In the first quarter of this year, major U.S. banks continued to implement workforce reduction strategies to mitigate operating costs amid evolving market conditions. 

$Citigroup(C)$  , the largest U.S. bank, announced a reduction of 2,000 employees, as part of its plan to cut 7,000 jobs previously disclosed. Additionally, $Bank of America(BAC)$  , $Wells Fargo(WFC)$  , and $PNC Financial Services Group Inc(PNC)$   also resorted to layoffs to streamline operations and reduce expenses.

According to reports cited by Liberty Financial, the combined workforce of Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and PNC Financial Services Group decreased by approximately 2,000 employees compared to the previous quarter. Bank of America CEO, Brian Moynihan, revealed a reduction of around 4,700 employees compared to the same period last year. The bank primarily achieved workforce reduction through natural attrition and freezing vacant positions.

Market Analysis:

Analysts suggest that rising financing costs, narrowing net interest margins, and uneven trading results may compel banks to adopt a cautious approach in the future. However, investment banking activities are expected to rebound with the recovery of capital markets. After achieving its target of 20,000 job cuts, Citigroup anticipates an annual reduction of $2 to $2.5 billion in personnel expenses, with a 10% decrease in the total workforce.
