In the fourth quarter of 2020, bitcoin rallied about 170% from about $10,780 to $28,980, according to CoinDesk data.
\n
Bitcoin also has seen a good start to October, as the cryptocurrency on Wednesday rose above $55,000, the first time since May.
\n
Traders and analysts attributed the rally partly to institutional inflows, as established players expect the SEC to approve the first bitcoin futures exchange-traded funds in the coming weeks.
\n
SEC Chairman Gary Gensler recently reiterated his support for a bitcoin-backed futures ETF, which would invest in bitcoin-based futures contracts instead of the crypto itself. The SEC hasn't yet approved any bitcoin-backed ETFs or those underpinned by bitcoin derivatives.
\n
Bitcoin futures contracts at CME Group $(CME)$ were trading at a premium of up to 17% to the spot price on Wednesday, the highest since April, when bitcoin reached its all-time high, according to data analytics tool Skew. The metric usually reflects institutional flows, as CME is the preferred avenue for institutions' exposure to bitcoin.
\n
\"The unusually large premium indicates an overwhelming amount of outright buying,\" crypto trading firm QCP Capital wrote on Telegram on Thursday.
\n
Liquidation of leveraged short positions also fueled bitcoin's recent price rally, analysts said. Leveraged short positions are when traders bet the price of an asset will decline using borrowed funds.
\n
\" The setup for a short squeeze had been primed this week as bears shorted $50K resistance,\" NYDIG, a financial service firm that focuses on bitcoin, wrote in a report on Wednesday.
\n
Déjà vu Q4 2020?
\n
Some analysts expect the rise to be sustained. Anto Paroian, chief operating officer at crypto hedge fund ARK36, said the uptrend this week is different from the one a month ago, when bitcoin surpassed $50,000. \"There wasn't enough strength in the markets to sustain a further rally,\" Paroian told MarketWatch via email.
\n
\"Now, after consolidating for a long time in the $40K range, Bitcoin seems much better prepared for another big move upwards,\" Paroian wrote. \"If that happens, Bitcoin will likely go on to test its ATH (all-time high) and there's a high probability it will break it.\"
\n
However, some remain wary that the crypto market could see another swing lower similar to the fourth quarter of 2020.
\n
Dan Morehead, CEO of asset manager Pantera Capital, warned that the \"buy the rumor, sell the news\" pattern may apply if the SEC approves a bitcoin-backed futures ETF.
\n
\"Will someone please remind [me] the day before the bitcoin ETF officially launches? I might want to take some chips off the table,\" Morehead wrote in a report.
\n
About a year before CME listed bitcoin futures in December 2017, bitcoin rose by 2,440%. The cryptocurrency rallied 822% in the 12 months ahead of crypto exchange Coinbase $(COIN)$'s direct listing at Nasdaq. However, the market turned downward after both events, Morehead noted in the report.
\n
Meanwhile, as the crypto market becomes broader, more institutional, price swings should moderate, Morehead speculates.
\n
Crypto brief
\n
Bloomberg Businessweek published a cover story last week about the mystery around the $69 billion assets of Tether, the world's largest stablecoin issuer. With exponential growth in recent years, Tether has drawn increasing scrutiny from the regulators and some investors. Its stablecoin USDT is pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollars.
\n
Tether has invested some of its reserves in Chinese commercial paper, and it was before the recent woes of Chinese real-estate developer Evergrande, according to Bloomberg, citing a document that detailed Tether's reserves.
\n
A Tether representative didn't answer the question if Tether has held any Chinese commercial paper, but wrote through email that USDT is always backed by reserves including cash, cash equivalents, other short-term deposits and commercial paper.
\n
Bloomberg also reported that Tether has made billions of dollars of crypto-backed loans, with one to crypto lending platform Celsius Network Ltd.
\n
The Tether representative wrote to MarketWatch that \"we have a select, small group of customers that borrow USDTs in exchange for posting security. These loans are secured by collateral in Tether's possession of well in excess of 100% of the loan proceeds and earn monthly interest for Tether.\"
\n
A bean bag for Bankman-Fried?
\n
Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and CEO of crypto exchange FTX, is the richest person under 30 in the world, according to Forbes. Thanks to the crypto boom, Bankman-Fried is now worth $22.5 billion, up from $8.7 billion in April.
\n
The 29-year-old self-made billionaire is known for sleeping in bean bags in the office for most nights. \"One side advantage of the bean bags: if I sleep in the office, my mind stays in work mode, and I don't have to reload everything the next day,\" Bankman-Fried once wrote on Twitter.
\n
It seems that the habit has also been adopted by Ryan Salame, who was named CEO of FTX's newly launched subsidiary FTX Digital Markets in the Bahamas. The SEC hasn't yet approved any bitcoin-backed ETFs or those underpinned by bitcoin derivatives.\nBitcoin futures contracts at CME Group $(CME)$ were trading at a premium of up to 17% to the spot price on Wednesday, the highest since April, when bitcoin reached its all-time high, according to data analytics tool Skew. The metric usually reflects institutional flows, as CME is the preferred avenue for institutions' exposure to bitcoin.\n\"The unusually large premium indicates an overwhelming amount of outright buying,\" crypto trading firm QCP Capital wrote on Telegram on Thursday.\nLiquidation of leveraged short positions also fueled bitcoin's recent price rally, analysts said. A pair of research notes from the Street on Wednesday highlight how both areas should provide a material boost to top-line growth in the months and years ahead — while also noting a few associated risks.
\n
In a new report, Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani dove into Apple’s growing opportunity in advertising, and he likes what he found. Daryanani thinks Apple’s ad business can grow to $20 billion in the September 2025 fiscal year, from an estimated $2 billion in fiscal 2020, most of that from App Store ads.
\n
He notes that the projected growth would be similar to that of Amazon’s(AMZN) ad business, which has expanded to about $20 billion from about $3 billion over a four-year span. Daryanani asserts that ads could account for as much as 9% of Apple’s earnings per share in fiscal 2025 if the business hits his target.
\n
“Apple’s advertising business remains an underappreciated lever for upside as we go forward and provides them with a unique way to ensure consumer privacy is upheld, but also further enhance the monetization mechanisms,” Daryanani writes in a research note.
\n
Under Apple’s “App Tracking Transparency” program, apps must ask for permission before tracking user activity across other companies’ apps and websites. The program has been positioned as a privacy measure, but has the secondary effect of shifting more ad dollars to Apple’s own advertising platform.
\n
Daryanani sees the biggest opportunity in shifting the App Store ad platform to content discovery, not just content delivery — ads offer a way for app developers to attract customers, in the same way that Amazon ads help sellers cut through the clutter to lure shoppers. And he sees additional advertising opportunities in Apple Maps and Apple TV+, among other places.
\n
“Advertising is a great growth opportunity for Apple and their tremendous installed base gives them a competitive advantage that they have not effectively exploited in the past,” he adds. “Recent actions indicate this is set to change as Apple looks to capture its fair share of a $1 trillion market.”
\n
Daryanani is not the only analyst that sees potential expansion in the Apple ad business. Earlier this month,Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote a long research note on the same topic; his conclusion was that ads could be a $7 billion to $10 billion business for Apple in fiscal 2023 or 2024. He noted that growth drivers for the Apple ad business include the June addition of search ads in China, higher ad loads, and the introduction of banner ads to the App Store in May. Sacconaghi also pointed out that Apple generates very modest revenue today — likely under $500 million a year — from ads in the Apple News and Stocks apps. Daryanani echoed all of those points in his report.
\n
Meanwhile, in a new note on Wednesday, Sacconaghi turns his attention to Apple’s search relationship with Google, a unit of Alphabet(GOOGL). Google pays Apple a substantial annual fee to be the default search engine on the iPhone — a relationship that has drawn the attention of the Justice Department, which last year filed suit against Google for monopolizing its control of the search market, specifically citing the Apple deal in the complaint.
\n
Neither Apple nor Google has been transparent about the terms of their relationship. Sacconaghi this morning writes that he now thinks Google’s payments to Apple in fiscal 2020 were $10 billion, higher than his previous estimate of $8 billion. And he thinks the payment could jump to $15 billion in fiscal 2021, driving up Apple’s services revenue, and contributing an estimated 9% of Apple’s overall gross profits. He estimates that 39% of Google’s traffic acquisition costs this year will go to Apple, up from an estimated 13% in 2013.
\n
Search is really the largest advertising pool for Apple. Sacconaghi estimates that Apple’s overall revenue from advertising in fiscal 2020 was $12.4 billion – and that $10 billion of that came from the company’s search relationship with Google.
\n
Sacconaghi sees some risk in Apple’s growing connection with Google. For one thing, there is regulatory focus on the situation – although he thinks any conclusion of the Justice Department lawsuit is “years away,” he sees a potential 4% to 5% risk to Apple’s profits from an adverse ruling. He also thinks there is some risk that Google could choose to stop paying Apple, or look to renegotiate the terms of its deal and pay less.
\n
Sacconaghi says Google pays up for the deal in part to ensure Microsoft(MSFT) — the only real rival for Google in search — does not outbid it. But he also says that with payments to Apple likely to approach $20 billion in fiscal 2022, “it is not implausible that Google could revisit its strategy.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Has 2 Secret Weapons. Both companies are also called to allow app developers to explicitly advertise within apps, so that consumers can subscribe and make purchases outside of the App Store or the Google Play Store, he added.
\n
This will help avoiding the 30% take rate on in-app purchases, the analyst said.
\n
The proposed bill will have to be approved by the House and Senate before becoming law, Munster said.
\n
Regulation Not Automatically Negative: The end result of regulation is not automatically negative for big tech, given unintended consequences often occur when incentives change, Munster said.
\n
Even if Apple buckles under pressure and reduces its take rate from 30% to 10% - a possibility which is unlikely – it could still make more money ultimately, the analyst said. What's several times more difficult, though, is finding potential winners before they take off. Companies working on emerging technologies often face significant risks. At the same time, if successful, their stocks could generate windfall returns. Here are three such companies that are working on the technologies and infrastructure of the future.
\n
QuantumScape
\n
The number of electric vehicles in use worldwide is increasing with each passing day. The shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs is unstoppable. QuantumScape (NYSE:QS) may play a critical role in this transition. The company believes that the solid-state batteries it is developing can provide greater range and quicker recharge times than the lithium-ion batteries currently in use. What's more, its batteries should, in theory, also cost less than lithium-ion batteries.
\n
If QuantumScape can deliver what it is promising, it would have a huge market for its batteries. The company estimates $450 billion of potential annual battery sales if all 90+ million vehicles produced annually shift to batteries.
\n
\n
There are, however, several risks to consider. QuantumScape is still developing the technology and is several years away from commercial production. Its batteries have so far only been sample tested in labs. In its second-quarter results, the company announced that it is testing 10-layer cells and progressing according to its plans. Notably, batteries for use in EVs need several dozen of such layers, something the company expects to accomplish in 2022. At the same time, QuantumScape is slightly ahead of schedule for its pre-pilot manufacturing line. Overall, the company said it is progressing on time.
\n
QuantumScape doesn't expect to generate positive EBITDA before 2027. That's a long time from now, and many things can go wrong in the meantime. But this stock must be on your watch list, even if you decide not to buy it right now.
\n
ChargePoint Holdings
\n
Another stock to potentially benefit from the growth in EVs is electric charging company ChargePoint (NYSE:CHPT). With more than 112,000 charging points in North America and Europe, ChargePoint is one of the biggest EV charging companies in the world. The company claims to control 70% of the public level 2 charging market share in North America.
\n
Like other EV charging providers, ChargePoint isn't profitable right now. It hopes to generate positive EBITDA in 2024. Though a well-functioning public charging network is essential for the growth of EVs, the model for development of this infrastructure is still evolving. Some EV makers, such as Tesla, are developing their own charging networks. Others, such as General Motors, are partnering with several public EV charging companies, essentially suggesting that all chargers are basically the same.
\n
EV charging companies, in turn, are finding innovative ways to generate revenue while continuing to expand their infrastructure. This infrastructure, if properly developed and maintained, should surely be of value in the future. As a top player, ChargePoint could be better placed than others to benefit from the expected growth in EVs. You wouldn't want to miss watching how this company evolves over time.
\n
Bloom Energy
\n
Fuel cells have certainly attracted investors' attention lately. However, makers of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, such as Plug Power, remain the primary focus. That's because PEM fuel cells find applications in the transport segment due to their quick start and stop times, as well as their lighter weight.
\n
However, another key area for fuel cells that doesn't get so much interest but is of great significance is stationary baseload generation and back-up power. Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) is primarily focused on this segment. It is also expanding into carbon capture technologies, marine transport, and hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzers. Overall, the company pegs its total addressable market at over $2 trillion.
\n
Bloom Energy fares better on key financial metrics compared to other fuel cell makers. In the last three years, the company has grown its revenue, shrank losses, and improved margins. Bloom Energy expects that its cash from operations will move toward positive territory for full-year 2021. It also expects to achieve non-GAAP operating margin of around 3% for the year. What's several times more difficult, though, is finding potential winners before they take off. Companies working on emerging technologies often face significant risks. At the same time, if successful, their stocks could generate windfall returns. Here are three such companies that are working on the technologies and infrastructure of the future.\nQuantumScape\nThe number of electric vehicles in use worldwide is increasing with each passing day. The shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs is unstoppable. QuantumScape (NYSE:QS) may play a critical role in this transition. The company believes that the solid-state batteries it is developing can provide greater range and quicker recharge times than the lithium-ion batteries currently in use. What's more, its batteries should, in theory, also cost less than lithium-ion batteries.\nIf QuantumScape can deliver what it is promising, it would have a huge market for its batteries. The company estimates $450 billion of potential annual battery sales if all 90+ million vehicles produced annually shift to batteries.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nThere are, however, several risks to consider. QuantumScape is still developing the technology and is several years away from commercial production. Its batteries have so far only been sample tested in labs. In its second-quarter results, the company announced that it is testing 10-layer cells and progressing according to its plans. Notably, batteries for use in EVs need several dozen of such layers, something the company expects to accomplish in 2022. At the same time, QuantumScape is slightly ahead of schedule for its pre-pilot manufacturing line. Overall, the company said it is progressing on time.\nQuantumScape doesn't expect to generate positive EBITDA before 2027. That's a long time from now, and many things can go wrong in the meantime. But this stock must be on your watch list, even if you decide not to buy it right now.\nChargePoint Holdings\nAnother stock to potentially benefit from the growth in EVs is electric charging company ChargePoint (NYSE:CHPT). With more than 112,000 charging points in North America and Europe, ChargePoint is one of the biggest EV charging companies in the world. The company claims to control 70% of the public level 2 charging market share in North America.\nLike other EV charging providers, ChargePoint isn't profitable right now. It hopes to generate positive EBITDA in 2024. Though a well-functioning public charging network is essential for the growth of EVs, the model for development of this infrastructure is still evolving. Some EV makers, such as Tesla, are developing their own charging networks. Others, such as General Motors, are partnering with several public EV charging companies, essentially suggesting that all chargers are basically the same.\nEV charging companies, in turn, are finding innovative ways to generate revenue while continuing to expand their infrastructure. This infrastructure, if properly developed and maintained, should surely be of value in the future. As a top player, ChargePoint could be better placed than others to benefit from the expected growth in EVs. You wouldn't want to miss watching how this company evolves over time.\nBloom Energy\nFuel cells have certainly attracted investors' attention lately. However, makers of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, such as Plug Power, remain the primary focus. That's because PEM fuel cells find applications in the transport segment due to their quick start and stop times, as well as their lighter weight.\nHowever, another key area for fuel cells that doesn't get so much interest but is of great significance is stationary baseload generation and back-up power. Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) is primarily focused on this segment. It is also expanding into carbon capture technologies, marine transport, and hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyzers. Overall, the company pegs its total addressable market at over $2 trillion.\nBloom Energy fares better on key financial metrics compared to other fuel cell makers. In the last three years, the company has grown its revenue, shrank losses, and improved margins. Bloom Energy expects that its cash from operations will move toward positive territory for full-year 2021. It also expects to achieve non-GAAP operating margin of around 3% for the year. This overlooked stock definitely needs to be on your watch list of growth stocks.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":190,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":861752398,"gmtCreate":1632541312014,"gmtModify":1632541312014,"author":{"id":"4088565127232680","authorId":"4088565127232680","name":"Sucrampler","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/080a38970fa9962e1bde26b7924cf916","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088565127232680","authorIdStr":"4088565127232680"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$Hello","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$Hello","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$Hello","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5426061fac001522f96a4038a4ff1ea8","width":"1125","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/861752398","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":346,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
