For example, investing $300 a month could grow into more than $1 million in 30 years if it can generate a 12% annual return. That's slightly better than the average stock market return over the last 50 years of nearly 11%.
\n
Many companies have a long history of beating the market. Three companies that appear likely to continue doing so in the decades ahead are Brookfield Renewable , Crown Castle International , and NextEra Energy . Because of that, $100 invested in each one every month could grow into a $1 million nest egg by retirement.
\n
Benefiting from a powerful megatrend
\n
Brookfield Renewable has enriched its investors over the years. Since its inception, the renewable energy producer has generated an annualized total return of 19%. The company had done that by investing billions of dollars into expanding its renewable energy portfolio. That has powered more than 10% annual growth in its cash flow per share, supporting 6% annual dividend increases over the last decade.
\n
However, Brookfield's best days appear to lie ahead. The global economy needs to invest trillions of dollars to decarbonize the energy sector over the next 30 years. That should enable Brookfield to continue to invest in expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
\n
The company currently has 36 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in development. That's bigger than the company's current operating portfolio of about 21 GW. Combined with rising power rates, and its growing scale, these projects should support up to 11% annual cash flow per share growth through at least 2026.
\n
Meanwhile, Brookfield sees up to another 9% yearly boost from future acquisitions. Add that growing renewable-powered cash flow stream to the company's 3%-yielding dividend, and Brookfield appears to have the power to produce double-digit annual returns for decades to come.
\n
Connected to the data supercycle
\n
Crown Castle has been an exceptional value creator over the years. The infrastructure-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) has delivered a more than 13% annual total return over the two-plus decades since its initial public offering.
\n
A major driver of those returns has been the billions of dollars the company has poured into expanding its communications infrastructure portfolio. Over the last decade alone, the REIT spent $31 billion on acquisitions and capital expenditures (capex), powering 9% annual dividend growth since 2014.
\n
The company still sees significant investment opportunities ahead. Crown Castle noted that the telecom industry's rollout of 5G networks represents a decade-long investment cycle. Meanwhile, some see a 100-year data infrastructure upgrade investment opportunity to support the digital economy. Because of that, Crown Castle has a lot of growth ahead of it, which should drive continued strong returns.
\n
Crown Castle expects to grow its 3.2%-yielding dividend at a 7% to 8% annual rate in the near term. That suggests the company could deliver double-digit total returns in the coming years.
\n
Plugged into several growth catalysts
\n
NextEra Energy has also created an enormous amount of wealth for its investors over the years. The utility has generated a roughly 700% total return over the last decade alone, crushing the 276% total return produced by the S&P 500. Powering the company's robust results has been its ability to deliver above-average earnings and dividend growth. It has increased its earnings per share at an 8.7% compound annual rate since 2005, supporting 9.6% compound annual dividend growth.
\n
A major catalyst has been the company's leadership in renewable energy. It has grown into one of the world's largest wind and solar energy producers.
\n
That leadership should continue since it has one of the world's biggest backlogs of wind and solar energy development projects. In addition to tried-and-true technologies like wind and solar, NextEra is a leader in emerging technologies, including battery storage and green hydrogen. Meanwhile, it's tapping into other sources of growth like water infrastructure. Because of that, NextEra should have plenty of power to continue growing its earnings and dividend in the decades ahead.
\n
Grow rich slowly
\n
Compound interest can do wonders for your retirement. Steadily investing a few hundred dollars each month into high-performing stocks can create an enormous amount of wealth. One of the keys to finding stocks that can deliver decades of strong returns is focusing on those benefiting from megatrends. Few are as big and enduring as renewable energy and data, making Brookfield Renewable, Crown Castle, and NextEra Energy stand out as stocks that could mint their share of millionaires in the decades ahead.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
$300 a Month in These 3 Stocks Could Make You a Millionaire by Retirement
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n$300 a Month in These 3 Stocks Could Make You a Millionaire by Retirement\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-28 11:25 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Thanks to the wonders of compound interest, it doesn't take a lot of money to grow a million-dollar nest egg. Cathie Wood says 'they don't have the DNA for this brave new world' of electric cars","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2184859247","media":"Dow Jones","summary":"Electric vehicle makers are all the rage in 2021 and General Motors and Ford Motor have made tremend","content":"

\n
Electric vehicle makers are all the rage in 2021 and General Motors and Ford Motor have made tremendous strides in growing their EV businesses, but investment manager Cathie Wood says it may be too little, too late for those traditional car manufacturers.
\n
Wood said that GM and Ford are seeing stellar stock performances this year, with investors giving them some credit for their attempts to shift from internal combustion engines, or ICE, to electric vehicles. But JPMorgan is optimistic and sees upside ahead.
\n
Since the release of Amazon’s most recent earnings report, investors have watched shares of the cloud and e-commerce giant tank by 11%. Amazon stock underperformed an already weak S&P 500 by three percentage points over the period, leaving some to question: is AMZN still a good investment?
\n
According to experts at JPMorgan (JPM), the answer is yes. Today, the Amazon Maven presents the main reasons why five-star rated analyst Doug Anmuth believes that Amazon stock is about to surge, producing an estimated 29% in gains through 2022.
\n
Figure 1: J.P. Morgan offices in Hong Kong.
\n
Getting back on track
\n
As the Amazon Maven mentioned recently, the impact of the pandemic on shopping habits led analysts to overestimate Amazon’s revenues for the current year. This is the very first reason why JPMorgan believes that AMZN will get a green light to climb again: “[the stock is heading] closer to the last quarter of difficult COVID-19 comps in the first quarter of 2022\", which should help to reset sentiment.
\n
Once 2020 results are left in the rearview mirror, the e-commerce company will face more realistic, non-pandemic-inflated projections. As mentioned by Mr. Anmuth himself, \"further downward revisions to 2022 profit estimates would help lower the bar and potentially create more of a clearing event”.
\n
Holiday upside
\n
Another reason why Mr. Anmuth believes Amazon stock will head higher is the beginning of the holiday season. Since the market has been so cautious towards AMZN lately, the stock has been trading at lower multiples than would otherwise be considered reasonable. The holidays, on the other hand, could be the bullish catalyst that investors need to own the stock again.
\n
Lastly, there is the potential for an increase in Prime subscription price in 2022. Considering an estimated 150 million US Prime members in 2021, a $20 dollar hike in annual fee would lead to an extra $3 billion heading towards Amazon’s coffers.
\n
At first glance, the figure may not seem like much, given Amazon’s revenues of $380 billion in 2020. However, keep in mind that nearly all the price increase would flow cleanly into Amazon’s operating income. On a 2020 basis, this would represent growth of nearly 15% in pre-tax profits.
\n
What do other experts say?
\n
Other reports published recently also support the bullish thesis. Mark Mahaney from Evercore ISI talked to 15 industry experts, including former Amazon employees, during the research firm’s Amazon Day Symposium. The analyst liked what he saw and issued a hefty $4,700 target price.
\n
Wolfe Research’s Deepak Mathivanan, on the other hand, lowered his price target on AMZN modestly to $3,850 from $3,900, despite maintaining an outperform rating. Sitting closer to the consensus price target is Goldman Sachs’ Eric Sheridan, who is bullish and believes that AMZN shares are worth $4,250.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
JPMorgan On Amazon Stock: 29% Upside Potential
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nJPMorgan On Amazon Stock: 29% Upside Potential\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-10-15 23:24 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Amazon stock has fallen victim of its own success: shares of the e-commerce giant have lagged the S&P 500 since its disappointing Q2 earnings day.
For example, investing $300 a month could grow into more than $1 million in 30 years if it can generate a 12% annual return. That's slightly better than the average stock market return over the last 50 years of nearly 11%. \nMany companies have a long history of beating the market. Three companies that appear likely to continue doing so in the decades ahead are Brookfield Renewable , Crown Castle International , and NextEra Energy . Because of that, $100 invested in each one every month could grow into a $1 million nest egg by retirement.\nBenefiting from a powerful megatrend\nBrookfield Renewable has enriched its investors over the years. Since its inception, the renewable energy producer has generated an annualized total return of 19%. The company had done that by investing billions of dollars into expanding its renewable energy portfolio. That has powered more than 10% annual growth in its cash flow per share, supporting 6% annual dividend increases over the last decade. \nHowever, Brookfield's best days appear to lie ahead. The global economy needs to invest trillions of dollars to decarbonize the energy sector over the next 30 years. That should enable Brookfield to continue to invest in expanding its renewable energy portfolio.\nThe company currently has 36 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in development. That's bigger than the company's current operating portfolio of about 21 GW. Combined with rising power rates, and its growing scale, these projects should support up to 11% annual cash flow per share growth through at least 2026. \nMeanwhile, Brookfield sees up to another 9% yearly boost from future acquisitions. Add that growing renewable-powered cash flow stream to the company's 3%-yielding dividend, and Brookfield appears to have the power to produce double-digit annual returns for decades to come. \nConnected to the data supercycle\nCrown Castle has been an exceptional value creator over the years. The infrastructure-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) has delivered a more than 13% annual total return over the two-plus decades since its initial public offering. \nA major driver of those returns has been the billions of dollars the company has poured into expanding its communications infrastructure portfolio. Over the last decade alone, the REIT spent $31 billion on acquisitions and capital expenditures (capex), powering 9% annual dividend growth since 2014. \nThe company still sees significant investment opportunities ahead. \nCrown Castle expects to grow its 3.2%-yielding dividend at a 7% to 8% annual rate in the near term. That suggests the company could deliver double-digit total returns in the coming years. \nPlugged into several growth catalysts\nNextEra Energy has also created an enormous amount of wealth for its investors over the years. \nA major catalyst has been the company's leadership in renewable energy. It has grown into one of the world's largest wind and solar energy producers. \nThat leadership should continue since it has one of the world's biggest backlogs of wind and solar energy development projects. In addition to tried-and-true technologies like wind and solar, NextEra is a leader in emerging technologies, including battery storage and green hydrogen. Meanwhile, it's tapping into other sources of growth like water infrastructure. Because of that, NextEra should have plenty of power to continue growing its earnings and dividend in the decades ahead.\nGrow rich slowly\nCompound interest can do wonders for your retirement. Steadily investing a few hundred dollars each month into high-performing stocks can create an enormous amount of wealth. One of the keys to finding stocks that can deliver decades of strong returns is focusing on those benefiting from megatrends. Contracts will be awarded no later than Sept. 13 with delivery to take place between Oct. 1 and Dec. 15, the Energy Department said.\n\"There's a perception that the government doesn't need the [SPR] like they used to because of the increase in U.S. production, so there's an expectation that we have money sitting in these oil caverns and the government wants to get their hands on it,\" Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at The Price Futures Group, told MarketWatch.\nIt's \"interesting we're willing to forgo our reserve at this point,\" he said. The Biden administration may be feeling the heat from higher gasoline prices and this is \"one way to cool off prices and potentially cool off gasoline prices.\"\nMeanwhile, some analysts said signs of resilience in the physical market for crude belied the carnage seen in the commodity futures market last week.\n\"The financial market rout is moving at an asymmetric downward pace to what the physical market is telling us,\" said Michael Tran, commodity analyst at RBC Capital Markets, in a note. \"Atlantic Basin marginal barrels, while off the recent highs, are not signaling a struggle as extreme as the financial price weakness.\"\nTran said that several marginal barrels in the North Sea were pricing at physical premiums not far off the highs of the year seen just two weeks ago.\n\"Most crudes are pricing softer, physically over the past week, but not in a fashion that would suggest distress. Headline fears of the delta variant and weak Chinese buying programs have weighed on the financial market for the past month, but the relative firmness in the physical market in prior weeks is indicative that other buyers are emerging to pick up the slack,\" he wrote.\nA surge in the U.S. dollar last week fed a selloff for commodities as a stronger greenback can make them more expensive to users of other currencies.\nBut the dollar backed off on Monday, with the ICE U.S. Dollar Index , a measure of the currency against a basket of six major rivals, down 0.6% after soaring last week to a nine-month high.\nInvestors also looked ahead to this week's monetary-policy symposium, which was set to be held in Jackson Hole, Wyo., but will take place virtually due to health concerns around the spread of the delta variant. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak Friday morning, with investors looking for clues to when(and if) the central bank will lay out a timetable for the tapering of its monthly asset purchases.\nSee:Investors look for Fed clues on tapering as Jackson Hole goes virtual because of delta variant\nRounding out action on Nymex Monday, September gasoline tacked on 4.9% to $2.12 a gallon and September heating oil rose 5.1% to nearly $2.01 a gallon.\nSeptember natural gas settled at nearly $3.95 per million British thermal units, up 2.4%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":8,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":864760386,"gmtCreate":1633149351691,"gmtModify":1633149352238,"author":{"id":"3569313801991301","authorId":"3569313801991301","name":"开开心心好心情的兄弟","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dff103551cc901aee1ee3b3d32ec232c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$what happen","listText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$what happen","text":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$what happen","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a8144d3d9ffc289f850358f58ac17dc5","width":"1080","height":"3422"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/864760386","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":9,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":868428484,"gmtCreate":1632701185948,"gmtModify":1632798536384,"author":{"id":"3569313801991301","authorId":"3569313801991301","name":"开开心心好心情的兄弟","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dff103551cc901aee1ee3b3d32ec232c","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"In the all made from china still the best. Key economic data will include the U.S. consumer price index for September, in the latest print on the state of inflation in the U.S. economy.
\n
Investors have been anxiously awaiting the start of the latest earnings season and bracing for a deceleration in corporate profit growth after a strong second quarter.
\n
S&P 500 earnings are expected to grow by 27.6% in aggregate for the third quarter, slowing sharply from the second quarter's nearly 90% growth rate, according to data from FactSet. Still, last quarter's results had been aided by easy comparisons to the pandemic-depressed profit levels of mid-2020. And at nearly 30%, the expected earnings growth rate for the third quarter would still be the third-fastest pace for the index since 2010.
\n
Traders are especially looking to see that supply-side challenges and rising input and labor costs weighed heavily on corporate profits for the latest quarter. Nearly two dozen S&P 500 companies — including major names like FedEx (FDX) and Nike (NKE) — have already reported third-quarter results, giving hints about the magnitude of the margin pressure being exerted by supply-side challenges.
\n
\"Supply chain disruptions and costs have been cited by the highest number companies in the index to date as a factor that either had a negative impact on earnings or revenues in Q3, or is expected to have a negative impact on earnings or revenues in future quarters,\" FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note on Friday. Of the 21 S&P 500 component companies that have reported results so far, 15 of them have discussed negative impacts from these factors, Butters added.
\n
\"After supply chain disruptions, labor shortages and costs (14), COVID costs and impacts (11), and transportation and freight costs (11) have been discussed by the highest number of S&P 500 companies,\" he added.
\n
For many companies, the specter of eventual interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve and the present inflationary environment has presented a slew of concerns over higher input and borrowing costs. But for the Big Banks, a higher interest-rate environment generally translates into stronger profits in their key lending businesses, allowing them to command higher rates on loans.
\n
The major U.S. banks including JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) are each set to report quarterly results this week. Heading into these results, many analysts have said they expect to see net interest margins expand alongside the creep higher in benchmark interest rates this year. And as the economic recovery chugs along, banks may further release loan loss reserves they set aside to protect against potential defaults and nonpayments over the course of the pandemic.
\n
\"We expect 3Q21 EPS [earnings per share] results to be stronger on a year-over-year basis as loan loss reserves continue to be released albeit at a lower level than 1Q/2Q21 and the group posts positive revenue growth,\" RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy wrote in a note last week.
\n
\"Key themes that we expect to see in the results include: (1) more signs of net interest margin (NIM) stabilization; (2) growth in the consumer loan, residential mortgage and commercial real estate mortgage portfolios; and (3) positive outlook guidance on credit, loan growth (especially commercial & industrial loans,) and NIM,\" he added. \"Lastly, commentary on core operating expenses should be listened to carefully to see if the banks are starting to feel non-incentive compensation wage pressure.\"
\n
According to Matt O'Connor, Deutsche Bank managing director of U.S. banks equity research, banks still have considerable room for loan growth with the economic recovery under way. Total industry loans are still 1% below pre-pandemic levels from the fourth quarter of 2019, he said, and are down by an even more significant mid-single-digits percentage when excluding loans made via the COVID-era Paycheck Protection Program.
\n
“We remain positive on bank stocks given a likely multi-year positive backdrop for credit, interest rates and loan growth,” O'Connor wrote in a note. “It’s hard to be too negative on the banks given a generally favorable macroeconomic outlook among most (despite some slower activity more recently) and the prospect for higher rates and faster loan growth, though was we’ve noted before the timing/magnitude of this remains unclear.”
\n
For the year-to-date, the financials sector remains the second-best performer in the S&P 500 after the energy sector, climbing more than 30% so far in 2021.
\n
Consumer price index
\n
One of the most closely watched economic reports this week will be the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index, due for release on Wednesday.
\n
The report is expected to show consumer prices rose at roughly the same month-on-month and annual rate in September as in August, reinforcing the persistent inflationary pressures present even as the economic recovery rolls on.
\n
Consensus economists are looking for the consumer price index to jump by 0.3% in September over the previous month and by 5.3% over the prior year.
\n
At least some of that increase will likely come as a result of jumping energy prices, with crude oil and natural gas prices spiking amid elevated demand and tight supply over the past month. However, even excluding more volatile food and energy prices, the CPI likely still rose at a 4.0% annual pace.
\n
The so-called core measure of CPI has moderated from June's 4.5% annual clip, or the fastest rate since 1991, but has still held markedly higher compared to pre-pandemic standards. Some of the categories mostly closely associated with the economic reopening have seen prices pull back after initial surges in the spring and early summer — but not by enough to bring down the overall level of CPI.
\n
“The key takeaway from the upcoming consumer price index will be how broadly across categories we are seeing price increases,\" Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate, said in an email on Friday. \"While used car prices, airfares, and lodging have all pulled back a bit, underscoring the idea that higher inflation might indeed be transitory, increases in others like shelter costs might just be heating up.”
\n
Other areas of the economy have also begun to show persistently heightened levels of inflation, with U.S. crude oil futures skyrocketing to their highest level since 2014 last week and commodity prices across the board moving higher. And last week's September jobs report also reflected a number of inflationary pressures in the labor market, with average hourly wages accelerating to the fastest year-over-year pace since February, and rise in the workweek taking place alongside a drop in labor force participation.
\n
\"We expect reopening effects to continue to fade, but the risk from supply constraints is likely to be longer-lasting than previously expected,\" High Frequency Economics' Rubeela Farooqi wrote in a note. \"That should provide ongoing support to goods prices, even as services inflation continues to revert to more typical trends on a normalization of activity.\"
\n
Economic calendar
\n
\n

Monday: No notable reports scheduled for release

\n

Tuesday: NFIB Small Business Optimism, September (99.5 expected, 100.1 during prior month); JOLTS Job Openings, August (10.938 million expected, 10.934 million during prior month)

\n

Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended Oct. 8 (-6.9% during prior week); Consumer price index, month-over-month, September (0.3% expected, 0.3% during prior month); CPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, September (0.2% expected, 0.1% during prior month); CPI year-over-year, September (5.3% expected, 5.3% during prior month); CPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, September (4.0% expected, 4.0% during prior month); Real Average Hourly earnings, year-over-year, September (-1.1% during prior month); Real Average Weekly earnings, year-over-year, September (-1.4% during prior month); FOMC meeting minutes

\n

Thursday: Initial jobless claims, week ended Oct. 9 (325,000 expected, 326,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended Oct. 2 (2.696 million expected, 2.714 million during prior week); Producer price index, month-over-month, September (0.6% expected, 0.7% during prior month); PPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, September (0.5% expected, 0.6% during prior month); PPI, year-over-year, September (8.7% expected, 8.3% during prior month); PPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year. Key economic data will include the U.S. consumer price index for September, in the latest print on the state of inflation in the U.S. economy.\nInvestors have been anxiously awaiting the start of the latest earnings season and bracing for a deceleration in corporate profit growth after a strong second quarter.\nS&P 500 earnings are expected to grow by 27.6% in aggregate for the third quarter, slowing sharply from the second quarter's nearly 90% growth rate, according to data from FactSet. Still, last quarter's results had been aided by easy comparisons to the pandemic-depressed profit levels of mid-2020. And at nearly 30%, the expected earnings growth rate for the third quarter would still be the third-fastest pace for the index since 2010.\nTraders are especially looking to see that supply-side challenges and rising input and labor costs weighed heavily on corporate profits for the latest quarter. Nearly two dozen S&P 500 companies — including major names like FedEx (FDX) and Nike (NKE) — have already reported third-quarter results, giving hints about the magnitude of the margin pressure being exerted by supply-side challenges.\n\"Supply chain disruptions and costs have been cited by the highest number companies in the index to date as a factor that either had a negative impact on earnings or revenues in Q3, or is expected to have a negative impact on earnings or revenues in future quarters,\" FactSet's John Butters wrote in a note on Friday. Of the 21 S&P 500 component companies that have reported results so far, 15 of them have discussed negative impacts from these factors, Butters added.\n\"After supply chain disruptions, labor shortages and costs (14), COVID costs and impacts (11), and transportation and freight costs (11) have been discussed by the highest number of S&P 500 companies,\" he added.\nFor many companies, the specter of eventual interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve and the present inflationary environment has presented a slew of concerns over higher input and borrowing costs. But for the Big Banks, a higher interest-rate environment generally translates into stronger profits in their key lending businesses, allowing them to command higher rates on loans.\nThe major U.S. banks including JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) are each set to report quarterly results this week. Heading into these results, many analysts have said they expect to see net interest margins expand alongside the creep higher in benchmark interest rates this year. And as the economic recovery chugs along, banks may further release loan loss reserves they set aside to protect against potential defaults and nonpayments over the course of the pandemic.\n\"We expect 3Q21 EPS [earnings per share] results to be stronger on a year-over-year basis as loan loss reserves continue to be released albeit at a lower level than 1Q/2Q21 and the group posts positive revenue growth,\" RBC Capital Markets analyst Gerard Cassidy wrote in a note last week.\n\"Key themes that we expect to see in the results include: (1) more signs of net interest margin (NIM) stabilization; (2) growth in the consumer loan, residential mortgage and commercial real estate mortgage portfolios; and (3) positive outlook guidance on credit, loan growth (especially commercial & industrial loans,) and NIM,\" he added. \"Lastly, commentary on core operating expenses should be listened to carefully to see if the banks are starting to feel non-incentive compensation wage pressure.\"\nAccording to Matt O'Connor, Deutsche Bank managing director of U.S. banks equity research, banks still have considerable room for loan growth with the economic recovery under way. Total industry loans are still 1% below pre-pandemic levels from the fourth quarter of 2019, he said, and are down by an even more significant mid-single-digits percentage when excluding loans made via the COVID-era Paycheck Protection Program.\n“We remain positive on bank stocks given a likely multi-year positive backdrop for credit, interest rates and loan growth,” O'Connor wrote in a note. “It’s hard to be too negative on the banks given a generally favorable macroeconomic outlook among most (despite some slower activity more recently) and the prospect for higher rates and faster loan growth, though was we’ve noted before the timing/magnitude of this remains unclear.”\nFor the year-to-date, the financials sector remains the second-best performer in the S&P 500 after the energy sector, climbing more than 30% so far in 2021.\nConsumer price index\nOne of the most closely watched economic reports this week will be the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index, due for release on Wednesday.\nThe report is expected to show consumer prices rose at roughly the same month-on-month and annual rate in September as in August, reinforcing the persistent inflationary pressures present even as the economic recovery rolls on.\nConsensus economists are looking for the consumer price index to jump by 0.3% in September over the previous month and by 5.3% over the prior year.\nAt least some of that increase will likely come as a result of jumping energy prices, with crude oil and natural gas prices spiking amid elevated demand and tight supply over the past month. However, even excluding more volatile food and energy prices, the CPI likely still rose at a 4.0% annual pace.\nThe so-called core measure of CPI has moderated from June's 4.5% annual clip, or the fastest rate since 1991, but has still held markedly higher compared to pre-pandemic standards. Some of the categories mostly closely associated with the economic reopening have seen prices pull back after initial surges in the spring and early summer — but not by enough to bring down the overall level of CPI.\n“The key takeaway from the upcoming consumer price index will be how broadly across categories we are seeing price increases,\" Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate, said in an email on Friday. \"While used car prices, airfares, and lodging have all pulled back a bit, underscoring the idea that higher inflation might indeed be transitory, increases in others like shelter costs might just be heating up.”\nOther areas of the economy have also begun to show persistently heightened levels of inflation, with U.S. crude oil futures skyrocketing to their highest level since 2014 last week and commodity prices across the board moving higher. And last week's September jobs report also reflected a number of inflationary pressures in the labor market, with average hourly wages accelerating to the fastest year-over-year pace since February, and rise in the workweek taking place alongside a drop in labor force participation.\n\"We expect reopening effects to continue to fade, but the risk from supply constraints is likely to be longer-lasting than previously expected,\" High Frequency Economics' Rubeela Farooqi wrote in a note. \"That should provide ongoing support to goods prices, even as services inflation continues to revert to more typical trends on a normalization of activity.\"\nEconomic calendar\n\nMonday: No notable reports scheduled for release \nTuesday: NFIB Small Business Optimism, September (99.5 expected, 100.1 during prior month); JOLTS Job Openings, August (10.938 million expected, 10.934 million during prior month)\nWednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended Oct. 8 (-6.9% during prior week); Consumer price index, month-over-month, September (0.3% expected, 0.3% during prior month); CPI excluding food and energy, month-over-month, September (0.2% expected, 0.1% during prior month); CPI year-over-year, September (5.3% expected, 5.3% during prior month); CPI excluding food and energy, year-over-year, September (4.0% expected, 4.0% during prior month); Real Average Hourly earnings, year-over-year, September (-1.1% during prior month); Real Average Weekly earnings, year-over-year, September (-1.4% during prior month); FOMC meeting minutes\nThursday: Initial jobless claims, week ended Oct.
