It may surprise you to learn that technology stocks actually make up over a quarter of the whole index, and that's dominated by big companies like Apple and Microsoft. Similarly, the energy sector, which is actually the best-performing sector of 2021 (even better than tech) only makes up 3% of the index. So, the energy sector could double and it would contribute less than Microsoft stock's 3.47 percentage point contribution so far this year.
\n
MSFT data by YCharts
\n
What to do about it
\n
One of the biggest mistakes we can make as investors is obsessing over short- to mid-term performance. Zooming in to a particular quarter undermines the big picture. For example, there are plenty of stocks that absolutely crushed the market in 2020 that are underperforming or even down big this year (think Zoom, PayPal, Square, Teladoc, and Peloton, to name a few).
\n
While it's easy to say that those companies are underperformers this year, keep in mind they are still net winners over the last two years.
\n
A note of reassurance
\n
Let's say that for a few years now, you've been underperforming the market because you haven't held the stocks that have really driven the index's returns. The truth of the matter is that you're still probably a lot better off because you were in the market in the first place. So if you're up, let's say, half of what the index is, you're still growing your wealth at a much quicker pace than folks who aren't in the market at all.
\n
The most important priority is your financial goals. If you're investing in dividend stocks to supplement income in retirement, then you're playing a different game than growth-oriented investors. Similarly, if you're a value investor who focuses on stodgy, slow-growing, but safe companies that let you sleep at night, then it's simply expected that you're going to underperform a growth-driven market.
\n
Focus on what really matters
\n
The point here is that comparing your performance to the S&P 500, for better or for worse, is usually unhelpful. As long as you're investing in companies, cryptos, or other securities that you understand and that are helping you reach your goals, then the rest is little more than bragging rights.
\n
The market moves in cycles. And while we may be living in a multi-year period of growth (especially mega-cap tech growth), there could be a few years where it shifts from growth to value, or from large-cap tech growth to small-cap growth. Hopefully, you're left with a better understanding of what's really driving the S&P 500 and why it's so easy to underperform if you didn't own stocks like Microsoft, Nvidia, or Tesla this year.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Don't Own These 10 Stocks? Amazon.com
\n
Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) belongs in the group of Buffett's laggards. Shares of the internet giant have risen only around 8% this year, well behind Berkshire's overall performance. However, there are few stocks of large companies that have as clear of a growth runway as Amazon does.
\n
Let's start with the near term. Amazon expects record holiday sales in the fourth quarter of $135 billion. Twelve-digit quarterly revenue has become standard fare for the company. Amazon is investing heavily in adding capacity to support its fulfillment operations. That's an obvious sign that the company anticipates significant growth in the future.
\n
This isn't a surprise. Amazon's healthcare moves in online pharmacy and telehealth could also pay off nicely. I don't see this stock staying a laggard for very long.
\n
2. Apple
\n
Not all of the FAANG stocks are underperformers this year. Shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) have soared more than 20%. And that impressive gain came despite the company posting disappointing Q3 results.
\n
Investors are focusing on the future with Apple -- just as they should be. The company continues to ride the wave of 5G adoption. Its iPhone sales seem likely to reach record levels this holiday season unless supply chain issues serve as a damper. The company could unveil its augmented reality (AR) headset next year, and it's working on AR glasses. Apple is also reportedly developing a self-driving electric car.
\n
Buffett likes Apple so much that it's the largest holding in Berkshire's portfolio. I fully expect that the stock will keep up its winning ways for years to come.
\n
3. Mastercard
\n
You might be at least a little surprised that I've included Mastercard (NYSE:MA) on this list. After all, the stock has fallen more than 10% so far in 2021. But there's still a lot to like about Mastercard.
\n
The company makes money from transaction fees every time one of its credit cards is used to make a purchase. With the rise of e-commerce and the shift away from cash with in-store purchases, Mastercard's credit cards will almost certainly be used a lot more in the future.
\n
Although Mastercard is already a global company, it still has plenty of growth opportunities in developing regions. For example, Mastercard's recent acquisition of fintech company Arcus FI should help boost its presence in the Latin American market.
\n
Two potential growth drivers for Mastercard might not receive as much attention as they deserve. The company's \"buy now, pay later\" program is picking up momentum. But with the broad S&P 500 index near all-time highs, the prospect of opening new positions can be daunting given that many popular stocks are looking quite expensive.
\n
If you're willing to venture off the beaten path, some pockets of the market are still attractively priced, though.
\n
Cohu (NASDAQ:COHU) is a semiconductor service company that Wall Street thinks could almost double from here, and action-camera company GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO) has just delivered consecutive blockbuster quarterly results, spurring an analyst upgrade from well-respected investment bank Morgan Stanley this week.
\n
These two stocks are just getting warmed up, and here's why they could be big-time contributors to your portfolio next year.
\n
The case for Cohu
\n
Cohu supplies testing and handling equipment to the world's largest semiconductor producers, designed to speed up the manufacturing process of fragile and highly valuable computer chips.
\n
A crippling semiconductor shortage has raged throughout 2020 and 2021, triggered by pandemic-related production shutdowns across Asia. These advanced computer chips are critical to most digital consumer goods, from mobile devices all the way up to new cars, and the inability to access them has caused a price surge in many of these products.
\n
The new vehicle market was arguably the most impacted sector, with some dealerships reporting an 80% decline in their inventories. As a result, the price of a new car is up almost 10% in the last 12 months, and the price of a used car is up a whopping 26% as consumers settle for pre-owned models instead.
\n
Cohu is playing a crucial role in alleviating these issues by focusing on the automotive segment, which is now its largest, accounting for 18% of total revenue. Its Neon inspection system is designed to detect defects in some of the world's smallest automotive-related semiconductors while still handling them at high speeds to prevent manufacturing delays.
\n
This equipment is in high demand from semiconductor producers who need to quickly expand capacity to clear backlogs, and as such, Cohu is having its most profitable year since 2017. It's set to grow revenue by 39% compared to 2020, with $3.01 in earnings per share.
\n
Based on its current share price of $36, it trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of just 12, about 65% cheaper than the broad iShares Semiconductor ETF, which trades at a multiple of 35. It's therefore within the realm of probability that the stock could double from here -- yet even if it did, it would still be cheaper than its peers in the industry.
\n
The case for GoPro
\n
Action camera leader GoPro is a corporate comeback story for the ages. Its stock fell 97% between its public listing in 2014 and the 2020 pandemic, yet it has been resurrected by a strong performance from its management team. They've pivoted the company away from a one-dimensional revenue stream, and set up a booming subscription business with extremely high profit margins.
\n
GoPro's new HERO10 Black camera shoots video in 5.2K high definition at a price point of just $499 -- its most comparable competitor, according to the company, is priced at $3,500. Traditionally, GoPro has sold its cameras through some of the largest retailers in the world, but it's currently shifting to a more direct-to-consumer model using its GoPro.com website. It means higher gross margins for the company, as it now keeps the retailers' cut.
\n
But perhaps more notably is the new GoPro.com subscription. For $49.99 per year, brand loyalists can access exclusive product discounts, unlimited cloud storage, live streaming, and damaged product replacements. The growth in subscriptions has been astronomical.
\n
\n
\n
\n

Metric

\n

Q3 2019

\n

Q3 2020

\n

Q3 2021

\n

CAGR

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

Subscriptions

\n

305,000

\n

501,000

\n

1,340,000

\n

109%

\n
\n
\n
\n
Data source: GoPro. But with the broad S&P 500 index near all-time highs, the prospect of opening new positions can be daunting given that many popular stocks are looking quite expensive.\nIf you're willing to venture off the beaten path, some pockets of the market are still attractively priced, though.\nCohu (NASDAQ:COHU) is a semiconductor service company that Wall Street thinks could almost double from here, and action-camera company GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO) has just delivered consecutive blockbuster quarterly results, spurring an analyst upgrade from well-respected investment bank Morgan Stanley this week.\nThese two stocks are just getting warmed up, and here's why they could be big-time contributors to your portfolio next year.\nThe case for Cohu\nCohu supplies testing and handling equipment to the world's largest semiconductor producers, designed to speed up the manufacturing process of fragile and highly valuable computer chips.\nA crippling semiconductor shortage has raged throughout 2020 and 2021, triggered by pandemic-related production shutdowns across Asia. These advanced computer chips are critical to most digital consumer goods, from mobile devices all the way up to new cars, and the inability to access them has caused a price surge in many of these products.\nThe new vehicle market was arguably the most impacted sector, with some dealerships reporting an 80% decline in their inventories. As a result, the price of a new car is up almost 10% in the last 12 months, and the price of a used car is up a whopping 26% as consumers settle for pre-owned models instead.\nCohu is playing a crucial role in alleviating these issues by focusing on the automotive segment, which is now its largest, accounting for 18% of total revenue. Its Neon inspection system is designed to detect defects in some of the world's smallest automotive-related semiconductors while still handling them at high speeds to prevent manufacturing delays.\nThis equipment is in high demand from semiconductor producers who need to quickly expand capacity to clear backlogs, and as such, Cohu is having its most profitable year since 2017. It's set to grow revenue by 39% compared to 2020, with $3.01 in earnings per share.\nBased on its current share price of $36, it trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of just 12, about 65% cheaper than the broad iShares Semiconductor ETF, which trades at a multiple of 35. It's therefore within the realm of probability that the stock could double from here -- yet even if it did, it would still be cheaper than its peers in the industry.\nThe case for GoPro\nAction camera leader GoPro is a corporate comeback story for the ages. Its stock fell 97% between its public listing in 2014 and the 2020 pandemic, yet it has been resurrected by a strong performance from its management team. They've pivoted the company away from a one-dimensional revenue stream, and set up a booming subscription business with extremely high profit margins.\nGoPro's new HERO10 Black camera shoots video in 5.2K high definition at a price point of just $499 -- its most comparable competitor, according to the company, is priced at $3,500. Traditionally, GoPro has sold its cameras through some of the largest retailers in the world, but it's currently shifting to a more direct-to-consumer model using its GoPro.com website. It means higher gross margins for the company, as it now keeps the retailers' cut.\nBut perhaps more notably is the new GoPro.com subscription. For $49.99 per year, brand loyalists can access exclusive product discounts, unlimited cloud storage, live streaming, and damaged product replacements. The growth in subscriptions has been astronomical.\n\n\n\nMetric\nQ3 2019\nQ3 2020\nQ3 2021\nCAGR\n\n\n\n\nSubscriptions\n305,000\n501,000\n1,340,000\n109%\n\n\n\nData source: GoPro. The legendary investor routinely beat the S&P 500's performance throughout much of his career. So far this year, though, Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) gains are lagging behind the index.
\n
Many of the stocks in Berkshire's portfolio have generated strong year-to-date returns, but not all of them. Regardless of how they've performed recently, some Berkshire holdings remain especially attractive over the long term. Here are three Buffett stocks I'd buy in December without any reservations.
\n
\n
1. Amazon.com
E-commerce sales in the U.S. made up only 13% of total retail sales in the third quarter. Amazon still has a huge growth opportunity in this core market.
\n
But e-commerce is just one growth driver for the company. Amazon Web Services remains the biggest cloud hosting business in the world and continues to grow rapidly. The company's advertising business is picking up major momentum.
The 5G \"supercycle\" could keep going throughout 2022 and even beyond.
\n
Apple could enjoy even stronger growth going forward. The company could unveil its augmented reality (AR) headset next year, and it's working on AR glasses. The legendary investor routinely beat the S&P 500's performance throughout much of his career. So far this year, though, Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) gains are lagging behind the index.\nMany of the stocks in Berkshire's portfolio have generated strong year-to-date returns, but not all of them. Regardless of how they've performed recently, some Berkshire holdings remain especially attractive over the long term. Here are three Buffett stocks I'd buy in December without any reservations.\nImage source: The Motley Fool.\n1. Amazon.com\nAmazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) belongs in the group of Buffett's laggards. Shares of the internet giant have risen only around 8% this year, well behind Berkshire's overall performance. However, there are few stocks of large companies that have as clear of a growth runway as Amazon does.\nLet's start with the near term. Amazon expects record holiday sales in the fourth quarter of $135 billion. Twelve-digit quarterly revenue has become standard fare for the company. Amazon is investing heavily in adding capacity to support its fulfillment operations. That's an obvious sign that the company anticipates significant growth in the future.\nThis isn't a surprise. E-commerce sales in the U.S. made up only 13% of total retail sales in the third quarter. Amazon still has a huge growth opportunity in this core market.\nBut e-commerce is just one growth driver for the company. Amazon Web Services remains the biggest cloud hosting business in the world and continues to grow rapidly. The company's advertising business is picking up major momentum. Amazon's healthcare moves in online pharmacy and telehealth could also pay off nicely. I don't see this stock staying a laggard for very long.\n2. Apple\nNot all of the FAANG stocks are underperformers this year. Shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) have soared more than 20%. And that impressive gain came despite the company posting disappointing Q3 results.\nInvestors are focusing on the future with Apple -- just as they should be. The company continues to ride the wave of 5G adoption. Its iPhone sales seem likely to reach record levels this holiday season unless supply chain issues serve as a damper. The 5G \"supercycle\" could keep going throughout 2022 and even beyond.\nApple could enjoy even stronger growth going forward. The company could unveil its augmented reality (AR) headset next year, and it's working on AR glasses. Apple is also reportedly developing a self-driving electric car.\nBuffett likes Apple so much that it's the largest holding in Berkshire's portfolio. I fully expect that the stock will keep up its winning ways for years to come.\n3. Mastercard\nYou might be at least a little surprised that I've included Mastercard (NYSE:MA) on this list. After all, the stock has fallen more than 10% so far in 2021. But there's still a lot to like about Mastercard.\nThe company makes money from transaction fees every time one of its credit cards is used to make a purchase. With the rise of e-commerce and the shift away from cash with in-store purchases, Mastercard's credit cards will almost certainly be used a lot more in the future.\nAlthough Mastercard is already a global company, it still has plenty of growth opportunities in developing regions. For example, Mastercard's recent acquisition of fintech company Arcus FI should help boost its presence in the Latin American market.\nTwo potential growth drivers for Mastercard might not receive as much attention as they deserve. The company's \"buy now, pay later\" program is picking up momentum. Mastercard is also expanding its cryptocurrency support, partnering with three cryptocurrency providers in the Asia Pacific region to launch crypto-funded Mastercard payment cards.\nIt's possible that the emergence of the omicron variant could create some temporary headwinds for Mastercard if businesses experience disruptions. However, this Buffett stock should be a big winner over the long run.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":946,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":691907844,"gmtCreate":1640107487990,"gmtModify":1640107488064,"author":{"id":"3575838567180609","authorId":"3575838567180609","name":"Rvnxx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a743976b076f724cab568dc8fe8c8ae5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575838567180609","idStr":"3575838567180609"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$I just want to break even to sell","listText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$I just want to break even to sell","text":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$I just want to break even to sell","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eeea5d7c1f0c8d29570d51fd2a792c78","width":"1242","height":"1968"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/691907844","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":996,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":601024625,"gmtCreate":1638461165100,"gmtModify":1638461165173,"author":{"id":"3575838567180609","authorId":"3575838567180609","name":"Rvnxx","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a743976b076f724cab568dc8fe8c8ae5","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575838567180609","idStr":"3575838567180609"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Take note","listText":"Take note","text":"Take note","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/601024625","repostId":"2188049563","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2188049563","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1638415920,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2188049563?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-02 11:32","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Don't Own These 10 Stocks? That's after a 16% 2020 gain despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Gains this high are not normal, as the market tends to average around 8% a year over the long term.
\n
What's even more remarkable is that the 10 largest components of the S&P 500 are up -- wait for it -- an average of 50% year to date.
\n
Now if you're looking at your portfolio wondering why it's underperforming the market this year, you aren't alone. Beating the stock market in 2021 is nearly impossible without these 10 stocks. Here's why.
\n
Flexing their muscles
\n
The math here is beautifully simple. The 10 largest holdings of the S&P 500 make up 29% of the index. As mentioned, they are collectively up an average of 50% of the year, which contributes a gain of 13 percentage points to the S&P 500's return. That's around half of the index's gain from these 10 stocks alone. Finance, YCharts, Slickcharts
\n
Dissecting the S&P 500
\n
We talk about the S&P 500 all the time, but we don't always discuss what makes up the index and why it moves the way it does.
\n
\n\n\n\n
Don't Own These 10 Stocks? That's after a 16% 2020 gain despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Gains this high are not normal, as the market tends to average around 8% a year over the long term.\nWhat's even more remarkable is that the 10 largest components of the S&P 500 are up -- wait for it -- an average of 50% year to date.\nNow if you're looking at your portfolio wondering why it's underperforming the market this year, you aren't alone. Beating the stock market in 2021 is nearly impossible without these 10 stocks. Here's why.\nFlexing their muscles\nThe math here is beautifully simple. The 10 largest holdings of the S&P 500 make up 29% of the index. As mentioned, they are collectively up an average of 50% of the year, which contributes a gain of 13 percentage points to the S&P 500's return. That's around half of the index's gain from these 10 stocks alone. So, without their contribution, the index is up a whole lot less.\n\n\n\nCompany\nS&P 500 Weight\nYTD Gain\nEffect On S&P 500 YTD Return\n\n\n\n\nMicrosoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)\n6.4%\n54%\n3.47 percentage points\n\n\nApple (NASDAQ:AAPL)\n6.2%\n21%\n1.30 percentage points\n\n\nAmazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)\n4%\n13%\n0.52 percentage points\n\n\nAlphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG)\n2.3%\n70%\n1.58 percentage points\n\n\nTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)\n2.2%\n61%\n1.36 percentage points\n\n\nMeta Platforms (NASDAQ:FB)\n2%\n26%\n0.53 percentage points\n\n\nNvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA)\n2%\n153%\n3.03 percentage points\n\n\nBerkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B)\n1.3%\n21%\n0.27 percentage points\n\n\nJPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM)\n1.2%\n27%\n0.33 percentage points\n\n\nHome Depot (NYSE:HD)\n1.1%\n54%\n0.58 percentage points\n\n\n\nData sources: Yahoo! Finance, YCharts, Slickcharts\nDissecting the S&P 500\nWe talk about the S&P 500 all the time, but we don't always discuss what makes up the index and why it moves the way it does. It may surprise you to learn that technology stocks actually make up over a quarter of the whole index, and that's dominated by big companies like Apple and Microsoft. Similarly, the energy sector, which is actually the best-performing sector of 2021 (even better than tech) only makes up 3% of the index. So, the energy sector could double and it would contribute less than Microsoft stock's 3.47 percentage point contribution so far this year.\nMSFT data by YCharts\nWhat to do about it\nOne of the biggest mistakes we can make as investors is obsessing over short- to mid-term performance. Zooming in to a particular quarter undermines the big picture. For example, there are plenty of stocks that absolutely crushed the market in 2020 that are underperforming or even down big this year (think Zoom, PayPal, Square, Teladoc, and Peloton, to name a few).\nWhile it's easy to say that those companies are underperformers this year, keep in mind they are still net winners over the last two years.\nA note of reassurance\nLet's say that for a few years now, you've been underperforming the market because you haven't held the stocks that have really driven the index's returns. The truth of the matter is that you're still probably a lot better off because you were in the market in the first place. So if you're up, let's say, half of what the index is, you're still growing your wealth at a much quicker pace than folks who aren't in the market at all.\nThe most important priority is your financial goals. If you're investing in dividend stocks to supplement income in retirement, then you're playing a different game than growth-oriented investors. Similarly, if you're a value investor who focuses on stodgy, slow-growing, but safe companies that let you sleep at night, then it's simply expected that you're going to underperform a growth-driven market.\nFocus on what really matters\nThe point here is that comparing your performance to the S&P 500, for better or for worse, is usually unhelpful. As long as you're investing in companies, cryptos, or other securities that you understand and that are helping you reach your goals, then the rest is little more than bragging rights.\nThe market moves in cycles. And while we may be living in a multi-year period of growth (especially mega-cap tech growth), there could be a few years where it shifts from growth to value, or from large-cap tech growth to small-cap growth. Hopefully, you're left with a better understanding of what's really driving the S&P 500 and why it's so easy to underperform if you didn't own stocks like Microsoft, Nvidia, or Tesla this year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1290,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
