Amazon has told investors to expect revenue of $100 billion to $106 billion, with operating income of between $3 billion and $6.5 billion, and about $2 billion in costs related to Covid-19. The Wall Street consensus calls for revenue of $104.5 billion, with profits of $9.54 a share.</p>\n<p>The Street also clearly expects the quarter’s results to show continued strength in e-commerce. According to FactSet, Wall Street analysts expect online-stores revenue of $51.5 billion, up 41% from a year ago, with third-party sales of $21.7 billion, up 50%. Subscription revenues are expected to be $7.3 billion, up 32%, while revenue from physical stores is expected to be $4.3 billion, down 8%. AWS revenues are projected at $13.2 billion, up 29%.</p>\n<p>One open question is what forecasts the company will make for the June quarter as parts of the country begin to return to more normal economic activity. The Street is projecting June quarter revenue of $108.7 billion and profits of $10.81 a share.</p>\n<p>In an earnings preview note, Truist analyst Youssef Squali&nbsp;reiterated a Buy rating on the stock and a target of $3,750 for the share price. The stock closed Tuesday at $3,417.43, up 4.9% year to date.</p>\n<p>He expects revenue to come in at the high end of the range Amazon predicted, saying e-commerce demand has remained strong both in the U.S. and internationally, given that the pandemic has been slow to subside. Conversations with people in the industry and strong earning disclosed last week by Snap bode well for Amazon’s ad business, which is lumped into a category called “other,” he wrote. He also thinks the market continues to underestimate the long-term growth potential of the dominance of the company’s two key businesses—e-commerce and AWS—as well as the company’s “emerging leadership in online advertising.”</p>\n<p>Stifel analyst Scott Devitt&nbsp;is similarly bullish, repeating a Buy rating and $4,000 target price. He sees 40% top-line growth, a little ahead of the Street consensus. “The focus on the report will largely center on the outlook as Amazon laps the difficult prior year compares from the onset of the pandemic,” he wrote in a research note.</p>\n<p>“Growth in a post-Covid environment remains largely uncertain for Amazon and across the e-commerce landscape,” Devitt said. “Our [June quarter] revenue estimates are ahead of consensus as we see tailwinds stemming from strong growth in new Prime members and diversification across geographies and categories supporting the retail business as economies recover.” He also said AWS and the ad business are well positioned for a recovery.</p>\n<p>Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter likewise maintained an Outperform rating and $4,000 target. To get there, the stock needs to rise to $264.55.The shares have gained 18% year to date.Analysts expect another strong quarter from the company’s Azure and Office 365 cloud businesses, and will be looking for signs of accelerating growth in its enterprise operation. Sales of Surface hardware—laptops and whiteboards—were likely strong in the quarter, given the huge recent growth in PC purchases, although there is some potential that shortages of components resulted in unfilled demand. That bumped the capital gains rate up to 28% for rich households.</p>\n<p>In the lead up to the changes during tax year 1986, there was a 60% rise in sales on all sorts of capital assets, according to researchers at the nonpartisan U.S. Congress committee Joint Committee on Taxation, and the Tax Policy Center, a think tank.</p>\n<p>Ahead of a 2013 change — which brought the long-term capital gains rate from 15% to 20% and tacked on the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax — there was a 40% rise in capital gains “realizations,”the researchers said, meaning investors were selling their holdings.</p>\n<p>History could repeat itself, one of the authors told MarketWatch.</p>\n<p>“Certainly, one would expect people to start selling off,” said Robert McClelland, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center. “How much, I don’t know.”</p>\n<p>But McClelland noted it’s important to remember that many stock market buyers are foreign investors and retirement accounts, including 401(k) plans or pension plans, rather than individual investors operating through a brokerage account.</p>\n<p>Foreign investors own about 40% of stock market equity and retirement accounts own about 30%, according toestimateslast year from McClelland’s Tax Policy Center colleagues. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening.It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon.As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions.At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton.The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched.So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher.There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported.The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk.The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield,which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday.The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen.So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. gains tax rates increase.</p>\n<p>Alex Zagorski will be on the lookout for stock market bargains if President Joe Biden goes through with a reported plan to effectively double the capital gains tax rate on people who earn at least $1 million a year.</p>\n<p>Biden is reportedly planning tofollow through on a campaign pledgeto apply a 39.6% capital gains rate for millionaires and above. Coupled with a pre-existing 3.8% tax linked to the Affordable Care Act, that would be 43.4% rate. The capital gains rate on profits from investment securities is currently 20% for top earners.</p>\n<p>If history is any guide — and if Biden can even get the idea through Congress — there’s going to be a stock market sell-off in some form as some rich investors take advantage of lower rates before they climb.</p>\n<p>And Zagorski, a 27-year-old mechanical engineer from Detroit, Mich. with years of investing experience, will be there waiting. “My opinion on investing is very long-term,” he told MarketWatch. “I look at something like this as an opportunity to buy and hold.”</p>\n<p>Martin Sanchez, another relatively new investor, who started buying individual stocks in 2018, agrees. “I think there’s a buying opportunity for millennials if we do see a huge sell-off,” said the 27-year-old Winston Salem, N.C. resident, who works in the tech sector.</p>\n<p>If Sanchez sees the opening, he might buy up some shares in companies that focus on web security, giving him a chance to spread out his holdings, which are heavier in stocks like DisneyDIS,0.38%and TeslaDIS,0.38%.Sanchez is watching Biden’s tax proposals closely.</p>\n<p>There are a lot of open questions about the possible capital gains rate hike. Will Biden include the idea in the “American Families Plan” that he’s expected to unveil on Wednesday? How many other tax hikes targeting rich household will that plan include? Will it pass Congress?</p>\n<p>But another question is: What does this potential tax increase mean for a new generation of retail investors?</p>\n<p>By now, newer investors have gone through the 2020 market’s fall and rise, and weathered the meme stock trading frenzy that put companies like GameStopGME,3.18%on a share price rollercoaster. Do they stand to gain from an estimated$178 billionin selling that could occur prior to the rate increase?</p>\n<p>“There are some who may view it as, ‘Oh, here’s my opportunity to get on board,’” said James Angel, a professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.</p>\n<p>But like so much else based on the potential rate hikes, there are big open questions on how new investors — and investors in general — will react. “Does it create opportunity? Fund sponsors are also angling to launch a U.S.-listed exchange-traded fund (catching up to Canada, where&nbsp;Bitcoin ETFs recently started trading).</p>\n<p>U.S. fund sponsors filing for approvals recently include Fidelity Investments, VanEck,WisdomTree Investments(WETF), SkyBridge Capital, Valkyrie Digital Assets, and NYDIG Asset Management, according to Piper Sandler.</p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission has so far declined to approve a Bitcoin ETF, citing concerns about volatility, price transparency, and market manipulation. However, the Biden Administration’s nominee for SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, may take a friendlier approach. Gensler previously ran the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and has studied cryptos extensively. “This is good news for the digital assets industry,” wrote Jeff Bandman, a former CFTC official in aposton CoinDesk.</p>\n<p>As Bitcoin becomes entrenched, it may only get harder for regulators to restrain. Its growing acceptance as an alternative investment or transaction currency is far outpacing regulatory controls. That, in turn, could improve the investment case for owning it, according to Piper Sandler.</p>\n<p>“Many investors view this scale as a safeguard against potentially overbearing regulations from governments in the developed world,” Piper says. Investing in Bitcoin, the firm adds, is a “quasi call option for both individuals and institutions on this new and potentially disruptive technology.”</p>\n<p>Some economists also view Bitcoin’s rising clout as a means of keeping regulators at bay.</p>\n<p>“My read on the last six to 12 months is that as influential investors come in, it puts pressure on regulators not to do anything,” says Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, who doesn’t expect regulators to sit on their hands forever.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin and other crytpos are regulated by various federal agencies and states, but they aren’t entirely clear or consistent. The IRS classifies cryptos as property, for instance, subjecting it to capital-gains tax. The CFTC said in 2015 that virtual currencies should be “properly defined as commodities.” Banks, for their part, are now allowed to custody cryptos, conduct banking in stablecoins, and participate in blockchain networks under guidelines from the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency.</p>\n<p>But prices for Bitcoin and other cryptos are likely to stay volatile. Only a small fraction of the Bitcoin supply actually trades on exchanges or other platforms—most of it is kept off the market by long-term “hodlers.” That makes the price volatile and act like a thinly traded stock.</p>\n<p>“How bubbly is this market? I think it’s very bubbly,” says Carmen Reinhart, chief economist of the World Bank. “It’s low liquidity and it may not take any melodrama in a thin market to reverse most or all of the price gains we’ve seen.”</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Bitcoin’s use cases are also compelling, she notes, particularly in countries like Venezuela and Lebanon, where hyperinflation and capital controls incentivize the use of unregulated digital currencies.</p>\n<p>“If you want to get money out of Lebanon or any country where you’re concerned about its future prospects—whether it’s inflation, confiscation, or anything else—crypto is a way of transferring [money], a vehicle for capital flight,” she says.</p>\n<p>As for the price, investors should buckle up. “We have to expect huge price volatility,” Reinhart says. “But does this mean we’ll see a crash from which it doesn’t recover?
