derivatives expert, Rocky Fishman, previews June’s upcoming expiration which he dubs as \"large - comparable to a typical quarterly.\" Specifically,<b>there are $1.8 trillion of SPX options expiring on Friday, in addition to $240 billion of SPY options and $200 billion of options on SPX and SPX E-mini futures.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d1ece116794c7f6523250fd682450e3\" tg-width=\"959\" tg-height=\"765\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Yet while these totals are massive,<b>when adjusted for the index’s size the amount of expiring options within 10% of current spot is smaller than just about any quarterly over the past decade.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/534b677774a92a59d4fe08f09359932b\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"298\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>It's worth noting that according to Goldman estimates that combos account<b>for 15-20% of SPX options,</b>so an adjusted open interest total would add up to $1.5tln, still much larger than total expiring single stock open interest ($775bln). Furthermore, with stocks at all time highs, it is to be expected that most of the June open interest is below the current SPX spot price. As shown in the chart below, the dual peaks are at 3,900 and 4,150. This means that after Friday, there may be a certain \"anti\"-gravity around those spots until gamma is refilled.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/adfcada2b0ef3f2ebbd684649a613043\" tg-width=\"936\" tg-height=\"541\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The Goldman strategist then explains what he believes is below the abnormally low level of realized market vol, noting that - as we discussed last week - it is consistent with long gamma positioning. Consider that SPX<b>realized volatility over the past 13 trading days has been just 5.1% - the lowest 13-day realized vol since 2019.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/afffda1e07736784ad695d95a9936421\" tg-width=\"952\" tg-height=\"558\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>This contrasts with extreme volatility in pockets of the single stock market; AMC, which had the highest contract volume among single stocks last week (but far less notional volume at$7bln/day than AMZN’s leading $120bln/day), has had close to 400% realized vol over the same period.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df2b7aeaadb37160a7eaf0ac08ba31de\" tg-width=\"1236\" tg-height=\"561\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Then, as Nomura's Charlie McElligott first noted last week, Goldman's derivatives team agrees that<b>the extremely low SPX realized volatility is consistent with the possibility that 18-Jun has left “the street” long index gamma, in which case Fishman echoeswhat we said last week, namely that \"realized volatility could pick up once positions are cleaner. \"</b>Meanwhile, the rising beta of VIX futures to the SPX indicates that investors expect short gamma dynamics to pick up should markets sell off. Translation:<u><b>the market will become much more volatile in a selloff.</b></u></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/76b01b8a05b70ec4f343626b1fad491b\" tg-width=\"931\" tg-height=\"560\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Meanwhile, and in keeping with the latest memo stock squeeze, Goldman also notes that while single stock option volumes continue to be high, it is well short of Q1 peaks. The large percentage of all single stock option activity driven by retail, and the predictive value of retail activity, have both heightened the attention on the single stock option market in recent weeks. Recent growth in single stock option activity has been concentrated in low-share-price stocks, leaving a shar prise in contract-volume over the past two weeks that has not been matched by notional volume. When adjusting notional volume for the size of the equity market, Goldman finds that single stock volume has actually been on the low of its 2021 range over the past two weeks which means that the latest ramps had little to no gamma squeeze components to them.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9c6c3df49e3e5d1e4a7a0d9c24696e6a\" tg-width=\"1212\" tg-height=\"608\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>One final point which we discussed recently and which is in keeping with the growing retail participation in trading, is Goldman's observation that the trend toward shorter-dated SPX options (weeklies) and away from quarterlies, continues. That also is one of the reasons why Friday’s SPX expiration is smaller than many recent quarterlies, and why as it as approached expiration, its trading volume has been falling.</p>\n<p>As Goldman explains, investors have been increasingly adopting the full calendar of SPX expirations, including expirations every Monday and Wednesday, as they tailor their views around events. In fact,<b>the percentage of SPX option volume happening in 3rd Friday expirations is at an all-time low,</b>and is now smaller than the percentage happening in Monday and Wednesday expirations. It put in motion a fully autonomous vehicle idea originally envisioned by founder Steve Jobs himself.</p>\n<p>Starting in 2016, however, several engineers who had been working on Project Titan left the company. It was probably not until Apple’s acquisition of Drive.ai, in 2019, that the Cupertino company began working towards fulfilling its autonomous vehicle ambitions once again.</p>\n<p>In December 2020, Reutersreleasedwhat was likely the most convincing piece of evidence at the time that the speculated Apple Car would likely see the light of day by 2025. The report unveiled quite a bit of detail about Apple’s plans, including:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Target market</b>: mass market consumers, rather than the autonomous ride-hailing service ideas pursued by the likes of Alphabet (GOOG) and Uber (UBER);</li>\n <li><b>Power source</b>: internally developed monocell battery, possibly lithium iron phosphate, designed to be cheaper and hold charge for longer;</li>\n <li><b>Manufacturing model</b>: Apple was likely to rely on a partner assembler, rather than to build manufacturing capacity from scratch;</li>\n <li><b>Timeline</b>: while the electric vehicle was scheduled to be released in 2024, pandemic-related disruptions to the supply chain could delay the launch by one year.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>In February 2021, Apple raised large quantities of cash through debt issuance. While the move could be justified merely by the opportunity to capitalize in a lower interest rate environment,the Apple Maven speculatedthat the liquidity might be needed to finance a large expansion project, like the Apple Car.</p>\n<p><b>Apple Car: bullish or bearish?</b></p>\n<p>With the likelihood of an Apple Car launch being high, at least in my opinion, one of the key questions is how this product launch will impact the value of Apple stock.</p>\n<p>The market has taken the bullish side. Whenever news about the Apple Car surfaces, AAPL price seems to rally. It happened on June 8, but also immediately after Reuters’ December 2020 report. Back then,Apple shares gained $140 billion in valuewithin the hour following the leak.</p>\n<p>The market’s reactions seem aligned with the idea that autonomous vehicles can be a significant source of growth for Apple – especially once tech devices like smartphones and tablets enter their maturing and declining life cycles. The stock of a growth company tends to command higher valuation multiples.</p>\n<p>Taking the bearish side are a couple of Wall Street analysts. Old time bear-turned-neutral Rod Hall, from Goldman Sachs, offeredthe following take on the Apple Car opportunity:</p>\n<p>“The auto industry has generally lower gross margins than Apple's own current businesses. Tesla's (TSLA) gross margins are about 20%, compared to Apple's 40%. Operating margins are even lower, typically in the high single digits. Even in optimistic scenarios, the release of a production Apple Car is likely to have only a minor impact on Apple's bottom line.”</p>\n<p><b>Twitter speaks</b></p>\n<p>News about the speculated Apple Car, when it surfaces, tends to send Apple stock price higher. The potential suppliers would allegedly be Chinese manufacturers CATL and BYD.\nWith each leak reported about the Apple Car, it becomes increasingly more likely that the Cupertino company will eventually enter the automotive space. The markets seem to like it: notice below how Apple stock price spiked in early trading, on June 8, most likely a reaction to Reuters’ report.\nFigure 1: AAPL chart.\nStock Rover\nOverview of the Apple Car opportunity\nRumors about the potential launch of a driverless Apple Car have been surfacing for the past 7 years at least. “Titan”, started in 2014, was the company’s original electric car project. It put in motion a fully autonomous vehicle idea originally envisioned by founder Steve Jobs himself.\nStarting in 2016, however, several engineers who had been working on Project Titan left the company. It was probably not until Apple’s acquisition of Drive.ai, in 2019, that the Cupertino company began working towards fulfilling its autonomous vehicle ambitions once again.\nIn December 2020, Reutersreleasedwhat was likely the most convincing piece of evidence at the time that the speculated Apple Car would likely see the light of day by 2025. Back then,Apple shares gained $140 billion in valuewithin the hour following the leak.\nThe market’s reactions seem aligned with the idea that autonomous vehicles can be a significant source of growth for Apple – especially once tech devices like smartphones and tablets enter their maturing and declining life cycles. The stock of a growth company tends to command higher valuation multiples.\nTaking the bearish side are a couple of Wall Street analysts. Old time bear-turned-neutral Rod Hall, from Goldman Sachs, offeredthe following take on the Apple Car opportunity:\n“The auto industry has generally lower gross margins than Apple's own current businesses. Tesla's (TSLA) gross margins are about 20%, compared to Apple's 40%. Operating margins are even lower, typically in the high single digits. Starting the year at just 2 a share,AMC stock has skyrocketed more than 36-foldto new all-time highs this past week.</p>\n<p>Shares at one point fell more than 30% on Thursday on news the company plans to sell up to 11.55 million shares — or roughly 2.6% of the total common shares outstanding. AMC later announced completion of the offering, raising $587 million. But in recent days, the stock is holding firm, and it's showing bullish inside action relative to some big daily moves over the past week.</p>\n<p>Given extraordinary gains since late May, is it perhaps time to take some profits off the table?&nbsp;After all, the May rally carries theelements of a climax run. Or is it a buy now?</p>\n<p>This story examines the fundamental, technical and fund ownership factors to determine if the Leawood, Kan., company scores a good probability of making money for stock traders.</p>\n<p>Consider this stat: Prior to Wednesday's giant gain, over just five sessions of trade (May 24 to 28), AMC obliterated the short sellers by rising as much as 203% to Friday's intraday peak of 36.72. AMC stock almost finished up 100% or more for a second straight week. Incredible.</p>\n<p>Following the long Memorial Day holiday weekend, AMC jammed nearly 23% higher Tuesday after the company announced an agreement to sell 8.5 million shares at $27.15 per share to Mudrick Capital. AMC said the proceeds would go toward strategic acquisitions of \"additional theatre leases, as well as investments to enhance the consumer appeal of AMC's existing theatres.\"</p>\n<p>Some of that money could also go toward paying down debt.</p>\n<p>AMC Stock: Do You Have An Exit Strategy?</p>\n<p>Some observers have expressed concern over the company's huge debt load ($5.4 billion in borrowings due one year from now or longer, as of March 31) vs. total assets ($10.5 billion) on the balance sheet.</p>\n<p>On May 24, shares rallied more than 13% despite news that its heretofore largest shareholder, China's Wanda Group, has sold most of its remaining shares in AMC.</p>\n<p>Earlier this year, WallStreetBets chat-room traders on Reddit joined in unison in buying shares and bullish call options in AMC stock. They did the same in a band of other companies that had been heavily sold short and struggling. If you were watching or trading<b>GameStop</b>(GME), you likely were also keeping close tabs on AMC Entertainment.</p>\n<p>Are The Shorts Covering AMC Stock?</p>\n<p>When a stock shows ahigh level of short interestand is getting bid up, you can almost count on a chain reaction of buying to occur. Why? Short sellers, betting on a decline in the stock, often have to do an about-face. They cover their short position by buying back shares.</p>\n<p>According to the latest data analyzed byMarketSmith, theshort interest— or shares sold short by individual and professional investors —&nbsp; is currently 0.7 times AMC stock's daily average volume of 132 million shares, or roughly 92 million shares. That's equivalent to 20% of the stock's entire float — huge. However, that amount may be skewed by the dramatic rise in daily share turnover.</p>\n<p>Still, short sellers had clearly been betting big on a future decline.</p>\n<p>TheInvestor's Business Daily teamwill keep close watch for any signs that short interest has dropped lately.</p>\n<p>Since late January, AMC stock has followed an extreme zigzag path.&nbsp;Just two weeks after that 20.36 peak, AMC crashed. Shares fell to as low as 5.26. Then came a huge second wave of buying, sending shares back in the low teens.</p>\n<p>Week to week, the stock (pumping its market value back up to $25 billion, 450.3 million shares outstanding and a float of 441.3 million) has lately seen its overall price range narrow. That's good as thenew base formed.</p>\n<p>Will AMC Stock Keep Rallying In The Long Term?</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e13c3bc5de41e6ab81d88a5d9e269528\" tg-width=\"831\" tg-height=\"454\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Without a doubt, investors long in AMC are betting on a turnaround in fortunes.</p>\n<p>In 2020, AMC lost $16.15 a share. Over the past five quarters, the company's sales have shrunk 22% to as much as 99% vs. year-ago levels. Such results would normally devastate most companies.</p>\n<p>But as movie theaters open across the country and boost seating capacity, Wall Street is banking on a tremendous rebound in the top line.</p>\n<p>Analysts polled by FactSet offer a consensus estimate of $375 million in second-quarter sales, up 1,884% from a minuscule $18.9 million in the year-ago quarter. Then they see sales rising an additional 561% in Q3 to $790 million and 575% in Q4 to $1.1 billion.</p>\n<p>Wall Street expects net losses of $3.33 a share for 2021, a far cry from the unadjusted $39.15 it lost last year. And the Street sees net losses shrinking further in 2022, to 96 cents a share. Both estimates have gotten revised slightly upward, a bullish sign.</p>\n<p>With big sales expected to arrive, you can expect cash flows to greatly improve.</p>\n<p>Key IBD Ratings</p>\n<p>The last time AMC paid a dividend came on March 23, 2020, at 3 cents per common share. If the company were to resume this cash payout, shareholders could attain an annualized 0.9% yield at the current price near 14 a share.</p>\n<p>For now, AMC scores poorly in many of IBD's proprietary ratings. Headed into Monday's trading, they include a 22Earnings Per Share Ratingon a scale of 1 to 99; an E for Sales + Profit Margins + Return on Equity (SMR) Rating; and a 56Composite Ratingon a scale of 1 (wizened) to 99 (wizardly).</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AMC's movies industry group ranks in the top half of IBD's197 industry groupsin terms of six-month relative performance. Decent, but not outstanding. Mutual funds owning a stake in AMC rose to 203 at the end of March vs. 186 in Q4 of 2020. Some portfolio managers are eager to accumulate shares.</p>\n<p>AMC Stock Forecast</p>\n<p>When choosing growth stocks for the biggest potential gains based on theCAN SLIM investment paradigm, your chances of finding a true market leader improve when you focus on those with aComposite Ratingof 90 or higher. Shooting for a 95 or higher, particularly at the start of a new bull market, is even better.</p>\n<p>However, given that AMC stock is a turnaround play, it makes sense to place more emphasis on relative strength. AMC has that in spades.</p>\n<p>A 99Relative Strength Ratingon a scale of 1 to 99 means that the company has outperformed 99% of all stocks in the IBD database. Strong long-term performance? Indeed.The Accumulation/Distribution Rating, meanwhile, has jumped to a best-possible A+ grade on a scale of A to E.</p>\n<p>Plus, notice on the weekly chart and inMarketSmith, how therelative strength linehas been vaulting.</p>\n<p>The RS line, drawn in blue, compares a stock or ETF's moves vs. the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p>When a stock breaks out of anew base, prefer to see the RS line also running to new high ground. This means that a stock is now outperforming the general market.</p>\n<p>In essence, AMC created a boxy cup-like base over the past two months. That's plenty of time for asolid cup patternto form. This pattern produces aproper buy pointof 10 cents above the cup's left-side peak of 14.54 on March 18. So in AMC stock's case, thecorrect entrystood at 14.64. You want to see heavy volume on the breakout.</p>\n<p>Conclusion: Is It A Buy Now? Or A Sell?</p>\n<p>In effect,AMC stockhas staged astrong breakouttwice last week.</p>\n<p>First, AMC had to surpass 14.64 before becoming a new buy. The May 18 attempt was short-lived. However, a 20% gain on May 25 sent shares zooming past theproper buy point.</p>\n<p>The5% buy zonegoes up to 15.37, so the stock quickly got extended.</p>\n<p>As always, control your risk. Not all breakouts work, especially when thestock market uptrend is under pressure. The best time to buy? When IBD notes the stock market in aconfirmed uptrend, it signifies that buying demand is healthy among institutional investors.</p>\n<p>In stock investing, you want the wind at your back, not in your face.</p>\n<p>Last month, this story suggested keeping a close eye on how AMC stock handles potential upside resistance near 20. In fact, the action since that incredible week ended Jan. 29 could also be viewed as adeep cup pattern. From that vantage point, AMC delivered a second breakout, surpassing a new 20.46buy pointwith fury.</p>\n<p>To get this additional entry in acup without handle, simply add 10 cents to the cup's left-side high — in this case, 20.36. On May 27, shares rifled past this entry and has not looked back. Still, with gains of as much as 501% in just two weeks, it makes sense to lock in at least partial profits.</p>\n<p>And after you buy any stock with solid prospects,don't forget the golden rule of investing. Keeping your losses small keeps you in the investing game for the long haul.</p>\n<p>Yet at this point, AMC is sharply extended from anIBD-style entry point. Wall Street is pumping out reports on cryptos. Piper Sandler issued a 30-page report on Thursday, noting that the “crypto-economy could be entering a pivotal point in its development/lifecycle.”</p>\n<p>Coinbase Global, the largest U.S. crypto exchange and custodian, says it plans to go public on April 14 in what may be the largest tech IPO since&nbsp;Facebook(ticker: FB) in 2012. Private valuations peg Coinbase at $68 billion. The firm custodies an estimated $90 billion in crypto assets on its platform. It had revenue of $1.3 billion in 2020 and profits of $322 million, according to a regulatory filing.</p>\n<p>Fintechs see Bitcoin and other cryptos as a vast new market for payments and transaction services.Visasays it plans to settle transactions in a “stablecoin,” USD Coin (USDC). About $10 billion of USDC is now circulating, according to Visa, which sees it used for everything from buying a cup of coffee to cross-border payments, trade settlements, or foreign money transfers. Stablecoins are like digital dollars, pegged in value to the buck.</p>\n<p>Other votes of confidence in Bitcoin are coming fromTesla(TSLA),PayPal Holdings(PYPL) andSquare(SQ), all of which are now offering ways to transact in Bitcoin or other cryptos.</p>\n<p>And there are expanding ways to invest, including derivatives, stocks and holding companies like the&nbsp;Grayscale Bitcoin Trust&nbsp;(GBTC). Fund sponsors are also angling to launch a U.S.-listed exchange-traded fund (catching up to Canada, where&nbsp;Bitcoin ETFs recently started trading).</p>\n<p>U.S. fund sponsors filing for approvals recently include Fidelity Investments, VanEck,WisdomTree Investments(WETF), SkyBridge Capital, Valkyrie Digital Assets, and NYDIG Asset Management, according to Piper Sandler.</p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission has so far declined to approve a Bitcoin ETF, citing concerns about volatility, price transparency, and market manipulation. However, the Biden Administration’s nominee for SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, may take a friendlier approach. Gensler previously ran the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and has studied cryptos extensively. “This is good news for the digital assets industry,” wrote Jeff Bandman, a former CFTC official in aposton CoinDesk.</p>\n<p>As Bitcoin becomes entrenched, it may only get harder for regulators to restrain. Its growing acceptance as an alternative investment or transaction currency is far outpacing regulatory controls. That, in turn, could improve the investment case for owning it, according to Piper Sandler.</p>\n<p>“Many investors view this scale as a safeguard against potentially overbearing regulations from governments in the developed world,” Piper says. Investing in Bitcoin, the firm adds, is a “quasi call option for both individuals and institutions on this new and potentially disruptive technology.”</p>\n<p>Some economists also view Bitcoin’s rising clout as a means of keeping regulators at bay.</p>\n<p>“My read on the last six to 12 months is that as influential investors come in, it puts pressure on regulators not to do anything,” says Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, who doesn’t expect regulators to sit on their hands forever.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin and other crytpos are regulated by various federal agencies and states, but they aren’t entirely clear or consistent. The IRS classifies cryptos as property, for instance, subjecting it to capital-gains tax. The CFTC said in 2015 that virtual currencies should be “properly defined as commodities.” Banks, for their part, are now allowed to custody cryptos, conduct banking in stablecoins, and participate in blockchain networks under guidelines from the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency.</p>\n<p>But prices for Bitcoin and other cryptos are likely to stay volatile. Only a small fraction of the Bitcoin supply actually trades on exchanges or other platforms—most of it is kept off the market by long-term “hodlers.” That makes the price volatile and act like a thinly traded stock.</p>\n<p>“How bubbly is this market? I think it’s very bubbly,” says Carmen Reinhart, chief economist of the World Bank. “It’s low liquidity and it may not take any melodrama in a thin market to reverse most or all of the price gains we’ve seen.”</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Bitcoin’s use cases are also compelling, she notes, particularly in countries like Venezuela and Lebanon, where hyperinflation and capital controls incentivize the use of unregulated digital currencies.</p>\n<p>“If you want to get money out of Lebanon or any country where you’re concerned about its future prospects—whether it’s inflation, confiscation, or anything else—crypto is a way of transferring [money], a vehicle for capital flight,” she says.</p>\n<p>As for the price, investors should buckle up. “We have to expect huge price volatility,” Reinhart says. “But does this mean we’ll see a crash from which it doesn’t recover? Stablecoins are like digital dollars, pegged in value to the buck.\nOther votes of confidence in Bitcoin are coming fromTesla(TSLA),PayPal Holdings(PYPL) andSquare(SQ), all of which are now offering ways to transact in Bitcoin or other cryptos.\nAnd there are expanding ways to invest, including derivatives, stocks and holding companies like the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). Fund sponsors are also angling to launch a U.S.-listed exchange-traded fund (catching up to Canada, where Bitcoin ETFs recently started trading).\nU.S. fund sponsors filing for approvals recently include Fidelity Investments, VanEck,WisdomTree Investments(WETF), SkyBridge Capital, Valkyrie Digital Assets, and NYDIG Asset Management, according to Piper Sandler.\nThe Securities and Exchange Commission has so far declined to approve a Bitcoin ETF, citing concerns about volatility, price transparency, and market manipulation. However, the Biden Administration’s nominee for SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, may take a friendlier approach. Gensler previously ran the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and has studied cryptos extensively. “This is good news for the digital assets industry,” wrote Jeff Bandman, a former CFTC official in aposton CoinDesk.\nAs Bitcoin becomes entrenched, it may only get harder for regulators to restrain. Its growing acceptance as an alternative investment or transaction currency is far outpacing regulatory controls. That, in turn, could improve the investment case for owning it, according to Piper Sandler.\n“Many investors view this scale as a safeguard against potentially overbearing regulations from governments in the developed world,” Piper says. Investing in Bitcoin, the firm adds, is a “quasi call option for both individuals and institutions on this new and potentially disruptive technology.”\nSome economists also view Bitcoin’s rising clout as a means of keeping regulators at bay.\n“My read on the last six to 12 months is that as influential investors come in, it puts pressure on regulators not to do anything,” says Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, who doesn’t expect regulators to sit on their hands forever.\nBitcoin and other crytpos are regulated by various federal agencies and states, but they aren’t entirely clear or consistent. The IRS classifies cryptos as property, for instance, subjecting it to capital-gains tax. The CFTC said in 2015 that virtual currencies should be “properly defined as commodities.” Banks, for their part, are now allowed to custody cryptos, conduct banking in stablecoins, and participate in blockchain networks under guidelines from the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency.\nBut prices for Bitcoin and other cryptos are likely to stay volatile. Only a small fraction of the Bitcoin supply actually trades on exchanges or other platforms—most of it is kept off the market by long-term “hodlers.” That makes the price volatile and act like a thinly traded stock.\n“How bubbly is this market? I think it’s very bubbly,” says Carmen Reinhart, chief economist of the World Bank. “It’s low liquidity and it may not take any melodrama in a thin market to reverse most or all of the price gains we’ve seen.”\nNonetheless, Bitcoin’s use cases are also compelling, she notes, particularly in countries like Venezuela and Lebanon, where hyperinflation and capital controls incentivize the use of unregulated digital currencies.\n“If you want to get money out of Lebanon or any country where you’re concerned about its future prospects—whether it’s inflation, confiscation, or anything else—crypto is a way of transferring [money], a vehicle for capital flight,” she says.\nAs for the price, investors should buckle up. “We have to expect huge price volatility,” Reinhart says. “But does this mean we’ll see a crash from which it doesn’t recover? Furthermore, with stocks at all time highs, it is to be expected that most of the June open interest is below the current SPX spot price. As shown in the chart below, the dual peaks are at 3,900 and 4,150. Translation:<u><b>the market will become much more volatile in a selloff.</b></u></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/76b01b8a05b70ec4f343626b1fad491b\" tg-width=\"931\" tg-height=\"560\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Meanwhile, and in keeping with the latest memo stock squeeze, Goldman also notes that while single stock option volumes continue to be high, it is well short of Q1 peaks. The large percentage of all single stock option activity driven by retail, and the predictive value of retail activity, have both heightened the attention on the single stock option market in recent weeks. Recent growth in single stock option activity has been concentrated in low-share-price stocks, leaving a shar prise in contract-volume over the past two weeks that has not been matched by notional volume. When adjusting notional volume for the size of the equity market, Goldman finds that single stock volume has actually been on the low of its 2021 range over the past two weeks which means that the latest ramps had little to no gamma squeeze components to them.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9c6c3df49e3e5d1e4a7a0d9c24696e6a\" tg-width=\"1212\" tg-height=\"608\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>One final point which we discussed recently and which is in keeping with the growing retail participation in trading, is Goldman's observation that the trend toward shorter-dated SPX options (weeklies) and away from quarterlies, continues. Furthermore, with stocks at all time highs, it is to be expected that most of the June open interest is below the current SPX spot price. As shown in the chart below, the dual peaks are at 3,900 and 4,150. This means that after Friday, there may be a certain \"anti\"-gravity around those spots until gamma is refilled.\n\nThe Goldman strategist then explains what he believes is below the abnormally low level of realized market vol, noting that - as we discussed last week - it is consistent with long gamma positioning. Consider that SPXrealized volatility over the past 13 trading days has been just 5.1% - the lowest 13-day realized vol since 2019.\n\nThis contrasts with extreme volatility in pockets of the single stock market; AMC, which had the highest contract volume among single stocks last week (but far less notional volume at$7bln/day than AMZN’s leading $120bln/day), has had close to 400% realized vol over the same period.\n\nThen, as Nomura's Charlie McElligott first noted last week, Goldman's derivatives team agrees thatthe extremely low SPX realized volatility is consistent with the possibility that 18-Jun has left “the street” long index gamma, in which case Fishman echoeswhat we said last week, namely that \"realized volatility could pick up once positions are cleaner. \"Meanwhile, the rising beta of VIX futures to the SPX indicates that investors expect short gamma dynamics to pick up should markets sell off. Either way, the cryptocurrency is working itself into the mainstream financial world, achieving the scale and critical mass that may make it increasingly difficult to dislodge or restrain.</p>\n<p>With its market value hovering around $1 trillion, Bitcoin (BTC) has become too large and influential to remain on the financial fringes. Wall Street is pumping out reports on cryptos. Piper Sandler issued a 30-page report on Thursday, noting that the “crypto-economy could be entering a pivotal point in its development/lifecycle.”</p>\n<p>Coinbase Global, the largest U.S. crypto exchange and custodian, says it plans to go public on April 14 in what may be the largest tech IPO since&nbsp;Facebook(ticker: FB) in 2012. Private valuations peg Coinbase at $68 billion. The firm custodies an estimated $90 billion in crypto assets on its platform. It had revenue of $1.3 billion in 2020 and profits of $322 million, according to a regulatory filing.</p>\n<p>Fintechs see Bitcoin and other cryptos as a vast new market for payments and transaction services.Visasays it plans to settle transactions in a “stablecoin,” USD Coin (USDC). About $10 billion of USDC is now circulating, according to Visa, which sees it used for everything from buying a cup of coffee to cross-border payments, trade settlements, or foreign money transfers. Stablecoins are like digital dollars, pegged in value to the buck.</p>\n<p>Other votes of confidence in Bitcoin are coming fromTesla(TSLA),PayPal Holdings(PYPL) andSquare(SQ), all of which are now offering ways to transact in Bitcoin or other cryptos.</p>\n<p>And there are expanding ways to invest, including derivatives, stocks and holding companies like the&nbsp;Grayscale Bitcoin Trust&nbsp;(GBTC). Fund sponsors are also angling to launch a U.S.-listed exchange-traded fund (catching up to Canada, where&nbsp;Bitcoin ETFs recently started trading).</p>\n<p>U.S. fund sponsors filing for approvals recently include Fidelity Investments, VanEck,WisdomTree Investments(WETF), SkyBridge Capital, Valkyrie Digital Assets, and NYDIG Asset Management, according to Piper Sandler.</p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission has so far declined to approve a Bitcoin ETF, citing concerns about volatility, price transparency, and market manipulation. However, the Biden Administration’s nominee for SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, may take a friendlier approach. Gensler previously ran the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and has studied cryptos extensively. “This is good news for the digital assets industry,” wrote Jeff Bandman, a former CFTC official in aposton CoinDesk.</p>\n<p>As Bitcoin becomes entrenched, it may only get harder for regulators to restrain. Its growing acceptance as an alternative investment or transaction currency is far outpacing regulatory controls. That, in turn, could improve the investment case for owning it, according to Piper Sandler.</p>\n<p>“Many investors view this scale as a safeguard against potentially overbearing regulations from governments in the developed world,” Piper says. Investing in Bitcoin, the firm adds, is a “quasi call option for both individuals and institutions on this new and potentially disruptive technology.”</p>\n<p>Some economists also view Bitcoin’s rising clout as a means of keeping regulators at bay.</p>\n<p>“My read on the last six to 12 months is that as influential investors come in, it puts pressure on regulators not to do anything,” says Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, who doesn’t expect regulators to sit on their hands forever.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin and other crytpos are regulated by various federal agencies and states, but they aren’t entirely clear or consistent. The IRS classifies cryptos as property, for instance, subjecting it to capital-gains tax. The CFTC said in 2015 that virtual currencies should be “properly defined as commodities.” Banks, for their part, are now allowed to custody cryptos, conduct banking in stablecoins, and participate in blockchain networks under guidelines from the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency.</p>\n<p>But prices for Bitcoin and other cryptos are likely to stay volatile. Only a small fraction of the Bitcoin supply actually trades on exchanges or other platforms—most of it is kept off the market by long-term “hodlers.” That makes the price volatile and act like a thinly traded stock.</p>\n<p>“How bubbly is this market? Private valuations peg Coinbase at $68 billion. The firm custodies an estimated $90 billion in crypto assets on its platform. It had revenue of $1.3 billion in 2020 and profits of $322 million, according to a regulatory filing.\nFintechs see Bitcoin and other cryptos as a vast new market for payments and transaction services.Visasays it plans to settle transactions in a “stablecoin,” USD Coin (USDC). Sales spiked 75% from the corresponding period of 2020, when the country’s vehicle demand was badly hit by coronavirus woes.</p><p>Digging Into Sales Numbers</p><p>For the first quarter of 2021, sales surged 76% year over year to top 6.48 million units. The massive jump was due to lower severity of COVID-19 impacts, which crimped showroom traffic in the comparable year-ago quarter.</p><p>In fact, automakers in China suffered their bleakest ever quarter in the January-March 2020 period. However, thanks to supportive government policies, gradual reopening of economic activities and pent-up vehicle demand, China is now at the forefront of global auto market recovery.</p><p>Deliveries of new light vehicles including sport utility vehicles, sedans and multi-purpose vehicles grew 77% to exceed 1.87 million units in March 2021. Deliveries of commercial vehicles including pickups and buses rose 68% year over year to 651,000 units. Electric vehicle sales jumped a whopping 240% year over year to 226,000 units.</p><p>New light vehicle deliveries in first-quarter 2021 climbed 75% from the comparable year-ago period to 5.08 million units. Sales of commercial vehicles and EVs spiked 77% and 280% to 1.41 million units and 515,000 units, respectively, on a year-over-year basis.</p><p>China EV Market on Fire, Competition Revs Up</p><p>Demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has been on the rise amid climate change concerns and favorable government policies. Importantly, the country projects electric vehicles (EVs) to account for 25% of new car sales by 2025.</p><p>Last April, the government of China announced plans to extend subsidies and tax breaks for NEVs such as electric or plug-in hybrid cars for another two years to spur sales. Buoyed by favorable government policies and improving consumer confidence and economy, China — world’s largest EV market — is seeing solid sales of zero-emission vehicles.</p><p>China-based EV makers including<b>BYD Co</b>,<b>NIO</b>,<b>Li Auto</b>and<b>XPeng</b>registered strong EV sales last month. Warren Buffett-backed BYD sold 24,218 EVs in March, representing a year-over-year jump of 97.6%.</p><p>NIO — which currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) — delivered 7,257 EVs last month, skyrocketing 373% year over year. EV makers Li Auto and XPeng delivered 4,900 and 5,102 vehicles, up a whopping 238.6% and 384%, respectively, on a year-over-year basis. Per China Passenger Car Association, EV behemoth Tesla sold 35,478 China-made cars last month. The company commands a huge market share in the EV market of China, thanks to robust production from the Shanghai Gigafactory.</p><p>Overall vehicle sales by Ford and General Motors in China witnessed a year-over-year rally of 73% and 69%, respectively, for first-quarter 2021. General Motors is speeding up the development of advanced technologies in China to enable an all-electric future.</p><p>The company’s next-generation EVs (across all brands) in China will be powered by Ultium Drive. It should be noted that the Cadillac LYRIQ SUV would be the first Ultium-powered vehicle to be rolled out in China at Auto Shanghai 2021 later this month.</p><p>Importantly, Sales of Hong Guang mini-EV — under General Motors’ Wuling brand — exceeded 72,000 units in first-quarter 2021, retaining its position as the best-selling green vehicle in the country. Meanwhile, Ford is set to manufacture its electric Mustang Mach-E in China with its joint venture Changan Ford.</p><p>Amid soaring demand, competition is heating up in the China EV market. Even with the subsidies ending in 2022, the e-mobility battle in China is getting fiercer by the day with new upstarts, legacy automakers and tech titans foraying into the space.</p><p>A few days back, China’s leading smartphone maker Xiaomi announced that it is set to invest $10 billion in the development of EVs over the next 10 years. The company intends to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary with an initial investment of around $1.5 billion.</p><p>Ride-hailing platform Didi Chuxing has also launched an EV unit and collaborated with BYD to develop EVs designed for its services. Telecom equipment giant Huawei Technology also aims to launch electric cars under its brand and may roll out a couple of models this year. Search engine behemoth Baidu also announced plans to launch an electric car business in January.</p><p>Chip Deficit to Play Spoilsport</p><p>While China’s vehicle sales have rebounded quite strongly, will the recovery sustain amid the global chip crunch? Well, CAAM has already warned that the chip shortage is set to adversely impact auto production in the nation in second-quarter 2021. The agency does not expect the shortfall to ease until the fourth quarter of this year.</p><p>Although China is the largest auto market, it depends heavily on chip imports and is the largest buyer of semiconductors. Amid the chip shortfall, carmakers are scrambling to procure semiconductors, which are forcing them to undergo production cuts and idle factories. NIO shuttered operations for five days beginning Mar 29 due to microchip shortfall. Volvo Cars, owned by Geely Holdings, also halted production last month. However, thanks to supportive government policies, gradual reopening of economic activities and pent-up vehicle demand, China is now at the forefront of global auto market recovery.</p><p>Deliveries of new light vehicles including sport utility vehicles, sedans and multi-purpose vehicles grew 77% to exceed 1.87 million units in March 2021. Deliveries of commercial vehicles including pickups and buses rose 68% year over year to 651,000 units. Electric vehicle sales jumped a whopping 240% year over year to 226,000 units.</p><p>New light vehicle deliveries in first-quarter 2021 climbed 75% from the comparable year-ago period to 5.08 million units. Sales of commercial vehicles and EVs spiked 77% and 280% to 1.41 million units and 515,000 units, respectively, on a year-over-year basis.</p><p>China EV Market on Fire, Competition Revs Up</p><p>Demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has been on the rise amid climate change concerns and favorable government policies. Importantly, the country projects electric vehicles (EVs) to account for 25% of new car sales by 2025.</p><p>Last April, the government of China announced plans to extend subsidies and tax breaks for NEVs such as electric or plug-in hybrid cars for another two years to spur sales. Buoyed by favorable government policies and improving consumer confidence and economy, China — world’s largest EV market — is seeing solid sales of zero-emission vehicles.</p><p>China-based EV makers including<b>BYD Co</b>,<b>NIO</b>,<b>Li Auto</b>and<b>XPeng</b>registered strong EV sales last month. Warren Buffett-backed BYD sold 24,218 EVs in March, representing a year-over-year jump of 97.6%.</p><p>NIO — which currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) — delivered 7,257 EVs last month, skyrocketing 373% year over year. EV makers Li Auto and XPeng delivered 4,900 and 5,102 vehicles, up a whopping 238.6% and 384%, respectively, on a year-over-year basis. The company commands a huge market share in the EV market of China, thanks to robust production from the Shanghai Gigafactory.</p><p>Overall vehicle sales by Ford and General Motors in China witnessed a year-over-year rally of 73% and 69%, respectively, for first-quarter 2021. General Motors is speeding up the development of advanced technologies in China to enable an all-electric future.</p><p>The company’s next-generation EVs (across all brands) in China will be powered by Ultium Drive. It should be noted that the Cadillac LYRIQ SUV would be the first Ultium-powered vehicle to be rolled out in China at Auto Shanghai 2021 later this month.</p><p>Importantly, Sales of Hong Guang mini-EV — under General Motors’ Wuling brand — exceeded 72,000 units in first-quarter 2021, retaining its position as the best-selling green vehicle in the country. Meanwhile, Ford is set to manufacture its electric Mustang Mach-E in China with its joint venture Changan Ford.</p><p>Amid soaring demand, competition is heating up in the China EV market. Even with the subsidies ending in 2022, the e-mobility battle in China is getting fiercer by the day with new upstarts, legacy automakers and tech titans foraying into the space.</p><p>A few days back, China’s leading smartphone maker Xiaomi announced that it is set to invest $10 billion in the development of EVs over the next 10 years. The company intends to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary with an initial investment of around $1.5 billion.</p><p>Ride-hailing platform Didi Chuxing has also launched an EV unit and collaborated with BYD to develop EVs designed for its services. Telecom equipment giant Huawei Technology also aims to launch electric cars under its brand and may roll out a couple of models this year.
