But the sample size is only one stock.</p>\n<p>NIO&nbsp;shares (NIO) are down more than 6% in Friday trading after the EV maker&nbsp;reduced guidance&nbsp;for first-quarter deliveries from about 20,250 cars to about 19,500. NIO management cited the chip shortage and is shutting a manufacturing plant for five days starting March 29.</p>\n<p>For Tesla, Wall Street is looking for about 162,000 vehicles delivered in March. That’s down from a peak estimate of about 183,000 vehicles. Analysts seem to be reducing numbers, possibly because of the shortage.</p>\n<p>Tesla delivered about 181,000 vehicles in the&nbsp;fourth quarter. For the full year 2021, analysts are looking for almost 800,000 vehicle deliveries, up about 60% year over year.</p>\n<p>RBC analyst&nbsp;Joe Spak&nbsp;is forecasting 170,000 first-quarter deliveries, up more than 90% year over year. He also forecasts Tesla will make 96,000 cars in California and 74,000 cars in China during the quarter. “Consensus [estimate] looks mostly reasonable,” wrote Spak in a Thursday report. “We do look for updates to see how the semi shortage is impacting&nbsp;Tesla—as it has the rest of the industry.” He sees some additional downside risk to estimates, especially for second-quarter numbers, because of chips.</p>\n<p>Spak rates Tesla stock Hold and has a $725 price target for shares.</p>\n<p>In the case of Tesla stock, the chip shortage has taken a back seat to rising interest rates. Rising rateshit growth stocksin two main ways. For starters, it makes growth more expensive to finance. NIO isn’t profitable yet. High-growth companies generate most of their cash flow far in the future. However, the automakers later said they were not in talks with Apple.\n\nApple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the company’s work in autonomous vehicles, following recent reports that the company is in renewed talks to develop its own car.\n“The autonomy itself is a core technology, in my view. If you sort of step back, the car, in a lot of ways, is a robot. An autonomous car is a robot. And so there’s lots of things you can do with autonomy. And we’ll see what Apple does,” Cook said in an interview released Monday with Kara Swisher on the “Sway” podcast.\n“We investigate so many things internally. Many of them never see the light of day. I’m not saying that one will not,” Cook added.\nWhen asked if Apple was working on a car itself or the technology within a car, Cook declined to comment.\n“We love to integrate hardware, software, and services, and find the intersection points of those because we think that’s where the magic occurs. And so that’s what we love to do. Don’t sell stocks or options on products you don’t own:</b>The traders who lost the most money in GameStop and AMC were those who sold “naked” calls and puts (i.e. they sold options on stocks they didn’t own), or those who sold shares short (again, they sold shares on a stock they didn’t own). When using this extremely risky strategy, you can make a fortune if you’re right. If you’re wrong, the losses can be incalculable. In reality, some unwary traders lost tens of thousands of dollars last week on positions that cost a few thousand dollars. So once again, when you make big money on a trade, take the money as fast as you can — because you may not get the chance again.</p>\n<p><b>7. Stop bragging about how much money you made</b>: Many traders who won big immediately bragged on social media (and to their jealous friends) about how much money they made on this trade. Yet the euphoric feeling they had was temporary. It usually goes away after all the money is gone. The smart (and polite) traders took their gains and kept the win to themselves</p>\n<p><b>8. Use a time stop:</b>Time stops are not well-known or popular, but with fast-moving stocks (or when trading options), they are invaluable. In an extremely fast market, the traditional stop-limit order won’t get filled, as many of those meme-stock traders found out the hard way. It is worth almost as much as all other traditional car makers combined. And when Tesla stock drops, other EV stocks follow because Wall Street often relies on Tesla’s valuation to come up with price targets.</p><p>Monday, shares of three other&nbsp;high-flying&nbsp;EV stocks with significant sales—NIO(NIO),XPeng(XPEV) andLi Auto(LI)—fell roughly 7% to 8%. And since Tesla stock hit its all-time high, NIO, XPeng and&nbsp;Li Auto&nbsp;shares are down roughly 20% on average, just like Tesla.</p><p>It looks as if Tesla is the benchmark for EV stocks just like the&nbsp;S&amp;P 500&nbsp;is the basis for comparison for U.S. stocks. That raises an interesting idea for EV investors: the Tesla version of beta. The beta concept can be thought of, in a sense, as a measure of a stock’s systemic risk. What happens to a market is linked to what happens to an individual stock by that stock’s beta.</p><p>If a stock, for instance, has a beta of 2, it would be expected to rise about 2% if the market rose 1%. Beta values aren’t always above 1. Gold-mining companies in theS&amp;P 500,for instance, have a beta of roughly 0.5, so they don’t rise as fast if the broader index goes up.</p><p>Investors can interpret the gold beta as saying roughly half of what happens to those golds stock is explained by what happens to the S&amp;P 500, and the other half is due to other factors, such as what’s going on with gold prices.</p><p>Beta is just a mathematical calculation. Investors, if they want, can calculate a stock’s beta relative to atmospheric pressure in Central Park. The math has to mean something, though, so no one does that. In the case of EVs, however, the idea of Tesla-as-risk to any EV stock doesn’t feel like a stretch.</p><p>The “Tesla beta” of the three Chinese EV stocks—NIO, XPeng and Li—is about 0.5. That can be interpreted, as with gold stocks, as saying about half of what happens to those three shares is a function of what happens to Tesla stock.</p><p>It’s an interesting idea. But what is happening to Tesla stock anyway?</p><p>It’s all about the potential for higher inflation. Increasing inflation, a growing concern in the market, tends to punish high-growth stocks more than low-growth stocks because of the way financial discount rates work. Most of Tesla’s cash flow comes in future years, and future cash flow is worth less today when interest rates rise.</p><p>Monday, many growth stocks took it on the chin. The&nbsp;Nasdaq Composite,known as the home of many fast-growing tech companies, fell 2.5%. Tesla’s beta value relative to the Nasdaq is about 2, so investors shouldn’t be surprised by a 5% drop in Tesla stock.</p><p>Tesla shares fell 9%, though. The extra 4% remains a mystery. That’s a drop of roughly 21%.It seems odd to say, given that the term is usually applied to broad groups of stocks, but there is a new bear market—a drop of 20% from a high—in Tesla shares.Of course, Tesla is the 800-pound gorilla in the EV sector. It is worth almost as much as all other traditional car makers combined. And when Tesla stock drops, other EV stocks follow because Wall Street often relies on Tesla’s valuation to come up with price targets.Monday, shares of three other high-flying EV stocks with significant sales—NIO(NIO),XPeng(XPEV) andLi Auto(LI)—fell roughly 7% to 8%. And since Tesla stock hit its all-time high, NIO, XPeng and Li Auto shares are down roughly 20% on average, just like Tesla.It looks as if Tesla is the benchmark for EV stocks just like the S&P 500 is the basis for comparison for U.S. stocks. That raises an interesting idea for EV investors: the Tesla version of beta. The beta concept can be thought of, in a sense, as a measure of a stock’s systemic risk. What happens to a market is linked to what happens to an individual stock by that stock’s beta.If a stock, for instance, has a beta of 2, it would be expected to rise about 2% if the market rose 1%. Beta values aren’t always above 1. Gold-mining companies in theS&P 500,for instance, have a beta of roughly 0.5, so they don’t rise as fast if the broader index goes up.Investors can interpret the gold beta as saying roughly half of what happens to those golds stock is explained by what happens to the S&P 500, and the other half is due to other factors, such as what’s going on with gold prices.Beta is just a mathematical calculation. Investors, if they want, can calculate a stock’s beta relative to atmospheric pressure in Central Park. The math has to mean something, though, so no one does that. In the case of EVs, however, the idea of Tesla-as-risk to any EV stock doesn’t feel like a stretch.The “Tesla beta” of the three Chinese EV stocks—NIO, XPeng and Li—is about 0.5. But the sample size is only one stock.</p>\n<p>NIO&nbsp;shares (NIO) are down more than 6% in Friday trading after the EV maker&nbsp;reduced guidance&nbsp;for first-quarter deliveries from about 20,250 cars to about 19,500. NIO management cited the chip shortage and is shutting a manufacturing plant for five days starting March 29.</p>\n<p>For Tesla, Wall Street is looking for about 162,000 vehicles delivered in March. That’s down from a peak estimate of about 183,000 vehicles. Analysts seem to be reducing numbers, possibly because of the shortage.</p>\n<p>Tesla delivered about 181,000 vehicles in the&nbsp;fourth quarter. For the full year 2021, analysts are looking for almost 800,000 vehicle deliveries, up about 60% year over year.</p>\n<p>RBC analyst&nbsp;Joe Spak&nbsp;is forecasting 170,000 first-quarter deliveries, up more than 90% year over year. He also forecasts Tesla will make 96,000 cars in California and 74,000 cars in China during the quarter. “Consensus [estimate] looks mostly reasonable,” wrote Spak in a Thursday report. “We do look for updates to see how the semi shortage is impacting&nbsp;Tesla—as it has the rest of the industry.” He sees some additional downside risk to estimates, especially for second-quarter numbers, because of chips.</p>\n<p>Spak rates Tesla stock Hold and has a $725 price target for shares.</p>\n<p>In the case of Tesla stock, the chip shortage has taken a back seat to rising interest rates. Rising rateshit growth stocksin two main ways. For starters, it makes growth more expensive to finance. NIO isn’t profitable yet. High-growth companies generate most of their cash flow far in the future. earnings per share, or EPS, of 79 cents in the first quarter of 2021, up sharply from 23 cents in the year-ago quarter.</p><p>The consensus revenue forecast for the quarter is at $10.29 billion, up 72% year-over-year.</p><p>In the fourth quarter, Tesla had earned 80 cents per share on a non-GAAP basis on revenues of $10.74 billion.</p><p>Tesla revealed in early April it delivered a record 184,800 vehicles in the first quarter, comprising 182,780 Model 3/Y vehicles and 2,020 Model S/X vehicles. This represents a 109% year-over-year increase and 2.2% sequential growth. Quarterly production was at 180,338.</p><p><b>Focus On Regulatory Credits, Automotive Margins: </b> The focus is likely to be on regulatory credits, which accounted for 4.3% of its revenues in the fourth quarter of 2020. Zero-emission vehicle regulations adopted by several states allow EV manufacturers to&nbsp;earn regulatory credits, which can be monetized by selling to legacy automakers, who are not able to achieve the minimum target set for the proportion of green energy vehicles sold.</p><p>Automotive gross margin slipped to 24.1% in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 27.7% in the previous quarter. It's likely the company could see a further moderation in margins, as production of the higher priced Model S/X vehicles was stalled in the quarter to allow for model refreshes.</p><p><b>View more earnings on TSLA</b></p><p>With competitive pressure intensifying, Tesla could aggressively slash vehicles prices in order to achieve volume production targets, long-time Tesla bear Gordon Johnson said in a note previewing the quarterly results.</p><p>Tesla investors may also be keen to find out more about the company's Bitcoin investment strategy and its decision to allow the use of Bitcoin for vehicle purchases.</p><p><b>Forward Outlook:</b> Tesla is well positioned to capitalize on the opportunity presented by the exponential growth that is anticipated for green energy vehicles.<b> </b>Its&nbsp;Giga Shanghai factory is now churning out both Model S and Model Y vehicles, and more capacity is expected to come on line with the opening of factories in Berlin and Texas.</p><p>Tesla's CFO Zach Kirkhorn said on the earnings call that the company is shooting for a 50% compounded annual growth rate in volume sales&nbsp;and expects to materially exceed the target in 2021.</p><p><b>Stock Take: </b> Tesla's shares, which were flying high until early February, joined the tech sell-off that ensued. From a split-adjusted high of $900.40 on Jan. 25, the stock fell to $539.49 on March 5, a peak-to-trough decline of 40%.</p><p>Although the stock has made good some of the losses since then, it is yet to break above $800 level.</p><p>Tesla holds a several-year lead and is now expanding aggressively into storage, and therefore a premium valuation for its shares is justified, CANACCORD Genuity analyst Jed Dorsheimer said in a recent note. On Thursday, BNY Mellon (BK), the oldest bank in the U.S.,said it will hold and transfer cryptocurrencies for customers. “Growing client demand for digital assets, maturity of advanced solutions, and improving regulatory clarity present a tremendous opportunity for us to extend our current service offerings to this emerging field,” said Roman Regelman, the bank’s CEO of asset servicing and head of digital.</p><p>Mastercard (MA) said on Wednesday that it will let merchants accept some cryptocurrencies through its network later this year. The payments will be converted to traditional money before it enters the companies’ systems.Twitter(TWTR) is also considering a Bitcoin investment. And Square (SQ) has already put some on its balance sheet, as well as given users of its Cash App access to buy the cryptocurrency.</p><p>Why is this happening now? Cryptocurrencies are still not particularly useful outside of a very few cases, such as cross-border transactions. Even there, they haven’t fully taken hold.</p><p>There are at least four big reasons corporations are diving in.</p><p>One is that some company founders believe in Bitcoin. Their excitement about the asset has convinced them that their companies need to be involved, or have cryptocurrency investments, even if Bitcoin isn’t really the core of their operations. That appears to be the case for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, and for a software company calledMicrostrategyand its CEO, Michael Saylor.</p><p>Microstrategy, whose entire market capitalization was below $1 billion early last year, now owns more than $2 billion of Bitcoin, and its market cap is now just under $10 billion. Saylor told<i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;in an interview last yearthat he sees Bitcoin as a hedge against monetary debasement and inflation.</p><p>Square CEO Jack Dorsey ‘s fascination with Bitcoin also likely sped Square’s adoption. But it won’t likely change the way Bitcoin is used. “Tesla sells a half a million cars a year,” he said. “If they sold 4% in Bitcoin, I’d be surprised.” Morehead thinks Bitoin’s growing use for cross-border payments is much more exciting from a practical perspective.</p><p>Other companies are getting into Bitcoin because of customer demand. It could stay out of the industry altogether, but more institutional investors are buying Bitcoin and need somewhere to put it.</p><p>And the infrastructure around Bitcoin has grown, so that it now more closely resembles the systems used in the rest of the world of finance.. Big companies now insure cryptocurrencies or—as in the case ofJPMorgan Chase(JPM)—offer services to cryptocurrency businesses, even if most still don’t hold Bitcoin on their own balance sheets.</p><p>A third reason is increasing government acceptance of the trend. BNY cited greater regulatory clarity around Bitcoin as one reason it is diving in. The U.S. government has taken a mostly laissez-faire approach to regulating digital assets even as many of the illegal activities that cryptocurrency has been associated with in the past have continued. Without at least the tacit approval of regulators, crypto couldn’t have landed on the balance sheets of so many companies.</p><p>A fourth reason cryptocurrencies are gaining hold in corporate boardrooms is that they serve multiple purposes. That gives corporations several different rationales to hold the coins, or offer related services. Cryptocurrencies have the potential to go well beyond Bitcoin’s initial premise as a way to send money without financial intermediaries. In the past week, it has turned into a flood, helping to push the price of Bitcoin to a record of $48,297 on Thursday.The most buzzworthy move came from Tesla (ticker: TSLA), which disclosed on Monday that it hasbought $1.5 billion worth of Bitcointo hold on its balance sheet. The company plans to let consumers use the currency to pay for cars.But Tesla isn’t the only one. On Thursday, BNY Mellon (BK), the oldest bank in the U.S.,said it will hold and transfer cryptocurrencies for customers. “Growing client demand for digital assets, maturity of advanced solutions, and improving regulatory clarity present a tremendous opportunity for us to extend our current service offerings to this emerging field,” said Roman Regelman, the bank’s CEO of asset servicing and head of digital.Mastercard (MA) said on Wednesday that it will let merchants accept some cryptocurrencies through its network later this year. The payments will be converted to traditional money before it enters the companies’ systems.Twitter(TWTR) is also considering a Bitcoin investment. And Square (SQ) has already put some on its balance sheet, as well as given users of its Cash App access to buy the cryptocurrency.Why is this happening now? Cryptocurrencies are still not particularly useful outside of a very few cases, such as cross-border transactions. Even there, they haven’t fully taken hold.There are at least four big reasons corporations are diving in.One is that some company founders believe in Bitcoin. Their excitement about the asset has convinced them that their companies need to be involved, or have cryptocurrency investments, even if Bitcoin isn’t really the core of their operations. That appears to be the case for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, and for a software company calledMicrostrategyand its CEO, Michael Saylor.Microstrategy, whose entire market capitalization was below $1 billion early last year, now owns more than $2 billion of Bitcoin, and its market cap is now just under $10 billion. Saylor toldBarron’s in an interview last yearthat he sees Bitcoin as a hedge against monetary debasement and inflation.Square CEO Jack Dorsey ‘s fascination with Bitcoin also likely sped Square’s adoption. He has spoken about his interest in the currency for years.Tesla’s purchase of Bitcoin is strong marketing for the company and the currency, said Dan Morehead, founder of the crypto hedge fund Pantera Capital. But it won’t likely change the way Bitcoin is used. “Tesla sells a half a million cars a year,” he said. “If they sold 4% in Bitcoin, I’d be surprised.” Morehead thinks Bitoin’s growing use for cross-border payments is much more exciting from a practical perspective.Other companies are getting into Bitcoin because of customer demand. That appears to be the case for BNY Mellon, which is not known for making risky bets on new technologies. It could stay out of the industry altogether, but more institutional investors are buying Bitcoin and need somewhere to put it.And the infrastructure around Bitcoin has grown, so that it now more closely resembles the systems used in the rest of the world of finance.. Big companies now insure cryptocurrencies or—as in the case ofJPMorgan Chase(JPM)—offer services to cryptocurrency businesses, even if most still don’t hold Bitcoin on their own balance sheets.A third reason is increasing government acceptance of the trend. BNY cited greater regulatory clarity around Bitcoin as one reason it is diving in. The U.S. government has taken a mostly laissez-faire approach to regulating digital assets even as many of the illegal activities that cryptocurrency has been associated with in the past have continued. Without at least the tacit approval of regulators, crypto couldn’t have landed on the balance sheets of so many companies.A fourth reason cryptocurrencies are gaining hold in corporate boardrooms is that they serve multiple purposes. That gives corporations several different rationales to hold the coins, or offer related services. Cryptocurrencies have the potential to go well beyond Bitcoin’s initial premise as a way to send money without financial intermediaries. So-called stablecoins, whose value is meant to track fiat currencies, could allow for faster transactions for some kinds of financial services, for instance.Visa(V) andMasterCardseem like the last places in the world that Bitcoin would take hold given that Bitcoin was created to eliminate the middlemen in finance. Few companies fill the role of middleman as perfectly as the credit-card processors. Visa, however, thinks that cryptocurrencies are useful for many other purposes, and its trusted brand makes it an important player, according to Cuy Sheffield, head of crypto at the company.“We’ve seen growing demand from clients across the world that want to be able to plug in and use these networks, but they want a global, neutral, trusted brand, to help them be able to do that,” Sheffield said in an interview.
