This is helping to fuel acquisitions, hiring, and (most importantly) innovation.</p>\n<p>Yet for some companies, their exponential growth is just beginning. For each of the following hypergrowth stocks, Wall Street's consensus sales estimate for 2023, courtesy of <b>FactSet</b>, implies a revenue increase ranging from a low of 1,185% (yes, <i>a low of 1,185%</i>) to a high of 12,629%, compared to 2020 sales.</p>\n<h2>Moderna: Implied sales increase of 1,185%</h2>\n<p>Arguably the best-known name on this list is biotech <b>Moderna</b> (NASDAQ:MRNA). According to Wall Street, Moderna's annual revenue is expected to catapult from the $803.4 million recorded in 2020 to an estimated $10.33 billion in 2023. Interestingly, the $10.33 billion in projected sales for 2023 is about half of the $20.13 billion forecast this year.</p>\n<p>As a lot of you probably know, Modena's success is tied to the development of its coronavirus vaccine mRNA-1273. When the company ran a large-scale study of its COVID-19 vaccine, the results (released in November) demonstrated a vaccine efficacy (VE) of 94% and a strong propensity to keep vaccinated individuals from getting severe forms of the disease. This initial VE made Moderna's COVID vaccine a slam dunk for Emergency Use Authorization in the United States.</p>\n<p>When the company announced its second-quarter operating results on Aug. 5, it stuck to its original forecast of delivering between 800 million and 1 billion doses in 2021, with net product sales of around $20 billion. Next year, Moderna believes it can provide between 2 billion and 3 billion doses. As a reminder, the Moderna vaccine is a two-dose regimen, meaning its 2022 output could fully inoculate 1 billion to 1.5 billion people.</p>\n<p>Also working in Modena's favor is the possibility of booster vaccinations. The mutability of COVID, coupled with a handful of studies suggesting that VE begins waning at the six-month mark, could create a recurring vaccination need globally.</p>\n<p>While Moderna might sound like a surefire growth story, there are still big question marks about its future. For example, even though mRNA-1273 has been wildly successful, it's the only therapy that's generating sales for the company. Moderna's non-COVID pipeline looks to be years away from bringing in meaningful revenue.</p>\n<p>Equally concerning is the likelihood that the COVID vaccine space is going to become crowded. At some point soon, <b>Novavax</b>&nbsp;should join the field with a formidable initial VE of about 90%. It is also working on a combination COVID/influenza vaccine, which would be a differentiator and game changer.</p>\n<p>Not to take anything away from what Moderna has done, but a $150 billion market cap for a company with a single therapy seems awfully risky.</p>\n<h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZGNX\">Zogenix</a>: Implied sales increase of 2,451%</h2>\n<p>Another biotech stock that's expected to generate jaw-dropping sales growth through 2023 is small-cap <b>Zogenix</b> (NASDAQ:ZGNX). If Wall Street's consensus estimate proves accurate, the company's $13.64 million in reported sales in 2020 could grow to $348 million by 2023.</p>\n<p>Like Moderna, there's a single drug that looks to do all of the heavy lifting for Zogenix over the next couple of years: Fintepla. This is a drug targeted at a variety of seizure-related indications. It's already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat Dravet syndrome. And Zogenix has plans to file a supplemental new drug application by the end of the current quarter to expand Fintepla's label to include Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Both Dravet and LGS are rare forms of childhood-onset epilepsy. If approved, Zogenix could launch Fintepla for LGS patients in this country by as early as the first half of 2022.</p>\n<p>And Zogenix still isn't done with Fintepla. After hashing out the finer points with the FDA, the company intends to initiate a phase 3 study involving Fintepla as a treatment for CDKL5 deficiency disorder before the end of the year. Thus, organic growth and label expansion opportunities are expected to fuel sales of Fintepla to almost $350 million in three years.</p>\n<p>What'll be particularly interesting is how Zogenix fares against cannabinoid-focused drug developer GW Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by <b>Jazz Pharmaceuticals</b> (NASDAQ:JAZZ) in May. GW's lead drug, Epidiolex, is a cannabidiol-based treatment that's been approved by the FDA to treat Dravet syndrome and LGS, and it launched in advance of Zogenix's Fintepla. For comparative purposes, Jazz announced that Epidiolex brought home $155.9 million in sales just in the second quarter, although it has an additional indication under its belt (tuberous sclerosis complex) where it won't compete against Zogenix.</p>\n<p>Although Epidiolex appears to have the upper hand now, it's worth noting that seizure-reduction efficacy for Fintepla looked very promising in late-stage clinical trials. To be 100% clear, the GW Pharma and Zogenix studies were never pitted head-to-head, and their baseline parameters are different. Nevertheless, Fintepla led to a 62.3% reduction in mean monthly convulsive seizure frequency compared to placebo at the six-week mark for Dravet syndrome patients.</p>\n<p>Comparatively, Jazz's Epidiolex demonstrated reductions in seizure frequency from baseline of 56% and 47%, respectively, for the lower- and higher-dose treatments in phase 3 studies in Dravet syndrome patients.&nbsp; Suffice it to say, these could be highly competitive indications for the foreseeable future.</p>\n<h2>Marathon Digital Holdings: Implied sales increase of 12,629%</h2>\n<p>Now, if you want pedal-to-the-metal growth, look no further than <b>Marathon Digital Holdings</b> (NASDAQ:MARA). After reporting a meager $4.36 million in sales in 2020, Wall Street anticipates full-year sales will climb to $555 million by 2023. That's an increase of 12,629%.</p>\n<p>If you're wondering how sales growth of this magnitude is possible for a company not involved in drug development, look no further than cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p>Marathon Digital is a cryptocurrency mining company. It operates a farm of high-powered computing devices designed to solve complex mathematical equations that validate groups of transactions (known as a block) as valid on a digital currency's blockchain. For being the first to validate a block, Marathon is paid a block reward. This reward is typically a set amount of digital tokens from the digital currency being mined.</p>\n<p>In Marathon's case, it's mining <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC), the largest cryptocurrency in the world by market cap. Being the first to mine a Bitcoin block results in the company being awarded 6.25 Bitcoin tokens, which were worth a cool $292,000, as of Aug. 30.</p>\n<p>The reason Marathon's sales are skyrocketing so quickly is because it's in the midst of deploying <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the largest Bitcoin-mining operations in the United States. As of the beginning of August, approximately 30,100 miners were operating, with another 103,000 ordered and yet to be installed. By the end of the first quarter of 2022, Marathon should have north of 100,000 miners in operation, with all 133,120 up and running by July 2022.</p>\n<p>Though Marathon is the fastest-growing of these three hypergrowth stocks, it's also arguably the most dangerous investment of this trio. That's because it's entirely dependent on external factors, such as interest in, and the price of, Bitcoin -- and not innovation.</p>\n<p>What's more, the barrier to entry in the cryptocurrency mining space is virtually nonexistent. As time passes, it's going to be tougher for Marathon to successfully mine Bitcoin.</p>\n<p>As the icing on the cake, Bitcoin's block rewards halve every four years. By 2024, only 3.125 Bitcoin tokens will be paid for validating a block. Essentially, Marathon is competing against a growing number of mining companies for a reward that's shrinking. Interestingly, the $10.33 billion in projected sales for 2023 is about half of the $20.13 billion forecast this year.\nAs a lot of you probably know, Modena's success is tied to the development of its coronavirus vaccine mRNA-1273. When the company ran a large-scale study of its COVID-19 vaccine, the results (released in November) demonstrated a vaccine efficacy (VE) of 94% and a strong propensity to keep vaccinated individuals from getting severe forms of the disease. This initial VE made Moderna's COVID vaccine a slam dunk for Emergency Use Authorization in the United States.\nWhen the company announced its second-quarter operating results on Aug. 5, it stuck to its original forecast of delivering between 800 million and 1 billion doses in 2021, with net product sales of around $20 billion. Next year, Moderna believes it can provide between 2 billion and 3 billion doses. As a reminder, the Moderna vaccine is a two-dose regimen, meaning its 2022 output could fully inoculate 1 billion to 1.5 billion people.\nAlso working in Modena's favor is the possibility of booster vaccinations. The mutability of COVID, coupled with a handful of studies suggesting that VE begins waning at the six-month mark, could create a recurring vaccination need globally.\nWhile Moderna might sound like a surefire growth story, there are still big question marks about its future. For example, even though mRNA-1273 has been wildly successful, it's the only therapy that's generating sales for the company. Moderna's non-COVID pipeline looks to be years away from bringing in meaningful revenue.\nEqually concerning is the likelihood that the COVID vaccine space is going to become crowded. At some point soon, Novavax should join the field with a formidable initial VE of about 90%. It is also working on a combination COVID/influenza vaccine, which would be a differentiator and game changer.\nNot to take anything away from what Moderna has done, but a $150 billion market cap for a company with a single therapy seems awfully risky.\nZogenix: Implied sales increase of 2,451%\nAnother biotech stock that's expected to generate jaw-dropping sales growth through 2023 is small-cap Zogenix (NASDAQ:ZGNX). If Wall Street's consensus estimate proves accurate, the company's $13.64 million in reported sales in 2020 could grow to $348 million by 2023.\nLike Moderna, there's a single drug that looks to do all of the heavy lifting for Zogenix over the next couple of years: Fintepla. This is a drug targeted at a variety of seizure-related indications. It's already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat Dravet syndrome. And Zogenix has plans to file a supplemental new drug application by the end of the current quarter to expand Fintepla's label to include Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Both Dravet and LGS are rare forms of childhood-onset epilepsy. If approved, Zogenix could launch Fintepla for LGS patients in this country by as early as the first half of 2022.\nAnd Zogenix still isn't done with Fintepla. After hashing out the finer points with the FDA, the company intends to initiate a phase 3 study involving Fintepla as a treatment for CDKL5 deficiency disorder before the end of the year. Thus, organic growth and label expansion opportunities are expected to fuel sales of Fintepla to almost $350 million in three years.\nWhat'll be particularly interesting is how Zogenix fares against cannabinoid-focused drug developer GW Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Jazz Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:JAZZ) in May. GW's lead drug, Epidiolex, is a cannabidiol-based treatment that's been approved by the FDA to treat Dravet syndrome and LGS, and it launched in advance of Zogenix's Fintepla. For comparative purposes, Jazz announced that Epidiolex brought home $155.9 million in sales just in the second quarter, although it has an additional indication under its belt (tuberous sclerosis complex) where it won't compete against Zogenix.\nAlthough Epidiolex appears to have the upper hand now, it's worth noting that seizure-reduction efficacy for Fintepla looked very promising in late-stage clinical trials. To be 100% clear, the GW Pharma and Zogenix studies were never pitted head-to-head, and their baseline parameters are different. Nevertheless, Fintepla led to a 62.3% reduction in mean monthly convulsive seizure frequency compared to placebo at the six-week mark for Dravet syndrome patients.\nComparatively, Jazz's Epidiolex demonstrated reductions in seizure frequency from baseline of 56% and 47%, respectively, for the lower- and higher-dose treatments in phase 3 studies in Dravet syndrome patients.  Suffice it to say, these could be highly competitive indications for the foreseeable future.\nMarathon Digital Holdings: Implied sales increase of 12,629%\nNow, if you want pedal-to-the-metal growth, look no further than Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA). After reporting a meager $4.36 million in sales in 2020, Wall Street anticipates full-year sales will climb to $555 million by 2023. That's an increase of 12,629%.\nIf you're wondering how sales growth of this magnitude is possible for a company not involved in drug development, look no further than cryptocurrencies.\nMarathon Digital is a cryptocurrency mining company. It operates a farm of high-powered computing devices designed to solve complex mathematical equations that validate groups of transactions (known as a block) as valid on a digital currency's blockchain. For being the first to validate a block, Marathon is paid a block reward. This reward is typically a set amount of digital tokens from the digital currency being mined.\nIn Marathon's case, it's mining Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), the largest cryptocurrency in the world by market cap. Being the first to mine a Bitcoin block results in the company being awarded 6.25 Bitcoin tokens, which were worth a cool $292,000, as of Aug. 30.\nThe reason Marathon's sales are skyrocketing so quickly is because it's in the midst of deploying one of the largest Bitcoin-mining operations in the United States. As of the beginning of August, approximately 30,100 miners were operating, with another 103,000 ordered and yet to be installed. By the end of the first quarter of 2022, Marathon should have north of 100,000 miners in operation, with all 133,120 up and running by July 2022.\nThough Marathon is the fastest-growing of these three hypergrowth stocks, it's also arguably the most dangerous investment of this trio. Blue Origin's New Shepard is a small, suborbital rocket that takes off vertically from a launch pad, giving a shorter yet higher-speed experience than the aerial-launched space plane created by Branson's Virgin Galactic. But much like Virgin Galactic's plane, New Shepard is designed to shuttle paying customers more than dozens of miles above the Earth's surface for a few moments of weightlessness and panoramic views of the Earth.</p>\n<p>New Shepard has flown 15 automated test flights with no people on board, and Bezos announced in early June that he intended to be on the first-ever crewed flight, which is slated for July 20.</p>\n<p>The public will be able to watch the whole thing go down on Blue Origin's livestream, where it will show exterior shots of the rocket and capsule shooting up toward the cosmos. (Shots of the interior — and Bezos' facial expressions — won't be released until after the flight.) The missions is expected to kick off Tuesday after 8 am ET, weather permitting.</p>\n<p>Here's everything you need to know before the big event.</p>\n<p>Who's going?</p>\n<p>Though the New Shepard capsule can carry up to six people, Bezos is bringing just three others along on this inaugural journey. They include his brother, Mark Bezos; Wally Funk, an 82-year-old pilot and one of the \"Mercury 13\" women; and an 18-year old recent high school graduate named Oliver Daemen.</p>\n<p>Bezos was supposed to fly alongside a mystery bidder who won a recent Blue Origin auction by agreeing to pay $28 million for a seat on the flight, but the company announced Thursday that the person, who asked to remain anonymous for the time being, had to bow out because of \"scheduling conflicts.\" Daemen — whose father, Dutch investment firm founder Joes Daemen, paid for his ticket — will fly in the auction winner's place.</p>\n<p>What will happen?</p>\n<p>When most people think about spaceflight, they think about an astronaut circling the Earth, floating in space, for at least a few days.</p>\n<p>That is not what the Bezos brothers and their fellow passengers will be doing.</p>\n<p>They'll be going up and coming right back down, and they'll be doing it in less time, about 11 minutes, than it takes most people to get to work.</p>\n<p>Visually, Blue Origin's livestream will look much the same as most of the New Shepard test launches of years past have looked: The rocket and capsule will be sitting on a launch pad at Blue Origin's private facilities in rural Texas — near Van Horn, which is about 120 miles east of El Paso.</p>\n<p>New Shepard'ssuborbital fightshit about three times the speed of sound — roughly 2,300 miles per hour — and fly directly upward until the rocket expends most of its fuel. The crew capsule will then separate from the rocket at the top of the trajectory and briefly continue upward before the capsule almost hovers at the top of its flight path, giving the passengers a few minutes of weightlessness. It works sort of like an extended version of the weightlessness you experience when you reach the peak of a roller coaster hill, just before gravity brings your cart — or, in Bezos' case, your space capsule -- screaming back down toward the ground.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57e4eb7fb3b4232ed059ea25d202fdc1\" tg-width=\"780\" tg-height=\"438\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>A graphic that shows the flight profile of Blue Origin's New Shepard.</span></p>\n<p>The New Shepard capsule then deploys a large plume of parachutes to slow its descent to less than 20 miles per hour before it hits the ground, and Bezos and his fellow passengers will be further cushioned by shock-absorbent seats.</p>\n<p>The rocket, flying separately after having detached from the human-carrying capsule, will then re-ignite its engines and use its on-board computers to execute a pinpoint, upright landing. The booster landing looks similar to what SpaceX does with its Falcon 9 rockets, though those rockets are far more powerful than New Shepard and — yes — more prone to exploding on impact.</p>\n<p>A smattering of media will also be allowed in to watch the launch and interview Bezos and the other passengers after landing. CNN Business reporters will be on the ground during the flight and will post live updates on our site.</p>\n<p>How is this different from what SpaceX and Virgin Galactic do?</p>\n<p>Bezos' flight will come just nine days after British billionaire Richard Branson took his own supersonic joy ride to the edge of space, the result of a surprise announcement that came from his space company, Virgin Galactic, days after Bezos announced his intention to go to space.</p>\n<p>The two men's companies — and their PR machines — have since entered into a public back-and-forth, though the billionaires themselves have said they're not interested in racing to become the first to actually rocket into space aboard a craft they helped fund.</p>\n<p>But suborbital space tourism isn't all that Branson and Bezos are pursuing with their space ventures. Nor is it the largest or most important sector in the burgeoning commercial space industry.</p>\n<p>Branson, Musk and Bezos, however, have all been compared for years because of their similarities — all three men used fortune they accrued through other lines of business to pursue space-focused ventures. Here's how they break down:</p>\n<p>Elon Musk's SpaceX has for years been making headlines and breaking records with its rocket technology — and it is far different than what Blue Origin will debut on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>First off, SpaceX builds orbital rockets. Orbital rockets need to drum up enough power to hit at least 17,000 miles per hour, or what's known as orbital velocity, essentially giving a spacecraft enough energy to continue whipping around the Earth rather than being dragged immediately back down by gravity. That's how SpaceX is able to put satellites into orbit or carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.</p>\n<p>Suborbital flights, however, don't need to travel nearly as fast. They need only reach an altitude above the 50 miles mark — which the US government considers to mark the edge of outer space — or the 62-mile mark, which is internationally considered the demarcating line. Zoltan Pozsar, the global head of short-term interest rate strategy for Credit Suisse, says the hike—as small as it might seem to a layperson—was too big. “I was arguing that there is no need to adjust anything,” Pozsar says. The good news is that, assuming the future is like the past, the current bull market still has more months of life in store. The bad news is that the stock market's gains during those months are likely to be far more modest than what we've gotten used to over the last 12 months.</p><p>This suggests that we should not extrapolate the last 12 months' gains into the future.</p><p>My analysis takes issue with those analysts who argue that the stock market's strength over the last 12 months is a bullish omen. In fact there's nothing particularly unusual about how strong the market was coming off its March 23, 2020, low.</p><p>That may seem hard to believe, given that the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained an incredible 74.4% over the 12 months from that low. But there actually are three other bull markets since 1900 in the calendar maintained by Ned Davis Research in which the Dow rose even more over the 12 months subsequent to their beginnings. The bull market that began following the Great Financial Crisis was not <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of those three, but it came close: In the 12 months following the Mar. 9, 2009, low, for example, the DJIA gained 61.4%.</p><p>The general pattern is that bull markets typically are strongest right after they're born: More than half of bull markets' total gains are produced in their first 12 months, on average. Consider the average bull market in the Ned Davis calendar. Not counting the current <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>, there were 37 since 1900. Of them, nine--or 24%--didn't make it to their first birthdays. The remaining 28 lived to be 2.7 years old and during them the DJIA gained a total of 93.9%. If the current bull market is \"average,\" therefore, it will continue until November of next year--but produce only a modest gain from now until then.</p><p>Furthermore, the market's prospects may actually be more subdued because of its first-12-months strength. That's because there is a weak inverse correlation between a bull market's return it its first 12 months and how strong it is thereafter: Bull markets with the strongest first years tend not to last as long, or rise as far, as those bull markets that are slower to take off. (Note that this correlation is statistically weak, however, so you shouldn't make too much of it.)</p><p><b>What stock market return should you expect going forward?</b></p><p>What future equity return, then, should retirees and near-retirees assume in constructing their financial plans?</p><p>The efficient market hypothesis <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EMH.UK\">$(EMH.UK)$</a> tells us that the stock market's expected return at any given time is independent of what has happened up until that point. That's because the stock market is a forward-looking, discounting mechanism. So its future return will be a function of whether the future turns out to be better or worse than what is currently anticipated--not by how the market has performed up until now.</p><p>The stock market's has produced an inflation-adjusted total return of 6.0% annualized since 1793, according to research conducted by Edward McQuarrie, a professor emeritus at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University . So if you were agnostic about where we are in the stock market's cycle, and assuming the future is like the past, that's the expected return to imbed in your financial plans.</p><p>You may not adhere to the EMH, of course. Or you may worry that, since the stock market is overvalued currently according to any of a number of valuation measures, its expected return going forward is lower than average. The good news is that, assuming the future is like the past, the current bull market still has more months of life in store. The bad news is that the stock market's gains during those months are likely to be far more modest than what we've gotten used to over the last 12 months.This suggests that we should not extrapolate the last 12 months' gains into the future.My analysis takes issue with those analysts who argue that the stock market's strength over the last 12 months is a bullish omen. In fact there's nothing particularly unusual about how strong the market was coming off its March 23, 2020, low.That may seem hard to believe, given that the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained an incredible 74.4% over the 12 months from that low. But there actually are three other bull markets since 1900 in the calendar maintained by Ned Davis Research in which the Dow rose even more over the 12 months subsequent to their beginnings. The bull market that began following the Great Financial Crisis was not one of those three, but it came close: In the 12 months following the Mar. 9, 2009, low, for example, the DJIA gained 61.4%.The general pattern is that bull markets typically are strongest right after they're born: More than half of bull markets' total gains are produced in their first 12 months, on average. Consider the average bull market in the Ned Davis calendar. Not counting the current one, there were 37 since 1900. Of them, nine--or 24%--didn't make it to their first birthdays. The remaining 28 lived to be 2.7 years old and during them the DJIA gained a total of 93.9%. If the current bull market is \"average,\" therefore, it will continue until November of next year--but produce only a modest gain from now until then.Furthermore, the market's prospects may actually be more subdued because of its first-12-months strength. That's because there is a weak inverse correlation between a bull market's return it its first 12 months and how strong it is thereafter: Bull markets with the strongest first years tend not to last as long, or rise as far, as those bull markets that are slower to take off. (Note that this correlation is statistically weak, however, so you shouldn't make too much of it.)What stock market return should you expect going forward?What future equity return, then, should retirees and near-retirees assume in constructing their financial plans?The efficient market hypothesis $(EMH.UK)$ tells us that the stock market's expected return at any given time is independent of what has happened up until that point. That's because the stock market is a forward-looking, discounting mechanism. So its future return will be a function of whether the future turns out to be better or worse than what is currently anticipated--not by how the market has performed up until now.The stock market's has produced an inflation-adjusted total return of 6.0% annualized since 1793, according to research conducted by Edward McQuarrie, a professor emeritus at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University . So if you were agnostic about where we are in the stock market's cycle, and assuming the future is like the past, that's the expected return to imbed in your financial plans.You may not adhere to the EMH, of course.
