JD.com rose more than 5% in morning trading alongside news that the company has pushed through its Singles Day sales volume record.
The sales holiday had resulted in 311.4 billion yuan (about $48.6 billion) in transaction volume as of 2:09 p.m.; at that point there were several hours left in a now-extended Singles Day.
Last year JD volume hit 271.5 billion yuan (which doesn't directly translate into revenue as it's business transacted across its platforms).
As with Black Friday in the United States, Singles Day used to be a 24-hour sales event but has stretched out. JD offered a presale period from Oct. 20-Oct. 31, one reason that it's easier to break records now.
