Its revenue rose 22% year over year to $45.3 billion, beating analysts' estimates by $1.3 billion. Its adjusted earnings grew 25% to $2.27 per share, which cleared expectations by $0.19.
\n
For the second quarter, Microsoft expects its revenue to rise 16%-18% year over year, which also surpasses analysts' expectations for 14% growth.
\n
Microsoft's numbers were impressive, but some investors might be reluctant to buy its stock after its price has already risen nearly 50% this year. Let's review three reasons to buy Microsoft's stock -- as well as one reason to sell it -- to see if it's still a compelling investment at these prices.
\n

\n
\n
1. Microsoft Cloud's growth
\n
Microsoft's dramatic growth over the past seven years was led by the expansion of its cloud services, which include Azure, Office 365, Dynamics, LinkedIn, and its other cloud-based software. The company reports the growth of these businesses together as the \"Microsoft Cloud.\"
\n
Microsoft Cloud's revenue rose 36% year over year to $20.7 billion during the first quarter, which matched its 36% growth rate in the fourth quarter.
\n
Azure, Microsoft Cloud's most closely watched segment, grew its revenue 48% on a constant currency basis. That represented an acceleration from Azure's 45% constant currency growth in the fourth quarter, and should allay concerns about a potential slowdown.
\n
Azure's share of the global cloud infrastructure market also rose from 19% to 21% between the third quarters of 2020 and 2021, according to Canalys. That puts it firmly in second place behind Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services (AWS), which saw its market share stay flat year over year at 32%.
\n
Microsoft likely wouldn't have achieved that growth without Satya Nadella, who took the helm as the company's third CEO in 2014 and aggressively expanded those services with his \"mobile first, cloud first\" mantra.
\n
2. Reopening tailwinds
\n
During the onset of the pandemic, several of Microsoft's enterprise-facing services -- including Office 365 Commercial, Dynamics 365, and LinkedIn Marketing Solutions -- suffered slowdowns as businesses closed.
\n
But those headwinds waned as more businesses reopened. Office 365 Commercial and Dynamics 365 generated accelerating growth on a constant currency basis in the first quarter, while LinkedIn Marketing continued to grow:
\n
\n <colgroup></colgroup>\n
\n
\n

Revenue Growth (YOY)

\n

Q4 2021

\n

Q1 2022

\n
\n
\n

Office 365 Commercial

\n

20%

\n

21%

\n
\n
\n

Dynamics 365

\n

42%

\n

45%

\n
\n
\n

LinkedIn Marketing

\n

91%

\n

59%

\n
\n
\n
\n
Source: Microsoft. Constant currency basis. YOY = Year over year.
\n
That growth of these \"reopening\" segments, along with the ongoing growth of Azure and its other cloud services, is offsetting the slower growth of Microsoft's Surface and Xbox divisions, which were both affected by the chip shortage and other supply chain constraints during the first quarter.
\n
3. Returning plenty of cash to shareholders
\n
Microsoft transformed into a high-growth company again over the past few years, but it continues to return tens of billions of dollars to its investors.
\n
Microsoft spent over $39 billion on dividends and buybacks in fiscal 2021, which represented about 70% of its free cash flow (FCF). Its revenue rose 22% year over year to $45.3 billion, beating analysts' estimates by $1.3 billion. Its adjusted earnings grew 25% to $2.27 per share, which cleared expectations by $0.19.\nFor the second quarter, Microsoft expects its revenue to rise 16%-18% year over year, which also surpasses analysts' expectations for 14% growth.\nMicrosoft's numbers were impressive, but some investors might be reluctant to buy its stock after its price has already risen nearly 50% this year. Let's review three reasons to buy Microsoft's stock -- as well as one reason to sell it -- to see if it's still a compelling investment at these prices.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Microsoft Cloud's growth\nMicrosoft's dramatic growth over the past seven years was led by the expansion of its cloud services, which include Azure, Office 365, Dynamics, LinkedIn, and its other cloud-based software. The company reports the growth of these businesses together as the \"Microsoft Cloud.\"\nMicrosoft Cloud's revenue rose 36% year over year to $20.7 billion during the first quarter, which matched its 36% growth rate in the fourth quarter.\nAzure, Microsoft Cloud's most closely watched segment, grew its revenue 48% on a constant currency basis. That represented an acceleration from Azure's 45% constant currency growth in the fourth quarter, and should allay concerns about a potential slowdown.\nAzure's share of the global cloud infrastructure market also rose from 19% to 21% between the third quarters of 2020 and 2021, according to Canalys. That puts it firmly in second place behind Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services (AWS), which saw its market share stay flat year over year at 32%.\nMicrosoft likely wouldn't have achieved that growth without Satya Nadella, who took the helm as the company's third CEO in 2014 and aggressively expanded those services with his \"mobile first, cloud first\" mantra.\n2. Reopening tailwinds\nDuring the onset of the pandemic, several of Microsoft's enterprise-facing services -- including Office 365 Commercial, Dynamics 365, and LinkedIn Marketing Solutions -- suffered slowdowns as businesses closed.\nBut those headwinds waned as more businesses reopened. Office 365 Commercial and Dynamics 365 generated accelerating growth on a constant currency basis in the first quarter, while LinkedIn Marketing continued to grow:\n\n\n\n\nRevenue Growth (YOY)\nQ4 2021\nQ1 2022\n\n\nOffice 365 Commercial\n20%\n21%\n\n\nDynamics 365\n42%\n45%\n\n\nLinkedIn Marketing\n91%\n59%\n\n\n\nSource: Microsoft. Constant currency basis. YOY = Year over year.\nThat growth of these \"reopening\" segments, along with the ongoing growth of Azure and its other cloud services, is offsetting the slower growth of Microsoft's Surface and Xbox divisions, which were both affected by the chip shortage and other supply chain constraints during the first quarter.\n3. Returning plenty of cash to shareholders\nMicrosoft transformed into a high-growth company again over the past few years, but it continues to return tens of billions of dollars to its investors.\nMicrosoft spent over $39 billion on dividends and buybacks in fiscal 2021, which represented about 70% of its free cash flow (FCF). It spent another $10.9 billion, or 58% of its FCF, on both plans in the first quarter of 2022.\nMicrosoft's forward dividend yield of 0.8% won't attract any serious income investors, but it reduced its share count by nearly 10% over the past seven years, while offsetting the dilution from its share-based compensation plans.\nThe one reason to sell Microsoft: its valuation\nMicrosoft is worth $2.4 trillion today, roughly eight times its market cap of about $300 billion when Satya Nadella took over as its CEO.\nIts stock currently trades at 13 times this year's sales and 35 times forward earnings. Those valuations are a bit frothy compared to analysts' expectations for 14% sales growth and 9% earnings growth this year.\nThat massive market cap and high valuation could make it difficult for Microsoft to replicate its multibagger gains from the past seven years.\nIs it the right time to buy Microsoft?\nMicrosoft's stock is richly valued, but the bears have been banging that same drum for years as its shares have skyrocketed. I believe Microsoft deserves that premium valuation since it's still a solid long-term investment that will continue to profit from the secular expansion of the cloud services market.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":620,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":823205498,"gmtCreate":1633622525784,"gmtModify":1633622526327,"author":{"id":"3574122255023758","authorId":"3574122255023758","name":"JamesArthur","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0230d592c84aee6b78c6136a020bbb52","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Finally!! This is considered a low P/E and could indicate the stock is undervalued.
\n
Conversely, if a stock is trading at $40 per share and has an EPS of $1, it has a P/E ratio of 40 meaning that for every share investors purchase they claim only $1 in earnings. This is considered a high P/E and could indicate the stock is overvalued.
\n
Four Stocks That May Be Undervalued: EBay, a San Jose-based multinational e-commerce company, has a 12-month EPS of $7.89 ended Friday's trading at $62.47, giving it a P/E of 7.92. This may indicate it is undervalued.
\n
When eBay reported fourth-quarter earnings on Feb. 3, its revenue was up 28% to $2.9 billion, showing it may be going through a period of high growth.
\n
SunPower, a San Jose-based solar energy company, has a 12-month EPS of $2.48 and ended Friday's trading at $29.71, giving it a P/E ratio of 11.99. This may indicate it is undervalued.
\n
When SunPower reported fourth-quarter earnings on Feb. 17, the company said it had added 13,000 new customers. The company didn't report any news nor were there other developments that would explain the stock's decline. Instead, today's drop appears to be due to the volatility that's relatively typical for the stock.
\n
So what
\n
When a high-flying growth stock like Bionano sinks for no apparent reason, the best thing for investors to do is focus on the fundamentals of the company's business. For Bionano, the fundamentals revolve around its Saphyr genomic sequencing system.
\n

\n
\n
Saphyr supports structural variation analysis that's especially helpful in cytogenetic research (the study of changes in chromosomes). Bionano's installed base of Saphyr systems totaled 97 at the end of 2020. Even during the pandemic, the company was able to increase its installed base by nearly one-third.
\n
Bionano generates revenue from instrument sales. The company didn't report any news nor were there other developments that would explain the stock's decline. Instead, today's drop appears to be due to the volatility that's relatively typical for the stock.\nSo what\nWhen a high-flying growth stock like Bionano sinks for no apparent reason, the best thing for investors to do is focus on the fundamentals of the company's business. For Bionano, the fundamentals revolve around its Saphyr genomic sequencing system.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nSaphyr supports structural variation analysis that's especially helpful in cytogenetic research (the study of changes in chromosomes). Bionano's installed base of Saphyr systems totaled 97 at the end of 2020. Even during the pandemic, the company was able to increase its installed base by nearly one-third.\nBionano generates revenue from instrument sales. However, over the longer term as its installed base size grows, sales of consumables including chips and reagents is where the company should make even more money.\nNow what\nOne of the most important ways for Bionano to increase its Saphyr installed base is to roll out more laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) for the system. With a market cap above $1 trillion, it's now worth more than Facebook, and is the fifth-most-valuable stock traded on a U.S. exchange. Similarly, encouraging Ford Lightning reservations have pole-vaulted Ford to a fresh 52-week high.
\n
Then there's up-and-coming EV company Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID), which delivered its first cars last weekend after beginning production in late September. With a market cap of over $55 billion, Lucid may look ridiculously overvalued for a company that's barely begun making cars. But if it has a shot at becoming the next Tesla, then its share price looks very cheap. Let's look at where Lucid stands today and where it's headed to see if it really can become the next Tesla.
\n
\n
Why Tesla is a $1 trillion company
\n
Tesla's success stems from its ability to sustain a high revenue growth rate while also firmly establishing itself as a profitable automaker. Tesla's transition from the Model X and Model S to mostly making Model 3s and Model Ys allowed it to capture market share from a wider range of the car market. 96% of the 237,823 cars that Tesla produced in Q3 were Model 3s and Model Ys.
\n
With scale, Tesla has been able to achieve a high profit margin even as it sells lower-priced cars. For example, Tesla made $7.61 billion in Q3 2020 automotive revenue and $2.11 billion in automotive gross profit, giving it a gross margin of 27.7%. In Q3 2021, Tesla grew its automotive revenue by 58% to $12.06 billion, but made $3.67 billion in automotive gross profit for a gross margin of 30.5%. Tesla is demonstrating a rare ability to sustain and even grow its profit margin while raking in way more revenue. To support all the new Tesla vehicles on the road, the company grew its supercharger stations by 49% compared to Q3 2020 and 10% over just a quarter ago in Q2 2021.
\n
LCID data by YCharts
\n
Despite spending 81% more money on capital expenditures in Q3 2021 than Q3 2020, Tesla was still able to generate $1.33 billion in free cash flow (FCF), just 5% less than Q3 2020. In short, Tesla is the heavyweight automaker, and any company that challenges it has big shoes to fill.
\n
Why Lucid is emerging as a great company
\n
Lucid is following in Tesla's footsteps by releasing its high-margin vehicles in low production first before expanding to higher production volumes and less expensive vehicles. It's also copying Tesla's playbook by limiting its advertising spending, focusing instead on building a network of showrooms and service centers and letting its customers and social media build its brand at a low cost.
\n
Unlike Tesla, Lucid isn't investing in its own fast-charging network, believing it can save a lot of money by leaning on the influx of third-party charger stations. However, that's about the only thing Lucid isn't doing itself. Management has made it clear that it is very protective of its intellectual property, which is one of the main reasons Lucid decided to do all of its manufacturing in-house at its production plant in Arizona.
\n
Lucid's competitive edge is its technology. The company surpassed Tesla in the EV range wars by notching an Environmental Protection Agency-rated range of 520 miles on its Lucid Air Dream Edition Range vehicle, which is the highest rating ever given to an EV.
\n
Aside from its impressive horsepower, range, and fast charging time, Lucid deserves a lot of credit for meeting expectations time and time again. In its early days, Tesla was notorious for overpromising and underdelivering. Tesla's (NASDAQ:TSLA) third-quarter results blew expectations out of the water, catapulting Tesla to a new all-time. With a market cap above $1 trillion, it's now worth more than Facebook, and is the fifth-most-valuable stock traded on a U.S. exchange. Similarly, encouraging Ford Lightning reservations have pole-vaulted Ford to a fresh 52-week high.\nThen there's up-and-coming EV company Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID), which delivered its first cars last weekend after beginning production in late September. With a market cap of over $55 billion, Lucid may look ridiculously overvalued for a company that's barely begun making cars. But if it has a shot at becoming the next Tesla, then its share price looks very cheap. Let's look at where Lucid stands today and where it's headed to see if it really can become the next Tesla.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nWhy Tesla is a $1 trillion company\nTesla's success stems from its ability to sustain a high revenue growth rate while also firmly establishing itself as a profitable automaker. Tesla's transition from the Model X and Model S to mostly making Model 3s and Model Ys allowed it to capture market share from a wider range of the car market. 96% of the 237,823 cars that Tesla produced in Q3 were Model 3s and Model Ys.\nWith scale, Tesla has been able to achieve a high profit margin even as it sells lower-priced cars. To support all the new Tesla vehicles on the road, the company grew its supercharger stations by 49% compared to Q3 2020 and 10% over just a quarter ago in Q2 2021.\nLCID data by YCharts\nDespite spending 81% more money on capital expenditures in Q3 2021 than Q3 2020, Tesla was still able to generate $1.33 billion in free cash flow (FCF), just 5% less than Q3 2020. In short, Tesla is the heavyweight automaker, and any company that challenges it has big shoes to fill.\nWhy Lucid is emerging as a great company\nLucid is following in Tesla's footsteps by releasing its high-margin vehicles in low production first before expanding to higher production volumes and less expensive vehicles. It's also copying Tesla's playbook by limiting its advertising spending, focusing instead on building a network of showrooms and service centers and letting its customers and social media build its brand at a low cost.\nUnlike Tesla, Lucid isn't investing in its own fast-charging network, believing it can save a lot of money by leaning on the influx of third-party charger stations. However, that's about the only thing Lucid isn't doing itself. Management has made it clear that it is very protective of its intellectual property, which is one of the main reasons Lucid decided to do all of its manufacturing in-house at its production plant in Arizona.\nLucid's competitive edge is its technology. The company surpassed Tesla in the EV range wars by notching an Environmental Protection Agency-rated range of 520 miles on its Lucid Air Dream Edition Range vehicle, which is the highest rating ever given to an EV.\nAside from its impressive horsepower, range, and fast charging time, Lucid deserves a lot of credit for meeting expectations time and time again. In its early days, Tesla was notorious for overpromising and underdelivering. Its languishing share price reflected investor frustration with a company that tried to micromanage its manufacturing process and expand new ideas before getting a grip on its Model 3 production. In this case, investor sentiment was correct. Once Tesla solved its Model 3 woes, the rest was history.\nIt's early into its tenure as a publicly traded company, and Lucid is already exhibiting consistency. That could all change in 2022 if Lucid fails to deliver its expected 20,000 Lucid Air sedans. But so far, the company has done an excellent job of delivering on its promises.\nIs Lucid a buy?\nLucid hopes to produce as many cars in 2022 as Tesla produced in about eight days in Q3.
