The major companies in the index reported earnings growth of 91% year over year.\nCNBC Pro spoke with five market experts and investors to hear what they learned over the past two months.\nBroad strength, big margins\nExpectations were high going in, but the breadth of the earnings beats were surprising, said Jeff Kilburg, the chief investment officer at Sanctuary Wealth.\n“I think people were looking for a little more bifurcated earnings season, and I think overall I was more impressed with earnings season. And I think that’s reflected in the all-time highs across all the indices,” Kilburg said.\nRevenue growth was projected to be solid, but margins were more of a question and surprised in a big way, said Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist and portfolio manager at Hightower Advisors. The second quarter saw the prices of key commodities of rising and more reports about supply chain issues and difficulty hiring workers.\n“I think how companies could handle the higher commodity prices, the higher wage pressures, [was impressive] and honestly that was something that I was worried about,” said Link, who added that the free cash flow generated during the quarter was “absolutely huge.”\nThe expanding profit margins will help to calm fears about “peak everything” that seemed to weigh on the market during the summer, said Victoria Fernandez, chief market strategist at Crossmark Global Investments.\n“Even though those growth numbers will be smaller in the third and the fourth quarter, I still think we’re going to have positive growth and the fundamentals will be good and the equity markets are going to continue to move higher … I really think earnings growth is going to drive a lot of the positivity in the market,” Fernandez said.\nOn a sector level, Link mentioned that financials were a group that stood out positively to her, while Kilburg said the corporate reports and external news were bullish for cybersecurity stocks.\n“What we came to the realization in this specific earnings season is the need for it more and more. The intensity of these cyberattacks globally are going to continue to drive expense,” Kilburg said.\nGuidance clues\nIn addition to quarterly results, earnings reports also give companies an opportunity to change their forecasts for quarters to come. During the second quarter, 67 companies in the S&P 500 reported positive earnings guidance — the highest number since 2006, according to FactSet.\nThis earnings season, guidance appeared to play a bigger-than-normal role in how stocks traded after their reports, said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives for the Schwab Center for Financial Research.\n“The ones that have exceeded targets have gone up somewhat. Those that guided either flat or lower got punished very, very firmly,” Frederick said.\nFrederick said he expected guidance to once again be a key metric during third-quarter earnings as investors look to see how management views the potential length of the pandemic and supply chain issues.\nSome companies declined to give much or any guidance, citing uncertainty around the pandemic. Crossmark’s Fernandez said companies may be staying particularly conservative, setting the stage for another round of earnings beats in the third quarter.\n“We’ve had a lot of companies come out and kind of downplay quarter three earnings and say we’re still concerned about the supply chain and the chip shortages and all these things that are affecting so much in the economy. And so I wonder if they are sort of lowering the bar intentionally,” Fernandez said.\nRisks\nHowever, even the strong earnings results and outlook don’t mean that the market is guaranteed to rise. Schwab’s Frederick said the ending of some stimulus programs, such as the enhanced unemployment benefits, could lead to less aggressive dip-buying in the market.\nAlso, Phillip Toews, the CEO and portfolio manager at Toews Asset Management, said the strong results weren’t enough to make him uneasy about the market’s valuation, particularly the trailing price-to-earnings ration.\n“For us as risk managers in the equity marketplace, almost everything is noise in terms of predictive power except valuation,” Toews said. “And the only times we’ve been at 28 [trailing P/E] or above 28 is leading up to the internet bubble and then briefly when earnings got crushed during the financial crisis.”\nToews described his outlook as a “boom-boom-kaboomer,” meaning that a major pullback for the market is likely inevitable even if doesn’t happen soon.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":798,"commentLimit":10,"likeStatus":false,"favoriteStatus":false,"reportStatus":false,"symbols":[],"verified":2,"subType":0,"readableState":1,"langContent":"CN","currentLanguage":"CN","warmUpFlag":false,"orderFlag":false,"shareable":true,"causeOfNotShareable":"","featuresForAnalytics":[],"commentAndTweetFlag":false,"upFlag":false,"length":98,"xxTargetLangEnum":"ZH_CN"},"commentList":[],"hasMoreComment":false,"orderType":2}
