What will Nio report?</p>\n<p>Well, earlier this month, the company warned of a 27.5% plunge in its October deliveries, relative to cars delivered in October 2020. That certainly sounds ominous. On the other hand,Nio also saidthat it is continuing to expand its ability to produce new cars, aiming for an annual production capacity of 240,000 electric vehicles.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the company remains on track to begin selling its new ET7 luxury sedan in China next year, and to begin sales ofits ES8 electric SUV in Norwayas well, both of which are developments that could help improve sales next year.</p>\n<p>Now what</p>\n<p>On Wall Street, forecasts call for Nio to report third-quarter sales more than doubling to $1.46 billion. If October's negative sales surprise upends that expectation, things could get ugly -- the more so because Nio's earnings are anticipated to remain negative with a loss of $0.09 per share.</p>\n<p>And yet, the more decisive factordriving Nio stock up or downtonight may be the company's forecast. On Yahoo! Finance, analysts are hoping to see Nio finally turn a profit in the fourth quarter -- $0.01 per share. The company's still probably at least a year away from delivering full-year profits, mind you. widespread concerns over the impact of supply chain challenges to corporate profits. These better-than-feared results helped power both the S&amp;P 500 and Dow to fresh record highs in the past week.</p>\n<p>As of Friday, about 23% of S&amp;P 500 companies had reported actual results for the third quarter. Of these, 84% topped Wall Street's expectations for earnings per share (EPS), according to data from FactSet. And the estimated earnings growth rate for the S&amp;P 500 stood at 32.7%, based on actual results and expectations for companies still yet to report. If maintained through the end of third-quarter earnings season, that would mark the third-highest earnings growth rate posted for the index since 2010.</p>\n<p>Given the string of stronger-than-expected results posted so far, this week's docket of reports has a heightened bar to clear.</p>\n<p>And that's especially set to be the case for the Big Tech companies, including <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a> (FB), Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN) and Alphabet (GOOGL). Most of these far outperformed the market last year, but have seen their stock gains cool so far in 2021 amid concerns over rising interest rates, chip shortages, and slowing growth after a surge in online media usage and demand for software during the height of the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Despite the near-term challenges, however, some strategists have struck an upbeat tone on the technology sector as a whole.</p>\n<p>\"While the chip shortage will be a major conversation piece for tech investors during tech earnings season and clearly be an overhang, we believe the Street will instead look through any near-term disruption and focus on the underlying healthy demand drivers into 2022 which look robust,\" said Wedbush analyst Dan Ives in a note last week.</p>\n<p>A number of the closely watched technology companies that reported last week posted results that disappointed investors or highlighted the lingering impact of these myriad concerns. Snap (SNAP), the parent company of the disappearing photo-sharing platform app Snapchat, offered a current-quarter forecast that fell short of expectations, with supply chain challenges for its advertiser customer base and privacy-related changes to Apple's iOS operating system weighing on sales and profits.</p>\n<p>The weak guidance sent Snap's stock down by 27% on Friday for its biggest single-day drop on record, and dragged down shares of other ad-driven companies including Facebook, Pinterest (PINS), <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a> (TWTR) and Alphabet.</p>\n<p>In July, Facebook had already flagged an early impact from Apple's iOS privacy update, which allows users to better control how apps track them. Both Snap and American Express (AXP) last week highlighted a pickup they were witnessing in consumer travel behavior and out-of-the-home spending in their third-quarter earnings releases and calls.</p>\n<p>\"Lost in the noise, SNAP also highlighted opportunity driven by travel budgets returning, which is a positive read through to GOOGL’s general search business,\" Daniel Salmon, BMO Capital Markets internet and media analyst, wrote in a note on Friday.</p>\n<p>Ongoing semiconductor shortages and supply-related issues also dealt a blow to other tech companies. Tesla (TSLA) said in its earnings report last week that, \"A variety of challenges, including semiconductor shortages, congestion at ports and rolling blackouts, have been impacting our ability to keep factories running at full speed.\"</p>\n<p>And reports earlier this month from Bloomberg suggested Apple was likely to cut its iPhone 13 production targets by as many as 10 million units amid chip shortages. The company, however, is still expected to post still-solid revenue growth of 21%, bringing sales to $84.67 billion as consumer demand for the latest smartphones remained resilient, especially in the U.S. and China.</p>\n<p>Rounding out this tech-heavy earnings week will be Amazon (AMZN), which posts quarterly results alongside Apple on Thursday after market close. The company has lagged the market since last reporting earnings in late July, falling 7.3% since July 29 versus a 2.9% gain in the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p>Investors have been especially cautious on Amazon given widespread supply chain constraints, rising labor costs and fears that e-commerce sales and Amazon Web Services growth could slow after a pandemic-induced surge. Amazon shares had climbed by 76% in 2020, and the stock was the second-best FAANG performer after Apple that year.</p>\n<p>\"Concerns across top line, bottom line, and broader macro have collectively driven cautious sentiment into year-end,\" wrote JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth in a note last Thursday. \"However, we believe there is still significant secular shift toward e-commerce ahead and Amazon has a very strong track record around investing into future growth opportunities.\"</p>\n<p>\"Macro issues related to supply chain, port congestion, and inventory are well-documented and have intensified into the holiday season, driving concerns that delays could impact timing of AMZN receiving 1P/3P [first-party and third-party seller] inventory and certain items could remain out-of-stock,\" he added. \"Overall, we believe AMZN embedded some degree of disruption into the 3Q guide and we believe AMZN scaled inventory in anticipation of greater 2H demand.\"</p>\n<p>In late July, Amazon said it expected third-quarter net sales to total $106 billion to $112 billion, missing consensus expectations at the time. The self-appointed “Technoking” of Tesla&nbsp;has been mostly using his massive social media following to pump up the price of doge,&nbsp;tweeting back on April 1&nbsp;that he would use his SpaceX rockets to put a physical Doge coin on the literal moon, echoing the social media goal of taking the coin’s price “to the moon.”</p><p>Beesetti said that she first got involved in dogecoin — she also invests in technology stocks and exchange-traded funds — at the prompting of Musk’s social-media missives from last summer.</p><p>She bought dogecoin when it was trading at 3/10ths of a penny and she kept dollar-cost averaging her position in the digital asset created in 2013 even as it hit around 1 cent last August.</p><p>Musk has become a rallying point for dogecoin holders on sites like Reddit and his coming appearance on “SNL” is a hotly anticipated moment inside and outside crypto markets, which had largely been centered on bitcoin&nbsp;and Ethereum&nbsp;,the two largest cryptos in the world.</p><p>Dogecoin has long held the reputation as a joke currency in the digital-asset realm but it is hard to deny that its surging value has gripped Main Street and Wall Street’s attention — at least momentarily.</p><p>Former “SNL” cast member and comedian David Spade on Thursday tweeted that he wondered if Musk’s appearance on the sketch show would equate to a 90-minute infomercial for doge, adding, perhaps tongue in cheek that he was buying dogecoin.</p><p>Oddsmakers at betting platformSportsBettingDime.com&nbsp;have established a number of prop bets about Musk’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” including which if any crypto he mentions first on the show.</p><p>Which cryptocurrency does Musk mention first:</p><p>1. Does Not Mention Bitcoin: +400</p><p>Beesetti said that she sold about $8,000 worth of dogecoin recently to buy a pair of Gucci shoes, an iPhone and upped her position in Ether thar runs on the Ethereum protocol but has otherwise been a steady holder of doge.</p><p>The investor wouldn’t offer specific figures but said that her holdings currently range from 50,000 to 100,000 dogecoin.</p><p>Perhaps unlike some investors in doge, she is under no illusion that it has utility but submits to the possibility that momentum could build in a parody asset to such an extent that it forges its own legitimacy.</p><p>“Doge doesn’t have intrinsic value,” Beesetti said. “The value becomes real if you and a collective group of people believe in it. And in this case, there are more groups and people than before who believe.”</p><p>That said, reality could hit meme coin holders hard come Sunday morning, at least one analyst said.</p><p>“Post-SNL, some crypto traders could abandon short-term&nbsp;Dogecoin&nbsp;bets once it becomes clear that it is not skyrocketing to the moon or at the heavily eyed $1 level,” wrote Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a research note.</p><p>The analyst also notes that strong conviction of dogecoin investors,known as hodlers in the crypto world, could defy logic and keep prices buoyant.</p><p>“The retail-army of traders that have been committed to Doge might remain stubbornly hodlers, so we shouldn’t be surprised if a sell the event reaction does not happen,” the Oanda strategist said.</p><p>How it all plays out for dogecoin is anyone’s guess.</p><p>“It’s just a meme currency but sometimes the most entertaining outcome becomes the reality,” Beesetti said.</p><p>That meme currency has enjoyed a spectacular ride compared against most other assets. The president addresses a joint session of Congress Wednesday evening.It’s a huge week for earnings with about a third of the S&P 500 reporting, including Big Tech names, such as Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet and Amazon.As many have already done, firms like Boeing, Ford,Caterpillar and McDonald’s, are likely to detail cost pressures they are facing from rising materials and transportation costs and supply chain disruptions.At the same time, the Fed is expected to defend its policy of letting inflation run hot, while assuring markets it sees the pick-up in prices as only temporary. The central bank meets on Tuesday and Wednesday.The central bank takes the main stage“I think the Fed would like not to be a feature next week, but the Fed will be forced from the background because of concerns about inflation,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton.The central bank is not expected to make any policy moves, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press briefing following the meeting Wednesday will be closely watched.So far, the barrage of earnings news has been positive, with 86% of companies reporting earnings beats. Corporate profits are expected to be up about 33.9% for the first quarter, based on estimates and actual reports, according to Refinitiv. Revenues are about 9.9% higher.There is important inflation data Friday when the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge is reported.The personal consumption expenditure report is expected to show a 1.8% rise in core inflation, still below the Fed’s target of 2%. Other data releases include the first-quarter gross domestic product on Thursday, which is expected to have grown by 6.5%, according to Dow Jones.“I think the Fed has no urgency to shift monetary policy at this point,” said Ian Lyngen, head of U.S. rates strategy at BMO. “The Fed needs to acknowledge that the data is improving. We had a strong first quarter.”“The Fed needs to acknowledge that but at the same time they’re keeping extremely accommodative policy in place, so they’ll have to make a note to the fact that the easy policy is warranted,” he said.Lyngen said the Fed will likely point to continued concerns about the pandemic globally as a potential risk to the economic recovery.Powell is also expected to once more explain that the Fed will let inflation rise above its 2% target for a period of time before it raises rates so that the economy can have more time to heal. “It’s going to be a challenge for the Fed,” said Swonk.The base effects for the next several months will make inflation appear to have jumped sharply because of the comparison to a weak period last year. The consumer price index for April could be above 3%, compared to 2.6% last month, Swonk added.“The Fed is trying to let a lot more people get out onto the dance floor before it calls ‘last call,’” she said. “Really what Powell has been saying since day one is if we take care of people on the margins and bring them back into the labor force, the rest will take care of itself.”Stocks were slightly lower in the past week, and Treasury yields held at lower levels. The 10-year yield,which moves opposite price, was at 1.55% Friday.The S&P 500was down 0.1%, ending the week at 4,180, while Nasdaq Composite was down nearly 0.3% at 14,016. The Dow was off just shy of 0.5% at 34,043.Tax hike prospectsStocks were hit hard on Thursday when after a news report said that Biden is expected to propose a capital gains tax rate of 39.6% for people earning more than $1 million a year.Combined with the 3.8% net investment income tax, the new levy would more than double the long term capital gains rate of 20% or the richest Americans.Strategists said Biden is expected to propose raising the income tax rate for those earning more than $400,000.“I think a lot of people are starting to price in the risk there going to be a significant increase in both corporate and capital gains taxes,” said Lyngen.So far, companies have not provided much in the way of commentary on the proposed hike in corporate taxes to 28% from 21% but they have been talking about other costs.David Bianco, chief investment strategist for the Americas at DWS, said he expects larger companies will do better dealing with supply chain constraints than smaller ones. Big Tech is also likely to fare better during the semiconductor shortage than auto makers, which have already announced production shutdowns, he said.“Next week is tech week. I think we’re going to get down on our knees and just be in awe of their business models and their ability to grow at a behemoth scale,” Bianco said.He said he’s not in favor of Wall Street’s popular trade into cyclicals and out of growth. He still favors growth.“We’re overweight equities really because we’re concerned about rising interest rates,” Bianco said. “I’m not bullish in that I expect the market to rise that much from here.”“We stuck with growth and dug deeper into bond substitutes, utilities, staples, real estate,” he said, adding he is underweight industrials, energy and materials. “Energy is doomed. It’s being nationalized via regulation. I do like industrials, they are well-run companies, but I do think infrastructure spending expectations for classic infrastructure are too high.”He also said industrials are good businesses, but the stocks have become overvalued.Bianco said he likes big box stores, but smaller retailers are facing big challenges that were already impacting them prior to Covid. He also finds small biotech firms attractive.“I like healthcare stocks. Those valuations are reasonable. People have been paranoid about politicians beating on them since 1992. but investors no doubt will be listening to his remarks for hints about what the recovery in employment or rise in inflation after the pandemic might mean for financial markets.</p>\n<p>Investors also may want to pay close attention to what else Powell might say.</p>\n<p>\"He's using his profile to call attention to it,\" said Sheila Bair, former head of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, of Powell's recent emphasis on the D.C. tent city, as well as his frequent mention of the nation's vast income inequality during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>\"But what the Fed really hasn't talked about,\" Bair said, is how \"inequality has been made worse by monetary policy,\" particularly since most assets, including soaring stocks benefit from his COVID-era policies, but are owned mostly by the wealthy .</p>\n<p>Bair, a key architect of post-2008 financial crisis banking reforms, wants to hear Powell speak more about the \"limits of monetary policy, that may be doing more harm than good,\" particularly when it comes to households and retirees looking to grow savings without taking on too much risk.</p>\n<p>\"No <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> questions his motives, or his best of intentions,\" Bair said. \"But is it really helping more than it's hurting?\"</p>\n<p><b>End Ironclad</b></p>\n<p>Karen Petrou, a banking policy expert who recently finished writing a book called \"Engine of Inequality ,\" about the pitfalls of Fed policy, wants the Fed to stop relying on \"bad data\" to inform its decisions, while ignoring the fact that the U.S. no longer has a \"large and vibrant middle class.\"</p>\n<p>She also wants the Fed to promptly say it is opposed to keeping interest rates low as economic activity picks up, and to stop providing an \"ironclad\" safety net for sectors like the U.S. high-yield bond market.</p>\n<p>\"You take a risk, you pay the price,\" Petrou, the co-founder Federal Financial Analytics, Inc. told MarketWatch, while warning that Fed backstops, including its slate of emergency lending facilities rolled out last year, create an \"acute moral hazard\" that could be \"potentially terminal, with markets expecting the Fed always to rescue them.\"</p>\n<p>U.S. corporations borrowed record amounts of debt not only have kept credit flowing on Wall Street, but also contributed to accelerating asset values as investors hunted for yield.</p>\n<p>Earlier in April, yields on the \"junkiest\" bracket of CCC-rated and lower-rated U.S. high-yield bonds tumbled to a new low of about 7.1% , which compares with a record high of almost 40% in 2008.</p>\n<p>For a brief stretch last year, the Fed was buying up corporate debt for the first time in history. That program ended in late December, in part because borrowing conditions for big corporations rarely had been better, even for businesses considered fairly risky.
