Not diversifying enough
\n
Diversifying your portfolio is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself against loss. By investing in many securities, you ensure that no single one has too great an effect on your portfolio. When one stock price drops, you'll have others to pick up the slack.
\n
\n
It's not quite as simple as investing in multiple stocks, though. You also need to make sure you have your money spread around in many sectors, so that if one is hit hard (as was the case with a lot of tourism-related businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic), you won't lose everything. You should have some of your money in bonds and other safe investments as well to balance out the stocks you own.
\n
One of the simplest ways to diversify your portfolio quickly is to invest in an index fund. These are collections of stocks that track a market index, like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). They often contain hundreds of stocks in several industries, and they generate returns that are very similar to their underlying index. Their fees are pretty affordable too. Some of the most popular S&P 500 index funds have expense ratios of just 0.03%. That means you only pay $3 per year if you have $10,000 invested.
\n
2. Emotional buying and selling
\n
Hearing a lot of chatter about a stock on social media can make some inexperienced investors tempted to buy a lot of it in the hopes of becoming an overnight millionaire. And seeing a stock in their portfolio plummet can make some want to sell for fear of losing even more if they hold onto the stock.
\n
But it's often best to avoid these rash moves. If you guess wrong, you could waste your money on a stock going nowhere or turn a temporary loss into a permanent one by selling too soon. Instead, do your research into an investment before buying or selling. Focus on its long-term growth potential. Don't worry about day-to-day shifts unless you begin to notice a larger trend that suggests the company may be heading for trouble.
\n
3. Investing money you'll need in the next few years
\n
Keep money you plan to spend in the next five to seven years out of the stock market if you can. Investing is one of the best ways to grow your wealth over the long term, but the stock market's volatility makes it a bad place for short-term investments. If you need your money at a certain time, you have to sell, regardless of what your shares are worth at the time. That could mean taking a huge loss.
\n
If you'd rather not leave your money in a savings account earning next to no interest, try stashing it in a high-yield savings account or a certificate of deposit (CD) instead. These won't give you the same returns that investing your money could, but there's no risk of loss. Plus, savings accounts enable you to withdraw your funds at any time. CDs typically don't allow you to withdraw money before the CD term is up, or else you'll pay a penalty. But that shouldn't be an issue if you know you won't need your money for a while.
\n
The underlying thread in all three of the mistakes above is not thinking about how your decisions could affect your finances down the road. Even when times are good, you should always be thinking about how your portfolio will fare in a market crash, because you never know when the next one's going to happen.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Investing Mistakes That Could Wipe You Out in a Market Crash
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Investing Mistakes That Could Wipe You Out in a Market Crash\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-01 17:40 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Just about everyone will lose money when the stock market takes a dip. That compares to $554 million forthe January 2021 fiscal year.
\n
Snowflake (ticker: SNOW) should still be growing 30% at the top-line at that point, according to chief financial officer Mike Scarpelli, while generating 10% operating margins and free cash flow margins of 15% or better. Updated iMessage features. An overhaul of the iPad operating system","content":"
(CNN Business)Revamped MacBooks. Updated iMessage features. An overhaul of the iPad operating system.
\n
These are among the announcements Apple (AAPL) may make this week during its Worldwide Developer Conference, a multi-day event that kicks off Monday. The annual event is typically a chance for the tech company to introduce changes to the software used everyday by millions of people.
\n
eyond new gadgets and the introduction of iOS 15, WWDC will also be an opportunity for Apple to address its developer community in the midst of two major recent spats with app makers — a contentious legal battle with Fortnite-maker Epic Games over its App Store fees and a feud with Facebook (FB) over Apple's new app-tracking privacy policy.
\n
This year, for the second time, Apple's WWDC will be held online, though there will still be plenty for developers to do virtually, including more than 200 sessions on how to build new apps and services.
\n
The event begins with a keynote at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, June 7. Updated iMessage features. An overhaul of the iPad operating system.\nThese are among the announcements Apple (AAPL) may make this week during its Worldwide Developer Conference, a multi-day event that kicks off Monday. The annual event is typically a chance for the tech company to introduce changes to the software used everyday by millions of people.\neyond new gadgets and the introduction of iOS 15, WWDC will also be an opportunity for Apple to address its developer community in the midst of two major recent spats with app makers — a contentious legal battle with Fortnite-maker Epic Games over its App Store fees and a feud with Facebook (FB) over Apple's new app-tracking privacy policy.\nThis year, for the second time, Apple's WWDC will be held online, though there will still be plenty for developers to do virtually, including more than 200 sessions on how to build new apps and services.\nThe event begins with a keynote at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, June 7. Here's what to expect based on the latest reports and rumors.\nNew gadgets\nThe most significant hardware announcement expected during WWDC is the introduction of a redesigned 16-inch MacBook Pro, and possibly a 14-inch version, too, Bloomberg has reported.\nThe device — like other recent computer and iPad launches from the company — would likely be built with Apple's M1 chip, which it has said provides longer battery life and faster processing speeds, among other benefits. Analysts will be watching for any data from Apple on how many users have stopped sharing data with apps since the feature went into effect in April.\nThe company may also introduce even more ways for users to control what data they share with developers and app makers in the latest iOS update.\n\"We expect data privacy and security to be a main focus and theme of [CEO Tim] Cook's keynote as Apple solidifies its privacy policy with the iOS 15 unveil,\" Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said in an investor note last week.\nScrutiny amid Epic trial\nThe developer conference comes weeks after Apple's blockbuster trial against Fortnite maker Epic Games, in which the 30% commission that Apple takes from developers was heavily scrutinized.\n\"In light of the controversy kicked up by the recent lawsuit with Epic, Apple will likely go out of its way to reassure the developer community that it has their best interests at heart,\" CCS Insight's Wood said.\nThe conference was mentioned on the stand during the trial: An Apple executive revealed that the company spends $50 million a year to put WWDC together, in an effort to shore up its argument that it does a lot to support developers.\n\"We turn the place upside down for developers,\" Cook said during his testimony, citing the company's responsiveness to developer complaints.\nBut Cook also acknowledged during his testimony that Apple's ultimate allegiance and priority is its users.\n\"We're making decisions in the best interests of the user,\" he said, \"and I think it's important to note that sometimes there's a conflict between what the developer may want and what the user may want.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":46,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":118755971,"gmtCreate":1622763484593,"gmtModify":1634098344233,"author":{"id":"3578965435978206","authorId":"3578965435978206","name":"pandajojo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7efe44a2514d987c5a8b342b85d6f229","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578965435978206","idStr":"3578965435978206"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Under valued stock. The agency's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program will distribute $17 billion in an effort to support new research and manufacturing efforts in the United States.\nRare earth minerals:The Department of Interior will lead a task force to identify sites wherecritical minerals could be producedand processed in the United States.\" The report said the U.S. will develop the capacity for \"sustainable production, refining, and recycling\" of the 17 rare earth metals used in cell phones, cars and magnets, while meeting high environmental standards.\nSemiconductors:As the nation grapples witha semiconductor shortage that has idled major auto manufacturing plants, the White House said it will work with the private sector to increase supply chain transparency.\nAdvanced pharmaceutical ingredients:The Department of Health and Human Services will use authority granted under the Defense Production Act to commit approximately $60 million to \"develop novel platform technologies to increase domestic manufacturing capacity for API.\"\n\nIn addition to these steps, designed to boost supplies of specific products, the administration also announced several broader initiatives.\nTo help train the workers that will be needed to staff these new projects, the White House will announce $100 million in additional grants to support state-led apprenticeship expansion efforts. The grants will be administered by the Department of Labor.\nThe Department of Energy will announce a new policy that requires awardees of DOE research and development grants to \"substantially manufacture those products in the United States.\"\nAlong with these efforts to bolster domestic supply chains, the Biden administration will also announce new steps to combat \"unfair foreign trade practices,\" which it says have contributed to the erosion of supply chains around the world.\nOne of these will be the creation of a \"trade strike force\" led by the U.S. Trade Representative's office. The strike force will aim to identify \"unilateral and multilateral\" enforcement actions the United States can take to punish countries that it believes are engaging in unfair trade practices. According to a senior administration official, the strike force will focus on developing U.S.-China trade policies.\nThe other enforcement-related action will be an evaluation, led by the Department of Commerce, of whether to initiate an investigation into neodymium magnets under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.\nThe rare earth magnets are used in motors and electronics by both civilians and the military. If the investigation were to conclude that U.S. national security is threatened by foreign supplies of neodymium, it could open the door to import restrictions or tariffs.\nBiden's predecessor, Donald Trump, invoked Section 232 twice during his one term as president, citing it as his justification for imposing broad steel and aluminum tariffs. Those tariffs are still in place, and Biden has not said whether he will lift them or not.\nA senior administration official who briefed reporters emphasized that Biden's trade policy actions are fundamentally different from Trump's trade wars, because they are carefully targeted.\n\"We're not looking to wage trade wars with our allies and partners,\" said the official. \"We're looking at very targeted products where we think there are effective tools we could deploy to strengthen our own supply chains and reduce vulnerabilities.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":38,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":197691914,"gmtCreate":1621459708738,"gmtModify":1634189075781,"author":{"id":"3578965435978206","authorId":"3578965435978206","name":"pandajojo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7efe44a2514d987c5a8b342b85d6f229","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578965435978206","idStr":"3578965435978206"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like n comment pl","listText":"Like n comment pl","text":"Like n comment pl","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/197691914","repostId":"1103552481","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1103552481","pubTimestamp":1621428667,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1103552481?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-05-19 20:51","market":"us","language":"en","title":"3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1103552481","media":"Barrons","summary":"The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but inv","content":"
The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.
\n
The minutes are due out at 2 p.m. today, and Fed watchers may face a greater challenge than usual in deciphering their significance: A lot has changed in the economy since the April 28-29 meeting. The ensuing weeks have brought a surprisingly weak jobs report and a stronger-than-expected consumer inflation report, for example.
\n
And unlike last month’s meeting, there wasn’t an attention-grabbing selloff in Treasuries to command officials’ attention. The steep climb in yields abated at the end of March, even as economic data showed and stronger price pressures in April. The 10-year yield has dropped to 1.64% from 1.74% on March 31.
\n
Yet the document may still provide some clues about the central bank’s views. And officials have provided more perspective on policy since the latest meeting as well. Notably, Fed Vice Chair Richard Clarida spoke at a conference on Monday and discussed some recent economic data points as well.
\n
Here’s what strategists expect out of the meeting today, and what Clarida said about the topics:
\n
“Attuned and Attentive” to “Transitory” Inflation?
\n
One popular line among Fed officials, including Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been the assurance that this spring is expected to bring a “transitory” rise in inflation, mostly related to the reopening of the U.S. economy after the pandemic brought a sharp deceleration in activity last year.
\n
Mizuho economists Steven Ricchiuto and Alex Pelle wrote in a May 18 note that they expect “several mentions of ‘transitory’ price pressures” in the minutes. They also highlighted that many of the steepest increases in consumer prices in April were in sectors where demand had been hit most by the pandemic, such as hotels and airfares. “So far [that] validates the Fed’s thinking,” they added.
\n
Yet at Monday’s conference, Clarida seemed to be repeating a different type of assurance about inflation: That the central bank would be “attuned and attentive” to any data showing higher price pressures.
\n
“In the CPI report, [reopening] did clearly put upward pressure on prices. Now our baseline view is that most of this is likely to be transitory, but we have to be attuned and attentive to the incoming data,” he said. “[The] key element of our mandate is price stability and an important component of price stability is well-anchored inflation expectations. If we were to see upward pressure on prices or inflation that threatened to put inflation expectations higher, I have no doubt we would use our tools to address that situation.”
\n
Taper Timeline
\n
Investors will also be looking to see if the central bank provides any additional guidance on when it might start paring back its $120 billion in monthly bond purchases. Powell has said the Fed wants to make “substantial further progress” toward its goals of full employment and a long-term average of 2% inflation before it wants to pare down its purchases, but officials haven’t provided much additional guidance.
\n
Most on Wall Street expect the Fed to discuss longer-term plans to reduce, or taper, its purchases late this summer or during the fall. NatWest Markets said in a Monday note that it expects the Fed to start talking about tapering its purchases in September and actually start to reduce the pace of bond-buying next year.
\n
So any more detailed discussion in the latest meeting minutes could come as a surprise to investors and potentially matter for markets.
\n
Labor-Market Outlook
\n
One key factor that will determine the outlook for the Fed’s bond buying (and other accommodation) is the recovery in the labor market. And that remains up in the air, after the disappointing April jobs report.
\n
Still, there is a chance investors could find more context on one of their questions in the minutes: How much improvement will be enough for the Fed to start withdrawing accommodation? In other words, what does “substantial further progress” mean?
\n
Before the disappointing news on April’s labor market, most of Wall Street expected a strong month for jobs creation, another step toward the “string” of strong months of recovery that Powell had said was needed before the U.S. achieved “substantial further progress” toward the Fed’s goals. That may have prompted officials to discuss just how far along the recovery would need to go before the central bank could start stepping back.
\n
Clarida discussed the April employment report on Monday as well.
\n
“What the April employment report said to me is that the way we bring supply and demand into balance in the labor market, especially in the service sector, may take some time and may produce some upward pressure on prices as workers return to employment, so we have to be attuned and attentive to that data flow,” he said. “Per that April employment report, we have not made substantial further progress, but as the data comes in we as a committee will have to evaluate that, and ultimately make a judgment.”
\n
Ultimately, the importance of future labor-market data hints at the broader takeaway from the Fed’s meeting minutes: Coming months’ economic data may be the final arbiter of what the Fed does, and its plans to remove accommodation from markets and the economy. And the economic data has been so volatile during the reopening that the picture could change significantly by the time the Fed meets again in June.
\n
That means investors will have to hold tight for a while longer to get a sense of when the central bank plans to start stepping back.
\n
“We’re reluctant to call this an equilibrium of any sort – rather it’s much more likely to prove a temporary holding pattern as macro expectations are further refined,” wrote Ian Lyngen, strategist with BMO. “Clearly, we have more questions than answers.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Things to Watch for in the Fed Minutes Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-19 20:51 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.\nThe minutes are due out at 2 p.m. ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://www.barrons.com/articles/inflation-jobs-and-more-to-watch-for-in-todays-fed-minutes-release-51621421812?mod=hp_LEAD_3","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1103552481","content_text":"The Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes aren’t expected to make much of a splash today, but investors should still keep an eye out for a few different themes.\nThe minutes are due out at 2 p.m. today, and Fed watchers may face a greater challenge than usual in deciphering their significance: A lot has changed in the economy since the April 28-29 meeting.
