliveries during the quarter, thanks to sales of cheaper models including Model 3 sedans and Model Ys.</p>\n<p>The carmaker, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, said revenue jumped to $11.96 billion from $6.04 billion a year earlier, when its California factory was shut down for more than six weeks due to local lockdown orders to fight the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Analysts had expected revenue of about $11.3 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Excluding items, Tesla posted a profit of $1.45 per share, easily topping analyst expectations for a profit of 98 cents per share.</p>\n<p>Tesla said operating income rose with volume growth and cost reduction, which offset higher supply chain costs, lower regulatory credit revenue and other items including $23 million in losses on investment in cryptocurrency bitcoin.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s profitability has often relied on selling regulatory credits to other automakers, but in the second quarter, Tesla was profitable without these credits for the first time since the end of 2019. Its GAAP net income was $1.14 billion in the second quarter. Revenue from the credits only totaled $354 million.</p>\n<p>“Tesla impressed with its numbers, as most of its revenue came from vehicle sales,” Jesse Cohen, senior analyst at Investing.com, said.</p>\n<p>Carmaker Stellantis expects to achieve its European carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions targets this year without environmental credits bought from Tesla.</p>\n<p>Tesla said it said it has delayed the launch of the Semi truck program to 2022 to focus on starting factories and due to limited availability of battery cells and other parts this year.</p>\n<p>But the company’s new 4680 batteries are not ready for volume production; executives said it was difficult to predict when technological challenges would be resolved.</p>\n<p>In an aside, Musk said he “most likely will not be on earnings calls” going forward to discuss financial results with investors and analysts. This time around, he is forecasting a decline of 10% or more for the leading U.S. stock indexes. As for timing, he says that the decline could begin at any time, but he anticipates that it will begin no later than mid-August.</p>\n<p><b>The source of the market’s ill-health</b></p>\n<p>Martin bases his sobering forecast on the increasing divergences within the U.S. market, as indicated by fewer and fewer stocks participating in the headline-grabbing strength of the leading indices. One indicator of these divergences is the growing number of stocks hitting new lows, for example. On Wednesday of this week, for example, even as the Nasdaq 100NDX,-0.71%and the S&amp;P 100OEX,-0.37%indexes were hitting new highs, many sectors were registering a plurality of new lows.</p>\n<p>This was particularly evident in the small- and mid-cap sectors, as represented by the Russell 2000 index. On July 13 there were more new lows than new highs within that index for the second consecutive day. In Martin’s data for the Russell 2000’s new highs and new lows, which extends back to June 2000, what happened this week has happened only three other times — in September 2014, July 2015 and October 2018. In all three cases, three months later both the S&amp;P 500 and Russell 2000 were at least 10% lower.</p>\n<p>Martin reports that the only area of the market not showing dangerous divergences right now is the large-cap dominated S&amp;P 500. Except for that sector, he says that the “stock market’s current internals are some of the worst I’ve seen in decades.”</p>\n<p>Martin added that these severe divergences are occurring as equities are severely overvalued — with some stocks in bubble territory. This means that, when the market does decline, it’s likely to fall more than it would otherwise.</p>\n<p>Adding fuel to the fire, he continued, is the too-bullish investor sentiment that prevails right now. As contrarians remind us, such sentiment extremes mean that the path of least resistance for the market is down.</p>\n<p>To be sure, Martin concluded, stocks have been overvalued for some time now, and bullish sentiment has been at or close to extremes. The missing piece was market divergences. Both shares fell.</p><p>Investors welcomed data showing the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week dropped to a fresh <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-year low. The Labor Department report suggested layoffs were subsiding and expectations were rising for another month of blockbuster job growth in April.</p><p>The speedy U.S. vaccination rollout has improved the economic outlook as people plan summer vacations and leisure spending, but a surge in COVID-19 cases in India and elsewhere in Asia has kept investors anxious, Hayes said.</p><p>Equities have likely reached a near-term top as expectations are too high, said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab.</p><p>\"There's going to be continued positive moves throughout the remainder of the year but we are due for some sort of a pullback in the very short term,\" he said. \"Then the dip buyers will step back in.\"</p><p>First-quarter earnings are expected to increase 31.9% from a year ago, the highest rate since the fourth quarter, according to IBES Refinitiv data.</p><p>All 11 S&amp;P 500 sectors closed lower as Microsoft, Apple Inc , Amazon.com Inc and Tesla Inc weighted the most on the downdraft.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.94% to 33,815.9, the S&amp;P 500 lost 0.92% at 4,134.98, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.94% to 13,818.41.</p><p>Volume on U.S. exchanges was 10.35 billion shares, compared with the 10.32 billion full-session average over the last 20 trading days.</p><p>Chipmaker Intel Corp forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street targets, betting its next generation of processors for data centers and PCs will meet growing demand for cloud-based services. Shares slipped about 1% in after-hours trade.</p><p>AT&amp;T Inc beat Wall Street revenue targets as the U.S. economic reopening following pandemic-linked restrictions boosted smartphone sales and the media business. AT&amp;T shares rose 4.2%.</p><p>Biogen Inc beat quarterly profit estimates on stronger-than-expected sales for its muscle wasting disorder drug, though concerns over its reliance on its yet-to-be approved Alzheimer's therapy, aducanumab, weighed on shares. Short sellers have always liked TSLA stock. But it takes more than just a large amount of short interest to trigger a short squeeze.</p>\n<p>The most important factor when it comes to a short squeeze isn’t total short interest.</p>\n<p><b>Anatomy of a Short Squeeze</b></p>\n<p>It’s short percent of float. A company’s total number of existing shares are its shares outstanding. However, a significant portion of those shares outstanding are typically held by large institutional investors and company insiders. On a standard day in the market, big institutions and company executives aren’t trading millions of dollars of stock.</p>\n<p>Everyone familiar with the basics of a free market knows that price is typically determined by market supply and demand. In the stock market, the number of shares of stock is the supply side of the equation. If company insiders and institutions aren’t selling, their shares aren’t available to contribute to the available market supply.</p>\n<p>A company’s “float” represents the total shares not held by company insiders or institutions. In a practical sense, it represents the effective supply of shares available to trade freely on the market.</p>\n<p>A short squeeze is triggered in part when there is not enough supply of shares to meet demand. That dynamic sends a stock’s share price soaring. And that soaring share price triggers short sellers to cover their positions by buying stock. The more short sellers cover, the bigger the losses remaining short sellers endure.</p>\n<p>At some point, the positive feedback loop hits the point of no return and the stock takes off to the moon.</p>\n<p>Short percent of float is calculated by taking the total short interest and dividing by the total float. It’s a crude estimate of just how explosive a short squeeze could be if all the short sellers are forced to cover all at once.</p>\n<p><b>TSLA Stock vs. GameStop</b></p>\n<p>According toOrtex Analytics, TSLA stock recently had a total short interest of about 32.36 million shares. At a share price of about $645, short sellers were betting $20.87 billion against TSLA stock.</p>\n<p>GameStop recently had about 8 million shares held short, according to Ortex. At a share price of $169, that means GameStop’s total short interest was about $1.35 billion.</p>\n<p>So how is it that GME stock experienced the mother of all short squeezes back in January? Meanwhile, TSLA stock is down 4.7% year-to-date.</p>\n<p>GameStop’s short percent of float recently was about 13.3%. Any number over 10% is relatively high, but it’s nothing crazy for a company like GameStop that is struggling so badly. Tesla’s short percent of float is currently just 4.1%, which is certainly nothing extraordinary.</p>\n<p>Back on Jan. 15, GameStop’s short percent of float was an eye-popping 107.7%. That extremely high short interest coupled with the flood of Reddit traders buying the stock is the reason GME stock skyrocketed from under $20 to as high as $483 in just a couple of weeks. It was a classic short squeeze.</p>\n<p>Since that time, GameStop’s short interest and short percent of float plummeted. It’s no coincidence the stock has dropped back below $165 as well.</p>\n<p><b>What Does This Mean for Tesla?</b></p>\n<p>Yes, short sellers are betting $20.87 billion against Tesla, which is a massive amount of money. But Tesla is a $620 billion company with a huge float. It’s highly unlikely there will ever be the type of supply shortage in TSLA stock that triggered the AMC and GameStop short squeezes earlier this year.</p>\n<p>TSLA stock is not a great short squeeze candidate. Tesla is a story stock. It trades higher or lower based on the story that CEO Elon Musk and other Tesla enthusiasts spread about the company’s potential to completely take over the global auto, energy, technology and transportation industries in the long-term.</p>\n<p>When chapters get added to the story, the stock goes higher. Musk is an excellent storyteller, and he has legions of followers willing to listen to anything he says.</p>\n<p>Byalmost everyobjective fundamental valuation metric, TSLA stock is extremely overvalued. But I have always said story stocks are too dangerous to go long or short. But even with its massive short interest, traders shouldn’t expect a short squeeze fromTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)\nGameStop(NYSE:GME) andAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) are just two examples of stocks that skyrocketed this year thanks to short squeezes. Short sellers have always liked TSLA stock. But it takes more than just a large amount of short interest to trigger a short squeeze.\nThe most important factor when it comes to a short squeeze isn’t total short interest.\nAnatomy of a Short Squeeze\nIt’s short percent of float. A company’s total number of existing shares are its shares outstanding. However, a significant portion of those shares outstanding are typically held by large institutional investors and company insiders. On a standard day in the market, big institutions and company executives aren’t trading millions of dollars of stock.\nEveryone familiar with the basics of a free market knows that price is typically determined by market supply and demand. In the stock market, the number of shares of stock is the supply side of the equation. If company insiders and institutions aren’t selling, their shares aren’t available to contribute to the available market supply.\nA company’s “float” represents the total shares not held by company insiders or institutions. In a practical sense, it represents the effective supply of shares available to trade freely on the market.\nA short squeeze is triggered in part when there is not enough supply of shares to meet demand. That dynamic sends a stock’s share price soaring. And that soaring share price triggers short sellers to cover their positions by buying stock. The more short sellers cover, the bigger the losses remaining short sellers endure.\nAt some point, the positive feedback loop hits the point of no return and the stock takes off to the moon.\nShort percent of float is calculated by taking the total short interest and dividing by the total float. It’s a crude estimate of just how explosive a short squeeze could be if all the short sellers are forced to cover all at once.\nTSLA Stock vs. GameStop\nAccording toOrtex Analytics, TSLA stock recently had a total short interest of about 32.36 million shares. At a share price of about $645, short sellers were betting $20.87 billion against TSLA stock.\nGameStop recently had about 8 million shares held short, according to Ortex. At a share price of $169, that means GameStop’s total short interest was about $1.35 billion.\nSo how is it that GME stock experienced the mother of all short squeezes back in January? Meanwhile, TSLA stock is down 4.7% year-to-date.\nGameStop’s short percent of float recently was about 13.3%. Any number over 10% is relatively high, but it’s nothing crazy for a company like GameStop that is struggling so badly. Tesla’s short percent of float is currently just 4.1%, which is certainly nothing extraordinary.\nBack on Jan. 15, GameStop’s short percent of float was an eye-popping 107.7%. That extremely high short interest coupled with the flood of Reddit traders buying the stock is the reason GME stock skyrocketed from under $20 to as high as $483 in just a couple of weeks. It was a classic short squeeze.\nSince that time, GameStop’s short interest and short percent of float plummeted. It’s no coincidence the stock has dropped back below $165 as well.\nWhat Does This Mean for Tesla?\nYes, short sellers are betting $20.87 billion against Tesla, which is a massive amount of money. But Tesla is a $620 billion company with a huge float. It’s highly unlikely there will ever be the type of supply shortage in TSLA stock that triggered the AMC and GameStop short squeezes earlier this year.\nTSLA stock is not a great short squeeze candidate. Tesla is a story stock. It trades higher or lower based on the story that CEO Elon Musk and other Tesla enthusiasts spread about the company’s potential to completely take over the global auto, energy, technology and transportation industries in the long-term.\nWhen chapters get added to the story, the stock goes higher. Musk is an excellent storyteller, and he has legions of followers willing to listen to anything he says.\nByalmost everyobjective fundamental valuation metric, TSLA stock is extremely overvalued. But I have always said story stocks are too dangerous to go long or short. I continue to recommend investors simply stay away from TSLA stock all The Fed seems to be favoring its full employment mandate more than its price stability mandate.”\n“Accordingly, the upcoming Fed meeting could be impactful,” Carter said.\nBenchmark Treasury yields eased after the bid at the largest-ever TIPS auction touched a record low, pressuring rate sensitive banks.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 25.35 points, or 0.07%, to 34,823.35, the S&P 500 gained 8.79 points, or 0.20%, to 4,367.48 and the Nasdaq Composite added 52.64 points, or 0.36%, to 14,684.60.\nOf the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, tech was shining brightest, gaining 0.7%.
