than a year, but history shows that stock prices don't move up in a straight line. Market corrections are par for the course when investing in stocks, but that same history shows these downturns lay the foundation for great returns afterward.
\n
If you've been thinking about buying shares of a video game stock, the next market pullback would be a great buying opportunity. Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI), Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), and Tencent (OTC:TCEHY) are cash-rich leaders in the burgeoning video game industry that can deliver market-beating returns over the long term. Let's find out a bit more about these three stocks.
\n
\n
1. Activision Blizzard
\n
Activision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings. It's best known for making one of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in Call of Duty. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first Call of Duty title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.
\n
The Call of Duty franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.
\n
Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.
\n
It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.
\n
Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.
\n
2. Electronic Arts
\n
Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably Madden and FIFA. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.
\n
Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter Apex Legends launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous NCAA Football franchise under the new title EA Sports College Football, which should be released within the next few years.
\n
EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.
\n
In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year, which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.
\n
3. Tencent
\n
Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in League of Legends. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.
\n
Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.
\n
Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.
\n
Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development. It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.
\n
\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"
\n
However, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Tencent has come under scrutiny by regulators that have cracked down on \"inappropriate\" content in the company's games, but Tencent has been able to navigate through these obstacles and deliver market-beating returns to investors. The stock price has fallen recently, which can be chalked up to regulatory issues and near-term investments in the business that will pressure profitability this year. But I would look at the recent drop in share price as a buying opportunity.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Best Video Game Stocks to Buy in the Next Market Crash
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Best Video Game Stocks to Buy in the Next Market Crash\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-24 09:46 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The bulls in the market have been stomping on the bears for more than a year, but history shows that stock prices don't move up in a straight line. Not long ago, the talk on Wall Street was all about the tech giant’s uncharacteristically underperforming stock, especially when compared to some of the other mega-caps’ displays in 2021.\nWith shares hitting an all-time high this week and the gap in performance narrowing over the past month, that conversation can now be put to rest.\nThe uptick has coincided with reports Apple has boosted the production rate of its iPhones, instructing manufacturers to build 90 million iPhones this year, a 20% increase on the 75 million units it produced last year.\nThe renewed optimism in all things Apple is not surprising to J.P. Morgan’s Samik Chatterjee. The analyst recently told investors Apple is well set up to outperform in 2H21. In fact, the growing confidence means Chatterjee has added Apple to the firm’s Analyst Focus List as “a Growth idea.”\n“The recent momentum led by better market share, drives us to also estimate higher sustainable volumes in future quarters, leading us to see a path to Apple outperforming investor expectations over a longer time horizon rather than just the upcoming earnings print,” the 5-star analyst said, confirming Apple is also a Top Pick.\nTo reflect the increase in build rates, Chatterjee has “modestly” increased iPhone volume expectations, but of more importance to the analyst is the “path to upside” for the shares in the medium-term.\nThis is because of the potential for better iPhone 12 sales but also due to what Chatterjee considers are low expectations from the iPhone 13’s fall launch, which could create “another leg to the upside opportunity.”\nIt’s a potent mix which is given additional allure with the launch of the iPhone SE3 next year and means Apple can “not only pleasantly surprise with a more robust iPhone 13 cycle, but also has the opportunity to drive material upside to consensus expectations for FY22.”\nTo this end, Chatterjee rates Apple shares an Overweight (i.e. Buy), while slightly lifting the price target from $170 to $175. The revised figure implying shares will add 19.5% from current levels.\nSo, that’s J.P. Morgan’s view, what does the rest of the Street have in mind for Apple? Based on 20 Buys, 5 Holds and 2 Sells, the stock currently has a Moderate Buy consensus rating. The forecast is for shares to appreciate by 8% over the coming months, given the average price target clocks in at $158.62.\nTo find good ideas for tech stocks trading at attractive valuations, visit An increasing need for EVcharging technologyis set to benefit a raft of global stocks, according to the bank, including semiconductor and Big Oil companies, as well as auto suppliers.\nBank of America analysts led by Harry Wyburd flagged a rapid rise in ownership of electric vehicles, with EVs on Europe’s roads up 100% since pre-Covid.\nIn a research note published last week, they wrote: “Our updated charger forecasts see c. [circa] $80bn of potential charging infrastructure investment by 2040E [estimate].”\nThe bank estimates there are currently around nine public charging points per 100 electric vehicles in Europe and expects the number to rise as more of the cars hit the road. BofA also expects “significant” growth in home charging points, with around 60 million electric connectors by 2030.\nBofA’s stock picks include:\nSemiconductors\n“We estimate that power semiconductor demand related to charger deployments in Europe can increase from low tens of millions of US dollars per annum to c$50m per annum by 2025 and c$100m per annum by 2030,” the analysts stated, pickingInfineonandSTMicroas beneficiaries of this.\nOil majors\nBig Oil can create “significant value” from “shifting their equity story to Big Energy,” with more of a focus on decarbonization, according to BofA. Its analysts noted the shift was becoming more urgent for these companies, given shareholder pressure and the Hague District Court’sdemands for Shellto meet climate targets set out in the Paris Agreement.\nThe analysts pickedBP,ShellandTotaland said: “We believe EV charging will grow in importance in linking Big Oil’s existing Marketing footprints (including global brand recognition and backing from their commodity trading desks) with Big Oils’ expansion into electricity supply.”\nAuto suppliers\nValeomakes parts for EVs of all sizes as well as a range of charging components for the likes ofVWand Mercedes. It is buy-rated by BofA, which noted that its joint venture withSiemensnow has around a 40% market share of the high voltage charging sector.\nMetals and mining\nCopper producerAntofagastaand minerBolidenare buy-rated picks for BofA, with copper likely to be a key part of EV chargers as well as inside the vehicle. “New technologies such as renewables, energy storage and electric vehicles that are gaining traction have one thing in common: they require a set of commodities we define as MIFTs, or metals important for future technologies,” BofA’s analysts wrote.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":98,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":154026361,"gmtCreate":1625462024853,"gmtModify":1631891656988,"author":{"id":"4087559776333650","authorId":"4087559776333650","name":"ivyg2768","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed8abd1654c7837e060560ffa05f2eee","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087559776333650","authorIdStr":"4087559776333650"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$remain steady ","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$remain steady ","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$remain steady","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6e55958b76fbf073ec963e8eed49b77a","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/154026361","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":177,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":153636582,"gmtCreate":1625020630746,"gmtModify":1631891657003,"author":{"id":"4087559776333650","authorId":"4087559776333650","name":"ivyg2768","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed8abd1654c7837e060560ffa05f2eee","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087559776333650","authorIdStr":"4087559776333650"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$hm.... Welcome to Power On, a weekly newsletter where I’m going to write about my passions—Ap","content":"
Hey everyone! Welcome to Power On, a weekly newsletter where I’m going to write about my passions—Apple, new devices and Silicon Valley secrets—with the occasional riff about my non-work obsession, the NBA. This is the inaugural edition, and be warned, I’m just getting over the Lakers playoffs loss. Take a look around, let me know what you think, and send your questions via email or Twitter.
\n
The Starters
\n
Let’s get right to the point: I wrote this newsletter on an iPad Pro. That might not sound like some shocking revelation, but trust me, I had all but relegated the tablet to video watching and light gaming duties. Since this month’s release of the iPadOS 15 beta, however, I’ve left my laptop mostly behind and have done the vast majority of my work from the iPad.
\n
Now I have even stronger feelings for what Apple Inc. needs to change about the iPad—and it goes beyond software. It’s time for a giant screen, one in the 14-inch to 16-inch range. I love the speed, touchscreen, versatility and Magic Keyboard, but the 12.9-inch display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.
\n
And I’m not the only one who thinks that: I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a redesigned iPad Pro in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.
\n
Photographer: Nina Riggio/Bloomberg
\n
Speaking of the iPad and Mac becoming more similar, I think Apple has absolutely moved the needle with the iPad Pro, when it comes to its software, but it still ultimately needs to allow Mac apps and Mac-like multitasking with more flexible arrangements of app windows.
\n
I’m liking the multitasking improvements so far in the iPad beta. The biggest change there for me is the ability to launch apps into split view from the home screen, rather than just from the dock. I’m digging the App Library, which is basically now the iPad version of Launchpad on the Mac.
\n
But I’d still like the ability to have four or five easily resizable and movable windows in front of me at once like I can on my Mac. Or on Windows, which just showed off a new version last week with a cleaner interface. And I’d like to be able to run some of my Mac apps, such as those for work, that don’t exist on the iPad. A larger iPad Pro would be the perfect place for both of those enhancements. It’s time for Apple to rip off the Band-Aid and go all in on the iPad.
\n
The Bench
\n
Amazon explores AR glasses and a foldable Kindle e-reader.Apple’s labs in Cupertino, California, aren’t the only ones cooking up new projects. While Amazon.com Inc. is still at work on many home gadgets like Echos and a future home robot, it also has its eyes on mobile devices, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s explorations. That includes long-term plans for augmented reality glasses (of course, a space Apple plans to enter) and even internal discussion of a Kindle e-reader with a foldable screen, after Samsung popularized the technology.
\n
Apple’s App Store revenue machine keeps growing.Apple continues to have several billion reasons to protect its App Store from lawmakers. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a 15% revenue share as part of Apple’s small business program.
\n
Peloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a heart rate monitor for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. My guess is that’s only the beginning for their wearable ambitions, though.
\n
Speaking of the Apple Watch, new models aplenty are coming.Apple has a long roadmap ahead for the watch. On tap for this year:a bit of a redesign with an upgraded screen, faster processor and new wireless technology. For next year, expect a more iterative update to the flagship model that adds a body temperature sensor alongside a new Apple Watch SE and an explorer edition with a more rugged frame. A blood sugar monitor is further off.
\n
Roster Changes
\n
Since the project started to take shape around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.
\n
This year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.
\n
These weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team. Take a look around, let me know what you think, and send your questions via email or Twitter.\nThe Starters\nLet’s get right to the point: I wrote this newsletter on an iPad Pro. That might not sound like some shocking revelation, but trust me, I had all but relegated the tablet to video watching and light gaming duties. Since this month’s release of the iPadOS 15 beta, however, I’ve left my laptop mostly behind and have done the vast majority of my work from the iPad.\nNow I have even stronger feelings for what Apple Inc. needs to change about the iPad—and it goes beyond software. It’s time for a giant screen, one in the 14-inch to 16-inch range. I love the speed, touchscreen, versatility and Magic Keyboard, but the 12.9-inch display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.\nAnd I’m not the only one who thinks that: I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a redesigned iPad Pro in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.\nPhotographer: Nina Riggio/Bloomberg\nSpeaking of the iPad and Mac becoming more similar, I think Apple has absolutely moved the needle with the iPad Pro, when it comes to its software, but it still ultimately needs to allow Mac apps and Mac-like multitasking with more flexible arrangements of app windows.\nI’m liking the multitasking improvements so far in the iPad beta. The biggest change there for me is the ability to launch apps into split view from the home screen, rather than just from the dock. I’m digging the App Library, which is basically now the iPad version of Launchpad on the Mac.\nBut I’d still like the ability to have four or five easily resizable and movable windows in front of me at once like I can on my Mac. Or on Windows, which just showed off a new version last week with a cleaner interface. And I’d like to be able to run some of my Mac apps, such as those for work, that don’t exist on the iPad. A larger iPad Pro would be the perfect place for both of those enhancements. It’s time for Apple to rip off the Band-Aid and go all in on the iPad.\nThe Bench\nAmazon explores AR glasses and a foldable Kindle e-reader.Apple’s labs in Cupertino, California, aren’t the only ones cooking up new projects. While Amazon.com Inc. is still at work on many home gadgets like Echos and a future home robot, it also has its eyes on mobile devices, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s explorations. That includes long-term plans for augmented reality glasses (of course, a space Apple plans to enter) and even internal discussion of a Kindle e-reader with a foldable screen, after Samsung popularized the technology.\nApple’s App Store revenue machine keeps growing.Apple continues to have several billion reasons to protect its App Store from lawmakers. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a 15% revenue share as part of Apple’s small business program.\nPeloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a heart rate monitor for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. My guess is that’s only the beginning for their wearable ambitions, though.\nSpeaking of the Apple Watch, new models aplenty are coming.Apple has a long roadmap ahead for the watch. On tap for this year:a bit of a redesign with an upgraded screen, faster processor and new wireless technology. For next year, expect a more iterative update to the flagship model that adds a body temperature sensor alongside a new Apple Watch SE and an explorer edition with a more rugged frame. A blood sugar monitor is further off.\nRoster Changes\nSince the project started to take shape around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.\nThis year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.\nThese weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team. The company has promoted some other names to the car division’s leadership as part of a reshuffle, according to members of the group.\nThey include:\n\nHanns Tappeiner, the co-founder and former president of now-defunct robotic toy car startup Anki (which was featured onstage at WWDC in 2013)\nTim Cheng, who ran the car operating system team for Drive.ai, a self-driving startup Apple bought two years ago\nHans Lee, who joined Apple in March after departing Freedom Robotics, a company he co-founded that creates software to control fleets of robots\nMartin Levihn, who now runs a group overseeing artificial intelligence-based decision making for self-driving cars\nPaul Costa, a longtime Apple hardware engineering manager","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":138,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":150018196,"gmtCreate":1624874718315,"gmtModify":1631891657028,"author":{"id":"4087559776333650","authorId":"4087559776333650","name":"ivyg2768","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed8abd1654c7837e060560ffa05f2eee","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087559776333650","authorIdStr":"4087559776333650"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great! The forecast is for shares to appreciate by 8% over the coming months, given the average price target clocks in at $158.62.\nTo find good ideas for tech stocks trading at attractive valuations, visit TipRanks’ Best Stocks to Buy, a newly launched tool that unites all of TipRanks’ equity insights.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":448,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":174743129,"gmtCreate":1627146053361,"gmtModify":1631888714064,"author":{"id":"4087559776333650","authorId":"4087559776333650","name":"ivyg2768","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed8abd1654c7837e060560ffa05f2eee","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087559776333650","authorIdStr":"4087559776333650"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Let's see ","listText":"Let's see ","text":"Let's see","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/174743129","repostId":"1109439356","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1109439356","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627096841,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1109439356?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-24 11:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Musk Tweets That Tesla Will Share Its Charging Network. Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.
\n
Then there’s the free publicity and advertising. Opening up the charging network shows Tesla is interested in overall EV adoption and not just in selling its own vehicles. That’s positive for the brand. And it means that thousands of EV buyers will be pulling up to a Tesla logo, again and again.
\n
Investors brushed off the tweet. Tesla closed at $643.38 Friday, basically flat on the week, with earnings ahead. That’s probably right. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.\nThen there’s the free publicity and advertising. Opening up the charging network shows Tesla is interested in overall EV adoption and not just in selling its own vehicles. That’s positive for the brand. And it means that thousands of EV buyers will be pulling up to a Tesla logo, again and again.\nInvestors brushed off the tweet. Tesla closed at $643.38 Friday, basically flat on the week, with earnings ahead. That’s probably right. For now, charging-for-all will probably matter more at the margins.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":395,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":153636582,"gmtCreate":1625020630746,"gmtModify":1631891657003,"author":{"id":"4087559776333650","authorId":"4087559776333650","name":"ivyg2768","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed8abd1654c7837e060560ffa05f2eee","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087559776333650","authorIdStr":"4087559776333650"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$hm.... The banking giant believes that supply and demand imbalances in the oil market will push crude prices up to $100 a barrel by next year. The bank isn't alone -- big oil executives also believe oil prices could top $100 a barrel as the global economy roars back to life amid tightening supplies.
\n
That scenario would undoubtedly be a boon for oil stocks. With that in mind, we asked some of our energy contributors what oil stocks they believe are the most compelling buys as oil prices head toward triple digits. Here's why they think Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY), Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), and Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) have some of the best upside potential to triple digit oil.
\n
A double boost
\n
Reuben Gregg Brewer (Occidental Petroleum): I wouldn't call Occidental Petroleum a buy and hold type of energy stock, given the self-inflicted wounds it suffered during the 2020 oil downturn. In fact, the takeover battle for Anadarko Petroleum that it won over Chevron (NYSE:CVX) bordered on the side of hubris. And it left the company ill-prepared for the pandemic-driven drop in oil demand and prices.
\n
And yet, as oil rebounds, with some suggesting that $100 a barrel is a real possibility, more aggressive investors looking for a way to play such a commodity move might still be interested. There's two reasons for this. First, as an oil driller Occidental Petroleum will clearly benefit from a big rise in this key commodity. But the bigger reason is that such an increase will make it easier for management to deal with the lingering impacts of the Anadarko deal, notably its still heavily leveraged balance sheet.
\n
OXY Debt to Equity Ratio data by YCharts
\n
So, there's the direct top- and bottom-line benefit here (which all energy companies will likely see) and the follow-on effect of an improving financial structure. Either one alone would likely get investors excited, but both together could lead to a complete reevaluation of the company's future -- for the better this time around. The Anadarko misstep should probably keep conservative investors away, but more aggressive types might view Occidental, warts and all, as something of a leveraged bet.
\n
Minting billions of dollars
\n
Neha Chamaria (Marathon Oil): Commodity prices don't just drive Marathon Oil's revenue and cash flows, but they're also the single biggest deciding factor behind the company's capital spending and capital allocation plans, which is why the ongoing rally in crude prices is great news for Marathon Oil. Importantly, crude is hitting two-year highs even as I write this, but Marathon Oil stock is still trading below its 2019 level.
\n
Consider this: Marathon expects to generate free cash flow (FCF) worth $1.1 billion this year at an average WTI crude price of $50 per barrel. At $60 a barrel, the company could generate as much as $1.6 billion in FCF! With crude having already surpassed $70 per barrel as of this writing, Marathon should therefore be able to generate even higher cash flows and use the extra cash to pay down more debt and reward shareholders with bigger returns. As of the end of the first quarter, Marathon had already repaid $500 million in debt and was targeting another $500 million debt reduction this year. It also raised its quarterly dividend by 33% in Q1.
\n
A higher oil-price environment, in fact, should set Marathon up for solid growth for years to come, considering it could generate FCF worth nearly $5 billion over the next five years at an average crude price of only $50 per barrel. And it isn't just oil prices. While flexing production as per market conditions, the company is also tightening its grip on costs, and aims to cut its production and general and administration expenses combined by nearly 30% this year versus 2019 levels. With management prioritizing the dividend and debt reduction, Marathon shareholders have a lot to look forward to as long as oil keeps rising.
\n
A monster dividend stock as oil prices keep rising
\n
Matt DiLallo (Devon Energy): Investors in Devon Energy reap immediate dividends as oil prices rise thanks to its unique variable dividend framework. The oil and gas producer plans to pay out up to half of the excess cash it generates each quarter to investors via a variable dividend. As oil prices rise, so does that payout.
\n
The company paid its first variable dividend this past March based on its fourth-quarter cash flow. It distributed 50% of its excess cash, which worked out to $0.19 per share. That was almost double its fixed quarterly dividend of $0.11 per share. The company will make its next variable payout at the end of this month. While it's only paying out 48% of its excess cash this quarter, at $0.23 per share, it's 13% above the previous quarter's rate and more than double its base quarterly rate. Driving that increase was the improvement in oil prices from an average of $42.65 a barrel in the fourth quarter to $57.87 in the first quarter.
\n
With oil prices continuing to rise -- they're close to $75 a barrel right now -- Devon's variable dividend payments should grow even bigger. The banking giant believes that supply and demand imbalances in the oil market will push crude prices up to $100 a barrel by next year. The bank isn't alone -- big oil executives also believe oil prices could top $100 a barrel as the global economy roars back to life amid tightening supplies.\nThat scenario would undoubtedly be a boon for oil stocks. With that in mind, we asked some of our energy contributors what oil stocks they believe are the most compelling buys as oil prices head toward triple digits. Here's why they think Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY), Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), and Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) have some of the best upside potential to triple digit oil.\nA double boost\nReuben Gregg Brewer (Occidental Petroleum): I wouldn't call Occidental Petroleum a buy and hold type of energy stock, given the self-inflicted wounds it suffered during the 2020 oil downturn. In fact, the takeover battle for Anadarko Petroleum that it won over Chevron (NYSE:CVX) bordered on the side of hubris. And it left the company ill-prepared for the pandemic-driven drop in oil demand and prices.\nAnd yet, as oil rebounds, with some suggesting that $100 a barrel is a real possibility, more aggressive investors looking for a way to play such a commodity move might still be interested.
