I think you’ll have just as good a chance at day trading AMC stock for a profit as you would flipping SPCE stock or betting on red at the roulette table. If you are a long-term investor, both AMC and Virgin Galactic are grossly overvalued. However, SPCE stock has a much more compelling long-term bull thesis than AMC does.</p>\n<p><b>Why SPCE Stock Is Soaring</b></p>\n<p>On June 25, Virgin announced the&nbsp;FAA granted&nbsp;the company a commercial space-launch license.</p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, popular billionaire founder Richard Branson announced he would be on Virgin’s first manned flight on July 11. By doing so, Branson will beat&nbsp;<b>Amazon.com</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) founder Jeff Bezos in the billionairespace race. Bezos will be aboard Blue Origin’s first manned flight on July 20.</p>\n<p>There’s no question the recent headlines are overwhelmingly positive for the company’s brand and long-term outlook. However, Virgin Galactic is still years away from doing any meaningful business.</p>\n<p>Bank of America analyst Ronald Epstein is projecting $2 million in revenue from the company in 2021. By 2023, he is projecting Virgin Galactic’s revenue will grow to $115 million. For context, its market cap is now $10.8 billion. That valuation is slightly higher than&nbsp;<b>Dick’s Sporting Goods</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DKS</u></b>) at $9 billion. Bank of America is projecting $11.1 billion in revenue for Dick’s in 2023. That’s roughly 10 times more revenue than Virgin Galactic.</p>\n<p>I’m not suggesting that Virgin Galactic and Dick’s are even remotely comparable in terms of business model or growth outlook. I’m merely highlighting how tiny Virgin Galactic’s business is today and how tiny it will continue to be for at least several more years.</p>\n<p><b>Two Overvalued Stocks</b></p>\n<p>Once again, the FAA news is unequivocally good news for Virgin Galactic’s long-term outlook.</p>\n<p>“We continue to see Virgin Galactic as a beneficiary of the new commercial space race,” Epstein said following the FAA news.</p>\n<p>“However, we believe this premium is already priced into the stock and will dwindle as more commercial space companies go public.”</p>\n<p>In that same note, Epstein downgraded SPCE stock from “neutral” to “underperform.” He also set a $41 price target, well below the $49 it was trading on July 9.</p>\n<p>Like Virgin, AMC is also unprofitable. It’s also extremely overvalued based on current and projected earnings, sales and cash flow.</p>\n<p>But AMC also has an Everest-sized mountain of debt. And it has flooded the market with new shares of stock, diluting current shareholders in an attempt to stay solvent and avoid bankruptcy.</p>\n<p><b>How to Play it</b></p>\n<p>While SPCE stock is up 177% since mid-May, AMC is up 300%. As I discussed, Virgin Galactic’s big move came on the heels of major positive headlines about the company’s long-term future. The major news about AMC in recent weeks has been that the company is selling millions more shares of stock and giving retail investors&nbsp;free popcorn.</p>\n<p>Oh, and the company itself also took the time to include&nbsp;a warning&nbsp;to investors in an official filing.</p>\n<p>“Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” AMC wrote.</p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic is an overvalued growth stock with a reasonable chance the company will eventually grow into its current valuation. Of course, that growth may take five years or longer to play out.</p>\n<p>AMC is the exact opposite. Movie theater ticket sales have been steadily shrinking for about&nbsp;two decades.&nbsp; There’s a huge difference between making a high-risk bet on an early leader in a potentially massive growth market and making a high-risk bet on a leader in a market in secular decline.</p>\n<p>I’m not recommending long-term investors buy AMC or SPCE at this point. Of course, that growth may take five years or longer to play out.\nAMC is the exact opposite. Movie theater ticket sales have been steadily shrinking for about two decades.  There’s a huge difference between making a high-risk bet on an early leader in a potentially massive growth market and making a high-risk bet on a leader in a market in secular decline.\nI’m not recommending long-term investors buy AMC or SPCE at this point. Among U.S.-listed companies,Tesla(TSLA) is next up, with a market value of $629 billion, followed by Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.A),Alibaba Group Holding(BABA),Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM), and Visa(V).\nWe’ve covered all of those stocks closely at Barron’s, and I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to colleagues about which company might be next. I’ve also queried sources and polled readers of our daily Review & Preview newsletter.\nA few names get repeated mentions: Tesla,Nvidia(NVDA), Visa, and JPMorgan Chase(JPM), each of which are worth at least $400 billion.Shopify(SHOP) got a less obvious mention. The company is way down the market-value rank at $182 billion. It has become something of the anti-Amazon,providing bricks-and-mortar vendors and other businesses with easy e-commerce tools. While Amazon.com(AMZN) seeks to fend off regulation and a potential breakup, Shopify can keep its head down and continue to recruit new business.\nI’ll place my bets on Visa getting to $1 trillion next, even if it takes a while. The company is closely tied to the economic recovery, since it gets a cut of transactions that run through its global electronic-payments network.\nThe business, which is part tech and part financial services, has a long tailwind as cash usage declines around the world. Visa shares have returned an annualized 28% over the past decade. If that pattern holds, Visa would reach $1 trillion by 2024.\nWhile the next trillion-dollar stock is clearly a guessing game, one thing is clear: Large numbers have been no impediment to future gains.Apple(AAPL) has returned an annualized 44% since it became the first U.S.-listed company to reach a $1 trillion value in August 2018. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.\n\nI asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&P information technology, as a percent of overall S&P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”\nRight now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.\nTech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. Operating margins for the S&P 500’s information technology sector have doubled in the past 15 years, to a recent 21%, according to Yardeni Research, while overall S&P 500 margins have been static at 10% or so (excluding a collapse during the financial crisis).\nTech’s magic—and those trillion-dollar club passes—are now hitting up against the increased likelihood of regulation. “The sheer fact of the headline of the trillion-dollar club is going to bring even more regulation,” says Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of The Leuthold Group.\nOn Friday, the Biden administration signed an executive order that calls for a “whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy.” The order, which consists of 72 initiatives, is simultaneously broad and narrow. It pushes against consolidation while also addressing consumer pain points, like early-termination fees for broadband services, hard-to-fix consumer devices, and airline baggage fees.\nBy now, the Biden administration recognizes that tech regulation isn’t a slam dunk with the public. Despite unease around data and privacy practices, less than half of U.S. adults are in favor of more tech regulation, according to a 2020 Pew Research poll.\nA room at the F8 Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif.\nPrivacy regulation is politically complicated, especially if it means reining in the advertising that enables free services like social media, internet search, and email. But there isn’t much controversial about limiting broadband charges or making it easier to fix a smartphone battery. The White House seems to be attacking companies where it hurts—their mixed record of customer service.\nFor now, investors continue to generally overlook regulation. However, Virgin is one of the 10 most mentioned tickers on WallStreetBets, according toSwaggy Stocks.</p>\n<p>If you’re a meme stock gambler, best of luck to you. I think you’ll have just as good a chance at day trading AMC stock for a profit as you would flipping SPCE stock or betting on red at the roulette table. If you are a long-term investor, both AMC and Virgin Galactic are grossly overvalued. However, SPCE stock has a much more compelling long-term bull thesis than AMC does.</p>\n<p><b>Why SPCE Stock Is Soaring</b></p>\n<p>On June 25, Virgin announced the&nbsp;FAA granted&nbsp;the company a commercial space-launch license.</p>\n<p>Shortly thereafter, popular billionaire founder Richard Branson announced he would be on Virgin’s first manned flight on July 11. By doing so, Branson will beat&nbsp;<b>Amazon.com</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) founder Jeff Bezos in the billionairespace race. Bezos will be aboard Blue Origin’s first manned flight on July 20.</p>\n<p>There’s no question the recent headlines are overwhelmingly positive for the company’s brand and long-term outlook. However, Virgin Galactic is still years away from doing any meaningful business.</p>\n<p>Bank of America analyst Ronald Epstein is projecting $2 million in revenue from the company in 2021. By 2023, he is projecting Virgin Galactic’s revenue will grow to $115 million. For context, its market cap is now $10.8 billion. That valuation is slightly higher than&nbsp;<b>Dick’s Sporting Goods</b>(NYSE:<b><u>DKS</u></b>) at $9 billion. Bank of America is projecting $11.1 billion in revenue for Dick’s in 2023. That’s roughly 10 times more revenue than Virgin Galactic.</p>\n<p>I’m not suggesting that Virgin Galactic and Dick’s are even remotely comparable in terms of business model or growth outlook. I’m merely highlighting how tiny Virgin Galactic’s business is today and how tiny it will continue to be for at least several more years.</p>\n<p><b>Two Overvalued Stocks</b></p>\n<p>Once again, the FAA news is unequivocally good news for Virgin Galactic’s long-term outlook.</p>\n<p>“We continue to see Virgin Galactic as a beneficiary of the new commercial space race,” Epstein said following the FAA news.</p>\n<p>“However, we believe this premium is already priced into the stock and will dwindle as more commercial space companies go public.”</p>\n<p>In that same note, Epstein downgraded SPCE stock from “neutral” to “underperform.” He also set a $41 price target, well below the $49 it was trading on July 9.</p>\n<p>Like Virgin, AMC is also unprofitable. It’s also extremely overvalued based on current and projected earnings, sales and cash flow.</p>\n<p>But AMC also has an Everest-sized mountain of debt. And it has flooded the market with new shares of stock, diluting current shareholders in an attempt to stay solvent and avoid bankruptcy.</p>\n<p><b>How to Play it</b></p>\n<p>While SPCE stock is up 177% since mid-May, AMC is up 300%. As I discussed, Virgin Galactic’s big move came on the heels of major positive headlines about the company’s long-term future. The major news about AMC in recent weeks has been that the company is selling millions more shares of stock and giving retail investors&nbsp;free popcorn.</p>\n<p>Oh, and the company itself also took the time to include&nbsp;a warning&nbsp;to investors in an official filing.</p>\n<p>“Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” AMC wrote.</p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic is an overvalued growth stock with a reasonable chance the company will eventually grow into its current valuation. Of course, that growth may take five years or longer to play out.</p>\n<p>AMC is the exact opposite. Movie theater ticket sales have been steadily shrinking for about&nbsp;two decades.&nbsp; There’s a huge difference between making a high-risk bet on an early leader in a potentially massive growth market and making a high-risk bet on a leader in a market in secular decline.</p>\n<p>I’m not recommending long-term investors buy AMC or SPCE at this point. In fact, it has become one of the most popular social media meme stocks in recent weeks. Virgin is not quite at the level of AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC) in terms of social media buzz. However, Virgin is one of the 10 most mentioned tickers on WallStreetBets, according toSwaggy Stocks.\nIf you’re a meme stock gambler, best of luck to you. I think you’ll have just as good a chance at day trading AMC stock for a profit as you would flipping SPCE stock or betting on red at the roulette table. If you are a long-term investor, both AMC and Virgin Galactic are grossly overvalued. However, SPCE stock has a much more compelling long-term bull thesis than AMC does.\nWhy SPCE Stock Is Soaring\nOn June 25, Virgin announced the FAA granted the company a commercial space-launch license.\nShortly thereafter, popular billionaire founder Richard Branson announced he would be on Virgin’s first manned flight on July 11. By doing so, Branson will beat Amazon.com(NASDAQ:AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos in the billionairespace race. Bezos will be aboard Blue Origin’s first manned flight on July 20.\nThere’s no question the recent headlines are overwhelmingly positive for the company’s brand and long-term outlook. However, Virgin Galactic is still years away from doing any meaningful business.\nBank of America analyst Ronald Epstein is projecting $2 million in revenue from the company in 2021. By 2023, he is projecting Virgin Galactic’s revenue will grow to $115 million. For context, its market cap is now $10.8 billion. That valuation is slightly higher than Dick’s Sporting Goods(NYSE:DKS) at $9 billion. Bank of America is projecting $11.1 billion in revenue for Dick’s in 2023. That’s roughly 10 times more revenue than Virgin Galactic.\nI’m not suggesting that Virgin Galactic and Dick’s are even remotely comparable in terms of business model or growth outlook. I’m merely highlighting how tiny Virgin Galactic’s business is today and how tiny it will continue to be for at least several more years.\nTwo Overvalued Stocks\nOnce again, the FAA news is unequivocally good news for Virgin Galactic’s long-term outlook.\n“We continue to see Virgin Galactic as a beneficiary of the new commercial space race,” Epstein said following the FAA news.\n“However, we believe this premium is already priced into the stock and will dwindle as more commercial space companies go public.”\nIn that same note, Epstein downgraded SPCE stock from “neutral” to “underperform.” He also set a $41 price target, well below the $49 it was trading on July 9.\nLike Virgin, AMC is also unprofitable. It’s also extremely overvalued based on current and projected earnings, sales and cash flow.\nBut AMC also has an Everest-sized mountain of debt. And it has flooded the market with new shares of stock, diluting current shareholders in an attempt to stay solvent and avoid bankruptcy.\nHow to Play it\nWhile SPCE stock is up 177% since mid-May, AMC is up 300%. As I discussed, Virgin Galactic’s big move came on the heels of major positive headlines about the company’s long-term future. The major news about AMC in recent weeks has been that the company is selling millions more shares of stock and giving retail investors free popcorn.\nOh, and the company itself also took the time to include a warning to investors in an official filing.\n“Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” AMC wrote.\nVirgin Galactic is an overvalued growth stock with a reasonable chance the company will eventually grow into its current valuation. Of course, that growth may take five years or longer to play out.\nAMC is the exact opposite. Movie theater ticket sales have been steadily shrinking for about two decades.  There’s a huge difference between making a high-risk bet on an early leader in a potentially massive growth market and making a high-risk bet on a leader in a market in secular decline.\nI’m not recommending long-term investors buy AMC or SPCE at this point. Among U.S.-listed companies,Tesla(TSLA) is next up, with a market value of $629 billion, followed by&nbsp;Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.A),Alibaba Group Holding(BABA),Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM), and&nbsp;Visa(V).</p>\n<p>We’ve covered all of those stocks closely at&nbsp;Barron’s, and I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to colleagues about which company might be next. The company is way down the market-value rank at $182 billion. It has become something of the anti-Amazon,providing bricks-and-mortar vendors and other businesses with easy e-commerce tools. While&nbsp;Amazon.com(AMZN) seeks to fend off regulation and a potential breakup, Shopify can keep its head down and continue to recruit new business.</p>\n<p>I’ll place my bets on Visa getting to $1 trillion next, even if it takes a while. The company is closely tied to the economic recovery, since it gets a cut of transactions that run through its global electronic-payments network.</p>\n<p>The business, which is part tech and part financial services, has a long tailwind as cash usage declines around the world. Visa shares have returned an annualized 28% over the past decade. If that pattern holds, Visa would reach $1 trillion by 2024.</p>\n<p>While the next trillion-dollar stock is clearly a guessing game, one thing is clear: Large numbers have been no impediment to future gains.Apple(AAPL) has returned an annualized 44% since it became the first U.S.-listed company to reach a $1 trillion value in August 2018. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed700f7a7812c0bf7b9b205ad99c33e7\" tg-width=\"872\" tg-height=\"769\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>I asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&amp;P information technology, as a percent of overall S&amp;P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”</p>\n<p>Right now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.</p>\n<p>Tech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. Operating margins for the S&amp;P 500’s information technology sector have doubled in the past 15 years, to a recent 21%, according to Yardeni Research, while overall S&amp;P 500 margins have been static at 10% or so (excluding a collapse during the financial crisis).</p>\n<p>Tech’s magic—and those trillion-dollar club passes—are now hitting up against the increased likelihood of regulation. “The sheer fact of the headline of the trillion-dollar club is going to bring even more regulation,” says Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of The Leuthold Group.</p>\n<p>On Friday, the Biden administration signed an executive order that calls for a “whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy.” The order, which consists of 72 initiatives, is simultaneously broad and narrow. It pushes against consolidation while also addressing consumer pain points, like early-termination fees for broadband services, hard-to-fix consumer devices, and airline baggage fees.</p>\n<p>By now, the Biden administration recognizes that tech regulation isn’t a slam dunk with the public. Despite unease around data and privacy practices, less than half of U.S. adults are in favor of more tech regulation, according to a 2020 Pew Research poll.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/963cb5c585db8df9615cd98e0bbd4bbc\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"840\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>A room at the F8 Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif.</span></p>\n<p>Privacy regulation is politically complicated, especially if it means reining in the advertising that enables free services like social media, internet search, and email. But there isn’t much controversial about limiting broadband charges or making it easier to fix a smartphone battery. The White House seems to be attacking companies where it hurts—their mixed record of customer service.</p>\n<p>For now, investors continue to generally overlook regulation. That’s partly because the federal government wants to rein in big business, but also because the current trillion-dollar members have a natural incentive to keep the club small.</p>\n<p>There’s a big drop-off to the next candidate for membership—call it the Trillion-Dollar Cliff. Among U.S.-listed companies,Tesla(TSLA) is next up, with a market value of $629 billion, followed by&nbsp;Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.A),Alibaba Group Holding(BABA),Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM), and&nbsp;Visa(V).</p>\n<p>We’ve covered all of those stocks closely at&nbsp;Barron’s, and I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to colleagues about which company might be next. I’ve also queried sources and polled readers of our daily Review &amp; Preview newsletter.</p>\n<p>A few names get repeated mentions: Tesla,Nvidia(NVDA), Visa, and&nbsp;JPMorgan Chase(JPM), each of which are worth at least $400 billion.Shopify(SHOP) got a less obvious mention. The company is way down the market-value rank at $182 billion. It has become something of the anti-Amazon,providing bricks-and-mortar vendors and other businesses with easy e-commerce tools. While&nbsp;Amazon.com(AMZN) seeks to fend off regulation and a potential breakup, Shopify can keep its head down and continue to recruit new business.</p>\n<p>I’ll place my bets on Visa getting to $1 trillion next, even if it takes a while. The company is closely tied to the economic recovery, since it gets a cut of transactions that run through its global electronic-payments network.</p>\n<p>The business, which is part tech and part financial services, has a long tailwind as cash usage declines around the world. Visa shares have returned an annualized 28% over the past decade. If that pattern holds, Visa would reach $1 trillion by 2024.</p>\n<p>While the next trillion-dollar stock is clearly a guessing game, one thing is clear: Large numbers have been no impediment to future gains.Apple(AAPL) has returned an annualized 44% since it became the first U.S.-listed company to reach a $1 trillion value in August 2018. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed700f7a7812c0bf7b9b205ad99c33e7\" tg-width=\"872\" tg-height=\"769\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>I asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&amp;P information technology, as a percent of overall S&amp;P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”</p>\n<p>Right now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.</p>\n<p>Tech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. Operating margins for the S&amp;P 500’s information technology sector have doubled in the past 15 years, to a recent 21%, according to Yardeni Research, while overall S&amp;P 500 margins have been static at 10% or so (excluding a collapse during the financial crisis).</p>\n<p>Tech’s magic—and those trillion-dollar club passes—are now hitting up against the increased likelihood of regulation. “The sheer fact of the headline of the trillion-dollar club is going to bring even more regulation,” says Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of The Leuthold Group.</p>\n<p>On Friday, the Biden administration signed an executive order that calls for a “whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy.” The order, which consists of 72 initiatives, is simultaneously broad and narrow.
