A separate report showed U.S. retail sales dropped more than expected in May.\n“There was a bit of a reaction to the economic data we got, which, for the most part, shows that the economy is starting to wean itself off stimulus, the recovery is slowing down a little, and inflation is continuing to grow,” said Ed Moya, senior market analyst for the Americas at OANDA.\n“We’re seeing some very modest weakness, and it’ll be choppy leading up to the Fed decision. Right now, the Fed is probably in a position to show they are thinking about tapering, but they’re still a long way from actually doing it.”\nThe Fed is likely to announce in August or September a strategy for reducing its massive bond buying program, but will not start cutting monthly purchases until early next year, a Reuters poll of economists found.\nThe benchmark S&P 500, the blue-chip Dow Jones and the tech-focused Nasdaq have risen 13%, 12.1% and 9.2% respectively so far this year, largely driven by optimism about an economic reopening.\nHowever, the S&P 500 has been broadly stuck within a range, despite recording its 29th record-high finish of 2021 on Monday, versus 33 for all of last year.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94.42 points, or 0.27%, to 34,299.33, the S&P 500 lost 8.56 points, or 0.20%, to 4,246.59 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 101.29 points, or 0.71%, to 14,072.86.\nSeven of the 11 major S&P sectors slipped. Among them was communication services, which ended 0.5% lower, having hit a record intraday high earlier in the session.\nThe largest gainer was the energy index, which rose 2.1% on oil prices hitting multi-year highs on a positive demand outlook. Exxon Mobil Corp had its best day since Mar. 5, jumping 3.6%. Market corrections are par for the course when investing in stocks, but that same history shows these downturns lay the foundation for great returns afterward.
\n
If you've been thinking about buying shares of a video game stock, the next market pullback would be a great buying opportunity. Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI), Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), and Tencent (OTC:TCEHY) are cash-rich leaders in the burgeoning video game industry that can deliver market-beating returns over the long term. Let's find out a bit more about these three stocks.
\n
\n
1. Activision Blizzard
\n
Activision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings. It's best known for making one of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in Call of Duty. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first Call of Duty title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.
\n
The Call of Duty franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.
\n
Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.
\n
It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.
\n
Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.
\n
2. Electronic Arts
\n
Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably Madden and FIFA. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.
\n
Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter Apex Legends launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous NCAA Football franchise under the new title EA Sports College Football, which should be released within the next few years.
\n
EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.
\n
In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year, which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.
\n
3. Tencent
\n
Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in League of Legends. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.
\n
Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.
\n
Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.
\n
Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development. It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.
\n
\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"
\n
However, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Tencent has come under scrutiny by regulators that have cracked down on \"inappropriate\" content in the company's games, but Tencent has been able to navigate through these obstacles and deliver market-beating returns to investors. The stock price has fallen recently, which can be chalked up to regulatory issues and near-term investments in the business that will pressure profitability this year. Ourcall of the dayfrom Citigroup rounds up some of the best internet stock bets from the U.S. and elsewhere right now, giving the sector a thumbs-up.
\n
“Against a backdrop of stepped-up regulation, geopolitical tensions and yet to be fully contained COVID-19 cases, we believe the internet sector will remain one of the more attractive options in global portfolio allocation given technology innovation and scale efficiency, and as investors weigh growth potential vs. risks,” said Citi’s Global Internet team, in a recent conference call with clients.
\n
But not all of those stocks are a sure thing. U.S. analyst Jason Bazinet notes that investment banks and institutional investors are “just too bullish” on the strength of advertising dollars going forward for U.S. internet stocks. After a big growth rebound from the second quarter of 2020, Wall Street banks see even stronger ad growth going forward — $107 billion this year and $70 to $75 billion in 2022 and 2023, he said.
\n
While the institutional investors credit that growth to a “new era of higher ad intensity for every dollar of economic activity,” Bazinet says it’s really down to a rebound in economic activity, but that e-commerce has “already rolled over.” For that reason, he isn’t recommending investors buy Google parent AlphabetGOOGL,FacebookFB,TwitterTWTR,PinterestPINSor Snapchat parent SnapSNAP.
\n
“We think investors would be far better served to buy AmazonAMZNwhere we’re just a few quarters away from locking those difficult comps, and the stock has sort of underperformed because of those difficult e-commerce comps,” says the analyst.
\n
He also highlights an under-the-radar segment that plays into that advertising, with companies like IronSourceISor AppLovinAPPthat are “just thriving” in the area of mobile game advertising. Wall Street estimates aren’t too high on the sector either, he says.
\n
Citi also came up with a few China picks, as analysts weighed on the regulatory pressures the tech sector has been seeing this year. With e-commerce a key cog in the domestic consumption wheel, it’s probably least at risk from Beijing moves, said analyst Alicia Yap. That said, online gaming is a riskier subset and least likely to find government support because that spending doesn’t recirculate back to society, only to companies.
\n
Citi’s top China picks include buy-rated e-retailer JD.comJD,“because it still has the user growth story” for active transaction users, and is one of few companies likely to see margin improvement trends in the coming year.
\n
Citi also recommends BaiduBIDU,which Yap sees as less exposed to regulatory headlines. The company is also being granted a few smart city projects — a government aim to use technology to improve urban infrastructure and services. “That should demonstrate Baidu’s ability on ensuring the protection of data transfer and data storage, etc.,” said Yap.
\n
Elsewhere, analyst Brian Gong said regulatory pressure probably won’t hit China video-sharing website BilibiliBILItoo bad. TheS&P 500slid 1.3% to 4,166.45. Both the Dow and S&P 500 hit their session lows in the final minutes of trading and closed around those levels. TheNasdaq Compositeclosed 0.9% lower at 14,030.38. Economic comeback plays led the market losses.\nFor the week, the 30-stock Dow lost 3.5%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down by 1.9% and 0.2%, respectively, week to date.\nSt. Louis Federal Reserve President Jim Bullardtold CNBC's \"Squawk Box\"on Friday it was natural for the Fed to tilt a little \"hawkish\" this week and that the first rate increase from the central bank would likely come in 2022. His comments came after the Fed on Wednesday added two rate hikes to its 2023 forecast and increased its inflation projection for the year, putting pressure on stock prices.\n\"The fear held by some investors is that if the Fed tightens policy sooner than expected to help cool inflationary pressures, this could weigh on future economic growth,\" Truist Advisory Services chief market strategist Keith Lerner said in a note. To be sure, he added it would be premature to give up on the so-called value trade right now.\nPockets of the market most sensitive to the economic rebound led the sell-off this week. The S&P 500 energy sector and industrials dropped 5.2% and 3.8%, respectively, for the week. Financials and materials meanwhile, lost more than 6% each. These groups had been market leaders this year on the back of the economic reopening.\nThe decline in stocks came as the Fed's actions caused a drastic flattening of the so-called Treasury yield curve. This means the yields of shorter-duration Treasurys — like the 2-year note — rose while longer-duration yields like the benchmark 10-year declined. The retreat in long-dated bond yields reflects less optimism toward economic growth, while the jump in short-end yields shows the expectations of the Fed raising rates.\nThis phenomenon hurt bank stocks particularly as their earnings could take a hit when the spread between short-term and long-term rates narrows. Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase shares on Friday lost more than 2% each. Citigroup fell by 1.8%, posting its 12th straight daily decline.\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell said Wednesday that officials have discussed tapering bond buying and would at some point begin slowing the asset purchases.\n\"This week's first whiff of an eventual change in Fed policy was a reminder that emergency monetary conditions and the free-money era will ultimately end,\" strategists at MRB Partners wrote in a note. \"We expect a series of incremental retreats from the Fed's benign inflation outlook in the coming months.\"\nCommodity prices were underpressure this weekas China attempted to cool rising prices and as the U.S. dollar strengthens. Copper, gold and platinum fell once again on Friday.\nFriday also coincided with the quarterly \"quadruple witching\" in which options and futures on indexes and equities expire. This event may have contributed to more volatile trading during the session.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":116,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":870450446,"gmtCreate":1636643361780,"gmtModify":1636643361930,"author":{"id":"3570276764383745","authorId":"3570276764383745","name":"dividendhunt","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3570276764383745","authorIdStr":"3570276764383745"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$Go go go! In November, GM upped its spending plans from $20 billion, a figure that was announced in March before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the auto industry.
\n
The Detroit company declined to comment.
\n
The expected announcement of increased spending by GM comes less than a month after rival Ford Motor Co(F.N)upped its EV spending by more than a third to over $30 billion by 2030.
\n
The combined $65 billion in commitments by the largest U.S. automakers, as well as increased spending by EV leader Tesla Inc(TSLA.O)and startups including Lucid and Rivian reflect the EV arms race that has left some automakers like Lordstown Motors Corp(RIDE.O)scrambling to raise more funds.
\n
In addition, GM Chief Executive Mary Barra is scheduled to meet on Wednesday with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other key Democrats to discuss EVs and vehicle emissions, the sources said.
\n
Barra will also meet U.S. Representative Richard Neal, head of the tax policy Ways and Means Committee, Frank Pallone, who chairs the Energy and Commerce Committee, and two key Michigan Democrats: Representatives Dan Kildee and Debbie Dingell, the sources said.
\n
WOOING WASHINGTON
\n
Working with Washington is critical as President Joe Biden has proposed $174 billion to boost EVs and charging as part of his infrastructure plan, including $100 billion in new EV rebates. GM's ability to benefit from the current $7,500 federal EV tax credit has expired.
\n
GM has sparred with Democrats over vehicle emissions rules, but last week said it supported overall emissions reductions in California's 2019 deal with other major automakers. It has also sought more flexibility to hit carbon reduction target between now and 2026.
\n
The Associated Press reported on Monday that GM planned to announce two new U.S. battery plants, citing comments by President Mark Reuss. GM confirmed the executive's comments, but sources said the company has not decided where in the United States to build the plants, which are each expected to cost more than $2 billion.
\n
In January, GM said it was setting a goal to sell all its new cars, SUVs and light pickup trucks with zero tailpipe emissions by 2035, a dramatic shift away from gasoline and diesel engines.
\n
GM and its South Korean joint-venture partner, LG Energy Solution(003550.KS), are already building a battery plant in northeastern Ohio and have announced a second, $2.3 billion battery plant will be located in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
\n
GM confirmed in November it would speed up the rollout of new EVs, with plans to offer 30 models globally by 2025, up from a prior target of 20 by 2023. Barra said the automaker wants to exceed annual sales of 1 million EVs in the United States and China by 2025.
\n
On May 26, a Senate committee advanced legislation that would boost tax credits to as much as $12,500 for EVs assembled by union workers in the United States. The current maximum tax credit is $7,500.
\n
The bill also includes a 30% tax credit for manufacturers to retool or build new facilities to produce advanced energy technologies including batteries.
