I will compare Ford against NIO in each category and issue a final verdict at the end.</p>\n<p><b>Ford vs. NIO: The battle for the global electric vehicle market is heating up</b></p>\n<p>Although there is a world of difference between Ford and NIO, both companies are set to go toe-to-toe in the rapidly growing global electric vehicle market. Ford’s fleet is not yet EV-focused but this is going to change: Feeling that the EV race is heating up, Ford said it is accelerating its electrification plan by investing $30B into its EV manufacturing capabilities until 2025. Ford’s previous capital plan called for a $22B investment in zero-emission vehicles. Ford also set an ambitious sales goal: 40% of its global sales will be electric within the next decade and 33% of pickup truck sales. Electric vehicle sales account for just 1% of Ford's sales today. As Ford is phasing out combustion engines, it is set to evolve into an all-electric vehicle maker by 2040.</p>\n<p><b>Market opportunity</b></p>\n<p>In 2020, 3.2m electric vehicles were sold in the world which represented a small market share of just 4.2%. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.</p>\n<p>Winner here: Ford.</p>\n<p><b>Differentiation and BaaS revenue model</b></p>\n<p>Both Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.</p>\n<p>Ford is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.</p>\n<p>Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!</p>\n<p>Due to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.</p>\n<p>Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. The cryptocurrency uses more energy than entire countries such as Sweden and Malaysia, according to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.\nTo understand why bitcoin is so energy-intensive, you have to look at its underlying technology, the blockchain.\nBitcoin's public ledger is decentralized, meaning it isn't controlled by any single authority. It's constantly being updated by a network of computers around the world.\nSo-called miners run purpose-built computers to solve complex math puzzles in order to make a transaction go through. This is the only way to mint new bitcoins.\nMiners do not run this operation for free. They have to shell out huge sums on specialized equipment. A key incentive of bitcoin's model, known as \"proof of work,\" is the promise of being rewarded in some bitcoin if you manage to solve its complex hashing algorithm.\nIt's worth noting thatdogecoin, which has risen wildly in price lately on the back of support from Musk, also uses a proof-of-work mechanism.\nCarol Alexander, a professor at the University of Sussex Business School, explains that bitcoin's mining \"difficulty\" — a measure of the computational effort it takes to mine bitcoin — has been going \"up and up\" over the last three years.\n\"More and more electricity is being used,\" Alexander told CNBC. \"That means that the network difficulty will also be going up (and) more miners are coming in because the hash rate's going up.\"\nBitcoin's price is up almost 70% so far this year. Intel won't have 7nm chips of its own until 2023, assuming nothing gets derailed before then.</p><p>Intel will spend big in the coming years on manufacturing as it looks to close the gap and launch its own foundry services business. The company is pouring $20 billion into two new facilities in Arizona, and its annual capital spending is right around that $20 billion mark.</p><p>But TSMC is spending even bigger. The company plans to spend a whopping $100 billion over the next three years to expand capacity. By the time Intel finally launches its first 7nm chip, TSMC plans to be already mass-producing chips built on a 3nm process. Comparing processes between companies isn't exactly apples-to-apples, but you get the idea.</p><p>A comeback for Intel looks downright impossible given TSMC's lead. It will require a lot of things to go right for Intel, and some things to go wrong for its competitors. It's exactly the kind of situation AMD found itself in a few years ago.</p><h2>AMD's comeback looked impossible, too</h2><p>Let's rewind to 2015. AMD was in awful shape. Revenue plunged 28% that year to just $4 billion, and the company reported a staggering net loss of $660 million . To say that AMD's products weren't competitive with Intel's would be an understatement.</p><p>AMD's share of the server chip market had fallen close to zero just as demand from cloud computing providers was starting to heat up. By 2017, AMD was shipping less than 10% of PC chips. The company's Bulldozer architecture, launched in 2011 and revised a few times, was a disaster. Reviewers at Anandtech found <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of AMD's early Bulldozer PC chips was outperformed by a comparable Intel chip by as much as 50%.</p><p>A comeback for AMD looked like the longest of longshots. Not only did Intel have a manufacturing lead at the time, but it was also designing better chips than AMD.</p><p>Today, AMD has come roaring back. The company's Zen architecture is the foundation of its Ryzen PC and EPYC server chips, with the latest iteration of each built on TSMC's 7nm process. AMD has grown its market share considerably, and it grew revenue to nearly $10 billion in 2020. In many cases, AMD's chips are outperforming Intel's chips, and they're using considerably less power thanks to the advanced manufacturing process.</p><p>AMD's comeback required a few things to happen. AMD needed to design a better architecture; third-party foundries like TSMC needed to continually launch improved manufacturing processes without issue; and Intel needed to make serious missteps. It all happened, as unlikely as it seemed back in 2015.</p><h2>Intel can make a comeback; it just won't be easy</h2><p>Given what AMD has managed, it would be unwise to completely write off Intel. Yes, the company has made a lot of mistakes over the years. Yes, it will take more than Intel getting its manufacturing operation back on track for the company to regain its manufacturing edge. TSMC will probably need to have some missteps of its own.</p><p>I can't put odds on Intel's comeback, but I know that it's never a good idea to simply assume whatever is happening now will continue to happen forever. I was dead wrong about AMD's turnaround for exactly that reason. Shares of AMD have gained more than 2,000% over the past five years, by the way.</p><p>Intel stock hasn't suffered all that much, so don't expect those kinds of gains if the company can turn itself around. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM), which counts Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) as a customer, has pulled into what looks like an insurmountable lead.While Intel is still churning out PC chips built on its now ancient 14nm process, TSMC has been offering its customers 7nm chips for quite some time. Intel won't have 7nm chips of its own until 2023, assuming nothing gets derailed before then.Intel will spend big in the coming years on manufacturing as it looks to close the gap and launch its own foundry services business. The company is pouring $20 billion into two new facilities in Arizona, and its annual capital spending is right around that $20 billion mark.But TSMC is spending even bigger. The company plans to spend a whopping $100 billion over the next three years to expand capacity. By the time Intel finally launches its first 7nm chip, TSMC plans to be already mass-producing chips built on a 3nm process. Comparing processes between companies isn't exactly apples-to-apples, but you get the idea.A comeback for Intel looks downright impossible given TSMC's lead. It will require a lot of things to go right for Intel, and some things to go wrong for its competitors. It's exactly the kind of situation AMD found itself in a few years ago.AMD's comeback looked impossible, tooLet's rewind to 2015. AMD was in awful shape. Revenue plunged 28% that year to just $4 billion, and the company reported a staggering net loss of $660 million . To say that AMD's products weren't competitive with Intel's would be an understatement.AMD's share of the server chip market had fallen close to zero just as demand from cloud computing providers was starting to heat up. By 2017, AMD was shipping less than 10% of PC chips. The company's Bulldozer architecture, launched in 2011 and revised a few times, was a disaster. Reviewers at Anandtech found one of AMD's early Bulldozer PC chips was outperformed by a comparable Intel chip by as much as 50%.A comeback for AMD looked like the longest of longshots. Not only did Intel have a manufacturing lead at the time, but it was also designing better chips than AMD.Today, AMD has come roaring back. The company's Zen architecture is the foundation of its Ryzen PC and EPYC server chips, with the latest iteration of each built on TSMC's 7nm process. AMD has grown its market share considerably, and it grew revenue to nearly $10 billion in 2020. In many cases, AMD's chips are outperforming Intel's chips, and they're using considerably less power thanks to the advanced manufacturing process.AMD's comeback required a few things to happen. AMD needed to design a better architecture; third-party foundries like TSMC needed to continually launch improved manufacturing processes without issue; and Intel needed to make serious missteps. It all happened, as unlikely as it seemed back in 2015.Intel can make a comeback; it just won't be easyGiven what AMD has managed, it would be unwise to completely write off Intel. Yes, the company has made a lot of mistakes over the years. Yes, it will take more than Intel getting its manufacturing operation back on track for the company to regain its manufacturing edge. TSMC will probably need to have some missteps of its own.I can't put odds on Intel's comeback, but I know that it's never a good idea to simply assume whatever is happening now will continue to happen forever. I was dead wrong about AMD's turnaround for exactly that reason. Shares of AMD have gained more than 2,000% over the past five years, by the way.Intel stock hasn't suffered all that much, so don't expect those kinds of gains if the company can turn itself around. ARK hasn't stopped there, buying more Coinbase stock each day since its direct listing. ARK Invest now owns almost 1.9 million Coinbase shares -- worth roughly $580 million at Thursday's prices -- in three of the firm's ETFs: <b>ARK Fintech Innovation</b>, <b>ARK Innovation</b>, and <b>ARK Next Generation Internet</b>.</p>\n<p>Let's look at three reasons Wood was so quick to add Coinbase shares to ARK Invest's coffers.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af28e6924a8799f446c42cce0a61647f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>1. A breakout year for Coinbase</h2>\n<p>The ongoing boom in cryptocurrency has attracted the attention of novice and experienced investors alike. Coinbase Global is the leading cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., allowing enthusiasts to buy and sell a wide range of popular digital currencies. The company makes the majority of its revenue from the transaction fees it charges for each sale.</p>\n<p>The platform has more than 56 million individual users, 7,000 institutions, and 115,000 partners in over 100 countries. Its growing user base gives the company an unmatched ecosystem that has something for everyone, from the beginning cryptocurrency enthusiast to the more experienced buyer.</p>\n<p>2020 was a breakout year for Coinbase, so it isn't surprising that it caught Wood's attention. Coinbase reported that revenue grew 139% year over year to $1.14 billion. At the same time, profits turned positive with net income of $322 million, pivoting from a loss of $30 million in 2019. As a result, the company's adjusted EBITDA surged more than 2,000% to $527 million.</p>\n<p>Preliminary results show that growth accelerated during the first quarter of this year. Revenue surged to $1.8 billion, a ninefold increase from $191 million in the prior-year quarter. For context, revenue tripled compared to the fourth quarter, while exceeding Coinbase's revenue for all of last year. While the final numbers haven't been released, net income is expected to be in a range of $730 million to $800 million, soaring nearly 2,300% year over year, at the midpoint of its range.</p>\n<p>Given the eye-catching results, Coinbase would have certainly been on Wood's radar.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F622066%2Fshiny-gold-bitcoin-with-market-graph-background.jpg&w=700&op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"463\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>2. A longtime believer in cryptocurrency</h2>\n<p>Wood has long been a proponent of digital assets, buying <b>Bitcoin</b> back in 2015 -- before it entered the zeitgeist. She was particularly intrigued by the potential for blockchain, the digital ledger technology that underpins cryptocurrency. Wood has even gone so far as to say that Bitcoin's price could eventually top $500,000 -- nine times its current price, which is around $55,000 at this writing.</p>\n<p>A quick look at ARK's funds shows that Wood continues to bet big on the potential for cryptocurrency and blockchain. ARK Next Generation Internet holds more than 5% of its $6.9 billion in funds under management in <b>Grayscale Bitcoin Trust</b> -- the first publicly traded security investing solely in Bitcoin.</p>\n<p>That's not all. <b>Square</b> is the No. 1, 2, or 3 holding of three ARK funds and was among the first to offer users more widespread cryptocurrency accessibility. The point-of-sale and digital payments provider first tested buying and selling Bitcoin on its platform in late 2017, before expanding access to all users in early 2018. Rival <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PYPL\">PayPal</a> Holdings</b> also debuted a service late last year that enables users to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is still in its infancy</h2>\n<p>While it may seem like cryptocurrency is finally entering the mainstream, it's actually still early days for the digital payment method. Hester Peirce, a commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, says cryptocurrency is still in its infancy, but interest is growing.</p>\n<p>\"We're seeing more interest coming from institutional quarters than we have in the past,\" Peirce said during a live-stream financial conference. \"As people are more comfortable working in a virtual world in every industry now, I think people are likely to turn more interest to the crypto space. The founder and CEO of ARK Investment Management made a name for herself in 2020 when her five flagship exchange-traded funds (ETFs) crushed the returns of the broader market, each notching gains of more than 100%, by focusing on emerging technologies and disruptive high-growth stocks.\nWood made headlines again last week when she invested in Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) on the day it went public. ARK hasn't stopped there, buying more Coinbase stock each day since its direct listing. ARK Invest now owns almost 1.9 million Coinbase shares -- worth roughly $580 million at Thursday's prices -- in three of the firm's ETFs: ARK Fintech Innovation, ARK Innovation, and ARK Next Generation Internet.\nLet's look at three reasons Wood was so quick to add Coinbase shares to ARK Invest's coffers.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. A breakout year for Coinbase\nThe ongoing boom in cryptocurrency has attracted the attention of novice and experienced investors alike. Coinbase Global is the leading cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., allowing enthusiasts to buy and sell a wide range of popular digital currencies. The company makes the majority of its revenue from the transaction fees it charges for each sale.\nThe platform has more than 56 million individual users, 7,000 institutions, and 115,000 partners in over 100 countries. Its growing user base gives the company an unmatched ecosystem that has something for everyone, from the beginning cryptocurrency enthusiast to the more experienced buyer.\n2020 was a breakout year for Coinbase, so it isn't surprising that it caught Wood's attention. Coinbase reported that revenue grew 139% year over year to $1.14 billion. At the same time, profits turned positive with net income of $322 million, pivoting from a loss of $30 million in 2019. As a result, the company's adjusted EBITDA surged more than 2,000% to $527 million.\nPreliminary results show that growth accelerated during the first quarter of this year. Revenue surged to $1.8 billion, a ninefold increase from $191 million in the prior-year quarter. For context, revenue tripled compared to the fourth quarter, while exceeding Coinbase's revenue for all of last year. While the final numbers haven't been released, net income is expected to be in a range of $730 million to $800 million, soaring nearly 2,300% year over year, at the midpoint of its range.\nGiven the eye-catching results, Coinbase would have certainly been on Wood's radar.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n2. A longtime believer in cryptocurrency\nWood has long been a proponent of digital assets, buying Bitcoin back in 2015 -- before it entered the zeitgeist. She was particularly intrigued by the potential for blockchain, the digital ledger technology that underpins cryptocurrency. Wood has even gone so far as to say that Bitcoin's price could eventually top $500,000 -- nine times its current price, which is around $55,000 at this writing.\nA quick look at ARK's funds shows that Wood continues to bet big on the potential for cryptocurrency and blockchain. ARK Next Generation Internet holds more than 5% of its $6.9 billion in funds under management in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust -- the first publicly traded security investing solely in Bitcoin.\nThat's not all. Square is the No. 1, 2, or 3 holding of three ARK funds and was among the first to offer users more widespread cryptocurrency accessibility. The point-of-sale and digital payments provider first tested buying and selling Bitcoin on its platform in late 2017, before expanding access to all users in early 2018. Rival PayPal Holdings also debuted a service late last year that enables users to buy, hold, and sell cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is still in its infancy\nWhile it may seem like cryptocurrency is finally entering the mainstream, it's actually still early days for the digital payment method. Hester Peirce, a commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, says cryptocurrency is still in its infancy, but interest is growing.\n\"We're seeing more interest coming from institutional quarters than we have in the past,\" Peirce said during a live-stream financial conference. \"As people are more comfortable working in a virtual world in every industry now, I think people are likely to turn more interest to the crypto space.
