Tesla put its second manufacturing facility in Shanghai for a reason, after all. Nio, along with its state-owned manufacturing partner JAC Motor, began expanding its manufacturing base in the city of Hefei, China in April 2021. That work will officially double the company's capacity to 240,000 vehicles per year, though the company has said with additional shifts and other arrangements, total capacity could reach 300,000 annually.</p>\n<p>Nio is planning on selling those vehicles beyond China as well. Though China may be the biggest auto market, Europe is currently the world's fastest-growing EV market. In 2020, Europe had the largest annual increase in battery electric vehicles, according to the International Energy Agency. Nio is trying to take advantage of that with a move into Norway this year, and plans to begin sales in Germany next year.</p>\n<p>Nio isn't just looking at a European business as a place to sell vehicles. Its first two plants in the U.S. are in South Carolina and North Carolina, the latter of which is to supply early investor and future customer <b>United Parcel Service</b>. Arrival has said UPS has plans to order at least 10,000 of its electric delivery vehicles. All told, the company said in its second-quarter financial update that as of August 2021, Arrival has order interest or letters of intent for almost 60,000 vehicles.</p>\n<p>Arrival is building the microfactories to supply this potential demand. At the end of its fiscal 2022 second-quarter period (ended July 31, 2021), ChargePoint had almost 120,000 active charging ports in the U.S., Europe, and India. It reported year-over-year revenue growth of 61% in that period, and raised its full-year revenue guidance by 15% to a range of $225 million to $230 million.</p>\n<p>The majority of that revenue currently comes from building out the network hardware. Longer term, however, investors are looking for subscription revenue that comes from software services for its commercial, fleet, and residential customers. That will be used for scheduling and fueling optimization in addition to maintenance service subscriptions.</p>\n<p>ChargePoint is the leading charging hardware provider in North America, and is expanding in Europe. There's no question that if EVs become as ubiquitous as many predict, there will be much more expansion to come. The investment thesis, however, needs to also rely on the recurring revenue that ChargePoint management predicts is coming. That's where much of the risk lies with ChargePoint. Below we summarize the highlights of their surprisingly downbeat views.</p>\n<p><u><b>Morgan Stanley</b></u></p>\n<p>We start with Morgan Stanley, which yesterday published its latest Global Macro Forum slide deck (available forprofessional subscribers), and where the bank's chief cross-asset strategist Andrew Sheets warns that equity market internals have continued to follow a \"mid cycle transition\", a process which usually ends with quality stocks - like the FAAMGs market \"generals\" - getting hit, \"<b>which poses outsized risk to the high-quality S&amp;P 500</b>\" through October.</p>\n<p>Sheets frames his pessimistic view by disclosing the five themes which he believes will define markets though year-end. These are:</p>\n<ol>\n <li><p><b>Policy divergence and the start of tapering:</b>MS expects the Fed to signal its intent to taper at the September meeting. As central bank policy becomes less easy, it also becomes more divergent. This will provide support for long DXY, short PLN/HUF, short US duration and gold, caution on US and Taiwan equities.</p></li>\n <li><p><b>Vaccination divergence:</b>The world has two strategies to combat COVID-19 – vaccination and suppression. The Delta variant has made the latter difficult, increasing risks to growth in regions with low vaccination rates. The bank sees this as bullish for EU equities.</p></li>\n <li><p><b>Valuation divergence:</b>2021 to date has seen a wide adjustment in valuations. Sheets' advice: \"<i>Focus on areas with greater levels of valuation adjustment. We add Brazil versus EM equities to our top trades.\"</i></p></li>\n <li><p><b>Echoes of 2004:</b>Sheets thinks that 2004 offers a useful guide for a 'mid-cycle transition’. He suggests taking default risk over spread risk and like loans over bonds in credit.</p></li>\n <li><p><b>Doing things &gt; buying things:</b>The pandemic saw demand for goods jump and demand for services collapse. As the recovery continues, expect a reversal. We think this supports energy &gt; metals, and are cautious on US consumer discretionary.</p></li>\n</ol>\n<p>While regular readers are aware of Morgan Stanley's long-running theme that the US economy is undergoing a mid-cycle transition, for those unfamiliar, here is one way that the bank's chief equity strategist Michael Wilson has framed it previously, showing that the ISM Manufacturing Index always lags the Prices Paid, which has recently reversed (shown inverted on the chart below) and suggests of significant downside tot he closely watched indicator.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/89346c02440d5fab4a98e72d7d27ba1f\" tg-width=\"1050\" tg-height=\"657\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>As part of this \"mid-cycle transition\", several months ago the bank urged clients to transition out of small caps and into quality stocks...</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5e2afd584db11f19b6b05031483d6f6c\" tg-width=\"1097\" tg-height=\"656\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>... we are now on the verge of ending the mid-cycle transition, which according to Michael Wilson ends either in \"fire,\" with a<b>market correction of 10-20% as a result of higher rates...</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e7ed4becb4b4add1c291379068668ca7\" tg-width=\"1123\" tg-height=\"660\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>... or<b>\"ice\"</b>as consumer spending grinds to a halt.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/83d20b93fac562ec12c5371ce0cec674\" tg-width=\"1130\" tg-height=\"661\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Putting it together, Andrew Sheets lists the following 5 key market takeaways:</p>\n<ol>\n <li><p><b>September and October represents a tricky period for central bank communication, economic data and market technicals:</b>The bank sees risks to both US equities and US bonds given current valuations, and as a result<b>Morgan Stanley is downgrading US stocks to Underweight and global equities to Equal Weight</b>.</p></li>\n <li><p><b>For the global economy, Morgan Stanley thinks that many current inflationary pressures are temporary, but the timing of peak inflation varies by region and country.</b>On growth, the bank believes that \"<i>we’ve passed the peak in activity, with August particularly weak in the US,</i><i><b>but the end of the cycle is not nigh.\"</b></i></p></li>\n <li><p><b>In rates, it will come as no surprise that MS thinks that core rates have bottomed and will move higher into 4Q21 and into 2H22,</b>after all this is the biggest consensus trade across Wall Street (and is thus likely wrong): Central bank withdrawal of policy accommodation and a near-term trough in economic data should both help to push yields higher. Sheets also thinks USD also grinds higher into year-end.</p></li>\n <li><p><b>For equities, Sheets warns that market internals have continued to follow a ‘mid-cycle transition’:</b>That process, as noted above, usually ends with quality stocks getting hit, which poses outsized risk to the high-quality S&amp;P 500.<b>Both ‘fire’ (rates higher) and ‘ice’ (the growth slowdown is worse than expected) pose risk to a market that has barely de-rated year-to-date.</b></p></li>\n</ol>\n<p>Putting it all together, on Wednesday morning Sheets spoke to Bloomberg TV, saying that “<b>we are going to have a period where data is going to be weak in September at the time when you have a heightened risk of delta variant and school reopening\"</b>adding that “If the data does stay soft, the market valuations just haven’t adjusted like other parts of the market have.”</p>\n<p><u><b>Bank of America</b></u></p>\n<p>Regular readers will know that Bank of America has been one of the most bearish big banks in 2021, with its Chief Investment Officer spouting a weekly dose of fire and brimstone (as an example see his \"Bear Case In 12 \"Charts Of Darkness\"), while the bank's chief equity strategist Savita Subramanian having held to the lowest 2021 year-end S&amp;P price target at just 3,800, tied with Stifel's Barry Bannister for most bearish strategist.</p>\n<p>Well that changed today, when just like Michael Wilson a few weeks ago, she finally hiked her year-end S&amp;P price target to 4,250 from 3,800, admitting that she is \"marking our models to market\", i.e., merely catching up with stocks, i.e., the Fed's balance sheet, but not before warning that \"<i><b>downside risks remain\"</b></i>and asking \"<i><b>what good news is left</b></i>?\" Indeed, while higher, her new price target still implies 6% downside from current prices. The table below reveals how she got to that particular price, and also how Subramanian got her 2022 year-end S&amp;P price target of 4,600... which is just 2% higher from spot.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/90219af90e39133a9a8eb66d0c0b8b5e\" tg-width=\"1208\" tg-height=\"594\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>But far from turning bullish, her note published this morning titled \"<i>Should you keep dancing if the music slows down</i>?\" (available forprofessional subscribers) is a scathing critique of everything that is broken with the market, and a cautionary tale to anyone who believes that buying the S&amp;P at its all time high of 4,500 is a good idea.</p>\n<p>Next, Subramanian warns that \"<i>sentiment is all but euphoric with our Sell Side Indicator (see SSI) closer to a sell signal than at any point since 2007\"...</i></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cceedf36db75a0f6e084d6dcd15450b5\" tg-width=\"1177\" tg-height=\"818\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>... an indicator which explains 25% of subsequent S&amp;P500 returns...</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3bba5b54c4c953c1b807b2ade30989a8\" tg-width=\"1196\" tg-height=\"479\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>... while wage/input cost inflation and supply chain shifts are starting to weigh on margins.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7359b080cc5e60ad6723c32b74c68b70\" tg-width=\"1157\" tg-height=\"976\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The BofA strategist also calculates that interest rate risk is at a record high,<b>with S&amp;P 500 equity duration equivalent to a 36-year zero-coupon bond, where every 10bp increase in the discount rate equates to a 4% decline</b>. Finally, \"valuations leave no margin for error.\"</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9aef25e2e8272798285ebdeeeb692671\" tg-width=\"590\" tg-height=\"463\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Having reluctantly hiked the price target, Subramanian - like Wilson - is quick to caution that \"<b>this may not end now. But when it ends, it could end badly.\"</b></p>\n<blockquote>\n If taper means no upside to the S&amp;P 500, tightening would be worse. Canaries are chirping – \n <b>PPG, a barometer of industrial activity, aborted guidance on supply chain woes; credit spreads have stealthily widened, and our valuation model (~80% explanatory power for S&amp;P 10yr returns) now indicates negative returns (-0.8% p.a.) for the first time since ‘99.</b>\n</blockquote>\n<p>As noted above, Subramanian also looked at one of her favorite indicators - price to normalized earnings - which has a very strong relationship to subsequent S&amp;P 500 returns over the long haul. With the S&amp;P 500 current sporting a trailing normalized PE ratio of 29x, the BofA strategist calculates that<b>the 10-year annual 12-month price return of -0.8%, \"represents the first negative returns since the Tech Bubble.\" In other words, ten years from now stocks will be... lower than where they are now.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4da5e585ef1b82a957e348d35e1e959b\" tg-width=\"655\" tg-height=\"507\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><u><b>Deutsche Bank</b></u></p>\n<p>While not nearly as bearish as Morgan Stanley (and its equity Underweight rating) or Bank of America (with its gloomy near-term and 10 year forecasts), Deutsche Bank has also joined the bandwagon of bears, and in the bank's latest House View (available forprofessional subscribers), titled \"The New World: Moving Beyond Covid\", the bank writes that \"the global economy performed strongly over the summer, but the delta variant has led to increasingly frequent data misses versus expectations.<b>This has seen us downgrade our near-term US growth outlook just as high inflation readings have shifted attention to when central banks will taper asset purchases.\"</b></p>\n<p>Looking ahead, DB notes that while tapering discussions will raise the stakes for this month’s Fed and ECB decisions but<i>\"September will see other pivotal events for the outlook too. The German election has tightened up significantly, and polls suggest that only three-party coalitions can form a majority, meaning negotiations could take some months. US government funding runs out on September 30, and a potential fight over the debt ceiling is approaching. Furthermore, the House will vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill by September 27, and we should soon find out the next Fed Chair.\"</i></p>\n<p>ANd while financial markets have remained buoyant, and equity indices have repeatedly hit fresh highs, Deutsche Bank's strategists \"<i><b>expect an imminent correction</b></i>\" even though they see the S&amp;P 500 rising back around current levels by year end.</p>\n<p>Some more details on the coming pullback in markets which DB believes will see the S&amp;P drop 6%-10%:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><p>Indicators of macro cyclical growth are peaking and data surprises are now negative</p></li>\n <li><p>Earnings upgrades are likely done as the bottom up consensus has upgraded forward estimates significantly.</p></li>\n <li><p>Inflation risks are rising.</p></li>\n <li><p>And overall positioning is high while the retail investor is in retreat, though buybacks and inflows are still strong.</p></li>\n</ul>\n<p>But, as noted above, and in seeking to break from the uber-bears, DB notes that it then sees equities rallying back as its baseline remains for strong growth but only a gradual and modest rise in inflation.</p>\n<p>The summary of the bank's market views is below:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/393a1c149faa0a0ba4b5a163c46f0615\" tg-width=\"983\" tg-height=\"626\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><u><b>Goldman Sachs</b></u></p>\n<p>Perhaps the most cheerful take of all, came from Goldman's Christian Mueller-Glissmann, who in a Bloomberg interview echoed what wefirst observed a few weeks ago,namely that “High valuations have increased market fragility,” adding that \"if there is a new negative development, it could generate growth shocks that lead to rapid de-risking.”</p>\n<p>“The key point here is there is very little buffer left if you get large negative surprises,” said Mueller-Glissmann.</p>\n<p>Writing in a GOAL Kickstart note on Tuesday (available forprofessional subscribers)Mueller-Glissman said that \"the S&amp;P 500 has continued to make all-time highs despite the weaker macro. In fact, realized vol dipped to 8% during the summer pointing towards a new low vol regime, resulting in particularly strong risk-adjusted returns.<b>After the clear 'good news is good news' regime in Q1, for the S&amp;P 500 'bad news' has become 'good news' again last quarter.\"</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/938dbf6f7ed7bb36b78a422b7829b9b7\" tg-width=\"896\" tg-height=\"356\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">This, the Goldman strategist notes, \"is consistent with more support from dovish 'monetary policy' or search for yield: long-duration secular growth stocks have been boosted by the decline in real yields, helping broad indices which now have a larger weight in these stocks.\"</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, dissecting macro surprises shows that while global MAP scores were still positive until recently, the US MAP turned negative, led by labor data while consumer and manufacturing held up better. All in all this has supported dovish Fed policy expectations creating a 'Goldilocks' backdrop.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1cefc2563977601840609b214886ffe6\" tg-width=\"892\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">However, as Goldman warns,<b>\"more recently macro surprises have also turned more negative across the board.\"</b>During periods of negative macro surprises the right tail risk for equities has historically been more limited - average returns and hit ratios for the S&amp;P 500 tend to be lower. Option markets have reflected this - for the next 3m the likelihood of very positive S&amp;P 500 returns (above 8%) is priced lower than normal, even lower than during slowdown phases. On the other hand, Mueller-Glissman notes that the likelihood of a 5% S&amp;P 500 rally is still elevated compared to the average during low vol regimes.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6f5b78b4707ec4beeb36ba3bde0c12e4\" tg-width=\"895\" tg-height=\"389\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Meanwhile, the recent low realized volatility has pushed the volatility risk premium close to the post-2000s highs and Goldman's options research team expects realized volatility until the end of the year to be lower than what is implied.</p>\n<p>The conclusion: \"With equities close to all-time highs, elevated equity valuations and a less favorable growth/inflation mix near term, call overwriting can still be attractive as a carry overlay.\"</p>\n<p><u><b>Citigroup</b></u></p>\n<p>The threat of growing market fragility was also touched upon by Citi's Chris Montagu who in his latest Viewpoint note, wrote that investor positioning has become ultra-bullish, with longs on the S&amp;P 500 outnumbering shorts by nearly 10 to 1. In his view,<b>half of those bets are likely to face losses on a drop in the index of as little as 2.2%.</b>And even a small correction could be amplified by forced long liquidation.</p>\n<p>As Montagu observes, the main equity indexes continue to set new highs, but the underlying positioning differs greatly by region. US equity positioning is extended and very one-sided net long, which leads to asymmetric risk of positioning amplifying any small market correction. Investors continue to add to this long bias. Meanwhile, positioning is much lighter in Europe and less likely to significantly drive price action near term. In Japan the recent rally in Nikkei 225 initially only saw limited investor participation, but there are signs that futures investor flows are accelerating even as ETFs continue to see modest outflows.</p>\n<p>Focusing just on the US, Montagu writes that \"investors have steadily been adding to net long exposure throughout the summer\" and remain very long. Meanwhile, if one includes “legacy” positions and in particular the large swing towards net longer around the June FOMC meeting, then positioning looks even more extended as \"investors continued to add to the long bias last week, but only at the moderate steady rate seen throughout the rest of the summer.\"</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3880354e695a0e0b3140c297256f35a1\" tg-width=\"947\" tg-height=\"426\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">WIth that in mind, Montagu warns that \"<b>risk is asymmetric to the downside with crowded positioning in the form of longs outnumbering shorts nearly 10 to 1.\"</b>According to his calculations \"these longs sit on an average 2.4% profit and half of positions in loss on a move below 4,435 (~2.2% correction).<b>That means a small correction could be amplified by forced long liquidation pushing the market further down.</b>\"</p>\n<p>Finally, the Nasdaq is similarly stretched with the concentration of long positions leaving the market more vulnerable on a sell-off, and while older positions sit on large profits which act as a buffer on minor volatility, \"<b>nearly a quarter of positions are more recent and with no profit buffer.\"</b></p>\n<p>In short, one serious swoon lower could quickly transform into a rout.</p>\n<p><u><b>Credit Suisse</b></u></p>\n<p>We round out the gloomish bank compendium by skimming the latest note from Credit Suisse equity strategist&nbsp;Andrew Garthwaite who while turned<b>bearish on U.S. equities while predicting that rising bond yields and inflation expectations are likely to help European equities outperform their regional peers.</b></p>\n<p>Europe’s PMI momentum is “much better than in the U.S., and markets have unusually decoupled from this,” Garthwaite said, while noting that he is \"small underweight\" on U.S. equities as tax and regulations pose a higher risk than other regions, and points to “extreme” valuations.</p>\n<p>* * *</p>\n<p>So is a correction, or perhaps even bear market, assured? Of course not, and there are two key catalysts that could prevent such an outcome, besides the Fed of course. On one hand, banks can unleash another record burst of stock buybacks as they did three weeks ago just as stocks were about to breach the key 4,350 support level. And then, there is the continued risk appetite among retail investors.</p>\n<p>In his latest Flows and Liquidity notes, JPM quant Nick Panigirtzoglou saw retail investors as the key force behind recent gains, noting that they plowed almost $30 billion of cash into US stocks and ETFs in July and August, the most in a two-month period. Below we summarize the highlights of their surprisingly downbeat views.\nMorgan Stanley\nWe start with Morgan Stanley, which yesterday published its latest Global Macro Forum slide deck (available forprofessional subscribers), and where the bank's chief cross-asset strategist Andrew Sheets warns that equity market internals have continued to follow a \"mid cycle transition\", a process which usually ends with quality stocks - like the FAAMGs market \"generals\" - getting hit, \"which poses outsized risk to the high-quality S&P 500\" through October.\nSheets frames his pessimistic view by disclosing the five themes which he believes will define markets though year-end. These are:\n\nPolicy divergence and the start of tapering:MS expects the Fed to signal its intent to taper at the September meeting. As central bank policy becomes less easy, it also becomes more divergent. This will provide support for long DXY, short PLN/HUF, short US duration and gold, caution on US and Taiwan equities.\nVaccination divergence:The world has two strategies to combat COVID-19 – vaccination and suppression. The Delta variant has made the latter difficult, increasing risks to growth in regions with low vaccination rates. Sheets also thinks USD also grinds higher into year-end.\nFor equities, Sheets warns that market internals have continued to follow a ‘mid-cycle transition’:That process, as noted above, usually ends with quality stocks getting hit, which poses outsized risk to the high-quality S&P 500.Both ‘fire’ (rates higher) and ‘ice’ (the growth slowdown is worse than expected) pose risk to a market that has barely de-rated year-to-date.\n\nPutting it all together, on Wednesday morning Sheets spoke to Bloomberg TV, saying that “we are going to have a period where data is going to be weak in September at the time when you have a heightened risk of delta variant and school reopening\"adding that “If the data does stay soft, the market valuations just haven’t adjusted like other parts of the market have.”\nBank of America\nRegular readers will know that Bank of America has been one of the most bearish big banks in 2021, with its Chief Investment Officer spouting a weekly dose of fire and brimstone (as an example see his \"Bear Case In 12 \"Charts Of Darkness\"), while the bank's chief equity strategist Savita Subramanian having held to the lowest 2021 year-end S&P price target at just 3,800, tied with Stifel's Barry Bannister for most bearish strategist.\nWell that changed today, when just like Michael Wilson a few weeks ago, she finally hiked her year-end S&P price target to 4,250 from 3,800, admitting that she is \"marking our models to market\", i.e., merely catching up with stocks, i.e., the Fed's balance sheet, but not before warning that \"downside risks remain\"and asking \"what good news is left?\" Indeed, while higher, her new price target still implies 6% downside from current prices. The table below reveals how she got to that particular price, and also how Subramanian got her 2022 year-end S&P price target of 4,600... which is just 2% higher from spot.\n\nBut far from turning bullish, her note published this morning titled \"Should you keep dancing if the music slows down?\" (available forprofessional subscribers) is a scathing critique of everything that is broken with the market, and a cautionary tale to anyone who believes that buying the S&P at its all time high of 4,500 is a good idea.\nNext, Subramanian warns that \"sentiment is all but euphoric with our Sell Side Indicator (see SSI) closer to a sell signal than at any point since 2007\"...\n\n... an indicator which explains 25% of subsequent S&P500 returns...\n\n... while wage/input cost inflation and supply chain shifts are starting to weigh on margins.\n\nThe BofA strategist also calculates that interest rate risk is at a record high,with S&P 500 equity duration equivalent to a 36-year zero-coupon bond, where every 10bp increase in the discount rate equates to a 4% decline. Finally, \"valuations leave no margin for error.\"\n\nHaving reluctantly hiked the price target, Subramanian - like Wilson - is quick to caution that \"this may not end now. But when it ends, it could end badly.\"\n\n If taper means no upside to the S&P 500, tightening would be worse. Canaries are chirping – \n PPG, a barometer of industrial activity, aborted guidance on supply chain woes; credit spreads have stealthily widened, and our valuation model (~80% explanatory power for S&P 10yr returns) now indicates negative returns (-0.8% p.a.) for the first time since ‘99.\n\nAs noted above, Subramanian also looked at one of her favorite indicators - price to normalized earnings - which has a very strong relationship to subsequent S&P 500 returns over the long haul. With the S&P 500 current sporting a trailing normalized PE ratio of 29x, the BofA strategist calculates thatthe 10-year annual 12-month price return of -0.8%, \"represents the first negative returns since the Tech Bubble.\" In other words, ten years from now stocks will be... lower than where they are now.\nDeutsche Bank\nWhile not nearly as bearish as Morgan Stanley (and its equity Underweight rating) or Bank of America (with its gloomy near-term and 10 year forecasts), Deutsche Bank has also joined the bandwagon of bears, and in the bank's latest House View (available forprofessional subscribers), titled \"The New World: Moving Beyond Covid\", the bank writes that \"the global economy performed strongly over the summer, but the delta variant has led to increasingly frequent data misses versus expectations.This has seen us downgrade our near-term US growth outlook just as high inflation readings have shifted attention to when central banks will taper asset purchases.\"\nLooking ahead, DB notes that while tapering discussions will raise the stakes for this month’s Fed and ECB decisions but\"September will see other pivotal events for the outlook too. The German election has tightened up significantly, and polls suggest that only three-party coalitions can form a majority, meaning negotiations could take some months. US government funding runs out on September 30, and a potential fight over the debt ceiling is approaching. Furthermore, the House will vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill by September 27, and we should soon find out the next Fed Chair.\"\nANd while financial markets have remained buoyant, and equity indices have repeatedly hit fresh highs, Deutsche Bank's strategists \"expect an imminent correction\" even though they see the S&P 500 rising back around current levels by year end.\nSome more details on the coming pullback in markets which DB believes will see the S&P drop 6%-10%:\n\nIndicators of macro cyclical growth are peaking and data surprises are now negative\nEarnings upgrades are likely done as the bottom up consensus has upgraded forward estimates significantly.\nInflation risks are rising.\nAnd overall positioning is high while the retail investor is in retreat, though buybacks and inflows are still strong.\n\nBut, as noted above, and in seeking to break from the uber-bears, DB notes that it then sees equities rallying back as its baseline remains for strong growth but only a gradual and modest rise in inflation.\nThe summary of the bank's market views is below:\n\nGoldman Sachs\nPerhaps the most cheerful take of all, came from Goldman's Christian Mueller-Glissmann, who in a Bloomberg interview echoed what wefirst observed a few weeks ago,namely that “High valuations have increased market fragility,” adding that \"if there is a new negative development, it could generate growth shocks that lead to rapid de-risking.”\n“The key point here is there is very little buffer left if you get large negative surprises,” said Mueller-Glissmann.\nWriting in a GOAL Kickstart note on Tuesday (available forprofessional subscribers)Mueller-Glissman said that \"the S&P 500 has continued to make all-time highs despite the weaker macro. In fact, realized vol dipped to 8% during the summer pointing towards a new low vol regime, resulting in particularly strong risk-adjusted returns.After the clear 'good news is good news' regime in Q1, for the S&P 500 'bad news' has become 'good news' again last quarter.\"\nThis, the Goldman strategist notes, \"is consistent with more support from dovish 'monetary policy' or search for yield: long-duration secular growth stocks have been boosted by the decline in real yields, helping broad indices which now have a larger weight in these stocks.\"\nMeanwhile, dissecting macro surprises shows that while global MAP scores were still positive until recently, the US MAP turned negative, led by labor data while consumer and manufacturing held up better. All in all this has supported dovish Fed policy expectations creating a 'Goldilocks' backdrop.\nHowever, as Goldman warns,\"more recently macro surprises have also turned more negative across the board.\"During periods of negative macro surprises the right tail risk for equities has historically been more limited - average returns and hit ratios for the S&P 500 tend to be lower. Option markets have reflected this - for the next 3m the likelihood of very positive S&P 500 returns (above 8%) is priced lower than normal, even lower than during slowdown phases. On the other hand, Mueller-Glissman notes that the likelihood of a 5% S&P 500 rally is still elevated compared to the average during low vol regimes.\nMeanwhile, the recent low realized volatility has pushed the volatility risk premium close to the post-2000s highs and Goldman's options research team expects realized volatility until the end of the year to be lower than what is implied.\nThe conclusion: \"With equities close to all-time highs, elevated equity valuations and a less favorable growth/inflation mix near term, call overwriting can still be attractive as a carry overlay.\"\nCitigroup\nThe threat of growing market fragility was also touched upon by Citi's Chris Montagu who in his latest Viewpoint note, wrote that investor positioning has become ultra-bullish, with longs on the S&P 500 outnumbering shorts by nearly 10 to 1. In his view,half of those bets are likely to face losses on a drop in the index of as little as 2.2%.And even a small correction could be amplified by forced long liquidation.\nAs Montagu observes, the main equity indexes continue to set new highs, but the underlying positioning differs greatly by region. US equity positioning is extended and very one-sided net long, which leads to asymmetric risk of positioning amplifying any small market correction. Investors continue to add to this long bias. Meanwhile, positioning is much lighter in Europe and less likely to significantly drive price action near term. In Japan the recent rally in Nikkei 225 initially only saw limited investor participation, but there are signs that futures investor flows are accelerating even as ETFs continue to see modest outflows.\nFocusing just on the US, Montagu writes that \"investors have steadily been adding to net long exposure throughout the summer\" and remain very long. Meanwhile, if one includes “legacy” positions and in particular the large swing towards net longer around the June FOMC meeting, then positioning looks even more extended as \"investors continued to add to the long bias last week, but only at the moderate steady rate seen throughout the rest of the summer.\"\nWIth that in mind, Montagu warns that \"risk is asymmetric to the downside with crowded positioning in the form of longs outnumbering shorts nearly 10 to 1.\"According to his calculations \"these longs sit on an average 2.4% profit and half of positions in loss on a move below 4,435 (~2.2% correction).That means a small correction could be amplified by forced long liquidation pushing the market further down.\"\nFinally, the Nasdaq is similarly stretched with the concentration of long positions leaving the market more vulnerable on a sell-off, and while older positions sit on large profits which act as a buffer on minor volatility, \"nearly a quarter of positions are more recent and with no profit buffer.\"\nIn short, one serious swoon lower could quickly transform into a rout.\nCredit Suisse\nWe round out the gloomish bank compendium by skimming the latest note from Credit Suisse equity strategist Andrew Garthwaite who while turnedbearish on U.S. equities while predicting that rising bond yields and inflation expectations are likely to help European equities outperform their regional peers.\nEurope’s PMI momentum is “much better than in the U.S., and markets have unusually decoupled from this,” Garthwaite said, while noting that he is \"small underweight\" on U.S. equities as tax and regulations pose a higher risk than other regions, and points to “extreme” valuations.\n* * *\nSo is a correction, or perhaps even bear market, assured? Of course not, and there are two key catalysts that could prevent such an outcome, besides the Fed of course. action this year. I provide some quick thoughts on what I've seen. Second, I look into PLTR's growth projections. I believe the aggression is hidden and I reveal why I feel that way. Third, I provide an overview of price-to-sales in PLTR's peer group, and what that means going forward, especially in light of revenue growth into 2025. Lastly, I revisit the topic of price but also price projections for investors.</p>\n<p><b>Rollercoaster</b></p>\n<p>Here's what's happened thus far in 2021.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8db04b39e358c9cdec5bc2d02251bd13\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"403\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">The summary is simple. We are back where we started in January. If you bought and then closed your eyes, you would have gone absolutely nowhere. And, if your eyes were wide open, you would have experienced rather significant volatility, bouncing up against $39 but also muddling through $18. It goes without saying that PLTR has moved 50% top to bottom. But, importantly, we are back where we started.</p>\n<p>Now, here's where it gets interesting, because just putting money into the NASDAQ (QQQ) would give you superior returns with far less stomach-churning volatility. I'm not concerned with owning QQQ. I'm more than happy to own PLTR because, as I'll show later, it's likely to 5x my investment from this point in time. In any case, take a look at the relative calm of QQQ.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5563cce1afd961f1fe70a3ad7af88891\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Here I want to add another layer of paint. We started with PLTR itself, then added QQQ. What happens when we go back in time to PLTR's direct listing?</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/804f2c567c89bab14a62ee5b333631bb\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">This is the picture that matters most to me. Here's what this means in simple terms, which is what works best in my mind. If you bought early, nothing really happened for a few weeks but then PLTR really took off. Therefore, early investors -<i>like me</i>- took the risk and have benefitted greatly despite all volatility after the directly public offering. With a long view, volatility is not a threat or a \"risk\", but instead, it's an opportunity to buy low.</p>\n<p>In any case, if you started buying in 2021, then you're slightly behind versus the market but your investment certainly isn't trash. Furthermore, if you literally bought in the early part of 2021, and you held, then nothing bad has occurred. You are up. Again, volatility shakes out the weak hands. Long term, volatility is just noise - the price gets more and more smooth, year by year.</p>\n<p>Here's the insight. Buying and holding PLTR has worked out fine, even spectacularly, unless you bought during the big spikes in January, February, and March. Of course, if you traded against PLTR by shorting and buying puts during those times, you did fine. That's not my game, but I can see why it appeals to traders.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, here's the key: For long-term buy-and-hold investors, PLTR is moving along just fine. Perhaps it's not winning like crazy in terms of price, but it's not exactly losing either. Our horizon is long and strong.</p>\n<p>There Is a Disturbance in the Force</p>\n<p>I'm rather surprised that there hasn't been more focus on PLTR's big picture projections. Specifically, I am talking about this:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/56383c3eaaea1d58abb1307e4fde30c6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"362\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Source:PLTR Q4 Business Update Presentation</p>\n<p>See the numbers there?<i>Revenue of $4 billion or more in 2025</i>.</p>\n<p>We also know that PLTR grew Q1 2021 revenue by49% year-over-year, generating $341 million across government and commercial segments. That's above the 45% revenue growth previously projected. That's a run rate of $800 million for 2021. And, for Q2 2021, revenue growth is expected to be 43%, which translates to $360 million.</p>\n<p>Those numbers for 2021 are fine and dandy and useful to hear. However, what I like more is that PLTR expects 30% growth in 2021 and the next four years. Yes, there's an implication of growth slowing in H2 of 2021, I see that too. However, we can run some pretty simple calculus with these numbers.</p>\n<p>First, we can start with the $800 million projection for 2021, check it against the 30% growth expectations. Here's how it lines up.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>2021 = $800 million</li>\n <li>2022 = $1,040 million (30% growth)</li>\n <li>2023 = $1,350 million (30% growth)</li>\n <li>2024 = $1,760 million (30% growth)</li>\n <li>2025 = $2,300 million (30% growth)</li>\n</ul>\n<p>In other words, when we start with $800 million for 2021, it's pretty obvious that the 30% growth doesn't cut it. We cannot reach $4 billion by 2025 with \"only\" 30% growth. PLTR is perhapssandbaggingto keep expectations lower. It's hard to know for sure. It could also be that they expect faster growth in 2022 through 2025. Let's run these numbers again with 40% growth.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>2021 = $800 million</li>\n <li>2022 = $1,120 million (40% growth)</li>\n <li>2023 = $1,570 million (40% growth)</li>\n <li>2024 = $2,195 million (40% growth)</li>\n <li>2025 = $3,070 million (40% growth)</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Once again, even with 40% year-over-year growth, we do not reach the $4 billion projected for 2025. Now, here's the first thing I want to point out about this oddity. My numbers might be wrong. My math might be too simple. I understand that possibility, but what this tells me is that PLTR has a different view of growth than my \"straight line\" projections. They are predators, but they are cautious too.</p>\n<p>What happens if we go a little crazy and use 49%, which is what PLTR achieved in Q1 2021. That's nearly 50% growth, of course. Here's how it looks using the same approach I've been using above.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>2021 = $800 million</li>\n <li>2022 = $1,200 million (49% growth)</li>\n <li>2023 = $1,776 million (49% growth)</li>\n <li>2024 = $2,246 million (49% growth)</li>\n <li>2025 = $3,943 million (49% growth)</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Hopefully, now it's clear why I'm so surprised that this hasn't been given more attention. While I realize I'm using \"straight line\" projections year-over-year, I'm kind of shocked that these assumptions and projections haven't been better analyzed until now. The numbers are obvious and simple, and coming straight from PLTR.</p>\n<p>Again, maybe I've got something wrong here, but to achieve $4 billion in revenue in 2025,<i>PLTR is going to have to grow by 50% every year</i>, from 2022 through 2025. That's an empirical necessity. Therefore, either PLTR is dead wrong and cannot achieve $4 billion in revenue, or perhaps they expect growth to be 50% year-over-year, or maybe that growth will be 40%, then 50%, then even higher. That is, they expect growth to accelerate.</p>\n<p>I don't believe that PLTR would knowingly publish expectations of $4 billion in 2025 without strong conviction. That is to say, it doesn't appear to be aspirational given their relatively cautious and conservative leadership. After all, theywaited 17 years to go public. Plus, with their load of government customers, it's not like they can fly by the seat of their pants. It is not in their DNA or the culture of the business from what I've seen.</p>\n<p>Peers and Price</p>\n<p>Here we take an interesting turn. Although I've written about PLTR many times, I haven't revealed something publicly before. Specifically, I have direct experience with a defense contractor. To be even more precise, I worked inside a defense contractor in a privileged position with access to an amazing crew of programmers, engineers, and technicians. That experience gave me a direct, hands-on, real-world view of how government contracting works, how the government embraces technology, and how the pieces and parts are all stitched together. I'll stop short at this point; I can't provide more details.</p>\n<p>What I can tell you is that my previous work experience has helped me take a long view on PLTR. To wit, I bought PLTR early and I haven't sold a single share. Furthermore, as you might know already, I've boughtPLTR LEAPS.</p>\n<p>Additionally, I've had several people reach out to me 1-to-1 about PLTR, including their experiences and their views. During one of these exchanges, a high ranking official and I came to agree on PLTR's peer group. I'm certainly not talking about true competitors here. I'm very specifically talking about reasonable<i>comparisons</i>for the sake of valuation. I'm talking about the general vibe of data analytics at enterprise scale, user behavior analytics, data frameworks, and so on, and so forth. Here's the list:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Snowflake (SNOW)</li>\n <li>Alteryx (AYX)</li>\n <li>Datadog (DDOG)</li>\n <li>Salesforce (CRM)</li>\n <li>Splunk (SPLK)</li>\n</ul>\n<p>It's not necessary to agree on all of these. Instead, these are merely a reasonable cluster of companies that have similar characteristics to PLTR, although I would offer that<i>none of them would be a true direct peer</i>. I do not see even a single company that is as rich and robust as PLTR, nevertheless, we need something of a \"peer group\" to move forward.</p>\n<p>Now, with this in mind, here's how we'll proceed. Since PLTR is so newly listed and it's relatively young on the public market, I will keep things simple. I'm very interested in earnings and profits, of course, but here I want to simply compare PLTR on the basis of sales. Therefore, I feel it's somewhat rational to compare PLTR using price-to-sales. Here's how PLTR stacks up.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c77f9e680346dc75cdad7e6073ba1c40\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"487\">Being really simple here, PLTR gets just 30-35% the P/S of SNOW. However, it gets triple that of CRM. That's quite a spread. Then again, SNOW is expecting 120% revenue growth in 2021 and86% in 2022. Right now, on the high end, SNOW has the growth edge. I am unclear about how that growth plays out into 2023, 2024, and 2025. I suspect the law of large numbers will kick in, and growth will slow. We'll see. Meanwhile, CRM is a large yet fast-growing company, clocking in with an impressive24% year-over-year revenue gain.</p>\n<p>I believe that SNOW's high growth rate will fall, as I hinted at above. Perhaps down into the 50-60% range over the next few years. We'll see. And, I believe that CRM will likely maintain a 22-25% growth rate. However, per PLTR's projections of $4 billion, I see growth above 30%. In fact, I see compound annual growth at 45-50%.</p>\n<p>In a funny way, all that doesn't even matter much. That's because the story I see is that PLTR doesn't need to massively grow beyond what we're already seeing. If we merely assume that PLTR can basically hang on to the growth it's getting right now - without any slowdown or acceleration - we can do some fun back-of-the-napkin math. The P/S ratios give us an indication that PLTR is trading at a price that is about right given its peers at this point in time. I'm not interested in SNOW vs. PLTR, or CRM vs. PLTR. I'm merely pointing out that PLTR's P/S is relatively rational given its growth. We can pivot a bit now.</p>\n<p>Here's another picture in my mind. If you take CRM and AYX, for example, both of which have a longer history than SNOW or PLTR, you can see that growing revenues translate to strongly growing stock prices. Furthermore, and more importantly, price growth roughly stays around revenue growth. Clearly, it's not perfect, but it sure looks highly correlated to me; 400% growth in AYX, and 150% growth in CRM. Timing matters here, of course, but the general trends here are telling.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/20e55c201426815f58f411103f705b88\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"453\">This makes me feel comfortable making some broad generalizations. I'm going to give year-by-year price ranges for PLTR given 30-50% growth rates. This is supported by what I've seen in PLTR's peer group, whereby P/S makes sense given growth rates, and the revenue growth vs. share price growth seems to mirror each other fairly well. I'm not trying to be exactly right here. I'm looking for potentiality, given publicly available information.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Today = $24</li>\n <li>2022 = $31 (30% growth)</li>\n <li>2023 = $41 (30% growth)</li>\n <li>2024 = $52 (30% growth)</li>\n <li>2025 = $69 (30% growth)</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Now, let's juice the growth to 40%.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Today = $24</li>\n <li>2022 = $34 (40% growth)</li>\n <li>2023 = $47 (40% growth)</li>\n <li>2024 = $66 (40% growth)</li>\n <li>2025 = $92 (40% growth)</li>\n</ul>\n<p>I still don't think that's accurate per my discussion up above. To achieve $4 billion in revenue, PLTR needs to hit about 50% growth every year. I'm going \"straight line\" again, with no assumptions about increasing or decreasing growth along the way. Again, I'm keeping this simple and easy. It would be understandable to be frustrated with PLTR if you bought around in the $35-45 range. On the other hand, if you bought down around $10-15, then you're probably feeling just fine. This isn't just how it works with PLTR, of course. Nevertheless, it's a healthy reminder.</p>\n<p>In the past, I've said I believe that PLTR will hit $75 by 2023. Even my relatively aggressive numbers above with 50% growth do not hit $75 in 2023, and in fact, I'm seeing $54 in 2023. However, here's the critical point. I still believe that PLTR is likely to hit $70-75 in 2023. I don't expect it to hold that price for long, but I do think because it's a growth company and because news and contacts are \"lumpy\" that we'll see spikes into the $70-75 range. Yet, since I don't trade, I'm fine sticking with my $50-55 normalized target. After all, I'm still doubling my money from this point. And it'll actually be about 5x my original investment in 2023 and 8-10x by 2025. I'm looking ahead about 3-4 years, and I'm seeing a 10-bagger for myself, given my cost basis. For most investors, PLTR appears to be an easy hold, and in fact, I think at $22-25, PLTR is a rational buy right now. We are back where we started in January. If you bought and then closed your eyes, you would have gone absolutely nowhere. And, if your eyes were wide open, you would have experienced rather significant volatility, bouncing up against $39 but also muddling through $18. It goes without saying that PLTR has moved 50% top to bottom. But, importantly, we are back where we started.\nNow, here's where it gets interesting, because just putting money into the NASDAQ (QQQ) would give you superior returns with far less stomach-churning volatility. I'm not concerned with owning QQQ. I'm more than happy to own PLTR because, as I'll show later, it's likely to 5x my investment from this point in time. In any case, take a look at the relative calm of QQQ.\nHere I want to add another layer of paint. We started with PLTR itself, then added QQQ. What happens when we go back in time to PLTR's direct listing?\nThis is the picture that matters most to me. Here's what this means in simple terms, which is what works best in my mind. If you bought early, nothing really happened for a few weeks but then PLTR really took off. Therefore, early investors -like me- took the risk and have benefitted greatly despite all volatility after the directly public offering. With a long view, volatility is not a threat or a \"risk\", but instead, it's an opportunity to buy low.\nIn any case, if you started buying in 2021, then you're slightly behind versus the market but your investment certainly isn't trash. Furthermore, if you literally bought in the early part of 2021, and you held, then nothing bad has occurred. You are up. Again, volatility shakes out the weak hands. Long term, volatility is just noise - the price gets more and more smooth, year by year.\nHere's the insight. Buying and holding PLTR has worked out fine, even spectacularly, unless you bought during the big spikes in January, February, and March. Of course, if you traded against PLTR by shorting and buying puts during those times, you did fine. That's not my game, but I can see why it appeals to traders.\nNevertheless, here's the key: For long-term buy-and-hold investors, PLTR is moving along just fine. Perhaps it's not winning like crazy in terms of price, but it's not exactly losing either. Our horizon is long and strong.\nThere Is a Disturbance in the Force\nI'm rather surprised that there hasn't been more focus on PLTR's big picture projections. Specifically, I am talking about this:\nSource:PLTR Q4 Business Update Presentation\nSee the numbers there?Revenue of $4 billion or more in 2025.\nWe also know that PLTR grew Q1 2021 revenue by49% year-over-year, generating $341 million across government and commercial segments. That's above the 45% revenue growth previously projected. That's a run rate of $800 million for 2021. And, for Q2 2021, revenue growth is expected to be 43%, which translates to $360 million.\nThose numbers for 2021 are fine and dandy and useful to hear. However, what I like more is that PLTR expects 30% growth in 2021 and the next four years. Yes, there's an implication of growth slowing in H2 of 2021, I see that too. However, we can run some pretty simple calculus with these numbers.\nFirst, we can start with the $800 million projection for 2021, check it against the 30% growth expectations. Here's how it lines up.\n\n2021 = $800 million\n2022 = $1,040 million (30% growth)\n2023 = $1,350 million (30% growth)\n2024 = $1,760 million (30% growth)\n2025 = $2,300 million (30% growth)\n\nIn other words, when we start with $800 million for 2021, it's pretty obvious that the 30% growth doesn't cut it. We cannot reach $4 billion by 2025 with \"only\" 30% growth. PLTR is perhapssandbaggingto keep expectations lower. It's hard to know for sure. It could also be that they expect faster growth in 2022 through 2025. Let's run these numbers again with 40% growth.\n\n2021 = $800 million\n2022 = $1,120 million (40% growth)\n2023 = $1,570 million (40% growth)\n2024 = $2,195 million (40% growth)\n2025 = $3,070 million (40% growth)\n\nOnce again, even with 40% year-over-year growth, we do not reach the $4 billion projected for 2025. Now, here's the first thing I want to point out about this oddity. My numbers might be wrong. My math might be too simple. I understand that possibility, but what this tells me is that PLTR has a different view of growth than my \"straight line\" projections. They are predators, but they are cautious too.\nWhat happens if we go a little crazy and use 49%, which is what PLTR achieved in Q1 2021. That's nearly 50% growth, of course. Here's how it looks using the same approach I've been using above.\n\n2021 = $800 million\n2022 = $1,200 million (49% growth)\n2023 = $1,776 million (49% growth)\n2024 = $2,246 million (49% growth)\n2025 = $3,943 million (49% growth)\n\nHopefully, now it's clear why I'm so surprised that this hasn't been given more attention. While I realize I'm using \"straight line\" projections year-over-year, I'm kind of shocked that these assumptions and projections haven't been better analyzed until now. The numbers are obvious and simple, and coming straight from PLTR.\nAgain, maybe I've got something wrong here, but to achieve $4 billion in revenue in 2025,PLTR is going to have to grow by 50% every year, from 2022 through 2025. That's an empirical necessity. Therefore, either PLTR is dead wrong and cannot achieve $4 billion in revenue, or perhaps they expect growth to be 50% year-over-year, or maybe that growth will be 40%, then 50%, then even higher. That is, they expect growth to accelerate.\nI don't believe that PLTR would knowingly publish expectations of $4 billion in 2025 without strong conviction. That is to say, it doesn't appear to be aspirational given their relatively cautious and conservative leadership. After all, theywaited 17 years to go public. Plus, with their load of government customers, it's not like they can fly by the seat of their pants. It is not in their DNA or the culture of the business from what I've seen.\nPeers and Price\nHere we take an interesting turn. Although I've written about PLTR many times, I haven't revealed something publicly before. Specifically, I have direct experience with a defense contractor. To be even more precise, I worked inside a defense contractor in a privileged position with access to an amazing crew of programmers, engineers, and technicians. That experience gave me a direct, hands-on, real-world view of how government contracting works, how the government embraces technology, and how the pieces and parts are all stitched together. I'll stop short at this point; I can't provide more details.\nWhat I can tell you is that my previous work experience has helped me take a long view on PLTR. To wit, I bought PLTR early and I haven't sold a single share. Furthermore, as you might know already, I've boughtPLTR LEAPS.\nAdditionally, I've had several people reach out to me 1-to-1 about PLTR, including their experiences and their views. During one of these exchanges, a high ranking official and I came to agree on PLTR's peer group. I'm certainly not talking about true competitors here. I'm very specifically talking about reasonablecomparisonsfor the sake of valuation. I'm talking about the general vibe of data analytics at enterprise scale, user behavior analytics, data frameworks, and so on, and so forth. Here's the list:\n\nSnowflake (SNOW)\nAlteryx (AYX)\nDatadog (DDOG)\nSalesforce (CRM)\nSplunk (SPLK)\n\nIt's not necessary to agree on all of these. Instead, these are merely a reasonable cluster of companies that have similar characteristics to PLTR, although I would offer thatnone of them would be a true direct peer. I do not see even a single company that is as rich and robust as PLTR, nevertheless, we need something of a \"peer group\" to move forward.\nNow, with this in mind, here's how we'll proceed. Since PLTR is so newly listed and it's relatively young on the public market, I will keep things simple. I'm very interested in earnings and profits, of course, but here I want to simply compare PLTR on the basis of sales. Therefore, I feel it's somewhat rational to compare PLTR using price-to-sales. Here's how PLTR stacks up.\nBeing really simple here, PLTR gets just 30-35% the P/S of SNOW. However, it gets triple that of CRM. That's quite a spread. Then again, SNOW is expecting 120% revenue growth in 2021 and86% in 2022. Right now, on the high end, SNOW has the growth edge. I am unclear about how that growth plays out into 2023, 2024, and 2025. I suspect the law of large numbers will kick in, and growth will slow. We'll see. Meanwhile, CRM is a large yet fast-growing company, clocking in with an impressive24% year-over-year revenue gain.\nI believe that SNOW's high growth rate will fall, as I hinted at above. Perhaps down into the 50-60% range over the next few years. We'll see. And, I believe that CRM will likely maintain a 22-25% growth rate. However, per PLTR's projections of $4 billion, I see growth above 30%. In fact, I see compound annual growth at 45-50%.\nIn a funny way, all that doesn't even matter much. That's because the story I see is that PLTR doesn't need to massively grow beyond what we're already seeing. If we merely assume that PLTR can basically hang on to the growth it's getting right now - without any slowdown or acceleration - we can do some fun back-of-the-napkin math. The P/S ratios give us an indication that PLTR is trading at a price that is about right given its peers at this point in time. I'm not interested in SNOW vs. PLTR, or CRM vs. PLTR. I'm merely pointing out that PLTR's P/S is relatively rational given its growth. We can pivot a bit now.\nHere's another picture in my mind. If you take CRM and AYX, for example, both of which have a longer history than SNOW or PLTR, you can see that growing revenues translate to strongly growing stock prices. Furthermore, and more importantly, price growth roughly stays around revenue growth. Clearly, it's not perfect, but it sure looks highly correlated to me; 400% growth in AYX, and 150% growth in CRM. Timing matters here, of course, but the general trends here are telling.\nThis makes me feel comfortable making some broad generalizations. I'm going to give year-by-year price ranges for PLTR given 30-50% growth rates. This is supported by what I've seen in PLTR's peer group, whereby P/S makes sense given growth rates, and the revenue growth vs. share price growth seems to mirror each other fairly well. I'm not trying to be exactly right here. I'm looking for potentiality, given publicly available information.\n\nToday = $24\n2022 = $31 (30% growth)\n2023 = $41 (30% growth)\n2024 = $52 (30% growth)\n2025 = $69 (30% growth)\n\nNow, let's juice the growth to 40%.\n\nToday = $24\n2022 = $34 (40% growth)\n2023 = $47 (40% growth)\n2024 = $66 (40% growth)\n2025 = $92 (40% growth)\n\nI still don't think that's accurate per my discussion up above. To achieve $4 billion in revenue, PLTR needs to hit about 50% growth every year. I'm going \"straight line\" again, with no assumptions about increasing or decreasing growth along the way. Again, I'm keeping this simple and easy. a letter sent t","content":"<p>In many ways, David Einhorn's Greenlight appears to be back to its \"new normal\" - in a letter sent to investors, Einhorn writes that Greenlight again underperformed the market and returned -0.1% in the first quarter, badly underperforming the 6.2% return for the S&amp;P 500 index, before proceeding to bash the Fed, broken markets, Chamath and Elon, the basket of short stocks and much more.</p><p>That said, even though as Einhorn writes Greenlight made only a handful of portfolio changes and essentially broke even, \"a lot happened. In general, the investment environment – especially from mid-February through the end of the quarter – was favorable as value outperformed growth, and interest rates and inflation expectations rose.\"</p><p>He then asks if the tide has<i><b>finally</b></i>turned from Growth to Value, noting that \"after a very tough decade, we have only just begun a recovery as shown in this 45-year chart from Goldman Sachs research:\"</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a5db342a0e7b68b8405ce6d4041b71a0\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"339\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Part of the shift from growth to value, Einhorn writes, may be coming from higher inflation and inflation expectations. As measured by the inflation swap market, 10-year inflation expectations fell from 2.9% in September 2012 to 0.8% in March 2020. The only significant intervening bounce came in 2016, when expectations jumped from 1.5% to 2.3% on expectations of a major stimulus deal from the Trump admin (which never materialized). It is hardly a coincidence that that was the only year in the last decade in which value outperformed growth, as the Greenlight head notes. Fast forward to now, when after bottoming in March 2020, inflation expectations have recovered to 2.5%. The trend became clearer in the middle of May, and value started outperforming growth then, and especially since the middle of February. Indeed, aince May 15, the value-heavy Greenlight returned 80% of the S&amp;P 500 index with half the net exposure.</p><p>Einhorn is even more optimistic about the future when it comes to the \"growth to value\" rotation:</p><blockquote><i>When the time comes, we will have to figure out how to perform better in deflationary periods. But for now, we believe inflation is only going one way – higher – and we are optimistic about our prospects. The wind is now at our backs. The economy is in full recovery mode. Household balance sheets are stronger than they have been in a long time and household income growth was up 13% in February compared to last year. And this is before the latest $1.9 trillion – with a “T” – pandemic relief stimulus. Corporate capital spending is booming. There are shortages and bottlenecks everywhere. Last month nearly one million jobs returned. There are signs of an emerging labor shortage.</i></blockquote><p>As for the Fed, the Greenlight boss writes that \"it fundamentally changed its framework last August. It no longer seems to care that monetary policy works with a lag. Actually, it has embraced an asymmetrical inflation policy: The Fed wants to be ahead of the curve on the downside to protect<s>the stock market and corporate bondholders</s>the economy. Behind the curve is fine on the way up no matter how frothy the stock market the recovery is. Now, it says it is only going to react to actual inflation that exceeds its 2% target for a period of time.\"</p><p>The letter then goes on to muse how the Fed will know when it is blowing the next bubble, and to stop:</p><blockquote><i>... the Fed has indicated that it believes any abnormally high inflation will be transitory. We wonder, how will the Fed know?</i> <i><b>Do price increases come with a label that says “transitory”?</b></i> <i>Our sense is that no matter how hot inflation gets in the coming months, the Fed will continue with zero interest rates and large-scale asset purchases. After all, the U.S. Treasury has a lot of debt to sell and it isn’t clear who, other than the Fed, can absorb the supply.</i></blockquote><p>It's not just Powell who is throwing caution to the wind: so are such mainstream econ \"experts\" as John Oliver:</p><blockquote><i>The bipartisan idea that deficits don’t matter has even reached popular culture. John Oliverdedicated an entire episodeof Last Week Tonight to browbeating anyone who is concerned about the growing national debt. His argument boiled down to: (1) nobody knows how much debt is too much; (2) we have a good need to spend money now; and (3) it won’t be a problem until inflation shows up, and we can deal with it then.</i></blockquote><p>To this, Einhorn's response is simple: \"Though one can debate whether the official government statistics are contrived to avoid capturing inflation\" - and as we have repeatedly noted, inflation is now decidedly a political measurement, one which has been gamed for decades to make it appears as low as possible \"shortages and bottlenecks accompanied by rising demand can only be solved through increased capacity and higher prices. We have also reset the baseline income for non-working adults; it will take higher wages to bring those marginally attached to the labor force back to work.\"</p><p>Concluding this part of the letter, Einhorn writes that while the Fed says it has the tools to fight inflation (and according to Bernanke can cut it in<i>15 minutes</i>), \"it remains to be seen if it will have the stomach to use them when the time comes. That<b>is a discussion for another day. Right now, we remain positioned for rising inflation and inflation expectations.</b>\"</p><p>The Greenlight letter then goes on to lay out just how it plans to capture these rising inflation expectations, listing its top positions as follows, and how they performed in the frist quarter:</p><ul><li><b>Brighthouse Financial (BHF, +22%)</b>benefitted from rising interest rates;</li><li><b>Danimer Scientific (DNMR, +61%)</b>began its life as a public company;</li><li><b>Concentrix (CNXC, +52%)</b>benefitted from strong demand and rising estimates;</li><li><b>Resideo Technologies (REZI, +33%)</b>was helped by the strong housing market;</li><li><b>Change Healthcare (CHNG, +18%)</b>agreed to be acquired by UnitedHealthcare;</li><li><b>AerCap Holdings (AER, +29%)</b>agreed to acquire GE Capital’s aircraft leasing business (GECAS) at a discount; and</li><li><b>An undisclosed healthcare short (-41%)</b>fell due to reduced government reimbursement for its product.</li></ul><p><i>(incidentally, at quarter-end, Greenlight's largest disclosed long positions were Atlas Air Worldwide, Brighthouse Financial, Change Healthcare, Danimer Scientific and Green Brick Partners, with a net average exposure of 118% long and 81% short).</i></p><p>Which is not to say that there were no glitches. One was underperformance by homebuilder and land-developer GRBK, the fund's largest position (more on this in the full letter below). The other performance drag was - as usual- Greenlight's \"short basket\" of bubble stocks.</p><p>What follows next is a tour de force from Einhorn lashing out at all the ways the market is broken, and how the Reddit insanity of Q1 exposed it for all to see:</p><blockquote><i>In late January, the market came to focus on companies with large short interests. Despite having a diversified portfolio, a number of our positions fell into this group and experienced sudden, sharp rises. We adjusted to the dynamic by reducing our exposure to single name shorts, both in number and sizing. To mitigate the potentially uncomfortable net long bias that would have resulted, we added macro hedges of market index and index option shorts. While we do not expect this to be a permanent change, we will evaluate and modify as we go.</i> <i><b>The performance of our short portfolio in 2020 and in early 2021 was unacceptable, so change is certainly needed.</b></i> <i>If we swing a little less hard, we should hit more balls. We have also revised our internal analyst incentive structure to fully emphasize alpha creation.Much has been made of the short-squeezes in late January. In fact, Congress held hearings, where it called the leaders of Robinhood, Melvin Capital and Citadel and an individual investor who made a great call on GameStop (GME) to testify. We have a few thoughts about this to share.</i> <i><b>First, it is very healthy for market participants to discuss and debate stocks.</b></i> <i>This is true both privately and publicly. There are rules about fraud and manipulation that need to be followed,</i> <i><b>but investors discussing why they think GME (or any other stock) should go up or down ought to be encouraged. There is no reason to drag anyone before Congress for making a stock pick.</b></i> <i>Second, it is also fine to make bad stock picks.</i> <i><b>If a hedge fund takes a big position in a stock and is wrong, it loses money. Isn’t this how it is supposed to work?</b></i> <i>Third,</i> <i><b>payment for order flow is just disguised commissions.</b></i> <i>We are in a world where consumers, especially young ones, expect internet services to be free, or at least free to them. A quote widely attributed to Richard Serra about commercial TV in 1973 says it best: “You’re not the customer; you’re the product.”</i> <i><b>If you want the broker to work for you, pay a commission.</b></i> <i>Fourth, Robinhood suspended trading in certain stocks because it was undercapitalized. It is possible that it wasn’t following the regulatory requirements. A regulatory sanction is probably appropriate – but as we’ll discuss below, we won’t be holding our breath.</i></blockquote><p>The punchline:<i>Einhorn slamming Chamath and Elon for pouring the \"real jet fuel\" on the GME squeeze:</i></p><blockquote><i>Finally, we note that the real jet fuel on the GME squeeze came from Chamath Palihapitiya and Elon Musk, whose appearances on TV and Twitter, respectively, at a critical moment further destabilized the situation.</i> <i><b>Mr. Palihapitiya controls SoFi, which competes with Robinhood, and left us with the impression that by destabilizing GME he could harm a competitor.</b></i> <i>As for Mr. Musk,</i> <i><b>we are going to defend him, half-heartedly. If regulators wanted Elon Musk to stop manipulating stocks, they should have done so with more than a light slap on the wrist when they accused him of manipulating Tesla’s shares in 2018. The laws don’t apply to him and he can do whatever he wants.</b></i> <i>Many who would never support defunding the police have supported – and for all intents and purposes have succeeded – in almost completely defanging, if not defunding, the regulators. For the most part, quasi-anarchy appears to rule in markets.</i> <i><b>Sure, Dr. Michael Burry, famed for his role in The Big Short, reportedly received a visit from the SEC after tweeting warnings about recent market trends – and decided to stop publicly speaking truth to power. But for the most part, there is no cop on the beat.</b></i> <i>It’s as if there are no financial fraud prosecutors; companies and managements that are emboldened enough to engage in malfeasance have little to fear.</i></blockquote><p>Einhorn then concludes with three anecdotes to demonstrate his argument that this is not only an \"anything goes\" market where crime is rampant, but proving just how broken the market has become.</p><p>First, consider the investigation of Tether by the Office of the Attorney General of New York (OAG). As Einhorn explains, \"tether is a cryptocurrency that is always worth a dollar (the value is “tethered” to the dollar). Tether is one of the largest cryptocurrencies with about $40 billion outstanding, yet it has not been audited or regulated in any serious manner. In theory, Tether is supposed to have $1 of cash backing every Tether issued. Except it didn’t, at least when it was investigated.\" Incidentally, for anyone still confused, Tether is how theChinese launder billions in domestic funds abroad and outside the Chinese firewallas we explained in December, although so far few have the desire to expose this reality. In any case, here is Einhorn's lament:</p><blockquote><i>The OAG conducted a two-year probe and found that Tether deceived clients and the market by overstating reserves and hiding approximately $850 million of losses around the globe. Tether and its sponsor, Bitfinex, “recklessly and unlawfully covered up massive financial losses to keep their scheme going and protect their bottom lines,” said the OAG. Further, “Tether’s claims that its virtual currency was fully backed by U.S. dollars at all times was a lie.”Did the OAG shut down Tether? Did anyone get arrested or even lose their job? Was the regulatory infrastructure changed to make sure this doesn’t happen again? No, of course not. The OAG assessed an $18.5 million penalty and Tether agreed to discontinue “any trading activity with New Yorkers.” It was as if Bernie Madoff had been told to pay a small fine and stop ripping off New Yorkers, but to go ahead and have fun with the Palm Beach crowd.</i></blockquote><p>Einhorn next highlights one of the stocks most hated by the bearish community: GSX:</p><blockquote>The media is focused on how the banks allowed excessive leverage and poorly (or properly) managed their risks. The real story is how Arch-Egos was able to buy up most of the float of GSX Techedu, <b>causing the stock to soar 400% in the face of unrefuted allegations of massive fraud.</b>The SEC has an ongoing investigation of GSX but appears to not have noticed a single fund (or a small group of funds) essentially cornering the market. A traditionalist could say this was market manipulation and transparently illegal.</blockquote><p>The professional poker player finally points out some of the insane moves observed in pennystocks in Q1, focusing on a tiny deli owner in rural NJ:</p><blockquote><i>Strange things happen to all kinds of stocks. Last year, on one day in June, the stocks of about a dozen bankrupt companies roughly doubled on enormous volume. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported a boom in penny stocks.Someone pointed us to Hometown International (HWIN), which owns a single deli in rural New Jersey. The deli had $21,772 in sales in 2019 and only $13,976 in 2020, as it was closed due to COVID from March to September.</i> <i><b>HWIN reached a market cap of $113 million on February 8.</b></i> <i>The largest shareholder is also the CEO/CFO/Treasurer and a Director, who also happens to be the wrestling coach of the high school next door to the deli. The pastrami must be amazing. In general, the investment environment – especially from mid-February through the end of the quarter – was favorable as value outperformed growth, and interest rates and inflation expectations rose.\"He then asks if the tide hasfinallyturned from Growth to Value, noting that \"after a very tough decade, we have only just begun a recovery as shown in this 45-year chart from Goldman Sachs research:\"Part of the shift from growth to value, Einhorn writes, may be coming from higher inflation and inflation expectations. As measured by the inflation swap market, 10-year inflation expectations fell from 2.9% in September 2012 to 0.8% in March 2020. The only significant intervening bounce came in 2016, when expectations jumped from 1.5% to 2.3% on expectations of a major stimulus deal from the Trump admin (which never materialized). It is hardly a coincidence that that was the only year in the last decade in which value outperformed growth, as the Greenlight head notes. Fast forward to now, when after bottoming in March 2020, inflation expectations have recovered to 2.5%. The trend became clearer in the middle of May, and value started outperforming growth then, and especially since the middle of February. Indeed, aince May 15, the value-heavy Greenlight returned 80% of the S&P 500 index with half the net exposure.Einhorn is even more optimistic about the future when it comes to the \"growth to value\" rotation:When the time comes, we will have to figure out how to perform better in deflationary periods. But for now, we believe inflation is only going one way – higher – and we are optimistic about our prospects. The wind is now at our backs. The economy is in full recovery mode. Household balance sheets are stronger than they have been in a long time and household income growth was up 13% in February compared to last year. And this is before the latest $1.9 trillion – with a “T” – pandemic relief stimulus. Corporate capital spending is booming. There are shortages and bottlenecks everywhere. Last month nearly one million jobs returned. There are signs of an emerging labor shortage.As for the Fed, the Greenlight boss writes that \"it fundamentally changed its framework last August. It no longer seems to care that monetary policy works with a lag. Actually, it has embraced an asymmetrical inflation policy: The Fed wants to be ahead of the curve on the downside to protectthe stock market and corporate bondholdersthe economy. Behind the curve is fine on the way up no matter how frothy the stock market the recovery is. Now, it says it is only going to react to actual inflation that exceeds its 2% target for a period of time.\"The letter then goes on to muse how the Fed will know when it is blowing the next bubble, and to stop:... the Fed has indicated that it believes any abnormally high inflation will be transitory. We wonder, how will the Fed know? Do price increases come with a label that says “transitory”? Our sense is that no matter how hot inflation gets in the coming months, the Fed will continue with zero interest rates and large-scale asset purchases. After all, the U.S. Treasury has a lot of debt to sell and it isn’t clear who, other than the Fed, can absorb the supply.It's not just Powell who is throwing caution to the wind: so are such mainstream econ \"experts\" as John Oliver:The bipartisan idea that deficits don’t matter has even reached popular culture. John Oliverdedicated an entire episodeof Last Week Tonight to browbeating anyone who is concerned about the growing national debt. His argument boiled down to: (1) nobody knows how much debt is too much; (2) we have a good need to spend money now; and (3) it won’t be a problem until inflation shows up, and we can deal with it then.To this, Einhorn's response is simple: \"Though one can debate whether the official government statistics are contrived to avoid capturing inflation\" - and as we have repeatedly noted, inflation is now decidedly a political measurement, one which has been gamed for decades to make it appears as low as possible \"shortages and bottlenecks accompanied by rising demand can only be solved through increased capacity and higher prices. We have also reset the baseline income for non-working adults; it will take higher wages to bring those marginally attached to the labor force back to work.\"Concluding this part of the letter, Einhorn writes that while the Fed says it has the tools to fight inflation (and according to Bernanke can cut it in15 minutes), \"it remains to be seen if it will have the stomach to use them when the time comes. Thatis a discussion for another day. Right now, we remain positioned for rising inflation and inflation expectations.\"The Greenlight letter then goes on to lay out just how it plans to capture these rising inflation expectations, listing its top positions as follows, and how they performed in the frist quarter:Brighthouse Financial (BHF, +22%)benefitted from rising interest rates;Danimer Scientific (DNMR, +61%)began its life as a public company;Concentrix (CNXC, +52%)benefitted from strong demand and rising estimates;Resideo Technologies (REZI, +33%)was helped by the strong housing market;Change Healthcare (CHNG, +18%)agreed to be acquired by UnitedHealthcare;AerCap Holdings (AER, +29%)agreed to acquire GE Capital’s aircraft leasing business (GECAS) at a discount; andAn undisclosed healthcare short (-41%)fell due to reduced government reimbursement for its product.(incidentally, at quarter-end, Greenlight's largest disclosed long positions were Atlas Air Worldwide, Brighthouse Financial, Change Healthcare, Danimer Scientific and Green Brick Partners, with a net average exposure of 118% long and 81% short).Which is not to say that there were no glitches. One was underperformance by homebuilder and land-developer GRBK, the fund's largest position (more on this in the full letter below). The other performance drag was - as usual- Greenlight's \"short basket\" of bubble stocks.What follows next is a tour de force from Einhorn lashing out at all the ways the market is broken, and how the Reddit insanity of Q1 exposed it for all to see:In late January, the market came to focus on companies with large short interests. Despite having a diversified portfolio, a number of our positions fell into this group and experienced sudden, sharp rises. We adjusted to the dynamic by reducing our exposure to single name shorts, both in number and sizing. To mitigate the potentially uncomfortable net long bias that would have resulted, we added macro hedges of market index and index option shorts. While we do not expect this to be a permanent change, we will evaluate and modify as we go. The performance of our short portfolio in 2020 and in early 2021 was unacceptable, so change is certainly needed. If we swing a little less hard, we should hit more balls. We have also revised our internal analyst incentive structure to fully emphasize alpha creation.Much has been made of the short-squeezes in late January. In fact, Congress held hearings, where it called the leaders of Robinhood, Melvin Capital and Citadel and an individual investor who made a great call on GameStop (GME) to testify. We have a few thoughts about this to share. First, it is very healthy for market participants to discuss and debate stocks. This is true both privately and publicly. There are rules about fraud and manipulation that need to be followed, but investors discussing why they think GME (or any other stock) should go up or down ought to be encouraged. There is no reason to drag anyone before Congress for making a stock pick. Second, it is also fine to make bad stock picks. If a hedge fund takes a big position in a stock and is wrong, it loses money. Isn’t this how it is supposed to work? Third, payment for order flow is just disguised commissions. We are in a world where consumers, especially young ones, expect internet services to be free, or at least free to them. A quote widely attributed to Richard Serra about commercial TV in 1973 says it best: “You’re not the customer; you’re the product.” If you want the broker to work for you, pay a commission. Fourth, Robinhood suspended trading in certain stocks because it was undercapitalized. It is possible that it wasn’t following the regulatory requirements. A regulatory sanction is probably appropriate – but as we’ll discuss below, we won’t be holding our breath.The punchline:Einhorn slamming Chamath and Elon for pouring the \"real jet fuel\" on the GME squeeze:Finally, we note that the real jet fuel on the GME squeeze came from Chamath Palihapitiya and Elon Musk, whose appearances on TV and Twitter, respectively, at a critical moment further destabilized the situation. Mr. Palihapitiya controls SoFi, which competes with Robinhood, and left us with the impression that by destabilizing GME he could harm a competitor. As for Mr. Musk, we are going to defend him, half-heartedly. If regulators wanted Elon Musk to stop manipulating stocks, they should have done so with more than a light slap on the wrist when they accused him of manipulating Tesla’s shares in 2018. The laws don’t apply to him and he can do whatever he wants. Many who would never support defunding the police have supported – and for all intents and purposes have succeeded – in almost completely defanging, if not defunding, the regulators. For the most part, quasi-anarchy appears to rule in markets. Sure, Dr. Michael Burry, famed for his role in The Big Short, reportedly received a visit from the SEC after tweeting warnings about recent market trends – and decided to stop publicly speaking truth to power. But for the most part, there is no cop on the beat. It’s as if there are no financial fraud prosecutors; companies and managements that are emboldened enough to engage in malfeasance have little to fear.Einhorn then concludes with three anecdotes to demonstrate his argument that this is not only an \"anything goes\" market where crime is rampant, but proving just how broken the market has become.First, consider the investigation of Tether by the Office of the Attorney General of New York (OAG). As Einhorn explains, \"tether is a cryptocurrency that is always worth a dollar (the value is “tethered” to the dollar). Tether is one of the largest cryptocurrencies with about $40 billion outstanding, yet it has not been audited or regulated in any serious manner. In theory, Tether is supposed to have $1 of cash backing every Tether issued. Except it didn’t, at least when it was investigated.\" Incidentally, for anyone still confused, Tether is how theChinese launder billions in domestic funds abroad and outside the Chinese firewallas we explained in December, although so far few have the desire to expose this reality. In any case, here is Einhorn's lament:The OAG conducted a two-year probe and found that Tether deceived clients and the market by overstating reserves and hiding approximately $850 million of losses around the globe. Tether and its sponsor, Bitfinex, “recklessly and unlawfully covered up massive financial losses to keep their scheme going and protect their bottom lines,” said the OAG. Further, “Tether’s claims that its virtual currency was fully backed by U.S. dollars at all times was a lie.”Did the OAG shut down Tether? Did anyone get arrested or even lose their job? Was the regulatory infrastructure changed to make sure this doesn’t happen again? No, of course not. The OAG assessed an $18.5 million penalty and Tether agreed to discontinue “any trading activity with New Yorkers.” It was as if Bernie Madoff had been told to pay a small fine and stop ripping off New Yorkers, but to go ahead and have fun with the Palm Beach crowd.Einhorn next highlights one of the stocks most hated by the bearish community: GSX:The media is focused on how the banks allowed excessive leverage and poorly (or properly) managed their risks. The real story is how Arch-Egos was able to buy up most of the float of GSX Techedu, causing the stock to soar 400% in the face of unrefuted allegations of massive fraud.The SEC has an ongoing investigation of GSX but appears to not have noticed a single fund (or a small group of funds) essentially cornering the market. A traditionalist could say this was market manipulation and transparently illegal.The professional poker player finally points out some of the insane moves observed in pennystocks in Q1, focusing on a tiny deli owner in rural NJ:Strange things happen to all kinds of stocks. Last year, on one day in June, the stocks of about a dozen bankrupt companies roughly doubled on enormous volume. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported a boom in penny stocks.Someone pointed us to Hometown International (HWIN), which owns a single deli in rural New Jersey. The deli had $21,772 in sales in 2019 and only $13,976 in 2020, as it was closed due to COVID from March to September. HWIN reached a market cap of $113 million on February 8. The largest shareholder is also the CEO/CFO/Treasurer and a Director, who also happens to be the wrestling coach of the high school next door to the deli. The pastrami must be amazing. Tesla put its second manufacturing facility in Shanghai for a reason, after all. Nio, along with its state-owned manufacturing partner JAC Motor, began expanding its manufacturing base in the city of Hefei, China in April 2021. That work will officially double the company's capacity to 240,000 vehicles per year, though the company has said with additional shifts and other arrangements, total capacity could reach 300,000 annually.</p>\n<p>Nio is planning on selling those vehicles beyond China as well. Though China may be the biggest auto market, Europe is currently the world's fastest-growing EV market. In 2020, Europe had the largest annual increase in battery electric vehicles, according to the International Energy Agency. Nio is trying to take advantage of that with a move into Norway this year, and plans to begin sales in Germany next year.</p>\n<p>Nio isn't just looking at a European business as a place to sell vehicles. In Norway, it has set up a division that includes its Nio House community, and plans to establish its Nio Power infrastructure there. Nio Power includes a battery swap subscription service where customers pay a recurring fee to be able to quickly pull into stations and have a fully charged battery installed in a matter of minutes.</p>\n<p>Nio hopes the additional volume of sales will bring it the scale it needs to reach profitability. It has said it is adding three new products next year as well, including the ET7 luxury electric sedan that will mark its first model beyond an SUV design. Investors are counting on Nio growing successfully. The company already has a market cap of more than $60 billion. But a successful business that scales up over time could justify that valuation. Shares are down more than 25% since July 2021, providing an opportunity to start a long-term position.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F645091%2Farrivalwhitevan.png&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"437\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ARVL\">Arrival</a> electric delivery van. Image source: Arrival.</span></p>\n<h2>Arrival: Taking a unique approach</h2>\n<p>U.K.-based EV maker <b>Arrival</b> (NASDAQ:ARVL) has a different business strategy than most. The company makes electric buses and delivery vans, and has plans for a car designed to be used for ride-hailing services. It announced plans for the car earlier this year in a partnership with <b>Uber Technologies</b>.</p>\n<p>Rather than utilizing centralized manufacturing facilities, Arrival is setting up \"microfactories\" near customer locations. Its first two plants in the U.S. are in South Carolina and North Carolina, the latter of which is to supply early investor and future customer <b>United Parcel Service</b>. Arrival has said UPS has plans to order at least 10,000 of its electric delivery vehicles. All told, the company said in its second-quarter financial update that as of August 2021, Arrival has order interest or letters of intent for almost 60,000 vehicles.</p>\n<p>Arrival is building the microfactories to supply this potential demand. They can be built in existing warehouses in some cases, located near customer fleet centers, put in service more quickly, and constructed with a lower amount of capital than traditional factories. Arrival has a large amount of operational and financial risk, as it is already valued with a market cap of about $9 billion. But the stock could add diversity to an EV portfolio if one is willing to take on the risks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F645091%2Fchargepoint_home_flex4.png&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: ChargePoint.</span></p>\n<h2>ChargePoint: Growing a charging network</h2>\n<p>Leading EV charging network company <b>ChargePoint Holdings</b> (NYSE:CHPT) offers another avenue of diversity with a stake in the EV charging space. At the end of its fiscal 2022 second-quarter period (ended July 31, 2021), ChargePoint had almost 120,000 active charging ports in the U.S., Europe, and India. It reported year-over-year revenue growth of 61% in that period, and raised its full-year revenue guidance by 15% to a range of $225 million to $230 million.</p>\n<p>The majority of that revenue currently comes from building out the network hardware. Longer term, however, investors are looking for subscription revenue that comes from software services for its commercial, fleet, and residential customers. That will be used for scheduling and fueling optimization in addition to maintenance service subscriptions.</p>\n<p>ChargePoint is the leading charging hardware provider in North America, and is expanding in Europe. There's no question that if EVs become as ubiquitous as many predict, there will be much more expansion to come. The investment thesis, however, needs to also rely on the recurring revenue that ChargePoint management predicts is coming. That's where much of the risk lies with ChargePoint. But if investors are looking to have a stake in EVs for the long haul, including charging infrastructure makes sense. That work will officially double the company's capacity to 240,000 vehicles per year, though the company has said with additional shifts and other arrangements, total capacity could reach 300,000 annually.\nNio is planning on selling those vehicles beyond China as well. Though China may be the biggest auto market, Europe is currently the world's fastest-growing EV market. In 2020, Europe had the largest annual increase in battery electric vehicles, according to the International Energy Agency. Nio is trying to take advantage of that with a move into Norway this year, and plans to begin sales in Germany next year.\nNio isn't just looking at a European business as a place to sell vehicles. In Norway, it has set up a division that includes its Nio House community, and plans to establish its Nio Power infrastructure there. Nio Power includes a battery swap subscription service where customers pay a recurring fee to be able to quickly pull into stations and have a fully charged battery installed in a matter of minutes.\nNio hopes the additional volume of sales will bring it the scale it needs to reach profitability. It has said it is adding three new products next year as well, including the ET7 luxury electric sedan that will mark its first model beyond an SUV design. Investors are counting on Nio growing successfully. The company already has a market cap of more than $60 billion. But a successful business that scales up over time could justify that valuation. Image source: Arrival.\nArrival: Taking a unique approach\nU.K.-based EV maker Arrival (NASDAQ:ARVL) has a different business strategy than most. The company makes electric buses and delivery vans, and has plans for a car designed to be used for ride-hailing services. It announced plans for the car earlier this year in a partnership with Uber Technologies.\nRather than utilizing centralized manufacturing facilities, Arrival is setting up \"microfactories\" near customer locations. Its first two plants in the U.S. are in South Carolina and North Carolina, the latter of which is to supply early investor and future customer United Parcel Service. Arrival has said UPS has plans to order at least 10,000 of its electric delivery vehicles. All told, the company said in its second-quarter financial update that as of August 2021, Arrival has order interest or letters of intent for almost 60,000 vehicles.\nArrival is building the microfactories to supply this potential demand. They can be built in existing warehouses in some cases, located near customer fleet centers, put in service more quickly, and constructed with a lower amount of capital than traditional factories. Arrival has a large amount of operational and financial risk, as it is already valued with a market cap of about $9 billion. But the stock could add diversity to an EV portfolio if one is willing to take on the risks.\nImage source: ChargePoint.\nChargePoint: Growing a charging network\nLeading EV charging network company ChargePoint Holdings (NYSE:CHPT) offers another avenue of diversity with a stake in the EV charging space. At the end of its fiscal 2022 second-quarter period (ended July 31, 2021), ChargePoint had almost 120,000 active charging ports in the U.S., Europe, and India. It reported year-over-year revenue growth of 61% in that period, and raised its full-year revenue guidance by 15% to a range of $225 million to $230 million.\nThe majority of that revenue currently comes from building out the network hardware. Longer term, however, investors are looking for subscription revenue that comes from software services for its commercial, fleet, and residential customers. That will be used for scheduling and fueling optimization in addition to maintenance service subscriptions.\nChargePoint is the leading charging hardware provider in North America, and is expanding in Europe. There's no question that if EVs become as ubiquitous as many predict, there will be much more expansion to come. The investment thesis, however, needs to also rely on the recurring revenue that ChargePoint management predicts is coming. That's where much of the risk lies with ChargePoint. But if investors are looking to have a stake in EVs for the long haul, including charging infrastructure makes sense.
