But even with its massive short interest, traders shouldn’t expect a short squeeze fromTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)
\n
GameStop(NYSE:GME) andAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) are just two examples of stocks that skyrocketed this year thanks to short squeezes. Short sellers have always liked TSLA stock. But it takes more than just a large amount of short interest to trigger a short squeeze.
\n
The most important factor when it comes to a short squeeze isn’t total short interest.
\n
Anatomy of a Short Squeeze
\n
It’s short percent of float. A company’s total number of existing shares are its shares outstanding. However, a significant portion of those shares outstanding are typically held by large institutional investors and company insiders. On a standard day in the market, big institutions and company executives aren’t trading millions of dollars of stock.
\n
Everyone familiar with the basics of a free market knows that price is typically determined by market supply and demand. In the stock market, the number of shares of stock is the supply side of the equation. If company insiders and institutions aren’t selling, their shares aren’t available to contribute to the available market supply.
\n
A company’s “float” represents the total shares not held by company insiders or institutions. In a practical sense, it represents the effective supply of shares available to trade freely on the market.
\n
A short squeeze is triggered in part when there is not enough supply of shares to meet demand. That dynamic sends a stock’s share price soaring. And that soaring share price triggers short sellers to cover their positions by buying stock. The more short sellers cover, the bigger the losses remaining short sellers endure.
\n
At some point, the positive feedback loop hits the point of no return and the stock takes off to the moon.
\n
Short percent of float is calculated by taking the total short interest and dividing by the total float. It’s a crude estimate of just how explosive a short squeeze could be if all the short sellers are forced to cover all at once.
\n
TSLA Stock vs. GameStop
\n
According toOrtex Analytics, TSLA stock recently had a total short interest of about 32.36 million shares. At a share price of about $645, short sellers were betting $20.87 billion against TSLA stock.
\n
GameStop recently had about 8 million shares held short, according to Ortex. At a share price of $169, that means GameStop’s total short interest was about $1.35 billion.
\n
So how is it that GME stock experienced the mother of all short squeezes back in January? Meanwhile, TSLA stock is down 4.7% year-to-date.
\n
GameStop’s short percent of float recently was about 13.3%. Any number over 10% is relatively high, but it’s nothing crazy for a company like GameStop that is struggling so badly. Tesla’s short percent of float is currently just 4.1%, which is certainly nothing extraordinary.
\n
Back on Jan. 15, GameStop’s short percent of float was an eye-popping 107.7%. That extremely high short interest coupled with the flood of Reddit traders buying the stock is the reason GME stock skyrocketed from under $20 to as high as $483 in just a couple of weeks. It was a classic short squeeze.
\n
Since that time, GameStop’s short interest and short percent of float plummeted. It’s no coincidence the stock has dropped back below $165 as well.
\n
What Does This Mean for Tesla?
\n
Yes, short sellers are betting $20.87 billion against Tesla, which is a massive amount of money. But Tesla is a $620 billion company with a huge float. It’s highly unlikely there will ever be the type of supply shortage in TSLA stock that triggered the AMC and GameStop short squeezes earlier this year.
\n
TSLA stock is not a great short squeeze candidate. Tesla is a story stock. It trades higher or lower based on the story that CEO Elon Musk and other Tesla enthusiasts spread about the company’s potential to completely take over the global auto, energy, technology and transportation industries in the long-term.
\n
When chapters get added to the story, the stock goes higher. Musk is an excellent storyteller, and he has legions of followers willing to listen to anything he says.
\n
Byalmost everyobjective fundamental valuation metric, TSLA stock is extremely overvalued. But even with its massive short interest, traders shouldn’t expect a short squeeze fromTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)\nGameStop(NYSE:GME) andAMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) are just two examples of stocks that skyrocketed this year thanks to short squeezes. Short sellers have always liked TSLA stock. But it takes more than just a large amount of short interest to trigger a short squeeze.\nThe most important factor when it comes to a short squeeze isn’t total short interest.\nAnatomy of a Short Squeeze\nIt’s short percent of float. A company’s total number of existing shares are its shares outstanding. However, a significant portion of those shares outstanding are typically held by large institutional investors and company insiders. On a standard day in the market, big institutions and company executives aren’t trading millions of dollars of stock.\nEveryone familiar with the basics of a free market knows that price is typically determined by market supply and demand. In the stock market, the number of shares of stock is the supply side of the equation. If company insiders and institutions aren’t selling, their shares aren’t available to contribute to the available market supply.\nA company’s “float” represents the total shares not held by company insiders or institutions. In a practical sense, it represents the effective supply of shares available to trade freely on the market.\nA short squeeze is triggered in part when there is not enough supply of shares to meet demand. That dynamic sends a stock’s share price soaring. And that soaring share price triggers short sellers to cover their positions by buying stock. The more short sellers cover, the bigger the losses remaining short sellers endure.\nAt some point, the positive feedback loop hits the point of no return and the stock takes off to the moon.\nShort percent of float is calculated by taking the total short interest and dividing by the total float. It’s a crude estimate of just how explosive a short squeeze could be if all the short sellers are forced to cover all at once.\nTSLA Stock vs. GameStop\nAccording toOrtex Analytics, TSLA stock recently had a total short interest of about 32.36 million shares. At a share price of about $645, short sellers were betting $20.87 billion against TSLA stock.\nGameStop recently had about 8 million shares held short, according to Ortex. At a share price of $169, that means GameStop’s total short interest was about $1.35 billion.\nSo how is it that GME stock experienced the mother of all short squeezes back in January? Meanwhile, TSLA stock is down 4.7% year-to-date.\nGameStop’s short percent of float recently was about 13.3%. Any number over 10% is relatively high, but it’s nothing crazy for a company like GameStop that is struggling so badly. Tesla’s short percent of float is currently just 4.1%, which is certainly nothing extraordinary.\nBack on Jan. 15, GameStop’s short percent of float was an eye-popping 107.7%. That extremely high short interest coupled with the flood of Reddit traders buying the stock is the reason GME stock skyrocketed from under $20 to as high as $483 in just a couple of weeks. It was a classic short squeeze.\nSince that time, GameStop’s short interest and short percent of float plummeted. It’s no coincidence the stock has dropped back below $165 as well.\nWhat Does This Mean for Tesla?\nYes, short sellers are betting $20.87 billion against Tesla, which is a massive amount of money. But Tesla is a $620 billion company with a huge float. It’s highly unlikely there will ever be the type of supply shortage in TSLA stock that triggered the AMC and GameStop short squeezes earlier this year.\nTSLA stock is not a great short squeeze candidate. Tesla is a story stock. It trades higher or lower based on the story that CEO Elon Musk and other Tesla enthusiasts spread about the company’s potential to completely take over the global auto, energy, technology and transportation industries in the long-term.\nWhen chapters get added to the story, the stock goes higher. Musk is an excellent storyteller, and he has legions of followers willing to listen to anything he says.\nByalmost everyobjective fundamental valuation metric, TSLA stock is extremely overvalued. But I have always said story stocks are too dangerous to go long or short. I continue to recommend investors simply stay away from TSLA stock all together.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":46,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":802354900,"gmtCreate":1627722965200,"gmtModify":1633756798545,"author":{"id":"3564525745521630","authorId":"3564525745521630","name":"Huat8989","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ae8e0a19c3f1c3e762ed55ffc0e5335","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3564525745521630","authorIdStr":"3564525745521630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good info","listText":"Good info","text":"Good info","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/802354900","repostId":"1186334150","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1186334150","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627713845,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1186334150?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-31 14:44","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Infrastructure Spending Is on Its Way. More construction means more plans and designs for Atlas to review. These eventually become finished projects that need annual inspections, paying dividends for years.
\n
And yet Atlas shares have stalled. At a recent $9, the stock trades for just eight times enterprise value to estimated 2022 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda. That multiple is a significant discount to companies in related inspection businesses, such asMontrose Environmental Group(MEG) andTetra Tech(TTEK), which trade for more than 22 times EV/2022 Ebitda.
\n
“Right now, part of the valuation discount is due to the debt, but I would say there are companies like Atlas where the debt is appropriate,” says Kevin Silverman, chief investment officer and portfolio manager at small-cap–focused Sterling Partners Equity Advisors, which owns more than $2 million worth of Atlas stock, accounting for about 2% of its assets under management. “The debt helps equity holders if you have steady profit margins and can use it for growth.”
\n
And Atlas has substantial opportunities for growth. Beyond the infrastructure-bill boost, Atlas has a long-term strategy of consolidating the fragmented U.S. inspection-services market while reducing its debt levels. Both should increase its appeal to investors and earn it a higher valuation multiple.
\n
The Austin, Texas–headquartered company went public inearly 2020via a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. Using a 15 times Ebitda multiple, Sterling’s Silverman sees shares going to $43 three years from now, as debt paydown continues and earnings rise.\nAtlas’ balance sheet remains a fixer-upper, but the company has the right foundation.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":40,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":891728276,"gmtCreate":1628432782095,"gmtModify":1631885314737,"author":{"id":"3564525745521630","authorId":"3564525745521630","name":"Huat8989","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ae8e0a19c3f1c3e762ed55ffc0e5335","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3564525745521630","authorIdStr":"3564525745521630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$Going strong","listText":"$Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$Going strong","text":"$Airbnb, Inc.(ABNB)$Going strong","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7ea49c63f97e6597968252830bb78578","width":"750","height":"1300"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/891728276","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":183,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":893449221,"gmtCreate":1628297483163,"gmtModify":1633751912756,"author":{"id":"3564525745521630","authorId":"3564525745521630","name":"Huat8989","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ae8e0a19c3f1c3e762ed55ffc0e5335","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3564525745521630","authorIdStr":"3564525745521630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/893449221","repostId":"1143051031","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":148,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":805895138,"gmtCreate":1627868711924,"gmtModify":1633755787905,"author":{"id":"3564525745521630","authorId":"3564525745521630","name":"Huat8989","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ae8e0a19c3f1c3e762ed55ffc0e5335","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3564525745521630","authorIdStr":"3564525745521630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ","listText":"Great ","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/805895138","repostId":"1130492644","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1130492644","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627867792,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1130492644?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-08-02 09:29","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple: Take Your Profits Now, Come Back Later","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1130492644","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Summary\n\nDividend Yield Theory is a great indicator of overvalued and undervalued shares for healthy","content":"
Summary
\n
\n
Dividend Yield Theory is a great indicator of overvalued and undervalued shares for healthy companies.
\n
Apple’s current high growth is temporary.
\n
Apple is on its way to becoming a dividend aristocrat.
\n
\n
Christopher Jue/Getty Images Entertainment
\n
Investment Thesis
\n
Investors are treating Apple (AAPL) as if it has found a second growth spurt. In reality Apple is now a fully grown cash cow, not a young budding calf. The pandemic made many companies transition to the internet faster than they wanted to. That is good for Apple but because it was already a mature business prior to the pandemic it will revert to its normal pre-pandemic growth rates.
\n
Apple’s 5 year average dividend yield from 2016 to 2020 is 1.46% currently the dividend yield on Apple is 0.68%. Apple has been paying a dividend for almost 10 years and the average is also pointing to a yield of ~1.4%. In order for Apple to offer such a yield, share prices would have to move down toward range of $75-$85. Now is the time to take your Apple profits before it reverts to the mean.
\n
Why Apple Is Overvalued, Dividend Yield Theory
\n
Dividend Yield Theory was popularized by Investment Quality Trends founder Geraldine Weiss through a book titled Dividends Don’t Lie. The essence of Dividend Yield Theory is that high quality companies tend to have a “normal” yield and as the market falls in love or out of love with the company the dividend yield fluctuates to create buy and sell opportunities.
\n
Source: Seeking Alphadividend yield
\n
Here we have Apple’s Dividend Yield History. Namely Apple had already largely penetrated its total addressable market. Prior to the pandemic, most of us had never heard of Zoom. We started working from home and needed a solution for remote communication, and bam Zoom capitalizes. Prior to the pandemic, the iPhone was still the smartphone to beat, the smartphone with tens of millions of users, the must-have status symbol in places as far away as China. I spent a semester abroad in China in 2012. During that time, my professors told us how important status symbols are to the Chinese. Students of all ages would not go to school until their parents had bought them an iPhone because without it they would lose “face”. Many could not afford the phone plans and I and my friends witnessed many people having an iPhone just for show. That was in 2012, 8 years before the pandemic.
\n
Source: Apple Q3 2021*covers Apr – Jun 2021*
\n
As we can see, the majority of Apple’s revenue comes from products. I don't see such a catalyst on the horizon, and currently iPhone sales are again carrying Apple’s revenue to record levels. iPhone sales seem to be selling so well because of the coming transition to 5G and many iPhone owners have a device that is at least 3 years old.
\n
The iPhone 12 was unveiled and released in October 2020. This means the super cycle is expected to end with the iPhone 13 which is expected to come out in September or October. I believe this indicates FY 2022 will be a rough year for Apple shareholders.
\n
Apple’s Third And Final Act - A Cash Cow
\n
Investors need to pay attention to Apple’s future as a dividend aristocrat. Apple is transitioning toward more service based revenues. This is a higher margin business but there is less explosive innovation, meaning growth will decline.
\n
At the current share price, investors are “locking in” a targeted return of 9% over the next 10 years based on some optimistic assumptions.
\n
\n
Growth of 19.3% for the first 5 years followed by 12% growth for the second five years.
\n
An expected dividend growth rate of 17.5%
\n
Apple reverts to their historic P/E of 21.
\n
\n
All of that together means Apple’s share price in 10 years will be $293.47 and the dividend will be at $4.43 a share giving existing shareholders a yield of 1.5% which is much closer to their current 5-year average yield.
\n
Apple’s dividend payout ratio is currently 15.86%. Other companies in the IT sector like Texas Instruments (TXN), and Intuit (INTU) have a payout ratio of 51% and 25% respectively which shows Apple’s dividends will be much higher in the coming years. With a projected EPS of $14 in 2031 a 51% payout would mean a dividend of $7/sh.
\n
Risk and Opportunity, The Dividend increase
\n
Based on the 5 year average dividend yield and the current rate of dividend increases, it is likely the dividend will be increased to $1.03-$1.14. In order for Apple to maintain its historic yield at the projected future dividend, Apple shares would have to trade around $80. it is possible that Apple pays up and raises their dividend to $1.89. Apple spent $14 billion on their dividend in 2020 and raising it to $1.89 will increase the price tag to $31 billion. This would increase their payout ratio to 34% which is a typical payout ratio for cash cow companies.
\n
The expected dividend I project is based on the percentage of operating cash flow the dividend takes up. Over the last 3 years, it has ranged from 15% to 18%. I used an estimated $100.15 billion for operating cash flows and at 19% you get the $1.14 dividend.
\n
Source: Seeking AlphaCash Flow Statement
\n
Lastly it is possible that a dividend yield of less than 1% becomes the norm for Apple. If the current 2021 yield average of 0.63% becomes the new normal, Apple’s share price should rise to $163.49 - $180.95 based on my projected dividend increase.
\n
Conclusion
\n
Sell Apple, take your profits now. The super cycle will end. Come back later and buy Apple at a discount when the dividend yield is higher.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple: Take Your Profits Now, Come Back Later
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple: Take Your Profits Now, Come Back Later\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-02 09:29 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\nDividend Yield Theory is a great indicator of overvalued and undervalued shares for healthy companies.\nApple’s current high growth is temporary.\nApple is on its way to becoming a dividend ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AAPL":"苹果"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4443676-apple-take-your-profits-before-its-too-late","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1130492644","content_text":"Summary\n\nDividend Yield Theory is a great indicator of overvalued and undervalued shares for healthy companies.\nApple’s current high growth is temporary.\nApple is on its way to becoming a dividend aristocrat.\n\nChristopher Jue/Getty Images Entertainment\nInvestment Thesis\nInvestors are treating Apple (AAPL) as if it has found a second growth spurt. This would increase their payout ratio to 34% which is a typical payout ratio for cash cow companies.\nThe expected dividend I project is based on the percentage of operating cash flow the dividend takes up. Over the last 3 years, it has ranged from 15% to 18%. I used an estimated $100.15 billion for operating cash flows and at 19% you get the $1.14 dividend.\nSource: Seeking AlphaCash Flow Statement\nLastly it is possible that a dividend yield of less than 1% becomes the norm for Apple. If the current 2021 yield average of 0.63% becomes the new normal, Apple’s share price should rise to $163.49 - $180.95 based on my projected dividend increase.\nConclusion\nSell Apple, take your profits now. The super cycle will end. Come back later and buy Apple at a discount when the dividend yield is higher.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":199,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":805119016,"gmtCreate":1627864969035,"gmtModify":1633755864475,"author":{"id":"3564525745521630","authorId":"3564525745521630","name":"Huat8989","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ae8e0a19c3f1c3e762ed55ffc0e5335","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3564525745521630","authorIdStr":"3564525745521630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Pls go up","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Pls go up","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Pls go up","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3ac7a5ea245fa5a8e13cc5a763cfbeb4","width":"750","height":"1300"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/805119016","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":94,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":802525402,"gmtCreate":1627790041306,"gmtModify":1633756355392,"author":{"id":"3564525745521630","authorId":"3564525745521630","name":"Huat8989","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ae8e0a19c3f1c3e762ed55ffc0e5335","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3564525745521630","authorIdStr":"3564525745521630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"good [Smile] ","listText":"good [Smile] ","text":"good [Smile]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/802525402","repostId":"1142925544","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1142925544","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627787240,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1142925544?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-08-01 11:07","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Investors, Beware!
