Tesla (TSLA) has achieved the eye watering market capitalisation of $1.141T, with a P/E ratio of 368, is because Elon Musk himself is a master of PR and marketing.</p>\n<p>Core to this theory is that supply and demand is what drives a share's price (whereas fundamental and perceived value is what drives the individual investor to buy or sell), and demand can be manipulated through awareness and PR efforts. I believe prices will revert back to fundamental value in the long run.</p>\n<p>I argue that this awareness effect applies more to retail investors than to more sophisticated investors or investment funds, though this would obviously have a flow-on effect on them.</p>\n<p>A more traditional example of this theory is how news and announcements affect share prices, albeit they are more closely tied to fundamental value.</p>\n<p><b>Subreddit WallStreetBets As A Catalyst</b></p>\n<p>The Reddit Community WallStreetBets (WSB) is infamous for its role in the January 2021 GameStop saga, which led to a huge price increase in the retail firm's share price after the Reddit community popularised day trading of the firm.</p>\n<p>WSB is a community of mostly retail traders, some with no formal investing education or prior experience, and utilising margin loans through trading apps like Robinhood (though more experienced traders are present and active in the subreddit) to invest in the financial markets.</p>\n<p>The GameStop saga may be (mostly) over now, but this community is still thriving. At the time of the GameStop saga, the community had less than 3m members, while today it has over 11.2m members.</p>\n<p>Given the almost 4X growth in community size thanks to the amount of attention generated in the GameStop saga, it's arguable that the community is more powerful than ever before in the day trading space.</p>\n<p><b>The Elon Musk/WSB Connection</b></p>\n<p>Musk is famously aware of, and following, the WSB subreddit,once tweeting to his 43m followers a link to the subreddit with the caption \"Gamestonk.\"</p>\n<p>Musk has also claimed that short sellers have a negative impact on the valuation of TSLA, and it's not hard to imagine how he might see WSB as a tool to affect the share price.</p>\n<p>Musk is regarded as a hero by the WSB community, who are very aware that he follows them, and often post memes or comments in a worshipful manner,declaring him a \"Meme Lord.\"</p>\n<p><b>Tracking WSB Community Sentiment</b></p>\n<p>Thanks to a site called Swaggy Stocks, we are able to track WSB sentiment towards TSLA and count TSLA mentions (and various other firms that get attention on the subreddit, such as the infamous GameStop (GME) short squeeze).</p>\n<p>If we take a look at a 1-year history of the TSLA share price vs WSB mentions and sentiment, a cursory glance reveals a general correlation between mentions and upward price activity.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f24f2a63740b288ba4dad63e8fdaed3f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"490\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p>Another clear trend is the overwhelming positive sentiment towards TSLA (and almost any other stock mentioned there) from the WSB community. Search many of these comments and posts, and you'll see the phrase \"Stonks only go up!\" appear across many, many posts.</p>\n<p><b>Do Other Mediums Have The Same Correlation?</b></p>\n<p>Swaggy Stocks also tracks TSLA mentions across more traditional news sources and other social media sites.</p>\n<p>Searching social media for discussion and due-diligence style posts, Swaggy Stocks is able to show the total number of mentions TSLA generates, to compare with WSB.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a1e518a39e21d05f04e11f43de66c6a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"593\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p>There appears to be a very similar correlation between broader social media mentions of TSLA and stock price activity, but it appears that this attention is reactionary rather than a lead indicator. It is, however, a confirmation of awareness of the stock following along with major price movements, up or down.</p>\n<p><b>What Trends Can We See?</b></p>\n<p>Looking at the two graphs of mentions vs stock price, the most prominent trend is how TSLA mentions, and discussion peaks mostly as major price spikes occur. It does not appear that mentions are a leading indicator, but perhaps a slow-down in mentions might indicate that any further major price movements are not to be expected.</p>\n<p>In my eyes, the more interesting time period (circled in red below) is where mentions of TSLA slowed considerably, and the stock price dwindled following the peak in mentions.</p>\n<p>I argue that in this instance, when the stock fell from $900 to $600, WSB retail investors attention was diverted from the firm and this halted the upward price movement, sending the stock backward towards it's true long-run fundamental value.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d5f5e7c4dafad1ac25fb02d09b089e56\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"490\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p><b>Does This Awareness Effect Apply To Other Stocks?</b></p>\n<p>Given GME was the beginning of notoriety for WSB, it's worth comparing the GME ticker to WSB sentiment to search for similar trends.</p>\n<p>Again, large price movements occur around the same time as WSB commentary spikes, and prices tend to drift lower as attention drifts away.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bcda7b46bafc07f02eaa854255c64d63\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"679\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p>Looking at a third firm, Apple (AAPL), to compare WSB activity with the largest market cap firm in the US, the correlation between mentions and price activity is much weaker, suggesting that there may be a limit to the WSB community's influence. While activity still follows price movements, there is also the possibility WSB is just simply not as interested in AAPL as it is in TSLA or GME.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af3145b857ea22dc2550227f9f93826b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"354\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Swaggy Stocks</span></p>\n<p><b>The Investment View: Results May Vary</b></p>\n<p>I would argue that WSB is not perhaps a leading indicator, but it does play a part in stock awareness and encourages new investors to enter the market.</p>\n<p>I would also argue that 11.2m retail investors is certainly a force to be reckoned with and worth paying attention to - perhaps not a guidance of which stock will boom next but rather which ones are overpriced or have peaked.</p>\n<p>Overall, there's a strong sense that stocks that receive attention from WSB undergo price volatility, and do drift back to their long-run fundamental value given enough time.</p>\n<p>Perhaps it's a case of, if WSB is promoting the stock, you're already too late.</p>\n<p><b>So What Does This Mean For TSLA?</b></p>\n<p>Coming full circle back to TSLA, and reviewing their WSB sentiment chart, I feel there is strong argument to be made that the stock is over-priced due to the presence of retail traders.</p>\n<p>However, monitoring WSB activity may give investors a helpful indicator of when TSLA may be about to experience a price correction as retail investor's attention is drawn away from the firm.</p>\n<p>With that said, Elon Musk remains a variable worth watching given his awareness of the subreddit and its effect on the market, and he has the platform to drive attention back onto TSLA as he sees fit.</p>\n<p><b>The Value Of A Mention</b></p>\n<p>It's hard to place a quantifiable value on what a mention on WSB is worth to a firm, as individually they are probably worth close to $0. I believe prices will revert back to fundamental value in the long run.\nI argue that this awareness effect applies more to retail investors than to more sophisticated investors or investment funds, though this would obviously have a flow-on effect on them.\nA more traditional example of this theory is how news and announcements affect share prices, albeit they are more closely tied to fundamental value.\nSubreddit WallStreetBets As A Catalyst\nThe Reddit Community WallStreetBets (WSB) is infamous for its role in the January 2021 GameStop saga, which led to a huge price increase in the retail firm's share price after the Reddit community popularised day trading of the firm.\nWSB is a community of mostly retail traders, some with no formal investing education or prior experience, and utilising margin loans through trading apps like Robinhood (though more experienced traders are present and active in the subreddit) to invest in the financial markets.\nThe GameStop saga may be (mostly) over now, but this community is still thriving. At the time of the GameStop saga, the community had less than 3m members, while today it has over 11.2m members.\nGiven the almost 4X growth in community size thanks to the amount of attention generated in the GameStop saga, it's arguable that the community is more powerful than ever before in the day trading space.\nThe Elon Musk/WSB Connection\nMusk is famously aware of, and following, the WSB subreddit,once tweeting to his 43m followers a link to the subreddit with the caption \"Gamestonk.\"\nMusk has also claimed that short sellers have a negative impact on the valuation of TSLA, and it's not hard to imagine how he might see WSB as a tool to affect the share price.\nMusk is regarded as a hero by the WSB community, who are very aware that he follows them, and often post memes or comments in a worshipful manner,declaring him a \"Meme Lord.\"\nTracking WSB Community Sentiment\nThanks to a site called Swaggy Stocks, we are able to track WSB sentiment towards TSLA and count TSLA mentions (and various other firms that get attention on the subreddit, such as the infamous GameStop (GME) short squeeze).\nIf we take a look at a 1-year history of the TSLA share price vs WSB mentions and sentiment, a cursory glance reveals a general correlation between mentions and upward price activity.\nSource: Swaggy Stocks\nAnother clear trend is the overwhelming positive sentiment towards TSLA (and almost any other stock mentioned there) from the WSB community. Search many of these comments and posts, and you'll see the phrase \"Stonks only go up!\" appear across many, many posts.\nDo Other Mediums Have The Same Correlation?\nSwaggy Stocks also tracks TSLA mentions across more traditional news sources and other social media sites.\nSearching social media for discussion and due-diligence style posts, Swaggy Stocks is able to show the total number of mentions TSLA generates, to compare with WSB.\nSource: Swaggy Stocks\nThere appears to be a very similar correlation between broader social media mentions of TSLA and stock price activity, but it appears that this attention is reactionary rather than a lead indicator. It is, however, a confirmation of awareness of the stock following along with major price movements, up or down.\nWhat Trends Can We See?\nLooking at the two graphs of mentions vs stock price, the most prominent trend is how TSLA mentions, and discussion peaks mostly as major price spikes occur. It does not appear that mentions are a leading indicator, but perhaps a slow-down in mentions might indicate that any further major price movements are not to be expected.\nIn my eyes, the more interesting time period (circled in red below) is where mentions of TSLA slowed considerably, and the stock price dwindled following the peak in mentions.\nI argue that in this instance, when the stock fell from $900 to $600, WSB retail investors attention was diverted from the firm and this halted the upward price movement, sending the stock backward towards it's true long-run fundamental value.\nSource: Swaggy Stocks\nDoes This Awareness Effect Apply To Other Stocks?\nGiven GME was the beginning of notoriety for WSB, it's worth comparing the GME ticker to WSB sentiment to search for similar trends.\nAgain, large price movements occur around the same time as WSB commentary spikes, and prices tend to drift lower as attention drifts away.\nSource: Swaggy Stocks\nLooking at a third firm, Apple (AAPL), to compare WSB activity with the largest market cap firm in the US, the correlation between mentions and price activity is much weaker, suggesting that there may be a limit to the WSB community's influence. While activity still follows price movements, there is also the possibility WSB is just simply not as interested in AAPL as it is in TSLA or GME.\nSource: Swaggy Stocks\nThe Investment View: Results May Vary\nI would argue that WSB is not perhaps a leading indicator, but it does play a part in stock awareness and encourages new investors to enter the market.\nI would also argue that 11.2m retail investors is certainly a force to be reckoned with and worth paying attention to - perhaps not a guidance of which stock will boom next but rather which ones are overpriced or have peaked.\nOverall, there's a strong sense that stocks that receive attention from WSB undergo price volatility, and do drift back to their long-run fundamental value given enough time.\nPerhaps it's a case of, if WSB is promoting the stock, you're already too late.\nSo What Does This Mean For TSLA?\nComing full circle back to TSLA, and reviewing their WSB sentiment chart, I feel there is strong argument to be made that the stock is over-priced due to the presence of retail traders.\nHowever, monitoring WSB activity may give investors a helpful indicator of when TSLA may be about to experience a price correction as retail investor's attention is drawn away from the firm.\nWith that said, Elon Musk remains a variable worth watching given his awareness of the subreddit and its effect on the market, and he has the platform to drive attention back onto TSLA as he sees fit.\nThe Value Of A Mention\nIt's hard to place a quantifiable value on what a mention on WSB is worth to a firm, as individually they are probably worth close to $0. All thanks to what the media (hey, that’s me) is referring to as the remnants of Hurricane Ida.</p>\n<p>Anyway, wading knee deep in water at 1 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, as I embarked upon the Sisyphean task of bailing bilge out of my basement got me to thinking about the flood of ETF applications for abitcoin-backed products that Gary Gensler’s Securities and Exchange Commission is wading through.</p>\n<p>We talked to Will Rhind of GraniteShares, which put in an application for a long and short bitcoin ETF back in 2017, but is taking a hard pass this time around. I’ll leave you to judge whether Rhind’s reasoning is sound. SEC Chairman Gensler views futures as a more regulated area of the market and one where he thinks investor guardrails are more sound.</p>\n<p>Futures are usually a wager on an underlying commodity such as oilCL,or goldGC00and there is a growing bitcoin futures market run by CME Group.CMEBitcoin futures trade separately from the underlying asset and values don’t always align.</p>\n<p>Rhind told<i>ETF Wrap</i>during a Wednesday phone interview that there may not be any substantial point to the current rigmarole around trying to be the first to offer a bitcoin-backed ETF beyond the optics of it.</p>\n<p>Back in 2017, Rhind said the thesis for providing a bitcoin ETF was clear.</p>\n<p>“We felt bitcoin and other [crypto] currencies seemed like that was an asset that people wanted to trade and they couldn’t easily,” he said.</p>\n<p>That dynamic has changed substantially over the past three years, he argues, because access is easier for the average investor due to platforms like Coinbase GlobalCOINand other venues, such as PayPalPYPL,that offer exposure to bitcoin.</p>\n<p>“The best expression of an ETF has always been market access,” he said. “It can be lightening in a bottle when you combine a genuine need…there’s demand for a particular class and [the ETF],” addresses that need and unlocks value.</p>\n<p>“But by now this is no longer a market-access story,” Rhind said. “People can already get access.”</p>\n<p>The GraniteShares pro also said tax benefits that one might derive from a stock ETF wouldn’t likely be in play for a bitcoin futures ETF.</p>\n<p>“The chances are that the tax treatment will be the same as it would if you owned the underlying futures directly,” he said.</p>\n<p>John Hyland, CFA, and director of Matthews International, told ETF.com that so-called roll costs, as futures contracts expire, could also create idiosyncrasies in ETF prices and trading.</p>\n<p>“Bitcoin futures will likely always be in a mild contango, much like gold futures–a small, but not welcome, outcome,” Hyland told ETF.com in an interview. Contango is a condition where prices are higher for longer-dated contracts.</p>\n<p>“So even if a bitcoin futures fund is small and can easily trade their futures, they will still likely underperform the spot price every year if using futures,” Hyland told ETF.com in an interview.</p>\n<p>All of that is worth thinking about amid all the hullabaloo around a bitcoin ETF. Is it worth it, even if one gets approved by October?</p>\n<p>Some crypto purists also like to point to the paradox of owning a decentralized asset, such as bitcoin or EtherETHUSD,on a centralized platform, like a fund traded on a public exchange.</p>\n<p><b>The good and the bad</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/69e190f6c95fa1044cc1f421aa792ac2\" tg-width=\"801\" tg-height=\"513\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/893a76e551af75b534550f5b045352ac\" tg-width=\"805\" tg-height=\"512\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">Data from Cboe Global Markets makes the case that the meme stock phenomenon that exploded into focus earlier this year, amid the rabid appetite for AMC Entertainment HoldingsAMCand GameStop Corp.GME,has been around for much longer.</p>\n<p>Cboe’s team, including summer intern, Jeff Nguyen, determined that the meme-stock phenomenon, characterized by stocks that move on social mentions and idea collaboration over social platforms, rather than fundamentals, has been going on since at least 2019 (see attached chart). SEC Chairman Gensler views futures as a more regulated area of the market and one where he thinks investor guardrails are more sound.\nFutures are usually a wager on an underlying commodity such as oilCL,or goldGC00and there is a growing bitcoin futures market run by CME Group.CMEBitcoin futures trade separately from the underlying asset and values don’t always align.\nRhind toldETF Wrapduring a Wednesday phone interview that there may not be any substantial point to the current rigmarole around trying to be the first to offer a bitcoin-backed ETF beyond the optics of it.\nBack in 2017, Rhind said the thesis for providing a bitcoin ETF was clear.\n“We felt bitcoin and other [crypto] currencies seemed like that was an asset that people wanted to trade and they couldn’t easily,” he said.\nThat dynamic has changed substantially over the past three years, he argues, because access is easier for the average investor due to platforms like Coinbase GlobalCOINand other venues, such as PayPalPYPL,that offer exposure to bitcoin.\n“The best expression of an ETF has always been market access,” he said. “It can be lightening in a bottle when you combine a genuine need…there’s demand for a particular class and [the ETF],” addresses that need and unlocks value.\n“But by now this is no longer a market-access story,” Rhind said. “People can already get access.”\nThe GraniteShares pro also said tax benefits that one might derive from a stock ETF wouldn’t likely be in play for a bitcoin futures ETF.\n“The chances are that the tax treatment will be the same as it would if you owned the underlying futures directly,” he said.\nJohn Hyland, CFA, and director of Matthews International, told ETF.com that so-called roll costs, as futures contracts expire, could also create idiosyncrasies in ETF prices and trading.\n“Bitcoin futures will likely always be in a mild contango, much like gold futures–a small, but not welcome, outcome,” Hyland told ETF.com in an interview. Contango is a condition where prices are higher for longer-dated contracts.\n“So even if a bitcoin futures fund is small and can easily trade their futures, they will still likely underperform the spot price every year if using futures,” Hyland told ETF.com in an interview.\nAll of that is worth thinking about amid all the hullabaloo around a bitcoin ETF. The stock no longer reacts wildly to every positive development, disappointing investors who made fortunes while staying faithful to the world’s largest electric car-maker.</p>\n<p>The latest example of this dampening optimism came when Tesla announced itsquarterly earningson July 26. The company’s shares fell more than 4% after the earnings report, which handedly beat analysts’ consensus estimates.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae1d0e8a03c4269ff0c91bcaaf57e87d\" tg-width=\"1412\" tg-height=\"1172\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Tesla Weekly Chart.</span></p>\n<p>During the quarter, in which the California-based car-maker produced a record 201,250 vehicles, its profit more than tripled to $1.45 a share on an adjusted basis, beating the $0.97 average analysts had estimated. It was also the company’s eighth straight profitable quarter.</p>\n<p>Tesla's net income in the second quarter was roughly equal to the prior four quarters combined. The company reported revenue of roughly $12 billion for the period that ended June 30, nearly double the amount in the corresponding period a year earlier.</p>\n<p>Despite this strong earnings momentum, the stock didn’t jump the way it once did on every shred of positive news. TSLA is up less than 6% during the past five days as of yesterday's close. From its record high in January, Tesla shares are down almost 23%.</p>\n<p>So, what’s prompting investors to shun this market tech darling, even when its financials have shown a great turnaround?</p>\n<p>As we see it, there are both short- and long-term factors at play, causing Tesla enthusiasts to move to the sidelines. Here are three key catalysts that make this EV stalwart a risky bet right now, supporting our view that Tesla is not a buy in this environment:</p>\n<p><b>1. Chip Shortages</b></p>\n<p>The global chip shortages that have hurt production for many car-makers is beginning to pinch Tesla as well. During its earnings call, Tesla told investors that the company's future pace of growth won't be able to escape the ongoing supply-chain challenges.</p>\n<p>The company, for example, is struggling to introduce new models and secure parts for all its vehicles. Tesla again delayed its semi-trailer truck—already two years late—with first deliveries now slated for 2022. The company attributed the delay to supply-chain issues and limited battery-cell supply, as well as trying to focus on getting new factories online.</p>\n<p>The company’s plans for its first pickup truck, once expected to go to customers as early as this year, are also being affected by parts issues, said Chief Executive Elon Musk on an earnings call, without giving a revised first delivery date.</p>\n<p>How long chip-supply issues will persist is anybody’s guess right now. Chip-makers are trying to eke out more supply through changes to manufacturing processes and by opening up spare capacity to rivals, auditing customer orders to prevent hoarding and swapping over production lines, according to a recent report by theWall Street Journal. The bad news: there are no quick fixes, as building new production capacity usually takes years.</p>\n<p><b>2. Competition Heating Up</b></p>\n<p>Another threat challenging Tesla’s dominance in the EV market is coming from new sources of competition. Overall, five of the biggest automakers—Daimler(OTC:DDAIF), Ford (NYSE:F),General Motors(NYSE:GM), Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) and Volkswagen (OTC:VWAGY)—have each laid out plans to spend an average $6.5 billion annually on electrification efforts over the next five to 10 years, according toBloomberg.</p>\n<p>In April, VW launched its new Audi Q4 e-tron model to compete with Tesla in the fast-growing market of compact crossover SUVs. The Audi’s EV model is among a dozen vehicles the German auto-maker has planned, including VW’s ID.4 and an electric version of the Porsche Macan. VW is aiming to sell roughly 600,000 purely battery-powered cars this year.</p>\n<p>While traditional auto-makers, like Volkswagen and GM accelerate their EV efforts, smaller Chinese upstarts like Nio (NYSE:NIO) and Xpeng (NYSE:XPEV) are also vying for tech-savvy customers.</p>\n<p>According to media reports, GM’s EV plans will accelerate starting later this year as a Hummer pickup truck and Cadillac Lyriq sport utility vehicle begin rolling off the Detroit carmaker's production lines. An electric Chevy Silverado pickup is also on the way.</p>\n<p>In China, GM’s lower-priced Hongguang Mini EV, which it’s producing with two state-owned companies, has been a hit. More than a quarter of a million of the models have been sold since the vehicle launched last July, outperforming international rivals like Tesla’s Model 3 and local competitors, including Great Wall's (OTC:GWLLY) Ora Black Cat.</p>\n<p><b>3. Lofty Valuations</b></p>\n<p>Tesla’s valuation has also been a major source of friction among Wall Street’s top analysts. Those who see Tesla as a highly overpriced stock argue that the company has no room to make an error when its stock is priced for perfection.</p>\n<p>JPMorgan, which has an underweight rating on Tesla with a price target of $160, said in a recent note:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “Tesla’s high valuation leaves little room for less-than-perfect execution, as evidenced by a relatively tepid reaction in the aftermarket Monday to what was a fairly sizable EBITA beat, and we did see some less than perfect takeaways, including the official delay of the Tesla Semi into 2022 (albeit likely already almost entirely baked in); the seeming delay of the Cybertruck from late 2021 into 2022 (likely mostly baked in).”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Even after its recent selloff, Tesla has a $680-billion market capitalization, making it worth more than the combined value of GM, Ford, Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) and Volkswagen.</p>\n<p>Bernstein Research, which has a sell rating on Tesla with a price target of $175, said in its note:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We continue to struggle to justify TSLA’s valuation, which is higher than all other major automakers combined and appears to imply huge volume and industry leading profitability going forward, which is historically unprecedented.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>These bearish views, however, shouldn’t hide the fact that many analysts believe Tesla is more than a car company and its stock has more upside.</p>\n<p>Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas says Tesla shouldn’t be valued as a legacy car-maker. As cars become more connected to the internet, that opens up a lot of other addressable markets and Tesla is well-positioned to take advantage of those new opportunities.</p>\n<p>Said Jonas in a Bloomberg report:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “In the process, it takes you away from comparing Tesla to car companies and should rather be compared to software-as-a-service companies.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>This divergence is evident from<i>Investing.com</i>poll of analystsregarding Tesla’s share price. Of 35 analysts, 15 have a buy rating on the stock, while 12 have neutral ratings and eight have a sell recommendation, with a 12-month consensus price target of $730.59.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e03552d09d605eee4bcfefd531f11080\" tg-width=\"1332\" tg-height=\"856\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Chart: Investing.com</span></p>\n<p>For investors, who look to technical signals to help make short-term investment decisions, the most popular indicators—moving averages, oscillators and pivots—are currently providing a buy signal, especially after Tesla’s strong earnings beat.</p>\n<p><b>Bottom Line</b></p>\n<p>Tesla has remained the only credible player in the high-quality EV market in recent years, but that equation is changing quickly after the entry of new players and the massive spending plans being put forward by the legacy car-makers. The stock no longer reacts wildly to every positive development, disappointing investors who made fortunes while staying faithful to the world’s largest electric car-maker.\nThe latest example of this dampening optimism came when Tesla announced itsquarterly earningson July 26. The company’s shares fell more than 4% after the earnings report, which handedly beat analysts’ consensus estimates.\nTesla Weekly Chart.\nDuring the quarter, in which the California-based car-maker produced a record 201,250 vehicles, its profit more than tripled to $1.45 a share on an adjusted basis, beating the $0.97 average analysts had estimated. It was also the company’s eighth straight profitable quarter.\nTesla's net income in the second quarter was roughly equal to the prior four quarters combined. The company reported revenue of roughly $12 billion for the period that ended June 30, nearly double the amount in the corresponding period a year earlier.\nDespite this strong earnings momentum, the stock didn’t jump the way it once did on every shred of positive news. TSLA is up less than 6% during the past five days as of yesterday's close. From its record high in January, Tesla shares are down almost 23%.\nSo, what’s prompting investors to shun this market tech darling, even when its financials have shown a great turnaround?\nAs we see it, there are both short- and long-term factors at play, causing Tesla enthusiasts to move to the sidelines. Here are three key catalysts that make this EV stalwart a risky bet right now, supporting our view that Tesla is not a buy in this environment:\n1. Chip Shortages\nThe global chip shortages that have hurt production for many car-makers is beginning to pinch Tesla as well. During its earnings call, Tesla told investors that the company's future pace of growth won't be able to escape the ongoing supply-chain challenges.\nThe company, for example, is struggling to introduce new models and secure parts for all its vehicles. Tesla again delayed its semi-trailer truck—already two years late—with first deliveries now slated for 2022. The company attributed the delay to supply-chain issues and limited battery-cell supply, as well as trying to focus on getting new factories online.\nThe company’s plans for its first pickup truck, once expected to go to customers as early as this year, are also being affected by parts issues, said Chief Executive Elon Musk on an earnings call, without giving a revised first delivery date.\nHow long chip-supply issues will persist is anybody’s guess right now. Chip-makers are trying to eke out more supply through changes to manufacturing processes and by opening up spare capacity to rivals, auditing customer orders to prevent hoarding and swapping over production lines, according to a recent report by theWall Street Journal. The bad news: there are no quick fixes, as building new production capacity usually takes years.\n2. Competition Heating Up\nAnother threat challenging Tesla’s dominance in the EV market is coming from new sources of competition. Overall, five of the biggest automakers—Daimler(OTC:DDAIF), Ford (NYSE:F),General Motors(NYSE:GM), Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) and Volkswagen (OTC:VWAGY)—have each laid out plans to spend an average $6.5 billion annually on electrification efforts over the next five to 10 years, according toBloomberg.\nIn April, VW launched its new Audi Q4 e-tron model to compete with Tesla in the fast-growing market of compact crossover SUVs. The Audi’s EV model is among a dozen vehicles the German auto-maker has planned, including VW’s ID.4 and an electric version of the Porsche Macan. VW is aiming to sell roughly 600,000 purely battery-powered cars this year.\nWhile traditional auto-makers, like Volkswagen and GM accelerate their EV efforts, smaller Chinese upstarts like Nio (NYSE:NIO) and Xpeng (NYSE:XPEV) are also vying for tech-savvy customers.\nAccording to media reports, GM’s EV plans will accelerate starting later this year as a Hummer pickup truck and Cadillac Lyriq sport utility vehicle begin rolling off the Detroit carmaker's production lines. An electric Chevy Silverado pickup is also on the way.\nIn China, GM’s lower-priced Hongguang Mini EV, which it’s producing with two state-owned companies, has been a hit. More than a quarter of a million of the models have been sold since the vehicle launched last July, outperforming international rivals like Tesla’s Model 3 and local competitors, including Great Wall's (OTC:GWLLY) Ora Black Cat.\n3. Lofty Valuations\nTesla’s valuation has also been a major source of friction among Wall Street’s top analysts. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.</p>\n<p>Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.</p>\n<p>As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.</p>\n<p>This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.</p>\n<p>Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.</p>\n<p>Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”</p>\n<p>As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know do<i>not</i>want to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.</p>\n<p>What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.</p>\n<p>This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.</p>\n<p>However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.</p>\n<p><b>Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential</b></p>\n<p>I’m talking about <b>Nio, Inc.</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio back in February.</p>\n<p>The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.</p>\n<p>The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies like<b>NVIDIA Corporation</b>(NASDAQ:<b>NVDA</b>), another one of my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.</p>\n<p>With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.</p>\n<p>That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.</p>\n<p>Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”</p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.\nInstead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.\nAs a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.\nThis “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.\nBoth the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.\nClearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”\nAs someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.\nWhat Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.\nThe good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.\nThis is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.\nHowever, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.\nTaking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential\nI’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio back in February.\nThe company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.\nThe company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.\nNow, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.\nWith the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.\nThat means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.\nShares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”\nInterestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.</p>\n<p>Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.</p>\n<p>As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.</p>\n<p>This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.</p>\n<p>Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.</p>\n<p>Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”</p>\n<p>As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know do<i>not</i>want to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.</p>\n<p>What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.</p>\n<p>The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.</p>\n<p>This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.</p>\n<p>However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.</p>\n<p><b>Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential</b></p>\n<p>I’m talking about <b>Nio, Inc.</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio back in February.</p>\n<p>The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.</p>\n<p>The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies like<b>NVIDIA Corporation</b>(NASDAQ:<b>NVDA</b>), another one of my<b><i>Platinum Growth Club</i></b>Model Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.</p>\n<p>With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.</p>\n<p>That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.</p>\n<p>Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”</p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year.
