The stock has made some investors quite wealthy over the last few months. I'd argue that the popular e-commerce company has a much greater long-term opportunity than AMC does, though.</p>\n<p>First of all, Etsy practically owns the niche online market in personalized handcrafted goods. Others have attempted to beat the company on its own turf but have failed. There are still significant growth opportunities in this $250 billion annual market.</p>\n<p>However, the pandemic showed Etsy more than ever that it can compete in a larger arena. The company now thinks that its total addressable market is close to $1.7 trillion.</p>\n<p>One way that Etsy is going after this expanded market is through acquisitions. Most recently, the company announced plans to acquire Depop for $1.6 billion, a move that vaults Etsy into the clothing resale business.</p>\n<p>I think that Etsy is a stock that could be a 10-bagger over the long run. The odds of AMC having that level of gains going forward are slim.</p>\n<h2>Innovative Industrial Properties</h2>\n<p>Speaking of big market opportunities, the U.S. medical cannabis market is growing by leaps and bounds. So far, 36 states have legalized medical cannabis.&nbsp;<b>Innovative Industrial Properties</b> (NYSE:IIPR) stands out as a key beneficiary from this growth.</p>\n<p>The company is the leading real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on the medical cannabis industry. IIP's forte is sale-leaseback transactions. In these deals, the REIT buys properties from cannabis operators. The operators then lease the properties back with a long-term lease agreement.</p>\n<p>Over the last three years, IIP's revenue has soared 1,300%. Its profits have skyrocketed more than 2,200%. Investors have also made even more money from the company's dividends.</p>\n<p>IIP currently owns 72 properties in 18 states. It should be able to continue growing briskly by making more sale-leaseback deals in those states (which include several of the biggest medical cannabis markets in the U.S.) as well as expanding into additional states.</p>\n<h2>Intuitive Surgical</h2>\n<p>I recently wrote about my top stock to buy in June. My pick was robotic surgical systems pioneer <b>Intuitive Surgical</b> (NASDAQ:ISRG).</p>\n<p>Like AMC, Intuitive Surgical is a reopening play. Just as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters, it also significantly impacted the volumes of non-emergency surgical procedures. Intuitive generates most of its revenue from selling replacement instruments and accessories for its da Vinci robotic surgical systems. Lower numbers of procedures meant lower revenue for the company.</p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, the number of movie tickets sold was declining. That's a not-so-great trend for AMC that could rear its ugly head again after a rebound in 2021 and 2022. Intuitive's procedure volume, though, has risen steadily for quite a while. Even with the pandemic, procedures still increased 1% year over year in 2020.</p>\n<p>Intuitive's long-term prospects are the main reason why I like this stock, though. The company has a huge growth opportunity targeting the procedures where it already has regulatory clearances. Even better, Intuitive thinks that it can more than triple its current addressable market by launching new products and securing additional regulatory clearances.</p>\n<p>Sure, Intuitive Surgical is already a big company with a market cap of over $100 billion. Innovative Industrial, or IIP for short, acquires facilities for growing and processing medical marijuana with the purpose of leasing these assets out for long periods of time.</p>\n<p>One of the more obvious benefits of this strategy is that it generates highly predictable cash flow. IIP owned 72 properties spanning 6.6 million square feet of rentable space in 18 states as of the beginning of June. According to the company, 100% of its properties are leased with a weighted-average lease of 16.8 years. It'll likely take less than half this time for the company to receive a complete payback on its $1.6 billion in invested capital. Plus, IIP passes along inflation-based rent hikes annually to its tenants, ensuring a very modest level of organic rental growth.</p>\n<p>What's more, Innovative Industrial is benefiting from federal gridlock on cannabis banking reform. Since marijuana is illegal at the federal level, pot companies have struggled to gain access to basic banking services. IIP resolves this issue with its sale-leaseback program. With this program, IIP acquires properties from multistate operators (MSO) for cash and immediately leases the property it buys back to the seller. It's used by consumer-facing businesses to enter customer information, handle product/service issues, manage online marketing campaigns, and even offer predictive sales analysis in real time.</p>\n<p>Through the midpoint of the decade, global CRM revenue is projected to rise annually by a low double-digit percentage. Salesforce, on the other hand, will be growing even faster. CEO Marc Benioff foresees his company increasing its full-year sales from $21.3 billion in its most recent fiscal year to more than $50 billion in five years (fiscal 2026). That's certainly easy to do when his company controls nearly 20% of worldwide CRM revenue as of the first half of 2020, per IDC. In conjunction with its fiscal 2022 first-quarter earnings report (ended May 2, 2021), the chipmaker announced that its board of directors declared a four-for-<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> stock split, payable in the form of a stock dividend. This move was conditional on NVIDIA stockholders voting to approve to increase the number of authorized shares from 2 billion to 4 billion.</p>\n<p>Due to a quirk in this particular case (more on that in a minute), while it <i>appears</i> investors have already missed the opportunity to take advantage of the NVIDIA stock split, that simply isn't the case.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/10b74b78ba82e9df1e981738dfafe1bc\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>The devil's in the details</h3>\n<p>At the company's 2021 annual meeting of stockholders, which was held on June 3, shareholders approved the measure to increase the number of outstanding shares, setting the stage for the stock split to move forward. Each shareholder of record <i>as of June 21</i> will receive three additional shares of NVIDIA stock for each <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> they own, which will be distributed after the market close on July 19. The stock will start trading on a split-adjusted basis when the market opens on Tuesday, July 20.</p>\n<p>To give some context to the numbers, here's an example of how it will work, though the final numbers will vary based on the then-current stock price. For each share of NVIDIA stock that an investor holds -- currently worth roughly $760 -- post-split, shareholders would own a total of four shares priced at $190 each.</p>\n<h3>The odd quirk</h3>\n<p>What sets NVIDIA's stock split apart from many others is the extraordinary length of time between the record date and the distribution date of the new, split shares. The record date is the date by which investors must own the stock in order to be eligible to receive additional shares created by the stock split, which occurs on the effective date. Typically, there are just a few days between the two.</p>\n<p>For example, in the recent 10-for-one stock split initiated by <b>The Trade Desk</b> (NASDAQ:TTD), shareholders of record as of June 9, 2021 received nine additional shares of stock, which were distributed after the close of trading on June 16, 2021 -- or a period of about a week after the record date. This was very similar to a couple of high-profile stock splits that happened late last year. <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL) and <b>Tesla</b> (NASDAQ:TSLA) each split their shares in August, with record dates of Aug. 24 and Aug. 21, respectively, and both stocks began trading split-adjusted&nbsp;on Aug. 31.</p>\n<p>In the case of NVIDIA, however, the period between the two is a whopping four weeks long. So what happens to investors who buy between the record date and the effective date? In this case, NVIDIA's stock split goes ex-dividend on July 19, according to a spokesperson for brokerage house <b>Charles Schwab</b>.</p>\n<p>This means that investors can buy NVIDIA shares right up to July 19, and still be eligible to receive the additional shares from the stock split once the shares begin trading on a split-adjusted basis when the market opens July 20.</p>\n<p>It's also important to point out that this stock split doesn't do anything to change the underlying value of NVIDIA as a company -- it merely cleaves it into a greater number of ownership segments. In conjunction with its fiscal 2022 first-quarter earnings report (ended May 2, 2021), the chipmaker announced that its board of directors declared a four-for-one stock split, payable in the form of a stock dividend. This move was conditional on NVIDIA stockholders voting to approve to increase the number of authorized shares from 2 billion to 4 billion.\nDue to a quirk in this particular case (more on that in a minute), while it appears investors have already missed the opportunity to take advantage of the NVIDIA stock split, that simply isn't the case.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nThe devil's in the details\nAt the company's 2021 annual meeting of stockholders, which was held on June 3, shareholders approved the measure to increase the number of outstanding shares, setting the stage for the stock split to move forward. Each shareholder of record as of June 21 will receive three additional shares of NVIDIA stock for each one they own, which will be distributed after the market close on July 19. The stock will start trading on a split-adjusted basis when the market opens on Tuesday, July 20.\nTo give some context to the numbers, here's an example of how it will work, though the final numbers will vary based on the then-current stock price. For each share of NVIDIA stock that an investor holds -- currently worth roughly $760 -- post-split, shareholders would own a total of four shares priced at $190 each.\nThe odd quirk\nWhat sets NVIDIA's stock split apart from many others is the extraordinary length of time between the record date and the distribution date of the new, split shares. The record date is the date by which investors must own the stock in order to be eligible to receive additional shares created by the stock split, which occurs on the effective date. Typically, there are just a few days between the two.\nFor example, in the recent 10-for-one stock split initiated by The Trade Desk (NASDAQ:TTD), shareholders of record as of June 9, 2021 received nine additional shares of stock, which were distributed after the close of trading on June 16, 2021 -- or a period of about a week after the record date. This was very similar to a couple of high-profile stock splits that happened late last year. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) each split their shares in August, with record dates of Aug. 24 and Aug. 21, respectively, and both stocks began trading split-adjusted on Aug. 31.\nIn the case of NVIDIA, however, the period between the two is a whopping four weeks long. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Amazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.</p>\n<p>By 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Amazon</b>: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of<b>20.4</b>times</li>\n <li><b>Apple</b>: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of<b>21.2</b>times</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Given enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.</p>\n<p><b>Which is the best bet?</b></p>\n<p>If Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.</p>\n<p>From the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.</p>\n<p>Clearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.</p>\n<p>First, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.</p>\n<p>This is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.</p>\n<p>Regarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. The green- and brown-field revenue growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud seem better.</p>\n<p>In addition, Amazon’s margins could expand substantially (see five-year trend below), if or once the company’s online retail business gets closer to maturity. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.</p>\n<p>Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.</p>\n<p>As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.</p>\n<p>This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.</p>\n<p>Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.</p>\n<p>Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”</p>\n<p>As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know do<i>not</i>want to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.</p>\n<p>What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.</p>\n<p>This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.</p>\n<p>However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.</p>\n<p><b>Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential</b></p>\n<p>I’m talking about&nbsp;<b>Nio, Inc.</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio back in February.</p>\n<p>The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.</p>\n<p>The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies like<b>NVIDIA Corporation</b>(NASDAQ:<b>NVDA</b>), another one of my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.</p>\n<p>With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.</p>\n<p>That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.</p>\n<p>Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”</p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Data is also due on housing and the Fed's preferred inflation gauge.\n\"I expect Powell will try to reverse some of the damage last week's Fed meeting did,\" said Tom Graff, head of fixed income at Brown Advisory. \"I don't think they intended to communicate such a hawkish message.\"\nGraff pointed to the yield curve on Monday \"steepening a little which might show the market is expecting a little reversal.\"\nIn prepared remarks from Powell released by the Fed late Monday afternoon ahead of the his congressional hearing, the Fed chairman said he regards the current jump in inflation, in fact, as likely to fade.\n\"I think that this is just a continuation of what they said last week that things are improving, things are getting better but we're not there yet, and I think that's what this speaks to,\" said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, Connecticut.\nREFLATION TRADE IN DANGER?\nAt stake is the market's view on whether the Fed has grown hawkish enough to endanger the so-called reflation trade, a bet on a powerful U.S. growth revival that has over the last several months helped boost prices for shares of economically sensitive companies, while weighing on the dollar and lifting yields. Some of those trades unwound last week.\n\"We saw big drama playing out in some of the reflation trades,\" said Thanos Bardas, co-head of global investment-grade fixed income at Neuberger Berman.\n\"The market over-reaction was pretty evident,\" he said, adding that he expects cooler heads to prevail this week.\nOthers also saw a reversal of some of those positions likely. Analysts at TD Securities said the yield curve flattening had been \"extreme.\"\nThe yield curve flattens when shorter-dated rates, which are more sensitive to interest-rate policy, move faster than longer-dated rates, indicating investors believe monetary policy could tighten before the economy has fully recovered from the coronavirus recession.\n\"This past week showed crowded investor positioning for a steepening curve can cause the boat to flip over as flattening can occur quickly on any disinflationary developments,\" said Matt Miskin, co-chief investment strategist, John Hancock Investment Management.\nThe Cboe Volatility Index, an options based measure of expectations for stock market gyrations, fell on Monday after touching a 4-week high earlier in the session.
