And for companies large and small, maintaining or expanding staffing levels adds to the headaches -- and cost.
\n
The U.S. retail industry is entering the busiest shopping season of the year under a cloud of doubt despite a mostly favorable economic backdrop. Consumer spending ispowering aheadeven as the inflation rate reaches a three-decade high. The question is how much retailers will profit from what’s expected to be record holiday shopping.
\n
“The consumer is in great shape, and the consumer’s willingness to spend is very high,” said Brian Yarbrough, an analyst at Edward Jones. “The bigger issue is supply-chain cost and product availability.”
\n
It’s not all bad news. For all the carnage this week, Wall Street has hardly abandoned retailers. Since Nov. 12, a broad S&P 500 retail index has advanced 2.5%, reflecting in part the outlook for strong consumer spending. Year-to-date, the index is up 25%, the same as the S&P 500 overall.
\n
Home Depot Inc.has jumped 11% during that period and surpassed Walmart in market value, bolstered by sustained demand from do-it-yourselfers and the U.S. housing industry.Dollar Tree Inc.has led the industry with a 30% surge in the span, thanks to its plan to ditch its namesake price point and start charging $1.25 for most of its products.
\n
There’s little question that consumers are reaching for their wallets. Online consumer spending jumped 20% this month through Tuesday in a sign that holiday shopping has started early, accordingto the Adobe Digital Economy Index.
\n
During the last two months of the year, U.S. e-commerce spending is expected to climb 10% to a record $207 billion, Adobe said. According to the National Retail Federation, total holiday saleswill rise8.5% to 10.5% from 2020 to reach as much as $859 billion.
\n
Extra Costs
\n
But satisfying that demand is likely to prove expensive. Walmart and Target chartered their own cargo ships to sidestep some of the supply-chain snarls. That helped them bolster inventory, fueling confidence that their shelves will be well stocked. But the extra costs contributed to declines in their gross margin, a key measure of profitability, which rattled investors.
\n
Nike Inc.said higher air-freight costs during the holiday season would crimp profitability. Switching to air freight from ocean transportation was a drag on Gap, too. And even after putting more merchandise on planes, Gap still suffered from “acute supply-chain headwinds” that left the company unable to take advantage of strong demand, Chief Executive Officer Sonia Syngal said.
\n
Supply problems also felled Nordstrom, which ran short of key items such as women’s shoes and apparel at its Rack off-price chain. Gap and Nordstrom both fell the most on record in Wednesday trading.
\n
With slow transportation causing delays in product shipments, many retailers will have less time to sell their goods before Christmas. Gap, for example, “may have to engage in promos if demand slows, partially undoing the inventory rationalization efforts through last year,” Cowen & Co. analyst Oliver Chen said in a report.
\n
To be sure, demand doesn’t appear poised for a slowdown during this holiday season. As of Nov. 23, 2021, this is 141.3% more than the same time in 2020, which had 395 IPOs by this date.
\n
Dating app Bumble, plant-based milk company Oatly and online brokerage giant Robinhood are among the more high-profile companies that went public this year. Robinhood popularized no-fee stock trading and was valued at $32 billion.
\n
Startups are taking advantage of low-interest rates and stimulus from the Federal Reserve, and investors are heavily craving rapidly-growing startups amid the boom for SPACs, which have become popular ways for companies that are looking to go public with a little less regulatory scrutiny, CNN reported.
\n
The uptick in SPAC IPOs began in 2019's fourth quarter with the highly successful offerings of Richard Branson's spaceflight company Virgin Galactic, online betting company DraftKings, and the scaled-down WeWork, which have all gone public by merging with a SPAC.
\n
More recent SPAC IPOs include luxury electric vehicle company Lucid Motors and personal finance company SoFi Technologies.
\n
Former President Donald Trump has plans to merge his new social media company Trump Media & Technology Group with a SPAC, too — Digital World Acquisition, which also went public in 2021.
\n
But, will the boom of SPACs continue into 2022?
\n
Sara Potter, a marketing content specialist and economic contributor at FactSet, is skeptical. \"SPACs are facing much more regulatory scrutiny and some high-profile lawsuits are coming,\" she said, according to a report for Investor's Business Daily.
\n
Some big firms also are choosing to go public through direct listings of shares on Wall Street exchanges. Video game platform Roblox, the largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and electric vehicle-maker Rivian Automotive all issued stock directly instead of selling new shares in an IPO. But, after strong debuts, most IPOs taper off after excitement dies down.
\n
The Renaissance IPO ETF, which holds shares of large, high-profile companies that have gone public in the past few years, such as Roblox, Coinbase, Airbnb and DoorDash, as of Nov. 23, is down 2.96% for the year. The S&P 500, as of the same date, is up almost 25% in 2021.
\n
But the surge in demand for regular IPOs shows that startups with at least a $1 billion valuation are willing to pursue the old-school way of going public.
\n
\"An accommodative market backdrop and elevated valuations have encouraged issuers to go public,\" said Rachel Gerring, IPO leader for EY Americas, in a report last month. \"We are cautiously optimistic that these trends can continue through year-end and into 2022.\"
\n
\"We expect the IPO market to finish the year strong, with a robust pipeline and ample ... backlog to support issuance in the fourth quarter,\" said analysts at Renaissance Capital, a research and investment firm that focuses on IPOs, in a recent report.
\n
TheStreet has looked at some of the IPOs this year with the biggest returns, along with the percentage gains or losses for their stock, year-to-date.
\n
Here are the Top IPOs of 2021 so far:
\n
Huadi International Group | up 150.77%
\n
Wenzhou, China-based Huadi International Group (HUDI) was founded to design and manufacture steel pipe and related products for use in a variety of end markets and in over 20 countries worldwide. As of Nov. 23, 2021, this is 141.3% more than the same time in 2020, which had 395 IPOs by this date.\nDating app Bumble, plant-based milk company Oatly and online brokerage giant Robinhood are among the more high-profile companies that went public this year. Robinhood popularized no-fee stock trading and was valued at $32 billion.\nStartups are taking advantage of low-interest rates and stimulus from the Federal Reserve, and investors are heavily craving rapidly-growing startups amid the boom for SPACs, which have become popular ways for companies that are looking to go public with a little less regulatory scrutiny, CNN reported.\nThe uptick in SPAC IPOs began in 2019's fourth quarter with the highly successful offerings of Richard Branson's spaceflight company Virgin Galactic, online betting company DraftKings, and the scaled-down WeWork, which have all gone public by merging with a SPAC.\nMore recent SPAC IPOs include luxury electric vehicle company Lucid Motors and personal finance company SoFi Technologies.\nFormer President Donald Trump has plans to merge his new social media company Trump Media & Technology Group with a SPAC, too — Digital World Acquisition, which also went public in 2021.\nBut, will the boom of SPACs continue into 2022?\nSara Potter, a marketing content specialist and economic contributor at FactSet, is skeptical. \"SPACs are facing much more regulatory scrutiny and some high-profile lawsuits are coming,\" she said, according to a report for Investor's Business Daily.\nSome big firms also are choosing to go public through direct listings of shares on Wall Street exchanges. Video game platform Roblox, the largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and electric vehicle-maker Rivian Automotive all issued stock directly instead of selling new shares in an IPO. But, after strong debuts, most IPOs taper off after excitement dies down.\nThe Renaissance IPO ETF, which holds shares of large, high-profile companies that have gone public in the past few years, such as Roblox, Coinbase, Airbnb and DoorDash, as of Nov. 23, is down 2.96% for the year. The S&P 500, as of the same date, is up almost 25% in 2021.\nBut the surge in demand for regular IPOs shows that startups with at least a $1 billion valuation are willing to pursue the old-school way of going public.\n\"An accommodative market backdrop and elevated valuations have encouraged issuers to go public,\" said Rachel Gerring, IPO leader for EY Americas, in a report last month. \"We are cautiously optimistic that these trends can continue through year-end and into 2022.\"\n\"We expect the IPO market to finish the year strong, with a robust pipeline and ample ... backlog to support issuance in the fourth quarter,\" said analysts at Renaissance Capital, a research and investment firm that focuses on IPOs, in a recent report.\nTheStreet has looked at some of the IPOs this year with the biggest returns, along with the percentage gains or losses for their stock, year-to-date.\nHere are the Top IPOs of 2021 so far:\nHuadi International Group | up 150.77%\nWenzhou, China-based Huadi International Group (HUDI) was founded to design and manufacture steel pipe and related products for use in a variety of end markets and in over 20 countries worldwide. ZIM shares closed at $55. on Nov. 23.\nSociety Pass | down 77%\nSociety Pass went public on Nov. 9 with a big jump, but the stock has languished since. The IPO launched with 2.9 million shares priced at $9 each, and the next day, the stock skyrocketed to close at $48.30. The Vietnam-based digital technology company listed a $26 million initial public offering. According to a statement released by the company, the IPO marked the first-ever Vietnamese company to make a traditional stock listing outside of its home country. Shares closed at $11.18 on Nov. 23.\nDigital World Acquisition | up 297%\nDigital World Acquisition Corp. made its debut at the end of September with an offering of $250 million, consisting of 25,000,000 units at $10 per unit.
