He said his greatest regret was not making bigger and bolder bets.

Listen to experts and have faith in the forces of change, despite severe swings in stock prices, James Anderson said in his report with the annual results of Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust .

Anderson will retire as a partner in asset manager Bailie Gifford and as joint manager of its Scottish Mortgage fund next April. The fund -- a FTSE 100 constituent with a market cap of more than GBP15 billion ($21 billion) -- has enjoyed remarkable gains over its history, marked by big, early bets on technology companies including online retailer Amazon $(AMZN)$, Chinese internet giant Tencent , and electric-car maker Tesla $(TSLA)$, which the fund bought into in 2014.

Shares in Scottish Mortgage have fallen 9% so far in 2021, but the fund remains up near 60% in the past year.

In a letter to shareholders, Anderson called the world of conventional asset management \"irretrievably broken,\" and took aim at \"value investing,\" the strategy famously espoused by investors like Ben Graham and Warren Buffett.

\"The only rhyme is that in the long run the value of stocks is the long-run free cash flows they generate but we have but the barest and most nebulous clues as to what these cash flows will turn out to be,\" Anderson said. \"But woe betide those who think that a near-term price to earnings ratio defines value in an era of deep change.\"

Since the emergence of digital technologies, \"sustained growth at extreme pace and with increasing returns to scale\" has become more evident, Anderson said. He pointed to tech giant Microsoft $(MSFT)$, which continues to grow after 35 years as a public company.

\"Distraction through seeking minor opportunities in banal companies over short periods is the perennial temptation. It must be resisted,\" Anderson said.

He described how the classic and careful investing approach of choosing a level of risk and return along a bell curve is flawed. It \"is neither accepting the deep uncertainty of the world nor acknowledging that the skew of returns is so extreme that it is the search for companies with the characteristics that might enable extreme and compounding success that is central to investing,\" he said.

But faith is required in investing in high-growth opportunities, Anderson stressed, because share-price crashes happen regularly and are severe. \"The stock charts that look like remorseless bottom left to top right graphs are never as smooth and easy as they subsequently appear,\" he said.

The fund manager also took a swipe at investors' obsession with short-term metrics -- what he called \"the near pornographic allure of news such as earnings announcements and macroeconomic headlines.\"

Instead of following \"brokers and the media,\" Anderson advised listening to experts and scientists. Here are a few reasons:

Its biggest booster set to guest host ‘SNL’

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, will host “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, which has already drawn cheers and jeers for the technologist. He has become one of the most prominent and vocal champions of dogecoin this year and some speculate that he could do something to promote doge.

Musk did refer to himself as the “dogefather” in one recent tweet ahead of his “Saturday Night Live” gig.

Brokerages trade dogecoin

A number of new venues have announced that they will trade dogecoin on their exchanges in recent days and weeks.

Crypto exchange Geminion Tuesdayannounced trading and custody support for the coin. Trading platform eToro also made dogecoin available for trading on its platform.Webullallowed its users to purchase dogecoin back on April 20.

FOMO

Fear of missing out also is said to be behind the surge. Some crypto participants speculate that the rise in dogecoin is being supported by retail traders who see the parody coin as more accessible investment (or trade) than, say, bitcoinBTCUSD,-0.16%,which was changing hands at $54,000, at last check on CoinDesk.

“Dogecoin is surging because many cryptocurrency traders do not want to miss out on any buzz that stems from Elon Musk’s hosting of ‘Saturday Night Live,’” wrote Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a daily note.

Gains in traditional assets also might seem more pedestrian. Here are a few reasons:Its biggest booster set to guest host ‘SNL’Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, will host “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, which has already drawn cheers and jeers for the technologist. He has become one of the most prominent and vocal champions of dogecoin this year and some speculate that he could do something to promote doge.Musk did refer to himself as the “dogefather” in one recent tweet ahead of his “Saturday Night Live” gig.Brokerages trade dogecoinA number of new venues have announced that they will trade dogecoin on their exchanges in recent days and weeks.Crypto exchange Geminion Tuesdayannounced trading and custody support for the coin. Trading platform eToro also made dogecoin available for trading on its platform.Webullallowed its users to purchase dogecoin back on April 20.FOMOFear of missing out also is said to be behind the surge. Some crypto participants speculate that the rise in dogecoin is being supported by retail traders who see the parody coin as more accessible investment (or trade) than, say, bitcoinBTCUSD,-0.16%,which was changing hands at $54,000, at last check on CoinDesk.“Dogecoin is surging because many cryptocurrency traders do not want to miss out on any buzz that stems from Elon Musk’s hosting of ‘Saturday Night Live,’” wrote Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a daily note.Gains in traditional assets also might seem more pedestrian. By comparison, gold futuresGC00,0.17%are down 6% so far this year, the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,+0.06%and the S&P 500 indexSPX,-0.67%are up by at least 10% in 2021, while the Nasdaq Composite IndexCOMP,-1.88%has gained over 5%.AccessibilityKonstantin Boyko-Romanovsky, CEO of Allnodes, via an emailed message, said he viewed support from Musk and fellow billionaire Mark Cuban as central to the bull thesis for dogecoin, but also said that some may perceive the crypto as more accessible compared against bitcoin, which hit a recent peak above $60,000 before cooling.“It appeals more to the general public because it costs so little. $60,000 for a single bitcoin may be intimidating to some. In a way, doge then is more like a USD but in a digital form,” he wrote.Bubbles & maniasMoya wrote that the dogecoin bubble should have “popped by now, but institutional interest is trying to take advantage of this momentum and that could support another push higher.”Many skeptics warn that dogecoin could leave a lot of newbie investors hemorrhaging losses if they wade into the asset imprudently.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":382,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106281886,"gmtCreate":1620123915045,"gmtModify":1631886407387,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GameStop(GME)$time to scoop at discount","listText":"$GameStop(GME)$time to scoop at discount","text":"$GameStop(GME)$time to scoop at discount","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/106281886","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":386,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106283467,"gmtCreate":1620123775659,"gmtModify":1631886407404,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"None to my interest though hmm","listText":"None to my interest though hmm","text":"None to my interest though hmm","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/106283467","repostId":"2132511028","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":326,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":103284758,"gmtCreate":1619787761074,"gmtModify":1631886407419,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"When I have money, I hope for a big dip to scoop yummy stocks at discounts. Still, it’s not clear that any new rally will have much lasting power. An even more serious U.S. market decline cannot be ruled out over the coming couple of months.
\n
For now, the recent decline appears to have been quite modest by historical standards, smaller even than what satisfies the semi-official definition of a correction as a 10% decline. Before Thursday’s big rally, the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,0.85%had fallen around 1,200 points from its previous all-time high, or 3.4%. The S&P 500SPX,0.98%was 4.0% below its high, and the Nasdaq CompositeCOMP,1.13%was down 7.8%.
\n
Consider how the Nasdaq-focused market timers reacted to these declines. As you can see from the chart below, their average recommended equity exposure (as represented by the Hulbert Nasdaq Newsletter Sentiment Index, or HNNSI) fell to minus 10.7%. That means that the Nasdaq-focused market timers are now recommending that their clients allocate an average of 10.7% of their equity trading portfolios to going short. As recently as April 29, this average exposure level stood at plus 83.6%.
\n

\n
That reflects a remarkably quick rush for the exits — 94.3 percentage points in just 10 trading sessions. In fact, out of the 5,000+ trading days since 2000, there have been only 18 — 0.3% — in which the HNNSI’s decline over the trailing 10 days was greater.
\n
To appreciate the contrarian significance of this, consider that, on average following those past few occasions when the HNNSI declined by this much and this fast, the Nasdaq Composite was 5.3% higher in one month’s time.
\n
Why, then, haven’t the contrarians become more bullish? The answer is also evident in the chart: The HNNSI’s plunge over the past 10 days stopped well short of the excessive bearish zone, defined as being in the bottom 10% of the historical distribution. That zone is represented by the beige-shaded box at the bottom of the chart.
\n
The last time the HNNSI fell into that zone was in March 2020. That was when the market’s “wall of worry” became incredibly strong and was able to support an impressive rally. That wall today is not as strong.
\n
The sentiment picture that the recent data are painting shows the market timers to be trigger-happy. They are quick to jump on the bullish bandwagon when the market rallies, and then jump on the bearish bandwagon when the market declines. As a result, both rallies and declines tend to be short-lived.
\n
A longer-lasting rally will require more extreme bearishness among the market timers, and for them to stubbornly hold onto their bearishness in the wake of the rally’s initial liftoff. Except for that to happen, the market to itself most likely would have to suffer a worse decline than we’ve experienced in recent days. It must be resisted,\" Anderson said.He described how the classic and careful investing approach of choosing a level of risk and return along a bell curve is flawed. The fund manager also took a swipe at investors' obsession with short-term metrics -- what he called \"the near pornographic allure of news such as earnings announcements and macroeconomic headlines.\"Instead of following \"brokers and the media,\" Anderson advised listening to experts and scientists. Following expert advice on the advances in battery technology was behind Baillie Gifford's decision to invest in Tesla early, he said. At the time, Tesla was the only substantial Western player in electric vehicles, which the fund saw as an inevitable successor to conventional cars powered by internal combustion engines.Anderson also acknowledged the difficulties of measuring the value and profitability of future-focused endeavors. He cited Tesla's ambitions in autonomous vehicles, which the fund views as possibly transformative for the economics of the company -- despite not having any idea how successful it will be.\"To us it is bizarre that brokers, hedge fund mavens and commentators can claim to be able to decipher the future and assign a precise numerical target to the value of Tesla,\" he said.In his final annual results at Scottish Mortgage, Anderson pointed to renewable energy, synthetic biology, and the changing landscape in healthcare innovation as among the revolutionary forces ahead in the market.Describing what makes for a great investment, he cited Amazon and its founder Jeff Bezos as a model. \"The company should have open-ended growth opportunities that they should work hard never to define or time,\" he said, alongside \"initial leadership that thinks like a founder (and almost always is one)\" as well as a distinctive philosophy of business.Today, Scottish Mortgage's top 10 holdings, in order of portfolio weight, are Tencent, biotechnology-equipment group Illumina (ILMN), Dutch semiconductor industry supplier ASML (ASML.AE), Amazon, Tesla, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba $(09988)$, Chinese local services platform Meituan Dianping , U.S. biotech group Moderna $(MRNA)$, Chinese EV player NIO $(NIO)$, and European food-delivery group Delivery Hero.\"There's much that I have misunderstood and misjudged over the two decades,\" Anderson said, urging those that follow him to be eccentric, and to place trust in unreasonable people and propositions. \"My ever-growing conviction is that my greatest failing has been to be insufficiently radical.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":328,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":105693166,"gmtCreate":1620295153855,"gmtModify":1631884327990,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hope it goes well and Ant gets listed.....","listText":"Hope it goes well and Ant gets listed.....","text":"Hope it goes well and Ant gets listed.....","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/105693166","repostId":"2133602520","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":655,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106281886,"gmtCreate":1620123915045,"gmtModify":1631886407387,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GameStop(GME)$time to scoop at discount","listText":"$GameStop(GME)$time to scoop at discount","text":"$GameStop(GME)$time to scoop at discount","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/106281886","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":386,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":166360144,"gmtCreate":1623992071288,"gmtModify":1631886407338,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$sold too early...","listText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$sold too early...","text":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$sold too early...","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/166360144","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":337,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":103284758,"gmtCreate":1619787761074,"gmtModify":1631886407419,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"When I have money, I hope for a big dip to scoop yummy stocks at discounts. He added that 60% of Delta’s workforce has at least one vaccine shot.\nRelated Link:CDC Says Fully Vaccinated People Can Mostly Stop Wearing Masks\nWhy It Matters: Delta is the first U.S. carrier to announce it will only hire vaccinated individuals. The New York Timesreported United Airlines Holdings Inc.UAL 4.73%CEO Scott Kirby voiced his support for the idea in a video forum in January, but decided not to go forward because the carrier could not “realistically be the only company” to take this action.\nAlthough most schools in the U.S. require children to have certain vaccinations, there is no precedent for companies refusing to hire people based on their vaccination status.\nCurrent federal policy on employer-mandated vaccinations is focused on the rights of current employees, not potential hires.\nThe Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued guidancelast December stating companies “may encourage or possibly require COVID-19 vaccinations” of its workforce, provided their policies are in compliance with workplace laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII).","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":296,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106283467,"gmtCreate":1620123775659,"gmtModify":1631886407404,"author":{"id":"3581985408120232","authorId":"3581985408120232","name":"summer_1_3","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581985408120232","authorIdStr":"3581985408120232"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"None to my interest though hmm","listText":"None to my interest though hmm","text":"None to my interest though hmm","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/106283467","repostId":"2132511028","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2132511028","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1620117368,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2132511028?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-04 16:36","market":"hk","language":"en","title":"5 Stocks To Watch For May 4, 2021","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2132511028","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are:","content":"
Some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are:

Wall Street expects CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) to report quarterly earnings at $1.71 per share on revenue of $68.39 billion before the opening bell.
