This comes despite significantly lower revenue as the group recorded other gains compared to other losses the year before, and a lower share of losses of associated companies. Shares of the counter closed down 1.5 per cent or S$0.002 at S$0.133 on Friday (Nov 26).\nTHAI BEVERAGE PUBLIC CO LTD: The beverage company said on Friday (Nov 26) that it is mulling a price increase on its key products amid higher cost pressures that have set in with the pandemic. ThaiBev's company executives said this at a conference call on Friday evening after the firm reported a net profit of 24.6 billion baht (S$1 billion) for the full fiscal year 2021 ended September, some 8.3 per cent higher than earnings of 22.8 billion baht in the year-ago period. The S&amp;P 500 slipped 0.2% to close at 4,701.46, just 0.1% below its Nov. 18 record close of 4,704.54, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.4% to 15,84.23.</p>\n<p>What's driving the market?</p>\n<p>It was an ugly day for stock investors during a thinly traded Black Friday session, which was susceptible to big swings on alarming news from public health officials who were assessing a new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.</p>\n<p>Late in the session, the World Health Organization's technical advisory group assigned the B. 1.1.529 variant of the virus the Greek letter omicron and declared it a \"variant of concern,\" as it did with the delta variant.</p>\n<p>Fear of a new variant overshadowed the usual focus on U.S. Black Friday shopping day, which puts the focus on retailers as consumers shop for bargains.</p>\n<p>Particularly notable about the variant is the \"large number of mutations, some of which are concerning,\" the WHO group said in a statement. The mutations could make omicron more resistant to the current batch of vaccines.</p>\n<p>The discovery of the new COVID strain was announced on Friday by South Africa's health minister Joe Phaahla. He said scientists were concerned because of its high number of mutations and the dramatic surge in infections the country had seen over the past four or five days.</p>\n<p>\"The pandemic and COVID variants remain <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the biggest risks to markets, and are likely to continue to inject volatility over the next year(s),\" wrote Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer and chief market strategist at Truist Advisory Services, in a Friday note. \"It's hard to say at this point how lasting or impactful this latest variant will be for markets,\" the analyst wrote.</p>\n<p>The omicron strain has been detected in Botswana and in Hong Kong in travelers who had visited South Africa.</p>\n<p>\"The one bull in the China shop that could truly derail the global recovery has always been a new strain of Covid-19 that swept the world and caused the reimposition of mass social retractions,\" said Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst, at OANDA, in a note. \"All we know so far is the B. 1.1.529 is heavily mutated but markets are taking no chances.\"</p>\n<p>\"Just when you thought Covid was being controlled in a holiday shortened week,\" said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research, in emailed comments.</p>\n<p>Trading around the Thanksgiving holiday is often associated with lower trading volumes as traders typically wait until Monday to return to work. There was no U.S. economic data on the calendar for Friday.</p>\n<p>After new cases stabilized at 200 a day, South Africa reported more than 1,200 on Wednesday and 2,465 on Thursday.</p>\n<p>The U.K. government is banning flights from South Africa along with five other African nations, effective Friday.</p>\n<p>\"Predictably, energy, travel related and financials are the leading decliners and treasuries are rallying,\" wrote Jay Hatfield, CEO and portfolio manager at Infrastructure Capital Management, in emailed comments on Friday.</p>\n<p>\"It makes sense to have a market significant correction given the high level of uncertainty,\" the money manager wrote.</p>\n<p>\"At this stage very little is known,\" Deutsche Bank strategists, led by Jim Reid, told clients in a note. \"Mutations are often less severe so we shouldn't jump to conclusions but there is clearly a lot of concern about this one. Also South Africa is one of the world leaders in sequencing so we are more likely to see this sort of news originate from there than many countries. In premarket trading Wednesday morning as of 8 a.m. EDT, futures on the <b>Dow Jones Industrial Average </b>(DJINDICES:^DJI) were down 326 points to 33,857. Futures on the <b>S&amp;P 500 </b>(SNPINDEX:^GSPC) dropped 48 points to 4,286, and <b>Nasdaq Composite </b>(NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) futures fell 186 points to 14,470.</p>\n<p>Stock market volatility levels have been on the rise, and many investors are looking to protect themselves against further declines by looking to the options market. A key measure of volatility, the <b>CBOE Volatility Index </b>(VOLATILITYINDICES:^VIX), has seen a couple of its biggest spikes all year come in the last couple of weeks. That has some investors looking for ways to profit -- and this morning, they're turning to exchange-traded funds designed to try to track the VIX.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/22719786dce6b2278c6f4132a5bc86ff\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Volatility ETFs and the VIX</h3>\n<p>The ETF universe has found ways to invest in nearly anything, and volatility is no exception. Because there's no way to invest directly in movements in the VIX, volatility ETFs concentrate on VIX futures contracts.</p>\n<p>One relatively simple exchange-traded volatility product is <b>iPath Series B S&amp;P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures </b>(NYSEMKT:VXX). This security is designed to track the daily movements in the front month and second month VIX futures contracts. Given this morning's rise in anticipated volatility, shares of the iPath volatility product are up more than 4% in pre-market trading.</p>\n<p>A similar product is <b>ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF </b>(NYSEMKT:VIXY). It uses a slightly different methodology in selecting futures contracts to achieve the same goal. It's also up nearly 4% as of 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Those investors seeking an even larger gain from rising volatility levels can use leveraged volatility ETFs. The <b>ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF </b>(NYSEMKT:UVXY) offers moves that are 1.5 times the corresponding daily movement of various VIX futures contracts. That multiple has the ProShares fund up nearly 6% in the pre-market session Wednesday.</p>\n<h3>The dangers of volatility ETFs</h3>\n<p>Investing in volatility is dangerous. The first thing to keep in mind is that these products are all designed to tie to <i>daily </i>returns, and that makes them less than ideal for long-term investors. For instance, looking at the iPath's history, it lost money every single year from 2009 to 2017, eked out a tiny positive return in 2018, lost two-thirds of its value in 2019, and climbed just 11% in 2020's turbulent stock market year. It's down more than 60% so far in 2021.</p>\n<p>However, the massive returns you can earn if you have perfect timing are tempting. From mid-February to mid-March in 2020, the iPath product jumped more than 320%. The ProShares Ultra volatility ETF gained nearly 700%. But you do have to have perfect timing on both ends -- by the end of April 2020, the funds had given back 50% to 60% of those gains. By the end of the year, the ProShares fund had actually dropped back to a net loss after its huge spike.</p>\n<p>Because of their big daily moves, volatility ETFs are attractive to short-term traders. For long-term investors, though, the better way to play volatility is to have cash on hand to buy attractive stocks when they're cheap after a downswing. Focusing on all the things that could go wrong in the market, major stock indexes were poised to lose substantial ground when the market opens. In premarket trading Wednesday morning as of 8 a.m. EDT, futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) were down 326 points to 33,857. Futures on the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) dropped 48 points to 4,286, and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) futures fell 186 points to 14,470.\nStock market volatility levels have been on the rise, and many investors are looking to protect themselves against further declines by looking to the options market. A key measure of volatility, the CBOE Volatility Index (VOLATILITYINDICES:^VIX), has seen a couple of its biggest spikes all year come in the last couple of weeks. That has some investors looking for ways to profit -- and this morning, they're turning to exchange-traded funds designed to try to track the VIX.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nVolatility ETFs and the VIX\nThe ETF universe has found ways to invest in nearly anything, and volatility is no exception. Because there's no way to invest directly in movements in the VIX, volatility ETFs concentrate on VIX futures contracts.\nOne relatively simple exchange-traded volatility product is iPath Series B S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures (NYSEMKT:VXX). This security is designed to track the daily movements in the front month and second month VIX futures contracts. Given this morning's rise in anticipated volatility, shares of the iPath volatility product are up more than 4% in pre-market trading.\nA similar product is ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSEMKT:VIXY). It uses a slightly different methodology in selecting futures contracts to achieve the same goal. It's also up nearly 4% as of 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday.\nThose investors seeking an even larger gain from rising volatility levels can use leveraged volatility ETFs. The ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSEMKT:UVXY) offers moves that are 1.5 times the corresponding daily movement of various VIX futures contracts. That multiple has the ProShares fund up nearly 6% in the pre-market session Wednesday.\nThe dangers of volatility ETFs\nInvesting in volatility is dangerous. The first thing to keep in mind is that these products are all designed to tie to daily returns, and that makes them less than ideal for long-term investors. For instance, looking at the iPath's history, it lost money every single year from 2009 to 2017, eked out a tiny positive return in 2018, lost two-thirds of its value in 2019, and climbed just 11% in 2020's turbulent stock market year. It's down more than 60% so far in 2021.\nHowever, the massive returns you can earn if you have perfect timing are tempting. From mid-February to mid-March in 2020, the iPath product jumped more than 320%. The ProShares Ultra volatility ETF gained nearly 700%. But you do have to have perfect timing on both ends -- by the end of April 2020, the funds had given back 50% to 60% of those gains. By the end of the year, the ProShares fund had actually dropped back to a net loss after its huge spike.\nBecause of their big daily moves, volatility ETFs are attractive to short-term traders. For long-term investors, though, the better way to play volatility is to have cash on hand to buy attractive stocks when they're cheap after a downswing. Meanwhile, traders will also await more data on the U.S. economic recovery with the Labor Department's monthly jobs report later this week.</p>\n<p>The Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) November meeting will take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, with the policy statement and press conference from the meeting serving as the central bank's penultimate opportunity this year to announce formal plans to begin rolling back its crisis-era quantitative easing program. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>In late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/POWL\">Powell</a> suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"</p>\n<p>\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> economist Michelle Meyer in a note.</p>\n<p>\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.</p>\n<p>She noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. In previous public remarks, Powell has already made a similar point in previous public remarks, saying, \"the timing and pace of the coming reduction in asset purchases will not be intended to carry a direct signal regarding the timing of interest rate liftoff.\"</p>\n<p>Given the market has been anticipating the start to tapering for months now, speculation around when the Fed will make a move on interest rates has become a point of particular interest to investors. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> and economists have mulled whether the Fed may need to act more quickly than previously telegraphed on adjusting interest rates to stave off inflation, which has proven more long-lasting than some had suggested.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f0f0ae63a784eef5578397df02340483\" tg-width=\"4932\" tg-height=\"3288\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 24: Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell testifies during a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Capitol Hill on September 24, 2020 in Washington, DC. And earlier this month, Powell acknowledged in public remarks that the supply chain constraints and shortages that spurred the latest rise in prices are \"likely to last longer than previously expected, likely well into next year.\"</p>\n<p>While the central bank will not release an updated Summary of Economic Projections with their policy statement on Wednesday, the latest projections from the September meeting suggested the committee was split on rate hikes for 2022, with nine members seeing no rate hikes by the end of next year while the other nine members saw at least <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike.</p>\n<p>\"I think the Fed has pretty well determined to start the taper pretty quickly. We expect them to announce it next week and then start it soon thereafter, so that's pretty well carved in stone,\" Kathy Jones, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SCHW\">Charles Schwab</a> chief fixed income strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live last week. \"I think the big debate now is how quickly the Fed moves toward actually raising rates. The expectation in the market has really shifted to expecting as many as two rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 ... that’s a pretty aggressive pace of tightening.\"</p>\n<h2>October jobs report</h2>\n<p>One of this week's most closely watched pieces of economic data will be the October jobs report, which is due for release on Friday from the Labor Department.</p>\n<p>Economists are looking to see a pick-up in the pace of hiring for October after a disappointing print in September, when just 194,000 non-farm payrolls returned versus the half million expected. Over the past two months, payroll gains averaged at just 280,000. The unemployment rate is expected to take another small step toward pre-pandemic levels in October as well, with the jobless rate anticipated to dip to 4.7% from 4.8% the prior month.</p>\n<p>Still, the labor market has still fallen short its pre-pandemic conditions on a number of fronts. The unemployment rate has yet to return to its 50-year low of 3.5% from February 2020. And as of September, the civilian labor force was still down by about 3.1 million individuals from pre-virus levels.</p>\n<p>One factor weighing on the labor market in August and September was the Delta variant, which may have deterred some workers from seeking employment in person for risk of infection. And an ongoing element dragging on the labor market's recovery has been a mismatch of supply and demand, with employers struggling to fill a near-record number of job openings while voluntary quits jumped to a historically high level.</p>\n<p>\"Next week’s October payrolls report will shed light on whether supply eased on diminishing constraints or if the labor market continues to face headwinds for now,\" wrote Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics, in a note last week.</p>\n<p>But some data from the past couple weeks has reflected favorably on conditions in the labor market in October. Weekly new unemployment claims broke below 300,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic during the survey week for the October jobs report, or the week that includes the 12th of the month. And in the Conference Board's October Consumer Confidence Index, just 10.6% of consumers said jobs were \"hard to get,\" down from 13.0% in September. Meanwhile, traders will also await more data on the U.S. economic recovery with the Labor Department's monthly jobs report later this week.\nThe Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) November meeting will take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, with the policy statement and press conference from the meeting serving as the central bank's penultimate opportunity this year to announce formal plans to begin rolling back its crisis-era quantitative easing program. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as one major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.\nIn late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"\n\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note.\n\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.\nShe noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. In previous public remarks, Powell has already made a similar point in previous public remarks, saying, \"the timing and pace of the coming reduction in asset purchases will not be intended to carry a direct signal regarding the timing of interest rate liftoff.\"\nGiven the market has been anticipating the start to tapering for months now, speculation around when the Fed will make a move on interest rates has become a point of particular interest to investors. And earlier this month, Powell acknowledged in public remarks that the supply chain constraints and shortages that spurred the latest rise in prices are \"likely to last longer than previously expected, likely well into next year.\"\nWhile the central bank will not release an updated Summary of Economic Projections with their policy statement on Wednesday, the latest projections from the September meeting suggested the committee was split on rate hikes for 2022, with nine members seeing no rate hikes by the end of next year while the other nine members saw at least one hike.\n\"I think the Fed has pretty well determined to start the taper pretty quickly. We expect them to announce it next week and then start it soon thereafter, so that's pretty well carved in stone,\" Kathy Jones, Charles Schwab chief fixed income strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live last week. \"I think the big debate now is how quickly the Fed moves toward actually raising rates. The expectation in the market has really shifted to expecting as many as two rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 ... that’s a pretty aggressive pace of tightening.\"\nOctober jobs report\nOne of this week's most closely watched pieces of economic data will be the October jobs report, which is due for release on Friday from the Labor Department.\nEconomists are looking to see a pick-up in the pace of hiring for October after a disappointing print in September, when just 194,000 non-farm payrolls returned versus the half million expected. Over the past two months, payroll gains averaged at just 280,000. The unemployment rate is expected to take another small step toward pre-pandemic levels in October as well, with the jobless rate anticipated to dip to 4.7% from 4.8% the prior month.\nStill, the labor market has still fallen short its pre-pandemic conditions on a number of fronts. The unemployment rate has yet to return to its 50-year low of 3.5% from February 2020. And as of September, the civilian labor force was still down by about 3.1 million individuals from pre-virus levels.\nOne factor weighing on the labor market in August and September was the Delta variant, which may have deterred some workers from seeking employment in person for risk of infection. And an ongoing element dragging on the labor market's recovery has been a mismatch of supply and demand, with employers struggling to fill a near-record number of job openings while voluntary quits jumped to a historically high level.\n\"Next week’s October payrolls report will shed light on whether supply eased on diminishing constraints or if the labor market continues to face headwinds for now,\" wrote Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics, in a note last week.\nBut some data from the past couple weeks has reflected favorably on conditions in the labor market in October. Weekly new unemployment claims broke below 300,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic during the survey week for the October jobs report, or the week that includes the 12th of the month. And in the Conference Board's October Consumer Confidence Index, just 10.6% of consumers said jobs were \"hard to get,\" down from 13.0% in September. Four of the top 10 most valuable auto makers are EV companies including: Tesla, Rivian,BYD&nbsp;(1211.Hong Kong), and&nbsp;NIO&nbsp;(NIO).</p>\n<p>As for the makers of conventional vehicles, more than 50 auto makers are worth a combined $1.42 trillion. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor&nbsp;(TM),Volkswagen&nbsp;(VOW3.Germany),Daimler&nbsp;(DAI.Germany), and&nbsp;General Motors&nbsp;(GM).</p>\n<p>Sales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.</p>\n<p>“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.</p>\n<p>That’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.</p>\n<p>That’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.</p>\n<p>The final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.</p>\n<p>The mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”</p>\n<p>His views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”</p>\n<p>Time will tell who is right. Even so, more than a quarter of stocks in the Nasdaq-100 are in bear markets -- down at least 20% from their 52-week highs.</p>\n<p>Before looking at those stocks, let's take a quick look at the Nasdaq-100 Index . It is made up of the largest 100 non-financial stocks in the full Nasdaq Composite Index and is weighted by market capitalization. The Nasdaq-100 has greatly outperformed the S&amp;P 500 index (which is also weighted by market cap) in recent years.</p>\n<p>Using exchange-traded funds that track both -- the Invesco QQQ Trust&nbsp;for the Nasdaq-100 and the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust, here is a 10-year chart showing total returns, with dividends reinvested:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/34899d434546efb8d27a49c4c6d1319b\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"620\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>FactSet</span></p>\n<p>One reason for QQQ's outperformance over the past 10 years has been its heavy concentration in giant tech companies. As of the close on Sept. 27, the top five companies held by QQQ (Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Tesla Inc.&nbsp;and two common-share classes of Alphabet Inc.&nbsp;(GOOGL)) made up 41.3% of the portfolio. Meanwhile the top five positions of SPY (the same, except replace Tesla with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a> Inc. (FB)) made up 22.6% of its portfolio.</p>\n<p>Another important difference between the indexes is the Nasdaq-100 includes American depositary receipts of some non-U.S. companies, while the S&amp;P 500 excludes ADRs. Even so, more than a quarter of stocks in the Nasdaq-100 are in bear markets -- down at least 20% from their 52-week highs.\nBefore looking at those stocks, let's take a quick look at the Nasdaq-100 Index . It is made up of the largest 100 non-financial stocks in the full Nasdaq Composite Index and is weighted by market capitalization. The Nasdaq-100 has greatly outperformed the S&P 500 index (which is also weighted by market cap) in recent years.\nUsing exchange-traded funds that track both -- the Invesco QQQ Trust for the Nasdaq-100 and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, here is a 10-year chart showing total returns, with dividends reinvested:\nFactSet\nOne reason for QQQ's outperformance over the past 10 years has been its heavy concentration in giant tech companies. As of the close on Sept. 27, the top five companies held by QQQ (Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Tesla Inc. and two common-share classes of Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL)) made up 41.3% of the portfolio.
