He’s a&nbsp;Tesla&nbsp;(ticker: TSLA) bear—rating shares Sell with a $300 price target—mainly because he believes the stock is pricey. Still, EVs can be worth half of the industry if investors buy into three ideas.</p>\n<p>Today, 16 EV makers—including Tesla and yet-to-be public Rivian—are worth a combined $1.14 trillion. Tesla accounts for 74% of total EV value. Four of the top 10 most valuable auto makers are EV companies including: Tesla, Rivian,BYD&nbsp;(1211.Hong Kong), and&nbsp;NIO&nbsp;(NIO).</p>\n<p>As for the makers of conventional vehicles, more than 50 auto makers are worth a combined $1.42 trillion. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor&nbsp;(TM),Volkswagen&nbsp;(VOW3.Germany),Daimler&nbsp;(DAI.Germany), and&nbsp;General Motors&nbsp;(GM).</p>\n<p>Sales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.</p>\n<p>“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.</p>\n<p>That’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.</p>\n<p>That’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.</p>\n<p>The final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.</p>\n<p>The mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”</p>\n<p>His views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”</p>\n<p>Time will tell who is right. Sacconaghi’s target price still implies Tesla should be the world’s most valuable car company, just not two to three times the value of Toyota.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock has been on a tear of late, adding 34% over the past three months as investors have become more bullish about third quarter earnings due out on Wednesday evening. Investor Vance Howard thinks he’s found it.</p>\n<p>Howard and his small army of computer programmers atHoward Capital Managementin Roswell, Ga., have a quantitative system that posts great returns.</p>\n<p>His HCM Tactical Growth Fund&nbsp;HCMGX,+0.35%beats its Russell 1000&nbsp;benchmark index and large-blend fund category by 8.5-10.4 percentage points annualized over the past five years, according to Morningstar. That is no small feat, and not only because it has to overcome a 2.22% fee. Beating the market is simply not easy. His HCM Dividend Sector PlusHCMQX,-0.05%) and HCM Income PlusHCMLX,+0.30%funds post similar outperformance.</p>\n<p>There are drawbacks, which I detail below. (Among them: Potentially long stretches of underperformance and regular tax bills.) But first, what can we learn from this winner?</p>\n<p>So-called quants never share all the details of their proprietary systems, but Howard shares a lot, as you’ll see. And this Texas rancher has a lot of good advice based on “horse sense” — not surprising, given his infectious passion for the markets, and his three decades of experience as a pro.</p>\n<p>Here are five lessons, 12 exchange traded funds (ETFs) and four stocks to consider, from a recent interview with him.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #1: Don’t be emotional</b></p>\n<p>It’s no surprise so many people do poorly in the market. Evolution has programmed us to fail. For survival, we’ve learned to run from things that frightens us. And crave more of things that are pleasurable — like sweets or fats to store calories ahead of what might be a long stretch without food. But in the market, acting on the emotions of fear and greed invariably make us do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sell at the bottom, buy at the top.</p>\n<p>Likewise, we’re programmed to believe being with the crowd brings safety. If you’re a zebra on the Savanna, you are more likely to get picked off by a predator if you go it alone. The problem here is being part of a crowd — and crowd psychology — dumb us down to a purely emotional level. This is why people in crowds do terrible things they would never do on their own. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. When you join a crowd, you lose a lot of IQ points. Base emotions take over.</p>\n<p>To do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #2: Have a system and stick to it</b></p>\n<p>To exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.</p>\n<p>The HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&amp;P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.</p>\n<p>When the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.</p>\n<p>“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”</p>\n<p>Right now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)</p>\n<p>Your system also has to tell you when to get back in.</p>\n<p>“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.</p>\n<p>You don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.</p>\n<p>“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”</p>\n<p>His system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.</p>\n<p>“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #3: Don’t fight the tape</b></p>\n<p>This concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”</p>\n<p>“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”</p>\n<p>In other words, don’t try to be a hero.</p>\n<p>“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.</p>\n<p>Likewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #4: Keep it simple</b></p>\n<p>As you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.</p>\n<p>“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”</p>\n<p><b>Lesson #5: How to trade the current market</b></p>\n<p>First, be long.</p>\n<p>“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. We are buying pullbacks.”</p>\n<p>One bullish signal is all the cash on the sidelines. “If there is any relief in Covid, we may see a big rally. We may end up with a great fall [season].”</p>\n<p>Howard uses momentum indicators to select stocks and ETFs, too. For sectors he favors the following.</p>\n<p>He likes health care, tradable through the iShares US HealthcareIYH,-0.04%and ProShares Ultra Health CareRXL,+0.12%ETFs. Investor Vance Howard thinks he’s found it.\nHoward and his small army of computer programmers atHoward Capital Managementin Roswell, Ga., have a quantitative system that posts great returns.\nHis HCM Tactical Growth Fund HCMGX,+0.35%beats its Russell 1000 benchmark index and large-blend fund category by 8.5-10.4 percentage points annualized over the past five years, according to Morningstar. That is no small feat, and not only because it has to overcome a 2.22% fee. Beating the market is simply not easy. His HCM Dividend Sector PlusHCMQX,-0.05%) and HCM Income PlusHCMLX,+0.30%funds post similar outperformance.\nThere are drawbacks, which I detail below. (Among them: Potentially long stretches of underperformance and regular tax bills.) But first, what can we learn from this winner?\nSo-called quants never share all the details of their proprietary systems, but Howard shares a lot, as you’ll see. And this Texas rancher has a lot of good advice based on “horse sense” — not surprising, given his infectious passion for the markets, and his three decades of experience as a pro.\nHere are five lessons, 12 exchange traded funds (ETFs) and four stocks to consider, from a recent interview with him.\nLesson #1: Don’t be emotional\nIt’s no surprise so many people do poorly in the market. Evolution has programmed us to fail. For survival, we’ve learned to run from things that frightens us. And crave more of things that are pleasurable — like sweets or fats to store calories ahead of what might be a long stretch without food. But in the market, acting on the emotions of fear and greed invariably make us do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sell at the bottom, buy at the top.\nLikewise, we’re programmed to believe being with the crowd brings safety. If you’re a zebra on the Savanna, you are more likely to get picked off by a predator if you go it alone. The problem here is being part of a crowd — and crowd psychology — dumb us down to a purely emotional level. This is why people in crowds do terrible things they would never do on their own. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. When you join a crowd, you lose a lot of IQ points. Base emotions take over.\nTo do well in the market, you have to counteract these tendencies. “One of the biggest mistakes individual investors and money managers make is getting emotional,” says Howard. “Let your emotions go.”\nLesson #2: Have a system and stick to it\nTo exorcise emotion, have a system. “And don’t second guess it,” says Howard. “This keeps you from letting the pandemic or Afghanistan scare you out of the market.” He calls his system the HCM-BuyLine. It is basically a momentum and trend-following system — which often works well in the markets.\nThe HCM-BuyLine basically works like this. First, rather than use the S&P 500SPX,-0.03%or the Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-0.21%,Howard blends several stock indices to create his own index. Then he uses a moving average that tells him whether the market is in an uptrend or downtrend.\nWhen the moving average drops 3.5%, he sells 35%. If it drops 6.5%, he sells another 35%. He rarely goes to 100% cash.\n“If the BuyLine is positive, we will stay long no matter what,” he says. “We take all the emotion out of the equation by letting the math decide.”\nRight now, it’s bullish. (More on this below.)\nYour system also has to tell you when to get back in.\n“That’s where most people screw up,” he says. “They get out of the market, and they don’t know when to get back in.” The HCM-BuyLine gives a buy signal when his custom index trades above its moving average for six consecutive sessions, and then goes on to trade above the high hit during those six days.\nYou don’t need a system that calls exact market tops or bottoms. Instead, the BuyLine keeps Howard out of down markets 85% of the time, and in for 85% of the good times.\n“If we can do that consistently, we have superior returns and a less stressful life,” he says. “Being all in during a bad tape is no fun.”\nHis system is slow to get him out of the market, but quick to get him back in. Not even a 10% correction will necessarily move him out. He’s often buying those pullbacks. Getting back in fast makes sense, because recoveries off bottoms tend to happen fast.\n“The HCM-BuyLine takes all the emotion out of the process,” says Howard.\nLesson #3: Don’t fight the tape\nThis concept is one of the core pieces of wisdom from Marty Zweig’s classic book, “Winning on Wall Street.”\n“You have to stay on the right side of market,” agrees Howard. “If you try to trade long in a bad market, it is painful.”\nIn other words, don’t try to be a hero.\n“Sometimes, not losing money is where you want to be,” he says.\nLikewise, don’t turn cautious just because the market hits new highs — like now. You should love new highs, because it is a sign of market strength that may likely endure.\nLesson #4: Keep it simple\nAs you’ll see below, Howard doesn’t use esoteric instruments such as derivatives, swaps or index options. He doesn’t even trade foreign stocks or currencies. This is refreshing for individual investors, because we have a harder time accessing those tools.\n“You don’t have to trade crazy stuff,” he says. “You can trade plain-vanilla ETFs and beat everybody out there.”\nLesson #5: How to trade the current market\nFirst, be long.\n“The HCM-BuyLine is very positive. We are 100% in,” says Howard. “The market is broadening out. It is getting pretty exciting. We do not see it turn around any time soon. Tesla’s&nbsp;board currently has nine members who are divided into three classes in staggered three-year terms.</p>\n<p>If the proposal is approved, however, the board will be divided into two classes with staggered two-year terms, with directors distributed as equally between the classes as possible, Tesla said in the&nbsp;filing.</p>\n<p>The board would be reduced to eight members, since Antonio Gracias, a venture capitalist who has served on the Tesla board since 2007, said in 2019 he’d not be seeking reelection when his term ends this year.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s board nominated current board members James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp&nbsp;founder Rupert Murdoch, and Kimbal Musk, Chief Executive Elon Musk’s brother, for re-election as class II directors, with terms expiring in 2024. If the term reduction is approved, then their terms would end in 2023, the company said.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s curtailing board member terms was a response to a shareholder proposal calling to elect each board member for one year.</p>\n<p>The two-year term, however, “strikes a suitable balance to the long-term interests of and nearer-term accountability to our stockholders at this time,” Tesla said.</p>\n<p>Tesla shares were flat in after-hours trading after ending the regular trading day down 0.7%. Tesla’s board currently has nine members who are divided into three classes in staggered three-year terms.\nIf the proposal is approved, however, the board will be divided into two classes with staggered two-year terms, with directors distributed as equally between the classes as possible, Tesla said in the filing.\nThe board would be reduced to eight members, since Antonio Gracias, a venture capitalist who has served on the Tesla board since 2007, said in 2019 he’d not be seeking reelection when his term ends this year.\nTesla’s board nominated current board members James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch, and Kimbal Musk, Chief Executive Elon Musk’s brother, for re-election as class II directors, with terms expiring in 2024. If the term reduction is approved, then their terms would end in 2023, the company said.\nTesla’s curtailing board member terms was a response to a shareholder proposal calling to elect each board member for one year.\nThe two-year term, however, “strikes a suitable balance to the long-term interests of and nearer-term accountability to our stockholders at this time,” Tesla said.\nTesla shares were flat in after-hours trading after ending the regular trading day down 0.7%. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor&nbsp;(TM),Volkswagen&nbsp;(VOW3.Germany),Daimler&nbsp;(DAI.Germany), and&nbsp;General Motors&nbsp;(GM).</p>\n<p>Sales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.</p>\n<p>“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.</p>\n<p>That’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.</p>\n<p>That’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.</p>\n<p>The final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.</p>\n<p>The mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”</p>\n<p>His views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”</p>\n<p>Time will tell who is right. But it isn't that simple.</p>\n<p>The bond market isn't. Bond traders are off as recommended by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, known as Sifma.</p>\n<p>Columbus Day and Veterans Day are the two federal holidays when fixed-income markets are closed due to the federal holiday.</p>\n<p>As per usual, the Intercontinental Exchange<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ICE\">$(ICE)$</a>-owned New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">$(NDAQ)$</a> will both be open regular hours. So, the Dow Jones Industrial Average , the S&amp;P 500 index and the Nasdaq Composite Index , to note the three main U.S. bourses, can figure out whether the weaker-than-expected jobs report released on Friday was bullish or bearish in the near term.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, benchmark bonds can take a breather after the 10-year Treasury note yield, 30-year Treasury bond and 2-year Treasury note touched their highest yields in months (since March of 2020 in the case of the shorter-date debt).</p>\n<p>Now back to Columbus Day and the curious case of mixed up market closures.</p>\n<p>Here's perhaps why it is closed and equities trade on.</p>\n<p>Begun back in 1792 and declared a federal day off in 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Columbus Day marks a state and federal holiday. Federal offices, including the U.S. Treasury Department, are closed. That means, Treasurys--a chunk of typical trading activity on regular days and a key benchmark--are also forced to take a holiday.</p>\n<p>Columbus Day isn't without its controversy as a holiday intended to celebrate Christopher Columbus for sailing the ocean blue in 1492. Firstly, not all states celebrate the Italian explorer's occasion on the same day. Tennessee tends to celebrate the holiday on Friday. Some states don't acknowledge the day at all, with Alaska, Vermont, Hawaii and South Dakota choosing not to observe it.</p>\n<p>Some regions choose to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, which honors Native Americans and challenges the concept that Columbus was the first to discover America. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.</p>\n<p>\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"</p>\n<p>Let's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c2da7d6438277757a73f9e626ebc6fc2\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo</h2>\n<p>Everyone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, <b>Wells Fargo</b> (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.</p>\n<p>This essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. Buffett first purchased shares in the large U.S. bank in 1989, and by 1994, he had acquired more than 13% of its outstanding shares. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, Buffett's stake, which had a rough original cost basis of just below $9 billion, was worth close to $20 billion. And at <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.</p>\n<p>But as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. It looks like Buffett ultimately ended up making much less on his Wells Fargo investment than he could have, considering he sold more than 323 million shares between the end of Q1 2020 and the end of Q1 2021. During that 12-month period, the bank's shares traded from a low of $21.45 to a high of $39.07. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.</p>\n<p>The stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.</p>\n<h2>2. Dumping <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SYF\">Synchrony Financial</a></h2>\n<p>Last quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company <b>Synchrony Financial&nbsp;</b>(NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.</p>\n<p>While I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, <b>JPMorgan Chase</b>, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, <b>Bank of America</b>.</p>\n<p>Considering that Buffett already has a huge position in <b>American <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXPR\">Express</a></b>, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.</p>\n<h2>3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again</h2>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of <b>U.S. Bancorp</b> (NYSE:USB) in the first quarter -- but it still owns nearly 129.7 million shares. The Oracle of Omaha has sold small quantities of shares of the Minnesota-based regional bank a few times over the last year, and it's a bit unclear why. It does appear that he has made U.S. Bancorp his regional bank pick, though. He sold off his other regional bank holdings, including his stakes in <b>PNC Financial Services Group</b>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>M&amp;T Bank</b>, in the fourth quarter of 2020.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>One possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.\n\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"\nLet's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo\nEveryone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.\nThis essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. Buffett first purchased shares in the large U.S. bank in 1989, and by 1994, he had acquired more than 13% of its outstanding shares. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, Buffett's stake, which had a rough original cost basis of just below $9 billion, was worth close to $20 billion. And at one point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.\nBut as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. It looks like Buffett ultimately ended up making much less on his Wells Fargo investment than he could have, considering he sold more than 323 million shares between the end of Q1 2020 and the end of Q1 2021. During that 12-month period, the bank's shares traded from a low of $21.45 to a high of $39.07. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.\nThe stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.\n2. Dumping Synchrony Financial\nLast quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.\nWhile I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, Bank of America.\nConsidering that Buffett already has a huge position in American Express, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.\n3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again\nBerkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) in the first quarter -- but it still owns nearly 129.7 million shares. The Oracle of Omaha has sold small quantities of shares of the Minnesota-based regional bank a few times over the last year, and it's a bit unclear why. It does appear that he has made U.S. Bancorp his regional bank pick, though. He sold off his other regional bank holdings, including his stakes in PNC Financial Services Group and M&T Bank, in the fourth quarter of 2020. \nOne possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. The annual event is typically a chance for the tech company to introduce changes to the software used everyday by millions of people.</p>\n<p>eyond new gadgets and the introduction of iOS 15, WWDC will also be an opportunity for Apple to address its developer community in the midst of two major recent spats with app makers — a contentious legal battle with Fortnite-maker Epic Games over its App Store fees and a feud with Facebook (FB) over Apple's new app-tracking privacy policy.</p>\n<p>This year, for the second time, Apple's WWDC will be held online, though there will still be plenty for developers to do virtually, including more than 200 sessions on how to build new apps and services.</p>\n<p>The event begins with a keynote at 1 p.m. ET on Monday, June 7. Here's what to expect based on the latest reports and rumors.</p>\n<p><b>New gadgets</b></p>\n<p>The most significant hardware announcement expected during WWDC is the introduction of a redesigned 16-inch MacBook Pro, and possibly a 14-inch version, too, Bloomberg has reported.</p>\n<p>The device — like other recent computer and iPad launches from the company — would likely be built with Apple's M1 chip, which it has said provides longer battery life and faster processing speeds, among other benefits. The new laptop could also bring back the popular MagSafe power connector, Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said in an email last week.</p>\n<p>Among other hardware updates, Apple could announce a new version of its AirPods, a breakout product for the company but one that is facing increasing competition from the likes of Google and others.</p>\n<p>\"I'm sure Apple is aware of that competition\" and has plans to counter it, said Mike Bailey, director of research at FBB Capital Partners.</p>\n<p>Finally, the iPad could get major new operating system updates, after Apple introduced a new iPad Pro with its M1 chip last fall.</p>\n<p>\"We expect to see the lines between the Mac and the iPad continue to blur with powerful demos of high-performance video editing software and more,\" Wood said.</p>\n<p><b>iMessage gets a social media makeover</b></p>\n<p>Based on the company's promotional materials for WWDC, a centerpiece of the event could be iMessage, the messaging service used by countless Apple device owners.</p>\n<p>The iPhone maker has been working to make iMessage more like a social media platform that competes with Facebook's WhatsApp. Bloomberg reported that iOS 15 iMessage updates will include new options for automatic replies, beyond the existing auto-reply for when users are driving.</p>\n<p>This could further inflame the tensions with Facebook that emerged over privacy.</p>\n<p><b>Focus on privacy</b></p>\n<p>Industry watchers expect Apple to double down on its privacy focus during WWDC this year.</p>\n<p>At last year's conference, Apple announced its iOS 14.5 update that now gives users the option to deny apps permission to track their activity, a move that has drawn the ire of Facebook, which uses this data to target ads.
