There could be more pain, spelling additional trouble for ","content":"
Don’t be fooled by Big Tech stocks’ rise. There could be more pain, spelling additional trouble for the S&P 500.
\n
There’s no denying that these stocks are on the up again, for now.Apple (AAPL),Meta Platforms (FB),Amazon.com (AMZN),Netflix (NFLX),Alphabet (GOOGL),Microsoft (MSFT), and Tesla (TSLA) have all risen between 3% and 10% from the low points reached in their recent pullbacks. Stocks had been sliding from mid-November until late last week, as the Federal Reserve signaled that it might move sooner than planned to halt the bond purchases it has used to prop up the economy during the pandemic.
\n
Less money moving into long-dated Treasury bonds allows their prices to fall, all else being equal, pushing yields on the debt higher. Those higher interest rates reduce the current, discounted value of future profits—and investors in these tech giants are counting on big profits many years down the line.
\n
But it’s far from certain that the pain for Big Tech stocks is over.
\n
The Fed’s change in stance will make gains hard to come by for Big Tech stocks. Central banks effectively print money to buy bonds, so the more they purchase,, the bigger their balance sheets become. Less bond buying means slower balance-sheet growth, which makes a difference for Big Tech stocks, according to Bank of America.
\n
Its data show a close correlation between the size of central-bank balance sheets and Big Tech valuations. And the aggregate size of the balance sheets of the Fed, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Bank of England has flattened out at about $25 trillion, while the market capitalization of the Big Tech stocks has continued to rise.
\n
The problem is that based on history, a central-bank balance sheet of about $25 trillion implies an the aggregate market capitalization for those Big Tech stocks of around $9 trillion, according to Bank of America’s data. That would mean a decline of about 20% from the current $11.3 trillion.
\n
A separate indicator also hints that the best of Big Tech’s outperformance may be over. The group’s gains have outpaced the S&P 500’s by so much recently that its total market cap is now the highest portion of the S&P 500’s total value since August 2020. That, of course, was just before the Big Tech stocks all experienced corrections, or declines of at least 10%.
\n
Before that, the last time Big Tech was so large compared to the broader market was in 2000, before the dotcom bubble burst.
\n
A poor performance by Big Tech could drag the S&P 500 down. The index is weighted according to market cap, so when the biggest stocks fall, it makes more of a difference than when smaller companies decline. If the S&P 500 is to post solid gains from here, it will need the help of stocks outside of Big Tech.
\n
That is also far from a certainty. The percentage of New York Stock Exchange-listed stocks that are trading above their 200-day moving averages was just under 50% as of Monday, compared with close to 100% during the best times, according to Morgan Stanley. If so many stocks keep trading at such low prices, the S&P 500 should fall about 8% from its current level, the bank’s data show.
\n
One positive is that the S&P 500 has risen about 4% in the four trading days since the low of its recent pullback. This week, the vast majority of stocks on the index have participated in the rally.
\n
That is a good sign, but investors will need to see the index stage a broad rally for longer in order to have confidence in the gains.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Pain Isn’t Over for Big Tech Stocks. And the aggregate size of the balance sheets of the Fed, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Bank of England has flattened out at about $25 trillion, while the market capitalization of the Big Tech stocks has continued to rise.\nThe problem is that based on history, a central-bank balance sheet of about $25 trillion implies an the aggregate market capitalization for those Big Tech stocks of around $9 trillion, according to Bank of America’s data. That would mean a decline of about 20% from the current $11.3 trillion.\nA separate indicator also hints that the best of Big Tech’s outperformance may be over. The group’s gains have outpaced the S&P 500’s by so much recently that its total market cap is now the highest portion of the S&P 500’s total value since August 2020. That, of course, was just before the Big Tech stocks all experienced corrections, or declines of at least 10%.\nBefore that, the last time Big Tech was so large compared to the broader market was in 2000, before the dotcom bubble burst.\nA poor performance by Big Tech could drag the S&P 500 down. The index is weighted according to market cap, so when the biggest stocks fall, it makes more of a difference than when smaller companies decline. If the S&P 500 is to post solid gains from here, it will need the help of stocks outside of Big Tech.\nThat is also far from a certainty. The percentage of New York Stock Exchange-listed stocks that are trading above their 200-day moving averages was just under 50% as of Monday, compared with close to 100% during the best times, according to Morgan Stanley. If so many stocks keep trading at such low prices, the S&P 500 should fall about 8% from its current level, the bank’s data show.\nOne positive is that the S&P 500 has risen about 4% in the four trading days since the low of its recent pullback. This week, the vast majority of stocks on the index have participated in the rally.\nThat is a good sign, but investors will need to see the index stage a broad rally for longer in order to have confidence in the gains.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":895,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":606516336,"gmtCreate":1638892098755,"gmtModify":1638892099597,"author":{"id":"3551688341035316","authorId":"3551688341035316","name":"Edison1220","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2b1361306a2380ad207a552514c38cda","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3551688341035316","idStr":"3551688341035316"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B)$bought some ","listText":"$Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B)$bought some ","text":"$Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.B)$bought some","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7a69a7a5c18f22d1350ebafe821a663e","width":"1284","height":"2538"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/606516336","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":845,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":608912720,"gmtCreate":1638594813190,"gmtModify":1638594813655,"author":{"id":"3551688341035316","authorId":"3551688341035316","name":"Edison1220","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2b1361306a2380ad207a552514c38cda","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3551688341035316","idStr":"3551688341035316"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice sharing ","listText":"Nice sharing ","text":"Nice sharing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/608912720","repostId":"603292369","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":603292369,"gmtCreate":1638410616520,"gmtModify":1638861863521,"author":{"id":"3585780691540522","authorId":"3585780691540522","name":"FundMall","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3585780691540522","idStr":"3585780691540522"},"themes":[],"title":"How to pick the right Unit Trust ?","htmlText":"In the universe of Unit Trust, there are thousands of funds investors can choose from to include in their portfolio. Revenue fell 84% in the first quarter of 2021 from year-ago levels and declined 77% during fiscal 2020 compared with 2019.
\n
Theater reopenings could bring revenue improvements when AMC releases its second-quarter results. But will they show enough improvement to reflect the massive surge in the stock price? Thanks to the run-up, the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio now stands at 25, up from 0.2 at the beginning of the year. Until the recent surge in the stock price, the sales multiple had rarely climbed above 0.5 over the last three years.
\n
Unfortunately, investors seem to have fewer reasons than ever to buy this stock at a high valuation. However, reduced demand will bring about consolidation, making it more likely AMC and its peers will close some theaters. GameStop: New management and sales growth won't be enough
\n
Thanks to a social media-inspired battle with the short-sellers, GameStop stock has managed to increase by more than 1,000% since the beginning of the year. Now, this video-game-centric retailer has just turned the corner by attracting institutional investors and joining the Russell 1000.
\n
It also has branched out into new lines of business, such as toys and collectibles. Nonetheless, investors have primarily focused on the move into e-commerce to capitalize on game downloads. To that end, it hired e-commerce specialist Matt Furlong as its new CEO. Furlong ran Amazon's Australia operations during a period of high growth.
\n
Unfortunately, these moves might do little more than stop its competitive moat from narrowing further. Now, GameStop is merely another seller in the toy and collectible businesses. Moreover, its game downloads typically sell for the same price on the manufacturer's website. Besides serving as a one-stop-shop for game downloads, it offers little advantage other than the name recognition it built in past years.
\n
Nonetheless, the improvements helped revenue to grow 25% from year-ago levels to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2021. Moreover, falling operating expenses helped narrow the quarterly loss to $67 million versus $166 million in the year-ago quarter. Still, net sales fell 21% in fiscal 2020.
\n
Furthermore, at a P/S ratio of 2.6, it might appear inexpensive. However, with that ratio growing by more than 4,500% over the last year, any progress it could make in the near term might already be priced in.
\n
3. Koss: Struggling to gain market share in a crowded market
\n
Koss has also enjoyed some notoriety as a meme stock, reaching a high of $127.45 per share in early January on speculation driven by social media, before a massive pullback. This headphone and audio accessory manufacturer now trades in the $25-per-share range.
\n
After decades of struggling for survival, the company has won praise in recent years in the headset market. Many of its Bluetooth and wireless headsets earned ratings close to five stars on Amazon.
\n
Unfortunately, its products continue to operate at a competitive disadvantage. Koss must also compete with companies such as Apple and Sony. Aside from their massive size and name-recognition advantages, both operate ecosystems that could give their headsets an advantage. Moreover, a survey by CSIMarket found Koss' headsets held a market share of less than 1%.
\n
This disadvantage extends to financials. For the first nine months of the current fiscal year, sales fell 2% from the year-ago period. Koss managed to reverse the losses suffered during 2020 and posted a profit of almost $162,000 during that time.
\n
However, the forgiveness of a $507,000 Small Business Administration loan and a $379,000 gain from the settlement of a short sale drove the positive net income. Otherwise, Koss would have lost $724,000 during that period, more than the $624,000 loss from the first nine months of 2020.
\n
Moreover, it has reported about $982,000 in negative cash flows during the current fiscal year and holds just over $6 million in cash. With a reasonable strategy and over long periods of time, the stock market has been a very powerful wealth generating tool. The key challenges, though, are that not every investing strategy is a good one and the fact that the market's progress is rarely in a straight line upwards.
\n
Those challenges make it very possible for investing to wind up a nightmare, rather than a rewarding activity. Even worse, many of those problems are caused by issues that could have been avoided by investors who were better prepared. With that in mind, these four investing nightmares are ones you can work to avoid with the proper advanced planning.
\n
No. 1: Convincing yourself you need to sell low
\n
Newer investors are often worried about market volatility -- the very simple fact that on any given day, a stock's price may move down instead of up. Concerned about the loss of their money if the stock falls, they'll set up something known as a \"stop loss order.\" Those are orders to a broker to sell a position if the stock's price drops below a certain dollar amount or percentage.
\n
As tempting as those orders may seem on the surface, they often turn out to be very bad ideas in practice. For one thing, if a stock was worth buying at $50 a share, why is it any less worth buying at $40? If the company's fundamentals and prospects haven't changed, a lower price may actually be a good reason to buy more instead of selling.
\n
For another, if a company's stock price only temporarily falls below the threshold, a stop loss order can very easily turn a temporary drop in price into a permanent loss of capital. After all, if you're no longer invested, then you will not participate in any recovery that may happen.
\n
If that weren't enough, if you sell at a loss and then buy back in within 30 days, you trigger something known as a wash sale. If that happens, you lose the ability to claim the loss you generated on your taxes until you sell \"for real.\" That adds a lot of complexity to your investment tracking and potentially removes a key real benefit that could come from taking a loss.
\n
No. 2: Being forced by your broker to sell low
\n
Sometimes, even more experienced investors can get lured into the siren song of margin and its potential to magnify returns when things are going well. The big problem with margin is that it is very much a double-edged sword. It magnifies the downside as well as the upside. On top of that, if the market moves too aggressively against you while you're using margin, your broker can force you to close out your investments.
\n
Unfortunately, that often turns into yet another way in which short-term volatility can turn into a more permanent loss of capital. It's also one that's largely avoidable by limiting your use of margin and recognizing that your broker has the ability to change the terms of your margin agreement to make it more restrictive.
\n
You can't avoid stock market volatility while being invested in it, but you can certainly limit the amount of margin you use to avoid that risk of being forcibly sold out during a temporary low.
\n
No. 3: Hoping long-term money will cover short-term needs
\n
That same market volatility means that investors can't count on stocks to be priced at any given level on any given day. As a result, if you're counting on your stocks to cover your near-term costs, you're setting yourself up for a nightmare scenario. After all, your bills won't go away just because the market may be down. If your only source of money to pay those bills comes from selling your stocks, then a down market means you'll have to sell that much more to raise the same amount of cash.
\n
It's that forced sale of more shares that really turns this into a nightmare scenario. Selling more means you keep less. Keeping less gives you that much less to participate in any recovery or market rally that may happen. That means even if the market recovers, you won't see as much of those gains as you otherwise would have, which means the next time you need cash, you'd again need to sell more.
\n
It's a vicious cycle, and it's one that you can avoid by keeping money you need to spend in the near term out of stocks. In today's low interest rate environment, you won't earn a strong rate of return on that money. The trade-off is that you will at least have a much higher certainty that the specific amount of cash you need will be there for you when you need it.
\n
No. 4: Missing out on long-term gains due to short-term fear
\n
Those first three nightmare scenarios are very real, and they're part of what makes people nervous about investing in the stock market. The good news is that there are ways to avoid all of them and still wind up okay. This last one, however, can create much tougher problems for people over the long haul. And that's the nightmare scenario that results when people give into their market fears and never invest at all.
\n
Despite the daily volatility and the very real short-term risks, the stock market has been a tremendously strong long-term wealth generator for generations. The key challenge, though, is that you need to be invested in the market to receive those long-term returns it can generate.
\n
When all is said and done, $0 invested at any rate of return for any amount of time will still wind up as $0. Winding up in retirement with no assets, no income, and no way to cover your costs other than what little Social Security may provide can be a real nightmare with no easy way out.
\n
Fortunately, like the other nightmares on this list, this one can also be avoided. With a reasonable strategy and over long periods of time, the stock market has been a very powerful wealth generating tool. The key challenges, though, are that not every investing strategy is a good one and the fact that the market's progress is rarely in a straight line upwards.\nThose challenges make it very possible for investing to wind up a nightmare, rather than a rewarding activity. Even worse, many of those problems are caused by issues that could have been avoided by investors who were better prepared. With that in mind, these four investing nightmares are ones you can work to avoid with the proper advanced planning.\nNo. 1: Convincing yourself you need to sell low\nNewer investors are often worried about market volatility -- the very simple fact that on any given day, a stock's price may move down instead of up. Concerned about the loss of their money if the stock falls, they'll set up something known as a \"stop loss order.\" Those are orders to a broker to sell a position if the stock's price drops below a certain dollar amount or percentage.\nAs tempting as those orders may seem on the surface, they often turn out to be very bad ideas in practice. For one thing, if a stock was worth buying at $50 a share, why is it any less worth buying at $40? If the company's fundamentals and prospects haven't changed, a lower price may actually be a good reason to buy more instead of selling.\nFor another, if a company's stock price only temporarily falls below the threshold, a stop loss order can very easily turn a temporary drop in price into a permanent loss of capital. After all, if you're no longer invested, then you will not participate in any recovery that may happen.\nIf that weren't enough, if you sell at a loss and then buy back in within 30 days, you trigger something known as a wash sale. If that happens, you lose the ability to claim the loss you generated on your taxes until you sell \"for real.\" That adds a lot of complexity to your investment tracking and potentially removes a key real benefit that could come from taking a loss.\nNo. 2: Being forced by your broker to sell low\nSometimes, even more experienced investors can get lured into the siren song of margin and its potential to magnify returns when things are going well. The big problem with margin is that it is very much a double-edged sword. It magnifies the downside as well as the upside. On top of that, if the market moves too aggressively against you while you're using margin, your broker can force you to close out your investments.\nUnfortunately, that often turns into yet another way in which short-term volatility can turn into a more permanent loss of capital. It's also one that's largely avoidable by limiting your use of margin and recognizing that your broker has the ability to change the terms of your margin agreement to make it more restrictive.\nYou can't avoid stock market volatility while being invested in it, but you can certainly limit the amount of margin you use to avoid that risk of being forcibly sold out during a temporary low.\nNo. 3: Hoping long-term money will cover short-term needs\nThat same market volatility means that investors can't count on stocks to be priced at any given level on any given day. As a result, if you're counting on your stocks to cover your near-term costs, you're setting yourself up for a nightmare scenario. After all, your bills won't go away just because the market may be down. If your only source of money to pay those bills comes from selling your stocks, then a down market means you'll have to sell that much more to raise the same amount of cash.\nIt's that forced sale of more shares that really turns this into a nightmare scenario. Selling more means you keep less. Keeping less gives you that much less to participate in any recovery or market rally that may happen. That means even if the market recovers, you won't see as much of those gains as you otherwise would have, which means the next time you need cash, you'd again need to sell more.\nIt's a vicious cycle, and it's one that you can avoid by keeping money you need to spend in the near term out of stocks. In today's low interest rate environment, you won't earn a strong rate of return on that money. The trade-off is that you will at least have a much higher certainty that the specific amount of cash you need will be there for you when you need it.\nNo. 4: Missing out on long-term gains due to short-term fear\nThose first three nightmare scenarios are very real, and they're part of what makes people nervous about investing in the stock market. The good news is that there are ways to avoid all of them and still wind up okay. This last one, however, can create much tougher problems for people over the long haul. And that's the nightmare scenario that results when people give into their market fears and never invest at all.\nDespite the daily volatility and the very real short-term risks, the stock market has been a tremendously strong long-term wealth generator for generations. The key challenge, though, is that you need to be invested in the market to receive those long-term returns it can generate.\nWhen all is said and done, $0 invested at any rate of return for any amount of time will still wind up as $0. Winding up in retirement with no assets, no income, and no way to cover your costs other than what little Social Security may provide can be a real nightmare with no easy way out.\nFortunately, like the other nightmares on this list, this one can also be avoided. With a good long-term investing strategy, even socking away a little bit each payday toward wealth building can go a long way toward creating a substantial nest egg.\nGet started now\nIndeed, a long-term focus is one of the most important tools you have at your disposal when it comes to successful investing. The thing about the long term, though, is that you get less of it every day that you delay. So get started now, and maximize your chances of leaving these nightmares well behind you.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":176,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
