Prisons, in an effort to avoid bringing the coronavirus into their populations, stopped accepting new prisoners. Court closures meant fewer people were being sentenced, and parole officers were less active and sent fewer people back to prison for parole violations.</p>\n<p>On top of that, with the change of government in Washington, this isn't the best of times to be in the private prison business. On Jan. 26, President Biden signedan executive orderdirecting the Justice Department not to renew its contracts with private prison operators.</p>\n<p>The order applies to any private facilities connected with the Bureau of Prisons and the U.S. Marshals Service. It doesn't yet apply to all agencies. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, for example, has contracts with private companies, including the GEO Group, to detain undocumented immigrants.</p>\n<p>Looking at a recent investor presentation by the company, it's easy to see that the eventual result of Biden's policy could be a 27% cut to GEO Group's revenue.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8ccfe516df8184f834d5e735cc660d07\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"415\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>IMAGE SOURCE: THE GEO GROUP</p>\n<p>Even before the executive order, the Bureau of Prisons chose not to renew its contracts with three GEO facilities; those contracts expire this quarter. The company said its remaining Bureau of Prisons contracts may also not be renewed as they come up.</p>\n<p>In March, GEO learned that the Marshals Service would not renew its contract for the company's 222-bed Queens Detention Facility in New York. The facility generated $19 million annually in revenues, the company said.</p>\n<p><b>The dividend may be safe, but the share price not so much</b></p>\n<p>You have to give GEO credit for doing the smart thing, trimming its quarterlydividend29.2% to 34 cents a share last year and then again by 26.5% to 25 cents a share this year.</p>\n<p>While the cuts are concerning, the dividend appears well covered by the company's expected adjusted funds from operations (FFO) this year, which management said should be in the range of $1.98 per share to $2.08 per share.</p>\n<p>The company's 2020 revenue of $2.35 billionwas down from the $2.47 billion it brought in for 2019, and net income of $113 million was down from $166 million the year before. In the fourth quarter, its revenue of $578.1 million was a 7% drop year over year. It was also the fourth consecutive quarter of top-line declines.</p>\n<p>REITs are better analyzed on the basis of their FFOs, and those metrics fell for GEO Group as well. The company reported yearly normalized FFO of $229.3 million, down from $260.7 million in 2019; adjusted FFO was $300.6 million, compared to $328.4 million in 2019. GEO's adjusted FFO last year was at its lowest level since 2016.</p>\n<p><b>GEO Group is fighting against trends</b></p>\n<p>Unlike some REITs that were adversely affected during the global pandemic by tenants that had difficulty paying the rent, GEO's customers are government agencies that always pay the rent on time.</p>\n<p>The difficulty GEO faces is that the population of prisoners in its facilities has been dropping, and that trend appears likely to continue. Baidu was trading slightly lower in Hong Kong at the open.</p><p>Investors and analysts cited blocks of Viacom and Discovery shares being put in the market on Friday for likely exacerbating the decline in those stocks. Viacom was also downgraded by Wells Fargo on Friday.</p><p>The block trades were linked to sales of holdings by Archegos, a source familiar with the situation said, confirming reports elsewhere. CNBC reportedhereon Saturday that the selling pressure was due to liquidation of positions by family office Archegos Capital Management, citing a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The link with Archegos was also earlier reported by IPO Edgehere.</p><p>A person at Archegos who answered the phone on Saturday declined to comment. Archegos was founded by Bill Hwang, who founded and ran Tiger Asia from 2001 to 2012, when he renamed it Archegos Capital and made it a family office, according to a page capturehereof the fund's website. Tiger Asia was a Hong Kong-based fundherethat sought to profit on bets on securities in Asia.</p><p>Prior to starting Tiger Asia, Hwang was an equity analyst for Tiger Management according to Archegos' websitehere. Tiger Management, run by Julian Robertson, was a hugely successful hedge fund, which returned investor money and shutherein 2000.</p><p>Hwang in 2012 settledhereinsider trading charges by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission according to a press releasehereat the time. He and his firms at the time agreed to pay $44 million to settle, according to the release.</p><p><b>VOLATILITY CONCERNS</b></p><p>Some market participants said last week’s wild moves were likely to make investors increasingly cautious.</p><p>“It’s insane,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA. “When you consider how some of these companies have skyrocketed over the last few months, there will be concerns that we are over-levered.”</p><p>Other market participants said potential unwinds would only have a limited impact on broader markets. The Nasdaq Composite and S&amp;P 500 both surged over 1% on Friday despite the sharp selloffs in Viacom and other stocks.</p><p>“These stories around fund liquidations happen from time to time,” said Michael Antonelli, market strategist at Baird. “Some of the names where big blocks were traded on Friday might see some near-term volatility as traders wonder whether the selling is complete.”</p><p>Mike O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading said he expected the trades to “largely be done.”</p><p>“The prime brokers made lots of noise in marketing these blocks,” O’Rourke said. “They knocked the stocks down aggressively in order to get the trades done.”</p><p>O’Rourke added that prime brokers typically go long the remnants of the position, and he expected most of the names involved in the block trades to be “gapping up significantly higher” in premarket trading.</p><p>In more potentially unnerving news for investors, Japan’s Nomura Holdings Inc on Monday flagged a potential $2 billion loss at a U.S. subsidiary although traders were not clear whether it was related to Archegos.</p><p><b>BANKS INVOLVED</b></p><p>A number of banks were involved in the block sales. A source familiar with the matter said on Saturday that Goldman Sachs Group Inc was involved in the large blocktrades. The Financial Times reported that Morgan Stanley sold $4billion worth of shares early on Friday, followed by another$4 billion in the afternoon.</p><p>A source familiar with the matter said Deutsche Bank was involved with the block trades as well. Planet 13</h2>\n<p>Are you looking for a stock that will boom in a post-pandemic world? How about <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> that is in a high-growth industry? Planet 13 checks both those boxes. The Las Vegas-based cannabis producer has enormous potential. Although it has been delivering strong results amid the pandemic, as governments lift COVID-19 restrictions, the sky is only the limit for the pot stock. I only hope that it drops in value before that happens.</p>\n<p>Over the past 12 months, its shares are up a ridiculous 709%, blowing past the <b>S&amp;P 500</b>, which has risen 60% during that time. And it is easy to see why investors are excited. Voters in four states chose to legalize marijuana for recreational use in November 2020, and more markets could open up soon, including New York, which is taking a serious look at legalization this year. The growing optimism surrounding legalization (including at the federal level) has many pot stocks doing well; the <b>Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF</b> has climbed nearly 155% in the past 12 months.</p>\n<p>Planet 13 last reported earnings on Nov. 24, 2020, when sales of $22.8 million for the period ending Sept. 30, 2020, rose 36.5% year over year. But with travel in and around the U.S. down due to the pandemic, the company can generate a whole lot more growth once governments lift restrictions. Its dispensary in Las Vegas, called the \"Superstore,\" is 112,000 square feet in size and features many other businesses; the company hopes it will become a tourist attraction that brings in more than just cannabis consumers. Planet 13 is planning to launch a second location in Santa Ana, California, later this year. At 55,000 square feet, it won't be nearly as big as the Las Vegas location, but it will be strategic, just 10 minutes away from Disneyland.</p>\n<p>The only thing that keeps me from buying the stock is its price. Its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio (this is used rather than earnings as the company remains unprofitable) is around 15 -- well above the 4.6 times sales that the average stock on the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF trades at. Planet 13 is too pricey a buy right now, but that could change if there is a market crash.</p>\n<h2>2. Starbucks</h2>\n<p>Starbucks is a great buy-and-forget stock because of the company's cult following and strong, consistent sales numbers. Even though COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns have hindered its business over the past year, Starbucks is showing resilience. On Jan. 26, the company released its first-quarter results for fiscal 2021, and comparable-store sales in the U.S. were down a modest 5% for the period ending Dec. 27, 2020.</p>\n<p>Aside from <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> bad period in 2020 for the third quarter ending June 28, 2020, where sales of $4.2 billion declined by 38% year over year (due to pandemic-related lockdowns), the company's sales have stayed at or around $6 billion in revenue in each period during the pandemic. And its profit margins have also remained relatively steady at 5% or better, although they're below the 10%-or-higher margins Starbucks has enjoyed in previous years. Still, given the headwinds from COVID-19 (e.g. supply shortages and higher prices), it's not too surprising that the company's bottom line wasn't as strong in 2020.</p>\n<p>Starbucks is optimistic for the current fiscal year (which ends in September), anticipating that global comparable-store sales will grow at a rate of 18% to 23%, and that in the U.S. and Americas they will rise between 17% and 22%. It is projecting per-share profits as high as $2.62 (including a $0.10 impact from a 53rd week). That would indicate a near-complete recovery from the $2.92 earnings per share Starbucks reported in fiscal 2019.</p>\n<p>In the past 12 months, shares of Starbucks have risen more than 50%. And with a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 38, this is a bit of a steep price to pay right now given that the average stock in the <b>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;</b>trades at only 28 times earnings. Starbucks is a great stock, but the price isn't right to buy it just yet.</p>\n<h2>3. Square</h2>\n<p>Square has a great business model for an era in which people are trying to avoid holding cash due to the pandemic. The company's terminals make it easy to transact using debit and credit cards, without the need to rent a costly device from a bank. Anyone can become a merchant without the hassle of worrying about paying monthly fees even if they aren't using the devices. Not only was that nearly nine times higher than 2019's tally of $516 million, but it now accounts for nearly half of the company's sales, which totaled $9.5 billion last year. In 2019, Bitcoin sales represented just 11% of Square's top line. Outside of Bitcoin, Square generated $4.9 billion in sales in 2020, which was a 17% improvement from the previous year.</p>\n<p>The exposure to Bitcoin can both be a blessing and a curse for Square, because if the digital currency crashes as it did in 2018, Square could go along with it. And a good way to do that is to keep track of quality stocks that are simply too expensive to be investing in right now. That way, if there is a crash, you can act quickly and not miss out on deals that may not last for long.\nThree stocks currently on my watchlist that I would love to grab if there is a correction include Planet 13 Holdings (OTC:PLNH.F), Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), and Square (NYSE:SQ). Planet 13\nAre you looking for a stock that will boom in a post-pandemic world? How about one that is in a high-growth industry? Planet 13 checks both those boxes. The Las Vegas-based cannabis producer has enormous potential. Although it has been delivering strong results amid the pandemic, as governments lift COVID-19 restrictions, the sky is only the limit for the pot stock. I only hope that it drops in value before that happens.\nOver the past 12 months, its shares are up a ridiculous 709%, blowing past the S&P 500, which has risen 60% during that time. And it is easy to see why investors are excited. Voters in four states chose to legalize marijuana for recreational use in November 2020, and more markets could open up soon, including New York, which is taking a serious look at legalization this year. The growing optimism surrounding legalization (including at the federal level) has many pot stocks doing well; the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF has climbed nearly 155% in the past 12 months.\nPlanet 13 last reported earnings on Nov. 24, 2020, when sales of $22.8 million for the period ending Sept. 30, 2020, rose 36.5% year over year. But with travel in and around the U.S. down due to the pandemic, the company can generate a whole lot more growth once governments lift restrictions. Its dispensary in Las Vegas, called the \"Superstore,\" is 112,000 square feet in size and features many other businesses; the company hopes it will become a tourist attraction that brings in more than just cannabis consumers. Planet 13 is planning to launch a second location in Santa Ana, California, later this year. At 55,000 square feet, it won't be nearly as big as the Las Vegas location, but it will be strategic, just 10 minutes away from Disneyland.\nThe only thing that keeps me from buying the stock is its price. Its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio (this is used rather than earnings as the company remains unprofitable) is around 15 -- well above the 4.6 times sales that the average stock on the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF trades at. Planet 13 is too pricey a buy right now, but that could change if there is a market crash.\n2. Starbucks\nStarbucks is a great buy-and-forget stock because of the company's cult following and strong, consistent sales numbers. Even though COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns have hindered its business over the past year, Starbucks is showing resilience. On Jan. 26, the company released its first-quarter results for fiscal 2021, and comparable-store sales in the U.S. were down a modest 5% for the period ending Dec. 27, 2020.\nAside from one bad period in 2020 for the third quarter ending June 28, 2020, where sales of $4.2 billion declined by 38% year over year (due to pandemic-related lockdowns), the company's sales have stayed at or around $6 billion in revenue in each period during the pandemic. And its profit margins have also remained relatively steady at 5% or better, although they're below the 10%-or-higher margins Starbucks has enjoyed in previous years. Still, given the headwinds from COVID-19 (e.g. supply shortages and higher prices), it's not too surprising that the company's bottom line wasn't as strong in 2020.\nStarbucks is optimistic for the current fiscal year (which ends in September), anticipating that global comparable-store sales will grow at a rate of 18% to 23%, and that in the U.S. and Americas they will rise between 17% and 22%. It is projecting per-share profits as high as $2.62 (including a $0.10 impact from a 53rd week). That would indicate a near-complete recovery from the $2.92 earnings per share Starbucks reported in fiscal 2019.\nIn the past 12 months, shares of Starbucks have risen more than 50%. And with a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 38, this is a bit of a steep price to pay right now given that the average stock in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust trades at only 28 times earnings. Starbucks is a great stock, but the price isn't right to buy it just yet.\n3. Square\nSquare has a great business model for an era in which people are trying to avoid holding cash due to the pandemic. The company's terminals make it easy to transact using debit and credit cards, without the need to rent a costly device from a bank. Anyone can become a merchant without the hassle of worrying about paying monthly fees even if they aren't using the devices.
