Here's why.</p>\n<h2>AMC Entertainment</h2>\n<p>Perhaps, the most important thing investors should know about AMC is something the company itself mentioned in a recent 8-K Filing: \"We believe that recent volatility and our current market prices reflect [dynamics] unrelated to our underlying business.\"</p>\n<p>The statement goes on to caution investors against buying stock unless they are prepared to <i>lose all or a significant portion</i> of their investment. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.</p>\n<p>If you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-third&nbsp;of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Understandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.</p>\n<p>During the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days&nbsp;-- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Put simply, the company is facing more competition than ever before.</p>\n<p>As a final thought, in a recent 10-Q Filing with the SEC, AMC explained that it will need to reach 85% of pre-pandemic attendance levels by the fourth quarter of 2021 in order to comply with minimum liquidity requirements. If that doesn't happen, bankruptcy would likely be the next step, which means shareholders would \"suffer a total loss of their investment.\"</p>\n<h2>Cloudflare</h2>\n<p>Cloudflare is a cloud services provider. Its platform helps clients secure and accelerate the performance of websites and applications. For example, it recently launched Cloudflare One, a network-as-a-service solution designed to replace outdated corporate networks.</p>\n<p>Traditionally, enterprises have taken a castle-and-moat approach to network security. All sensitive data was stored in a central location, and firewall appliances and internet gateways&nbsp;were used to filter incoming and outgoing traffic. This was both costly and inefficient, often resulting in lag time for remote workers.</p>\n<p>By comparison, Cloudflare One acts as a secure access service edge&nbsp;(SASE). Rather than sending traffic through a central hub, SASE is a distributed network architecture. This means employees connect to Cloudflare's network, where traffic is filtered and security policies are enforced, then traffic is routed to the internet or the corporate network.</p>\n<p>This creates a fast, secure experience for employees, allowing them to access corporate resources and applications&nbsp;from any location, on any device. Moreover, according to research firm Gartner, 40%&nbsp;of enterprises will have plans to adopt SASE by 2024, up from just 1% in 2018. That radical shift gives Cloudflare a big opportunity.</p>\n<p>More importantly, the company is executing on that opportunity. Here's why.\nAMC Entertainment\nPerhaps, the most important thing investors should know about AMC is something the company itself mentioned in a recent 8-K Filing: \"We believe that recent volatility and our current market prices reflect [dynamics] unrelated to our underlying business.\"\nThe statement goes on to caution investors against buying stock unless they are prepared to lose all or a significant portion of their investment. Of course, you should never invest money you can't afford to lose, but this dire warning should still rattle current and prospective shareholders.\nIf you're not convinced, let's look at AMC's financial results. Last year, attendance and revenue fell 79% and 77%, respectively. And despite reopening roughly one-third of its international theaters and two-thirds of its domestic theaters, its performance has actually worsened this year. Attendance and revenue plunged 89% and 84%, respectively, during the first quarter.\nUnderstandably, some investors are hoping things improve as the economy reopens. But that may be too late -- the competitive landscape has already shifted dramatically.\nDuring the pandemic, streaming services like HBO Max and Peacock went live, Disney+ started taking titles directly to consumers, and Universal Studios cut the theatrical exclusivity window to 17 days -- prior to the pandemic, AMC retained exclusive rights for about 90 days. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.</p>\n<p>The reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.</p>\n<p>The government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.</p>\n<p>What should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.</p>\n<p><b>Rising yields</b></p>\n<p>Remember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452%&nbsp;moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.</p>\n<p>“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>That’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.</p>\n<p><b>Fed tapering</b></p>\n<p>Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee&nbsp;(FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. But this isn’t actually true.</p>\n<p>Yes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.</p>\n<p>“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”</p>\n<p>Looking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&amp;P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&amp;P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.</p>\n<p><b>Your five-point game plan</b></p>\n<p><b>1. Do not go to “defensives”</b></p>\n<p>When people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.</p>\n<p>“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”</p>\n<p><b>2. Go with companies that benefit from growth</b></p>\n<p>Since rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. Do not get out of stocks</b></p>\n<p>If you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.</p>\n<p>“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”</p>\n<p>Market timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.</p>\n<p><b>4. Do not own bonds</b></p>\n<p>Bond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. So don’t own bonds, whose prices fall when yields rise — unless you simply plan to hold to maturity to collect the income.</p>\n<p><b>5. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.</p>\n<p>The reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.</p>\n<p>The government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.</p>\n<p>What should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.</p>\n<p><b>Rising yields</b></p>\n<p>Remember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452%&nbsp;moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.</p>\n<p>“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>That’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.</p>\n<p><b>Fed tapering</b></p>\n<p>Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee&nbsp;(FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.</p>\n<p>“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.</p>\n<p>“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.</p>\n<p>He thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.</p>\n<p>As we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&amp;P 500 SPX,+0.19%,&nbsp;the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04%&nbsp;and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.</p>\n<p><b>How to prepare</b></p>\n<p>When considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.</p>\n<p>The consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.</p>\n<p>Yes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.</p>\n<p>“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”</p>\n<p>Looking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&amp;P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Assuming the S&amp;P 500 is at current levels or a little bit lower, that would bring the index’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio down to 18-19 — which is near or below the average since 1990. “That sets up the next leg of the bull market,” he says.</p>\n<p><b>Your five-point game plan</b></p>\n<p><b>1. Do not go to “defensives”</b></p>\n<p>When people see stock market turbulence, the knee-jerk reaction is to go for the “stability” of defensive names like utilities and consumer staples. But that would be a mistake. You want to go to defensives when the economy is slowing or contracting, not when it is strong. Another problem is that defensive names pay yield. So, like bonds, they get hit by rising interest rates, which devalue dividends — and dividend-paying stocks and bonds.</p>\n<p>“The best way to protect yourself is to tie your portfolio to the overheated economy. That is where the best profit growth and profit leverage is,” says Paulsen. “You do not get that with defensives.”</p>\n<p><b>2. Go with companies that benefit from growth</b></p>\n<p>Since rapid economic growth is causing the tapering — and the growth is usually not killed off by tightening — stocks linked to growth typically are the best place to be. Do not get out of stocks</b></p>\n<p>If you think a selloff is coming, it might be tempting to try to get out of stocks right before that, to buy back after the weakness happens. But this is a lot harder than you think. In fact, it is almost impossible to get the timing right, say market veterans.</p>\n<p>“You have to make two smart decisions,” says Yardeni. “You have to get out just before the correction and then you have to decide when to get back in. I don’t know of too many people that can do that consistently.”</p>\n<p>Market timers often get out and don’t get back in, and they miss the next leg up. “You can get yourself into trouble trying to avoid the correction,” says Paulsen.</p>\n<p><b>4. Do not own bonds</b></p>\n<p>Bond yields will be 2% or higher by the end of year. Both JPMorgan Chase JPM,-0.07%&nbsp;and Bank of America BAC,+0.41%&nbsp;are up over twice as much as the S&amp;P 500 since I suggested them in my stock letter last August. But they still look attractive. Inflation will remain elevated enough to shake up the stock market, possibly causing a selloff as much as 15%. You need to prepare now.\nThe reason: Persistently high inflation will move the 10-year Treasury yield to 2% and get the Federal Reserve to start tapering its stimulus by the end of the year. Both will rattle the stock market.\nThe government said June 10 that the cost of living surged in May and drove the pace of inflation to a 13-year high of 5%.\nWhat should you do? Probably the opposite of what you are thinking. Before we get to that, here is a look at the two key events for stocks — in the bond market and at the Fed — between today and the end of the year.\nRising yields\nRemember how the stock market freaked out earlier this year when the 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y,1.452% moved up to around 1.7%? Well, expect a repeat. Only worse.\n“We suspect that inflation in the U.S. will prove more persistent than investors currently appear to anticipate,” says Capital Economics economist Franziska Palmas, citing the tight labor market and wage growth. Her research group puts the 10-year yield at 2.25% by the end of this year, and 2.5% by the end of 2022.\nThat’ll be a big move from the current level of 1.5%. Stock investors tend to panic when interest rates rise a lot.\nFed tapering\nFed Chairman Jerome Powell has downplayed the need for tapering the central bank’s bond purchases to keep yields low. But half of the 12 members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) have recently said they’re ready to start talking about tapering. The FOMC is the Fed branch that sets monetary policy.\n“It will be increasingly hard for Powell to claim the economy needs to make ‘substantial further progress’ toward achieving maximum employment before the Fed starts talking about talking about tapering,” says Ed Yardeni, author of Predicting the Markets and head of Yardeni Research. Powell has repeatedly said the Fed is awaiting “substantial further progress” in the economy before terminating its stimulus.\n“Given the performance of the economy, it is reasonable to expect they will start to taper before end of year, and a few months later they will start to raise the federal funds rate,” predicts Yardeni.\nHe thinks the Fed will announce a decision to start tapering in its July meeting. Tapering refers to a reduction in bond purchases by the Fed. This tightens the money supply to put the brakes on growth. Once purchases go to zero, the Fed moves on to cutting rates.\nAs we know, tapering causes a “taper tantrum” in the stock market, meaning a sharp selloff in indices like the S&P 500 SPX,+0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.04% and Nasdaq COMP,+0.35%.\nHow to prepare\nWhen considering how to position for the probable selloff caused by rising bond yields and Fed tightening, the key things to remember is why these things are happening in the first place, and what history tells us about how stocks behave.\nThe consensus view is that tapering and rising bond yields kill off economic growth and the bull market in stocks. But this isn’t actually true.\nYes, initially, tightening can make stocks fall — or churn sideways, at best. But then stocks shake it off and move higher as the bull market continues. This makes sense, because the tightening is happening for good reasons that help companies — strong economic growth. This pushes earnings a lot higher, which resets valuations lower — back down to levels investors feel comfortable with.\n“Tapering is part and parcel of a recovery,” says Leuthold market strategist Jim Paulsen. “It is a response to successful policy and a rebound in the economy. It is a natural part of the bull market that allows the market to go higher. It’s a healthy development.”\nLooking through all the market fireworks that may lie ahead, Paulsen thinks underlying economic growth will push S&P 500 earnings up to $220 by the end of the year. Sundial Growers</h3>\n<p>Earlier this year, Sundial Growers' stock hit a high of $3.96. And while it's nowhere near that price today, the bullish activity that retail investors and speculators helped generate around Sundial allowed the company to raise millions through multiple share offerings. On May 7, Sundial reported an unrestricted cash balance of 753 million Canadian dollars, up from just CA$60 million at the start of the year.&nbsp;Since then, the company has been busy wheeling and dealing, even setting up a joint venture with SunStream Bancorp to pursue investments in the cannabis sector.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, I'm not a fan of Sundial for its existing business; its revenue has been falling and sales of CA$57 million over the past 12 months are less than the CA$72 million <b>OrganiGram</b> has generated over a similar time frame. And yet, Sundial has twice the market cap. But cash can create opportunities for the business. As Sundial acquires or invests in other cannabis companies, it can become a much stronger and more stable investment over the long run.</p>\n<h3>2. GameStop</h3>\n<p>The poster child for meme stocks is, without a doubt, GameStop. The video game retailer looked like its future was doomed in an era where people are making more of their purchases online. But there's hope for the company, with its new Chairman Ryan Cohen leading a transition toward e-commerce and away from brick-and-mortar stores. GameStop is also getting in on the non-fungible token (NFT) hype, recently launching a new site dedicated to NFTs and announcing that it is looking to hire a variety of positions for the new area of its business.</p>\n<p>Like Sundial, GameStop took advantage of its growing popularity -- its shares have soared more than 1,300% year to date (the pot stock has risen 140% while the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> is up just 12%) -- and it recently issued 3.5 million new shares to raise $551 million. All that additional cash can help fuel its transformation and allow the company to pursue other growth opportunities as they come up.</p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> big risk with GameStop, however, is in determining what price to pay for the stock. While it may be appealing to buy if it falls below $150 (which is around its recent lows), it closed last week at $100 higher than that price. Even if you decide that GameStop is worth the risk, it's important to have a price in mind as this fast-moving stock has proven to be unpredictable this year.</p>\n<h3>3. AMC</h3>\n<p>Shares of AMC have skyrocketed even higher this year and are up more than 2,300%. However, the company is also the riskiest <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> on this list. It faces significant challenges ahead with long-term debt totaling more than $5.4 billion. And with cash and cash equivalents of just $813 million as of March 31,&nbsp;it would have looked like an unlikely scenario for AMC to dig itself out of this hole. But its strong share price could help alleviate some of those concerns.</p>\n<p>On June 3, the company announced that it brought in $587 million from a new offering. That brings the total additional equity it has raised during the quarter to $1.2 billion. AMC is now exploring possible acquisitions within its industry, which could lure in more growth-oriented investors. Meanwhile, it is also seeking shareholder support to issue 25 million more shares.</p>\n<p>Now that the economy is opening back up and people are back to visiting movie theaters, the near future looks brighter for the company, especially with all that extra equity and the possible growth opportunities ahead. While there is still significant risk here -- AMC has burned through $1.3 billion in cash from its day-to-day operating activities over the past 12 months -- there is also potential for the company to rise in value. However, a lot of AMC's long-term success will ultimately depend on what opportunities it ends up pursuing, its debt load, and if demand returns to pre-pandemic levels. These are still some very big question marks today.</p>\n<p>But even if you're a risk taker, like with GameStop, you'll want to be careful with what price you pay for this incredibly volatile stock. Meme stocks are risky. Any stock that is volatile enough that it can jump by more than 20% in a given day can send your portfolio on a wild roller coaster ride. However, that doesn't mean you should always avoid these types of stocks.\nOver the long term, stocks such as Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL), GameStop (NYSE:GME), and AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) could turn out to be great investments. Although there is considerable risk with investing in these stocks, the potential returns may be significant.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Sundial Growers\nEarlier this year, Sundial Growers' stock hit a high of $3.96. And while it's nowhere near that price today, the bullish activity that retail investors and speculators helped generate around Sundial allowed the company to raise millions through multiple share offerings. On May 7, Sundial reported an unrestricted cash balance of 753 million Canadian dollars, up from just CA$60 million at the start of the year. Since then, the company has been busy wheeling and dealing, even setting up a joint venture with SunStream Bancorp to pursue investments in the cannabis sector.\nAdmittedly, I'm not a fan of Sundial for its existing business; its revenue has been falling and sales of CA$57 million over the past 12 months are less than the CA$72 million OrganiGram has generated over a similar time frame. And yet, Sundial has twice the market cap. But cash can create opportunities for the business. As Sundial acquires or invests in other cannabis companies, it can become a much stronger and more stable investment over the long run.\n2. GameStop\nThe poster child for meme stocks is, without a doubt, GameStop. The video game retailer looked like its future was doomed in an era where people are making more of their purchases online. But there's hope for the company, with its new Chairman Ryan Cohen leading a transition toward e-commerce and away from brick-and-mortar stores. GameStop is also getting in on the non-fungible token (NFT) hype, recently launching a new site dedicated to NFTs and announcing that it is looking to hire a variety of positions for the new area of its business.\nLike Sundial, GameStop took advantage of its growing popularity -- its shares have soared more than 1,300% year to date (the pot stock has risen 140% while the S&P 500 is up just 12%) -- and it recently issued 3.5 million new shares to raise $551 million. All that additional cash can help fuel its transformation and allow the company to pursue other growth opportunities as they come up.\nThe one big risk with GameStop, however, is in determining what price to pay for the stock. While it may be appealing to buy if it falls below $150 (which is around its recent lows), it closed last week at $100 higher than that price. Even if you decide that GameStop is worth the risk, it's important to have a price in mind as this fast-moving stock has proven to be unpredictable this year.\n3. AMC\nShares of AMC have skyrocketed even higher this year and are up more than 2,300%. However, the company is also the riskiest one on this list. It faces significant challenges ahead with long-term debt totaling more than $5.4 billion. And with cash and cash equivalents of just $813 million as of March 31, it would have looked like an unlikely scenario for AMC to dig itself out of this hole. But its strong share price could help alleviate some of those concerns.\nOn June 3, the company announced that it brought in $587 million from a new offering. That brings the total additional equity it has raised during the quarter to $1.2 billion. AMC is now exploring possible acquisitions within its industry, which could lure in more growth-oriented investors. Meanwhile, it is also seeking shareholder support to issue 25 million more shares.\nNow that the economy is opening back up and people are back to visiting movie theaters, the near future looks brighter for the company, especially with all that extra equity and the possible growth opportunities ahead. While there is still significant risk here -- AMC has burned through $1.3 billion in cash from its day-to-day operating activities over the past 12 months -- there is also potential for the company to rise in value. However, a lot of AMC's long-term success will ultimately depend on what opportunities it ends up pursuing, its debt load, and if demand returns to pre-pandemic levels. These are still some very big question marks today.\nBut even if you're a risk taker, like with GameStop, you'll want to be careful with what price you pay for this incredibly volatile stock.
