While inflation concerns tend to prompt selling, driving up yields, investors are now weighing whether the latest signs of inflation are transitory or persistent as the economy rebounds.
\n
\"I would argue that there's a significant part of it that's persistent,\" Vataru said, \"but you won't know that for months.\"
\n
The decline in 10-year yields doesn't necessarily mean market participants agree with the Fed that inflation is transient, according to Vataru, whose career in fixed-income includes past jobs at hedge fund firm Citadel and asset management giant BlackRock.
\n
Vataru said short positioning in the Treasury market may partly explain the yield dip after Thursday's report on the consumer-price index showed the cost of living jumped again in May, driving the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.
\n
Investors with short positions are betting that prices of Treasuries will fall, pushing up yields, according to Vataru. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions. If rates don't rise quickly or far enough, these investors may become nervous about losses and exit their bets. Short sellers become buyers when they cover their positions.
\n
\"A lot of the buying you've seen in the last week or so is probably short covering,\" said Vataru. \"That's part of the reason that when you have a move like this you don't have quite the reaction you otherwise think you would,\" he said of the move down Thursday in the 10-year yield.
\n
Still, yields would be higher if there was more consensus that inflation is a persistent problem, according to Vataru. He said he worries about signs of wage inflation in particular, as that can be sticky, and believes inflation will be in the 3% to 5% range \"the way we're tracking right now.\"
\n
But Ellen Gaske, lead economist for G-10 economies at PGIM Fixed Income's global macroeconomic research group, said the yield on the 10-Year Treasury is up from last year and now sits in line with investors' expectations that inflation is transitory.
\n
\"We already saw the reflation trade,\" she said. \"We already have seen 10-year yields back up, from 50 basis points last summer all the way up to where they are today.\"
\n
Gaske explained that rates \"quickly reflected\" expectations that \"we would climb out of this crisis.\" She now thinks that by the end of this year the Fed may begin tapering its asset purchases, which along with low interest rates has been part of its accommodative stance.
\n
Gaske earlier this year \"pulled forward\" her expectations for a rate increase by the Fed to the second half of 2023. While it may be tempting, it is too soon to add Federal Reserve policymakers to that list.
\n
Much will be made next week out of some potentially \"hawkish\" sounds from the U.S. central bank's policy meeting, economists said, while they stressed that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and the majority of the voting members of the interest rate setting committee remain \"doves\" and fundamentally will be sticking to their \"patient\" stance on monetary policy.
\n
\"They are going to be a little bit less dovish than last time,\" said Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. macro strategist for TD Securities.
\n
U.S. inflation has been sizzling in recent months.
\n
But the recent decline in long-term Treasury yields allows the Fed to lean into the hawkish message, O'Sullivan said.
\n
While inflation has been surprisingly hot, the Fed \"is willing to wait\" until the fall to see how the labor market responds to the inflation spike, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. Wage pressures play a key role in determining the inflation outlook.
\n
\"We don't know how many people will come back into the labor market, how participation will rise, and will it be enough to dampen inflationary pressures,\" Shepherdson said.
\n
\"In the olden days, the Fed would have raised interest rates first and worried about what was going to happen afterwards. But this is a different Fed with a different strategy and a different approach,\" he said.
\n
The Fed is buying $80 billion of Treasurys and $40 billion of mortgage backed securities each month, along with keeping its benchmark interest rate close to zero, to support the economy.
\n
The central bank put itself in a bit of a box in December by guiding markets that it wouldn't slow down the pace of purchases until there had been \"substantial further progress\" in its goals of full employment and stable inflation.
\n
What will be the hawkish sounds?
\n
First, the Fed will give in to the reality that talking about tapering the size of its asset purchases makes sense. This is an important shift. Since December, Powell has managed to hold off such talk.
\n
But this is only the most preliminary of steps.
\n
Instead \"officials will talk in general straw-poll terms on what principles ought to apply,\" said Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP.
\n
It won't be the Fed having a structured debate on a set of options game-planned by the staff. That might happen in July, but not now.
\n
To downplay the significance, the Fed won't say anything about the \"talks about tapering\" in its formal statement, next Wednesday afternoon, O'Sullivan said.
\n
Secondly, the Fed's dot-plot, or interest rate forecast chart, may show a shift forward for the first rate hike to come during 2023. At the moment, the Fed shows no rate hikes until 2024 at the earliest.
\n
At its March meeting, seven out of 18 Fed officials saw a hike before the end of 2023, and it could be nine or ten officials at the June meeting next week.
\n
Thirdly, the Fed will have to raise its forecast for inflation for this year. In March, the Fed penciled in a 2.2% core rate for the personal consumption expenditure index. While that may rise, the Fed won't move the core rate for 2022 much higher, a signal that it still believes the price gains seen in the last few months reflects \"largely transitory\" factors.
\n
During press conferences, Powell has said the economy is \"a long way\" from the Fed's goals and it would take \"some time\" for substantial further progress to be achieved.
\n
\"I wouldn't pound the table and say exactly what Powell is going to say but it is time to start getting away from that language,\" O'Sullivan of TD Securities said.
\n
At the same time, the Fed has got to say that while the economy has made progress, they still need to see a lot more,\" he added.
\n
When the Fed added the \"substantial further progress\" guideline, the economy was 9.8 million jobs short of its level in February 2020. At the moment, the economy is 7.6 million jobs short.
\n
None of these potentially hawkish noises will disturb the central message of Fed officials to the market -- that its benchmark interest rate will stay low next year.
\n
Even if the Fed starts to taper its asset purchases next January, economists think it will take months before the central bank is ready to take the next step and hike its benchmark interest rates off zero.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Don't be fooled by some of the hawkish sounds coming out of the Fed next week
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nDon't be fooled by some of the hawkish sounds coming out of the Fed next week\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2021-06-12 07:11
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n Fed will remain dovish, economists say.\n
\n
There are sixteen different types of hawks found in the United States, according to birdwatchingh.com . No problem.\nMicrosoft said on Thursday (June 10) its Xbox gaming unit is working on new hardware and deals with television makers that will let people play games and experience the Xbox without needing to buy a gaming machine.\nThe news came as Microsoft and other video game industry heavyweights prepare to show off coming titles at an annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) being held virtually beginning Saturday due to the pandemic.\n\"As a company, Microsoft is all-in on gaming,\" chief executive Satya Nadella said in introducing the plan.\nThe idea would be to embed the Xbox experience directly into an Internet-connected TV with nothing else needed except for a video game controller, Microsoft said.\nMicrosoft has been playing on the strength of its Xbox unit as it vies with Amazon's Luna and Google's Stadia cloud gaming services.\nThe United States-based technology giant also announced it is building devices that will plug into any television screen or computer monitor to stream Xbox game play without any consoles.\nMicrosoft's latest Xbox consoles, released last fall, remain in short supply amid a chip shortage that is constraining industries from tech to autos and Microsoft has said it expects to continue to feel the squeeze in the coming months.\nMicrosoft declined to provide more details on the hardware or the planned partnerships.\nAs the company tries to smooth and boost revenue flow by getting more customers on to video-game subscriptions that offer access to hundreds of titles and cloud gaming, Microsoft said subscribers to these services are buying even more content besides their monthly fee.\nIn August, Xbox Vice President Sarah Bond said subscribers to Xbox's Game Pass service spend 20 per cent more on extra games and downloadable content.\nNow, that number is up to 50 per cent, Microsoft said in a briefing and blog posts shared with reporters ahead of E3.\nIn an interview, Ms Bond said the increase is probably due to improved quality of the offering and customers getting more familiar with it.\n\"If you look at the evolution of the catalogue over time, the quality of the games, the sophistication of the games, the percentage of games that have a really well-built, in-game monetisation mechanic, people's understanding of the catalogue and the benefit that comes with Game Pass, I think all that's been advancing and contributes,\" she said.\nIn coming weeks, cloud gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions will be possible through Internet browsers Chrome, Edge and Safari, according to Microsoft.\n\"There's still a place for consoles and PCs and frankly, there always will be, but through the cloud, we will be able to deliver a robust gaming experience to anyone connected to the internet,\" said Xbox unit head Phil Spencer.\n\"And with the cloud, gaming players can participate fully in the same Xbox experience as people on local hardware.\"\nXbox Game Pass had some 18 million subscribers worldwide at the end of last year, according to figures released by Mr Nadella.\nVideo game play has surged during the pandemic, as people turned more than ever to the Internet for entertainment.\nOverall consumer spending on video gaming in the United States totalled just shy of US$15 billion (S$19.8 billion) in the first quarter of this year, up 30 per cent from the same period in 2020, according to industry tracker NPD Group.\nMicrosoft will stream an Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on Sunday, featuring games from its studios around the world.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":259,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":188636473,"gmtCreate":1623431404392,"gmtModify":1634033226328,"author":{"id":"3573987368590100","authorId":"3573987368590100","name":"Tothemoonnn","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573987368590100","authorIdStr":"3573987368590100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Goooo","listText":"Goooo","text":"Goooo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/188636473","repostId":"1153926665","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":59,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":188636684,"gmtCreate":1623431388048,"gmtModify":1634033226570,"author":{"id":"3573987368590100","authorId":"3573987368590100","name":"Tothemoonnn","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573987368590100","authorIdStr":"3573987368590100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Goooo","listText":"Goooo","text":"Goooo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/188636684","repostId":"1182033958","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1182033958","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock ValuAnalysis uses price as a multiple of normalized net free cash flow as its benchmark, and identifies the imaginary dividing line between value and growth stocks at 35x, which is the market median.
\n
The value vs. growth divide would suggest that a company trading at a 17x earnings multiple is undervalued. In reality, ValuAnalysis says it is likely a company that won't grow.
\n
In reality, a stock's value is based on the company's ability to grow free cash flow in an environment where the cost of capital is 5% to 6%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings has increased 2% in the past 30 days to $1.50 per share, which also indicates growth of 8.7% rise from the figure reported in the prior-year period. Markedly, Walmart delivered an earnings surprise of 12.6% in the last reported quarter. Further, the supermarket giant has a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 11.1%, on average.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenues is pegged at $146.4 billion, suggesting an increase of 3.4% from the prior-year quarter’s reported figure. However, it looks like the rate of sales growth will decelerate on a sequential basis. Further, higher stay-at-home trends are boosting the company’s e-commerce sales. The company, on its third-quarter earnings call, said that it has doubled the U.S. store associate count this year, supporting the company’s digital and omnichannel efforts. Certainly, Walmart’s combination of a robust store network and growing digital capacity bodes well.

Incidentally, Walmart has been taking robust strides to strengthen its delivery arm, especially amid the pandemic-led increased demand. This is evident from the company’s launch of the Walmart+ membership program; drone delivery pilots in the United States with Flytrex, Zipline and DroneUp; and a pilot with Cruise to test grocery delivery through self-driven all-electric cars. Walmart also unveiled an alliance with Door Dash in the third quarter to deliver prescriptions from pharmacies of Sam’s Club, alongside expanding Scan & Go to all fuel stations at U.S. Sam’s Clubs. Prior to this, Walmart unveiled Express Delivery during the first quarter at several stores, which helps it deliver orders to customers in less than two hours. As of the fiscal third quarter, Walmart U.S. had 3,600 pickup locations and 2,900 same-day delivery locations.

These factors have been boosting Walmart’s e-commerce business, which along with its solid efforts to bolster store sales helped its U.S. comp sales to increase for the 25th straight time in the last reported quarter. We note that the big-box retailer has been undertaking several efforts to enhance merchandise assortments and it has also been focused on store remodeling, to upgrade them with advanced in-store and digital innovation. Apart from these, the company’s unique deals and saving events, along with other initiatives to make the most of consumers’ evolving shopping needs and the holiday season are likely to have yielded results.

That being said, we cannot ignore the impact of the company’s pricing investments on margins. Also, the company has been seeing high costs related to COVID-19, like higher wages and benefits along with costs associated with sanitization and other safety measures. The company incurred roughly $600 million as additional costs related to COVID-19 in the third quarter of fiscal 2021. Management in its last earnings call said that it expects pandemic-related costs to prevail for a while, alongside some general uncertainties globally.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Walmart Lined Up for Q4 Earnings: Key Things to Note
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWalmart Lined Up for Q4 Earnings: Key Things to Note\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-02-16 17:14 GMT+8 Zacks\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Walmart Inc. is likely to continue with its solid trend and witness a rise in the top and bottom lines when it reports fourth-quarter fiscal 2021 numbers on Feb 18, before market open.
