The moves were made possible by the Federal Reserve’s judgment last week that all of them had sufficiently strong balance sheets.</p>\n<p> <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSTLW\">Morgan Stanley</a> (NYSE:MS) stock was the biggest gainer, rising 3% after its decision to double its dividend to 70 cents a share. Which vehicle maker offers the best deal based on market opportunity, scale, revenue model, growth prospects and valuation? I will compare Ford against NIO in each category and issue a final verdict at the end.</p>\n<p><b>Ford vs. NIO: The battle for the global electric vehicle market is heating up</b></p>\n<p>Although there is a world of difference between Ford and NIO, both companies are set to go toe-to-toe in the rapidly growing global electric vehicle market. Ford’s fleet is not yet EV-focused but this is going to change: Feeling that the EV race is heating up, Ford said it is accelerating its electrification plan by investing&nbsp;$30B into its EV manufacturing capabilities until 2025. Ford’s previous capital plan called for a $22B investment in zero-emission vehicles. Ford also set an ambitious sales goal: 40% of its global sales will be electric within the next decade and 33% of pickup truck sales. Electric vehicle sales account for just 1% of Ford's sales today. As Ford is phasing out combustion engines, it is set to evolve into an all-electric vehicle maker by 2040.</p>\n<p><b>Market opportunity</b></p>\n<p>In 2020, 3.2m electric vehicles were sold in the world which represented a small market share of just 4.2%. China, however, was responsible for buying 41% of all electric vehicles in the world in 2020. Chinese buyers purchased 1.3m electric vehicles last year and sales are set to grow fast as Beijing seeks to boost EV adoption. The second largest market for electric vehicles was Europe which accounted for 42% of global EV sales. The US is only the third-largest market for plug-in electric vehicles in the world.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b48c23b32134542f51227d9b1b612887\" tg-width=\"1083\" tg-height=\"863\"><span>(Source: Wikipedia)</span></p>\n<p>China, by far, is the fastest growing EV market in the world, although Europe is catching up fast, in part due to a legislative efforts to increase adoption of zero-emission passenger vehicles and because of massive investments in a Europe-wide charging station network. NIO is&nbsp;on the cusp of entering the European market&nbsp;in a bid to grow market share in the world’s second-largest EV market before the competition is ready.</p>\n<p>Beijing is a driver behind the electrification of the Chinese auto industry: The government wants to see a&nbsp;twenty percent share&nbsp;of electric vehicles for new car sales by 2025 which will drive EV penetration in NIO’s home market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9871e44eaf69adb27151425887870ace\" tg-width=\"739\" tg-height=\"454\"><span>(Source:Schroders)</span></p>\n<p>Turning to growth projections.</p>\n<p>With more favorable government policies for EV makers in places like China and Europe, these markets are poised to see the fastest sales growth and the highest EV adoption rates in the world. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/61d19dff2f34e2d8828aca854e85d84a\" tg-width=\"825\" tg-height=\"565\"><span>(Source:McKinsey)</span></p>\n<p>Since China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.</p>\n<p><b>Scale and manufacturing competence</b></p>\n<p>Ford has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.</p>\n<p>Winner here: Ford.</p>\n<p><b>Differentiation and BaaS revenue model</b></p>\n<p>Both Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.</p>\n<p>Ford is&nbsp;forming a joint venture&nbsp;with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has&nbsp;formed its own joint venture&nbsp;to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.</p>\n<p>Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. But since NIO is structuring a part of its business model explicitly around battery subscriptions, NIO could benefit more than Ford.</p>\n<p>Battery costs for EVs have decreased 70% since 2014, based on information provided by investment firm Schroders, and are set to decrease more this decade.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c42acb75905affe7570a2f399ea3192f\" tg-width=\"758\" tg-height=\"449\"><span>(Source: Schroders)</span></p>\n<p>The “BaaS” model is genius and could develop into a $500M a year revenue opportunity for NIO long term. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.</p>\n<p><b>Sales growth and valuation</b></p>\n<p>Ford’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.</p>\n<p>Ford's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df5a0a393e44ed74241c5effcdd92350\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>The difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!</p>\n<p>Due to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. The Chinese EV-maker is expected to see sales and delivery growth close to 100% this year and since NIO is only dealing in EVs, NIO gets a much higher market-cap-to-sales ratio than Ford.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/817605c6b1e82c03d0473ea570d32b8f\" tg-width=\"506\" tg-height=\"406\"><span>(Source: Author)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO has larger risks...</b></p>\n<p>NIO is the more risky venture, but also the one that offers the most promise. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.</p>\n<p>Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Ford has a lot of potential in the EV market but since EV sales are still a relatively low percentage of total sales, it will take a long time for Ford to complete its transformation.</p>\n<p>If you believe in the potential of the global EV market, buy NIO. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.\n(Source:McKinsey)\nSince China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.\nScale and manufacturing competence\nFord has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.\nSince NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.\nWinner here: Ford.\nDifferentiation and BaaS revenue model\nBoth Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.\nFord is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.\nThe difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.\nThe BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.\nFord and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. But since NIO is structuring a part of its business model explicitly around battery subscriptions, NIO could benefit more than Ford.\nBattery costs for EVs have decreased 70% since 2014, based on information provided by investment firm Schroders, and are set to decrease more this decade.\n(Source: Schroders)\nThe “BaaS” model is genius and could develop into a $500M a year revenue opportunity for NIO long term. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.\nSales growth and valuation\nFord’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.\nFord's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.\nData by YCharts\nThe difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!\nDue to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. The Chinese EV-maker is expected to see sales and delivery growth close to 100% this year and since NIO is only dealing in EVs, NIO gets a much higher market-cap-to-sales ratio than Ford.\n(Source: Author)\nNIO has larger risks...\nNIO is the more risky venture, but also the one that offers the most promise. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.\nFinal verdict\nNIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.\nFord’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Ford has a lot of potential in the EV market but since EV sales are still a relatively low percentage of total sales, it will take a long time for Ford to complete its transformation.\nIf you believe in the potential of the global EV market, buy NIO. He is now chairman of GameStop and has made key management changes, including hiring a new CEO and CFO who previously worked for <b>Amazon</b>.</p>\n<p>Clearly, Cohen has committed his financial resources and time to making GameStop successful. While he built up impressive credentials at Chewy, which PetSmart bought for $3.4 billion (and still owns a majority stake in despite taking the company public), can he work his magic this time around?</p>\n<h2>Don't get fooled</h2>\n<p>It's a tough road to get GameStop moving in the right direction. Management didn't provide a comparable sales figure, but the fiscal first quarter's top line did increase by better than 25% to $1.3 billion for the period ended on May 1. But you shouldn't get overly excited by this impressive headline figure.</p>\n<p>It is difficult to make year-over-year comparisons since the company cut its store base by 12%. While this would make the sales growth seem more impressive, remember, GameStop was forced to close stores last year due to the pandemic. So this depressed the year-ago figure. Then, the current period benefited from Sony and Microsoft releasing new game consoles last year. This will prove to be a temporary lift since it's a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-time purchase.</p>\n<p>The company will need to follow this up with improved game sales. However, software sales were down during the period. While the company blamed this on lower used game inventory, it has gotten a boost in the past when companies released new systems. This suggests that GameStop's hope for a multi-year bounce from the new systems is already facing hurdles.</p>\n<h2>Details lacking</h2>\n<p>While the new management team has online e-commerce experience, details on a plan forward remain lacking. Undoubtedly, that is coming as the executives meet and figure out where they want to go. This has pushed up prices, particularly for used cars.</p>\n<p>And while most used cars, and those on the road today, are running on internal combustion engines (ICE), the industry agrees that electric vehicles (EVs) are the future. For the last decade, the best way to play that trend has been via Tesla (TSLA). Shareholders in that particular trade have been rewarded handsomely: since June 2011, the car maker's shares are up over 10,000%.</p>\n<p>This year, however, investors have been betting that the industry's old guard can make their businesses work better in an electrified future.</p>\n<p>Through Thursday's close, shares of Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) were both up more than 40%, outpacing both the broader market and all of the market's buzziest names in the EV space.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b210f3a56c6cba72ed1fbbf47bd815c\" tg-width=\"1230\" tg-height=\"498\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Ford and GM have been the leading auto stocks in 2021 as investors bet they can benefit in a growing economy and see returns from big investments in electric cars. (Source: Yahoo Finance)</span></p>\n<p>At an industry conference on Thursday, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company's second quarter earnings were likely to come in better than expected. Earlier this week, GM announced that it would increase its investment in electric vehicles to $35 billion from $27 billion through 2025.</p>\n<p>And it was only a few weeks back that Ford announced its own ambitious plans to electrify more of its fleet, unveiling an electric F-150, its best-selling ICE vehicle, while unveiling plans to invest $30 billion in electric vehicle development over the next five years.</p>\n<p>This year's rally in shares of GM and Ford also remind us (in yet another way) how different this recovery has been from what we endured after the financial crisis.</p>\n<p>GM and Chrysler went bankrupt during the 2008-09 recession; Ford just barely staved off that fate. This time around, these companies are parlaying a surge in consumer demand into increased investments in trying to keep up with the Teslas of the world.</p>\n<p>These announcements out of Ford and GM also come as upstart competitors like Nikola (NKLA) and Lordstown Motors (RIDE) struggle to accurately communicate with investors. Nikola shares, which fell over 50% in 2020, were up about 11% this year through Thursday's close, while Lordstown's stock has been just about cut in half this year. Both Nikola and Lordstown replaced their chief executives after bold pronouncements about orders and capabilities for their vehicles didn't check out.</p>\n<p>Elon Musk's iconoclastic style at Tesla is much imitated but never duplicated by companies hoping to position themselves as the \"next Tesla.\" Tesla's Technoking really is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of one.</p>\n<p>In the years before the pandemic, Tesla's rise and the industry's electrified future pressured shares of Ford, GM, and other automakers. From the time GM emerged from bankruptcy in the fall of 2010, shares of both GM and Ford were trounced by the overall market. This year's gain does not erase that underperformance. And the lead the traditional auto industry has staked on Tesla becoming the leading electric vehicle brand will be hard to overcome.</p>\n<p>But today, what investors seem to see in Ford and GM is at least a chance. A chance to benefit from the post-pandemic economic expansion. Shareholders in that particular trade have been rewarded handsomely: since June 2011, the car maker's shares are up over 10,000%.\nThis year, however, investors have been betting that the industry's old guard can make their businesses work better in an electrified future.\nThrough Thursday's close, shares of Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) were both up more than 40%, outpacing both the broader market and all of the market's buzziest names in the EV space.\nFord and GM have been the leading auto stocks in 2021 as investors bet they can benefit in a growing economy and see returns from big investments in electric cars. (Source: Yahoo Finance)\nAt an industry conference on Thursday, Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company's second quarter earnings were likely to come in better than expected. Earlier this week, GM announced that it would increase its investment in electric vehicles to $35 billion from $27 billion through 2025.\nAnd it was only a few weeks back that Ford announced its own ambitious plans to electrify more of its fleet, unveiling an electric F-150, its best-selling ICE vehicle, while unveiling plans to invest $30 billion in electric vehicle development over the next five years.\nThis year's rally in shares of GM and Ford also remind us (in yet another way) how different this recovery has been from what we endured after the financial crisis.\nGM and Chrysler went bankrupt during the 2008-09 recession; Ford just barely staved off that fate. This time around, these companies are parlaying a surge in consumer demand into increased investments in trying to keep up with the Teslas of the world.\nThese announcements out of Ford and GM also come as upstart competitors like Nikola (NKLA) and Lordstown Motors (RIDE) struggle to accurately communicate with investors. Retail investors, often co-ordinating their actions on online forums such as Reddit’s r/WallStreetBets and in some cases deliberately targeting hedge fund short sellers, drove up the price of stocks such as GameStop and cinema chain AMC Entertainment in January and again in recent weeks. GameStop, for instance, soared from less than $20 at the start of the year to more than $480 at its January peak.</p>\n<p>That led to big losses for some funds, including US-based Melvin Capital, run by Steve Cohen protégé Gabe Plotkin, and Light Street Capital, run by Glen Kacher, a former Tiger cub who worked at Julian Robertson’s Tiger Management. However, the funds remain in operation, and shortly after its losses Melvin received a $2.75bn investment from Cohen’s Point72 Asset Management and Ken Griffin’s Citadel.</p>\n<p>“The decision to close down is related to thinking the equity long-short model is challenged,” said Kronawitter.</p>\n<p>“There are way too many fish in the pond with the same strategy of long-short,” he added. “The traditional edge is being arbed away [eroded by other investors], there’s an oversupply of capital.”</p>\n<p>A person close to the fund said the decision to shut was unrelated to the meme stock rally. One comes from GM <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GM\">$(GM)$</a> under the resurrected Hummer banner, and the other is the quintessential American pickup in the form of the Ford <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\">$(F)$</a> F-150 Lightning. The combination of electric power and iconic nameplates is generating plenty of excitement about both. But while they may share pickup body styles and this new approach to powertrains, their future roles and buyers couldn't be more different. Here's how they compare. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Design \n</p>\n<p>\n  The 2022 GMC Hummer EV  reprises the rugged, off-road look Hummer migrated from military use to the streets. The look of the new EV pays homage to the H2 with its boxy shape, horizontal, slatted grille, and stubby proportions. However, the updated look has a new element in that it has a much more contemporary adventurous feel to it than the original's emphasis on ruggedness. That promise of off-road fun also comes from the Hummer's ability to remove the roof panels for more of an open-air experience. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Rooted more in the practicality of a pickup, the 2022  Ford F-150 Lightning  looks like a conventional internal combustion engine truck. A clue that this is a different kind of pickup comes from the LED head- and taillamp elements that differentiate the Lightning from the standard F-150. Still, the Lightning follows tradition with its boxy cab and bed. This conservative approach to styling should appeal to the existing truck market, especially those who depend on basic functionality for both work and play. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Construction \n</p>\n<p>\n  The Hummer EV uses conventional steel unit-body construction. Under-body armor keeps it true to its off-road mission; these steel plates protect the battery pack and other drivetrain components from rugged terrain. This cladding and the stiff structure provided by the battery pack allow the use of a lightweight composite removable roof that features transparent \"Sky Roof\" panels. \n</p>\n<p>\n  The Ford F-150 Lightning, like its F Series siblings, employs aluminum body panels. Ford pioneered the use of this material for pickups starting in 2015. Since the Hummer is more of an upscale off-roader, the interior on all models will be fairly well-appointed. Among the features buyers can expect are a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.4-inch center infotainment touchscreen. Standard features include removable roof panels, high-definition surround vision cameras, rear cabin power drop glass, and premium all-weather floor liners with carpet inserts. The Hummer EV will also boast GM's SuperCruise hands-free driving system. \n</p>\n<p>\n  With its conventional crew cab setup, we expect the Ford F-150 to accommodate at least five passengers and perhaps six if Ford offers a front bench on its base work truck. The standard instrumentation includes a 12-inch digital display for the driver and a 12-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for infotainment. A 15.5-inch center touchscreen is standard on upper trims, along with such features as 10-way power-adjustable seats, 8-speaker Bang &amp; Olufsen sound system, and leather seating surfaces. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Performance \n</p>\n<p>\n  The 2022 Hummer EV will bow late this year as the top-of-the-line First Edition model (already sold out). It boasts three electric motors, more than 300 miles of range, 1,000 horsepower, and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Its regular production counterpart will be called the Hummer EV3X and will be available in 2022 but is rated at 830 horsepower while the torque rating remains the same. The EV2X follows and boasts two electric motors, 300 miles of range, 625 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque. It goes on sale in 2023. The base model EV2 won't see production until 2024. It will have the same horsepower and torque ratings as the EV2x, but only a 250-mile range. First Edition and 3X models will feature Watts to Freedom, a launch system similar to Tesla's Ludicrous mode that promises 0-60 mph acceleration of about 3 seconds. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Also see: This is the full-size pickup that costs the least over 5 years  \n</p>\n<p>\n  Four trim levels will initially be available on the Ford F-150, a basic work truck, a mid-range XLT trim, and two top-level luxury models in the Lariat and Platinum. Ford will offer a dual-motor setup with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> for each axle giving all Lightning models all-wheel drive. The motors provide 426 horsepower in base trim with an upgrade producing 563 horses and 775 lb-ft of torque. The standard battery will provide 230 miles of range, while a larger available pack boosts that figure to 300 miles. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Capability \n</p>\n<p>\n  GMC has yet to release towing and payload figures for the Hummer EV. We can speculate that, in top trim with the 11,500 lb-ft torque figure, its towing capability will be more than 10,000 pounds. The Hummer EV features a 5-foot cargo box sporting GM's flexible-opening Multipro tailgate. A front trunk accommodates the removable roof panels. We expect the payload capacity to be about in the 2,000-pound range given the size of the bed and the power ratings for the various EV drivetrains. \n</p>\n<p>\n  The Ford F-150 Lightning promises a maximum payload of 2,000 pounds, which is about midway between the ratings of conventional Ford pickups, which range from 1,500 to about 5,000 pounds. In top form, the Lightning will be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds. Similar to the standard F-150, we expect the Lighting to come with a 6.5-foot box. While the payload and towing capabilities are what you'd expect from a pickup, regularly carrying cargo or towing trailers will greatly impact range and performance. The Hummer is meant for serious off-road work, while the Ford is meant for serious work. Still, the real value in both coming to the market is to find out whether the public is ready for electric pickup trucks. But while they may share pickup body styles and this new approach to powertrains, their future roles and buyers couldn't be more different. Here's how they compare. \n</p>\n<p>\n  Design \n</p>\n<p>\n  The 2022 GMC Hummer EV  reprises the rugged, off-road look Hummer migrated from military use to the streets. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has&nbsp;formed its own joint venture&nbsp;to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. He is now chairman of GameStop and has made key management changes, including hiring a new CEO and CFO who previously worked for <b>Amazon</b>.</p>\n<p>Clearly, Cohen has committed his financial resources and time to making GameStop successful. While he built up impressive credentials at Chewy, which PetSmart bought for $3.4 billion (and still owns a majority stake in despite taking the company public), can he work his magic this time around?</p>\n<h2>Don't get fooled</h2>\n<p>It's a tough road to get GameStop moving in the right direction. Management didn't provide a comparable sales figure, but the fiscal first quarter's top line did increase by better than 25% to $1.3 billion for the period ended on May 1. But you shouldn't get overly excited by this impressive headline figure.</p>\n<p>It is difficult to make year-over-year comparisons since the company cut its store base by 12%. While this would make the sales growth seem more impressive, remember, GameStop was forced to close stores last year due to the pandemic. So this depressed the year-ago figure. Then, the current period benefited from Sony and Microsoft releasing new game consoles last year. This will prove to be a temporary lift since it's a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-time purchase.</p>\n<p>The company will need to follow this up with improved game sales. However, software sales were down during the period. While the company blamed this on lower used game inventory, it has gotten a boost in the past when companies released new systems.
