The so-called meme-stock duo, generally panned by Wall Street analysts but loved on forums like Reddit’s WallStreetBets and AMCStock, have advanced mostly in tandem in the past month. AMC stock (ticker: AMC) was up 19% to $19.56 Wednesday afternoon, while GameStop (GME) gained 16% to $242.32. Shares of fellow meme stocks Express (EXPR) and&nbsp;BlackBerry&nbsp;(BB) had surged 26% and 10%, respectively.</p>\n<p>For AMC, the latest jump came despite a change in view by the only analyst tracked by FactSet who had listed the stock at Buy. B. Riley analyst Eric Wold lowered his rating to Neutral, saying in a research note the stock’s recent surge left it well above&nbsp;his recently set $16 target for the price. He added that he didn’t think he could justify moving that target higher, given that the price now&nbsp;reflected AMC’s potential to benefit as vaccinations allow the public to go to the movies,the fact that theaters remain important in film distribution,and the company’s efforts to strengthen its balance sheet.</p>\n<p>Of course, given that the shares are moving in line with GameStop and other meme stocks, there are&nbsp;likely&nbsp;other factors at play. Both AMC and GameStop stock were&nbsp;highly shorted by Wall Street firms&nbsp;who saw a chance to benefit as pandemic-related shutdowns worsened problems the pair faced before Covid-19 emerged.</p>\n<p>That backfired tremendously early this year as retail investors bought the stocks, forcing the funds to buy as well to close out their negative bets. Prices skyrocketed.</p>\n<p>Ihor Dusaniwsky, managing director at short selling analytics firm S3 Partners, told<i>Barron’s</i>short sellers were collectively down $6.7 billion in year-to-date losses on GameStop, including $382.7 million on Wednesday, alone. AMC short sellers were down $1.37 billion year to date, including $290.7 million on Wednesday.</p>\n<p>S3 Partners estimates GameStop short interest sits at 11.55 million shares, or 20.3% of the shares available for trading. For AMC, S3 estimates a short interest of 92.29 million shares, or 20.6%. Dusaniwsky notes that both stocks still possess a high potential for a bigger squeeze, though it will depend on price moves.</p>\n<p>“We have started to see some short covering in GME as mark-to-market losses mount on the short side,” Dusaniwsky said. “AMC short sellers are still adding to their positions, albeit slightly, even though AMC’s stock price has been rallying.”</p>\n<p>The stocks’ passionate fans, meanwhile, have themselves become a shareholder constituency,as AMC CEO Adam Aron characterized them&nbsp;on the company’s earnings call earlier this month. The Reddit users see themselves as&nbsp;fighting a battle against Wall Street insiders&nbsp;that they believe rig markets against the average investor.</p>\n<p>Wold, the B. Riley analyst, told<i>Barron’s</i>that while the latest move for AMC has included nonfundamental factors, such as the potential for a short squeeze, he does believe investors are now more upbeat about its ability to avoid bankruptcy. Recent sales of stock have strengthened its balance sheet, he said.</p>\n<p>“It’s always difficult to comment repeatedly on any social media aspects that may or may not be influencing a stock price, but in this case, it was one that likely helped to take AMC to a place of surviving the pandemic vs. facing liquidation scenarios,” Wold said. “And with the number of retail investors likely now eclipsing the number of institutional investors through the various [at-the-market] equity programs in recent months, it makes sense that it’s becoming an increasing area of interest with the AMC story and to AMC management in general.”</p>\n<p>Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who has a Sell rating and $39 price target on GameStop, likened the situation for Wall Street to a radiologist diagnosing a cancer, but not its cause. He said he is paid to tell investors what a company will earn in the future, but it is their job to figure out entry and exit points.</p>\n<p>“Yes, there are a lot of analysts who play along and have crazy high targets for momentum darlings, but I use comps to value the companies I cover,” he said. “If the comp base isn’t going up, I don’t make an exception for the outlier. The so-called meme-stock duo, generally panned by Wall Street analysts but loved on forums like Reddit’s WallStreetBets and AMCStock, have advanced mostly in tandem in the past month. AMC stock (ticker: AMC) was up 19% to $19.56 Wednesday afternoon, while GameStop (GME) gained 16% to $242.32. Shares of fellow meme stocks Express (EXPR) and BlackBerry (BB) had surged 26% and 10%, respectively.\nFor AMC, the latest jump came despite a change in view by the only analyst tracked by FactSet who had listed the stock at Buy. B. Riley analyst Eric Wold lowered his rating to Neutral, saying in a research note the stock’s recent surge left it well above his recently set $16 target for the price. He added that he didn’t think he could justify moving that target higher, given that the price now reflected AMC’s potential to benefit as vaccinations allow the public to go to the movies,the fact that theaters remain important in film distribution,and the company’s efforts to strengthen its balance sheet.\nOf course, given that the shares are moving in line with GameStop and other meme stocks, there are likely other factors at play. Both AMC and GameStop stock were highly shorted by Wall Street firms who saw a chance to benefit as pandemic-related shutdowns worsened problems the pair faced before Covid-19 emerged.\nThat backfired tremendously early this year as retail investors bought the stocks, forcing the funds to buy as well to close out their negative bets. Prices skyrocketed.\nIhor Dusaniwsky, managing director at short selling analytics firm S3 Partners, toldBarron’sshort sellers were collectively down $6.7 billion in year-to-date losses on GameStop, including $382.7 million on Wednesday, alone. AMC short sellers were down $1.37 billion year to date, including $290.7 million on Wednesday.\nS3 Partners estimates GameStop short interest sits at 11.55 million shares, or 20.3% of the shares available for trading. For AMC, S3 estimates a short interest of 92.29 million shares, or 20.6%. Dusaniwsky notes that both stocks still possess a high potential for a bigger squeeze, though it will depend on price moves.\n“We have started to see some short covering in GME as mark-to-market losses mount on the short side,” Dusaniwsky said. “AMC short sellers are still adding to their positions, albeit slightly, even though AMC’s stock price has been rallying.”\nThe stocks’ passionate fans, meanwhile, have themselves become a shareholder constituency,as AMC CEO Adam Aron characterized them on the company’s earnings call earlier this month. In the following paragraphs, we share 5 reasons why:</p>\n<p><b>#1. COIN Is A Growing Business</b></p>\n<p>As a highly profitable business, COIN generates actual cash flow that causes its intrinsic value to grow over time. As a result, it is a true wealth compounder that, assuming the business remains profitable, will result in its owners becoming richer over the long term. Buying and holding shares of COIN is an investment that has the potential to increase the wealth of an individual based on growing cash flows and improving business fundamentals.</p>\n<p>In contrast, Bitcoins do not procreate nor generate cash flow. All it can do is increase or decrease in price relative to U.S. Dollars or other assets based on people's ever-changing desire to own it. As a result, holding it is not an investment, but rather a speculation on the future that Bitcoin will be in greater demand then than it is now.</p>\n<p>As Warren Buffett said in his&nbsp;2011 Letter to Shareholders:</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>If you own one ounce of gold for an eternity, you will still own one ounce at its end ... Owners are not inspired by what the asset itself can produce — it will remain lifeless forever — but rather by the belief that others will desire it even more avidly in the future.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Bitcoin - known as digital gold - could be described very similarly. While we do in fact own some gold (GLD), we also do not view it as an investment but rather as an asset that serves a purpose as an insurance mechanism as a time-tested and inflation-resistant medium of exchange. For exposure to gold in our investment portfolio, we&nbsp;buy gold miners&nbsp;instead. We view COIN as serving a similar purpose in our exposure to the crypto world.</p>\n<p><b>#2. COIN Is Diversified Across 100+ Cryptocurrencies</b></p>\n<p>Bitcoin is one of an ever-increasing number of cryptocurrencies that already number in the hundreds. As a result, it faces heavy competition and the constant threat of innovation and disruption displacing it as the leading cryptocurrency and eventually causing its value to fall. Furthermore, it faces regulatory and even ban risks, especially since the majority of its processing power is located in countries that are often considered strategic rivals or even adversaries of the West, including China, Russia, Iran, and Pakistan. Last, but not least, Bitcoin's price has proven to be extremely volatile, as the last two weeks have made clear:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0748a1a4f030bb30e23bc37a8352c208\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"403\"><span>Data byYCharts</span></p>\n<p>In contrast, COIN is diversified across over a hundred cryptocurrencies, thereby insulating it against any single cryptocurrency's collapse. If China were to ban Bitcoin and effectively seize control of most of its mining activity, for example, it would be devastating to the price - and processing power - of Bitcoin. While it would still likely hurt COIN's cash flows and share price meaningfully, the impact would be much less significant for COIN than what Bitcoin would face and it would be able to move forward with other cryptocurrencies in the place of Bitcoin.</p>\n<p><b>#3. COIN Profits Even When Cryptocurrencies Are Crashing</b></p>\n<p>While Bitcoin's profit-loss proposition rises and falls directly with the price of Bitcoin, COIN's profits are not tied directly to rising cryptocurrency prices. Instead, it earns the majority of its profits from transaction fees, meaning that as long as there is high volume in cryptocurrencies, they will be making high profits. Furthermore, since it deals in over a hundred cryptocurrencies, it is not reliant on high volume in any single cryptocurrency, but instead profits from the overall popularity of cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p>As a result, whether people are swarming the gate, trying to board the crypto bandwagon, or racing for the exits in a crypto sell-off, COIN is poised to reap massive profits, making it a more defensive and non-correlated asset than Bitcoin. This further boosts its risk-reward profile.</p>\n<p><b>#4. COIN Is Diversifying Into Ancillary Businesses</b></p>\n<p>While COIN operates from a similar competitive position as Bitcoin in that it enjoys a significant network advantage and early-mover status, it also faces significant competition from other similar platforms that are constantly innovating and trying to gain an advantage over it. However, COIN enjoys one key advantage over Bitcoin in this arena: it is a business with intelligent management executing a long-term strategy and a small army of highly talented software engineers and programmers, while Bitcoin is a lifeless and static asset.</p>\n<p>While this can be a blessing in that Bitcoin does not contain the risk of making any strategic blunders or misallocating shareholder capital, overall we view it as a major negative for Bitcoin because, in a space where innovation is the name of the game, it increases the chance that eventually Bitcoin will be displaced and bypassed by competing cryptocurrencies whereas COIN can continually evolve and pivot at or ahead of the pace of innovation to sustain and strengthen its competitive edge.</p>\n<p>In fact, COIN is already&nbsp;aggressively reinvesting&nbsp;its profits into doing just this. While its exchange business makes up the majority of its profits and management maintains that - despite growing competition - the accelerating demand for cryptocurrency means that margin compression on this business is unlikely anytime soon, they do expect margin compression to occur here over the long term as it would in any wildly profitable business without massive barriers to entry.</p>\n<p>As a result, management is making multiple investments today in order to grow diverse revenue streams that will lead to more stable and secure income over the long term. Within 5 years,management expects&nbsp;more than 50% of their revenue to come from sources other than transaction fees.</p>\n<p>Ultimately, COIN sees itself as a cryptocurrency infrastructure business that offers a wide array of services and tools that enable people to access, exchange, store, and optimize their use of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Businesses they are already growing and/or exploring include a cryptocurrency cash back credit card through a partnership with Visa (V), a custody/vault business for institutions that uses proprietary cybersecurity technology, cryptocurrency loans, deposit accounts, and new innovative forms of transactions that are not even on the public radar yet, making them a virtual infrastructure, cybersecurity, exchange, and fintech business all in one.</p>\n<p>They are also investing in cryptocurrency startup companies that many of their ex-employees have gone on to found. As a result, they are positioning themselves to benefit from further external innovation in the space while also insulating against being disrupted by new technologies and applications built by former company insiders.</p>\n<p>With just 50 million current members and ~1 billion estimated potential users, the growth runway for COIN remains massive and could easily lead to&nbsp;exponential growth in the years to come, especially if cryptos continue to grow rapidly in acceptance and popularity.</p>\n<p><b>#5. COIN Is Easier To Value Than Cryptocurrencies</b></p>\n<p>Last, but not least, COIN's ability to generate profits gives it an intrinsic value. While Bitcoin's true value is ultimately anyone's guess as it fully depends on speculation, the ever-changing whims of consumers, and the hope that nothing better comes along through the innovation pipeline, COIN brings actual profitability and new business innovation to the table. As a result, we can have a better idea of what an attractive price would be for COIN than for Bitcoin. Can she do it again?","content":"<p>ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood has been <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the best investors of the modern era.</p><p>Her flagship exchange-traded fund <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ARKK\">ARK Innovation ETF</a>&nbsp;</b>(NYSEMKT:ARKK), which focuses on disruptive tech stocks like <b>Tesla</b>, <b>Roku</b>, and <b>Square</b>, has returned more than 400% since its founding in 2014, outperforming the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> by nearly a factor of four, and Wood garnered much acclaim when five of her funds returned more than 100% last year.</p><p>Though ARK ETFs have mostly slipped this year with the broader sell-off in growth stocks, given her track record, it's worth paying attention to what Wood has to say.</p><p>The ARK chief has been a big backer of <b>Bitcoin </b>(CRYPTO:BTC) and said at a <i>Barron's </i>virtual conference last November that she saw the cryptocurrency hitting $500,000. Amid the recent crypto crash, Wood reaffirmed her price target on Bitcoin, though she acknowledged the environmental concerns that led Tesla CEO Elon Musk to say his company would no longer accept the digital currency as payment.</p><p>Let's take a look at Wood's argument before we examine whether it can hit $500,000.</p><h2>Wood's take</h2><p>Back in Nov. 2020, Wood argued that a number of catalysts were supporting Bitcoin's growth. She called it the reserve currency of the digital ecosystem and essentially said it was the crypto equivalent of the dollar.</p><p>Wood also noted that the central bank distributed currencies (CBDCs) that countries like China and the U.S. are beginning to create are bullish for Bitcoin and other crypto coins. They will help legitimize cryptocurrencies by giving the idea behind them a government stamp of approval and by highlighting the advantages of cryptocurrencies in general. Those include the fact digital coins like Bitcoin are pseudonymous and can't be tracked to the user, unlike the digital yuan that China is launching.</p><p>The ARK chief also pointed to the increasing institutional embrace for Bitcoin, and said that if institutions were to allocate around 5% of their funds to Bitcoin the way they have with asset classes like real estate or emerging markets, that would lift the price to $400,000 or $500,000.</p><p>At those levels, Bitcoin would be worth roughly the same as all of the gold in the world. That fits with another argument for Bitcoin's value, as many backers claim it's digital gold due to it being capped at 21 million coins, which creates artificial scarcity.</p><h2>Can Bitcoin really get to $500,000?</h2><p>Back in 2018, Wood slapped a split-adjusted $800 price target on Tesla, which seemed outlandish at the time as it called for the stock to increase by more than 1,000%. However, Tesla eclipsed that price last year, making Wood look prophetic.</p><p>The $500,000 price target for Bitcoin implies a similar gain as the currency would have to increase about 12 times to reach that mark.</p><p>The price target itself makes a good headline, but it's less relevant than Wood's overall bullishness.
