After all, why earn nothing on your money when there’s Bitcoin and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and lumber and houses in Boise? Many days last year and early this year&nbsp;there were no takers.</p>\n<p>Starting in April, though, no interest started looking&nbsp;interesting to certain investors&nbsp;with too much cash on their hands. The amount of money they placed at the Fed overnight at 0.00% grew from nothing to single-digit millions to billions and, as of June 8, $497.4&nbsp;billion. That’s the most ever.</p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve Swallows Up Money</p>\n<p>Money market funds and others are depositing more funds overnight at the central bank</p>\n<p>Source: Federal Reserve Bank of New York</p>\n<p>Banks and money market mutual funds are unhappy with the situation and they’re&nbsp;pressing the Federal Reserve to do something about it. Others say there’s no rush to tinker. The Fed facility that’s taking in all that money is “doing what it’s designed to do,” Credit Suisse Group AG analyst Zoltan Pozsar wrote in a client note on June 4.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the numbers are likely to get even bigger, the Bank Policy Institute, a research and advocacy group, said&nbsp;on June 8. “We could see take-up nearing $1 trillion at the end of the second quarter of 2021, driven by the seasonal spikes,”wroteFrancisco Covas, its head of research.</p>\n<p>The quick explanation for this is that there’s a lot of money sloshing around the financial system, and for regulatory reasons banks don’t want to take it in as deposits. So money market mutual funds are absorbing the money. Each night they place some of their assets with the Fed and earn nothing, which is bad for their profitability. As for the Fed, the reason it even offers the facility is that otherwise the forces of supply and demand might push the federal funds rate below zero, which it has vowed not to let happen.</p>\n<p>The longer explanation gets at why this is suddenly happening now. As the Bank Policy Institute explains, the key reason is a rule change regarding bank capital requirements that took effect on April 1. It has to do with a clunky requirement called the supplementary leverage ratio, which is intended to prevent banks from taking on too much debt to acquire assets. The fear, of course, is that the assets will lose value and make the banks insolvent. The supplementary ratio, in its clunky way, treats all assets as equally risky, even though of course they aren’t:&nbsp;Treasury bonds and reserves at the Fed are extremely safe.</p>\n<p>When the Covid-19 crisis hit last year, regulators waived the rule, temporarily excluding banks’ holdings of Treasury bonds and reserves&nbsp;from the supplementary leverage ratio calculation. But the waiver ended on&nbsp;March 31 of this year, so banks once again have an incentive not to take in a lot of funds (such as deposits) to acquire a lot of assets (such as Treasuries and reserves). A related&nbsp;rule that’s getting the biggest banks to push away deposits is the capital surcharge for global systemically important banks.</p>\n<p>The Fed itself is increasing the pressure on the system by continuing to buy&nbsp;$120 billion a month of&nbsp;Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities to push down long-term interest rates. The money the Fed pays out, instead of going into bank deposits, is winding up in money market mutual funds, and then circulating into the Fed’s deposit facility, which consists of overnight reverse repurchase agreements.</p>\n<p>One problem with this situation is that the Fed is taking over what used to be a mostly private function. If money market funds get used to keeping a lot of their money at the Fed instead of investing in, say, the commercial paper of private companies, they may switch even more money to the Fed in some future crisis, depriving the private sector of&nbsp;needed funds. This isn’t just a theoretical concern—companies lost access to funding in the global financial crisis of 2007-09.</p>\n<p>The Bank Policy Institute quotes from a 2015&nbsp;Fed staffworking paper:</p>\n<p><i>“Most importantly, a permanently expanded role for the Federal Reserve in short-term funding markets could reshape the financial industry in ways that may be difficult to&nbsp;anticipate and that may prove to be&nbsp;undesirable. For example, a permanent or long-lasting&nbsp;facility that causes very significant crowding out of short-term financing could lead to&nbsp;atrophying of the private infrastructure that supports these markets. After all, why earn nothing on your money when there’s Bitcoin and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and lumber and houses in Boise? Many days last year and early this year there were no takers.\nStarting in April, though, no interest started looking interesting to certain investors with too much cash on their hands. The amount of money they placed at the Fed overnight at 0.00% grew from nothing to single-digit millions to billions and, as of June 8, $497.4 billion. That’s the most ever.\nThe Federal Reserve Swallows Up Money\nMoney market funds and others are depositing more funds overnight at the central bank\nSource: Federal Reserve Bank of New York\nBanks and money market mutual funds are unhappy with the situation and they’re pressing the Federal Reserve to do something about it. Others say there’s no rush to tinker. The Fed facility that’s taking in all that money is “doing what it’s designed to do,” Credit Suisse Group AG analyst Zoltan Pozsar wrote in a client note on June 4.\nMeanwhile, the numbers are likely to get even bigger, the Bank Policy Institute, a research and advocacy group, said on June 8. “We could see take-up nearing $1 trillion at the end of the second quarter of 2021, driven by the seasonal spikes,”wroteFrancisco Covas, its head of research.\nThe quick explanation for this is that there’s a lot of money sloshing around the financial system, and for regulatory reasons banks don’t want to take it in as deposits. So money market mutual funds are absorbing the money. Each night they place some of their assets with the Fed and earn nothing, which is bad for their profitability. As for the Fed, the reason it even offers the facility is that otherwise the forces of supply and demand might push the federal funds rate below zero, which it has vowed not to let happen.\nThe longer explanation gets at why this is suddenly happening now. As the Bank Policy Institute explains, the key reason is a rule change regarding bank capital requirements that took effect on April 1. It has to do with a clunky requirement called the supplementary leverage ratio, which is intended to prevent banks from taking on too much debt to acquire assets. The fear, of course, is that the assets will lose value and make the banks insolvent. The supplementary ratio, in its clunky way, treats all assets as equally risky, even though of course they aren’t: Treasury bonds and reserves at the Fed are extremely safe.\nWhen the Covid-19 crisis hit last year, regulators waived the rule, temporarily excluding banks’ holdings of Treasury bonds and reserves from the supplementary leverage ratio calculation. But the waiver ended on March 31 of this year, so banks once again have an incentive not to take in a lot of funds (such as deposits) to acquire a lot of assets (such as Treasuries and reserves). A related rule that’s getting the biggest banks to push away deposits is the capital surcharge for global systemically important banks.\nThe Fed itself is increasing the pressure on the system by continuing to buy $120 billion a month of Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities to push down long-term interest rates. The money the Fed pays out, instead of going into bank deposits, is winding up in money market mutual funds, and then circulating into the Fed’s deposit facility, which consists of overnight reverse repurchase agreements.\nOne problem with this situation is that the Fed is taking over what used to be a mostly private function. If money market funds get used to keeping a lot of their money at the Fed instead of investing in, say, the commercial paper of private companies, they may switch even more money to the Fed in some future crisis, depriving the private sector of needed funds. This isn’t just a theoretical concern—companies lost access to funding in the global financial crisis of 2007-09.\nThe Bank Policy Institute quotes from a 2015 Fed staffworking paper:\n“Most importantly, a permanently expanded role for the Federal Reserve in short-term funding markets could reshape the financial industry in ways that may be difficult to anticipate and that may prove to be undesirable. For example, a permanent or long-lasting facility that causes very significant crowding out of short-term financing could lead to atrophying of the private infrastructure that supports these markets. tg-height=\"877\"><span>Apple Inc. revealed Wednesday a study it commissioned from researchers detailing the scope of the App Store.</span></p>\n<p>Amid scrutiny from regulators and developers, Apple Inc. gave numbers on Wednesday that illustrate the immense size and scope of the App Store, but again avoided providing hard figures for revenue and profit from the online marketplace.</p>\n<p>The App Store ecosystem \"facilitated\" $643 billion in global billings and sales last year, up 24% from $519 billion in 2019, according to Analysis Group, a third-party research organization hired by Apple <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">$(AAPL)$</a> to conduct the 30-page report. The word \"profit\" does not appear in the report.</p>\n<p>The independent study, done with the cooperation of Apple in conjunction with the company's World Wide Developers Conference, or WWDC, next week, offered another snapshot of the economic behemoth whose revenue and profitability was a fiercely guarded secret during Apple's contentious antitrust case v. Epic Games Inc. The maker of Fortnite contends the 12-year-old App Store is a money-gouging monopoly that has enriched Apple with billions of dollars in profits at the expense of developers.</p>\n<p>Apple has never revealed revenue nor profit from the App Store, and figures it did provide an Epic expert witness were kept hidden from public view. The witness, Ned Barnes of the Berkeley Research Group, suggested that the App Store has profit margin approaching 80%, though Apple executives disputed that figure in testimony.</p>\n<p>Throughout the 3-week trial, Apple executives up to Chief Executive Tim Cook insisted they did not know if the App Store is profitable. Calculating P&amp;L, they said, was difficult because of the billions of dollars they spend on research and development, and the intricacies of the App Store's structure and payment systems.</p>\n<p>The Analysis Group study pointedly concluded that about 90% of the $643 billion in billings and sales world-wide occurred outside of the App Store, and Apple collected no commission on those sales. China led the way with $300 billion, most of that through sales of physical goods and services using mobile payments, followed by the U.S. ($175 billion), Europe ($74 billion), and the rest of the world ($94 billion).</p>\n<p>Specifically, billings and sales facilitated by the App Store ecosystem increased by 24% to $124 billion in 2020, the study found. While the digital goods and services category grew 41% to $86 billion during the pandemic, physical goods and services improved 24% to $511 billion. Travel and ride-hailing categories -- subsets of physical goods and services -- slumped a collective 30%. (Travel totaled $38 billion in 2020; ride-hailing was $26 billion.)</p>\n<p><b>Epic vs. Apple: The (predicted) verdict is in</b></p>\n<p>The researchers specifically stated that the closest figure they provided to App Store revenue -- the total amount of digital goods and services sold through apps -- was not actually analogous to that figure for Apple. The researchers included app revenue for services that were not purchased through the App Store but were used on Apple devices, and did not include enterprise-software revenue even if those apps were used on the devices.</p>\n<p>Throughout the report, Apple played up the importance of small businesses on the App Store, which constitute more than 90% of all developers on the App Store. It says the number of small developers swelled 40% between 2015 and 2020.</p>\n<p>Analysis Group highlighted the work of developers <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNAP\">Snap Inc</a>., media company Stitcher, and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BMBL\">Bumble Inc.</a> (BMBL), a dating app that is a rival of vocal Apple critic Match Group Inc. </p>\n<p>The success of small developers, most of whom pay from nothing to a 15% commission fee to distribute apps over the vast App Store platform, offer a contrast to larger developers such as Epic, Match, Microsoft Corp., Spotify Technology, and Nvidia Corp. who have complained about the store's 30% commission fees as well as restrictive technology requirements.</p>\n<p>The Analysis Group report adds another opaque layer to the mystery of just how much revenue, and profit, is generated by the App Store.</p>\n<p>Last year, Apple reported the earnings it paid to developers was about $39 billion world-wide in 2019, though it did not provide a similar figure for 2020. The word \"profit\" does not appear in the report.\nThe independent study, done with the cooperation of Apple in conjunction with the company's World Wide Developers Conference, or WWDC, next week, offered another snapshot of the economic behemoth whose revenue and profitability was a fiercely guarded secret during Apple's contentious antitrust case v. Epic Games Inc. The maker of Fortnite contends the 12-year-old App Store is a money-gouging monopoly that has enriched Apple with billions of dollars in profits at the expense of developers.\nApple has never revealed revenue nor profit from the App Store, and figures it did provide an Epic expert witness were kept hidden from public view. The witness, Ned Barnes of the Berkeley Research Group, suggested that the App Store has profit margin approaching 80%, though Apple executives disputed that figure in testimony.\nThroughout the 3-week trial, Apple executives up to Chief Executive Tim Cook insisted they did not know if the App Store is profitable. Calculating P&L, they said, was difficult because of the billions of dollars they spend on research and development, and the intricacies of the App Store's structure and payment systems.\nThe Analysis Group study pointedly concluded that about 90% of the $643 billion in billings and sales world-wide occurred outside of the App Store, and Apple collected no commission on those sales. China led the way with $300 billion, most of that through sales of physical goods and services using mobile payments, followed by the U.S. ($175 billion), Europe ($74 billion), and the rest of the world ($94 billion).\nSpecifically, billings and sales facilitated by the App Store ecosystem increased by 24% to $124 billion in 2020, the study found. The researchers included app revenue for services that were not purchased through the App Store but were used on Apple devices, and did not include enterprise-software revenue even if those apps were used on the devices.\nThroughout the report, Apple played up the importance of small businesses on the App Store, which constitute more than 90% of all developers on the App Store. It says the number of small developers swelled 40% between 2015 and 2020.\nAnalysis Group highlighted the work of developers Snap Inc., media company Stitcher, and Bumble Inc. Despite the quickest drawdown of at least 30% in the broad-based <b>S&amp;P 500</b>'s storied history last year, investors who trusted in their investment theses have been handsomely rewarded. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.</p>\n<p>While it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b2e6f5c48ac79126a7c69a95b9659ed\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"484\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>AMC Entertainment</h2>\n<p>There's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain <b>AMC Entertainment</b> (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.</p>\n<p>As most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a></b>, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.</p>\n<p>While I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.</p>\n<p>The AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.</p>\n<p>Suffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b574bce2f4c87731881bf278bde1070\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Marathon Digital Holdings</h2>\n<p>June would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner <b>Marathon Digital Holdings</b> (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.</p>\n<p>As I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. It's not even clear if Marathon's mining operations would be sustainable if Bitcoin, once again, declines by more than 80% from its high of nearly $65,000.</p>\n<p>The other issue is that Marathon purchased $150 million in Bitcoin earlier this year. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.</p>\n<p>I've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/084d89ada48e3614d1b0f7ca9fd0aa9c\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Sundial Growers</h2>\n<p>Following its late-May rally, <b>Sundial Growers</b> (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.</p>\n<p>While marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.</p>\n<p>In an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.</p>\n<p>With 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter <b>Aurora Cannabis</b>&nbsp;and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.</p>\n<p>As the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. It's not where you want to put your money to work in the high-growth cannabis space.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d8206c20bde46bd072cf7ee8a50b2c5\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"463\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Castor Maritime</h2>\n<p>As a general rule, penny stocks are penny stocks for a good reason. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up <b>Castor Maritime </b>(NASDAQ:CTRM).</p>\n<p>On paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?</p>\n<p>The problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).</p>\n<p>However, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the <b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.</p>\n<p>We've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. Castor is no different, which is why it should be avoided.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F629029%2Ffather-son-video-game-controller-console-gamestop-getty.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>GameStop</h2>\n<p>Since we began with a Reddit pump-and-dump stock (AMC), it's only fitting that we end with another hype-driven Reddit stock: video game and accessories retailer <b>GameStop</b> (NYSE:GME).</p>\n<p>Retail traders have flocked to GameStop for the exact same reason as AMC. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.</p>\n<p>To be clear, GameStop is a much, <i>much</i> better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.</p>\n<p>Where GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Even with e-commerce sales up 191% last year, GameStop's total sales declined by more than 21%. In short, sales will be stagnant for years as the company shutters physical locations and invests in digital initiatives. Over the trailing year, 910 stocks with a market cap of at least $300 million have doubled in value, with 62 of those stocks up by more than 500%.\nWhile it's great to see the U.S. economy getting back on track, some of the most popular stocks investors are buying are downright awful businesses. Even with things looking up for the market as a whole, the following five ultra-popular stocks should be avoided like the plague in June.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nAMC Entertainment\nThere's absolutely no question that the No. 1 stock to avoid like the plague in June is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC). It's far and away the most disassociated stock from its underlying business.\nAs most folks probably know by now, retail traders from Reddit, Twitter, and other social media platforms have banded together to buy shares and call options in AMC, which is a fairly heavily short-sold stock. Their goal being to effect a short squeeze -- i.e., an event where pessimists (short-sellers) feel trapped in their positions and run for the exit at once. Short squeezes are very short-term events and they have a very poor track record of success.\nWhile I have a laundry list of issues with the basis for this trade, perhaps the single biggest is that retail traders are willingly ignoring AMC's dumpster fire of an income statement and balance sheet. This is a company that almost certainly won't be capable of paying back its debts when they come due by or before 2026. It's also now been hamstrung by the same retail investors who claimed to want to \"save AMC.\" That's because AMC has maxed out how many shares it's authorized to issue, and can therefore not take advantage of higher prices with a capital raise. The May proxy vote would have allowed AMC to take advantage of this recent spike, but shortsightedness from retail traders killed that idea.\nThe AMC bull thesis is also built on a monument of misinformation. For example, retail traders believe hedge funds can bankrupt companies, when it's the operating performance and actions of businesses that determine whether or not they succeed or fail.\nSuffice it to say, the willful ignorance of concrete data in AMC's income statements and balance sheets will come back to haunt these traders.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nMarathon Digital Holdings\nJune would also be a very good time to say goodbye to a number Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stocks. Cryptocurrency miner Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) may well top that list.\nAs I've been previously stated, I'm not a fan of Bitcoin. Although it's the largest digital currency in the world by market value, it's been stuck at handling a meager 300,000 transactions daily for more than a year and is accepted by approximately 15,200 businesses worldwide. That's nothing when you consider that there an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs around the globe.\nBitcoin is also prone to long-winded downtrends. Over the past decade, the top cryptocurrency has lost at least 80% of its value on three separate occasions. That's bad news for Marathon for two key reasons. First, Marathon Digital mines Bitcoin, and is therefore reliant on higher prices to increase its revenue. It's not even clear if Marathon's mining operations would be sustainable if Bitcoin, once again, declines by more than 80% from its high of nearly $65,000.\nThe other issue is that Marathon purchased $150 million in Bitcoin earlier this year. While still up slightly on its investment, a protracted move lower in Bitcoin threatens to wipe out a good chunk of Marathon Digital's assets.\nI've said it before and I'll say it again: Crypto mining stocks are the worst way to invest in Bitcoin.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSundial Growers\nFollowing its late-May rally, Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL) has once more emerged as the top marijuana stock to avoid, as well as one of the worst stocks to buy, as a whole.\nWhile marijuana is an intriguing place to put your money to work over the next five to 10 years, Canadian pot stock Sundial has consistently underperformed its peers and done nothing to build shareholder value.\nIn an effort to rid its balance sheet of debt, the company's management team began selling stock in October 2020... and it just hasn't stopped. Sundial has built up a cash hoard of 1.08 billion Canadian (about $894 million U.S.), but has done so by issuing more than 1.35 billion shares of stock in eight months. As of May 7, the company had 1.86 billion shares outstanding -- and this figure is likely to go higher with an $800 million at-the-market share offering approved earlier this year. Sundial is building up cash with no particular purpose in mind and drowning its shareholders in the process.\nWith 1.86 billion shares outstanding, Sundial has virtually no chance of ever producing meaningful earnings per share, and it may not be able to get back above $1 per share on a consistent basis. It'll likely have to follow in the footsteps of serial diluter Aurora Cannabis and reverse split to get its share price to a respectable level.\nAs the icing on the cake, legal pot sales in Canada have grown significantly, while Sundial's marijuana sales have been slashed by a double-digit percentage. It's not where you want to put your money to work in the high-growth cannabis space.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nCastor Maritime\nAs a general rule, penny stocks are penny stocks for a good reason. A company that consistently has a very low share price probably has an untested operating model, is losing money, and isn't creating value for its shareholders. This pretty much sums up Castor Maritime (NASDAQ:CTRM).\nOn paper, the operating model doesn't sound awful. Castor buys vessels capable of transporting dry bulk goods, such as grains, fertilizer, sugar, and steel. If the U.S. and global economy are rebounding from their pandemic lows, demand for dry bulk goods and daily charter rates should increase over time. Pretty straightforward, right?\nThe problem is that Castor Maritime didn't have the fleet or the finances to take advantage of this rebound. To compensate, it's been selling shares of its stock like it's going out of style to raise capital to buy new vessels. Castor ended 2020 with six ships but it now owns 26, when all are fully delivered. But it's the company's shareholders who paid the price for this shopping spree. Castor's share count has risen from 3.3 million shares on Dec. 31, 2019 to about 900 million (both figures are pre-split).\nHowever, last month the company had to enact a 1-for-10 reverse split to simply remain listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Issuing so many shares pushed Castor's share price below $0.40, and a $1 minimum share price is required for continued listing.\nWe've witnessed this same dilute and reverse-split story time and again in the shipping space. Castor is no different, which is why it should be avoided.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGameStop\nSince we began with a Reddit pump-and-dump stock (AMC), it's only fitting that we end with another hype-driven Reddit stock: video game and accessories retailer GameStop (NYSE:GME).\nRetail traders have flocked to GameStop for the exact same reason as AMC. GameStop had a larger percentage of its float held short than any other publicly traded company in January. This made it the ideal candidate for a short squeeze. Unfortunately, it's also spurred retail investors to now hone in on short interest data and absolutely nothing else about the companies they're buying.\nTo be clear, GameStop is a much, much better and more financially sound company than AMC. A recent share offering helped raise $551 million in gross proceeds, which means GameStop has wiped out its debt and has more than enough cash to move forward with its digital transformation. In fact, all of these avoidable stocks are likely OK on the liquidity front for the next three to five years... except AMC.\nWhere GameStop gets into trouble is if you dig into its operating performance. It's always been a brick-and-mortar-focused company. This worked well for two decades, but is problematic now that gaming has gone digital. Even with e-commerce sales up 191% last year, GameStop's total sales declined by more than 21%. In short, sales will be stagnant for years as the company shutters physical locations and invests in digital initiatives. To get there, the stock needs to rise to $264.55.</p><p>The shares have gained 18% year to date.</p><p>Analysts expect another strong quarter from the company’s Azure and Office 365 cloud businesses, and will be looking for signs of accelerating growth in its enterprise operation. Sales of Surface hardware—laptops and whiteboards—were likely strong in the quarter, given the huge recent growth in PC purchases, although there is some potential that shortages of components resulted in unfilled demand. Strength in the PC market also bodes well for sales of the Windows operating system.&nbsp;</p><p>Microsoft breaks down its results into&nbsp;three segments: Productivity and Business Processes, which includes Office 365, Dynamics, and LinkedIn; Intelligence Cloud, which includes Azure and enterprise server software; and More Personal Computing, which includes Windows, Xbox, Surface hardware, and Bing.</p><p>When Microsoft reported its results for its fiscal second quarter in late January,CFO Amy Hood provided revenue guidance for each segment. For Productivity and Business Processes, she projected revenue of $13.35 billion to $13.6 billion. The call for Intelligent Cloud was for revenue of $14.7 billion to $14.95 billion, while she predicted $12.3 billion to $12.7 billion for More Personal Computing. If revenue for each segment came in at the top of its forecast range, the total would be $41.25 billion.</p><p>In research notes, several analysts cited positive comments from customers and resellers in projecting strong results.</p><p>Last week, KeyBanc Capital’s Michael Turits repeated his Overweight rating on the stock while lifting his target for the price to $295, from $280. He says the company is likely benefiting from a combination of strong IT demand and continuing strength in PC shipments.</p><p>“We continue to see Microsoft’s combination of expanding Azure scope, broad enterprise application innovation, and aggressive bundling seeing success in the market,” he wrote. “Nearly all North American Microsoft distributors/resellers we spoke with reported Microsoft channel revenue on or above plan.”</p><p>J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Murphy came away from his own new survey of resellers of Microsoft products encouraged about the outlook. He says those companies’ quarterly sales of Microsoft goods came in an average of 3.3% above their expectations, driven by improving enterprise demand. He reported strength across the company’s enterprise product lines, with growth in Azure, Teams, Office 365, and security products, among other places. To get there, the stock needs to rise to $264.55.The shares have gained 18% year to date.Analysts expect another strong quarter from the company’s Azure and Office 365 cloud businesses, and will be looking for signs of accelerating growth in its enterprise operation. Sales of Surface hardware—laptops and whiteboards—were likely strong in the quarter, given the huge recent growth in PC purchases, although there is some potential that shortages of components resulted in unfilled demand. Strength in the PC market also bodes well for sales of the Windows operating system. Microsoft breaks down its results into three segments: Productivity and Business Processes, which includes Office 365, Dynamics, and LinkedIn; Intelligence Cloud, which includes Azure and enterprise server software; and More Personal Computing, which includes Windows, Xbox, Surface hardware, and Bing.When Microsoft reported its results for its fiscal second quarter in late January,CFO Amy Hood provided revenue guidance for each segment.
