Other countries are cracking down on crypto transactions, mining, and exchanges, indicating that El Salvador may be an outlier for now.</p>\n<p>Crypto watchers are also blaming technical factors for the market downturn. Assuming prices don’t suddenly surge, Bitcoin is now in for “outside-down” day, says Katie Stockton, founder and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies, a crypto-trading research firm. The means Bitcoin is trading in a wider range and headed for a lower close than yesterday (assuming a 5 p.m. cutoff, though it trades 24 hours).</p>\n<p>“The implications are for additional consolidation,” she says. As the company grows its offering, it will be able to compete head-to-head with other “online program management” (OPM) providers, such as 2U(NASDAQ:TWOU), which is already publicly traded, and Noodle Partners.</p><p>Ng’sshareholder letter in the S-1articulated clearly just what the company is about:</p><blockquote>“We believe that education is the source of human progress. In today’s economy in which the skills needed to succeed are rapidly evolving, education is becoming more important than ever. As automation and digital disruption are poised to replace unprecedented numbers of jobs worldwide, giving workers the opportunity to upskill and reskill will be crucial to raising global living standards and increasing social equity. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”</blockquote><p>The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. To date, the company has raised $464 million in venture capital, most recently,$130 million in a Series F roundlast July. Coursera’s biggest institutional shareholders are New Enterprise Associates (18.3% of company stock), G Squared (15.9%) and Kleiner Perkins (9.2%).</p><p><b>Operating Results</b></p><p>The company earned $293 million in revenues for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2020, up 59% from 2019. Net losses widened by about $20 million year-on-year, reaching $66.8 million in 2020. Revenues shot up as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on traditional education. In tandem with rising demand, operating costs associated with the company’s services rose, largely driven by the freemium content and marketing expenses. Coursera added over 12,000 new degree learners across the two years ended December 31, 2020 at an average acquisition cost of just below $2,000. The number of registered users rose by 65% year-on-year in 2020. Coursera’s accumulated deficit since its founding stood at $343.6 million as of December 31, 2020. At the start of the pandemic, Coursera made the program free to tertiary institutions until Sept. 30, 2020. Over 4,000 tertiary institutions from across the world signed up for the program, which, according to the company’s S-1 filing, makes it, “one of our fastest growing offerings”. As of December 31, 2020, over 130 tertiary institutions were paying for it.</p><p>At this point, it is hard to predict what the end of the pandemic would have on the company’s operating results.</p><p><b>The Strategy and Market Opportunity</b></p><p>Coursera is one of the most disruptive firms in the world. It has a flywheel approach to value creation, with significant price-to-cost advantages versus its competition. The company reported that about half of its new degree students in 2020 had been previously registered with Coursera and that its average student acquisition cost was less than $2,000. Its average student acquisition cost is lower than the industry standard. The edu-tech platform is able to efficiently acquire learners at scale because of the huge number of free, high-quality courses that it offers in partnership with top educational institutions and corporations; its ability to personalize content based on its wealth of data; the strength of word-of-mouth promotion by learners; the profitability of its affiliate paid marketing channel.</p><p>The platform offers a number of education tracks, for example:</p><ul><li>Specializations: A learner can pay between $39 and $99 a month for job-specific content across over 500 categories.</li><li>MasterTrack Certificates: For a quarter to a year, a learner can earn a certificate issued by a university-issued certificate. Prices range from $2,000 to $6,000.</li><li>Bachelor’s or Master’s Degrees: Fees range from $9,000 to $45,000.</li><li>Coursera for Enterprise: Through this platform, businesses, educational institutions and governments can deploy content to their learners.</li></ul><p>In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Coursera partnered with over 330 government agencies across 30 U.S. states and cities and 70 countries as part of itsCoursera Workforce Recovery Initiative, which gave governments the chance to offer unemployed workers free access to thousands of business, data science, and technology courses from companies such as Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)and Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL).</p><p>The company has 77 million registered learners, as well as over 2,000 businesses (including 25% of Fortune 500 companies) and 100 government agencies who paid for its enterprise offerings. The majority of its revenue (51%) was earned outside of the United States. Converting only a fraction of its 77 million registered users into paid users would change the economics of customer acquisition. The Covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated secular trends towards the use of technology in education.</p><p>The size of the addressable market is massive and it’s easy to see why.An August 2020 study by the United Nationsdemonstrates the degree of disruption brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic: of the 1.6 billion students in 190 countries covered in the report, or 94% of the world’s students, were prevented from going to school because of Covid-19 pandemic related school closures.</p><p>In 2017, the World Bank indicated thatof the 200 million college students in the world, many do not have job-specific skills.</p><p>The Covid-19 pandemic and prior secular trends suggest that the future of education is in blended classrooms, job-specific education and continuous, lifelong education. Online learning platforms like Coursera will be the primary means through which educational content is delivered.</p><p>Globally, spending on higher education in 2019 was $2.2 trillion,according to HolonIQ. Spending on online degrees was $36 billion and is predicted to reach $74 billion by 2025.</p><p>With a huge, existing learner base; a strong brand; and the significant advantages detailed above, Coursera is likely to grab a significant amount of the market’s growth. Of thescenarios for the future of education, it seems that Coursera will continue to grow.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>Coursera seems poised to meet the challenges of a changing education landscape. With its vast, existing user base, its flywheel model, its competitive advantages, and its existence in a huge and growing addressable market, the company is likely to do very well. The company’s value proposition is compelling. However, long run success does not equate to a good investment in the short run. Online education will play a critical role, enabling anyone, anywhere, to gain the valuable skills they need to earn a living in an increasingly digital economy.”The filing lists Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup as underwriters. The number of shares and the price range of the proposed offering are yet to be determined.According to PitchBook data, Coursera’s most recent valuation in the private markets was $2.5 billion. Companies cannot deliver impressive growth on a budget.</p>\n<p>The better gauge to use is the price-to-sales, and at 22 it is reasonable. This is in line with&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) and cheaper than&nbsp;<b>Zoom</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>ZM</u></b>) to use two other growers. ROKU P/S is triple&nbsp;<b>Netflix</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<b><u>NFLX</u></b>) and quadruple that of&nbsp;<b>Disney</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:<b><u>DIS</u></b>). Nevertheless it is not a flagrant reason to sell it. This is also a way to get bullish the stock but leave room for error.</p>\n<p>An investor can sell the January 2022 ROKU $220 put to be bullish the stock. This trade would not even need a rally to win. In fact, the stock can fall almost 40% and they can still break even. If the stock falls below $220 then they could own the shares there.</p>\n<p>Big moves in stocks usually come from dislocations between reality and expectations. I don’t think there is such a scenario here. It’s a momentum stock but not teetering on disaster. What organizers called the \"largest incentive prize in history\" will last for four years through Earth Day, 2025.</p>\n<p>Carbon capture and storage has drawn growing interest as a warming climate has melted glaciers, intensified tropical storms and resulted in \"sunny day flooding\" of more and more coastal areas. While countries are working to reduce emissions, scientists say carbon removal technology will also be crucial to the goal of getting emissions to net zero by 2050.</p>\n<p>Carbon capture projects have already drawn backing from Silicon Valley startups aiming for a technological solution to climate change, public officials worried about the slow pace of cutting emissions, and emitters including oil companies seeking to offset their climate impacts.</p>\n<p>The technology is not yet commercially viable. Removing carbon costs more than $300 per metric tonne in a world that each year emits greenhouse gases equivalent to about 50 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide. By 2050, some 10 billion tonnes of carbon capture may be needed, by some estimates.</p>\n<p>Musk's $100 million XPRIZE Carbon Removal is aimed at finding a viable solution for taking 1,000 tonnes out of the atmosphere annually, with potential to scale up dramatically.</p>\n<p>Musk has built a reputation as an industrialist focused on environmentalism, turning electric car maker Tesla into the world's most valuable vehicle company and expanding into solar power so customers can charge their rides carbon-free.</p>\n<p>Contest entrants should \"show a sustainable path to achieving low cost at gigatonne scale,\" organizers XPRIZE has said on its website.</p>\n<p>There are plenty of Silicon Valley startups eager to compete. March but declining and trading in a choppy range since then.\nBank of America analyst Geoff Meacham identified three companies that could get a positive reception at the meeting.\nThe The American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting will be virtual for a second year, and runs from from June 4 to June 8. Meacham said it is important but ASCO may not provide the pop to stocks it did in other years.\n“ASCO was by far and away the biggest medical conference of the year, and people looked forward to that. And you would have company presentations in front of 30,000 oncologists,” he said. “There would be hundreds of Wall Streeters. You could get a very good handle on what was the buzz of the meeting. SInce it’s virtual, it doesn’t have as much of its charm.”\nBut Meacham said ASCO could still be positive. “You have data that’s brand new and that could lead to approvals and some very good products,” he said.\nMeacham said he’s still positive on biotech despite its lackluster performance. He especially likes mid-cap biotech.\n“We’ve been pretty positive on the group. Recognizing that drug pricing has been a little bit of a cloud over the past couple of years, and 2021 is no different,” said Meacham. “But when you look at the pipeline, the midcap biotech pipeline looks fantastic.”\nThe pipeline in big pharma is got but not as robust. “For the most part, it’s singles and doubles. But not surprisingly, midcap biotech has some home run potential but with more risk. That’s what drives the industry - the innovation and new therapies - and that’s why we’re still positive.”\n\nThe IBB iShares NASDAQ Biotech ETF gained 0.4% last week, but it is up just 0.3% year-to-date. The widely followed IBB was down 1.7% for the month of May.\nMeacham identified three companies that could get a positive reception at the ASCO meeting. Bank of America has a buy rating on all of them. One of those is big pharma Bristol-Myers Squibb.\n“Bristol is probably one of the winners,” he said. The company’s anti-LAG-3 antibody relatlimab melanoma treatment has been in development and there will be data from a large phase 3 trial. He said the product was used with its Opdivo, and could have a better safety profile than the current treatment of Opdivo combined with Yervoy. He does expect Opdivo and Yervoy to maintain the lead share of the market going forward.\nBig cap biotech Amgen is presenting on its lung cancer drug Lumakras, which received Food and Drug Administration approval Friday. The drug was approved to treat lung cancer patients with a genetic mutation known as KRAS. The approval came sooner than expected and sent Amgen shares up more than 1.1% Friday.\nHe said it could be combined with other therapy, like Opdivo. “That two drug combination could be really profound,” he said.\nBiotech company Seagen is going to present on its Padcev treatment for bladder and kidney cancer, launched last year. “This is an update of existing data,” he said. (PLUG) rallied hard following the restatements of its financial accounts of the last three years. As expected, this did not have any material effects on sales and cash balance, but it does bring to the surface the lackluster performance in terms of profit margins. Having said this, with plenty of cash in hand, I think Plug can increase its profitability by pursuing growth in higher-margin areas and reducing costs through economies of scale and integration.</p>\n<p><b>The Restatements</b></p>\n<p>The much-awaited financial restatements finally came out on Friday the 14th of May. Although it hasn't actually changed at all, let's start by reviewing the state of Plug's balance sheet.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd5bfd2169c22ff788f3ad3a7db9752b\" tg-width=\"1266\" tg-height=\"1272\"><span>Source:10-K</span></p>\n<p>As of 2020, Plug Power has $1.3 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Total assets equal $2.25 billion, which triples total liabilities. In terms of financial health, the company has around 47% of Debt to Equity. Plug has plenty of cash to cover immediate liabilities, but this is to be expected of a company that can't rely on its revenues yet. Speaking of which, let's move on to the income statement:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9a59484d85d9f6537476ed5571f90e33\" tg-width=\"1230\" tg-height=\"1262\"><span>Source:10-K</span></p>\n<p>Starting with revenue, \"sales of fuel cell systems and related infrastructure\", which is the main driver of revenues, came in at a negative $94.295 million. This can be attributed to the costs associated with the Amazon.com(NASDAQ:AMZN)Warrants. In fact, the only segment that saw actual growth was Power Purchase Agreements.</p>\n<p>The most significant changes happened in cost of revenues and R&amp;D. Basically, over the past 3 years Plug has overstated its R&amp;D expenses to the tune of $63 million. Moving these to costs of revenues shrinks the company's gross margins.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f111fb37cf5a11e4ad3d7dd639ac740a\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"765\"><span>Source:10-K</span></p>\n<p>Above we can see what the actual Gross Profit/Loss and Gross Margin has been in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Due in large part to the Amazon and Walmart Inc.(NYSE:WMT)warrants, Plug lost almost half a billion dollars in 2020. However, in 2019 the company did achieve a 34.7% gross margin in its main segment, with an overall gross margin of 4.6%. This is significantly lower than what theprevious 10-Kshowed, a margin of 12.1% in 2019 and 1.5% in 2018.</p>\n<p>However, it is worth mentioning that the margin for \"sales of fuel cell systems and related infrastructure\", which accounted in 2019 for around ⅔ of revenues, was largely unchanged, going from 35.4% to 34.7%. The change was also smaller than 1% in 2018.</p>\n<p>The bottom line is, that while Plug Power remains in a strong financial position and has some good growth prospects, it has misled investors over its profitability. The company now sets a target of 20% EBITDA margin by 2024. But can management deliver?</p>\n<p><b>The Path to Profitability</b></p>\n<p>Plug Power has, for the most part, realized its growth objectives, but in doing so, it has sacrificed profitability. Two of its main clients, Walmart and Amazon have benefitted from very favorable terms in their service contracts. In other words, while Plug makes some decent money on the sale of its fuel cells, it is still losing money in the servicing of this technology. However, the company is now taking the right steps in the right direction.</p>\n<p>Firstly, the company is moving towards vertically integrating its operations, which could help reduce costs and increase synergies. We can find a couple of examples of this in the most recent moves Plug has made through Joint Ventures. Through itspartnership with AccionaS.A. (OTCPK:ACXIF), Plug Power will now have exposure to the actual production of green hydrogen. Plug also entered a JV with SK group to build a Gigafactory in South Korea.</p>\n<p>These moves don't only help Plug by vertically integrating it, but also give it exposure to the production of green energy and the benefits associated with it, namely government grants. As I discussed in myprevious article on Plug,both the US and Europe are pouring money into hydrogen.</p>\n<p>Another boon to profitability will be the expiry of the current contracts the company has with Amazon and Walmart. For starters, the 10-K already makes a point of saying that no more significant costs should come from the Amazon warrants, which have been mostly exercised. On top of that, Plug is now in a better situation to negotiate more favorable deals going forward.</p>\n<p>To sum up, I am encouraged by Plug's sales of fuel cells, which even after the restatements remains a profitable segment. On top of that, the overhang of the Amazon and Walmart warrants will be ending soon, and finally, we have Plug increasing its exposure to hydrogen production plus the potential tailwind that government aid could give to Plug's margins.</p>\n<p>With a strong balance sheet, concrete future growth initiatives, and an encouraging political landscape, it doesn't seem surprising that institutions have been piling back into the stock. According tofintel.io, over 70% of shares are now held by institutions.</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>An investment in Plug Power is not without risks, though some of these have dissipated following the latest restatements. Most notably, the viability of hydrogen technology remains a mystery. I think that green and blue hydrogen can work well in the transition towards a green economy, and the fact that one of the largest companies in the world (Amazon), already uses it is proof that it is viable on some level. However, hydrogen has to compete with other sources of energy, be it renewables like solar, or less carbon-intensive ones like nuclear or natural gas.</p>\n<p>On a more immediate front, the company is facing ashareholder lawsuit, as pointed out by fellow SA contributor InvestOhTrader. However, it seems unlikely that this will amount to much, since proving any wrongdoing will be hard. Furthermore, costs related to this should be covered by insurance.</p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>Plug Power is certainly a divisive company. It's possible to see it as a potential multi-bagger that will revolutionize the future of energy. However, given its past and recent history, I fully understand skeptical investors and distrust management. Plug is not for everyone, but I see compelling reasons to invest a conservative in this company. (PLUG) rallied hard following the restatements of its financial accounts of the last three years. As expected, this did not have any material effects on sales and cash balance, but it does bring to the surface the lackluster performance in terms of profit margins. Having said this, with plenty of cash in hand, I think Plug can increase its profitability by pursuing growth in higher-margin areas and reducing costs through economies of scale and integration.\nThe Restatements\nThe much-awaited financial restatements finally came out on Friday the 14th of May. Although it hasn't actually changed at all, let's start by reviewing the state of Plug's balance sheet.\nSource:10-K\nAs of 2020, Plug Power has $1.3 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Total assets equal $2.25 billion, which triples total liabilities. In terms of financial health, the company has around 47% of Debt to Equity. Plug has plenty of cash to cover immediate liabilities, but this is to be expected of a company that can't rely on its revenues yet. Speaking of which, let's move on to the income statement:\nSource:10-K\nStarting with revenue, \"sales of fuel cell systems and related infrastructure\", which is the main driver of revenues, came in at a negative $94.295 million. This can be attributed to the costs associated with the Amazon.com(NASDAQ:AMZN)Warrants. In fact, the only segment that saw actual growth was Power Purchase Agreements.\nThe most significant changes happened in cost of revenues and R&D. Basically, over the past 3 years Plug has overstated its R&D expenses to the tune of $63 million. Moving these to costs of revenues shrinks the company's gross margins.\nSource:10-K\nAbove we can see what the actual Gross Profit/Loss and Gross Margin has been in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Due in large part to the Amazon and Walmart Inc.(NYSE:WMT)warrants, Plug lost almost half a billion dollars in 2020. However, in 2019 the company did achieve a 34.7% gross margin in its main segment, with an overall gross margin of 4.6%. This is significantly lower than what theprevious 10-Kshowed, a margin of 12.1% in 2019 and 1.5% in 2018.\nHowever, it is worth mentioning that the margin for \"sales of fuel cell systems and related infrastructure\", which accounted in 2019 for around ⅔ of revenues, was largely unchanged, going from 35.4% to 34.7%. The change was also smaller than 1% in 2018.\nThe bottom line is, that while Plug Power remains in a strong financial position and has some good growth prospects, it has misled investors over its profitability. The company now sets a target of 20% EBITDA margin by 2024. But can management deliver?\nThe Path to Profitability\nPlug Power has, for the most part, realized its growth objectives, but in doing so, it has sacrificed profitability. Two of its main clients, Walmart and Amazon have benefitted from very favorable terms in their service contracts. In other words, while Plug makes some decent money on the sale of its fuel cells, it is still losing money in the servicing of this technology. However, the company is now taking the right steps in the right direction.\nFirstly, the company is moving towards vertically integrating its operations, which could help reduce costs and increase synergies. We can find a couple of examples of this in the most recent moves Plug has made through Joint Ventures. Through itspartnership with AccionaS.A. (OTCPK:ACXIF), Plug Power will now have exposure to the actual production of green hydrogen. Plug also entered a JV with SK group to build a Gigafactory in South Korea.\nThese moves don't only help Plug by vertically integrating it, but also give it exposure to the production of green energy and the benefits associated with it, namely government grants. As I discussed in myprevious article on Plug,both the US and Europe are pouring money into hydrogen.\nAnother boon to profitability will be the expiry of the current contracts the company has with Amazon and Walmart. For starters, the 10-K already makes a point of saying that no more significant costs should come from the Amazon warrants, which have been mostly exercised. On top of that, Plug is now in a better situation to negotiate more favorable deals going forward.\nTo sum up, I am encouraged by Plug's sales of fuel cells, which even after the restatements remains a profitable segment. On top of that, the overhang of the Amazon and Walmart warrants will be ending soon, and finally, we have Plug increasing its exposure to hydrogen production plus the potential tailwind that government aid could give to Plug's margins.\nWith a strong balance sheet, concrete future growth initiatives, and an encouraging political landscape, it doesn't seem surprising that institutions have been piling back into the stock. According tofintel.io, over 70% of shares are now held by institutions.\nRisks\nAn investment in Plug Power is not without risks, though some of these have dissipated following the latest restatements. Most notably, the viability of hydrogen technology remains a mystery. I think that green and blue hydrogen can work well in the transition towards a green economy, and the fact that one of the largest companies in the world (Amazon), already uses it is proof that it is viable on some level. However, hydrogen has to compete with other sources of energy, be it renewables like solar, or less carbon-intensive ones like nuclear or natural gas.\nOn a more immediate front, the company is facing ashareholder lawsuit, as pointed out by fellow SA contributor InvestOhTrader. However, it seems unlikely that this will amount to much, since proving any wrongdoing will be hard. Furthermore, costs related to this should be covered by insurance.\nTakeaway\nPlug Power is certainly a divisive company. It's possible to see it as a potential multi-bagger that will revolutionize the future of energy. However, given its past and recent history, I fully understand skeptical investors and distrust management. Plug is not for everyone, but I see compelling reasons to invest a conservative in this company.
