But several industry analysts questioned whether the \"meme\" stock trend will carry Reddit's stock over the long term.</p>\n<p>Wedbush internet securities analyst Ygal Arounian said it was unclear whether the influx of Reddit users, who were drawn to the company's forums to rally around buying certain stocks, including GameStop's shares in January, would be enough to support further growth at the company. \"The question is, was that lift sustainable?\" he said.</p>\n<p>A Reddit spokesperson declined to respond to industry analysts' skepticism of its public company's growth prospects, citing the \"quiet period\" that accompanies the filing of paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission.</p>\n<p>At a $15 billion valuation, Reddit would be valued at 20-times revenue, or three times the multiple of Facebook-owner <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a>, according to Breakingviews.</p>\n<p>That is despite the 16-year-old company significantly trailing Facebook and other major social media companies in users and revenue.</p>\n<p>Reddit brought in $100 million in advertising revenue in the second quarter of this year, according to the company. Reddit's users have also been critical of the platform carrying too much advertising.</p>\n<p>Reddit has taken a more hands-off approach to content moderation compared to its bigger rivals, counting on its loyal communities to police themselves. But it's now a memory handing out an expensive lesson ","content":"<p>The meme stock rally was fun while it lasted. But it's now a memory handing out an expensive lesson as it increasingly falls apart versus the S&P 500.</p>\n<p>A more than monthlong slide in meme stocks erased all aggregate gains by pounding online Reddit traders' favorites, like <b>AMC Entertainment</b>(AMC),<b>GameStop</b>(GME),<b>Peloton Interactive</b>(PTON) and the direct player <b>Robinhood Markets</b>(HOOD). Those are among the hardest hit, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSmith. The analysis looks at the 25 most-popular stocks with meme traders plus those most highly shorted compiled by Solactive for the new Solactive Roundhill Meme Stock ETF.</p>\n<p><b>Game Over For Meme Stocks</b></p>\n<p>But now the selling has completely wiped out the aggregate gains from the entire phenomenon this year. And it continued on Monday. Former meme darling GameStop (GME), which kicked off the Reddit trading rage, dropped more than 13% Monday on concerns of the company's future.</p>\n<p>These 25 stocks, on average, are down 27% in just a month. And that adds up to a painful $80 billion loss on them in just four weeks. In comparison, the S&P 500 has been under pressure, too, but it's up in a month. It's the first time many of the speculators playing these risky stocks, many with no fundamentals, have seen losses.</p>\n<p>\"We have many investors who don't have real depth and experience in the markets right now and, using the analogy of going to a casino, the worst thing that can happen is that the first time you go, you win big,\" said Eben Burr, president of $2.2 billion in assets advisory Toews. \"Then you keep going back and may get reckless — you're not as skilled as you believe and the house eventually wins. Meme stocks have to be seen as a very speculative move.\"</p>\n<p><b>Assessing Brutal Meme Stock Damage</b></p>\n<p>Meme stock pain is reaching levels their fans haven't seen before.</p>\n<p>A custom market-cap weighted index of the 25 stocks topped out on Jan. 27. And since then it has collapsed more than 22%. Much of that pain has happened in just the last four weeks, with the index dropping roughly 20% in that time.</p>\n<p>Some of the individual stocks have done much more poorly.Robinhood is among the worst of them all, plunging 44% in just a month. That loss alone cost investors more than $13 billion in just a month.</p>\n<p>GameStop, too, is gobbling up speculators' quarters fast. The original meme stoc kis down 32% in a month, sucking more than $4.8 billion out of investors' portfolios. And it lost more than half its value from the meme stock high.</p>\n<p><b>What's Next For Meme Stocks Vs. The S&P 500?</b></p>\n<p>Fans of meme stocks might point out they're still up for the year. That's true. But they're lagging the S&P 500 now.</p>\n<p>Take theater chain AMC Entertainment. It's still up huge for the year and it's even up 16% from the meme peak. But in just one month shares are down more than 40% to 23.17. That's much worse than the S&P 500's 0.2% rise in that time.</p>\n<p>And that's the point. Meme stocks are now lagging the market, even if you include gains from the start of the year. The index of the 25 meme stocks is now flat for the year. Had you just bought the S&P 500, you'd be up much more than that — 25%. And that doesn't even include the S&P 500's 1.4% dividend yield. Investors generally do much better by following sound investing rules.</p>\n<p>Now that's a tough lesson to take.</p>\n<p><b>Meme Stocks Are Crashing</b></p>\n<p><i>All but one of the 25 top meme stocks dropped in the past month</i></p>\n<table>\n <thead>\n <tr>\n <th>Company</th>\n <th>Symbol</th>\n <th>1-mo. % ch.</th>\n <th>Market value change one month ($ millions)</th>\n </tr>\n </thead>\n <tbody>\n <tr>\n <td>Marathon Digital</td>\n <td>(MARA)</td>\n <td>-51.2%</td>\n <td>-$3,977.8</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Riot Blockchain</td>\n <td>(RIOT)</td>\n <td>-44.9%</td>\n <td>-$1,400.1</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Robinhood Markets</td>\n <td>(HOOD)</td>\n <td>-44.2%</td>\n <td>-$13,376.8</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Upstart Holdings</td>\n <td>(UPST)</td>\n <td>-42.7%</td>\n <td>-$9,252.6</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>AMC Entertainment</td>\n <td>(AMC)</td>\n <td>-42.1%</td>\n <td>-$8,649.3</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Clover Health Investments</td>\n <td>(CLOV)</td>\n <td>-40.7%</td>\n <td>-$1,004.3</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Sundial Growers</td>\n <td>(SNDL)</td>\n <td>-37.8%</td>\n <td>-$714.9</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>ContextLogic</td>\n <td>(WISH)</td>\n <td>-36.7%</td>\n <td>-$1,275.6</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>SoFi Technologies</td>\n <td>(SOFI)</td>\n <td>-35.8%</td>\n <td>-$6,548.0</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Tilray</td>\n <td>(TLRY)</td>\n <td>-35.6%</td>\n <td>-$2,039.9</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Cassava Sciences</td>\n <td>(SAVA)</td>\n <td>-34.8%</td>\n <td>-$957.5</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>GameStop</td>\n <td>(GME)</td>\n <td>-32.1%</td>\n <td>-$4,860.4</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>fuboTV</td>\n <td>(FUBO)</td>\n <td>-30.0%</td>\n <td>-$1,062.8</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>DraftKings</td>\n <td>(DKNG)</td>\n <td>-28.4%</td>\n <td>-$4,680.3</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Best Buy</td>\n <td>(BBY)</td>\n <td>-25.8%</td>\n <td>-$9,152.5</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Beyond Meat</td>\n <td>(BYND)</td>\n <td>-25.3%</td>\n <td>-$1,363.2</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Virgin Galactic</td>\n <td>(SPCE)</td>\n <td>-22.7%</td>\n <td>-$1,126.2</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Penn National Gaming</td>\n <td>(PENN)</td>\n <td>-17.9%</td>\n <td>-$1,766.1</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Rush Street Interactive</td>\n <td>(RSI)</td>\n <td>-17.0%</td>\n <td>-$199.1</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Peloton Interactive</td>\n <td>(PTON)</td>\n <td>-16.7%</td>\n <td>-$1,370.1</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Lucid Group</td>\n <td>(LCID)</td>\n <td>-10.4%</td>\n <td>-$6,302.4</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Cleveland-Cliffs</td>\n <td>(CLF)</td>\n <td>-9.5%</td>\n <td>-$1,055.2</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Digital World Acquisition</td>\n <td>(DWAC)</td>\n <td>-7.2%</td>\n <td>-$171.7</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>ZIM Integrated Shipping</td>\n <td>(ZIM)</td>\n <td>-0.2%</td>\n <td>-$9.5</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>Roblox</td>\n <td>(RBLX)</td>\n <td>3.7%</td>\n <td>$2,303.8</td>\n </tr>\n <tr>\n <td>SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust</td>\n <td>(SPY)</td>\n <td>0.2%</td>\n </tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<p>Sources: IBD, S&P Global Market Intelligence</p>","source":"lsy1610612141385","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; But it's now a memory handing out an expensive lesson as it increasingly falls apart versus the S&P 500.\nA more than monthlong slide in meme stocks erased all aggregate gains by pounding online Reddit traders' favorites, like AMC Entertainment(AMC),GameStop(GME),Peloton Interactive(PTON) and the direct player Robinhood Markets(HOOD). Those are among the hardest hit, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSmith. The analysis looks at the 25 most-popular stocks with meme traders plus those most highly shorted compiled by Solactive for the new Solactive Roundhill Meme Stock ETF.\nGame Over For Meme Stocks\nBut now the selling has completely wiped out the aggregate gains from the entire phenomenon this year. And it continued on Monday. Former meme darling GameStop (GME), which kicked off the Reddit trading rage, dropped more than 13% Monday on concerns of the company's future.\nThese 25 stocks, on average, are down 27% in just a month. And that adds up to a painful $80 billion loss on them in just four weeks. In comparison, the S&P 500 has been under pressure, too, but it's up in a month. It's the first time many of the speculators playing these risky stocks, many with no fundamentals, have seen losses.\n\"We have many investors who don't have real depth and experience in the markets right now and, using the analogy of going to a casino, the worst thing that can happen is that the first time you go, you win big,\" said Eben Burr, president of $2.2 billion in assets advisory Toews. \"Then you keep going back and may get reckless — you're not as skilled as you believe and the house eventually wins. Meme stocks have to be seen as a very speculative move.\"\nAssessing Brutal Meme Stock Damage\nMeme stock pain is reaching levels their fans haven't seen before.\nA custom market-cap weighted index of the 25 stocks topped out on Jan. 27. And since then it has collapsed more than 22%. Much of that pain has happened in just the last four weeks, with the index dropping roughly 20% in that time.\nSome of the individual stocks have done much more poorly.Robinhood is among the worst of them all, plunging 44% in just a month. That loss alone cost investors more than $13 billion in just a month.\nGameStop, too, is gobbling up speculators' quarters fast. The original meme stoc kis down 32% in a month, sucking more than $4.8 billion out of investors' portfolios. And it lost more than half its value from the meme stock high.\nWhat's Next For Meme Stocks Vs. The S&P 500?\nFans of meme stocks might point out they're still up for the year. That's true. But they're lagging the S&P 500 now.\nTake theater chain AMC Entertainment. It's still up huge for the year and it's even up 16% from the meme peak. But in just one month shares are down more than 40% to 23.17. That's much worse than the S&P 500's 0.2% rise in that time.\nAnd that's the point. Investors generally do much better by following sound investing rules.\nNow that's a tough lesson to take.\nMeme Stocks Are Crashing\nAll but one of the 25 top meme stocks dropped in the past month\n\n\n\nCompany\nSymbol\n1-mo. % ch.\nMarket value change one month ($ millions)\n\n\n\n\nMarathon Digital\n(MARA)\n-51.2%\n-$3,977.8\n\n\nRiot Blockchain\n(RIOT)\n-44.9%\n-$1,400.1\n\n\nRobinhood Markets\n(HOOD)\n-44.2%\n-$13,376.8\n\n\nUpstart Holdings\n(UPST)\n-42.7%\n-$9,252.6\n\n\nAMC Entertainment\n(AMC)\n-42.1%\n-$8,649.3\n\n\nClover Health Investments\n(CLOV)\n-40.7%\n-$1,004.3\n\n\nSundial Growers\n(SNDL)\n-37.8%\n-$714.9\n\n\nContextLogic\n(WISH)\n-36.7%\n-$1,275.6\n\n\nSoFi Technologies\n(SOFI)\n-35.8%\n-$6,548.0\n\n\nTilray\n(TLRY)\n-35.6%\n-$2,039.9\n\n\nCassava Sciences\n(SAVA)\n-34.8%\n-$957.5\n\n\nGameStop\n(GME)\n-32.1%\n-$4,860.4\n\n\nfuboTV\n(FUBO)\n-30.0%\n-$1,062.8\n\n\nDraftKings\n(DKNG)\n-28.4%\n-$4,680.3\n\n\nBest Buy\n(BBY)\n-25.8%\n-$9,152.5\n\n\nBeyond Meat\n(BYND)\n-25.3%\n-$1,363.2\n\n\nVirgin Galactic\n(SPCE)\n-22.7%\n-$1,126.2\n\n\nPenn National Gaming\n(PENN)\n-17.9%\n-$1,766.1\n\n\nRush Street Interactive\n(RSI)\n-17.0%\n-$199.1\n\n\nPeloton Interactive\n(PTON)\n-16.7%\n-$1,370.1\n\n\nLucid Group\n(LCID)\n-10.4%\n-$6,302.4\n\n\nCleveland-Cliffs\n(CLF)\n-9.5%\n-$1,055.2\n\n\nDigital World Acquisition\n(DWAC)\n-7.2%\n-$171.7\n\n\nZIM Integrated Shipping\n(ZIM)\n-0.2%\n-$9.5\n\n\nRoblox\n(RBLX)\n3.7%\n$2,303.8\n\n\nSPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust\n(SPY)\n0.2%\n\n\n\nSources: IBD, S&P Global Market Intelligence","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":559,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":607343276,"gmtCreate":1639493282932,"gmtModify":1639493283093,"author":{"id":"3555192598177225","authorId":"3555192598177225","name":"Jj1985","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d52a052d654dfb301401489286662068","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMC\">$AMC Entertainment(AMC)$</a> siao... The uproar of the retail market that sent the stock thousands of percent higher showed that the times are changing. Institutions cannot discount the retail market strength or ability to execute coordinated pressure.</p>\n<p>However, it is hard to get on the positive side of this business regardless of whether we observe the internal or external environment.</p>\n<p>The company remains heavily indebted, with over US$11b in long-term liabilities. With the cash and its equivalents currently at US$1.6b, an improved cash burn from Q2 to Q3 is a rare positive, as it means that there is no need for new debt or dilution in the near future.</p>\n<p>Yet, even with 100% theaters open, the revenue is 50% compared to Q3 19, and 2 years ago – even with double the attendance, the company still posted -US$0.53 earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, the external environment is clearly negative. The market shifted to entertainment at demand – with competitors like Disney, Netflix, ViacomCBS, or Discovery engaged in trench warfare for every subscriber.</p>\n<h3>The Insiders Aren't Believers</h3>\n<p>If we look at the data, insiders exclusively sold shares of AMC in recent months. Just days ago, CEO Adam Aron sold additional 312,500 shares, leaving him with less than 100,000 shares in direct beneficial ownership. Additionally, CFO Sean Goodman sold all of his remaining stake, 18,316 shares, leaving him with no direct ownership of the company.</p>\n<p>While both executives have more equity grants down the road, as structured in their compensation packages, these decisions provide little support for the company's current valuation.</p>\n<p><span>After the CEO, Mr.Aron, who just sold US$9.65m in shares, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Senior <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/VP..UK\">VP</a> & Chief Human Resources Officer, Carla Chavarria, sold US$2.5m worth of shares at US$62.67 per share.</span></p>\n<p><span>In the last year, insiders in AMC Entertainment Holdings didn't buy any shares. Gentrifying the company by raising its value without improving the conditions in which it operates eventually becomes a game of chicken - until something (possibly even the external event) forces the reversion. If</span> you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, click on the graph below.</p>\n<figure>\n<img src=\"https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/zc8k0i3mgo8f2mIMr9IqYA--/cT03NTthcHBpZD15dmlkZW9mZWVkczs-/https://media.zenfs.com/en/simply_wall_st__316/411c3393542282749b8788cc27c74ecd\"/>\n<figcaption>\nNYSE: AMC Insider Trading Volume December 13th, 2021\n </figcaption>\n</figure>\n<p><span>You can check out this <strong>free</strong> list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.</span></p>\n<h3><span>Insider Ownership</span></h3>\n<p><span>Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivized to build the company for the long term. </span><span>A</span><span>MC Entertainment Holdings insiders own about US$24m worth of shares. That equates to just 0.2% of the company.</span></p>\n<h3><span>Conclusion</span></h3>\n<p>Over the last 6 months, AMC shares lost around 50% of value, not in an aggressive sell-off but an orderly move downwards, with lower highs and lower lows.</p>\n<p>While the price can stay disconnected from the fundamentals for a prolonged time, it cannot do it forever. Gentrifying the company by raising its value without improving the conditions in which it operates eventually becomes a game of chicken - until something (possibly even the external event) forces the reversion. Arguably, nobody should know more about the business other than CEO and CFO, and their persistent stock sale is telling us that they're not confident about the current valuation.</p>\n<p><span>In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing AMC Entertainment Holdings.</span> <span>Our analysis shows <strong>5 warning signs for AMC Entertainment Holdings</strong> (2 are significant!) and we strongly recommend you look at them before investing.</span></p>\n<p><em><span>Of course, <strong>you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere.</strong> So take a peek at this <strong>free</strong> list of interesting companies.</span></em></p>\n<p><em>For the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. The uproar of the retail market that sent the stock thousands of percent higher showed that the times are changing. Institutions cannot discount the retail market strength or ability to execute coordinated pressure.\nHowever, it is hard to get on the positive side of this business regardless of whether we observe the internal or external environment.\nThe company remains heavily indebted, with over US$11b in long-term liabilities. With the cash and its equivalents currently at US$1.6b, an improved cash burn from Q2 to Q3 is a rare positive, as it means that there is no need for new debt or dilution in the near future.\nYet, even with 100% theaters open, the revenue is 50% compared to Q3 19, and 2 years ago – even with double the attendance, the company still posted -US$0.53 earnings per share.\nFurthermore, the external environment is clearly negative. The market shifted to entertainment at demand – with competitors like Disney, Netflix, ViacomCBS, or Discovery engaged in trench warfare for every subscriber.\nThe Insiders Aren't Believers\nIf we look at the data, insiders exclusively sold shares of AMC in recent months. Just days ago, CEO Adam Aron sold additional 312,500 shares, leaving him with less than 100,000 shares in direct beneficial ownership. Additionally, CFO Sean Goodman sold all of his remaining stake, 18,316 shares, leaving him with no direct ownership of the company.\nWhile both executives have more equity grants down the road, as structured in their compensation packages, these decisions provide little support for the company's current valuation.\nAfter the CEO, Mr.Aron, who just sold US$9.65m in shares, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Senior VP & Chief Human Resources Officer, Carla Chavarria, sold US$2.5m worth of shares at US$62.67 per share.\nIn the last year, insiders in AMC Entertainment Holdings didn't buy any shares. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, click on the graph below.\n\n\n\nNYSE: AMC Insider Trading Volume December 13th, 2021\n \n\nYou can check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.\nInsider Ownership\nUsually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivized to build the company for the long term. AMC Entertainment Holdings insiders own about US$24m worth of shares. That equates to just 0.2% of the company.\nConclusion\nOver the last 6 months, AMC shares lost around 50% of value, not in an aggressive sell-off but an orderly move downwards, with lower highs and lower lows.\nWhile the price can stay disconnected from the fundamentals for a prolonged time, it cannot do it forever. Gentrifying the company by raising its value without improving the conditions in which it operates eventually becomes a game of chicken - until something (possibly even the external event) forces the reversion. Arguably, nobody should know more about the business other than CEO and CFO, and their persistent stock sale is telling us that they're not confident about the current valuation.\nIn addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing AMC Entertainment Holdings. Our analysis shows 5 warning signs for AMC Entertainment Holdings (2 are significant!) and we strongly recommend you look at them before investing.\nOf course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies.\nFor the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. (DWAC), the SPAC merging with Donald Trump's new and public social-media platform. Established via Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC), a buying frenzy has taken DWAC from $10/share to over $130/share, following a deal announced on October 20, 2021. Trump Media & Technology Group will combine with DWAC to launch a new social network called TRUTH Social, a deal valuing the media company at approximately $875 million.</p>\n<p>DWAC lacks fundamentals because it has no revenues or earnings - like all SPACs, it is a shell company established to raise capital through IPO. Like meme stocks, SPACs thrive on investor craze and are often driven by FOMO (fear of missing out). It is a real thing! So, as the Head of Quantitative Strategy at Seeking Alpha, sentiment is certainly among the data points I monitor.</p>\n<p>For those of us who are inclined towards long-term investing, however, sentiment is a pretty poor predictor of long-term price performance. Fundamentals do matter. And from a valuation perspective, SPACs - like meme stocks - are risky investments. The difference is meme stocks are viewed as emerging growth stocks from dying industries, but at least they have a track record, history, and fundamentals. SPACs are not profitable on the opposite end because they are newly formed and have no operating history. But SPACs are all the craze because they are new and forward-thinking companies establishing cutting-edge offerings, businesses, and business models.</p>\n<p>Many SPACs form without an underlying company. They are private equity-backed IPOs that can circumvent the traditional IPO process in a low-cost expedited fashion and require less syndication from investment banks; they tend to ride the wave of more of a high-flying IPO than meme stocks. Once a SPAC prices its stock, they typically list at $10, as evidenced by DWAC.</p>\n<p>Many investors believe all meme stocks and SPACs will go to the moon when they actually follow the trajectory of a recent flight to space conducted by a former SPAC, Virgin Galactic (SPCE), which only lasted about 12 minutes. SPACs may have their day in the sun now; they're usually short-lived! It's a cautionary tale of why sentiment, and the stock momentum it produces, need to be balanced with other factors of long-term performance: value, growth, profitability, and analyst estimates. This is the lens we'll apply to meme stocks and SPACs in this article, to fairly gauge the opportunities here.</p>\n<p><b>Meme and SPAC Stocks: Speculative Euphoria and Emotion as Drivers?</b></p>\n<p>Any investor or trader in a stock driven by strong sentiment needs to know it is a gamble and that the risk is high. Many years ago, the economist Hyman Minsky proposed a theory that suggests that stability is destabilizing. During economically prosperous times, there's a state of speculative euphoria that spreads through groups of investors. After taking profits, they create their seeds of destruction by risk-taking, creating financial instability or panic and crisis.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, people always say this time is different. Hence, sentiment and herding remain one amazing driver of stock price performance. Many of the Meme and SPAC stocks listed below were driven by emotion at some point. Should individuals choose to invest in any of the stocks, they need to recognize it is a bet similar to that made in a casino.</p>\n<p>Investors that want to rest easy, and desire a time horizon beyond a single trading day, can find stocks with excellent fundamentals and quantitative metrics on our Top Stocks By Quant screen. The screen is updated every day and is grounded in the recommendations of SA Quantitative metrics. Our Very Bullish Quant recommendations are up YTD 46.81% compared with the S&P 500, up 24.29%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7aad11ced9409e3a7ed2ebc491436d03\" tg-width=\"1243\" tg-height=\"419\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: S&P Cap IQ and Seeking Alpha.</span></p>\n<p>Sentiment can be viewed as a single financial factor. Sometimes single factors work great - until they don't. The \"don't\" is one of the reasons we use a multi-faceted and multi-factor approach to our quantitative algorithms. Years of experience managing money for a hedge fund and a proprietary trading desk have taught me that putting all your eggs into a single investment theme is very dangerous over a long period. We do not want to get pigeonholed when investors' irrational exuberance for the month's factor turns into fervor for another element. When the investment cycle on a factor turns, investors can take a beating.</p>\n<p>Instead of focusing on a single metric, sentiment, we blend investment metrics based on value, growth, profitability, earnings, and momentum. This balanced approach has worked very well over the long term, as seen in the graph below.</p>\n<p>Below is a table of 15 meme stocks and 15 SPACs showing how much they have traded off from peak sentiment levels. While euphoria and huge gains may draw in investors, the table below depicts that with meme stocks comes volatility and huge gains quickly wiped out.</p>\n<p><b>Meme Stocks Fall Hard From Highs</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4af3892ec5e74d87bb7dd3c0de4b7e44\" tg-width=\"564\" tg-height=\"462\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>Meme stocks do not offer strong growth, and the valuation framework is weak. While their prices may appeal to investors, these beaten-down stocks have negative fundamentals. The pump-and-dump price manipulation has taught many investors to invest in stocks with the best investment characteristics of growth, profitability, value, momentum, and rising analysts' earnings estimates.</p>\n<p><b>SA Ratings And Grades On Meme Stocks</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/851d36762e10cca05279e8484a0a8ce1\" tg-width=\"919\" tg-height=\"400\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>As we witnessed earlier in the year, SPAC mania took a plunge. When prices skyrocket quicker than the fundamentals can explain, investors get nervous. But during a cycle of herd intensity, it has the potential to rocket a stock. Even George Soros would partake, \"When I see a bubble forming, I rush in to buy, adding fuel to the fire\".\nHere is a list of Meme and SPAC stocks on our Portfolio Tool to show performance. We also offer stocks screened by Seeking Alpha for solid fundamentals and quant scores.\nDWAC and most other Meme stocks and SPACs are very risky: They are being driven not by fundamentals or quantitative metrics but by short-term (daily) sentiment.\nIf you want to rest easy, with a time horizon beyond one trading day, our Top Stocks screen gives you stocks with excellent fundamentals and quantitative metrics.\n\nGearstd/iStock via Getty Images\nThe newest flavor of the month is hot stock Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC), the SPAC merging with Donald Trump's new and public social-media platform. Established via Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC), a buying frenzy has taken DWAC from $10/share to over $130/share, following a deal announced on October 20, 2021. Trump Media & Technology Group will combine with DWAC to launch a new social network called TRUTH Social, a deal valuing the media company at approximately $875 million.\nDWAC lacks fundamentals because it has no revenues or earnings - like all SPACs, it is a shell company established to raise capital through IPO. Like meme stocks, SPACs thrive on investor craze and are often driven by FOMO (fear of missing out). It is a real thing! So, as the Head of Quantitative Strategy at Seeking Alpha, sentiment is certainly among the data points I monitor.\nFor those of us who are inclined towards long-term investing, however, sentiment is a pretty poor predictor of long-term price performance. But SPACs are all the craze because they are new and forward-thinking companies establishing cutting-edge offerings, businesses, and business models.\nMany SPACs form without an underlying company. They are private equity-backed IPOs that can circumvent the traditional IPO process in a low-cost expedited fashion and require less syndication from investment banks; they tend to ride the wave of more of a high-flying IPO than meme stocks. Once a SPAC prices its stock, they typically list at $10, as evidenced by DWAC.\nMany investors believe all meme stocks and SPACs will go to the moon when they actually follow the trajectory of a recent flight to space conducted by a former SPAC, Virgin Galactic (SPCE), which only lasted about 12 minutes. SPACs may have their day in the sun now; they're usually short-lived! It's a cautionary tale of why sentiment, and the stock momentum it produces, need to be balanced with other factors of long-term performance: value, growth, profitability, and analyst estimates. This is the lens we'll apply to meme stocks and SPACs in this article, to fairly gauge the opportunities here.\nMeme and SPAC Stocks: Speculative Euphoria and Emotion as Drivers?\nAny investor or trader in a stock driven by strong sentiment needs to know it is a gamble and that the risk is high. Many years ago, the economist Hyman Minsky proposed a theory that suggests that stability is destabilizing. During economically prosperous times, there's a state of speculative euphoria that spreads through groups of investors. After taking profits, they create their seeds of destruction by risk-taking, creating financial instability or panic and crisis.\nNevertheless, people always say this time is different. Hence, sentiment and herding remain one amazing driver of stock price performance. Many of the Meme and SPAC stocks listed below were driven by emotion at some point. Should individuals choose to invest in any of the stocks, they need to recognize it is a bet similar to that made in a casino.\nInvestors that want to rest easy, and desire a time horizon beyond a single trading day, can find stocks with excellent fundamentals and quantitative metrics on our Top Stocks By Quant screen. The screen is updated every day and is grounded in the recommendations of SA Quantitative metrics. Our Very Bullish Quant recommendations are up YTD 46.81% compared with the S&P 500, up 24.29%.\nSource: S&P Cap IQ and Seeking Alpha.\nSentiment can be viewed as a single financial factor. When the investment cycle on a factor turns, investors can take a beating.\nInstead of focusing on a single metric, sentiment, we blend investment metrics based on value, growth, profitability, earnings, and momentum. This balanced approach has worked very well over the long term, as seen in the graph below.\nBelow is a table of 15 meme stocks and 15 SPACs showing how much they have traded off from peak sentiment levels. While euphoria and huge gains may draw in investors, the table below depicts that with meme stocks comes volatility and huge gains quickly wiped out.\nMeme Stocks Fall Hard From Highs\n\nMeme stocks do not offer strong growth, and the valuation framework is weak. While their prices may appeal to investors, these beaten-down stocks have negative fundamentals. The pump-and-dump price manipulation has taught many investors to invest in stocks with the best investment characteristics of growth, profitability, value, momentum, and rising analysts' earnings estimates.\nSA Ratings And Grades On Meme Stocks\n\nAs we witnessed earlier in the year, SPAC mania took a plunge. When prices skyrocket quicker than the fundamentals can explain, investors get nervous. David Solomon, Chief Executive of major SPAC underwriter Goldman Sachs, warned earlier this year that the boom is not \"sustainable in the medium term.\" If you don't believe it, Here's a look at several SPAC stocks off from their 52-week highs.\nWill Trump SPAC Shares Decline As Others Have Fallen?\n\nSeeking Alpha's Quant Ratings and Factor Grades\nSeeking Alpha's Quant Ratings Factor Grades provide investors with an instant characterization of each stock.
