The stock has slid 16% since the beginning of November, even as the S&P 500 rose more than 2% over that same timeframe.
\n
But despite the stock's bearish trend recently, one analyst thinks the electric-car maker's shares will soar over the next 12 months. The analyst's updated price target for the stock calls for an impressive 55% upside from where shares closed on Friday. Based on Tesla's share count today, this implies a $1.6 trillion market capitalization.
\n
Here's why this analyst is so bullish.
\n
Tesla factory. Image source: The Motley Fool.
\n
55% upside?
\n
Last Wednesday, New Street analyst and longtime Tesla bull Pierre Ferragu boosted his 12-month price target on Tesla stock from $1,290 to $1,580.
\n
Ferragu justifies his price target with a view for record fourth-quarter deliveries, impressive production rates at the company's factory in Shanghai, huge revenue growth next year, and more.
\n
Starting with Ferragu's estimates for Tesla's fourth-quarter deliveries, he says that the electric-car company's deliveries could come in as high as 280,000 to 285,000 in Q4. The midpoint of this range would imply 56% year-over-year growth and 17% sequential growth -- an impressive feat in a supply constrained environment. This would put total deliveries for the year at 910,000, or about 87% higher than last year.
\n
The analyst also thinks that Tesla's total revenue next year can approach $80 billion. This is about $9 billion higher than the current consensus analyst estimate calls for. Notably, Ferragu believes that Tesla is now producing electric vehicles at its factory in China at an annualized rate of more than 700,000 -- well above what Tesla initially said the factory would do. Adding this production to Tesla's factory in Fremont and the company's new factories in Texas and Germany will help sales soar next year, the analyst believes.
\n
Valuation may be the biggest risk facing Tesla investors
\n
But the riskiest part of this thesis may be Ferragu's view on the high valuation he believes Tesla stock will command. Ferragu thinks Tesla can trade at 50 to 100 times earnings for the foreseeable future. While the electric-car maker definitely deserves to trade at a multiple like this today, based on the company's strong growth prospects, there's always a chance that growth slows materially in the future. If growth does slow materially over the next five years, Tesla's price-to-earnings ratio could fall below Ferragu's target range.
\n
Further, investors should note that Tesla has a price-to-earnings ratio of over 300 today. So there's already huge growth priced in from the electric-car maker. Of course, analysts agree that earnings are about to soar. On average, analysts believe that Tesla's earnings per share will increase at an average annualized rate of 73% over the next five years.
\n
So while Tesla stock is looking more attractive after its recent sell-off, there are still risks to owning shares -- particularly when it comes to the stock's sky-high valuation. Tesla will need to keep executing extremely well over the long haul in order for its stock to be an outperformer from this level.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Stock: Headed to $1,580?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTesla Stock: Headed to $1,580?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-13 07:57 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has taken a hit recently. Newspress","summary":"After a few days’ break, Elon Musk resumed selling shares in Tesla Inc., now coming more than halfwa","content":"
After a few days’ break, Elon Musk resumed selling shares in Tesla Inc., now coming more than halfway to making good on his promise to offload 10% of his stake in the electric-car maker.
\n
The billionaire sold an additional 934,091 shares for $1.05 billion, according to regulatory filings late on Tuesday U.S. time. He also exercised 2.15 million stock options, and the sales were made to cover the taxes related to that transaction, the documents showed.
\n
With the most recent disposals, Musk now has offloaded 9.2 million shares and collected about $9.9 billion of proceeds since he conducted a Twitter poll asking whether he should sell 10% of his Tesla stake. A chunk of that money will go to taxes.
\n

\n
To reach the 10% threshold, Musk would need to sell some 17 million shares, or about 1.7% of the company’s outstanding stock. If his exercisable options are factored into his overall ownership, he’d need to sell even more.
\n
Musk has exercised millions of options since the Twitter poll, all of which were less than a year from their expiration date. BioNTech's U.S.'s listed stock also tops the list, up by about 214%.\nDOW JONES MARKET DATA","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":92,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":877889272,"gmtCreate":1637912407476,"gmtModify":1637912407634,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Q & M DENTAL GROUP (S) LIMITED(QC7.SI)$Strong among the red sea","listText":"$Q & M DENTAL GROUP (S) LIMITED(QC7.SI)$Strong among the red sea","text":"$Q & M DENTAL GROUP (S) LIMITED(QC7.SI)$Strong among the red sea","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/877889272","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":166,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":810954467,"gmtCreate":1629941120459,"gmtModify":1631889364983,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Time to buy cloud security share ","listText":"Time to buy cloud security share ","text":"Time to buy cloud security share","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/810954467","repostId":"1149998641","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":14,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":836036103,"gmtCreate":1629435865602,"gmtModify":1631885195817,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$Time to be #1 again","listText":"$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$Time to be #1 again","text":"$SINGAPORE AIRLINES LTD(C6L.SI)$Time to be #1 again","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1fb92e0379042c6f13be6a94580beb87","width":"1125","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/836036103","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":406,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":831753088,"gmtCreate":1629352101644,"gmtModify":1633685464893,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/831753088","repostId":"1152703663","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":606820421,"gmtCreate":1638859255945,"gmtModify":1638859256198,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$OCEANUS GROUP LIMITED(579.SI)$Seem got some up trending ! In 2018, the Fed barred Wells Fargo from growing its balance sheet until it fixes compliance shortcomings revealed by thebank's fake accounts scandal.\nThe asset cap has ultimately cost the bank billions of dollars in lost earnings, based on the balance sheet growth of rivals includingJPMorgan ChaseandBank of Americaover the past three years, analysts havesaid.\nIt has also affected Wells Fargo's customers: Last year, the lender told staff it washalting allnew home equity lines of credit, CNBC reported. Months later, the bank also withdrew from a segment of theauto lending business.\nWith its latest move, Wells Fargo warned customers that the account closures \"may have an impact on your credit score,\" according to a Frequently Asked Questions segment of the letter.\nAnother part of the FAQ asserted that the account closures couldn't be reviewed or reversed: \"We apologize for the inconvenience this Line of Credit closure will cause,\" the bank said. \"The account closure is final.\"\n\"Simplify offerings\"\nWells Fargo didn't directly answer questions as to what role, if any, the Fed asset cap played in its latest move.\nThe bank gave this statement: \"In an effort to simplify our product offerings, we've made the decision to no longer offer personal lines of credit as we feel we can better meet the borrowing needs of our customers through credit card and personal loan products.\"\nCustomers have been given a 60-day notice that their accounts will be shuttered, and remaining balances will require regular minimum payments, according to the statement.\nThe move is a strange one given the banking industry's need to boost loan growth.\nAfter a burst of commercial lending during the early days of the pandemic, loan growth has been hard to muster. Corporations have used money raised in stock and debt issuance to retire bank credit lines, and consumers stuck at home had fewer reasons to use credit cards.\nIn fact, last year big banks experienced the first aggregate drop in loans in more than a decade, accordingto Barclays bank analyst Jason Goldberg. Of the four largest U.S. banks, Wells Fargo saw the worst decline.\nAfter banks saw that borrowers held up far better than they had initially feared, the industry recently began marketingnew credit cardswith large sign-on bonuses in an effort to boost lending.\nMaking the switch\nWells Fargo doesn't disclose how many customers used the credit lines it is eliminating. It had$24.9 billionin loans in a category called \"other consumer\" as of March, which was 26% lower than the year-earlier period.\nOne customer said the change is prompting him to switch banks after more than a decade with Wells Fargo. Tim Tomassi, a Portland, Oregon programmer, said that he used a personal line of credit linked to his checking account to avoid expensive overdraft fees.\n\"It's a bit upsetting,\" Tomassi said in a phone interview. \"They're a big bank, and I'm a small person, and it feels like they're making decisions for their bottom line and not for customers. A lot of people are in my position, they need a cushion every once in a while from a line of credit.\"\nTomassi said he is considering opening an account at Allyor Chime, banking players that don't chargeoverdraft fees.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":14,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":854449069,"gmtCreate":1635476531800,"gmtModify":1635476532095,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$THE HOUR GLASS LIMITED(AGS.SI)$Let’sgo to SGD2 and sky is the limit","listText":"$THE HOUR GLASS LIMITED(AGS.SI)$Let’sgo to SGD2 and sky is the limit","text":"$THE HOUR GLASS LIMITED(AGS.SI)$Let’sgo to SGD2 and sky is the limit","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/854449069","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":217,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":850478529,"gmtCreate":1634621895173,"gmtModify":1634621895416,"author":{"id":"3586421859868620","authorId":"3586421859868620","name":"PH2046","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d30bf493f03a880a39cd6f5a79bba29","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586421859868620","authorIdStr":"3586421859868620"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Top 4 and not top 3 right ? And while Tesla may still be a market-beating investment for years to come, many investors are looking to get in on the ground floor with other companies in the sector. Tesla put its second manufacturing facility in Shanghai for a reason, after all. Nio, along with its state-owned manufacturing partner JAC Motor, began expanding its manufacturing base in the city of Hefei, China in April 2021. That work will officially double the company's capacity to 240,000 vehicles per year, though the company has said with additional shifts and other arrangements, total capacity could reach 300,000 annually.
\n
Nio is planning on selling those vehicles beyond China as well. Though China may be the biggest auto market, Europe is currently the world's fastest-growing EV market. In 2020, Europe had the largest annual increase in battery electric vehicles, according to the International Energy Agency. Nio is trying to take advantage of that with a move into Norway this year, and plans to begin sales in Germany next year.
\n
Nio isn't just looking at a European business as a place to sell vehicles. In Norway, it has set up a division that includes its Nio House community, and plans to establish its Nio Power infrastructure there. Nio Power includes a battery swap subscription service where customers pay a recurring fee to be able to quickly pull into stations and have a fully charged battery installed in a matter of minutes.
\n
Nio hopes the additional volume of sales will bring it the scale it needs to reach profitability. It has said it is adding three new products next year as well, including the ET7 luxury electric sedan that will mark its first model beyond an SUV design.
