private

* Indexes end up: Dow 1.17%, S&P 1.89%, Nasdaq 3.41%

Jan 31 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, at the end of a volatile month for Wall Street where the tech-heavy Nasdaq narrowly avoided its worst ever start to the year and the S&P 500 recorded its weakest January performance since 2009.

Valuations of growth and technology stocks have come under increasing scrutiny, as investors fretted about companies trading at lofty valuations at a time when the U.S. Federal Reserve is set to begin raising interest rates to combat inflation and withdraw its pandemic stimulus measures.

In early Monday trading, the Nasdaq was on course to surpass its worst opening-month performance on record, when it fell 9.89% in 2008. However, after its best one-day gain since March 2021, it closed out January down 8.99%.

"At the end of the day, interest rates are going to have to move higher, and companies with high multiples will have to trade lower," said Decio Nascimento, chief investment officer of Norbury Partners.

He added that, with costs such as wages rising, there will be increased investor focus on sectors that can better handle those inflationary pressures, with less latitude for companies which promise future growth but which currently generate negative cash flow.

All of the 11 major S&P sectors advanced, led by a 3.8% rise in consumer discretionary stocks. The gain was led by Tesla Inc, which jumped 10.7% after Credit Suisse raised the electric car maker's stock rating to "outperform".

For January though, consumer discretionary was the worst performing sector, slipping 9.7%. In all, only the energy sector ended the month in positive territory, aided by oil prices hitting their highest level since October 2014 on Friday.

Overall, the bellwether S&P 500 had its worst overall month since the pandemic-led crash in March 2020.

The U.S. Federal Reserve last week signaled it intends to combat the four-decade high inflation by hiking key interest rates more aggressively than many market participants expected.

Fed funds futures traders are pricing in almost five rate increases by year-end, with some banks, such as the Bank of America now eyeing seven hikes this year.

"What the Fed did last week was to widen the spectrum of possibility of what rates could be in a year or two, so when you do that, you are going to create volatility in equities" said Norbury Partners' Nascimento.

Geopolitical tensions have added to market uncertainty, with the U.S. and its allies threatening Russia with new economic sanctions if it attacks Ukraine.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 406.39 points, or 1.17%, to 35,131.86, the S&P 500 gained 83.7 points, or 1.89%, to 4,515.55 and the Nasdaq Composite added 469.31 points, or 3.41%, to 14,239.88.

Boeing Co rose 5.1%. The U.S. planemaker secured a launch order from Qatar Airways for a new freighter version of its 777X passenger jet and a provisional order for 737 MAX jets.

Citrix Systems Inc's shares fell 3.4% after the software company said it had agreed to be taken private for $16.5 billion including debt by affiliates of Elliott Management and Vista Equity Partners.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 12.67 billion shares, compared with the 12.37 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

The S&P 500 posted eight new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 30 new highs and 45 new lows.

","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
比如Arkk目前第四重仓的Roku(持仓占比5.91%,相较21Q3仍有上升),股价自高点已下跌近70%,而关键基本面数据仍没有向好的趋势—— 从最近季度21Q3的财报数据来看,Roku的营收同比增长51%,和华尔街预期基本in lin","listText":"摘要:或许议员比机构持仓更有指导意义 loses 68% of its value (or more) comes with inherent risks, so investors should be cautious. But the broader tech market sell-off since November 2021 has been brutal to many high-growth stocks, and some now present an attractive risk-reward proposition.

Two stocks in particular are changing the face of their respective industries through innovation. It's an ambitious undertaking, and success is rarely without bumps in the road. But if they can turn around the sentiment regarding the true value of their stock, they could supercharge your portfolio over the long term.

1. Latch: Down 68%

The security industry for new buildings probably isn't the first place you'd look for a transformative tech stock. But Latch (NASDAQ:LTCH) is delivering innovative solutions that are changing the way high-rise builders think about guest management and access. Latch has become so popular, in fact, that 3 out of every 10 new apartments in the U.S. feature its security products.

The company's Smart Access technology allows users to unlock their doors using the Latch App, a key code, or even their Apple Watch. It offers multiple hardware configurations to serve new construction or to retrofit existing buildings. And the Latch Intercom allows new-age guest and delivery management, giving the users power to grant access to a visitor or a courier even if they're not home.

But unlike many security providers, which install systems and then move on, Latch is also a software-as-a-service company. Once its Intercom and Smart Home systems are implemented, it charges each landlord a subscription fee, creating a recurring revenue stream. As of the recent third quarter of 2021, it had booked $59.8 million of annual recurring revenue, a growing portion of its expected $360 million in total bookings for 2021.

Buildings take time to complete, and since Latch often makes deals with builders before projects begin construction, it reports bookings that are expected to eventually convert into revenue when finished. Once Latch officially reports its fourth-quarter 2021 results, the company expects it will have generated up to $42 million in revenue for the full year. In 2022, analysts expect that figure to soar 252% to $148 million, the natural result of a bookings backlog that is quickly being realized.

Latch is not a profitable company just yet, but its revenue growth over the next few years could pave the way to positive earnings per share. Its stock has traded in the public markets for less than a year, and while it offers promise, investors should make this bet a long-term one.

2. Lemonade: Down 84%

Artificial intelligence (AI) is allowing companies to rapidly deliver products and solutions that used to require hours of human input. In this case, Lemonade (NYSE:LMND) is leveraging the advanced technology to sell insurance. It offers five different types including car insurance, a segment it only recently entered.

Lemonade's goal is to make the customer experience more pleasant, and its AI-powered bot, Maya, does this by delivering a quote in less than 90 seconds. There's no need for frustrating, lengthy phone calls or clunky online questionnaires. Filing a claim is quick, too, with processing times as short as three minutes. This is particularly appealing to younger buyers, with the majority of Lemonade's customers being under age 34.

When Lemonade developed its homeowners, renters, pet, and life insurance, its strategy was to allow its AI model to learn over time. The more data it ingests, the more accurate it becomes, and therefore reaching optimal performance can be a slow process. When it pivoted to car insurance, which is its largest market yet, it decided to bolt on an acquisition to speed up the process.

In November 2021, Lemonade acquired Metromile (NASDAQ:MILE), which also uses AI for insurance purposes. At the time, Metromile had collected over 3 billion miles' worth of data and had a decade-long head start over Lemonade in car insurance. Additionally, Metromile brought its 49 state licenses to the deal, which is incredibly valuable to Lemonade as a new entrant to the market.

Lemonade already has 1.36 million customers, but car insurance could transform its business by helping it snatch market share from much larger industry players. In 2020, the company generated $94 million in revenue, but in 2022 analysts expect that figure to soar to $219 million. That's a 132% increase in just two years or a 52% compound annual growth rate.

And it could get even better. The U.S. car insurance market is estimated to be worth $316 billion in 2022, so while Lemonade's stock is down 84% from its all-time high of $182, it has an enormous addressable market to grow into. That makes it an exciting long-term bet for investors who are open to some risk.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 High-Risk Growth Stocks Down 68% to 84% That Could Soar
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 High-Risk Growth Stocks Down 68% to 84% That Could Soar\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-27 23:22 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Just to be clear upfront: Any company that loses 68% of its value (or more) comes with inherent risks, so investors should be cautious. Priced at $149,990, it was to feature a range of 520 miles, thanks to its innovative 4680 battery cells, 1,100 horsepower and the ability to speed from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.
\n
Instead, the company has begun delivering a new Model S Plaid that has only a 390-mile range and 1,020 horsepower, though it still sprints to from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just two seconds.
\n
As a way to “sugar coat” its flip flop, Tesla said the Model S Plaid is just as fast as the Model S Plaid Plus and $20,000 cheaper. Humm.
\n
This “bait and switch” has some Tesla fans worried, since they had deposits on the Model S Plaid Plus and wanted the innovative 4680 battery cells that Tesla had been touting as the key to longer range and more power. Essentially, the 4680 battery cells were the latest great Tesla development, since they were the first batteries to also be a structural component that supposedly allowed Tesla to lower the weight of its vehicles.
\n
Both the company’s Austin and Berlin manufacturing plants now under construction are supposed to also be making the 4680 batteries for new Tesla vehicles. If there is a problem with the engineering associated with utilizing the 4680 batteries or making them a structural component, then Tesla has grossly miscalculated, which is now worrying investors.
\n
Clearly something happened to delay the 4680 batteries that were supposed to provide Tesla with a competitive and engineering edge. For Tesla’s sake, I hope they figure out the problems associated with their much hyped 4680 battery cells, otherwise concerns about its two new manufacturing plants will emerge, as well as the stock losing more of its “mojo.”
\n
As someone who owns more than a few high-performance vehicles, I can tell you that the engineering geeks I know donotwant to get a new Model S Plaid instead of a Model S Plaid Plus and will likely ask for their deposits back.
\n
What Tesla did is like Ferrari or Porsche telling its customers that one of their much-hyped new performance models is now not being sold because the base model was just as good! Car fanatics, like myself, like the latest and greatest engineering tidbits, so we would rather cancel our orders versus settle for a base model.
\n
The good news for Tesla is that its China sales in May resurged to 21,936, up sharply from 11,671 in April. The company’s sales tend to spike at the end of each quarter. For example, Tesla sold 35,478 vehicles in China in March, which was the strongest month ever in China.
\n
This is raising expectations for very strong China sales in June, especially now that the Model Y is being manufactured in Shanghai. Interestingly, since most Chinese Teslas are now made with iron phosphate batteries, these vehicles have lower range than its lithium cobalt vehicles, but its iron phosphate vehicles are cheaper and now increasingly being exported to Europe.
\n
However, I’m convinced another electric vehicle (EV) company will eventually displace Tesla as the biggest manufacturer of EVs in China.
\n
Taking Advantage of the EV Revolution’s Profit Potential
\n
I’m talking about Nio, Inc.(NYSE:NIO). The reality is that this company is on the verge of dominating the EV market in China and Hong Kong. It’s why I put NIO on myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio back in February.
\n
The company boasts that it is the “next-generation car company,” as it designs and manufactures electric vehicles that utilize the latest technologies in connectivity, autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI). NIO currently offers an electric seven-seater SUV (ES8) and a five-seater electric SUV (ES6) and recently introduced an attractive electric sedan (ET7). Its vehicles utilize NOMI, an in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant.
\n
The company is also partnering with cutting-edge chip companies likeNVIDIA Corporation(NASDAQ:NVDA), another one of myPlatinum Growth ClubModel Portfolio stocks. NIO plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip for its electric vehicles that will provide autonomous driving capabilities. The NVIDIA DRIVE Orin-powered supercomputer, which is being called Adam, will be launched in the ET7 sedan in China in 2022. Announcements like this are very positive, so NIO has been stealing some of Tesla’s thunder lately.
\n
Now, it’s important to note that NIO was bailed out by the Chinese government. Last year, the Chinese government injected $1 billion and now has a 24% ownership in the company. The reality is that China wants to dominate at least five major industries by 2025, and NIO is now its ticket to dominate EV manufacturing.
\n
With the backing of the Chinese government, some Wall Street firms are eager to help NIO by issuing new debt or equity. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if NIO surpasses Tesla, which is currently number-two in China, for market share in the upcoming years.
\n
That means, if you missed Tesla’s parabolic run like I did, NIO is essentially giving us a “second chance” to make money in a potentially explosive electric vehicle company.
\n
Shares of NIO climbed nearly 13% since the company’s June 4 announcement of its May delivery report and positive analyst comments, while Tesla shares rose almost 3%. First, NIO revealed that the global chip shortage is starting to take a toll on its business. NIO only delivered 6,711 vehicles in May, or a 5.5% decline from April’s deliveries. Company management noted that deliveries were “adversely impacted for several days due to the volatility of semiconductor supply and certain logistical adjustments.”
\n
Interestingly, despite the month-to-month dip, NIO’s deliveries were still up 95.3% year-over-year. Tesla disclosed that chip shortages, port congestion and other supply-chain issues were hurting its ability to make as many cars as it could sell, and toned down its forecasts language. Tesla’s revenue of $13.8 billion came in a bit shy of analysts’ estimates of $14 billion.
\n
Tesla also removed a clause that had led investors to believe 2021 would be an outlier growth year, when it stated previously: “In some years it may grow faster, which we expect to be the case in 2021.”
\n
“It’s important to note while we have roughly doubled deliveries year to date, this has been exceptionally difficult to achieve,” said Tesla Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn, who took over as the main executive in Tesla’s earnings call after Musk bowed out last quarter.
\n
When asked by investors what the company’s goal was for production capacity, Kirkhorn said Tesla seeks to increase growth by 50%, but wisely couched that goal in a way that Musk rarely does.
\n
“There may be some periods of time which we’re ahead of that. There could be some periods of time despite our best efforts where we’re slightly lower than that,” he said. “But that remains the long-term goal of the company.”
\n
Gone from the quarterly call were the often outlandish predictions by Musk, such as his infamous prediction for 1 million Teslas as self-driving robotaxis in 2020 and his forecasts for production targets that were frequently missed.
\n
Instead, the more staid call, with what seemed like a few more questions from Wall Street analysts, included more discussion of operating margins, but it also included comments on some small changes to the CyberTruck, and a statement that Tesla is looking to launch it late next year. Tesla disclosed that chip shortages, port congestion and other supply-chain issues were hurting its ability to make as many cars as it could sell, and toned down its forecasts language. Tesla’s revenue of $13.8 billion came in a bit shy of analysts’ estimates of $14 billion.\nTesla also removed a clause that had led investors to believe 2021 would be an outlier growth year, when it stated previously: “In some years it may grow faster, which we expect to be the case in 2021.”\n“It’s important to note while we have roughly doubled deliveries year to date, this has been exceptionally difficult to achieve,” said Tesla Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn, who took over as the main executive in Tesla’s earnings call after Musk bowed out last quarter.\nWhen asked by investors what the company’s goal was for production capacity, Kirkhorn said Tesla seeks to increase growth by 50%, but wisely couched that goal in a way that Musk rarely does.\n“There may be some periods of time which we’re ahead of that. There could be some periods of time despite our best efforts where we’re slightly lower than that,” he said. “But that remains the long-term goal of the company.”\nGone from the quarterly call were the often outlandish predictions by Musk, such as his infamous prediction for 1 million Teslas as self-driving robotaxis in 2020 and his forecasts for production targets that were frequently missed.\nInstead, the more staid call, with what seemed like a few more questions from Wall Street analysts, included more discussion of operating margins, but it also included comments on some small changes to the CyberTruck, and a statement that Tesla is looking to launch it late next year. When asked about the increased regulatory scrutiny of “Full Self-Driving” mode, Kirkhorn said there are regulatory inquiries all the time, and followed up with some bland corporate speak: “We expect and embrace the scrutiny of the products and know the truth about their performance and innovations our products have will ultimately be all that matters.”\nTesla also did not give specific revenue guidance for this year.\nInvestors seemed to be disappointed with the company’s manufacturing constraints or the more staid nature of the comments. In after-hours trading, shares of Tesla slipped about $14, or nearly 2%, as the call continued on. While they are likely better off without the often fantastic pronouncements and over-promising comments by the controversial Musk, investors definitely felt his absence today.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":157,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":143188679,"gmtCreate":1625781610891,"gmtModify":1633937504615,"author":{"id":"3574907279320575","authorId":"3574907279320575","name":"Machine23","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4e7c812dbe184947690c36d45b6469be","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3574907279320575","idStr":"3574907279320575"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment ...
