However, the meme stock is still up 38% year-to-date. But with BB stock down 8.9% in the last month and investors getting ready to turn the page on 2021, should speculative investors remain patient while BlackBerry’s business model comes to fruition?
\n
That’s a tough ask, but that’s different from saying it’s impossible. Right now, BB stock has a couple of long-term catalysts. However, investors looking at its current fundamentals may be scared away.
\n
Year-over-year revenue for the company’s first two quarters is down 26%. Help could be on the way in the form of revenue that the company intends to receive by selling many of its mobile device patents.
\n
It’s not surprising that BlackBerry is cutting ties from the namesake mobile device that made the company a household name. However, the emergence of the smartphone ended BlackBerry’s supremacy. Selling off the intellectual property will add some much needed revenue to the bottom-line.
\n
But the deal has taken some time and based on recent price action, investors are losing patience. Nevertheless, when the company last reported earnings, Chief Executive Officer John Chen said there was an 80% chance that the sale would be completed by the quarter’s end, which will occur in February 2022.
\n
The larger question, however, is how long investors will have to wait for the company’s other business units to deliver revenue.
\n
BlackBerry’s Future is Also Its Past
\n
I’ve always said I’m old enough to remember when the BlackBerry was a status symbol. But aside from being the precursor to our current smartphone addiction, many people loved the safety and security of their BlackBerry devices.
\n
This focus on cybersecurity is not just part of BlackBerry’s past, but it’s also a key element of the company’s future. In fact, cybersecurity solutions from BlackBerry QNX accounts for nearly 66% of BlackBerry’s revenue. And the global cybersecurity market is expected to be valued at $345.4 billion by 2026. As it is currently valued at $183.34 billion, that’s an increase of around 88% in the next five years.
\n
That’s not the only catalyst for BlackBerry. The company is also competing in the autonomous vehicle space with its Intelligent Vehicle Data Platform (IVY). This is a scalable, cloud-connected software program that BlackBerry is offering as a universal solution for connected vehicles. According to BlackBerry, the IVY system delivers on three key objectives.
\n
First, it accelerates development of “new in-vehicle customer experiences.” It also opens opportunities for connected vehicle manufacturers to expand their community of app developers. And it does all of that while streamlining costs.
\n
However, the real payoff for IVY won’t take place until automated vehicles become a reality. While analysts may disagree on the exact length of time for that to happen, it’s measured in years, not months.
\n
Analysts Are Sending Mixed Messages
\n
The consensus rating for BB stock is a Sell. However, analysts put the consensus 12-month price target for BlackBerry at $9.40. That’s a $7.67 upside. That means if there is a broader sell-off investors may want to consider buying BlackBerry at around $7.60.
\n
That would be in-line with the stock’s most recent rating from Paul Treiber of the Royal Bank of Canada. On Dec. 17, Treiber gave the stock an Underperform rating with a $7.50 price target.
\n
However, after a sharp selloff, BB stock is presenting investors with a potentially bullish technical pattern that may allow the stock to move higher, particularly if it beats expectations when it reports earnings.
\n
Can BB Stock Get it Right?
\n
I don’t currently own BB stock, but it is one of the meme stocks that I find intriguing. That’s because its underlying business plan has potential. However, it’s likely to be several years before that potential is realized. For that reason, I’ll be keeping BlackBerry on my watch list, but I’ll be staying on the sidelines until I hear more.
","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
BlackBerry is a Tough Buy That Will Test Investor Patience
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBlackBerry is a Tough Buy That Will Test Investor Patience\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-27 14:52 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
BlackBerry (NYSE:BB) has been under strong selling pressure in the last month. For that reason, I’ll be keeping BlackBerry on my watch list, but I’ll be staying on the sidelines until I hear more.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1043,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":698434101,"gmtCreate":1640488632226,"gmtModify":1640488632226,"author":{"id":"4092415789566660","authorId":"4092415789566660","name":"3ded04dd","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4092415789566660","idStr":"4092415789566660"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Like] ","listText":"[Like] ","text":"[Like]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/698434101","repostId":"2193781141","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2193781141","pubTimestamp":1640485676,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2193781141?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-26 10:27","market":"us","language":"en","title":"2 Top Tech Stocks to Buy During a Recession","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2193781141","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Market crashes are inevitable, but they're the perfect time to buy great businesses at a discount.","content":"
We're days away from the end of 2021, and the S&P 500 has put on a master class in outperforming expectations. But savvy investors don't have to worry. These events are not a problem when you're invested in the right companies. Being prepared for the worst and hoping for the best means when the next stock market crash or correction occurs, you'll want to have your money invested in stocks that will help lead the way forward. Here are two tech stocks you'll want to buy.
\n
1. Apple
\n
The burden that inflation is imposing on consumers also poses a threat to some of the biggest, best-run businesses, like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), which is currently benefiting from the smartphone upgrade cycle and the rollout of 5G network infrastructure. Any attempt by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates to contain runaway inflation could cause an economic slowdown by making money more expensive to borrow. Stock valuations would also turn lower.
\n
That's not necessarily bad news for investors who might find Apple's $2.8 trillion valuation a bit rich to buy into at the moment. Apple previously cut its iPhone production target by 10 million units from its original goal of 90 million.
\n
Analysts think many consumers may choose to forgo the iPhone 13 and wait for the next upgrade. Coupled with a market crash, that could put Apple stock at a very attractive entry point with pent-up demand for the next iteration of the iPhone.
\n
2. Amazon
\n
Few companies are as essential to the working of the U.S. economy as Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). It will account for 41.4% of all online spending in the U.S. this year, according to eMarketer estimates. At the same time, Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud infrastructure business, is on track to generate over $60 billion in annual revenue in 2021 based on its year-to-date performance. The company is responsible for thousands of web-based businesses and the federal government's ability to remain online, making Amazon crucial to a well-functioning economy.
\n
That won't change if the stock market collapses. Its share of U.S. retail e-commerce sales will be more than 50% larger than the shares of the next nine e-commerce companies combined. E-commerce data tracker Edge by Ascential expects Amazon will see $26.7 billion just in online grocery sales five from now years, or nearly double its current amount.
\n
Amid rising prices and supply chain woes, Amazon has become a lifeline for many, and that will continue long after any financial restructuring. They predict that there could be more visibility by mid-2022 when “vaccines, natural immunity, antivirals and better overall management experience with Covid should increase the likelihood of recovery.”\nContrasting its projections in early 2021, the bank avoids modeling “MedTech procedure volumes to rebound to above pre-Covid trend due to pent-up demand or backlog.\" The analysts expect the companies to indicate this in their initial forecasts for next year implying further room for downward revisions in Street forecasts which, according to them, could be the last COVID-induced revision to MedTech estimates.\nGoldman Sachs added Intuitive Surgical(NASDAQ:ISRG)to the firm’s conviction list, citing a potential launch of its multiport system in the first quarter. The maker of da Vinci Surgical System stands alongside Becton Dickinson(NYSE:BDX)and Zimmer Biomet(NYSE:ZBH)as a top large-cap pick in the space. However, the firm is less constructive on Stryker(NYSE:SYK), Medtronic(NYSE:MDT), Edwards Lifesciences(NYSE:EW), and Abbott(NYSE:ABT). See the graph below to compare how some of the above stocks have performed over the past year.\nAccording to Seeking Alpha Quant Ratings, none of the large-cap MedTech companies, including Abbott (ABT), Medtronic (MDT), Intuitive Surgical (ISRG), and Stryker (SYK), have Bullish prospects. The hospital operator HCA Healthcare(NYSE:HCA)is the only large-cap healthcare provider with a Bullish rating.\nMeanwhile, Goldman Sachs cites a favorable backdrop in managed care space. Despite the ongoing limits to procedure volumes amid labor constraints and shift to low-cost settings, the companies in the subsector are conservatively priced, implying the return of deferred care and COVID costs, the analysts argue.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":905,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":691218494,"gmtCreate":1640195245471,"gmtModify":1640195245471,"author":{"id":"4092415789566660","authorId":"4092415789566660","name":"3ded04dd","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4092415789566660","idStr":"4092415789566660"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Time to buy!","listText":"Time to buy!","text":"Time to buy!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/691218494","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":793,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":691218262,"gmtCreate":1640195197886,"gmtModify":1640195197886,"author":{"id":"4092415789566660","authorId":"4092415789566660","name":"3ded04dd","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4092415789566660","idStr":"4092415789566660"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👍","listText":"👍","text":"👍","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/691218262","repostId":"2193194239","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2193194239","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1640181006,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2193194239?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-22 21:50","market":"us","language":"en","title":"AWS down for some users on U.S. East coast due to power issues","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2193194239","media":"Reuters","summary":"Dec 22 - This top cloud stock remains a buy in my book following the earnings update for three reasons.
\n
1. The core business is still going strong
\n
Salesforce's revenue increased 23% year over year to $6.34 billion -- its first-ever quarter with over $6 billion in sales. Leading the charge with a more than 24% year-over-year increase to $1.88 billion was the largest of its four reporting segments, the \"platform and other\" unit, primarily made up of data management outfits MuleSoft and Tableau.
\n
Momentum is picking up, primarily because of the recent tie-up with Slack as well as the purchase of IT consulting firm Acumen Solutions, announced late in 2020. Slack and Acumen are expected to contribute $530 million and $200 million in revenue, respectively, during the second half of this year.
\n
Those are big numbers, but considering Salesforce overall is forecasting full-year revenue to be at least $26.2 billion (a 23% annual increase, and up from previous guidance for as much as $26 billion), it's Salesforce's existing core business that is still driving results higher right now.
\n
In all, the increase in the revenue forecast implies Salesforce's existing business will haul in some $260 million more than previously thought. Even when backing out recent takeovers, Salesforce is still growing at a high teens percentage rate, putting it on track to reach Benioff's goal of $50 billion in sales by fiscal year 2026 (which corresponds to calendar year 2025).
\n
2. Slack is the new \"digital HQ\" for many organizations
\n
As good as Salesforce's core business growth has been, there is still a fair amount of criticism for the Slack takeover. At some $28 billion paid out in a combination of cash and new Salesforce stock, it's by far Salesforce's largest purchase in a long string of takeovers that have augmented the CRM leader's operations over the past two decades.
\n
But Slack will be the biggest ever not just because of the price tag (management said stand-alone Slack sales grew 39% year over year in Q2, implying it brought in about $300 million in revenue). Salesforce has wasted no time making Slack the operating system for its Salesforce 360 CRM software suite.
\n
With remote work and cloud-based operations now cemented in place as part of the new business normal, having Slack at the core of the Salesforce platform is a big deal. As Benioff and his team referred to it on the earnings call, Slack -- as well as Zoom Video Communications (NASDAQ: ZM) -- are the new \"digital HQ\" for many organizations these days.
\n
Rather than commute to the office, many workers now make a far shorter trip to their home office and immediately log in to Slack to start their day. Slack is thus helping Salesforce land new customer deals and expand on existing ones. A long list of new and expanded relationships mentioned on the earnings call include IBM (NYSE: IBM), PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL), Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN), and Vodafone (NASDAQ: VOD).
\n
Price tag aside, I expect Slack will feature prominently in the years ahead as Salesforce increasingly goes toe-to-toe with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) as a leading enterprise software firm.
\n
3. A value-generation machine for stakeholders
\n
Even when factoring in all the costs associated with Salesforce's acquisition-heavy strategy, this is still a highly profitable outfit. It raised its expected operating profit margin for full-year fiscal 2022 to a range of 14% to 15% (from the previous 12% to 13%). Excluding acquisition-related expenses, free cash flow generated through the first half of this year was $3.23 billion, up 75% from the same period last year and good for a free cash flow profit margin of 26%.
\n
Of course, a common argument that's made is that Salesforce issues lots of new stock to pay for its expansion. As usual, I counter with this metric:An incredible growth in free cash flow per outstanding share over the last decade. This top cloud stock remains a buy in my book following the earnings update for three reasons.\n1. The core business is still going strong\nSalesforce's revenue increased 23% year over year to $6.34 billion -- its first-ever quarter with over $6 billion in sales. Leading the charge with a more than 24% year-over-year increase to $1.88 billion was the largest of its four reporting segments, the \"platform and other\" unit, primarily made up of data management outfits MuleSoft and Tableau.\nMomentum is picking up, primarily because of the recent tie-up with Slack as well as the purchase of IT consulting firm Acumen Solutions, announced late in 2020. Slack and Acumen are expected to contribute $530 million and $200 million in revenue, respectively, during the second half of this year.\nThose are big numbers, but considering Salesforce overall is forecasting full-year revenue to be at least $26.2 billion (a 23% annual increase, and up from previous guidance for as much as $26 billion), it's Salesforce's existing core business that is still driving results higher right now.\nIn all, the increase in the revenue forecast implies Salesforce's existing business will haul in some $260 million more than previously thought. Even when backing out recent takeovers, Salesforce is still growing at a high teens percentage rate, putting it on track to reach Benioff's goal of $50 billion in sales by fiscal year 2026 (which corresponds to calendar year 2025).\n2. Slack is the new \"digital HQ\" for many organizations\nAs good as Salesforce's core business growth has been, there is still a fair amount of criticism for the Slack takeover. At some $28 billion paid out in a combination of cash and new Salesforce stock, it's by far Salesforce's largest purchase in a long string of takeovers that have augmented the CRM leader's operations over the past two decades.\nBut Slack will be the biggest ever not just because of the price tag (management said stand-alone Slack sales grew 39% year over year in Q2, implying it brought in about $300 million in revenue). Salesforce has wasted no time making Slack the operating system for its Salesforce 360 CRM software suite.\nWith remote work and cloud-based operations now cemented in place as part of the new business normal, having Slack at the core of the Salesforce platform is a big deal. As Benioff and his team referred to it on the earnings call, Slack -- as well as Zoom Video Communications (NASDAQ: ZM) -- are the new \"digital HQ\" for many organizations these days.\nRather than commute to the office, many workers now make a far shorter trip to their home office and immediately log in to Slack to start their day. Slack is thus helping Salesforce land new customer deals and expand on existing ones. A long list of new and expanded relationships mentioned on the earnings call include IBM (NYSE: IBM), PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL), Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN), and Vodafone (NASDAQ: VOD).\nPrice tag aside, I expect Slack will feature prominently in the years ahead as Salesforce increasingly goes toe-to-toe with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) as a leading enterprise software firm.\n3. A value-generation machine for stakeholders\nEven when factoring in all the costs associated with Salesforce's acquisition-heavy strategy, this is still a highly profitable outfit. It raised its expected operating profit margin for full-year fiscal 2022 to a range of 14% to 15% (from the previous 12% to 13%). Excluding acquisition-related expenses, free cash flow generated through the first half of this year was $3.23 billion, up 75% from the same period last year and good for a free cash flow profit margin of 26%.\nOf course, a common argument that's made is that Salesforce issues lots of new stock to pay for its expansion. As usual, I counter with this metric:An incredible growth in free cash flow per outstanding share over the last decade. Even when taking Slack into account, Salesforce continues to deliver incredible profit growth for shareholders.\nData by YCharts.\nAt about 48 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, I say Salesforce stock is still a fantastic buy. This cloud computing leader is growing at a brisk pace, highly profitable, and quickly going from a CRM software niche to the very fabric of operations for thousands of organizations around the globe. No one can forecast exactly when it will strike, but smart investors realize it's best to prepare for the eventuality.
\n
For as long as people have been investing, stretching even as far back to the Dutch tulip mania in the 1600s, busts have followed booms. And what a boom we've enjoyed! Since the bottom of the Great Recession, the S&P 500 has quadrupled in value.
\n
2020's pandemic-driven 34% drop in the stock indexes within the span of just a few weeks was the worst on record.
The stock trades at 30 times trailing earnings, or about double its typical multiple. A correction would bring Apple back into the realm of the attainable, even as its business continues jogging forward.
\n
Sales of the iPhone 13 are outpacing those of the iPhone 12 at the same time, but Apple reportedly warned suppliers that demand is waning as the calendar year progresses. It's not necessarily for a lack of consumer desire, but rather the global supply chain constraints that have made it difficult to find the product.
Amazon's piece of the online market is nearly six times more than Walmart's second-place share at just 7.2%, and 10 times greater than third-place eBay.
The stock gained 76% during the first year of the pandemic and took a breather during the reopening of the economy. Amazon shares have been relatively flat all year long. For that reason, I’ll be keeping BlackBerry on my watch list, but I’ll be staying on the sidelines until I hear more.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1043,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":698228748,"gmtCreate":1640413587289,"gmtModify":1640413587358,"author":{"id":"4092415789566660","authorId":"4092415789566660","name":"3ded04dd","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4092415789566660","idStr":"4092415789566660"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Like] [Like] ","listText":"[Like] [Like] ","text":"[Like] [Like]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/698228748","repostId":"1198358760","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1198358760","pubTimestamp":1640396253,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1198358760?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-25 09:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"COVID uptick to hurt MedTech firms and healthcare providers in early 2022 - Goldman Sachs","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1198358760","media":"Seeking Alpha","summary":"The ongoing resurgence of the pandemic could limit recovery in hospital procedure volumes and delay ","content":"
\n

The ongoing resurgence of the pandemic could limit recovery in hospital procedure volumes and delay the rebound in MedTech procedures at least through early 2022, a team of analysts from Goldman Sachs argues.

\n
Issuing themes for portfolio set up in healthcare for 2022, the analysts led by Asad Haider warned last week that there could be at least one more COVID-19 wave with the rise of the Omicron variant of the virus.
\n
Despite the uncertainty over a timeline for the “normalization,” the team sees potential for the disease to reach endemic status in the intermediate term, benefitting certain commercial firms and those leveraged on hospitals and procedures.
\n
Focusing on the impact of such a scenario on utilization, the analysts turn their attention to MedTech, healthcare provision, and managed care.
\n
According to them, the resurgence of COVID-19 cases could hurt procedure volumes in H1 2022 and worsen the nursing shortages, which in turn could result in a slowdown in elective procedures and limit the recovery in surgery volumes before subsiding in H2 2022.
\n
“Expect relative underperformance to continue until at least the Spring, when a resetting of numbers and reduced hospital constraints could foster a recovery,” the analysts Amit Hazan and the team wrote. The move is part of Japan’s plans to sell oil in coordination with other consuming nations and more sales may follow, according to a ministry official, who declined to be identified because of internal policy.
\n
The Biden administration started tapping the first of its pledged 50 million barrels of reserves not long after announcing the coordinated release in late November. South Korea said last week that it will start releasing crude and oil products from its strategic reserves next month, although other countries named as part of the plan -- including China and India -- have yet to act.
\n
The inaugural volume offered by Japan is 100,000 kiloliters, according to a second ministry statement. The move is part of Japan’s plans to sell oil in coordination with other consuming nations and more sales may follow, according to a ministry official, who declined to be identified because of internal policy.\nThe Biden administration started tapping the first of its pledged 50 million barrels of reserves not long after announcing the coordinated release in late November. South Korea said last week that it will start releasing crude and oil products from its strategic reserves next month, although other countries named as part of the plan -- including China and India -- have yet to act.\nThe inaugural volume offered by Japan is 100,000 kiloliters, according to a second ministry statement. The ministry plans to announce additional sales, while monitoring the energy markets, the official said.\nAt present, there are signs of weakening oil demand in Asia given the rapid spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus. This top cloud stock remains a buy in my book following the earnings update for three reasons.
\n
Even when taking Slack into account, Salesforce continues to deliver incredible profit growth for shareholders.
\n
Data by YCharts.
\n
At about 48 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, I say Salesforce stock is still a fantastic buy. This cloud computing leader is growing at a brisk pace, highly profitable, and quickly going from a CRM software niche to the very fabric of operations for thousands of organizations around the globe. This top cloud stock remains a buy in my book following the earnings update for three reasons.
\n
Even when taking Slack into account, Salesforce continues to deliver incredible profit growth for shareholders.
\n
Data by YCharts.
\n
At about 48 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, I say Salesforce stock is still a fantastic buy.
