Don’t be surprised if the stock market keeps on rising.
\n
With June coming to an end, the S&P 500 finished the first half of 2021 with a gain of 14.4%. Since 1998, only 2019’s 17.4% first-half surge has been larger.
\n
The market got a boost from Covid-19 vaccinations, which have helped the U.S. economy reopen, while trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus have helped shore up demand. The gains continued even as concerns about inflation have increased speculation that the Federal Reserve would be forced to take steps to slow the economy.
\n
The combination of big gains and a more hawkish Fed have raised concerns that the market has become too complacent. If inflation continues to run hot for long enough, the central bank could be forced to act more quickly than the market expects—and cause stocks to tumble. Others worry that U.S. economic growth could slow faster than investors anticipate, causing a pullback in the process.
\n
For those who take that view, there is no better time to back away from the stock market than the present. History suggests otherwise.
\n
Since 1979, the S&P 500 has gained 10% or more 14 times during the first half of the year, and the index has gone on to average a 6.3% gain over the second half of the year. The S&P 500 dropped 1.9% in the second half of 1983 and 3.5% during the last six months of 1986.
\n
The one exception was the last six months of 1987 when the index fell 19% during the second half of the year. That period included Black Monday, when the S&P 500 dropped 20% in one day, still a record loss. While selling linked to so-called portfolio insurance was ultimately blamed for the size and speed of the loss, the second half of 1987 was a period of rising bond yields and high stock-market valuations, just like the first half of 2021.
\n
Still, the market has been acting like it wants to go higher, not lower. Pullbacks, a normal event in the midst of bull runs, have been mild in 2021, with the largest drops being less than 4%. “What the [S&P 500] has done throughout 2021 is pick itself up when and where it has needed to, maintaining an uptrend all along,” writes Frank Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet.
\n
That 6.3% average second-half rise would push the S&P 500’s full-year gain to around 23%. The companies had halted trading on Thursday.\nAt 9.40am, Keppel extended its gains, trading up 6.3 per cent at $5.43. Sembmarine, the most heavily traded stock by volume, was down 18.9 per cent at 1.55 cents, with 319,000 shares trading hands.\nThe two companies on Thursday signed a non-binding non-binding agreement to enter into exclusive talks with the aim of merging Keppel's offshore and marine arm (Keppel O&M) and Sembmarine. This is intended to create a combined entity that is better positioned to compete for contracts in offshore renewable energy.\nThe move comes amid an extended period of low oil prices and persistent disruptions in the oil and gas sector, such as manpower shortages and reductions in demand for rigs by oil majors.\nIf a merger ensues, Keppel says it expects to receive shares in the combined entity, which will remain listed on the Singapore Exchange. Keppel intends to distribute all these shares to its shareholders. It will also receive cash totalling $500 million.\nMeawnhile, in a move expected to immediately depress Sembmarine's shares from the dilution effect, the company separately announced on Thursday it will seek fresh funds via a fully underwritten $1.5 billion renounceable rights issue. In September last year, Sembmarine raised $2.1 billion in a similar exercise following its demerger from Sembcorp Industries.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":194,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":128290575,"gmtCreate":1624516846897,"gmtModify":1631887439098,"author":{"id":"3560834065076807","authorId":"3560834065076807","name":"J999","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f9f1800d3a366281ffecc1298808c82","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3560834065076807","idStr":"3560834065076807"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Finally","listText":"Finally","text":"Finally","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/128290575","repostId":"1187067912","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1187067912","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624513711,"share":"https://www.laohunote.com/m/news/1187067912?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-24 13:48","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Keppel, Sembcorp Marine in talks for marine services deal, sources say","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1187067912","media":"Reuters","summary":"(Reuters) -Temasek-backed Singapore conglomerate Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Marine are set to begin ta","content":"
(Reuters) -Temasek-backed Singapore conglomerate Keppel Corp and Sembcorp Marine are set to begin talks to explore combining their ailing offshore and marine (O&M) businesses, two sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.
\n
A potential deal would bring together one of the world’s largest offshore oil rig builders with smaller rival Sembcorp after the businesses were whiplashed by years of oversupply in the sector, sustained weakness in oil prices and a drop in new orders.
\n
“Consolidation is needed simply because of competition, and the need for bigger working capital to take on new and bigger projects,” said Joel Ng at KGI Securities. Both companies own a network of shipyards in Singapore and overseas, including in Brazil, and employ thousands of workers.\nTrading in shares of Keppel and Sembcorp, which both count Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings as their largest shareholder, was halted on Thursday pending announcements.\nSembcorp has a market value of S$2.4 billion ($1.8 billion), while Keppel, whose businesses include property and infrastructure, is valued at S$9.3 billion.\nKeppel declined comment while there was no immediate response from Sembcorp Marine to a Reuters query. Both companies are holding separate news conferences later on Thursday.\nThe sources said boards of both companies are meeting to begin discussions that could take many months and ultimately result in Keppel Corp hiving off its O&M business and combining it with Sembcorp Marine, the sources said.\nThe sources declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to media.\nMarkets have been expecting a much-needed consolidation in the rig-building sector as companies in the shipbuilding and marine sectors in markets such as South Korea and China have already joined forces amid a weak sector outlook.\nKeppel’s shares have lost around 15% over the past 12 months, while Sembcorp has tumbled 40%.\nLast year, Temasek scrapped a $3 billion move to raise its stake in Keppel and take control, following Keppel’s poor performance.\nThen this year, Keppel said it was exploring options for its O&M business, as part of the group’s 10-year strategy to refocus its portfolio on energy and environment, urban development, connectivity and asset management.\nMarket talk of a consolidation between the rig builders had first resurfaced in June 2020 when Sembcorp Industries, the former parent of Sembcorp Marine, unveiled plans to demerge its core business from the lossmaking rig builder.\nThen Temasek stepped in to support a $1.5 billion rights issue by Sembcorp Marine.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":52,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":123019620,"gmtCreate":1624403276960,"gmtModify":1631887439107,"author":{"id":"3560834065076807","authorId":"3560834065076807","name":"J999","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f9f1800d3a366281ffecc1298808c82","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3560834065076807","idStr":"3560834065076807"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Woah...","listText":"Woah...","text":"Woah...","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a6763e681400ed082c4d0f82cbbf7c4c","width":"1080","height":"1749"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/123019620","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":238,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":129586628,"gmtCreate":1624377737664,"gmtModify":1631891574451,"author":{"id":"3560834065076807","authorId":"3560834065076807","name":"J999","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f9f1800d3a366281ffecc1298808c82","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3560834065076807","idStr":"3560834065076807"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Awaiting","listText":"Awaiting","text":"Awaiting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/129586628","repostId":"1169498109","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":166,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":120491263,"gmtCreate":1624330697752,"gmtModify":1631891574450,"author":{"id":"3560834065076807","authorId":"3560834065076807","name":"J999","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0f9f1800d3a366281ffecc1298808c82","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3560834065076807","idStr":"3560834065076807"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/120491263","repostId":"1123368698","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1123368698","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624328854,"share":"https://www.laohunote.com/m/news/1123368698?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-22 10:27","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Will This Reverse Stock Split Be a Rare Winner?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1123368698","media":"fool","summary":"Reverse stock splits aren't generally seen as a good sign. To do this, let's compare the revenue growth trends of the key segments of the company with and without the results of the last four quarters.

The dynamics of the 'Online Stores' segment showed a qualitative breakthrough. But I think this is not even a basic scenario, but a pessimistic scenario.I present my comprehensive Amazon (AMZN) analysis in light of the results of the last quarter.#1 Price vs. GrowthFirst of all, let's assess whether we can statistically state that Amazon's growth has accelerated or slowed down in the last quarter. To do this, let's compare the revenue growth trends of the key segments of the company with and without the results of the last four quarters. The dynamics of the 'Online Stores' segment showed a qualitative breakthrough. Markets have calmed significantly in the past few days with the Cboe Volatility index down on Wednesday as wild swings in stock prices of GameStop and other social media favorites subsided and the retail trading frenzy faded. However, caution continues to dominate sentiment despite positive corporate earnings and firm signs of economic recovery. The Australian S&P/ASX 200 index lost 0.34% during early trade and Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.35%. The lackluster start to Asian trade followed a mixed Wall Street session with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.12%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.10%, but the Nasdaq Composite losing 0.02%. Supporting U.S. sentiment were strong earnings by technology giants Alphabet Inc and Amazon.com Inc.
