Through this past weekend, the broad-based <b>S&amp;P 500</b> had gained 25%, which is more than double its average annual total return, including dividends, of 11% over the past four decades.</p>\n<p>But for some ultra-popular stocks, their growth period is just beginning. According to Wall Street's consensus estimate, three widely followed companies are expected to deliver sales growth in 2022 ranging from a low of 981% to as much as 5,569%</p>\n<h2>Sundial Growers: Consensus estimate of 981% sales growth in 2022</h2>\n<p>The first ultra-popular stock expected to deliver a more than tenfold increase in revenue for the upcoming year is Canadian marijuana stock <b>Sundial Growers</b> (NASDAQ:SNDL). Wall Street has Sundial pegged to bring in almost $540 million in sales in 2022, up from an estimated $50.5 million this year.</p>\n<p>Cannabis is a rapidly growing industry, and Canada was the first developed country to give adult-use weed the green light. Since the Oct. 17, 2018, legalization of recreational pot, legal weed sales have been on a fairly steady incline.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Canadian licensed producers (LPs) have fared poorly. National and provincial regulators have been slow to authorize growing and retail licenses, and the LPs themselves did a poor job of managing their assets, budgeting their cash, and assessing the actual demand for pot products.</p>\n<p>The reason Sundial is expected to deliver such a sizable jump in revenue next year has everything to do with acquisitions and virtually nothing to do with organic growth. In July, Sundial closed a cash-and-stock deal to acquire retailer <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/INSHF\">Inner Spirit Holdings</a>. It's also in the midst of purchasing liquor store chain <b>Alcanna</b> (OTC:LQSIF) in an all-stock deal that was initially valued at $346 million.&nbsp; The Alcanna buyout, should it close, will represent the bulk of Sundial's sales boost in 2022.</p>\n<p>While I understand that some investors are fascinated by penny stocks and believe they offer more upside potential than established companies with higher share prices, this rarely turns out to be the case. Sundial, whose shares could be purchased for less than $0.59 as of this past weekend, has been burying its investors under the weight of new share issuances for 14 months and counting. The company has issued approximately 1.6 billion new shares over that time, and rather than utilize its cash to acquire Alcanna, the company intends to issue another 387.3 million shares. In other words, Sundial could be weeks away from having 2.5 billion shares outstanding.</p>\n<p>With so many shares outstanding and cannabis operations that have gone nowhere in years, Sundial's chance of generating a meaningful per-share profit is pretty much zero. At this point, a reverse split might be the only thing that'll save this \"growth stock\" from delisting.</p>\n<h2>Inovio Pharmaceuticals: Consensus estimate of 3,258% sales growth in 2022</h2>\n<p>Another ultra-popular company that's expected to deliver jaw-dropping sales growth next year is clinical-stage biotech stock <b>Inovio Pharmaceuticals</b> (NASDAQ:INO). Wall Street anticipates Inovio will see sales skyrocket from a consensus of just $7.4 million this year to almost $126 million in 2022. That's an increase of well over 3,200%.</p>\n<p>Though Inovio has an extensive pipeline that covers infectious diseases, cancer, and human papillomavirus-targeted diseases, Wall Street's aggressive sales growth estimate appears to be tied to the company's development of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine.</p>\n<p>At the moment, Inovio has two COVID-19 candidates in development. INO-4800 is the furthest along, with phase 3 global studies under way via the Innovate trial. The other is INO-4802, a preclinical \"next-generation\" COVID-19 vaccine targeted at major variants of the disease.</p>\n<p>While Inovio looked as if it would be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the first drugmakers to reach late-stage clinical trials in the U.S. last year, everything came crashing to a halt when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed a partial clinical hold on INO-4800 and the company's proprietary hand-held delivery device, Cellectra in September 2020. This partial hold on phase 3 trials was only lifted last month. Thus, for 14 months, Inovio couldn't advance its COVID-19 vaccine to late-stage trials in the U.S. and was forced to take its large-scale study overseas.</p>\n<p>Perhaps the bigger concern for investors is that Inovio Pharmaceuticals has never brought a drug to pharmacy shelves. As noted, Inovio is never hurting for promising preclinical and clinical candidates. But more than four decades after its inception, Inovio still doesn't have a way to generate recurring revenue. Though it's possible INO-4800 joins a crowded field of COVID-19 vaccine candidates, history suggests disappointment is the more likely outcome.</p>\n<h2>Nikola: Consensus estimate of 5,569% sales growth in 2022</h2>\n<p>However, the biggest growth opportunity, at least on this list, comes from electric vehicle (EV) and fuel-cell EV manufacturer <b>Nikola</b> (NASDAQ:NKLA). The expectation is for Nikola to grow revenue from an estimated $2.6 million in 2021 to about $148.5 million next year. That's an increase of more than 5,500%.</p>\n<p>Developed countries are going to take whatever steps they can over the coming years and decades to combat climate change. One of the easiest and most visible ways to reduce our carbon footprint is to go green with EVs. Replacing consumer and commercial vehicles is a multidecade process that could very well allow a dozen or more new automakers to shine. Nikola, which primarily targets enterprise fleets, is aiming to be one of those transformative businesses.</p>\n<p>The boost in sales for Nikola is almost certainly the result of landing two agreements in October. The company secured a letter of intent from PGT Trucking for 100 Nikola Tre heavy-duty fuel-cell EVs, and formed a collaboration with <b>TC Energy</b>&nbsp;to develop hydrogen hubs for the refueling of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks.</p>\n<p>But for all the positive news and momentum in the sails of the EV industry, Nikola has been shrouded by a dark cloud. It began last year, when noted short-side firm Hindenburg Research alleged Nikola was a fraud. Although many of Hindenburg's claims would be proved untrue by an independent review, certain allegations, including Nikola's pre-sell figures, were deemed to be inaccurate. This led the Securities and Exchange Commission to probe the company.</p>\n<p>Additionally, founder Trevor Milton, who stepped down last year, was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice this past July for making false and misleading statements to retail investors.</p>\n<p>What excitement did surround Nikola has long since disappeared as investor trust in the company has been decimated. But beneath the surface, there’s an oddly compelling case for the business and the stock.</p>\n<p>Palantir (ticker: PLTR) provides data analytics software to both commercial and government clients. The 18-year-old company has two primary platforms—Gotham, for government applications, and Foundry, for commercial customers. Palantir has a long history of serving U.S. military and intelligence agencies, but lately it’s&nbsp;been building out its sales team to bulk up its commercial business. That plan seems to be getting traction.</p>\n<p>Palantir went public in a direct listing last September, with the stock&nbsp;opening at $10. It’s since taken shareholders on a wild ride, trading as high as $45 earlier this year. It’s now around $25, still up 150% from listing day.</p>\n<p>In its&nbsp;recently reported June quarter, Palantir posted revenue of $376 million, up 49% from the year-earlier level. The company got a big boost from its U.S. commercial business, which grew 90%. Palantir sees September quarter revenue inching up to $385 million, and it continues to forecast annual top-line growth of 30%-plus through 2025.</p>\n<p>But the core story gets lost in the noise—Palantir seems to thrive on controversy. Almost everything it does is outside the box. Before last year’s stock listing, Palantir quietly moved its headquarters to Denver from Palo Alto. The reasoning boils down to politics.</p>\n<p>“When we started the company in 2004, the idea was to bring world-class software to our intelligence and military communities,” Palantir CEO Alex Karp&nbsp;told me in a June interview. “Numerous companies in Silicon Valley have refused either overtly, tacitly, or by dragging their feet, to work with the U.S. government. … I believe in general there’s a choice to be made in the world, and America has serious, rigorous, intelligent, and sometimes ruthless adversaries.”</p>\n<p>Palantir has also been doing unusual things with the $2.4 billion in cash on its balance sheet. The company is&nbsp;aggressively investing in PIPEs, or private investments in public equities, which are used in almost every SPAC merger to increase the capital raised. Palantir has&nbsp;committed $310 million across more than a dozen SPACs, or special purpose acquisition companies, according to its latest SEC filing. It’s completed $33 million of equity investments across three other companies.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The most recent tranche includes $20 million for Fast Radius, which offers a “cloud manufacturing platform;” $15 million for Tritium, a developer of electric vehicle chargers; $15 million for AdTheorent, which sells advertising software driven by machine learning; and $10 million for FinAccel, an Asian financial-services company.</p>\n<p>All the targets have signed up to be Palantir customers. As of June 30, Palantir said it had commercial contracts with its SPAC portfolio companies with a potential value of $428 million; the revenue contribution in the latest quarter was just $3 million, or less than 1% of the total.</p>\n<p>SPACs are a highly speculative place for a public company to be parking its cash. But I’d argue that Palantir’s decision to provide capital to new customers isn’t so different from offering vendor debt financing for hardware purchases—as&nbsp;IBM(IBM) and HP Enterprise (HPE) do—or from running robust venture capital programs, as do&nbsp;Intel(INTC) and&nbsp;Salesforce.com(CRM).</p>\n<p>Even so, it makes some analysts squeamish. “While we don’t oppose thinking outside the box, we think the strategy may have been taken too far, particularly with software contracts that appear to be negotiated alongside an investment by Palantir in the same customer,” Citi’s Tyler Radke wrote in a recent research note.</p>\n<p>The outside-the-box strategy goes beyond SPACs. This past week, Palantir disclosed that it had purchased $50.7 million worth of 100-ounce gold bars—a pretty strange move, even for Palantir. I ran a text search in the SEC’s database looking for references to gold bars, and found only references to other gold companies. The move makes&nbsp;Tesla’s(TSLA) Bitcoin purchases seem mundane.</p>\n<p>The fact that Palantir decided to buy physical gold, rather than, say, the&nbsp;SPDR Gold Shares&nbsp;ETF (GLD), makes it odder still. Palatnir ends up looking like the corporate equivalent of a doomsday prepper. I tried to follow-up with Karp to ask about the sudden interest in gold, but Palantir declined to make him available.</p>\n<p>One analyst who follows the company told me that the SPAC program and the foray into gold make Palantir a hard sell for institutional investors. You can see that in the shareholder base. Institutions hold only 25% of Palantir shares—compared with&nbsp;Oracle’s(ORCL) 46%,Snowflake’s(SNOW) 58%, and&nbsp;Microsoft’s(MSFT) 71%.</p>\n<p>But the same analyst is still bullish on Palantir and says it offers “a very interesting set of solutions to buyers that require scale and sophistication.”</p>\n<p>Palantir has a fanatical following among individual investors, and the company is playing to its fans. During its June-quarter earnings call, Palantir took nine questions from retail investors and just four from analysts.</p>\n<p>On traditional metrics, Palantir isn’t cheap. The stock trades for 25 times estimated 2022 sales. But strip away the craziness, and Palantir looks like the single best bet on the future of complex data analytics. Epstein has pushed back his target date for Virgin orbital travel from 2028 to 2035 and is removing his 2035 target for high speed point-to-point travel.</p>\n<p>In terms of upcoming stock catalysts, Epstein said the October 2021 lock-up expirations could pressure Virgin’s stock.</p>\n<p>“We see short term downside pressure to the stock price as a) delayed commercialization results in lack of catalysts, b) the market stays attentive to the next equity raise, and c) the next lock-up period expires,” Epstein said.</p>\n<p><b>Benzinga’s Take:</b>&nbsp;With Virgin generating a $644-million net loss on less than $300,000 in revenue in 2020, any delays in the path to a commercial launch are understandably concerning for investors.</p>\n<p>If Epstein’s new targets are correct, it also appears that at least the next 14 years will be all about sub-orbital travel for Virgin.</p>","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; It was added to the index in August 2020 (in the midst of the pandemic) along with <b>Amgen</b> (NASDAQ:AMGN) and <b>Honeywell</b> (NASDAQ:HON), replacing more-traditional stocks like <b>ExxonMobil</b>, <b>Pfizer</b>, and <b>Raytheon Technologies</b>.</p>\n<p>That round of swapping was the latest in a bigger effort to bring the index further into the 21st century. Unsurprisingly, it has juiced the Dow's returns just a bit. It's up more than 90% for the past five years despite the early 2020 swoon linked to the onset of COVID-19, and higher by 200% for the past 10 years.</p>\n<p>Salesforce didn't contribute to most of that bullish effort, but don't be surprised if it's a key driver of similar gains in the Dow over the next five- and 10-year stretches.</p>\n<h2>Salesforce's bright future</h2>\n<p>If you're not familiar with it, Salesforce is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the original companies to commercialize cloud computing, before the term even began to be widely used. Its online customer database and customer-management platform were launched in 1999, and there was nothing else quite like it at the time.</p>\n<p>That's certainly changed in the meantime. Not only is the customer relationship management (CRM) space now relatively crowded with competitors, but after 22 years of availability, the whole CRM thing has seemingly run most of its course. What's left?</p>\n<p>As it turns out, for Salesforce, quite a lot.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/70402b628ff39aa410477caa22af642c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"525\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>The best days for basic CRM offerings might be in the rearview mirror, but what lies ahead are all sorts of revenue-bearing integrations with Salesforce's existing platform. For instance, earlier this week <b>FedEx</b> announced a partnership with Salesforce that will offer e-commerce and supply chain tools to business clients with such a need. In July, Salesforce completed its acquisition of intra-enterprise communication platform Slack, and by August had integrated its CRM tools with Slack's user interface. Salesforce-owned Tableau, which helps organizations collect and analyze all sorts of data, unveiled changes to its service earlier this month that will make it more secure, yet also easier to use at a greater scale.</p>\n<p>And this is just a recent sampling of how the company continues to improve its suite of services. Others have yet to be imagined. They're coming, though, spurred by the emerging new norm in workplaces: working from home (or at least working there more often).</p>\n<h2>Capitalizing on the new norm</h2>\n<p>This wasn't exactly the plan a year ago. Most organizations that expected employees to regularly report to an office before the pandemic similarly expected them to return to the office once the pandemic had passed. Working from home has worked out better than most organizations could have hoped, however, and given that the coronavirus has yet to fully pass (and might never really do so), at least some companies are rethinking their office-attendance policies altogether.</p>\n<p>Take researcher Omdia's recent Future of Work survey as an example. It indicates that more than two-thirds of all U.S. employers believe overall productivity has improved since workers were allowed to do their jobs outside of a centralized office. The same survey suggests more than half of all employees will be doing at least some work from home for the indefinite future.</p>\n<p>In this vein, PwC reports that 72% of U.S. executives currently plan to increase their investment in virtual (online) collaboration tools. Technology market researcher IDC forecasts that spending on work-based software -- including cloud-based collaboration and analytics tools -- will grow more than 21% per year through 2024.</p>\n<p>It all plays right into Salesforce's hands, setting the stage for the stock to move from its current price near $257 to a value in excess of $500.</p>\n<h2>Bottom line</h2>\n<p>There's still something of a wait before we see that move fully pan out, to be clear.</p>\n<p>Salesforce is in the right place at the right time, and it's poised for more double-digit percentage growth for the next several years. But there are limits.
