src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7febf6ed056b0e3bc038321cdaad9b1c\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"782\">Source: TradingView
\n
Alibaba’s stock price has endured a terrible 8 months ever since its Ant Financial IPO was pulled in early Nov 20, with the stock languishing in the doldrums 34% off its high. When considering the health of its long term uptrend, it’s clear that BABA has a relatively strong uptrend bias and has generally been well supported along its key 50W MA. The only other time in the last 4 years that it lost its key 50W MA support level was during the 2018 bear market where BABA dropped about 40%, but was still well supported above the important 200W MA, which we usually consider as the “last line of defense”. Right now BABA is somewhat facing a similar situation again: down 34%, lost the 50W MA, but looks to be well supported above the 200W MA. In addition to that, one interesting observation in price action analysis may lead price action traders/investors to be especially bullish: a potential double bottom formation. BABA's price is seemingly going through a double bottom like it did during the 2018 bear market before it rallied strongly thereafter. As a result, BABA’s current level may offer a possible technical buy entry point now.
\n
BABA's Fundamental Thesis: Rapidly Expanding Growth Drivers
\n
Annual GMV. Data source: Company filings
\n
Annual e-commerce revenue. Data source: Company filings
\n
BABA’s GMV grew from 1.68T yuan to 7.49T yuan in just a matter of 7 years, which represented a CAGR of 23.8%, a truly amazing growth rate. We also saw its GMV growth being converted into revenue growth as its China commerce revenue grew from 7.67B yuan to 473.68B yuan, at a CAGR of 51% over the last 10 years. While its international footprint remains considerably smaller, it still grew at a CAGR of 30.42% over the last 10 years, which was by no means slow.
\n
Even though China’s e-commerce market is expected to grow considerably slower at a CAGR of 12.4% over the next three years, from 13.8T yuan, equivalent to $2.16T in 2021 to 19.6T yuan, equivalent to $3.06T by 2024, the massive size of the market still offers tremendous upside potential for BABA and its closest competitors to grow into.
\n
E-commerce revenue in the U.S. Data source: Statista
\n
When we take things into clearer perspective by comparing China’s growth rate and size of its market to that of the U.S. e-commerce market, we could see the huge differences in their sizes and growth rates as the U.S. e-commerce market is only expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.67% from 2021 to 2025, which is significantly slower than China’s 12.4%. In addition, the U.S. market is also expected to reach about $563B in total revenue, which is 18% of what the China market is expected to be worth by then.
\n
Peers EBIT Margin and Projected EBIT Margin. Data source: S&P Capital IQ
\n
Even though Alibaba has been facing increased competitive pressures from its fast growing key competitors: JD.com(NASDAQ:JD)and Pinduoduo(NASDAQ:PDD), BABA has already been operating a much more profitable business (both EBIT and FCF), and is expected to continue delivering strong profitability moving forward, which should give the company tremendous flexibility to compete head on with JD and PDD in its quest to extend its leadership. Investors may observe that BABA’s EBIT margin was affected by the one-off administrative penalty of $2,782M that was reflected in its SG&A, and therefore skewed its EBIT margin to the downside.
\n
One important move was the company’s decision to further its investment in the Community Marketplace, which is PDD’s main e-commerce strategy that saw PDD gain a total of 823M AAC in its latest quarter as compared to BABA’s 891M AAC. PDD’s AAC growth is truly phenomenal considering it had only 100M AAC in Q2’C17 as compared to BABA’s 466M AAC in the same period.
\n
Therefore, the momentum of growth has surely swung over to the Community Marketplace segment and BABA would need to pull out its big guns (which it has) to compete for dominance with PDD and JD.
\n
Market size of community group buying in China. Data source: iiMedia Research
\n
Even though the expected total market size of 102B yuan by 2022 represented only about 21.5% of BABA’s FY 21 China commerce revenue, the expected rapid CAGR of 44.22% over 3 years from 2019 to 2022 cannot be missed by BABA. Although the market is still relatively small, BABA cannot allow the current leader in this market: PDD to so easily dominate and gobble up the early high growth rates at the ignorance of everyone else. Certainly BABA must compete and fight for its place in this segment and strive for early leadership to prevent PDD from extending its lead.
\n
PDD profitability metrics & revenue growth forecast. Data source: S&P Capital IQ
\n
We could observe from the above chart that PDD is expected to continue growing its revenue rapidly over the next few years, even though they are expected to normalize subsequently. More importantly, PDD is also expected to increasingly improve its EBIT and FCF profitability moving forward. This shows that the Community Marketplace segment is an highly important growth driver that BABA must use its strength to exploit in order to deny PDD’s claim to undisputed leadership so early on in the game.
\n
China public cloud spending. Data source: CAICT; Sina.com.cn
\n
BABA has a 40% share in China’s public cloud market, way ahead of its key competitors. However, it’s important to note that despite this leadership, BABA is still in heavy investment mode to continue growing its market share as China’s public cloud market is expected to grow from 26.48B yuan in 2017 to 230.74B yuan by 2023, which would represent a CAGR of 43.4%, an incredibly stellar growth rate. This is especially clear when we compare China’s growth rate to the worldwide growth rate (see below) as public cloud spending worldwide is expected to grow from $145B in 2017 to $397B by 2022, that would represent a CAGR of 22.3%.
\n
Worldwide public cloud spending. Source:CnTechPost; Gartner
\n
Therefore, I don’t find it surprising that Ali Cloud has continued to extend its lead over Alphabet’s(NASDAQ:GOOGL)(NASDAQ:GOOG)GCP with a market share of 9.5% in 2020. While AMZN remains the clear leader in the market, its market share has been coming down considerably as public cloud spending continues to expand, indicating that there is a huge potential for growth for multiple players to exist. With BABA’s leadership in the rapidly expanding Chinese market, I’m increasingly bullish on the future profit and FCF contribution from this segment to BABA’s performance over time. Although BABA’s cloud segment has not been EBIT profitable yet (FY 21 EBIT margin: -15%, FY 20 EBIT margin: -17.5%), it’s also useful to note that GCP has also not been profitable for Alphabet as well (FY 20 EBIT margin: -42.9%, FY 19 EBIT margin: -52%). As a result, BABA’s current level may offer a possible technical buy entry point now.\nBABA's Fundamental Thesis: Rapidly Expanding Growth Drivers\nAnnual GMV. Data source: Company filings\nAnnual e-commerce revenue. Data source: Company filings\nBABA’s GMV grew from 1.68T yuan to 7.49T yuan in just a matter of 7 years, which represented a CAGR of 23.8%, a truly amazing growth rate. We also saw its GMV growth being converted into revenue growth as its China commerce revenue grew from 7.67B yuan to 473.68B yuan, at a CAGR of 51% over the last 10 years. While its international footprint remains considerably smaller, it still grew at a CAGR of 30.42% over the last 10 years, which was by no means slow.\nEven though China’s e-commerce market is expected to grow considerably slower at a CAGR of 12.4% over the next three years, from 13.8T yuan, equivalent to $2.16T in 2021 to 19.6T yuan, equivalent to $3.06T by 2024, the massive size of the market still offers tremendous upside potential for BABA and its closest competitors to grow into.\nE-commerce revenue in the U.S. Data source: Statista\nWhen we take things into clearer perspective by comparing China’s growth rate and size of its market to that of the U.S. e-commerce market, we could see the huge differences in their sizes and growth rates as the U.S. e-commerce market is only expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.67% from 2021 to 2025, which is significantly slower than China’s 12.4%. In addition, the U.S. market is also expected to reach about $563B in total revenue, which is 18% of what the China market is expected to be worth by then.\nPeers EBIT Margin and Projected EBIT Margin. Data source: S&P Capital IQ\nEven though Alibaba has been facing increased competitive pressures from its fast growing key competitors: JD.com(NASDAQ:JD)and Pinduoduo(NASDAQ:PDD), BABA has already been operating a much more profitable business (both EBIT and FCF), and is expected to continue delivering strong profitability moving forward, which should give the company tremendous flexibility to compete head on with JD and PDD in its quest to extend its leadership. Investors may observe that BABA’s EBIT margin was affected by the one-off administrative penalty of $2,782M that was reflected in its SG&A, and therefore skewed its EBIT margin to the downside.\nOne important move was the company’s decision to further its investment in the Community Marketplace, which is PDD’s main e-commerce strategy that saw PDD gain a total of 823M AAC in its latest quarter as compared to BABA’s 891M AAC. PDD’s AAC growth is truly phenomenal considering it had only 100M AAC in Q2’C17 as compared to BABA’s 466M AAC in the same period.\nTherefore, the momentum of growth has surely swung over to the Community Marketplace segment and BABA would need to pull out its big guns (which it has) to compete for dominance with PDD and JD.\nMarket size of community group buying in China. Data source: iiMedia Research\nEven though the expected total market size of 102B yuan by 2022 represented only about 21.5% of BABA’s FY 21 China commerce revenue, the expected rapid CAGR of 44.22% over 3 years from 2019 to 2022 cannot be missed by BABA. Although the market is still relatively small, BABA cannot allow the current leader in this market: PDD to so easily dominate and gobble up the early high growth rates at the ignorance of everyone else. Certainly BABA must compete and fight for its place in this segment and strive for early leadership to prevent PDD from extending its lead.\nPDD profitability metrics & revenue growth forecast. Data source: S&P Capital IQ\nWe could observe from the above chart that PDD is expected to continue growing its revenue rapidly over the next few years, even though they are expected to normalize subsequently. More importantly, PDD is also expected to increasingly improve its EBIT and FCF profitability moving forward. This shows that the Community Marketplace segment is an highly important growth driver that BABA must use its strength to exploit in order to deny PDD’s claim to undisputed leadership so early on in the game.\nChina public cloud spending. Source:China Internet Watch; Canalys\nSize of China public cloud market. Data source: CAICT; Sina.com.cn\nBABA has a 40% share in China’s public cloud market, way ahead of its key competitors. This is especially clear when we compare China’s growth rate to the worldwide growth rate (see below) as public cloud spending worldwide is expected to grow from $145B in 2017 to $397B by 2022, that would represent a CAGR of 22.3%.\nWorldwide public cloud spending. Data source: Gartner\nWorldwide public cloud market share. Source:CnTechPost; Gartner\nTherefore, I don’t find it surprising that Ali Cloud has continued to extend its lead over Alphabet’s(NASDAQ:GOOGL)(NASDAQ:GOOG)GCP with a market share of 9.5% in 2020. Therefore, we need to give BABA some time to scale up its cloud services in APAC and in China where it is expected to have stronger leadership to allow it to grow faster and investors should expect this to be a highly profitable segment over time.\nBABA's Valuations Look Highly Compelling\nNTM TEV / EBIT 3Y range.\nEV / Fwd EBIT and EV / Fwd Rev trend. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.
\n
The reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.
\n
The government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.
\n
What should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.
\n
Rising yields
\n
Remember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452% moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.
\n
“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.
\n
That’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.
\n
Fed tapering
\n
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.
\n
“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.
\n
“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.
\n
He thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.
\n
As we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&P 500 SPX,+0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04% and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.
\n
How to prepare
\n
When considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.
\n
The consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.
\n
Yes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.
\n
“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”
\n
Looking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.
\n
Your five-point game plan
\n
1. Do not go to “defensives”
\n
When people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.
\n
“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.\nThe reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.\nThe government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.\nWhat should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.\nRising yields\nRemember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452% moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.\n“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.\nThat’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.\nFed tapering\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.\n“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.\n“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.\nHe thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.\nAs we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&P 500 SPX,+0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04% and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.\nHow to prepare\nWhen considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.\nThe consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.\nYes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.\n“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”\nLooking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.\nYour five-point game plan\n1. Do not go to “defensives”\nWhen people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.\n“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”\n2. Go with companies that benefit from growth\nSince rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. This means cyclicals like industrials, basic materials consumer names, small-caps and international stocks. “Slower growth consumer staples and utilities won’t keep up with growth areas of the market,” says Paulsen.\nI first suggested Lindblad Expeditions LIND,+0.17% and Cardlytics CDLX,+4.54% and in my stock letter, Brush Up on Stocks (the link to my site is in the bio, below) in September 2020 and November 2019. Plus, both are cyclical names. Cardlytics helps credit card companies understand customer buying patterns for marketing purposes. Lindblad offers specialized cruise adventures to exotic locales. Both benefit from economic growth that powers more consumer spending.\n3. Do not get out of stocks\nIf you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.\n“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”\nMarket timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.\n4. Do not own bonds\nBond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. So don’t own bonds, whose prices fall when yields rise — unless you simply plan to hold to maturity to collect the income.\n5. Go with financials\nStrong economies typically make the yield curve more upward sloping, meaning that long-term interest rates on 10-year Treasuries rise a lot faster than short-term interest rates. Since banks borrow at the short end and lend at the long end, steepening yield curves help them.\nThe strong economy will also help banks release reserves and lower provisions for loan losses, both of which can boost earnings, points out Yardeni. The movie theater company announced Thursday it will sell 11.5 million shares, after the stock closed at an all-time high of $62.55 on Wednesday. AMC Entertainment dropped by as much as 30% on Thursday morning and trading was halted briefly for volatility.\nThe Reddit target said recent volatility and the level of AMC’s stock “reflect market and trading dynamics unrelated to our underlying business,” according to a filing it made with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Yet, investors keep piling into the heavily-shorted name.\nIn the past few weeks, Bank of America has been identifying the potential up-and-coming WallStreetBets targets by analyzing for clients how many mentions each stock gets on Reddit, among other things like short interest – that is, the number of shares that have been sold short by investors.\nThe Wall Street firm gave clients an updated list of the top small- to mid-cap stocks to watch during the return of the meme stock craze. The listed names have the most mentions on Reddit and short interest above the 5% average for the S&P 500 in the past week.\nTake a look at the list here.\nSource: Bank of America\nAMC remains No. 1 on the meme stocks list. WallStreetBets mentions have continued to rise for the third week for the movie theater stock with more than 5,000 comments since Wednesday, May 26. Mentions are at their highest levels since February, in the aftermath of GameStop’s epic short squeeze.\nBank of America told clients AMC’s more than 2,000% rally in 2021 could start losing steam.\n“AMC exhibits all three signposts that its rally could be nearing an end (acceleration in price and stock volume, increase in volatility, and a turn lower in the call-to put volume ratio),” Bank of America equity and quant strategist Jill Carey Hall told clients in a note.\nGameStop is still the second most-mentioned stock on Reddit. However, online comments continue to tick down. The stock had more than 3,600 mentions two weeks ago and about 2,670 comments in the past week.\nGameStop and AMC still have 21% of their float shares sold short, according to Bank of America, compared with an average of 5% short interest in a typical U.S. stock.\nNew members on the list are online real estate marketplace Zillow Group and retailer Bed Bath and Beyond.\nZillow got 50 mentions and Bed Bath and Beyond got 24 mentions on Reddit in the past week. Plus, Zillow has 13% and Bed Bath & beyond has 32% of their float shares sold short, according to Bank of America.\n“Among those with high short interest, Zillow (Z) made our top 20 screen for the first time in our dataset since August. And Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) – one of January’s ‘up-crash’ stocks, made the top 20 for the first time since early Feb. and shares have begun to surge again this week,” said Hall.\nShares of Bed Bath & Beyond are up about 25% this week.\nCommercial spaceflight company Virgin Galactic is the third most-mentioned name on Reddit. The stock has 24% of its float shares sold short, according to Bank of America.\nBeyond Meat, whichBank of America flagged as a new stock to watch a week ago, saw mentions continue to rise and now ranks number four. Shares of Beyond Meat are up about 12% this quarter.\nOther names like Athene Holding,Plug Power,Antero Midstream,Academy Sports and Outdoors and Clean Energy Fuels appeared on the list.\nAmerican Airlines,Gladstone Commercial and Natus Medical also earned spots on Bank of America’s Reddit stock list.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1275,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":110962284,"gmtCreate":1622422183848,"gmtModify":1631883954632,"author":{"id":"3575030455297226","authorId":"3575030455297226","name":"yewteer","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e75199c5215db862977408ff4388866d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575030455297226","authorIdStr":"3575030455297226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"BEST is surging.","listText":"BEST is surging.","text":"BEST is surging.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/110962284","repostId":"2139235480","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":401,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":137215353,"gmtCreate":1622349790572,"gmtModify":1634102116778,"author":{"id":"3575030455297226","authorId":"3575030455297226","name":"yewteer","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e75199c5215db862977408ff4388866d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575030455297226","authorIdStr":"3575030455297226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hello SEC. As of May 27, UAL stock is up over 36.7% year-to-date (YTD). It’s also up 100% over the past year. This is despite the heavy dilution from a number of equity capital raises in the last 12 months.
\n
Source: travelview / Shutterstock.com
\n
I suspect that UAL stock is going to stay in a holding pattern for a while until real profits are forecast for the company. Right now, it’s hard to see when that will occur. This is based on its difficult comparisons with its pre-Covid 19 results.
\n
Nevertheless, although United burned cashat a rate of about $9 million per day, it reached positive daily cash flow in March. The airline now expects to continue to stay positive in terms of cash burn. This is a huge step forward.
\n
In fact, United now has liquidity of $21 billion, although this includes undrawn $7 billion in Cares Act lines of credit. A more realistic measure is its actual cash balance, which was $12.975 billion at the end of the quarter.
\n
Positive Outlook Going Forward
\n
United Airlinessays that it now up to 52%of its airline schedule compared to the pre-Covid period in 2019, as of May. I suspect that will increase over the summer months as well. Its capacity was down 54% from 2019 in Q1, but it now expects its capacity to be down just 45% in Q2.
\n
Financially, United now says its new goal (after having become cash-flow positive in March) is to return to profitability. It expects to achieve huge gains in adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in Q2. For example, its EBITDA margin was negative 60% in Q4. It now aims to achieve only negative 20% EBITDA margins in Q2.
\n
And then Gerald Laderman, the CFO, said this on the conference call:
\n
\n “… even if business and long haul international demand are down 70% we believe it’s very possible our adjusted EBIT that will be positive later this year.”\n
\n
EBIT is earnings before interest and taxes. This is a higher level of profitability than EBITDA and implies that EBITDA will also be profitable as well.
\n
So, United expects to be profitable by the end of the year. Therefore, on a run-rate basis, it might be able to make positive profits going forward throughout next year. Moreover, this will occur, according to the airline, even if its profitable international operations are still down 70%.
\n
The way this works is for airline prices to rise. That is how it will have higher revenue than Q1 with only slightly improved demand in Q2. That is the conclusion thatthe analyst atBarron’s magazinehadafter reviewing the Q1 numbers. So, if you are planning on booking a trip, better do it now rather than in the fall, when prices will undoubtedly be much higher.
\n
What to Do With UAL Stock
\n
Analysts are still slightly positive on UAL stock. It indicates that 21 analysts have a price target of $59.10, which is just slightly below today’s price.
\n
The point is that analysts want to see when the company is going to become profitable, despite the company’s projections as I mentioned above. Originally, the consensus was that automotive companies and electric vehicle stocks would struggle in unison during the pandemic, but that hasn’t been the case.
\n
In fact, according to the International Energy Agency, there was a slight increase in EV sales while global car sales contracted by roughly 14%. Policy support and continued reductions in battery costs as well as improvements in equipment were the main contributors to increased investor interest. Hence, electric vehicle stocks have continued to post incredible returns. But that has also led to bubble fears.
\n
Electric vehicle stocks recently sold off, which in many ways is clearing the frothiness out of the sector. However, despite the pullback, these names remain significantly overvalued compared to other areas in the market. For example, industry giant Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 14.02 times, which exceeds the sector average by nearly 933%.
\n
TSLA is not alone, though — several companies in its peer group have similar numbers. Therefore, it’s best to wait for the appropriate dips before investing in the most promising electric vehicle stocks. The list below covers seven of those best names which are operating in the market today.
\n
\n
Nio(NYSE:NIO)
\n
Fisker(NYSE:FSR)
\n
Blink Charging(NASDAQ:BLNK)
\n
Chargepoint(NYSE:CHPT)
\n
Xpeng(NYSE:XPEV)
\n
Li Auto(NASDAQ:LI)
\n
Arrival(NASDAQ:ARVL)
\n
\n
Nio (NIO)
\n
First up on this list of electric vehicle stocks, Chinese EV maker Nio is often dubbed “the Tesla of China.” The company has shown incredible progress since its founding, following in the footsteps of the American EV pioneer it is so often compared to. Recently, the company hit 100,000 deliveries, a feat that even Elon Musk applauded.
\n
Currently, NIO stock has an upsized market capitalization of more than $60 billion. However, as we have seen in the sector, investors are ready to pay for sustained growth. Nio has an upscale position in the EV market and makes luxury vehicles with a strong affinity for technology. Moreover, the company is well-capitalized to fund its growth efforts. As of December last year, it had a massive $6.5 billion in its cash till.
\n
Looking ahead, Nio plans to make its move into the luxury-sedan segment in order to expand its margins further and turn a profit. What’s encouraging, though, is that its gross margins and operating cash flows went positive in the past year, showing that profitability is in sight.
\n
Fisker (FSR)
\n
Fisker is one of the most intriguing names in the EV industry, with a seasoned veteran in the automotive sector at its helm: Henrik Fisker. The company has its all-electric SUV called the Ocean in development. Moreover, it has also entered into a partnership with the famous Taiwanese contracts manufacturer Foxconn for producing its EVs in 2023. Therefore, without making a single dime in revenues, FSR stock has become one of the top speculative electric vehicle stocks in the market.
\n
There are a few differentiating elements that make Fisker one of the more promising EV companies out there. Firstly, it operates an asset-light model that focuses primarily on its car design and technological abilities. Moreover, the Ocean has an attractive price point with an all-covering lease option. Finally, the company has struck a few pertinent contract, delivery and fleet management deals in Europe and North America in anticipation of the Ocean’s commercial release in 2022.
\n
It will be interesting to see how things progress, but FSR stock is looking highly attractive at this time.
\n
Blink Charging (BLNK)
\n
EV equipment charging provider Blink Charging has been one of the best-performing electric vehicle stocks in the market. As of today, BLNK stock is up a whopping 306% in the past six months. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, it has done exceptionally well to grow its revenues and asset base. With over 23,000 charging stations across North America, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, the company has cemented itself as an industry leader.
\n
Blink Charging recently reported fourth-quarter results. For Q4, revenues shot up roughly 250% on a year-over-year (YOY) basis. Moreover, it noted that its commercially deployed charging stations grew 51% YOY.
\n
Earnings performance for the full year was mighty impressive, considering the circumstances. And with the exponential growth in EVs over the next few decades or so, the need for additional charging equipment is evident. However, despite the massive growth runway ahead, BLNK stock is highly overvalued. Investors need to wait for a better entry point in this name.
\n
Chargepoint (CHPT)
\n
EV charging specialist Chargepoint recently completed its merger with shell company Switchback Energy Acquisition. Currently, Chargepoint has a dominating position in the EV charging realm with a huge market share of 73% in North America. Moreover, it plans to increase its revenues from $146.5 million last year to roughly $1 billion by 2024.
\n
CHPT stock took a hit when it announced its earnings results back in mid-March. Revenues came in slightly higher than estimates and only slightly up from 2019’s $144.5 million in revenue. However, gross margins improved to 22.6%, the brightest spot in the results. Moreover, its cash reserves increased significantly after the merger transaction.
\n
Chargepoint plans to use this cash as part of its efforts to expand its charging-station footprint. On top of that, the company’s investments in the fast-growing European market could give it an edge over other electric vehicle stocks.
\n
Xpeng (XPEV)
\n
Xpeng is among the three juggernauts of the EV space in China. It is arguably one of the fastest-growing companies in its sphere, with its YOY revenue growth at about 152%. Now, revenues are estimated to reach $2.21 billion in 2021 and $4.29 billion the following year. Moreover, Xpeng is currently building an impressive autonomous driving lidar systems in-house. As a consequence, XPEV stock is up a healthy 57% for the past six months.
\n
Xpeng’s delivery numbers for its most recent quarter were also very healthy, coming in at nearly 13,000 vehicles. Despite chip shortages, the company is on track to deliver some 57,500 units for the year. Xpeng has also done an incredible job in separating itself from other electric vehicle stocks in terms of technology; its flagship XPILOT software continues to be upgraded with better capabilities.
\n
So, with so many exciting developments in the pipeline, XPEV stock is a pick that can’t be missed on the dip.
\n
Li Auto (LI)
\n
The last Chinese EV maker on this list is Li Auto, a company that has in many ways played second fiddle to Xpeng and Nio in the domestic market. Moreover, its revenues have also increased substantially in the past few quarters. Originally, the consensus was that automotive companies and electric vehicle stocks would struggle in unison during the pandemic, but that hasn’t been the case.\nIn fact, according to the International Energy Agency, there was a slight increase in EV sales while global car sales contracted by roughly 14%. Policy support and continued reductions in battery costs as well as improvements in equipment were the main contributors to increased investor interest. Hence, electric vehicle stocks have continued to post incredible returns. But that has also led to bubble fears.\nElectric vehicle stocks recently sold off, which in many ways is clearing the frothiness out of the sector. However, despite the pullback, these names remain significantly overvalued compared to other areas in the market. For example, industry giant Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 14.02 times, which exceeds the sector average by nearly 933%.\nTSLA is not alone, though — several companies in its peer group have similar numbers. Therefore, it’s best to wait for the appropriate dips before investing in the most promising electric vehicle stocks. The list below covers seven of those best names which are operating in the market today.\n\nNio(NYSE:NIO)\nFisker(NYSE:FSR)\nBlink Charging(NASDAQ:BLNK)\nChargepoint(NYSE:CHPT)\nXpeng(NYSE:XPEV)\nLi Auto(NASDAQ:LI)\nArrival(NASDAQ:ARVL)\n\nNio (NIO)\nFirst up on this list of electric vehicle stocks, Chinese EV maker Nio is often dubbed “the Tesla of China.” The company has shown incredible progress since its founding, following in the footsteps of the American EV pioneer it is so often compared to. Recently, the company hit 100,000 deliveries, a feat that even Elon Musk applauded.\nCurrently, NIO stock has an upsized market capitalization of more than $60 billion. However, as we have seen in the sector, investors are ready to pay for sustained growth. Nio has an upscale position in the EV market and makes luxury vehicles with a strong affinity for technology. Moreover, the company is well-capitalized to fund its growth efforts. As of December last year, it had a massive $6.5 billion in its cash till.\nLooking ahead, Nio plans to make its move into the luxury-sedan segment in order to expand its margins further and turn a profit. What’s encouraging, though, is that its gross margins and operating cash flows went positive in the past year, showing that profitability is in sight.\nFisker (FSR)\nFisker is one of the most intriguing names in the EV industry, with a seasoned veteran in the automotive sector at its helm: Henrik Fisker. The company has its all-electric SUV called the Ocean in development. Moreover, it has also entered into a partnership with the famous Taiwanese contracts manufacturer Foxconn for producing its EVs in 2023. Therefore, without making a single dime in revenues, FSR stock has become one of the top speculative electric vehicle stocks in the market.\nThere are a few differentiating elements that make Fisker one of the more promising EV companies out there. Firstly, it operates an asset-light model that focuses primarily on its car design and technological abilities. Moreover, the Ocean has an attractive price point with an all-covering lease option. Finally, the company has struck a few pertinent contract, delivery and fleet management deals in Europe and North America in anticipation of the Ocean’s commercial release in 2022.\nIt will be interesting to see how things progress, but FSR stock is looking highly attractive at this time.\nBlink Charging (BLNK)\nEV equipment charging provider Blink Charging has been one of the best-performing electric vehicle stocks in the market. As of today, BLNK stock is up a whopping 306% in the past six months. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, it has done exceptionally well to grow its revenues and asset base. With over 23,000 charging stations across North America, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere, the company has cemented itself as an industry leader.\nBlink Charging recently reported fourth-quarter results. For Q4, revenues shot up roughly 250% on a year-over-year (YOY) basis. Moreover, it noted that its commercially deployed charging stations grew 51% YOY.\nEarnings performance for the full year was mighty impressive, considering the circumstances. And with the exponential growth in EVs over the next few decades or so, the need for additional charging equipment is evident. However, despite the massive growth runway ahead, BLNK stock is highly overvalued. Investors need to wait for a better entry point in this name.\nChargepoint (CHPT)\nEV charging specialist Chargepoint recently completed its merger with shell company Switchback Energy Acquisition. Currently, Chargepoint has a dominating position in the EV charging realm with a huge market share of 73% in North America. Moreover, it plans to increase its revenues from $146.5 million last year to roughly $1 billion by 2024.\nCHPT stock took a hit when it announced its earnings results back in mid-March. Revenues came in slightly higher than estimates and only slightly up from 2019’s $144.5 million in revenue. However, gross margins improved to 22.6%, the brightest spot in the results. Moreover, its cash reserves increased significantly after the merger transaction.\nChargepoint plans to use this cash as part of its efforts to expand its charging-station footprint. On top of that, the company’s investments in the fast-growing European market could give it an edge over other electric vehicle stocks.\nXpeng (XPEV)\nXpeng is among the three juggernauts of the EV space in China. As a consequence, XPEV stock is up a healthy 57% for the past six months.\nXpeng’s delivery numbers for its most recent quarter were also very healthy, coming in at nearly 13,000 vehicles. Despite chip shortages, the company is on track to deliver some 57,500 units for the year. Xpeng has also done an incredible job in separating itself from other electric vehicle stocks in terms of technology; its flagship XPILOT software continues to be upgraded with better capabilities.\nSo, with so many exciting developments in the pipeline, XPEV stock is a pick that can’t be missed on the dip.\nLi Auto (LI)\nThe last Chinese EV maker on this list is Li Auto, a company that has in many ways played second fiddle to Xpeng and Nio in the domestic market. However, with its remarkable discipline in costs and margins, along with some interesting features, Li could be the first to break into profitability among its peers. Moreover, its revenues have also increased substantially in the past few quarters. That’s a testament to its solid brand equity.\nThe company started off the year strong, with its January deliveries up more than 356% from the prior-year period. Li Auto’s total deliveries increased to 38,976. Looking ahead, Xpeng is also looking at a possible 70,000 deliveries this year, making for YOY growth of approximately 115% according to Seeking Alpha.\nThat’s not all, however. Additionally, Li Auto has been investing heavily in its autonomous technology. Its partnership with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) could also aid delivery growth. LI stock, however, is as overbought as its peers. That’s why it would be prudent to wait for a dip before investing in this one of the electric vehicle stocks.\nArrival (ARVL)\nUnited Kingdom-based EV startup Arrival has been getting a lot of traction this year among the electric vehicle stocks. The company specializes in EV bus and van production and recently completed its merger with blank-check company CIIG Merger.\nThis merger helped Arrival raise $660 million in proceeds. What’s more, although it has entered a crowded space, Arrival’s decentralized manufacturing model is also poised to give it greater flexibility and a quicker path toward commercial production. This makes the company disruptive.\nArrival expects to begin commercial production in the coming two years. However, one of its customers —United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) — has already ordered 10,000 of its EVs, which the company will produce through its “microfactories.”\nAll in all, ARVL stock could become a significant player in the EV space based on its current progression and unique production model. That makes this a name that EV investors should definitely consider.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":105,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":379480395,"gmtCreate":1618789653217,"gmtModify":1634290976150,"author":{"id":"3575030455297226","authorId":"3575030455297226","name":"yewteer","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e75199c5215db862977408ff4388866d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575030455297226","authorIdStr":"3575030455297226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Facebook is too high now.","listText":"Facebook is too high now.","text":"Facebook is too high now.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/379480395","repostId":"2128635768","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":204,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":352487637,"gmtCreate":1616994065229,"gmtModify":1631884063738,"author":{"id":"3575030455297226","authorId":"3575030455297226","name":"yewteer","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e75199c5215db862977408ff4388866d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575030455297226","authorIdStr":"3575030455297226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"each time Microsoft buys one app, that app Will suck.","listText":"each time Microsoft buys one app, that app Will suck.","text":"each time Microsoft buys one app, that app Will suck.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/352487637","repostId":"2123383102","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":497,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":387769349,"gmtCreate":1613787155381,"gmtModify":1634552235397,"author":{"id":"3575030455297226","authorId":"3575030455297226","name":"yewteer","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e75199c5215db862977408ff4388866d","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575030455297226","authorIdStr":"3575030455297226"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Pfizer(PFE)$pfizer just announced to double the vaccine production hours ago. Yet we’re rejoicing in the news from Schmidt Automotive Research that Tesla has lost market share in the world’s largest EV market, the European Union.
\n
We’re rejoicing because this is a clear sign of global interest in EVs. In the European Union, Tesla’s loss in market share derived partly from large incumbent automakers’ increasing vigor in making their own EVs more attractive, through both pricing and design diversity.
\n
Good for the planet
\n
A broader, deeper market for these fuel-efficient, pollution-free vehicles is good for the planet and will further reduce prices. EVs’ path to further improvement also makes complete sense. In reality, internal combustion engines (ICEs) are today’s horse-and-buggy: well understood, reliable, and with a great infrastructure, but ultimately unable to compete.
\n
At the rate at which battery prices (and, by extension, EV prices) are falling and adoption is increasing, all car makers will have commenced publicly phasing out ICEs. General Motors has already taken the plunge and will phase out combustion engines by 2035.
\n
We won’t be surprised if GM revises this schedule in about three years from now and declares that it will go all electric by 2028, and all of the other carmakers follow.
\n
The history of technology foretells the future of electric cars. The accelerometer, a system that measure how fast an object is accelerating or decelerating, exemplifies the process. In the 1950s, early accelerometers allowed ballistic missiles to maintain their trajectories. They cost many thousands of dollars. Today, accelerometer chips more sensitive than those that rode in missile cones cost a few dollars or less and are available on Alibaba.
\n
This occurred because when Apple’s iPhone made smart phones popular, a host of technologies became ubiquitous. Alphabet’s Android operating system and Linux-based systems-on-chips helped increase economies of scale, and the prices of all smartphone components fell dramatically, with broad ripple effects on many technologies.
\n
More importantly, entirely new categories piggybacked on smartphone technology. Drones are basically active mobile phones. They use much of the same computational technology, and their prices are similarly falling.
\n
And EVs are essentially mobile phones on wheels. They have many more moving parts and need additional features, such as lasers, rangefinders and airbags; nonetheless, they resemble mobile phones or drones more than they do ICE cars.
\n
Tesla has approached EVs as software products and upgradeable devices: more like iPhones than like traditional cars. And that makes sense. An EV is little more than a software-controlled engine with a battery in a box, and the batteries will soon become commodities.
\n
Battery-powered everything
\n
Eventually car bodies of all shapes and sizes will be 3D printed. EV entrants are already tackling all parts of the EV market, from tiny delivery robots and cargo drones to e-bikes and customized vans. All are flavors of battery-powered locomotion. And the cheapest will be widely affordable, which will democratize services as the $20 Jio smartphones in India have democratized online access. Already, e-bikes that manage 20 miles an hour in speed cost less than $500, and they suit many basic commuting tasks in urban areas.
\n
So Tesla, the EV leader, has nothing to worry about: Increasing awareness and fomenting innovation, it has made the addressable market much larger for itself. Like Apple’s, Tesla’s brand is powerful. Unlike Apple, Tesla faces some pretty cool competition, even now. Porsche has just announced an EV version of its Macan with pricing similar to the Tesla Model S sedans.
\n
Tesla CEO Elon Musk clearly recognizes and embraces a strategy of growing a much bigger pie. The market for EVs is far larger than a market for cars: precisely why he open-sourced Tesla’s patents and made it easier for rivals to scale up and build better cars and expand the market.
\n
Tesla will probably remain a small player in the global vehicle market by sales volume but stay on its cutting edge, just as Apple did in mobile phones. Steve Jobs positioned Apple firmly up market, and it has remained there, capturing the lion’s share of smartphone profits.
\n
So the best thing for Tesla — and the planet’s future — is a slow and steady loss of market share. The EV’s time has come, and that means it’s time for Tesla to face much stiffer competition.
","source":"market_watch","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The best thing for Tesla is a slow and steady loss of market share?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe best thing for Tesla is a slow and steady loss of market share?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-02-16 17:49 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
As rivals start to sell electric vehicles in earnest, the market will grow and highlight Tesla’s innovation prowess, protecting the planet in the process.\nWe love Tesla — we’re huge fans of the way ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"TSLA":"特斯拉"},"source_url":"https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-best-thing-for-tesla-is-a-slow-and-steady-loss-of-market-share-11613062433?mod=home-page","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/599a65733b8245fcf7868668ef9ad712","article_id":"1168749416","content_text":"As rivals start to sell electric vehicles in earnest, the market will grow and highlight Tesla’s innovation prowess, protecting the planet in the process.\nWe love Tesla — we’re huge fans of the way the company has made electric cars cool.\nThe Palo Alto, Calif.-based company’s Model 3 is probably the most appetizing lower-cost electric vehicle (EV) on the market today, and is well on its way to becoming a massive success.\nAnd Tesla’s rapid escalation in battery production has forced down prices of lithium-ion batteries. General Motors has already taken the plunge and will phase out combustion engines by 2035.\nWe won’t be surprised if GM revises this schedule in about three years from now and declares that it will go all electric by 2028, and all of the other carmakers follow.\nThe history of technology foretells the future of electric cars. The accelerometer, a system that measure how fast an object is accelerating or decelerating, exemplifies the process. In the 1950s, early accelerometers allowed ballistic missiles to maintain their trajectories. They cost many thousands of dollars. Today, accelerometer chips more sensitive than those that rode in missile cones cost a few dollars or less and are available on Alibaba.\nThis occurred because when Apple’s iPhone made smart phones popular, a host of technologies became ubiquitous. Alphabet’s Android operating system and Linux-based systems-on-chips helped increase economies of scale, and the prices of all smartphone components fell dramatically, with broad ripple effects on many technologies.\nMore importantly, entirely new categories piggybacked on smartphone technology. Drones are basically active mobile phones. They use much of the same computational technology, and their prices are similarly falling.\nAnd EVs are essentially mobile phones on wheels. They have many more moving parts and need additional features, such as lasers, rangefinders and airbags; nonetheless, they resemble mobile phones or drones more than they do ICE cars.\nTesla has approached EVs as software products and upgradeable devices: more like iPhones than like traditional cars. And that makes sense. An EV is little more than a software-controlled engine with a battery in a box, and the batteries will soon become commodities.\nBattery-powered everything\nEventually car bodies of all shapes and sizes will be 3D printed. EV entrants are already tackling all parts of the EV market, from tiny delivery robots and cargo drones to e-bikes and customized vans. All are flavors of battery-powered locomotion. And the cheapest will be widely affordable, which will democratize services as the $20 Jio smartphones in India have democratized online access. Already, e-bikes that manage 20 miles an hour in speed cost less than $500, and they suit many basic commuting tasks in urban areas.\nSo Tesla, the EV leader, has nothing to worry about: Increasing awareness and fomenting innovation, it has made the addressable market much larger for itself. Like Apple’s, Tesla’s brand is powerful. Unlike Apple, Tesla faces some pretty cool competition, even now. Porsche has just announced an EV version of its Macan with pricing similar to the Tesla Model S sedans.\nTesla CEO Elon Musk clearly recognizes and embraces a strategy of growing a much bigger pie. The market for EVs is far larger than a market for cars: precisely why he open-sourced Tesla’s patents and made it easier for rivals to scale up and build better cars and expand the market.\nTesla will probably remain a small player in the global vehicle market by sales volume but stay on its cutting edge, just as Apple did in mobile phones. Steve Jobs positioned Apple firmly up market, and it has remained there, capturing the lion’s share of smartphone profits.\nSo the best thing for Tesla — and the planet’s future — is a slow and steady loss of market share. The EV’s time has come, and that means it’s time for Tesla to face much stiffer competition.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":655,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
