The long-term average return for the S&P 500 has been about 11% per year, and that's through depressions and recessions, war and civil unrest.
\n
The one certainty seems to be that no matter how bad things get, things always get better and actually improve. The beauty of stock investing is that you don't actually need to have a lot of money to get started and turn a small grubstake into a retirement nest egg.
\n
You could park $500 in the stock index for 25 years and not add another dollar and have it turn into $7,500 at those market averages. But the following two stocks should help your small investing acorn turn into a mighty oak portfolio, and likely well before the next decade begins.
\n
Fiverr
\n
The gig economy is here to stay, and Fiverr (NYSE:FVRR) has become a key driver of its acceptance as an alternative income generating channel. The freelancing platform has moved well beyond its early days when each gig was priced at just $5, and that has helped it grow into an important resource for creatives and those who need their services. The pandemic actually made it essential.
\n
Fiverr's technology platform connects freelancers with individuals and companies in need of their services. Instead of going through an agency, the buyer finds them on Fiverr through posted gigs, or packages with set prices for their work, including experience and how many jobs they may already have in the queue.
\n
Revenue surged 77% in 2020 to $189.5 million, and while the market has treated the stock as if no one will ever need to buy a gig again as the economy reopens (shares are down 2% year to date compared to a 19% gain for the S&P 500), management forecasts revenue will still rise 50% this year.
\n
Despite Fiverr's decline, shares remain expensive, trading at 27 times sales, or some nine times what the index trades at. Yet there are some good reasons to believe the freelance platform can readily grow into its valuation.
\n
Although the Israeli company estimates the total freelance market to be $750 billion annually and its addressable portion in the U.S. to be over $100 billion, Fiverr looks forward to expanding its business well beyond the English-speaking world, which currently represents around 70% of its revenue. International expansion will be a key focus for the future.
\n
Wall Street forecasts that Fiverr's adjusted earnings of $0.12 per share last year can grow to $1.57 per share by 2023, or a compounded growth rate of 135% annually. The long-term average return for the S&P 500 has been about 11% per year, and that's through depressions and recessions, war and civil unrest.\nThe one certainty seems to be that no matter how bad things get, things always get better and actually improve. The beauty of stock investing is that you don't actually need to have a lot of money to get started and turn a small grubstake into a retirement nest egg.\nYou could park $500 in the stock index for 25 years and not add another dollar and have it turn into $7,500 at those market averages. But the following two stocks should help your small investing acorn turn into a mighty oak portfolio, and likely well before the next decade begins.\nFiverr\nThe gig economy is here to stay, and Fiverr (NYSE:FVRR) has become a key driver of its acceptance as an alternative income generating channel. The freelancing platform has moved well beyond its early days when each gig was priced at just $5, and that has helped it grow into an important resource for creatives and those who need their services. The pandemic actually made it essential.\nFiverr's technology platform connects freelancers with individuals and companies in need of their services. Instead of going through an agency, the buyer finds them on Fiverr through posted gigs, or packages with set prices for their work, including experience and how many jobs they may already have in the queue.\nRevenue surged 77% in 2020 to $189.5 million, and while the market has treated the stock as if no one will ever need to buy a gig again as the economy reopens (shares are down 2% year to date compared to a 19% gain for the S&P 500), management forecasts revenue will still rise 50% this year.\nDespite Fiverr's decline, shares remain expensive, trading at 27 times sales, or some nine times what the index trades at. Yet there are some good reasons to believe the freelance platform can readily grow into its valuation.\nAlthough the Israeli company estimates the total freelance market to be $750 billion annually and its addressable portion in the U.S. to be over $100 billion, Fiverr looks forward to expanding its business well beyond the English-speaking world, which currently represents around 70% of its revenue. International expansion will be a key focus for the future.\nWall Street forecasts that Fiverr's adjusted earnings of $0.12 per share last year can grow to $1.57 per share by 2023, or a compounded growth rate of 135% annually. With share prices tending to follow earnings, the gig shop should see its stock follow suit and its current, seemingly overheated valuation looking like a very cool opportunity.\nGenuine Parts\nThe computer chip shortage continues to plague the auto industry, and that's good news for Genuine Parts (NYSE:GPC), the owner of the NAPA Auto Parts chain of aftermarket auto parts stores.
Rising crude oil prices are a factor of supply rather than demand, she says

Much like the whale oil trade at its peak in the mid 1800s, crude oil prices have probably topped.

That's according to Cathie Wood, founder and CEO of Ark Investment Management, who spoke of a coming peak in crude oil prices due to the arrival of electric vehicles $(EV)$, in a series of tweets late Thursday.

Citing U.S. Energy Information Administration data, the investment manager said global oil demand peaked at 101 million barrels per day (mbd) in 2019, dropped to 92 mbd during the coronavirus in 2020, and has since rebounded to 97 mbd in 2021. \"Based on our forecast for EV sales, @ARKInvest believes that oil demand has peaked,\" Wood said.

ARK has predicted that EV sales will rise roughly 20-fold from around 2.2 million in 2020 to 40 million units in 2025, and industry heavyweight Tesla $(TSLA)$ is the biggest holding in the flagship ARK Innovation exchange-traded fund $(ARKK)$. She also pointed to pension funds who are demanding oil companies reduce capital spending while Wall Street banks are denying them money for fracking, as OPEC is \"holding the line on supply\".

As for the 50% plus gains seen for U.S. and international benchmark Brent crude oil prices this year, she describes that as \"more a function of supply than demand. At the turn of the 20th century, whale oil faced the same fate and whale oil prices fluctuated dramatically. If @ARKInvest's research is correct, oil prices will suffer the same fate as whale prices.\"

Killing whales for their oil began in the 1700s, and the trade boomed by the mid-1800s, as the oil was used for lighting lamps and making soap, but it began to fall into decline due to the discovery of petroleum in 1859 and later electricity. The whale oil trade never recovered, ending completely by the early 20th century.

This chart from research consulting firm Thunder Said Energy shows the rise and fall of that trade:

Of course, Wood's view on oil's demise, comes as Wall Street banks have been lifting forecasts for crude prices, with Bank of America predicting Friday that Brent could rise to $100 a barrel, amid rising natural gas prices. Crude oil futures prices were down slightly at $77 a barrel on Friday, amid a report that OPEC and its allies will discuss a further increase to global output than had been previously expected at a meeting next week.

But a day earlier, prices rose on a report that China told state-owned energy companies to build their reserves to meet power needs for the winter amid outages in that country. That's as Europe natural gas and power prices have been surging and some expect that could feed through to higher crude oil prices.

Read:The oil sector saw a stellar outperformance versus 10 other sectors in September.

In May, Wood predicted oil prices were unlikely to go above $70 a barrel, and in July 2020, said they were headed back to $12.

Her latest views were met with some pushback on Twitter though:

-Barbara Kollmeyer

\n \n

$(END)$ Dow Jones Newswires

October 01, 2021 09:46 ET (13:46 GMT)

Copyright (c) 2021 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
